Isla Roatan is a major cruise port (locode HNRTB) in the Southern Caribbean, located approx 65 km (40 mi) off the northern coast of mainland Honduras (North America). Roatan Island is the most popular among all Bay Islands. It has length 53 km (33 mi), width 7 km (4 mi), total land area approx 83 km2 (32 mi2) and population around 45,000. Roatan's largest town is Coxen Hole (population around 5,000).

Isla Roatan has two cruise ports each used by different cruise companies.

Port Mahogany Bay is an exclusive facility serving vessels from the fleets of Carnival Corporation -owned companies - like Carnival Cruise Line and Princess Cruises .

Port Coxen Hole serves all other vessels including the fleets of NCLH-Norwegian , RCG-Royal Caribbean , MSC , Virgin Voyages .

The island is located close to the Caribbean's largest barrier reef (also ranked the world's 2nd largest) - the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef.

Roatan is Honduras' main cruise ship, scuba diving and eco-tourism travel destination. The island's economy is heavily based on tourism, followed by commercial fishing.

Isla Roatan is served by Juan Manuel Galvez Airport (international and domestic flights) and by the Galaxy Wave ferry (460-passenger fast catamaran offering twice-a-day service to La Ceiba). Roatan Airport connects to mainland Honduras (La Ceiba, San Pedro Sula), Costa Rica (San Jose), Panama City , Belize City , Grand Cayman , Canada ( Quebec City , Montreal , Toronto ), USA ( Miami , Houston , Atlanta), Guatemala (San Salvador, Guatemala City). Charter flights link to St Lucia, Italy ( Milano ), Cuba ( Havana ).

The island is popular for its beaches (West End, Camp Bay), crystal water, all-year sunny weather, clear blue skies. Discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1502, Roatan was famous for housing over 5,000 buccaneers (pirates), the most popular of whom were Captain John Coxen and Sir Henry Morgan.

Roatan Marine Park is a community-based, non-profit organization, established in 2005 by local businesses and dive operators to protect the surrounding coral reefs. Roatan Institute for Marine Sciences (RIMS) was founded in 1989 to preserve the island's natural resources through research and education. RIMS is in Sandy Bay and features over 50 km (30 mi) of barrier reefs, mangroves and seagrass beds. All reef systems throughout Bay Islands are protected by the government and helped by charitable donations.

Little French Key

Little French Key is a privately-owned island, located in French Harbor (on Roatan's southern shore). This island resort is also the most booked tour in Roatan and offered as both daily cruise excursion and overnight (Bed and Breakfast) deals. Island's amenities include horseback riding, snorkeling, zip-lining, jet-skiing, paddle-boarding, sea kayaking, massages, dining.

The island is best known for its private sanctuary "Animal Rescue Center" and its great collection of exotic animals, most of which were previously abused in zoos and circuses.

The island has several white-sand beaches, bars (including a swim-up bar), 3 restaurants (of which 2 on the water and 1 on the beach), 2 Jump platforms. Transportation to and from Little French Key is via tour boats. Travel time is 10 min (departures from Mahogany Bay) and 35 min (from Coxen Hole).

• Package prices range from $59 (Discovery) to $88 (Full Island), $98 (Full Island Mayatlantis), $108 (Full Island Plus), up to $198 (VIP Package). Combo packages are also offered - Zipline plus Full Island ($148) and One Tank Scuba Dive plus Full Island ($168).
• Cheapest tour deals cost $25 pp (each) - guided snorkelling, seakayak for the day, horseback swimming.

Unfortunately, on August 26, 2018, the resort was completely destroyed by fire, causing over USD 3 million in damages. According to the owner Moshe Lahijani, the fire was most likely arson. All animals (except 2 parrots and 1 rabbit) were rescued and housed in temporary shelters.

Roatan Island cruise terminal

Roatan as cruise port has 2 passenger terminals – Mahogany Bay and Coxen Hole, the bigger and newest of which is Mahogany Bay.

Mahogany Bay cruise terminal

Mahogany Bay is a Carnival Corporation -managed (exclusive) cruise terminal that serves ships from the fleets of Carnival Cruise Line and Princess Cruises . Mahogany Bay terminal is located east of Roatan Airport, in an area fka Dixon Bay. This is Roatan's new cruise ship terminal (inaugurated in 2009) that spreads over 20 acres (0,03 mi2 / 0,08 km2) of land. The project's cost (including the terminal building) was USD 62 million.

Mahogany Bay cruise terminal can accommodate 2 large vessels (post-Panamax sized) simultaneously. The passenger area has capacity for 8000 people.

A special attraction at Mahogany Bay Terminal is the chair-lift system. It transports passengers from the terminal building directly to Mahogany Beach. The lift's all-day pass costs USD 12.

Just off the cruise ship pier, there is a shopping mall with ATM, rent-a-car offices, kiosks providing information for Roatan Island tours (shore excursions), restaurants, souvenirs, jewelry shops and live musical performances.

Coxen Hole cruise terminal

It serves ships from the fleets of NCLH-Norwegian , RCG-Royal Caribbean , MSC , and Virgin Voyages . Coxen Hole is the capital of Bay Islands and their largest city. The port is named after Captain John Coxon / Coxen - a famous late-17th century buccaneer (British pirate). This is the first (smaller) Roatan cruise port. As passenger facilities, it offers ATM, Internet, restaurants, small shopping mall.

The cruise port is located west from the airport. The town offers hand-made local souvenirs and authentic cuisine.

• Beaches: the most popular are Half Moon Bay, West Bay and West End.
• Coxen Hole: the capital offers duty free shops for tourists.

• Carambola Botanical Gardens and Trails: located on Roatan’s north side, spreads over 40-acre area.
• Roatan Dolphin Encounters: you have the opportunity to see, swim, dive or snorkel with dolphins. Located at Anthony’s Key Resort in the Roatan Institute of Marine Science.

Essential guide to Mahogany Bay and Coxen Hole cruise terminals in Roatán (Honduras): where cruise ships dock, all services, and amenities at the cruise terminals.

Most cruisers do not realize that there are two distinct ports and terminals in Roatán. Frequent cruisers that have called at Roatán with the same cruise line may believe that the port where a specific cruise line docks is the only one in Roatán.

Where Ships Dock in Roatán

However, different cruise liens dock in two distinct ports. Carnival Corporation cruise ships dock at Mahogany Bay whilst ships from all other cruise lines dock at Port of Roatán Town Center (aka Coxen Hole).

Mahogany Bay Cruise Center

The largest of the two ports in Roatán is the Mahogany Bay Cruise Center , located on the southwest coast of the island and owned by Carnival corporation. Obviously, this is the docking port (and Terminal) for Carnival ships but also for Princess, Holland & America, and all other cruise lines belonging to this corporation.

The Mahogany Bay Cruise Center has two berths where two mega ships can dock. The piers and terminal can get busy and crowded at times with over 8,000 passengers and crew.

The Mahogany Bay Terminal

The two piers of Mahogany Bay share the same exit before entering a wide walkway that leads to a vast 20 acre welcome center/terminal. Once passed a couple of stores on both sides of the walkway, you will be on large square opening into the left.

Here you will find every single service and amenity the cruise traveler many need: Restrooms, ATM, Phones, the inevitable duty-free shops with the ubiquitous brands found in the Caribbean, Grills, Bars, Restaurants and a craft market. At the end of this elongated square, you will also find an information booth, car rentals, the shore excursions hub and a taxi stand.

To the right side of the exiting walkway, it is impossible to miss the Magical Flying Beach Chair. This chairlift service transports guests from the main plaza directly to white sand of Mahogany Beach - the all day pass costs $14 USD. If you prefer, there is a shaded path to Mahogany Beach which is around 15 minutes walk away.

Mahogany Beach

The top attraction of Mahogany Bay Cruise Center is the beach. In fact, this is more like a private island run by Carnival Corporation and, in a way, is just an extension of your cruise ship. This 10-acre area with its over 800-foot-long beach is dotted with water-sports, beach activities, beach bars and grills.

For those looking for a more secluded day at the beach, the Blue Lagoon has personal beach bed cabanas on a private beach.

Port of Roatán Town Center - Coxen Hole

If you are calling at Roatán on ships of cruise lines such as Royal Caribbean, NCL, MSC, Oceania, Regent or Viking (among others) you will be docking at the Port of Roatán Town Center frequently referred to as Coxen Hole - the name of the largest city on the island of Roatán just a few minutes walk away. What's at the Coxen Hole Cruise Terminal

This port and Terminal is much smaller than Mahogany Bay, only has one pier perpendicular to the coast and the exit gates open directly into a nice but smaller plaza. But the terminal also has all basics services like Restrooms, Car Rental, Pharmacy, ATM, Internet, an Information Booth, and Taxi Stand.

This terminal only has a few duty-free stores and gift shops. The shore excursion bus hub is on the right side of the terminal. On the left side, you will find the the taxi dispatch and the exist to the main street leading to Coxen Hole. Although within walking distance, there isn't much to see in this small town.

Cruise lines visiting the Mahogany Bay Cruise Ship Port include: Carnival Cruise Line, Princess Cruise Line, Holland America Cruise Line, Costa Cruise Line, P&O Cruise Line, etc.. The Mahogany Bay Cruise Center allows for two docked cruise ships at a time and up to 8,000 passengers. This port of call is diverse in services and offers a variety of bars, restaurants, and shops to enjoy during your stay.

Currency/Credit Card/ATM

Most U.S. Cruisers will be happy to know that U.S. Dollars are widely used on Roatan. There are several ATM machines to withdraw funds at the Mahogany Bay Cruise Center. However, it is best to use your credit cards for purchases, unless you run across a vendor outside the port where you will be required to pay in U.S. Dollars or Lempira, the currency of Honduras. Change from a transaction will probably be in U.S. Dollars at this port of call and cash advances, including travelers checks, are available at several of the banks on the island. IMPORTANT ! Remember to notify your bank/credit card company before leaving your place of origin.

Internet & Wifi Access

As technology advances, more wireless carriers from North America and Europe provide cellular phone coverage for tourists in Central America. Most traveler related businesses on Roatan provide internet access complimentary or with a purchase of some sort. There are also several internet cafes along the Main Street in Coxen Hole, but I would look for internet access near your place of interest. For example, JavaVine Cafe & Wine Bar is a good choice in West Bay and Sundowners Bar in West End. Local mobile cellular providers for the island and Honduras are Claro and Tigo, with Tigo Cellular having a better signal throughout the island.

Mahogany Bay Cruise Excursions & Tours

Roatan is your premiere destination for western Caribbean excursions and tours. No other destination can claim to such diversity, and this is largely due to the island's landscape and eco-system. There are numerous things to do in Roatan, from diving to sightseeing, the options are endless. Furthermore, the Mahogany Bay Cruise Center does not offer excursions or tours for last minute purchases on location. There are no local tour operator kiosks in the welcome center and all independent tour operator pickups take place at an exterior location from the cruise center. Thus, it's best to book your excursions in advance with the cruise line or an independent Roatan tour operator. Book Today!

Mahogany Beach

Adjacent to the cruise port welcome center is a 10 acre island where Mahogany Beach stretches for over 800 feet. Complimentary beach chairs and mats are available to island guests at this port of call. Non-motorized water-sport equipment is available for rent and a volleyball court for your enjoyment. Please check with your cruise line in advance for details.

Magical Chairlift

The magical chairlift is a convenient way for cruise ship guests to travel (5 minute ride) between the cruise center and Mahogany Beach. The all-day pass costs $14 for adults, and $8 for children ages 4 to 12. Children ages 3 & under are free. There is a 32 inches minimum height requirement and a 600lb weight maximum per chairlift. Please contact the cruise line for more information.

Mahogany Beach offers 8 exclusive beachfront cabanas for rent during your visit to Roatan. Each air-conditioned cabana accommodates up to 4 island guests and includes 4 chairlift tickets. Features per cabana include; lounge chairs, hammock, beach furnishings, floats, wifi, and waiter service. Please contact the cruise line for reservations.

A Carnival cruise ship rescued 27 Cuban nationals found adrift and signalling for help roughly 20 miles west of Cuba this weekend. 

The small wooden boat was in visibly poor condition, fitted with a makeshift sail and crowded with passengers, video shared with Fox 13 shows. 

The cruise ship's bridge team turned around the Carnival Paradise on its route from Tampa to Roatan, Honduras to rescue the Cubans around 2:30 pm. Sunday.

All 27 passengers were taken aboard, fed and checked by medical personnel, the outlet reported. 

Roatan officials and the U.S. Coast Guard Sector Key West were notified. Neither the Coast Guard sector nor Carnival Cruise Line could immediately be reached for comment.

The ship's itinerary was not impacted, the liner wrote in a press release, and cruise-goers will reach Roatan's Mahogany Bay today on schedule. Before returning to port in Tampa on April 25, the ship is scheduled to stop in Cozumel, Mexico on April 23.

This wasn't the first rescue carried out by the more than 70,000 ton ship, Travel and Tour World reported. A sailor was saved by the liner's crew in 2019, and 20 stranded individuals were taken onto the ship in two separate 2022 incidents near Cuba , the outlet reported.

Delta adds 4 routes to largest-ever Latin America schedule

Delta Air Lines is seemingly convinced that it's going to be a cold and dreary winter.

The Atlanta-based carrier unveiled yet another expansion to warm-weather destinations for the winter season. This includes two brand-new routes, as well as two route resumptions. All of the added flights will operate once weekly on Saturdays, a carrier spokesperson confirmed to TPG.

In terms of new routes, the airline will add service from Detroit to Providenciales in Turks and Caicos and from Boston to Liberia, Costa Rica.

The new Turks and Caicos connection begins Dec. 21, just in time for the peak winter holidays. Providenciales will become Delta's fourth Caribbean destination from Detroit, Cirium schedules show, joining existing service to Montego Bay, Jamaica; Punta Cana, Dominican Republic; and San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Delta's new Boston-to-Liberia flight takes off Jan. 11 and will give travelers access to Costa Rica's Guanacaste province, which is popular with tourists looking to explore the country's natural beauty.

Delta will also resume service from New York to Antigua and St. Kitts on Jan. 11. These flights haven't operated since 2021 and 2020, respectively, Cirium schedules show.

All of these new and resuming routes join Delta's previously announced expansions in Latin America for the upcoming winter season. Earlier this year, the airline added four new destinations in the region , all taking off in the coming months. These new destinations include Bridgetown, Barbados; Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic; and Mazatlan and Tulum, Mexico.

Furthermore, over the weekend, Delta will also load daily flights from Atlanta to Cartagena, Colombia, up from the existing three-times-weekly schedule that's currently being sold in this market. Delta's other recent frequency increases to Latin America are already available for sale on its website and are listed below based on peak-winter timetables.

• Santiago, Chile, from daily to twice daily
• Buenos Aires, Argentina, from daily to twice daily
• Cartagena, Colombia, from thrice weekly to daily
• Antigua, from Saturday only to daily
• Bonaire, from twice weekly to daily
• Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands, from 10 times weekly to twice daily
• Guatemala, from daily to twice daily
• Providenciales, Turks and Caicos, from eight times weekly to twice daily
• Roatan, Honduras, from Saturday only to daily
• San Juan, Puerto Rico, from five times daily to six times daily

From Boston and Detroit:

• San Juan, from once daily to twice daily

From Los Angeles:

• San Jose del Cabo, Mexico, from eight times weekly to twice daily

All of these additions build upon Delta's recent growth in Latin America compared to last winter, which already saw a roughly 20% capacity increase compared to 2022, Cirium schedules show. This winter, Delta plans another 5% boost in capacity, making this the largest-ever schedule the airline has offered to the region.
