Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary – A Detailed Travel Guide

A hidden gem of Assam, Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the closest wilderness areas to Guwahati city. The Sanctuary is relatively unexplored, compared to some of the well-known wildlife destinations of the state.

I happened to discover Pobitora during my Guwahati trip. It wasn’t part of our itinerary unless a local shop owner from Guwahati enlightened us about this sanctuary during a casual chat.

Nestled on the bank of the river Brahmaputra in Morigaon district, Pobitora is a quick drive from Guwahati. It was originally maintained as a grazing reserve for the Nagaon district.

Recognizing a sizable presence of one-horned rhinos in this area, Pobitora was established as a wildlife sanctuary in 1987. The sanctuary is spread over 38.8 sq km and shares its boundary with 27 neighbouring villages.

This program is a joint effort by the Government of Assam and the Ministry of Environment and Forests in partnership with some of the renowned international NGOs.

To realize the vision of this program, the sanctuary is successfully driving the rhino breeding initiative. Some of the rhinos were also translocated from Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary to Manas National Park as part of IRV 2020.

The grassland vegetation of the sanctuary provides an excellent habitat to the one-horned rhinoceros. Water buffalos are the second most widely sighted animal in the sanctuary after rhinos.

You may also spot golden jackal and wild boar but they are mainly found near the hilly terrains.

Jeep safari and elephant safari are the two major activities for tourists at the Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary. Elephant ride is for an hour and jeep safari usually lasts between 1.5-2 hours traversing different parts of the forest.

Assam's Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary: Essential Travel Guide

Rhino Sightings Aplenty at Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary

BIJU BORO/AFP/Getty Images

One of the best opportunities you’ll have of seeing a one-horned rhinoceros in India is by visiting Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary. With the highest concentration of them in the country, it’s unlikely that you’ll miss the chance to see these rare giants in the wild. At only 38 square kilometers in size, most of the park can be seen in a short visit.

Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary is situated in the state of Assam in North East India , and is bounded by the Garagal Beel pond and the mighty Brahmaputra River. It's just 40 kilometers from Guwahati, 40 kilometers from Morigaon town and 270 kilometers from Jorhat. The park's proximity to Guwahati makes it a popular day-trip or weekend visit.

Pobitora is accessible by road 35 kilometers from Jagiroad off National Highway 37. The park is located just off the main road. It’s a tiny town so the park entrance is hard to miss.

Getting There

Guwahati is well serviced by its airport that has flights from all over India, or alternatively you can fly into Jorhat from Kolkata or Shillong. From Guwahati, it’s only about an hour’s drive to Pobitora in a private taxi.

We traveled by private taxi that was organized by tour company Kipepeo at a cost of 2,000 rupees per day for a small vehicle. The nearest railway station is Jagiroad, which is about an hour and a half away from Pobitora.

There are many trains a day that stop there from Guwahati, as it’s a big stop on the well-traversed route across Assam. Local buses also stop near Pobitora on their way from Jagiroad and Morigaon.

When to Visit

Like most national parks in India, Pobitora is shut during the monsoon season. It closes at the end of April or mid May, depending on the weather, and re-opens at the beginning of October. Unfortunately, devastating widespread monsoon flooding in 2019 has delayed the reopening of the park probably until November.

Pobitora is a relatively quiet park, so it’s good to visit any time, although perhaps best avoid the Guwahati day-trippers on weekends and holidays. They go there for picnics rather than to spot animals and can be very disruptive.

From November to February, the weather can be a bit chilly in the evenings but the sun usually comes out during the day. After April, the rising temperatures make it rather uncomfortable. The bright yellow mustard fields in full bloom during December and January are picturesque.

What to See

The latest census, conducted in March 2018, found 102 rhinos living in Pobitora. Sometimes, it's possible to see 30 or 40 of them on a single safari!

The waterside location also makes the park an ornithologist’s treat, with over 86 species of birds present. Some are migratory birds, while others are local residents like the Grey-hooded Warbler and the White-vented Myna. Some species close to extinction also frequent Pobitora including Nordmann’s Greenshank and the Greater Adjutant.

How to Visit

One-hour jeep and elephant safaris are conducted inside the park. Both elephants and jeeps are used for the safaris. Many tourists prefer to go on an elephant safari because it enables them to get closer to the rhinos. However, others believe it's cruel to ride elephants and choose a jeep safari instead. Jeep safaris follow the road and tend to be dusty.

The elephant safaris take place in the morning at 6.30 a.m. and 7.30 a.m. The first jeep safari departs at 7 a.m., and the safaris keep running until 3 p.m. except for lunch between noon and 1 p.m.

It's not necessary to book safaris in advance. You'll find jeeps and drivers waiting near the entrance gate. However, when the park is busy on weekends and holidays, it's a good idea to arrive early before it opens. If you're concerned about availability of elephant safaris, contact the Range Officer for assistance on 03678-248157. It's also possible to book elephant safaris through local tour operators and hotels at a higher price. Here is one option.

Fees and Charges

There are separate entrance fees and safari fees at Pobitora, and the rates differ for Indians and foreigners. The entrance fee is 50 rupees per person for Indians and 500 rupees per person for foreigners. The rate for jeep safaris is 1,300 rupees for up to six people, including the cost of toll, guide and security. Elephant safaris are 500 per person for Indians and 1,000 per person for foreigners. There are extra charges for still and video cameras, with prices starting at 50 rupees (for still cameras).

Solo travelers can try their luck joining a group to reduce the jeep safari price.

It's possible to spend the whole day inside the park, from sunrise until sunset. The cost is 200 rupees for Indians and 2,000 rupees for foreigners.

Travel Tips

Rhinos can be seen without even entering the park, albeit from a distance. Just go past the turnoff to the park and drive through the town and over the bridge. You’ll be surrounding by rice paddies, and in the distance to your left you may just see a rhino or five. We saw a few here although the chance of seeing one at close range is much more likely within the actual park.

Where to Stay

There aren’t too many options for accommodations in Pobitora, with only a few places to choose from.

The best one is the outstanding new Zizina Otis Resort with luxury air-conditioned tents and mud cottages from about 5,000 rupees per night. It's conveniently situated right near the entrance gate and has a good relationship with the forest department. Safari bookings are arranged.

We stayed at the Arya Eco Resort , and were the only people occupying one of their four rooms. Don’t let the name fool you though, there’s not much “Eco” about the “Resort”, from the faux log cabins to the male staff standing around watching our every move but offering little in the way of service. Less than 100 meters away from the entrance of the park, it’s functional though, albeit a bit pricey at 3,000 rupees per room.

Decent budget accommodations can be found across the road at Maibong Resort . It’s a larger complex and a bit older, with cottages starting from 1,800 rupees a night.

Should You Visit Kaziranga or Pobitora?

Are you short on time, most interested rhinos, don't want to travel too far, prefer to avoid the crowds, and don't mind less facilities? Definitely consider Pobitora as opposed to the larger and more famous Kaziranga National Park . Not only is it much more convenient to visit, it's cheaper and the elephant safaris will take you close to the rhinos.

The drawbacks at Pobitora are that the safaris aren't as long and there aren't as many other animals to spot. However, the rhinos will be enough if that's mainly what you want to see!

One Horn Rhino Safari on an Elephant

The overall experience was breathtaking! I feel lucky to have seen the one horned Rhino while riding an elephant! Yes you heard me right, Pobitora has 2 options for safari, on-board a jeep or birds eye view on the elephant and I pick the second option. This shall always be a memorable experience and one I shall talk about with anyone I meet.

Being a sanctuary to protect Rhinos, sure to see 5/6 Rhinos in a hour long safari- chances of seeing more is in early hours before 9/10am. You can find wild buffaloes here and there. And then 80% filled with cattles from near by villages . You can see all of them grazing together. pobitora wildlife sanctuary elephant safari

It’s a sanctuary created specifically to settle rhinos in a safe place. It’s not a jungle. So, unlike a jungle safari where sighting a big animal is chancey…here, you will certainly see rhinos. But having been to a number of well organised jungle safaris in S.India & W. India, a safari at Pobitora wasn’t as thrilling. However, It’s indeed a beautiful place and has a lot of water bodies within the sanctuary. The early morning safari was magical..with the fog, rising sun and the stillness of the place. apart from the rhinos..Pobitora has hundreds of migratory birds, wild boar and surprisingly many many cattle. It had been a dream to see a rhino in its natural habitat, and I could check that off my list. There are over a 100 rhinos in there and they look magnificent. Loved the experience overall. Organising a safari wasn’t difficult. We booked directly with the forest / tourism dept but your hotel could book this for you as well. The jeeps were old but worked well, and the accompanying armed security personnel (anti-poaching) in the jeeps gives one some sense of safety overall. We did 1 elephant safari as well. The elephant safari wasn’t very exciting or comfortable. I wouldn’t do that again for a number of reasons (incl the issue of how the animals are treated).

Pobitora is a wildlife sanctuary, situated about 90 minutes away from Guwahati. We had a pleasant drive there yesterday. The roads are narrow but good. After exiting Guwahati, the scenery is quite pleasant and actually reminded me of Kerala. Apparently one can get to see a lot of rhinos but we got there a bit late and couldn’t go on any of the (jeep/elephant/boat) safaris … which is a good thing in these times I guess :)

When compared to Kaziranga this is a small national park situated close to Guwahati. Lot of resorts are located close by where you can stay, morning trip is advisable when you can go for elephant safari or in afternoon for Jeep Safari. Since area is small the density of animals are more and change of sighting is more. Overall good place to visit

We did a short trip to Pobitora and were amazed to spot so many rhinos! (See pic). The government should however improve the road to the sanctuary. The sanctuary has pristine jungle and we took a jeep safari. Went through quite a thick foliage and came across rhinos, deer and lots of cows too! If you plan to stay overnight, I suggest you stay at Zizini which has a very good kitchen, air-conditioned tents and rooms.

Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary

This small wildlife sanctuary has a thriving population of some 130 one-horned rhinoceroses, plus around 2000 wild water buffalo and almost 2000 resident and migratory bird species. About 40km northeast of Guwahati, it makes for a good day-trip (cabs cost ₹3000 to ₹4000 round-trip). Visits are by one-hour jeep safari or early-morning elephant ride. We don't recommend the latter because of the harm that this can cause to the elephants.

The sanctuary closes to visitors during the monsoon: exact closing and opening dates vary from year to year.

On my third endeavor to catch a glimpse of a one-horned rhino in the wild, anticipation ran high. Having visited Chitwan National Park in Nepal long ago, my luck had not favored me with a single rhino sighting. The excitement soared last December when I was chosen as one of the Bodoland Ambassadors for 2019. Beyond the thrill of exploring the pristine Bodoland, my enthusiasm peaked knowing that the itinerary included visits to Manas National Park and Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary.

Covering approximately 38 square kilometres, Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary boasts a sprawling grassland terrain that facilitates seamless wildlife observation. Often referred to as the ‘Mini-Kaziranga,’ the sanctuary earned its designation as a reserve forest in 1971 and was later declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1987.

Renowned for its remarkable concentration of one-horned Indian Rhinoceros, Pobitora is home to an estimated 102 rhinos, as per the 2018 survey. This impressive ratio of rhino population to sanctuary size ensures that encountering these majestic creatures is a nearly guaranteed experience for visitors.

Beyond its iconic rhinos, Pobitora is a haven for avian enthusiasts, earning the moniker ‘Bharatpur of the East’ due to its diverse bird species. The sanctuary’s rich biodiversity extends to various birdlife, enhancing the wildlife experience.

Whether marveling at the one-horned giants or immersing oneself in the vibrant avian tapestry, Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary promises an unforgettable exploration of nature’s wonders in the heart of Assam.

How to Get to Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary?

Situated along the banks of the Brahmaputra River in the Morigaon district of Assam, India, the wildlife sanctuary lies approximately 48 kilometres from the state’s capital city, Guwahati. Easily accessible by road, the sanctuary is a mere one to two-hour drive from Guwahati. Wildlife in Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary

As previously mentioned, Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary is the habitat of the one-horned Indian Rhinoceros. The sanctuary actively participates in the Rhino breeding program initiated by the Indian Government, recognized as “Indian Rhino Vision 2020.” Interested individuals can refer to the rhinos.org website for additional information about the program.

An essential experience during a visit to Pobitora is the opportunity to observe the wild rhinos in their natural habitat.

Hosting over 400 bird species, both resident and migratory, Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary is a haven for avian enthusiasts. Particularly during winters, the sanctuary welcomes over 2000 migratory birds, amplifying its allure as a dream destination for bird lovers and photographers alike.

The optimal time to visit the sanctuary is during the winter season, from November to February. The weather is pleasant during these months, providing an ideal environment to observe the diverse bird species that inhabit the area.

Is Pobitora Safe for Solo Travelers and Tourists?

As a solo female traveler, safety is my foremost concern during journeys. I was pleasantly surprised when I approached my travels in Assam with the same caution as in my previous experiences. Throughout my 10-day exploration of Bodoland and various parts of Assam, I realized that safety was not a significant worry in this region. The locals are incredibly welcoming, and even in the remote areas, a sense of security prevails. It is reassuring to confirm that traveling to and within Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary is safe.

However, a word of caution: be mindful of the rhinos, especially during the night, as they may occasionally venture beyond the sanctuary boundaries.

Closing Notes

I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary. The one-hour jeep safari provided close encounters with at least 4 to 5 rhinos, making it a must-visit for wildlife enthusiasts. I wholeheartedly recommend Pobitora, assuring you won’t be disappointed! Whether a wildlife lover or a bird watcher, this sanctuary deserves a spot on your must-visit list.

The Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary is situated in the Assamese district of Morigaon, 50 kilometers to the east of Guwahati. This sanctuary, which spans more than 38 kilometers, is distinctive due to the large number of rhinos that are protected there. The two other significant reserves for the preservation of Indian rhinos are Manas Wildlife Sanctuary and Kaziranga National Park. Pobitara is one of these reserves. Its marshy swamplands provide the ideal habitat for wild buffalo, rhinos, and boars alike. Jeep safaris navigate through the rough roads that have been specially built for this purpose. With 200 migratory birds, 81 rhinos, and some interesting reptiles, this Sanctuary is a must-visit on any wildlife enthusiast’s bucket list. The sanctuary offers both jeep safaris and elephant safaris.

Legend has it that the Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary is named after the late teenage daughter of King of Mayong. The sanctuary was once only a forest with a lot of rhinos living in it; in 1971, it was turned into a reserve forest to protect the rhinos. It later attained the designation of a wildlife refuge in 1987. Given the necessity to safeguard the Indian rhinoceros, it was a crucial choice. There are 81 Indian Rhinoceros to roaming freely as of a 2006 census, and Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary serves as their safe refuge. A visit to the Sanctuary almost assures sightings of the Indian Rhinoceros. Because of the ever-increasing density, some of them also end up being translocated to Manas National Park, for better caregiving.

Apart from rhinos- the Park’s prime attraction, the park also inhabits Asiatic buffalos, wild bears, leopards, etc. While the wildlife alone is extremely interesting to observe, you’re in for a lot more when you visit the Sanctuary. It is also an ideal tourist spot for bird-watching. With more than 2000 migratory birds, the place is heaven-sent for birders. You’ll find many residents as well as migratory birds such as the Indian pied Hornbill, Osprey, Hill Myna, Kalij Pheasant, etc.

The Pobitora National Park, known as the “Bharatpur of the East” for its enviably diverse wildlife, is home to reptiles such as the Indian Python, common Monitor Lizard, Indian Tent Turtle, and the Indian Cobra. Any ornithologist would be happy to see the birds here because there are so many because of the location beside the water. The Pobitora National Park is a popular destination for birders from all over the world thanks to its combined population of more than 86 species of resident and migratory birds, including the Grey Hooded Warbler and the White-vented Myna. Almost extinct bird species like the Greater Adjutant and Nordmann’s Greenshank are also protected by it.

Enjoy the jeep safaris or ride on an elephant to explore the park. Either way, you’re going to have loads of fun. But if you choose to go on the elephant safari, there are more chances of you being able to get closer to the Indian Rhinoceros. If you’re uncomfortable with the idea of an elephant safari, the jeep safaris await you.

Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary History

On September 20, 1957, the government declared the adjacent Rajamayong Hill as Raja Mayang Hill Reserve Forest covering a 1191.86-hectare reserve area vide Govt. Notification no. AFS 427/54/11 Dt. September 20, 1957.

The study also considered unpublished records regarding the presence of rhinos in the Pobitora area. Historical documents provide evidence of the existence of rhinos in the Pobitora and Mayong areas dating back to 1925. According to records within the Forest Department, there were approximately fourteen rhinos existence mentioned in Pobitora during the period of 1961-62.

On November 18, 1971, the government of Assam declared 1584.76 hectares (15.84 sq. km) of reserved area (RF) as Pobitora Reserve Forest vide Notification no. 4 / Settlement / 542/54 Dt. November 18, 1971.

In 1981, following the successful outcomes observed in Kaziranga and Orang National Parks, scientific grassland management practices were implemented in Pobitora Reserved Forest. This strategic approach led to a significant rise in the rhino population within Pobitora ultimately earning global recognition as an area with the highest density of the Great one-horned rhino on the world’s wildlife map.

In view of the consistent growth in the rhino population, the area was subsequently designated and declared as the Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary on July 16, 1987 vide Notification FWR / 19/87/990 Dt. 16 July 1987.

The notification issued on July 16, 1987 included all the areas previously notified in 1957 and 1971.

The final notification of the sanctuary was officially published by the government under Notification No. FRS / 19/87/153 DT in the Assam Gazette on March 17, 1998, and subsequently on May 13, 1998 which included the incorporation of additional Khas land within the periphery of the sanctuary. These areas include Murkata I & II with 336.00 hectares, Deeping with 40.00 hectares, Thingabhanga with 176 hectares, and Kamarpur/Rajamayong Courtier Khas land with an area of 552 hectares. Altogether, these areas contributed to a total coverage of 3880.62 hectares (38.85 sq. km) as specified in the notification.

Challenges of the Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary

The Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary encounters several challenges. Land encroachment is a major issue as the sanctuary’s boundaries are not clearly defined, leading to encroachment by nearby villages. This diminishes the sanctuary’s area and drives animals to stray, making them vulnerable to human threats.

Annual floods caused by the Brahmaputra and Kolong rivers disrupt the sanctuary, displacing wildlife and causing food shortages. Domestic cattle from neighboring villages also pose a significant problem, competing with wildlife for limited resources. This forces animals to venture outside the sanctuary, putting them at risk of harm.

Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary is dealing with the overpopulation of rhinos causing animals to venture out in search of food and increasing the risk of conflicts with humans. There is also a concern about disease transmission between straying animals and domestic animals.

Translocation of Rhino from Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary

With the collaboration of the Department of Environment & Forests, the Government of Assam, the International Rhino Foundation, WWF-India and the US Fish & Wildlife Service, facilitated the translocation of rhinos from Pobitora to Manas National Park Under the Indian Rhino Vision 2020 (IRV 2020) program. A total of Eight rhinos were translocated from Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary to Manas National Park , six rhinos between December 2010 and January 2011 and two in 2008.

This collaborative effort aims to reduce pressure on Pobitora and minimize disease transmission between wildlife and domestic animals.

Please note that the data for the year 2018 only provides the total count of rhinos without specific age and gender breakdown.

The attack at Kafue national park, in which the large pachyderm ran from a wooded area and barreled into the side of the truck, was captured on video and posted to social media by ABC News. It identified the tourist as 79-year-old Gail Mattson of Minnesota.

Keith Vincent, executive director of the safari operator Wilderness, told the network in a statement that the elephant’s charge was unexpected, and the driver had no opportunity to escape.

“Our guides are all extremely well trained and experienced, but sadly in this instance the terrain and vegetation was such that the guide’s route became blocked and he could not move the vehicle out of harm’s way quickly enough,” he said .

“This is a tragic event and we extend our deepest condolences to the family of the guest who died. We are also, naturally, supporting those guests and the guide involved in this distressing incident.”

Wildlife officials and local police say they are investigating Saturday’s incident, which took place in the national park about 220 miles north-west of Zambia’s capital, Lusaka. Covering almost 8,700 square miles, Kafue is the country’s oldest and largest national park, and is popular with tourists for its abundance and variety of birds and animals.

Wilderness said four other guests in the vehicle were treated for minor injuries.

Family members of Mattson, who also had a home in Arizona, told Minnesota’s KSTP News that she was “living life” on the game-watching holiday. Photographs of her in a safari truck clutching a flower, taken on the day of her death, accompanied the network’s report.

John Longabauth, a friend from Arizona, told the outlet he would miss her adventurous spirit. “She had told us that this safari was going to be her last big adventure,” he said. “Because her birthday is in the summer, she was going to be 80, she felt like she would start slowing down.”

Zambia’s neighbor Zimbabwe has expressed recent concern at a growing conflict between humans and elephants from a rising elephant population, especially one that is migrating more as the climate crisis disrupts animals’ access to food, water and cover, in Africa and around the world.

Elderly American tourist killed in elephant attack while on safari in Zambia

The tourist died after the attack at Kafue National Park.

An elderly American tourist was killed after an "aggressive" bull elephant attacked a vehicle during a game drive in Zambia, the safari operator said.

The incident took place Saturday morning at Kafue National Park, a Lusaka Police spokesperson confirmed to ABC News. Gail Mattson, 79, was confirmed by the family as the victim.

"An aggressive bull elephant charged the vehicle carrying six guests and a guide who were on a game drive from Lufupa Camp," Wilderness, the company operating the safari, said in a statement to ABC News Wednesday.

Four other people received treatment for minor injuries after the incident, the company said.

"The six guests were on the game drive when the vehicle was unexpectedly charged by the bull elephant," Keith Vincent, Wilderness' chief executive officer, said in the statement, adding, that the safari guide's vehicle was "blocked" by the terrain at the time of the attack.

"Our guides are all extremely well trained and experienced, but sadly in this instance the terrain and vegetation was such that the guide's route became blocked and he could not move the vehicle out of harm's way quickly enough," Vincent said.

Following the attack, Kafue National Park management was immediately called to assist and a helicopter was dispatched to the scene, according to Vincent. Local police, Zambia's Department of National Parks & Wildlife and other authorities are involved in the investigation, he said.
