Selena Pau Pres of Houston lost in water off Alaskan coast after falling overboard cruise ship

JUNEAU, Alaska (KTRK) -- Authorities in Alaska are conducting a death investigation after a Houston woman went overboard during a cruise.

Alaska State Troopers identify the woman as 40-year-old Selena Pau Pres.

"The Alaska State Troopers' Alaska Bureau of Investigation is conducting a death investigation into this incident, which is standard practice for law enforcement in most deaths that occur in Alaska," said Austin McDaniel, communications director for the Alaska State Troopers.

The 40-year-old was aboard the Solstice cruise ship operated by Celebrity Cruises touring the coast of Alaska.

The ship was in the upper Lynn Canal on Tuesday when investigators say she fell overboard at about 3 a.m.

The U.S. Coast Guard spent more than nine hours searching for her by air and sea, but suspended the search after finding no signs of her.

"Despite our best efforts to locate the individual, it is with heavy hearts that we make the decision to suspend the search," said Coast Guard Lt. Trevor Layman, a Sector Juneau Command Center duty officer. "The decision to suspend active searching is based on a number of factors including weather, sea state, water temperature and other variables."

The Coast Guard says the estimated survival time in the 41-degree water is just over six hours.

A report from KIRO-TV in Seattle state the ship's security cameras caught the moment she fell into the water.

Passengers on board report the ship came to a complete stop just after she went overboard.

The ship did continue with its cruise after the Coast Guard suspended the search.

ABC13 Eyewitness News has reached out to Celebrity Cruises for more information on their investigation and the nature of how she fell overboard.

They have not responded.

Coast Guard investigating how woman fell off cruise ship in Alaska; search suspended

JUNEAU, Alaska — Members of the Coast Guard are trying to determine how a woman fell off a Seattle-based cruise ship and into frigid waters in Alaska.

It happened in the Inside Passage on Tuesday. The woman still hasn’t been found.

Passengers on the cruise that left from Seattle said they were stunned.

According to the Coast Guard, the incident was the first in at least three years that someone had went overboard on an Alaskan cruise.

The captain of the Celebrity Solstice reported the woman missing at 3 a.m. Tuesday.

“It was early in the morning and the ship came to a complete stop and the Coast Guard was flying around,” passenger Natasha Nelson Stubbs said.

Stubbs was one of the many passengers who were jolted awake when the ship made a sudden stop.

Coast Guard members said they spent the next nine hours searching for the missing passenger, but she was not found. That, coupled with an estimated survival time of 6.19 hours in the water, led the Coast Guard to suspend the search.

“What you’re going to experience in cold water like that is cold water shock, which basically causes a heart attack,” Coast Guard Petty Officer Ally Blackburn said.

According to investigators, the ship’s security cameras caught the moment the victim fell into the water.

“(It’s) very sad and very tragic that something like this would happen when everyone’s having such a good time,” Stubbs said.

It’s not yet known how she fell overboard.

“My family and I all sat around and said, ‘Who did we see? Did we see anyone alone? Who was this?’” Stubbs said.

Investigators said the woman who fell into the water is in her 40s. Her identity and where she is from have not been released.

The Celebrity Solstice ended up continuing its journey.

The ship will dock in Seattle on Friday.

The Associated Press contributed to this story.

The US Coast Guard (USCG) suspended the search for a 40-year-old female passenger who fell overboard off a Celebrity Cruises ship in Alaska’s Inside Passage .

The USCG ended the search on Tuesday, May 17, after searching for the woman for ~9 hours, according to CG Petty Office Ali Blackburn. The search was conducted by a helicopter and a boat in the waters close to Eldred Rock in Lynn Canal, ~20 miles west of Juneau AK .

The Captain of the Celebrity Solstice ship reported the missing woman at ~3 am on Tuesday, the USCG said. The name of the victim has not been released.

Blackburn said that because of the searching that they had done, it had yielded negative results. That, coupled with an estimated survival time of 6.19 hours in the water, had led the CG to suspend the search.

The survival time was based on factors like air and water temperatures and the age of the woman. The air temperature in Juneau AK was 51 Fahrenheit (11 Celsius) Tuesday afternoon. The National Weather Service announced the water temperature was 41 Fahrenheit (5 Celsius).

Woman Falls Overboard Celebrity Cruise Ship, Search Suspended

A 40-year-old woman is missing after falling overboard a Celebrity Cruises ship in Alaska’s Inside Passage, prompting a search by the U.S. Coast Guard that has since been suspended.

The captain of the Celebrity Solstice ship reported the woman had fallen in near Eldred Rock in the upper Lynn Canal, Alaska, to the rescuers at 3 a.m. on Tuesday. A cruise ship camera showed her going overboard as the ship sailed from Juneau to Skagway, Alaska, Alaska Public Media reported.

Search efforts included an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter and a 45-foot response boat, which looked for the woman for more than nine hours. The search area covered 68 square nautical miles, according to KIRO , a CBS affiliate out of Seattle.

“Despite our best efforts to locate the individual, it is with heavy hearts that we make the decision to suspend the search," Coast Guard Lt. Trevor Layman told KIRO. "The decision to suspend active searching is based on a number of factors including weather, sea state, water temperature and other variables.”

Survival time in the Alaskan waters was estimated at 6.19 hours based on water and air temperature, as well as the woman’s age, the Associated Press said.

At the time, the air temperature in Juneau, which is near the search site , was 51 degrees Fahrenheit. The water temperature was 41 degrees Fahrenheit, according to the National Weather Service, as reported by the Associated Press.

The Celebrity Solstice ship, which can hold up to 3,400 passengers and 1,000 crew members, was on its fourth day of a week-long roundtrip sailing from Seattle, Alaska Public Media said.

The woman’s name has not been released, and the incident is still under investigation.

Search suspended for woman who fell overboard from a cruise ship in Southeast Alaska

The U.S. Coast Guard has suspended a search for a 40-year-old woman who reportedly fell off a cruise ship early Tuesday morning about 20 miles south of Haines.

Petty Officer Ali Blackburn said the decision Tuesday afternoon to suspend the search was based on several factors including the air and water temperature and the amount of time that had passed.

“We searched air and surface searches for over nine hours and covered 68 square nautical miles. And we just didn’t yield any results or locate any individuals in that area,” she said. “So our decision to suspend the search was made.”

Blackburn said the Coast Guard estimates the woman could have survived only about six hours in the 40-degree waters of Upper Lynn Canal.

The captain of the ship reported the incident after a cruise ship camera showed the woman going overboard at about 3 a.m. Tuesday near Eldred Rock as the ship sailed from Juneau to Skagway, said Blackburn.

The Coast Guard responded with a search by air and by sea — a helicopter from Sitka, a response boat from Juneau and the crew aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Chandeleur based in Valdez.

“We never enjoy ending a search for somebody,” said Blackburn. “And we want to offer our condolences to the family and friends of that individual.”

The missing woman has not been publicly identified. The Coast Guard said the incident is under investigation.

The Celebrity Solstice is operated by Celebrity Cruises, and it can carry up to 3,400 passengers and 1,000 crew. It was on the fourth day of a weeklong round-trip cruise from Seattle.

Coast Guard ends search for woman who went overboard on cruise ship

U.S. Coast Guard authorities have halted the search for a woman who reportedly went overboard on a cruise ship near Ensenada, Mexico. Authorities searched more than 31 hours for the woman before pausing the search on Sunday pending additional information, the Coast Guard said Sunday.

The woman in her mid-20s was reported to have gone overboard early Saturday, Petty Officer First Class Adam Stanton said. The Carnival Miracle cruise ship was returning Sunday to the port in Long Beach, where federal authorities were waiting to investigate.

Daniel Miranda, a Northern California firefighter paramedic and one of the passengers onboard the ship,  spoke with CBS Los Angeles while the ship was docked in Ensenada.

"Someone has lost their life, whether it was done by accident or by foul play I don't know — there's some high suspicion of foul play. … A lot of people are concerned because that's somebody's life, and that's a high likelihood that this person will not be found alive," he said.

Miranda said an announcement went out early Saturday that someone had gone overboard, and that areas of the ship were cordoned off and limited information was provided.

"They immediately did their best efforts to get crews out on little boats and rescue, to start a search," Miranda told CBS Los Angeles. "They had crew literally around the deck to look all the way around the ship to be able to see if somebody was out in the water. They had lights out in the water trying to flash out there, but again it's pretty dark."

The woman was not immediately identified. The ship left Los Angeles area on Thursday.

Coast Guard Suspends Search for Passenger Who Fell From Cruise Ship

The U.S. Coast Guard said on Sunday that it halted its search for a woman who went overboard from a Carnival cruise ship near Ensenada, Mexico.

The U.S. Coast Guard suspended a 31-hour search for a passenger who fell off a cruise ship near Mexico, the authorities said on Sunday.

The woman, who was not immediately identified, was aboard a Carnival cruise ship when she fell on Saturday morning “from the balcony of her stateroom,” Carnival Cruise Line said in a statement. The company said the ship had been on a three-day cruise to Ensenada, Mexico, and the Coast Guard said the woman fell near there.

Carnival did not provide further details of how the woman fell overboard.

On Saturday, the Coast Guard said that it had deployed a cutter called the Forrest Rednour as well as a helicopter, and that it was working with Mexico’s Navy to find the woman.

Crews started searching early in the morning on Saturday and into Sunday, the Coast Guard said. It led a search of about 520 square nautical miles, it said.

One passenger told a California news station, KABC-TV , that he heard someone say, “Man overboard, man overboard port side” on the ship’s speakers. He said that when he looked over the balcony of his room, he saw crew members tossing life preservers into the water.

Daniel Miranda, another passenger, told the station that cruise officials said that they had “verified through the cameras” that a woman had fallen into the water. A photo he took, broadcast by the station, also showed that the area of the ship where the woman fell had been cordoned off with blue tape.

After more than 31 hours scouring the area, the Coast Guard said on Sunday that it had suspended its search “pending additional information.”

The cruise company said in its statement that after assisting the Coast Guard, its ship had returned to Long Beach, Calif., as scheduled on Dec. 12. “Our thoughts are with the guest and her family, and our Care Team is providing support,” the company said.

In California, Federal Bureau of Investigation agents went to the ship “with an evidence response team” to assist in the case, a spokeswoman for the bureau said on Monday.

It is increasingly uncommon for passengers to fall from cruise ships, according to Carolyn Spencer Brown, who has covered the cruise industry for about 25 years, currently as chief content officer of Cruise Media LLC.

“It’s becoming much more uncommon than it was 20 years ago,” she said, citing the “increasingly sophisticated design specifications” that have prioritized safety on ships.

“They are designed to keep you safe,” she continued. “You really don’t hear about it very often, and when it happens, typically there are other factors involved.”

In 2010, Congress passed the Cruise Vessel Security and Safety Act , which required ships be equipped with rails no shorter than 42 inches above the deck, and with alarms and other technology to help signal and find passengers who go overboard.

In 2018 and 2019, 26 and 29 people fell overboard from cruise and ferry ships, according to Cruisejunkie.com , which lists cases reported by the news media, including those involving people who jumped. In 2020 and 2021, when far fewer passengers took cruises because of the pandemic, the site recorded three incidents.

Ross A. Klein, who tracks the cases of people who fall overboard on his website, Cruisejunkie.com, wrote in a June 2019 report that information on people who fall overboard is limited “as cases may not be publicly reported.”

Falls overboard could involve intoxication, accidents or deliberate jumps, Mr. Klein’s report said, but he warned there was reason to be cautious with labels because of the lack of information.

“Alcohol intoxication is known in only a small percentage of cases, largely because there is no systematic reporting of persons overboard, and no accounting of behavior prior to a disappearance (such as alcohol consumption),” the report said.

Asked about how many people have fallen overboard from Carnival ships in recent years, a spokeswoman for the company said she did not have any further information other than the statement about this weekend’s search.

The ship traveling to Ensenada this weekend, the Carnival Miracle, debuted in 2004 and can accommodate more than 2,100 guests and 934 crew members, according to the company.

Very sad. I’m sure it was distressing to hear the news as a passenger on the ship.

Great Review

I have always wondered if people intentionally book a cruise to end up jumping off.  I mean its a lot of work to plan. i would think alcohol is usually involved and a big enough disagreement comes up that makes one actually think that jumping is the best alternative.

i did know of one guy when i was young who got high and thought  it would be fun to get up on a balcony rail on the 5th floor of a bldg to do a dance or something. he was buried 5 days later..so sad.

I guess “fell” is the politically correct way to say it. I just hate for new cruisers to think it is possible. I also think it’s become a option for people who want to commit suicide. Also people who want to commit a crime are in international waters and possibly hard to prove.

Yes, like having to fly in the day before your ship leaves as is often suggested by many CCers on this board.

It's like when they report that a train ran someone over. My husband always comments that they need to find a way to keep the trains on the tracks so this doesn't happen.

Not a great option for suicide if you ask me. Drowning in the cold ocean?

It is widely known that this group are nothing more than "ambulance chasers" who aims to sensationalize any and all cruise incidents to make as much money as they can.

Take all of their publications with a grain of salt and a great deal of skepticism.

Not so rare at all. In fact, other than suicide, that's likely been the case in most cases.  Foul play is the least likely.

From that height unless you know exactly how to enter the water you risk injuring yourself when hitting the water, even experienced cliff jumpers have been known to crack a vertebrae or two.  When you hit cold water you have a sudden urge to inhale so if you're not doomed at that point, you'll most likely go deep and then you have to find your way to the surface which can be challenging in the pitch blackness.

I don't think many, because the house always wins, almost all gamblers are use to losing.  Perhaps losing at the casino was the straw that broke the camels back in the mind of someone who already wanted to end it all for another reason.

Nobody on any cruise ship I've been on can "fall" over. They can climb over rails and then "fall", but never involuntary. I've sailed on more than a few ships in my 30 years of cruising.

The amount of what you can borrow per day through the shipboard account is rather limited.

I suspect hypothermia is the least of their problems... depending upon what deck and how they hit the water..it can be like hitting concrete. But it is very tragic that this had to happen to someone... deliberate or not.

I believe no cruise company besides Disney has put that system on their ships. I read it cost half a million per ship to make it happen.

I will most likely get blasted for this but here goes....whether this woman fell or chose to jump is a TRAGEDY for her Family/Friends and all this speculation and sometimes insensitive comments on how or why can be very inappropriate!

Not so rare at all. In fact, other than suicide, that's likely been the case in most cases.  Foul play is the least likely.

From that height unless you know exactly how to enter the water you risk injuring yourself when hitting the water, even experienced cliff jumpers have been known to crack a vertebrae or two.  When you hit cold water you have a sudden urge to inhale so if you're not doomed at that point, you'll most likely go deep and then you have to find your way to the surface which can be challenging in the pitch blackness.

A passenger has died after jumping overboard from the world’s largest cruise ship after it set sail from Florida .

The male passenger, who has not been identified, reportedly jumped, according to the New York Post , from the 20-deck high Icon of the Seas after it left a Florida port on Sunday to embark on a seven-day cruise around the Caribbean , first stopping in Honduras.

The Coast Guard , which said it did not have much involvement in the incident beyond assisting in the search for the man, told the New York Post that “the cruise ship deployed one of their rescue boats, located the man, and brought him back aboard”.

The man has since been “pronounced deceased,” the Coast Guard added.

The world’s largest cruise experience was approximately 300 miles away from PortMiami, and around 30 to 40 miles north of Santa Lucia, Cuba, at the time of the incident, which occurred in the morning, according to Cruise Hive.

The Royal Caribbean, which operates the Icon of the Seas along with other groundbreakingly large cruise ships, told the outlet in a statement that their ship’s crew immediately notified the Coast Guard in the US and “launched a search and rescue operation”.

The incident occurred on the Icon of the Seas, a 1,196ft-long and 20-deck high cruise ship

“Our care team is actively providing support and assistance to the guest’s loved ones during this difficult time,” the cruise company added. “For the privacy of the guest and their family, we have no additional details to share.“

The ship, which holds way over 5,000 guests and only made its maiden voyage in January of this year, had embarked on the cruise on Saturday, but after the incident on Sunday, the cruise halted and stayed put for around two hours while the search continued, the outlet said.

The ship cost approximately $2bn to build

According to CruiseMapper tracking data, the Icon of the Seas is continuing with the cruise, with its next stop in Coco Cay in the Bahamas on Friday.

Zachary Normandian, 31, told The New York Post that the atmosphere on board the ship has been “dystopian” after people have been carrying on with their holiday aboard the ship after the tragedy.

“It just seemed like more people would have been like ‘Oh my gosh, what’s going on,’ but no, people were just going about their day,” he said.

The passenger recalled the moment that the man who went overboard was brought back to the ship, after he claimed that the captain informed the ship that the missing person had been found.

“Everyone in the dining room clapped,” Mr Normandian told the outlet. “We assumed that the guy was fine.”

At that point, however, they did not know that he had passed away.

The incident comes over a month after a similar tragedy on another Royal Caribbean cruise ship, the Liberty of the Seas when a 20-year-old man identified as Levion Parker is thought to have gone overboard during a trip around the Bahamas.

The cruise line immediately launched a search and rescue mission along with the US Coast Guard, but it was suspended after five days due to not being able to find him.

However, the cruise company has also witnessed some successful rescues in recent months, such as being able to recover a passenger who fell overboard from the Symphony of the Seas back in October.

The cruise, which had just left Barcelona at the time, said the guest was successfully brought back on board after falling shortly after it left the port.

Cruise passenger falls overboard while ship sails through fjord: officials

A cruise passenger went overboard while the ship was sailing through a fjord in Norway early Thursday, Norwegian officials said.

A rescue operation was carried out near the country’s Sognefjorden, Norway’s longest and deepest fjord, around 3:30 a.m. local time after a man went overboard from MSC Cruises’ MSC Euribia ship, HRS Southern Norway rescue service said in a statement posted to social media.

The agency said a helicopter took the passenger to a hospital and no one else was missing in the incident.

HRS Southern Norway didn’t give an update on the passenger’s condition.

NEW ZEALAND FISHERMAN SURVIVES 23 HOURS IN OCEAN AFTER FALLING OVERBOARD: ‘ABSOLUTE MIRACLE’

The incident happened near Flam, a village in southwest Norway during a seven-night cruise that left from Germany, according to Cruise Hive, a cruising news site.

The outlet reported that the ship had planned to dock all day Thursday in Flam.

The ship reportedly stopped a little more than 50 miles west-northwest of Flam after the man went overboard, and turned around.

ALASKA'A CAPTIAL STRIKES CONTROVERSIAL DEAL WITH CRUISE LINES TO LIMIT PASSENGER NUMBERS

No other details about how the man fell off the ship have been revealed.

The outlet said the ship has mainly stayed on schedule despite the incident, and is expected to arrive back in Kiel, Germany, on Saturday.

Fox News Digital has reached out to MSC Cruises and the Norwegian Central Rescue Service.

Another MSC Euribia passenger went overboard in March after the 23-year-old messaged his wife that he felt seasick after the ship had left Southamption, England.

"A passenger on board MSC Euribia went overboard on 16 March as the ship was sailing to Hamburg," MCS Cruises told FOX Business at the time. "This was reported to the authorities. The police in Southampton boarded the vessel today and investigated on behalf of the coroner. We are deeply saddened by this news and our thoughts are with the family at this very difficult time. Out of respect for the family’s privacy, we will refrain from disclosing any additional information."

Sources: Wasoko-MaxAB e-commerce merger faces delays amid headwinds in Africa

Last December, Nairobi's Wasoko and Cairo-based rival MaxAB -- two B2B e-commerce startups that enable retailers to order fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) from suppliers via their respective apps -- announced a planned "merger of equals." The aim was clear: create better economies of scale in a sector that holds a lot of promise in the region, but has faced significant challenges in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic. Nearly seven months on, however, extended due diligence amid ongoing restructuring and macroeconomic headwinds has delayed the closing of the deal, according to two people familiar with the matter who briefed TechCrunch on condition of anonymity. It's been described as "the largest merger in African e-commerce" by both companies.

Terrifying reality of cruises at night might be enough to put you off going on one for life

Terrifying reality of cruises at night might be enough to put you off going on one for life

One tiktoker put people off cruises for life.

Britt Jones

So many people think that going on a cruise is the best way to depart on a long holiday, but there’s one thing nobody talks about.

If you’ve yet to embark on one, there’s something you need to know about before you sh*t your pants late at night.

No, it’s not sharks - which is actually a possibility depending on where you travel .

It’s actually an unseen side of cruises that only people who’ve been on one will understand.

Even though there’s some stingy rules that you need to follow as a guest, the serene ocean view makes it all worth it.

Whether you decide to go for a week, two weeks or even buy a flat on the ship , you’re always in for an amazing time.

That is…until it gets dark.

The TikToker revealed the worst sight on a cruise. TikTok / @chasingthedream.hj

One TikToker revealed one thing about cruises that can make you forget how great it is.

User @chasingthedream.hj shared a horrid clip which might put some people off taking to the high seas.

The video begins by saying 'Cruises are great until you realise'.

He explained: "Cruises are great until you realise how dark the ocean gets at night."

Revealing that he has done a video before on this that racked up almost three million views, he mentioned that comments ask, 'what do you expect, it gets dark at night'.

The TikToker continued: "Unless you've been on a cruise ship, you're not going to understand how dark it gets at night.

"And then they say, 'all you're doing is showing the swimming pool', it's kind of because there's nothing to see if you look overboard at night because it's absolutely pitch black."

Going on to describe it as 'the blackest black you'll ever see', he showed viewers what he can see overboard, and it’s vile.

The absolutely pitch-black vastness beyond the boat is the stuff of nightmares, and it’s no surprise that people are actually afraid of boating.

Falling into that? No thanks.

Suddenly, people no longer wanted to go on a cruise. TikTok / @chasingthedream.hj

He then asked viewers if this is the content they want to see. A minute of him filming the pitch black of the ocean, instead of the parties and events held on the pool deck.

Well, they were interested in seeing it before they knew what it would look like, that’s for sure.

One user said: "Imagine falling overboard at night, you survive the fall. Nobody saw it. You see the ship leaving. You’re alone and see nothing." Creepy.

Another commented: "You can not pay me enough to go on a cruise".

A third put: "Now imagine being on the Titanic with no moonlight…"

A lot of people vowed to never step foot on a cruise ship after seeing that, and I can’t even blame them.
