Results and Highlights from the Tour of Flanders

Tadej Pogačar and Lotte Kopecky captured the wins at another thrilling edition of the Tour of Flanders.

The Tour of Flanders is always one of the most thrilling of the Monuments and this year’s edition was no different. Both the men’s and women’s races brought some great excitement to the Belgian cobbles.

Men’s Race Recap

At 273.4 kilometers with six cobble segments and 19 climbs, the men’s Tour of Flanders—the second Monument race of the season—runs from Brugge to Oudenaarde in Belgium. This year was the fastest iteration of the race ever run, with strong tailwinds (and headwinds) breaking up the peloton from the start. The race was marred by many crashes, and the racing was some of the most exciting we’ve seen all season.

As usual, with Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates), Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) and Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Deceuninck) in the mix, those were the riders to watch, but there were quite a few other contenders on the start line. Teams like Ineos-Grenadiers and Movistar made some early attacks, trying to test the peloton, but the early kilometers of the race were marked by small attacks that the peloton swallowed up. The wind also played a part, splitting the peloton and forcing top riders like Van der Poel to work at the front.

At 70 kilometers into the race, a crash took out several riders and split the newly-reformed peloton—but that wouldn’t be the only crash of the day. At 140 kilometers to go, a huge crash in the peloton took out many riders including Peter Sagan—racing his last Tour of Flanders before his upcoming retirement—and Tim Wellens. The crash was caused by a Bahrain rider who went onto the grass, then swung back onto the road into the peloton. Wellens was unfortunately forced to pull out of the race, as was Sagan. The Bahrain Victorious rider Filip Maciejuk was disqualified for causing the crash. (Sadly, another Bahrain rider caused other crash a while later, though with less catastrophic results—all bad news for another race favorite, Bahrain’s Matej Mohorič.)

Meanwhile, the crashes allowed a group of eight to continue to grow their advantage in a breakaway. Jasper De Buyst, Guillaume Van Keirsbulck, Daan Hoole, Elmar Reinders, Filippo Colombo, Jonas Rutsch, Tim Merlier and Hugo Houle. The group didn’t contain riders from Van der Poel, Van Aert or Pogacar’s teams—which means there was a lot of firepower in the peloton working to close that gap, though with eight big teams including Loton Dsny, Trek Segafredo and EF up in the lead, there were also plenty of teams who had no reason to work. The leaders grew their advantage to four minutes, but by 100 kilometers to go, the gap was closing, down to two minutes.

A smaller attack group with Mads Peterson and dark horse race favorite Stephan Küng along with seven others went after the leaders, splitting from the peloton and closing the gap to under a minute with 90 kilometers to go—a minute ahead of the peloton. By 77 kilometers to go, the chase group made contact with the breakaway, creating a 19-rider strong lead group, nearly two minutes ahead of the peloton containing many of the race favorites.

Another huge crash in the peloton at 70 kilometers to go took out Mohorič as well as Binian Girmay and Aime De Gendt.

With 55 kilometers to go, attacks began to bring the big three—Van der Poel, Van Aert or Pogačar—back to the front of the race. UAE launched the attack, with Pogačar riding up the steep cobbled climb, riding Tom Pidcock off his wheel as Van Aert gritted his way up the hill, chasing hard. Pidcock and teammate Magnus Sheffield led Van Aert up the climb as Pogacar appeared to pretty much sprint away from the peloton, looking entirely unbothered by his monumental effort. As the climbs came fast and furious, he seemed comfortable attacking the narrow climbs alone.

Behind them, Van Aert and Pidcock were joined by Van der Poel, essentially creating a cyclocross superstar chase group. It wasn’t a surprise when they caught Pogačar and LaPorte, who had eased up slightly.

The lead groups hit the famed Koppenburg climb—but the real camera view was Pogačar, Van Aert and Van der Poel smashing the pedals together surging up the classic climb. Ahead of them, the lead group of 11 worked hard to maintain their lead on the three superpowers of cycling, with Neilson Powless, one of the few Americans in the race, in the mix in the lead group. The lead group continued to dwindle as the ‘big three’ powered up the climbs, picking up riders who’d been dropped from the lead group as they went. At 28 kilometers to go, Van der Poel attacked hard and Pogačar just barely made it on his wheel as Van Aert struggled to hang on and began to fall behind as more climbs loomed ahead.

Pogačar surged again, catching and riding through Pederson, who was caught by a chasing Van der Poel. With 17 kilometers to go, Pogačar was finally in the lead, opening a 13 second gap, though Van der Poel refused to give up while Pederson tried to hang on. A chase group with many of the original attackers along with Van Aert followed 40 seconds back.

While Pogačar was utterly uncatchable, Van der Poel never gave up the chase, stretching to 30 second behind Pogačar. Behind him, the large chase group with Van Aert, Pederson, Kasper Asgreen, Neilson Poless, Kung, Matteo Jorgensen and Fred Wright were a minute back, all in contention for the final spot on the podium.

It was no surprise when Pogačar sailed in for the win—in the fastest race time ever recorded—with Van der Poel smoothly coming in for second place. The real sprint came under a minute later, led out by Pederson, with Van Aert right on his wheel. The two finished in a photo finish, with Pederson just inching out Van Aert for third place.

“I could retire after today and be proud of my career, ” Pogačar said after the race. But thankfully, the young rider has no intention of retiring anytime soon.

Women’s Race Recap

The women’s iteration of the Tour of Flanders is slightly shorter, with only five cobbled sections and 13 climbs over 156 kilometers. Favorites included last year’s winner Lotte Kopecky along with two of her other SD Worx teammates, Demi Vollering and Marlyn Reusser. But it was Trek Segafredo that kept the race interesting, as did the Movistar squad led by Annemiek van Vleuten.

Unlike the men’s version of the Tour, the climbs start early on the women’s route, but the peloton managed to stay together early on. For the first 60 kilometers, the peloton largely stayed together, and was relatively calm. But similar to the men’s race, a big crash as riders came into Oudenaarde took out quite a few riders in the main peloton.

At around the halfway mark, Ally Wollaston of AG Insurance made the first effective attack of the day, creating a gap of 30 seconds. After another crash for the peloton, though, the SD Worx team started making moves towards the front of the race in order to protect their riders and start to lead the race. UAE Team ADQ and Trek Segafredo also started moving riders towards the front, anticipating SD Worx going on the attack.

With two-thirds of the race completed, Elise Chabbey went on the attack, and Van Vleuten unfortunately had a crash from the back of the peloton. She got back up, but had to fix her chain and chase back on. Meanwhile, SD Worx, Trek Segafredo and UAE all sent riders up the road to chase the leaders.

Hitting the steep cobbled Koppenburg climb, the leaders were absorbed by the chasers, and the groups all shattered on the climb. Only two riders were able to get over the climb without dismounting—race favorite Marlyn Reusser along with UAE’s Silvia Persico—while Lorena Wiebes and Lotte Kopecky had to remount and run. Leanne Lipert dropped a chain and had to stop to fix it, forcing her to mount an inspired chase.

But by the top of the climb, only four riders remained at the front, all race favorites: SD Worx’ Wiebes, Reusser and Kopecky with Persico hanging on. Trek Segafredo, UAE, Canyon SRAM, Jumbo Visma, and SD Worx all had riders in the chase group, just 22 seconds down. The peloton behind them was shattered on the climb, and small groups were strung out across the course.

Wiebes was the first rider to drop from the lead group as they hit one of the several climbs left in the race. Reusser also dropped off the back, and Persico hung onto Kopecky’s wheel, avoiding her time at the front. Behind them, Kopecky’s teammates Vollering and Reuser with Shirin van Anrooij of Trek Segafredo and Kasia Niewiadoma of Canyon SRAM chased at 20 seconds down with 27 kilometers to go. They were joined by Juliette Labous and Elisa Longo-Borghini.

On the muddy, slippery climb at 18 kilometers to go, Kopecky attacked and dropped Persico, while the now seven-woman chase group fought their way up the slippery cobbles. From there, she was unstoppable, growing her gap quickly as she worked her way up the final climbs of the day. The chase group surged behind Persico, struggling to catch her on the climb, reabsorbing her on the tight cobbled ascent.

As the kilometers clicked down, the chasers became more chaotic. In the chase group, the SD Worx riders clearly irritated the small chase group by refusing to do any work in order to protect the lead Kopecky had, while riders like Labous tried to close the gap.

Kopecky powered to the finish line as the six-woman chase group 45 seconds back started to set up for the sprint for the final two podium positions.

It has to be said: There’s something kind of awesome about hearing a remixed version of All I Do Is Win from a bystander as Kopecky sailed by just meters from the finish. And she had plenty of time to celebrate her win.

Behind her, the chase group began the long sprint to the finish line, led out by Vollering. Longo-Borghini came up the side, but it was Vollering who snapped up second place with Longo-Borghini in third.

It’s worth noting: The women’s Tour of Flanders race overlapped with the men’s race if you were trying to watch live, so if you did miss it while you were watching the men’s, definitely go back and watch the replay!

2023 Tour of Flanders: Preview, schedule, how to watch both men's and women's classic races live

Mathieu van der Poel is favourite to defend his title at the iconic one-day men's classic race on the Belgian cobbles, while Annemiek van Vleuten chases a third women's crown in her final season.

On Sunday (2 April), the  Tour of Flanders (Ronde van Vlaanderen; Tour des Flandres) will celebrate its 107th men's and 20th women's editions as the first of two back-to-back cobbled monuments (Paris–Roubaix follows next week).

Men have raced 'De Ronde' annually uninterrupted since 1919. This year, for the first time since 2016, the race begins in Bruges/Brugge – the first year of an agreement that will see Bruges/Brugge and Antwerp alternate start-line duties. The race will end in Oudenaarde, as it has done every year since 2012, after 273.4km (169.9mi).

The women, meanwhile, face a 156.6km (97.3mi) course set around Oudenaarde but also encompassing swathes of the men's route.

Mathieu van der Poel of the Netherlands and Belgium's own  Lotte Kopecky are the respective defending champions. Van der Poel is looking for his third title in four races, having also triumphed in 2020.

Welcome back to Bruges/Brugge. That's the main headline from this year's men's Ronde van Vlaanderen course , as the race returns to the same UNESCO World Heritage Site start town it had from 1998 through 2016.

The Grote Markt in Bruges/Brugge is where the peloton will start from; the change in start city from Antwerp means the route south to Oudenaard is also changing.

While the daunting Oude Kwaremont – Paterberg finale will still take pride of place, the course for the first 136km (84.5 miles) to the first ascent of the Oude Kwaremont looks a little less heavy on the legs compared to last year, with only a single cobbled sector (down from two) at Huisepontweg and a generally flatter parcours, albeit with an additional côte.

However, the traditional loop around Oudenaard will again test the riders, with 18 climbs from the first ascent of the Oude Kwaremont to the finish. Once more, the Paterberg is the last climb of the day with 13 km to go before a fast, flat finish. Across the day's 19 classified hills, the riders will climb 3,227m (10,587ft).

The women will ride a course very similar to the ones they are used to – a loop around Oudenaard, beginning at the Markt and ending on Minderbroedersstraat as the men do.

As with the men's race, Huisepontweg at 49.6km is the first cobbled sector; unlike the men, the women's peloton will already have had to climb their first test – the Tiegemberg.

Twelve further climbs await the women, who will face the same final 45km as the men, starting with the notoriously difficult cobbled climb up the Kopperberg (113.4km) and concluding with the Oude Kwaremont – Paterberg one-two to finish. A total elevation gain of 2,682m (8,799ft) awaits the peloton.

Men's race - 2023 riders to watch.

• Mathieu van der Poel – the defending champion from the Netherlands. The Alpecin-Deceuninck rider also triumphed in 2020 and was beaten into second place in 2021. He will aim for a fourth straight podium finish on the back of winning Milano-Sanremo two weeks ago.
• Tadej Pogacar – the all-round phenomenon from Slovenia is looking for his fourth career monument win (2 at Il Lombardia, 1 at Liège-Bastogne-Liège). This is just his second appearance in De Ronde, having finished agonisingly off the podium in fourth last year.
• Kasper Asgreen – the Dane was the surprise winner in 2021, knocking van der Poel into second place. His Soudal–Quick Step team can also count on…
• Julian Alaphilippe – the two-time road race world champion, who looked set to challenge for the 2020 race before crashing into a motorcycle while in the winning breakaway.
• Wout van Aert – Jumbo-Visma's leader in Flanders, who was forced to miss last year's race after catching Covid. Widely considered the biggest rival to Van der Poel, Van Aert will be hoping to upgrade his 2020 second place to the top step of the podium. Enters off the back of a second place at Gent-Wevelgem.
• Greg van Avermaet – even aged 37, don't rule out the Belgian on his home roads. The 2016 Olympic road race champion is a specialist in the one-day classics, and has finished on the podium in Oudenaarde four times without ever winning the race.
• Tom Pidcock – the Briton is, like Van der Poel and Van Aert, used to riding on different terrain as a cyclo-cross, mountain bike, and road rider. Pidcock claimed his first major one-day win earlier this year at Strade Bianche and has experience of winning on cobbles, triumphing in the 2021 Brabantse Pijl and 2019 Paris–Roubaix Espoirs junior race.

Women's race - 2023 riders to watch

• Annemiek van Vleuten – the Dutch women's cycling legend has announced that 2023 will be her final season. A two-time winner of the women's Tour of Flanders (2011, 2021), Van Vleuten is no stranger to success in all forms of road cycling, from long stage races to one-day classics, and will hope to sign off from Oudenaarde with a third victory.
• Lotte Kopecky – defending champion from 2022, Kopecky will have the home support behind her. A two-time national road race champion, she already has a pair of one-day classic race wins under her belt this season and will be one of the favourites for a third.
• Marianne Vos – the London 2012 Olympic road race champion hasn't won in a one-day race since Gent-Wevelgem in 2021, but count Vos out at your peril. The vastly experienced Dutchwoman is still a force to be reckoned with on her day.
• Elisa Longo Borghini – the Trek-Segafredo team leader, who won bronze in the last two Olympic road races, is a previous winner of the event (2015) and will be supported by fellow Italian and 2021 world champion Elisa Balsamo.

How to watch the Tour of Flanders in the UK

In the UK, live coverage of the 2024 Tour of Flanders will continue to be broadcast via Eurosport and Discovery+ – with the same commentators that featured on GCN+.

Tour of Flanders 2023: Five men and five women to watch on Sunday

Taking a closer look at the favourites ahead of this year's Ronde van Vlaanderen

The centrepiece event of the Belgian Spring Classics takes place this weekend, and some of the biggest names in the men’s and women’s WorldTour are set to do battle once more. Taking place on Sunday, the 107th edition of the men’s Tour of Flanders is widely anticipated to be a scrap between the trio who largely stole the show at the recent E3 Saxo Classic . 'De Ronde' is undoubtedly one of the biggest one-day races on the planet, with swarms of cycling fans gathering on the race's iconic cobbled climbs, including the Oude Kwaremont, in their thousands to watch the riders take on the brutal course in Belgium. The men’s race is due to start in Brugge for the first time since 2016, before finishing on the outskirts of Oudenaarde 273 kilometres later. First established in 2004, the women’s race starts and finishes in Oudenaarde and includes the same hellish climbs as the men’s edition. Lotte Kopecky captured the victory while wearing the Belgian national champions jersey last year, and the thousands of local fans lining the course will be screaming her name once more on Sunday. Here’s Cycling Weekly’s five men and five women to watch when the racing gets going. 

Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Deceuninck)

With the way that Mathieu van der Poel has begun his spring campaign, it’s hard to bet against him completing the Flanders hat-trick on Sunday. After his scintillating Milan-San Remo victory , Van der Poel lit up the E3 Saxo Classic in his final racing appearance before the Ronde and Roubaix. The flying Dutchman was as aggressive as always, rampaging up the Taaienberg in the first of a series of brutal attacks that drew Wout van Aert and Tadej Pogačar out into the open. While Van Aert ended up snatching the win from his grasp, Van der Poel made him work for it, every second of the way, and will do exactly the same again when the Ronde gets underway on Sunday.

Tom Pidcock (Ineos Grenadiers)

After winning Strade Bianche in early March , Pidcock suffered slight misfortune when a crash at Tirreno-Adriatico left him with minor concussion. The Yorkshireman was forced to sit out Milan-San Remo, although made his return to racing with a respectable 11th place at Dwars door Vlaanderen. Before his injury, Pidcock would have been widely expected to contend for the San Remo title, and on his day, is more than capable of matching the trio of Van Aert, Pogačar and Van der Poel. Now that Pidcock has managed to get another race day under his belt ahead of his third appearance in Flanders on Sunday, the Ineos man will be full of optimism on his chances of competing with his aforementioned rivals. 

Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma)  

Coming into the Ronde, Van Aert will be bursting with confidence after already getting one over on Van der Poel and Pogačar last week. The Jumbo-Visma man could follow every single move from Van der Poel at E3, and was even able to put his long standing rival on the ropes on several occasions during the race. After losing out to the Dutchman in final sprints on previous occasions, beating his rival in last week's final dash to the line will have provided Van Aert with a timely feather in his cap ahead of the Flanders cobbles. However, Van Aert’s biggest weapon will be his reliable, and fiercely loyal right hand man Christophe Laporte . Last weekend, Van Aert and Laporte memorably dominated Gent-Wevelgem before the Belgian handed his teammate the victory. As a result, Laporte will undoubtedly be right by his friend's side on Sunday, backing him all the way in the scrap for victory in the Monument. 

Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates)  

Since he was outfoxed by Van der Poel in the closing stages of last year’s Ronde, Pogačar will be determined not to let lightning strike twice on Sunday. The Slovenian was in the thick of the action at the E3 Classic, and was largely able to match each acceleration from Van der Poel and Van Aert, even making his own big attack on the Oude Kwaremont as he looked to stretch things. Similarly to Jumbo-Visma, Pogačar’s team is full of solid Classics riders including the likes of Tim Wellens. Pogačar is also undoubtedly the best climber of the three favourites. If he brings his climbing legs to the cobbles once again on Sunday, and the likes of Wellens are able to stick with him until the final phase of racing, then the two-time Tour de France winner may well add yet another Monument to his palmarès this weekend. 

Christophe Laporte (Jumbo-Visma)

After winning two-major Classics in a matter of days, Christophe Laporte firmly deserves his place in the top five overall contenders for Flanders. Taking victory at both Gent-Wevelgem and Dwars door Vlaanderen in such quick succession is no mean feat, proving what many already knew; Laporte is yet another fearsome weapon in the Jumbo-Visma arsenal of talent. Moving to the Dutch team from Cofidis has provided the Frenchman with an opportunity to really raise his level. He took an excellent stage victory at last summer’s Tour de France, and is a rider equally as formidable as the likes of Wout van Aert. As was well documented, the Frenchman was largely handed victory in Gent-Wevelgem by his Belgian teammate, although that shouldn’t take away from his own capabilities whatsoever. After his Dwars victory, Laporte reiterated that he would be firmly in the service of Van Aert on Sunday. However, should things go wrong for Van Aert in some way, expect Laporte to be given the nod to push on and challenge at the sharp end of the action.

Demi Vollering (SD Worx) 

Coming into the Tour of Flanders, the strength in depth at SD Worx is somewhat terrifying. Vollering is one of four riders at the Dutch team potentially capable of winning, and showed she’s in strong form with victory at Dwars door Vlaanderen on Wednesday. Earlier this year, the team’s strength was no more evident than when Vollering and Kopecky both found themselves together going into the last 500 metres of Strade Bianche. The duo sprinted for the line, with Vollering eventually coming out on top. The Dutchwoman has won two of the three one-day races she’s started this season, and on paper is her team’s most in-form rider. Her best result in Flanders was fifth in 2021, but she certainly has the strength and power to do better this time around. The only barrier to Vollering winning Flanders could well come from within her own ranks.

Marianne Vos (Jumbo-Visma) 

Earlier this year, Marianne Vos underwent major pelvic artery surgery to correct a long-standing injury. However, that didn’t stop Vos on her return to racing action earlier this week. In only her second race of the road season at Dwars door Vlaanderen, Vos was one of a select few who could compete with the SD Worx duo of Marlen Reusser and Vollering. When Vollering launched her final attack, Vos was the only rider who could match her, although her compatriot ultimately rode her off her wheel. Nevertheless, third place was a highly respectable result for Vos and an impressive sign of her fitness given her recent surgery and recovery. The Jumbo-Visma rider won the Tour of Flanders back in 2013, although she then didn’t return until five years later. With that said, and her form she showed this week, it feels like you certainly can’t count Vos out on Sunday.  

Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig (FDJ-Suez)

Earlier this week, Uttrup Ludwig showed she’s gradually building form ahead of the Ronde, putting in a big attack on the cobbles as part of the front group at Dwars door Vlaanderen. Ultimately, it would come to nothing, but proved that the FDJ Suez rider definitely has the legs to make a difference. In early March, the Danish puncheur took a solid third place behind the SD Worx duo of Vollering and Kopecky. She’s yet to win in 2023, but comes into the Tour of Flanders with a solid team behind her. Uttrup Ludwig has regularly been in contention in Flanders, finishing sixth last year. Her best placed finish was third in 2019. With the power of Grace Brown in support on Sunday, she could well hit the podium again this time around.

Annemiek van Vleuten (Movistar)

It seems inevitable that whatever race Annemiek van Vleuten signs on for, she’s then instantly considered a favourite for the win. Although with her absolute domination last year, it really is no surprise. Van Vleuten has won the Tour of Flanders on two previous occasions in 2011 and 2021, and has achieved four podium finishes in between her two victories. The Movistar rider had a difficult start to her current campaign, with an untimely mechanical ruling her out of contention. She made amends for her bad luck on Opening Weekend, going on to take fourth at Strade Bianche. Since that race, Van Vleuten has been out of the spotlight, training at altitude ahead of her wider goals later in the year. However, despite her absence from other races this spring her rivals certainly won't underestimate her. As she proved in 2022, Van Vleuten on her day is undoubtedly the best female bike racer in the world. If she turns up in her best shape on Sunday, it could well be game over the moment some of the trickier climbs begin.  

Lotte Kopecky (SD Worx)

The reigning Tour of Flanders female champion returns for another stab at victory. If Kopecky is able to muster up a race-winning performance on Sunday, she will become only the second woman to ever win consecutive editions. Unsurprisingly, the only rider to win two editions in a row is Movistar’s Van Vleuten. Kopecky is in lightning form, and has already won on the cobbles in 2023 at Omloop Het Nieuwsblad . As well as her win on Opening Weekend, she won Nokere Koerse and took second behind teammate Demi Vollering at Strade Bianche. The SD Worx rider has the power and tenacity to launch a move and make it stick on climbs like the Oude Kwaremont and Paterberg. Kopecky also possesses a powerful enough final turn of speed to win a reduced bunch sprint back in Oudenaarde. With that in mind, she’s our out-and-out favourite for the win.

Jonas Vingegaard’s Tour de France defence in doubt after Basque crash

The Tour de France champion, Jonas Vingegaard, was taken to hospital with a broken collarbone after a serious crash on stage four of the Itzulia Basque Country.

Vingegaard also suffered several broken ribs from the high-speed accident that also included Remco Evenepoel and Primoz Roglic among a group of 12 affected riders. “It was a nasty crash, but fortunately he is stable and conscious. He remains in hospital as a precaution. Thank you for all your messages,” Vingegaard’s team Visma-Lease a Bike said in a statement.

Six riders went to hospital after the incident, including the Australian Jay Vine, who was diagnosed with a fractured cervical vertebra and two fractures in his thoracic spine. “Fortunately, there were no neurological problems and there are no other serious injuries or skull injuries,” Vine’s UAE Team Emirates said in a statement.

Evenepoel’s team Soudal-QuickStep revealed the Belgian must undergo surgery on a fractured collarbone and fractured scapula. Roglic was the least affected of the big-name trio involved and he headed for the team car having received medical attention. The incident took place when the peloton was descending around a tight right-hand bend with less than 40km of the stage to go, one riding sliding out of the road and on to the bank, sparking a chain reaction as more followed.

The race was then neutralised until the finish, with only the six riders who had been at the front being allowed to sprint for the finish to try to win the stage, victory eventually going to the underwhelmed South African Louis Meintjes, who admitted it was a hollow triumph.

“It’s a sad day. I wish all the guys who crashed all the best and wish them a fast recovery,” Mattias Skjelmose, who took the overall race lead from Roglic, said at the finish. “My mind is with the guys who crashed, and right now I am not thinking about the leader’s jersey.”

Vingegaard won the Tour de France in 2022 and 2023 but with this year’s event starting on 29 June, doubt now hangs over his ability to defend his crown.

The Par 3 Contest at the Masters has been a Wednesday tradition dating back to 1960 with the inaugural competition won by Sam Snead. Tournament participants as well as all past champions are invited to play the nine-hole course designed by George Cobb and Cliff Roberts which is set around DeSoto Springs Pond and Ike's Pond. In the tournament's history, there have been 107 holes-in-one made, including a record nine in 2016. Five holes-in-one were made in 2023, including two by Seamus Power (Nos. 8 and 9). No Par 3 Contest winner has won the Masters the same year as his short-course victory.

Mathieu van der Poel versus the world. The World Champion is back after cleaning house in the Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix – but this time it's different in the Amstel Gold Race.

The Dutch one-day classic is Sunday, in the southern part of The Netherlands, in Maastricht. Instead of cobble crunching hard-men, Van der Poel will face a fresh crop of skinny climbers coming in from the Tour of the Basque Country and thirsty souls not only wanting to sip some Amstel, but have another round over the next week in Flèche Wallonne and Liège-Bastogne-Liège.

We are going to talk about the Dutch star of Team Alpecin-Deceuninck, go over all the favorites, the courses, and yes, the weather. And no, Tadej Pogacar is not back for more Amstel after his 2023 success.

The Amstel Gold Race 2024 Course

The Amstel Gold Race covers 253 kilometers, or about 157 miles, in the Limburg area and on the roads east of Maastricht, the home of Tom Dumoulin, characterized by short steep climbs and unrelenting road furniture.

Riders must be vigilant all day to navigate the numerous dividers, roundabouts, and climbs, avoiding danger.

The Cauberg is the party point for the Heineken-Amstel loving Dutch fans, like the Arenberg Forest in Paris-Roubaix or Oude Kwaremont in the Tour of Flanders. It used to finish the race, but now it features twice before a small circuit with the Bemelerberg climb at 6km out.

With the Cauberg and Bemelerberg final, the organizer created a race that requires sprint and strength, but also tactics. Of course in 2023, Pogacar did things his way, and launched 36km out.

Favorites For The Amstel Gold Race

Mathieu van der Poel comes into the 2024 Amstel Gold Race as the hands-down favorite after demolishing his rivals in the Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix. In Paris-Roubaix, it was a 59.7km solo attack.

He will need to once again rely heavily on his Alpecin-Deceuninck team to make sure he's protected to get within striking distance if he is to repeat his jaw-dropping 2019 victory.

The rest, though a level below, are seriously strong riders that will offer our world champion much more resistance than what he faced last week on the cobbles.

UAE Team Emirates brings a hit squad with Marc Hirschi, a former Flèche Wallonne winner, an in-form Brandon McNulty, João Almeida, and winner of the Basque Country Juan Ayuso.

Visma-Lease a Bike does not have 2021 winner Wout van Aert, who's still recovering from his Dwars door Vlaanderen crash and only just now showered for the first time in 12 days. It is bringing back Matteo Jorgenson, who recovered after a stellar Flanders ride and being sick, Tiesj Benoot, and Dylan Van Baarle.

Ineos - who like Visma could use some good luck – will pack a punch with Tom Pidcock. After going at it on the cobbles, he's truly in his element here, in tough and technical terrain. Michal Kwiatkowski, a two-time Amstel winner, will back him.

Bahrain with Matej Mohoric and Pello Bilbao. EF Education with last year's breakout rider, Ben Healy, Richard Carapaz and Marijn Van Den Berg. Lidl-Trek no longer relies on cobble star Mads Pedersen, but has Danish Champion and baller Mattias Skjelmose (Lidl-Trek).

Who am I leaving out? Benoît Cosnefroy (Decathlon-Ag2r La Mondiale), winner of Brabantse Pijl on Wednesday. Israel with Canadian Mike Woods, Dylan Teuns, Steven Williams, Corbin Strong. And Michael Matthews (Jayco-AlUla), who's looking to catch a break.

As you can see, Mathieu van der Poel is going to have a tough time to carry on with his winning streak. Backed by a strong Alpecin-Deceuninck team whose only weakness could be that double-denim kit. Let me know your thoughts.

On the women's side, it's the SD Worx show. Demi Vollering back to defend. Lotte Kopecky on the heels of her Paris-Roubaix win in the rainbow jersey. And Lorena Wiebes who won recently in Scheldeprijs. A team stacked with talent.

Look for attacks on SD Worx's fortress from Katarzyna Niewiadoma, Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig, and Silvia Persico.

A Beautiful Day In Maastricht

It's a perfect day to ride your bike on Sunday. For the Amstel Gold Race 2024, expect temperatures from 7 to 14°C or 44 to 58°F. Not much in the way of wind is forecasted, with only clouds spoiling the show.
