Travel from Austria to Italy – Combining the Best of Regional Culture and Adventure

When it comes to pairing two neighbouring countries together for a trip, combine the best of both. When you travel from Austria to Italy, it’s easy to pair the Italian food capital of Emilia Romagna with the adventure playground of Austria’s Tirol. Here’s how.

Between Austria and Italy, the normal criss-cross of travel exists between western Austria’s Tirol region and Italy’s South Tirol region – an autonomous region of northern Italy that sits just below it, with a majority German-speaking population.

With travel in Europe being accessible via overland options, there’s no reason not to travel further than the regions of Austria and Italy that directly border one other. They are neighbours, so it’s a no-brainer for broader exploration. One summer, I combined the northern Italian region of Emilia Romagna with the Achensee region of Tirol in Austria – connected by a very scenic train journey of fewer than seven hours that weaved north through Italy and western Austria.

In just under two weeks I moved from a cultural city focus to a nature adventure haven, providing me with the best of both worlds as I sampled distinctly different destinations, cuisines and activities within a small and accessible space.

First Stop: Bologna, Emilia Romagna, Italy

Second stop: forlimpopoli, emilia romagna, italy, third stop: san marino, the world’s oldest republic (located within emilia romagna), fourth stop: achensee, tirol, austria, getting from austria to italy / italy to austria, trains in italy, trains in austria, finding and booking the best train routes, austria to italy – how to perfectly combine.

I flew into Bologna to start my trip, jumping headfirst into the historical and cultural overload of this medieval city of multi-Pantone orange, and scattered with big piazzas, churches and inviting streets lined with arched arcade walkways. It’s a beautiful place to stroll and live the Italian life, especially since Bologna is the food capital of the Emila Romagna – home to world-renowned specialities like Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese, Parma ham and Bolognese sauce.

After Bologna (and a day trip by train to Torrechiara castles in the ‘Food Valley’ region of Parma, and Rivalta castle in Piacenza), I continued by train to the small town of Forlimpopoli.

Every year, for nine nights, the town comes alive with an estimated 15,000 people who enjoy “Festa Artusiana”. This food festival pays homage to the legacy of Pellegrino Artusi – an Italian businessman and writer born in this town. He travelled the country and compiled Italy’s very first cookbook in 1891: “La Scienza in Cucina e l’arte di mangiar bene” (“Science in the Kitchen and the Art of Eating Well”).

To this day, most Italians own a copy, which contains over 700 recipes and their stories. It’s well worth planning the timing of your trip in July to coincide with this extraordinary event.

An adventure in San Marino – the “world’s oldest republic” that sits atop a mountain, snuggled within Italy’s Emilia Romagna region – beckons. It’s a Microstate that draws in the day-trippers to tick off another country and experience the spectacle of another medieval masterpiece.

It’s a fairytale and sucks you in faster than you can spit yourself out in 24 hours. Yet for those curious to stay at the UNESCO World Heritage Site a bit longer, you can not only live locally in the historical centre but also experience a whole other world waiting below it. One full of forests, caves and old abandoned water mills.

The Achensee region of Tirol is a real adventure week filled with hikes, climbing, biking and water sports. Nature is king in Austria, and Tirol is Narnia. For five days, I took up an active activity; mostly sports that I had never tried before, or ones where I could improve my existing skills.

Summer in Lake Archensee in Tirol, Austria

First up was a C-grade Via Ferrata that started with a one-hour hike on the Haidachstellwand trail, before clambering up the hundreds of metres of varying peaks. It was one of my most demanding challenges to date, but the adrenalin high was incredible.

Via Ferrata trip in Achensee, Tirol, Austria

I bike almost everywhere I go as a way of seeing more of a destination, the outskirts of a city, or as an alternative to hiking. I also use it as an opportunity to increase my mountain bike skills on more challenging terrains. Here, I took to an e-mountain bike to get out into the mountainous valleys and wind up (and down) the peaks for the glorious views of the lake, waterfalls and caverns. In this region of Tirol, the five hours of bike touring with local pros, Busslehner Sports was a great idea in having someone help me reach the hidden spots.

Biking tour in Achensee, Tirol, Austria

Achensee is home to Tirol’s biggest lake encased by mountain ranges, with rock climbing spots in abundance, and the trails get you to elevated views of the land. It was most certainly worth the muscle power and the effort to see this unparalleled Tyrolean beauty differently.

Rocking climbing lessons in Achensee, Tirol, Austria

My time there ended with an introduction to kite surfing lessons, getting to grips with the wind while standing in the aqua hues of the famous lake I had previously been looking down upon from higher altitudes.

With the travel trend moving to see more than one destination in one block of holiday time, why not combine Italy’s famous food valley and lesser-known cultural hotspots of Emilia Romagna, with one of Austria’s most adventurous playgrounds in Tirol?

Things to Know About Travel from Austria to Italy / Italy to Austria

  • I took the train from Rimini (Emilia Romagna, Italy) to Jenbach in (Tirol, Austria) – accessible hubs within their respective regions and central stations from which to travel further. This service was via the DB (Deutsche Bahn) service, at just under seven hours , eliminating the downside of traffic is travelling by car, whilst providing picture-perfect views of the Italian and Austrian countryside landscapes.
  • I recently took the train from Innsbruck to Verona to explore another region of Northern Italy – Veneto. READ MORE: The Most Beautiful Places to Visit in Veneto, Italy .
  • Timetables and ticket bookings can be found on the Italia Rail website , although it is easy to buy tickets for shorter journeys directly at the station. It is essential ALWAYS to remember to validate your ticket (via the ‘stamp’ machines) before boarding, otherwise, you will be asked to leave the train or fined.
  • Austria is well-connected by the ÖBB rail network  which also provides extensive services to neighbouring European countries.
  • When researching the best train routes, whether by price or distance, by preferred sites to use are the very comprehensive Seat 61 and the easy to use journey planner, Rome to Rio .

This trip was a part of the #Blogville Europe campaign showcasing the Emilia Romagna region of Italy and two regions of Tirol (one being Achensee), all via an overland journey, which was a beautiful adventure in itself. All opinions remain my own.

I was pretty unhappy with G Adventures at the beginning as I had expressed concerns with my health and wanted to cancel but they wouldn’t refund my money. However, the guide that I had, Andrei, was so incredible. He was so comforting, helpful, kind, and fun. I was so scared going into it but Andrei was so amazing and I truly could not have asked for a better guide. If I could give him a million stars I would.

Overall, the tour is great but the hotels in Florence and Venice definitely need to be changed as they are very old and cold hotels. Other than that, the last tour guide whose name is Abdel Salem, he is very very very very informative guide but it was so repetitive and he kept saying always 'eh' in after every word on mic and that made him not easy to understand, but he is a definitely good man. Also, Cheers to Antonio that he is very fun guide to travel with. Thank you Ali

The tour was well put together. The destinations were great and guides were good. Antonio was the best guide ever!! Very energetic and positive, and knowledgeable. He definitely gets 5/5 points. The only complaint is the hotel in Florence (West Florence hotel). This was the worst hotel I’ve stayed in my entire life. The room was so outdated, have to buy WiFi access, food was pretty bad and water in the shower was room temperature. No idea who rated that place 4*. Other than that, the tour was good and I’d do it all over again.

The tour was very nice with amazing views and Andy was a great guide. It would have been nice if the hotel we stayed at offered something warm for breakfast as well instead of just plain sandwitches, cereal and sweets.

Innsbruck – Lake Garda (Sportive)

Overall it was a good experience with Eurobike. I was very happy with their choices of hotels, very good locations and the service was great. The navigation app is not user friendly, as it logs you out repeatedly and multiple other glitches that makes it hard to navigate with. Also, in the documents sent to me, there should have been a GPS and a navigation app, but no GOS device was given to any of the bikers and one had to rely on the app with all its glitches. In addition it consumes a lot of battery. The bike has one pannier on the back and one bar bag on the handle. This made the bike a bit heavier, but of course lots of space to carry extra stuff if needed. There was no water bottle holder on the bike, and although I asked for one, this was declined and I was asked to use the pannier or the bar bag for my water. I tried the bar bag but then all the water from my water bottle leaked into the bag and I was left with no water on the road. I would highly suggest that Eurobike mount water bottle holders on the bikes at it is cheap yet very convenient and necessary.

Why You Don’t Need a Car for This Itinerary

At CORR Travel, I advocate for eco-travel and sustainable travel practices, such as using public transportation, biking, walking, etc. in lieu of renting a car when possible. This goes for travel within a city as well as between cities and countries. Why not try to reduce your carbon footprint while you travel?

Renting a vehicle, not to mention the cost of petrol, can be pricey, and gas-powered cars are not-so-hot for the environment. Plus, driving does not always guarantee you will get to another location quicker. When you’re driving and trying to follow directions, you could miss out on some of the lovely scenery.

I love trains, and the train service in Europe is extensive. Buses in Europe are also extensive and inexpensive. Trains and buses provide a time to relax, take a nap, or bone up on some ideas for the next town. Plus, you might meet a traveling companion on your solo travel.

You don’t have to get a rental car in Europe in order to have a great time in Europe. You definitely don’t need a car to have a good time for two weeks in Italy and Austria.

Trainline has Cheap Train and Bus Tickets

EN - 970x250

My question is, “Why not?” Italy and Austria are full of culture and history. Italy is also home to 58 UNESCO World Heritage sites, and Austria has 12.

Italy and Austria have one-of a kind activities, culinary delights and, of course, phenomenal natural and architectural beauty, and culinary delights that make indoor and outdoor activity options endless for different travel styles.

Plus, both Austria and Italy are very safe for solo travel. I have traveled to these locations multiple times myself as a solo female traveler, and had a wonderful time, and always can’t wait to go back. I’m sure you will, too.

This Italy and Austria itinerary gives you equal time in both countries: 7 days in Italy and 7 days in Austria.

John Barritt tram Milan Italy

Milan, in Italy’s northern region, is known for its mixture of the modern, high-end shopping, restaurants, fashion and design, with the classical of the Duomo di Milano and Leonardo da Vinci’s “The Last Supper” mural housed in the Santa Maria delle Grazie convent. The Milan Opera House is also historic.

Arriving in Milan

If you are arriving by air, you will more than likely arrive at the Milan Malpensa Airport (MXP) 51 km northwest of the city of Milan, or arriving at Bergamo Orio al Serio Airport, Bergamo (Orio al Serio Airport – BGY).

The cheapest and easiest way to get from the Milan Malpensa Airport to the Milano Centrale is the XP1 or R28 line, which will take about 55 minutes and cost a fraction of what a taxi would.  Each line departs every 10 minutes.

You also have the option to take a Malpensa Airport transfer or a Bergamo Orio al Serio Airport transfer .

Arriving by train or bus you should arrive directly into the Milano Centrale station as it is centrally placed in Milan.

From the Milano Centrale, either walk or catch the Milan Metro to your city center hotel .  The Milan Metro is inexpensive and easy to navigate. If your Milan city center hotel has airport shuttle service included in your hotel cost, then all the better.

Book Flights to Milan Early for the Best Deals

For the sake of this itinerary, your arrival day will not count. This way Day 2 marks the beginning of your Austria and Italy 14 day itinerary so you have time to rest and get the most out of your Europe solo travel because this Austria and Italy itinerary will keep you moving.

However, if you arrive in Milan early and want to hit the ground running, then you have an extra day.

Boat on water Varenna Lake Como Italy

Two days lend for a nice visit in Milan providing time leisurely time to see the major sites.  After spending your first day (or two) day in Milan and wish to get out of the city, I highly recommend doing a day trip to Lake Como , which is just an hour’s train ride north of Milan. Lake Como is stunning and the small towns and Lake Como boat rides are worth the day trip.

Near the German border, Salzburg is the 4 th largest city in Austria and dates back to late 7 th century.  Salzburg was the birthplace Mozart, is renowned for its Baroque architecture, and was listed as a  UNESCO World Heritage Site  in 1996.

Divided by the Salzach River with the “Old City” (Altstadt) on the left bank and the “New City” (Neustadt) on the right bank, Salzburg is easily accessible by foot to take in its historical and natural wonders by yourself or by walking tour . Cruise the River Salzach for more Salzburg sightseeing.

Once you take in the views of the Eastern Alps from the Fortress Hohensalzburg , you may be inspired to sing, “The hills are alive with the sound of music!” Well, it inspired me. The Austrian views are that beautiful.

Vienna, Austria

Schonbrunn Palace Vienna 4 Day Itinerary

The capital of Austria, Vienna rests on the Danube River, which runs for 1770 miles and through 10 countries. Vienna is famous for its opera and the Vienna Opera House , stunning baroque architecture, music, and tasty strudel and coffee.

Stroll leisurely along the streets taking in the Schmetterlinghaus (butterfly house), art museums, St. Stephen’s Cathedral and a ride on the Ringstrasse Tram before absorbing the city’s skyline at the top of the Giant Ferris Wheel in the Prater district.

The opulent Hapsburg palaces continue in Vienna with the Schloss Schönbrunn Palace , which, with its grounds and Viennese coffee in Cafe Glordiette, could absorb an afternoon.

If you’re into wine (like me), the Heurigen area wine region within the Vienna city limits and its more than 1,700 acres of vineyards is bound to get your attention, or get out of the city altogether for wine tasting in the UNESCO World Heritage Wachau Valley with Melk Abbey visit . A must .

Unwind from it all in an outdoor café people watching on a lazy afternoon. Vienna is bound to prove to you why it has been ranked the top city in the world to live ten years in a row.

The capital of Italy’s Veneto region, Venice is built on more than 100 small islands in the Venetian Lagoon separated only by canals, including the Grand Canal thoroughfare, and linked by more than 400 bridges, where one cannot help but take a gondola ride .

At the entrance of the Adriatic Sea, this “City of Bridges” is considered to have been the first real international financial center of the world and still houses historic Renaissance and Gothic structures like San Marco Basilica, the Doge’s Palace and the Campanile bell tower – all around the central Piazza San Marco, famous for its pigeons and outdoor lounging.

If you booked a round-trip ticket to fly home from Milan, it is only a 2.5 hour train ride from Venice allowing most of your last day in Venice. If you booked a one-way ticket from separate cities, then you will just have more time in Venice.

Ensure to arrive at the Marco Polo Airport pre-checked in and at least two hours before your flight departs. If you are like me, that sinking feeling may start to settle on you while you as you are in the airport knowing you are leaving Europe.

Be glad, though. You just had a wonderful two weeks in Italy and Austria, and you can always go back.

Scenic view of Hallstatt mountain village with Hallstaetter Lake in the Austrian Alps, region of Salzkammergut, Austria

It is simple to get from Austria to Italy, but traveling by train makes it so much easier. Why overspend on a flight for such a short trip or worry about renting a car, when you can sit back, relax and enjoy the scenery as you pass through the Alps by train? Another reason to take the train is that you can save money when booking your tickets between Austria and Italy with ItaliaRail.

The Austrian Federal Railways, or Osterreichische Bundesbahnen (OBB), operates the 5,800-kilometer rail system within Austria. The Westbahnhof and Sudbahnhof are Vienna's major railway terminals. Westbahnhof is the gateway to Germany, Switzerland, and the rest of northern and central Europe, while Sudbahnhof is the gateway to southern and eastern Europe. Westbahnhof has two levels, and if you are arriving by train you will be on the top level. The main station concourse is at street level. Sudbahnhof is a three-level terminal with the train platforms located on the middle and top levels.

You can buy Eurail, German rail passes, and other European passes at railpass.com .

Please Note:

When traveling from Italy to Austria, it is highly recommended to purchase a ticket and a seat reservation. The tickets are therefore only valid for the day and train booked.

Pre-sale and date change

The ticket can be purchased up to three months prior to the date of departure, at authorized points of sale. If, once purchased, the departure date needs to be changed, a new ticket must be bought in the country where the original ticket was purchased.

Prices vary according to:

  • The service and accommodation: night or day, First or Second Class
  • There is a no smoking policy onboard this train
  • All Italian tickets, both domestic and cross border must be validated at the machines on the platform before use. Failure to do this will result in a fine of up to 200 Euros.

Driving from Austria to Italy by Car – An Unforgettable Experience

travel from austria to italy

For avid travelers seeking the perfect blend of picturesque landscapes and exhilarating road adventures, the drive from Austria to Italy through the iconic Brenner Pass offers an unforgettable journey through the heart of the Alps. While the trip promises stunning panoramas and exciting twists and turns, it’s crucial to be well-prepared, ensuring a smooth and hassle-free expedition. One essential element to keep in mind for your trip is the need for a vignette when crossing the Brenner Pass. Let’s delve into the key insights and tips for this thrilling cross-country drive.

The Scenic Route: Austria to Italy via the Brenner Pass

The journey begins amidst the breathtaking vistas of the Austrian Alps, as you traverse the well-maintained Austrian highways. As you approach the renowned Brenner Pass, get ready to be captivated by the majestic landscapes and the engineering marvels that have made this route a vital artery for European travel. The pass itself offers a blend of alpine beauty and a testament to human ingenuity, making it a must-visit for any road trip enthusiast.

Opting for a Rental Car

For those embarking on this scenic journey from Austria to Italy, renting a car offers the flexibility and convenience to explore the region at your own pace. Various reputable car rental services are available in major Austrian cities such as Vienna, Salzburg, and Innsbruck, providing an array of vehicle options suitable for different travel preferences. Additionally, major Italian cities such as Milan, Verona, and Venice also offer a multitude of rental car agencies, allowing for a seamless transition as you continue your adventures in Italy. Ensure that you familiarize yourself with the rental terms, including insurance coverage and any restrictions on crossing borders.

Understanding the Vignette Requirement

It’s crucial to be aware of the necessity of a vignette. The vignette is required for vehicles using the Austrian motorways and expressways. While driving through Austria, including the Brenner Pass, ensure that you have the appropriate vignette. This ensures compliance with Austrian road regulations and helps in maintaining the infrastructure of the roads. Unfortunately, only in Germany , a different toll system applies.

Planning for a Smooth Journey

To make the most of your adventure, meticulous planning is key. Research the specific requirements for obtaining a vignette, including where to purchase one, the costs involved, and the duration of its validity. Typically, you can obtain the vignette at gas stations, border crossings, and various other authorized points of sale. You can also obtain one online. Remember that the vignette is not only essential for your seamless travel but also contributes to the maintenance and development of the road network, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for all travelers.

Tips for an Unforgettable Drive

Scenic Stopovers: Take advantage of the numerous scenic spots and rest areas along the way to soak in the natural beauty and capture those awe-inspiring moments.

Local Cuisine Delights: Indulge in the delectable local cuisines as you make pit stops in charming towns and villages. Sample the authentic flavors and immerse yourself in the cultural richness of the region.

Cultural Exploration: Consider making detours to explore nearby attractions and cultural landmarks. Discover the hidden gems and immerse yourself in the local heritage to enrich your travel experience.

A Journey to Remember

Traversing the Brenner Pass from Austria to Italy is more than just a road trip; it’s an immersive experience that combines the thrill of driving with the enchantment of stunning natural beauty. Ensure a seamless and compliant journey by obtaining the necessary vignette, allowing you to contribute to the preservation and development of this vital European travel route. Embrace the adventure, cherish the moments, and make unforgettable memories along the way.

2 New Trains Launching This Summer Will Connect These 6 European Destinations

Call it a direct effect of the climate urgency or simply nostalgia for the 20th century, but train travel has definitely made a triumphant comeback in Europe.

There seems to be a new, exciting cross-border rail service being announced every month now.

Following the new sleeper connecting as many as 7 historic cities and the new budget route linking Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands and Switzerland, an additional two trains are launching between six other European destinations.

Just in time for summer, you can now travel between 6 cities in Austria and Slovenia , and Italy and Croatia without resorting to one-stop flights or annoyingly slow Flixbuses:

Austria-Slovenia

Austria and Slovenia are launching not one, but two passenger services connecting five of their key destinations: now, you can travel from Graz , the second largest city in Austria, to Maribor and Ljubljana in Slovenia, as well as from Villach , in Austria, to Ljubljana.

A collaborative project between Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) and Slovenian Railways, the new train routes will provide ‘better and more frequent' connections and help travelers commute more seamlessly between the two neighboring Central European nations.

The Graz-Ljubljana service is scheduled to run six times daily, calling at the Slovenian towns of Maribor and Pragersko.

From start to finish, the journey takes 3h17 and tickets are selling for as cheap as $15.26 one-way on Rail Europe .

Traveling from Ljubljana in Slovenia to Villach, a secondary destination in Austria often overlooked by tourists, is a two-hour direct train ride.

Second Class tickets cost $10.35 when booked some days in advance.

These trains are already up and running for summer, and according to Kurt Bauer, Head of Long-distance Passenger Services & New Rail Business at ÖBB, the goal is to have hourly service between Graz and Maribor, and two-hourly trains between Villach and Ljubljana ‘ within the next three years ‘.

Why Visit Graz?

Despite not being as popular as Vienna or Hallstatt, Graz is one of Austria's most relevant cities.

It is the second-largest conurbation in the country, meaning there's no shortage of sightseeing spots, and its historic center is among the best-preserved in the entire continent.

Called ‘Altstadt', it is a UNESCO-listed hilly maze of winding streets lined by Baroque buildings, all leading up to Schlossberg, a fortress and verdant park perched on a hill overlooking the city.

Not only is it incredibly picturesque, but it is also entirely walkable.

You can see most, if not all, of Graz in one day on foot, and though we'd definitely encourage you to stay longer to truly take in the sights and savor the local gastronomy, it can easily be added to your itinerary as a stopover on the way from Austria to Slovenia.

Why Visit Villach?

Villach is even more compact and less touristy than Graz, as it's fairly remote and difficult to visit as a day trip from any of the larger Austrian cities-it sits near the Italian and Slovenian borders-yet it's beautiful all the same and highly worth the detour.

Dating back to Ancient Roman times, it straddles the banks of the alpine Drava River, which extends from Austria into Slovenia, and its pointy church spires, colorful Old Town , and nearby imposing Landskron Castle all have majestic snow-capped peaks as a backdrop.

Among Austrians, Villach is famous as a wellness destination , mainly due to the famous KärntenTherme Warmbad-Villach, a thermal bath and sauna complex in the city's outskirts costing an affordable $18 to book for the day .

In Slovenia

Why not visit pragersko.

Pragersko is more of a transitory stop between Graz and Maribor than, you know, a destination: with only a thousand or so residents, it's not like there's an awful lot to see in the area other than, well, a parish church and modern developments.

Why Visit Maribor?

The second stop on the Graz-Ljubljana line, Maribor, is nestled in the wine region of Slovenia, further down the Drava River from Villach.

It's easily one of Europe's best-kept secrets , which very few foreign tourists (other than Austrians, maybe) have discovered.

Its Glavni Trg (Old Town square) is dominated by a Renaissance Town Hall dating back to 1515 , long before North America was even settled by the English, and the main landmark in town, Maribor Castle, is a stately Baroque mansion boasting an impressive collection of regional artifacts.

Other than strolling the scenic riverfront, tourists can visit local museums to learn more about Maribor's fascinating History and sample Slovenian cuisine across several local-owned cafes (our personal favorite is štruklji , best described as rolled dumplings filled with cheese).

Why Visit Ljubljana?

I mean, look at this skyline: isn't it the stuff of fairy tales, downright gorgeous, and just makes you want to book the next train out?

Ljubljana is arguably one of the prettiest capitals in Europe. Its very low rates of crime and pickpocketing and its perfect walkability make us love it even more .

It is cut through by the meandering Ljubljanica River, and the postcard-ready, cafe-lined riverfront, the ornate bridges, and the numerous cobbled lanes reaching hidden courtyards will only make you wish you had allotted more time to explore the Slovenian capital in depth.

If you're here on a short visit, the main points of interest are Ljubljana Castle-you can't miss it, it's the one huge medieval fortification on a hill in the city-Dragon Bridge, guarded by menacing-looking winged reptiles, its companion Triple Bridge, the UNESCO-inscribed Central Market and Tivoli Park.

Wait, we're not done yet.

Remember Italy and Croatia also have a surprise up their sleeve?

Italy-Croatia (via Slovenia)

The Adriatic siblings are finally launching a long-awaited train service between Friuli-Venezia Giulia, the northeasternmost region of Italy, to Istria, a Croatian peninsula widely known for its Italian origins and rich Roman heritage.

Operated by Slovenian Railways again, this time in collaboration with Croatian Railways, the service was inaugurated between Villa Opicina, in the Italian metropolitan zone of Trieste , and the Istrian city of Rijeka (alternatively known as Fiume) in Croatia on April 24 .

Prior to the introduction of this train, tourists traveling between Trieste and Rijeka would normally use buses as the least complicated mode of transport, requiring no intermediate stops.

However, buses do not run as frequently, and there can be long delays, especially when there are spot border checks.

The new Stadler FLIRT trains deployed on this route have a low-floor design that makes it easier for people with limited mobility to board.

They're also equipped with spacious toilets, free WiFi, charging stations, panoramic windows, and air conditioning.

The daily service covers the distance from Friuli-Venezia Giulia to Rijeka in roughly two hours, departing at 7:50 a.m. and arriving at 9:54 a.m. while returning trains leave Rijeka at 6:25 p.m., arriving back in Villa Opicina at 8:40 p.m.

The train stops at Sežana, Divača, and Pivka, in Slovenia, before making a U-turn south and heading towards Bistrica, the last Slovenian town before it reaches Šapjane and Opatija Matulji in Croatia, coming to a final halt in coastal Rijeka at last.

This route will remain in operation until September 30 at the earliest, and tickets can be purchased directly at train stations, with one-way tickets costing only $8.55.

It's worth noting that the trains do not depart from Trieste , but Villa Opicina instead, a small municipality near the Slovene border.

There are buses leaving from the city center of Trieste (Piazza Oberdan) to Villa Opicina multiple times per hour, taking only half an hour to get there.

Why Visit Trieste?

Trieste is a lesser-known Italian city serving as the capital of the largely-unexplored Friuli-Venezia Giulia, which made headlines in 2022 for offering to pay tourists to visit as so very few were.

It's famous for its lively Adriatic port , large squares flanked by palatial structures and old churches.

Noteworthy landmarks are centered around the centuries-old historic core and old marina, including Unity of Italy Square, Trieste Cathedral, built as early as 1320 , the local Serbian Orthodox Church, and the Castle of San Giusto, a medieval fortification sitting on elevated grounds.

Due to its proximity to Slovenia and Austria, it's distinctly Central European in character.

Its cityscape is characterized by Habsburg buildings and is multicultural.

Don't be surprised if you hear some Slovenian being spoken or if Slavic-influenced food is served in restaurants.

Why Visit Rijeka?

If Triste is known as the most Slavic city in Italy, Rijeka (or Fiume) could easily be its most-Italian-city-in-Croatia counterpart.

Like all ancient cities of the Adriatic Coast, it can be traced back to the Roman period, and it remained staunchly Italian in character well into the 20th century.

Rijeka is part of Croatia now, but the narrow pastel-toned buildings, a patisserie with different flavors of calzoni on display, and a host of ancient monuments that have survived the brunt of the Yugoslav years are living proof the city remains unequivocally Italian in character.

Besides its cultural mishmash, the once-disputed city is equally gateway to the wider Istria, a region of outstanding natural beauty full of unspoiled Adriatic beaches, where waters are of the shiniest blue, and Roman-built towns like Pula, home to a large amphitheater, and the Venetian-era Rovinj.
