Hop On Hop Off in NYC

Hop On Hop Off in NYC

The efficient way to see the city.

Taking a taxi or the subway around the city to get every attraction you want to visit, is not only expensive but you don’t end up seeing much of New York City itself. Hop-on Hop-off bus tours are great for exactly this reason, you can jump on or off whenever you want to. This way you discover the city from a completely new perspective while getting where you want to go.

Hop-on Hop-off Providers and Routes

There are four different operators of Hop-on Hop-off tours in New York. The two most popular providers are TopView Sightseeing (operate the red&white buses) and Big Bus (which use the dark red buses). These two providers have the largest fleet of buses and drive the routes at regular intervals. While these two operators do have slightly more busses meaning that you won’t have to wait as long at the stops, all of the hop on hop off bus tours on offer drive similar routes along with the same attractions.

IMPORTANT: Even though the hop on hop off buses pass most major attractions along their routes, they are not suited for regular transportation within the city. For simply getting from A to B, the subway is a much better choice.

Hop-on Hop off Buses are great if you want to see a lot in little time

Overview of all Hop-on-Hop-off Loops

Both of the operators of the Hop-on-Hop-off tours are fairly comparable, the only difference being the higher popularity of the Big Bus tours. All hop-on-hop-off tours providers offer the same loops: Downtown, Uptown, Brooklyn, and the evening/night tour.

  • Downtown Loop (2 hours)

The most popular tour is the Downtown loop. This tour includes sights such as Times Square, Madison Square Garden, the Empire State Building, SoHo , Battery Park, Radio City Music Hall, Little Italy, Wall Street, the Financial District, Lower East Side, the United Nations Building, Rockefeller Center, Carnegie Hall and many more.

  • Uptown Loop (2 hours)

The Uptown loop takes you to the north of Manhattan. You will cross famous 5th Avenue, drive along Central Park in the direction of Harlem , and will see many other attractions on this tour including Lincoln Center, American Museum of Natural History, Cathedral of St. John the Divine, Grant’s Tomb, Apollo Theater, Harlem Market, The Museum Mile, the Guggenheim, and the Metropolitan Museum.

You can check out the Uptown and Downtown loops plotted on the map below. This way you can check what attractions along the way you want to see along with where you might want to stop to explore.

  • Brooklyn Loop (2 hours)

The third option is the Brooklyn Loop. On this route, you will see the best spots of this beloved borough, for example, the Botanical Garden, the Brooklyn Museum of Art, the Antique Furniture District, Fulton Mall, the Brooklyn Museum, and many others. The new departure point for the tour is Old Fulton Street by Prospect Street in Brooklyn. It no longer connects to any loops in Manhattan.

  • Night Tour (2.5 hours)

The fourth tour is the Evening/Night Tour. This hop-on-hop-off bus tour through NYC is also very popular because seeing New York at twilight and at night is truly something special. You will drive by all relevant attractions: you will have a chance to see Times Square and its nighttime glow, the Empire State Building, Central Park,  Greenwich Village , SoHo, Chinatown, and Little Italy.

  • Harlem Tour (1.5 hours)

You can also take the Harlem/Bronx Tour. This tour will take you way up to the northern part of New York City and covers such great sights as the Malcolm Shabazz Harlem Market, Sylvia’s & Red Rooster Lenox Lounge, the Harlem neighborhoods, and the Yankee Stadium.

Hop On, Hop Off Bus Tours in New York City

Big Bus Bus Tour - New York Hop on Hop off

A great alternative, especially for the first time visitor, is getting around town by taking advantage of a Hop On, Hop Off Bus Tour .

Hop On, Hop Off Bus Tours allow you to take a guided tour around the city from the comfort of a big double Decker bus that stops at all the major attractions. The great part about these types of tours is that you are free to hop off the bus at any of the attractions, spend as much time as you like enjoying it and then hop right back on the bus to continue on to the next destination.

However, like most things in life, there are pros and cons to the Hop On, Hop Off Bus tours and here they are:

The Pros of Hop On, Hop Off Bus Tours

  • They make getting around the city easy. You just hop on, sit back and ride.
  • They stop at all the major attractions , so you don't have to worry about finding your way to them.
  • At one time there was just one tour operator, but now there are several to choose from , which means more competition and better pricing.
  • They usually have tour guides who ride along with you and point out the various places you can visit and tell you some interesting tidbits of information about each of them.
  • If the tour bus drops you off there, you can be confident it's safe for tourists.

The Cons of Hop On, Hop Off Bus Tours

  • They can be expensive, especially for a large family.
  • During peak visitor season, the busses get crowded and you might have to wait in line a long line before you can fit on a bus.
  • Traffic in Manhattan is horrible. Oftentimes, the tour bus will have to crawl along with the rest of the traffic , cutting into your sightseeing time.
  • You will be sharing the bus with other tourists who may be noisy when you're trying to listen to the tour guide, and some of them are slobs, so the bus may be messy.

Representing freedom and democracy, the 305-ft tall statue sits on Liberty Island in the New York Harbor. Take a cruise to the island and climb to the top for expansive harbor views.

9/11 Memorial Museum

Honor the resilience of the human spirit at the 9/11 Memorial Museum, located at the World Trade Center site. Poignant artifacts, photographs, and personal stories documenting the events of September 11, 2001, pay tribute to the lives lost and the heroism displayed on that fateful day.

Dare to stand on the Edge, the highest outdoor sky deck in the Western Hemisphere. Needless to say, the 360-degree views are immaculate, and the glass-floor experience exhilarating. Also, find New York City history exhibits, dining options, and plenty of photo ops at the Edge.

Empire State Building

Another iconic skyscraper, the Empire State Building defines New York’s skyline. You might recognize it from the much-loved films like ‘King Kong’ or ‘Sleepless in Seattle’. Soar to the 86th and 102nd-floor observatories for grand views of the city.

10 Ways To Keep Transportation Costs Under $100 For A Weekend In New York City

  • Save money by using the OMNY program to ride the NYC subway. Tap-to-pay with the same credit card and get free rides after spending $34.
  • Rent a bike and take advantage of the designated bike lanes in NYC for a low-cost and healthy transportation option.
  • Use Uber during off-peak hours for a cheaper method of getting around the city. Consider carpooling with other riders to save even more.

New York City is an incredible site to see, with its many cultural attractions and historic monuments. Affectionately referred to as the "Big Apple", many enjoy retreating to the city for a long weekend away. However, being a bustling hub among the most expensive cities in the world, the costs can quickly add up for even a brief stay.

One of the ways to save money during a weekend in NYC is through clever transportation hacks (combined with skipping New York City's tourist traps and checking out alternatives instead !). Indeed, the city is known for its many public options in terms of subways and taxis, but there are many more modes of transport in NYC that are a bit less known and cheaper.

Below are ten tips to reduce spending and keep transportation under $100 for a weekend in New York City, ranging from cost-cutting hacks when using the NYC subway system to taking advantage of the OMNY program and getting around town on a bicycle, among many more options.

10 New York City Neighborhoods Where You Can Sightsee For Less Than $50 A Day

Ride the nyc subway with the omny program, "live as the locals do" is a standard mantra, and it applies to new york city's subway system.

One of the first ways to save a few dollars during a weekend trip to New York City is by opting to ride the highly popular subway system. The locals use it every day to get to all the different corners of the city, and for good reason; the fare cost is low, and the schedule has many trains operating simultaneously. Therefore, travelers are never left to wait for long before a subway comes.

By utilizing the OMNY option to purchase tickets, travelers can secure free rides after reaching the threshold of $34, which is the equivalent of 12 rides on the subway. If you know you'll be on the go during your weekend in NYC, this program is perfect to get you where you need to be for a lower cost.

  • How to Purchase: Use the same credit card and utilize the tap-to-pay option. Once you reach the threshold, the rest of your rides are free for the week with the OMNY program .

Rent A Bike And Use The Many Bike Lanes In NYC

Riding a bike in nyc is easy and low-cost, with designated lanes and rental programs.

New York City wants those riding bikes in the area to be safe. Therefore, NYC city officials have created specific bike lanes that are only to be used by those on wheeled modes of transportation.

Not only are visitors able to feel secure while rolling through the streets of NYC, but doing so comes at a much lower price than other methods. Not to mention, it's a healthier choice as well!

Within New York City, you will find bikes locked along the sidewalks with the company logo affixed to the side. You can rent one from any of the locations and select the time frame in which you want to utilize it right from an app.

  • How To Purchase: There are many rental programs available throughout the city. When you come across one you would like to use, download the app for the company that offers it and follow the steps to unlock the bike and ride.

Opt For Uber During Off-Peak Hours

The cost of uber in nyc can add up, but it's cheaper at off-peak times.

If you're planning a night out in New York City, you will want to secure a safe mode of transport back to your hotel. However, using Uber during those high-demand times (referred to as surge) can cause a significant dent in your wallet.

It's best to find alternative methods if you can during those times to avoid the excessive fees. However, during non-surge periods, Uber can be a very cheap option to get you around the city.

  • How To Purchase: Download the Uber app on your phone and type in the address you want to go to. The program will locate a nearby driver for you and provide you with a cost for the ride.

Uber and Lyft also allow you to carpool with other riders. This option will still take you to your destination, but the driver will be picking up other riders as you go. If you want to save even more, this route is a great choice to reduce your expenses.

Travel By Train For Longer Distances

Don't limit yourself to the city center; take the train to explore further.

New York City has many different boroughs worth exploring if you have the time. Additionally, many other cities near NYC are just a short trip away and deserve a few hours' visit for those with extra time to spare. While the subway reaches many of these destinations, there are times when trains make for a lower cost and more comfortable option.

Whether considering a few hours in Brooklyn, Philadelphia, or Jersey City, there are many different train companies that can get you where you need to go.

  • How To Purchase: Visit the Long Island Rail Road, Amtrak, or Metro train sites to find the various fares. You can purchase them from the website, app, or in person.

Walk The Pedestrian-Focused City

Nyc sees a lot of foot traffic; not only is it free, but it allows immersion in city life.

It's no surprise that the large population of New York City and the constant stream of people moving from location to location makes for a pedestrian-focused city. It's rare to find a place in the city that people can't reach on foot. With many sidewalks and crosswalks, it's always easy to find a safe location to walk.

Walking throughout the city gives pedestrians a chance to see things they wouldn't if they were speeding through in a taxi or on the subway. Being on your own two feet gives you the opportunity to see the city up close and personal in a unique way.

  • How To Purchase: Outside of needing a good pair of walking shoes, this transportation option is completely free!

10 Things To Do In New York City: Complete Guide To The Big Apple

Hop on a city bus, like the subway system, nyc buses go everywhere for a low price.

For those who are tired of walking or want to escape the outdoors for a bit, taking one of the many NYC city buses is a cheap and effective method of transportation. There are many apps available for phones that will alert you when a bus is on its way and provide timetables for each stop and route.

Next time you are setting out to visit one of the many unique and fun attractions NYC offers , don't hesitate to utilize one of the abundance of city buses available to locals and tourists alike.

  • How To Purchase: New York City is now piloting fare-free buses on some lines. However, for the stops that aren't included, riders can pay with exact change or purchase a metro card from a kiosk.

Try Hop On/Hop Off Tours

A ride and a tour of nyc at the same time what can be better.

It may sound touristy, but there's a lot of value in purchasing a package with an NYC Hop On/Hop Off tour company. When you secure a ticket, you get unlimited rides for durations starting at 24 hours and going up to a full week.

During that time, you can jump on the bus as you see fit and ride it to the stop of your choice. All you need to do is scan your ticket when you get onto the bus. Easy!

  • How To Purchase: You can purchase a pass for this service directly from the company's website, from various travel sites, or from representatives near the designated stops.

Take A Free And Scenic Ferry Ride

Interested in visiting staten island or seeing the statue of liberty up close for free.

One of the most famous cruises in New York City comes at the very low price of free ! Taking the ferry from the city over to Staten Island gives you the perfect view of the Statue of Liberty and free transportation over to the island.

With many rows of seats and refreshments often available for purchase, taking the ferry is a peaceful and relaxing way to take in a historic landmark without breaking the bank.

  • How To Purchase: There is no cost to take part in this service. All you need to do is show up at the dock at the time you want to hop on.

To get the best views of the Statue of Liberty and for unobstructed photos, be sure to stand on the outside balcony.

Rent A Car With Turo

See nyc on your own schedule with a personal vehicle.

There are some who will always feel more comfortable being in their own mode of transportation, and when visiting a new city, most people want the experience to be enjoyable. Therefore, forcing yourself to take the subway or taxi in NYC can take away from the excitement. In those cases, renting a car is a great option. However, you don't have to go through a traditional company to do so.

Turo is a company that operates a bit like Airbnb in that you rent someone's personal vehicle for your own use. Just as you would with a rental car, you have a designated pick-up and drop-off time, and you can opt for additional services. The cost is often much lower than using a larger vehicle rental company but just as convenient.

  • How To Purchase: Through the Turo website , you can select the type of car and rental period, as well as choose between various protection plans.

10 Towns To Stay Just Outside Of New York City That Also Provide Easy Access To The City

Scoot through the city with ease, select a scooter from the various companies offered in the city and explore.

These days, you see them everywhere. Parked along the sidewalks in bigger cities are throngs of electric scooters available for rent. People often zip around to their various points of interest in half the time it takes to walk with these modern-style modes of transportation: the e-scooter!

What's more, the price is very affordable, and you get a view of New York City that is more in tune with what you get by walking. You can reserve a scooter online and drop it off when you are done at any spot, depending on the company you choose.

  • How To Purchase: Visit the website of the NYC scooter rental company you wish to rent, and it will provide you with steps on how to unlock the device.
