You can travel far and wide, but we dare you to find a hotel hair dryer that is anything more than average. As anyone who’s tried to style their hair on-the-go can attest, they’re often weak, loud and ultimately no better than letting your hair dry naturally.

The obvious solution is to lug your favourite device everywhere you go. However, hair dryers tend to be bulky and heavy, not to mention they take up vital room if your travels are limited by baggage weight restrictions.

Enter the travel dryer. Admittedly many of them are barely a step above hotel room fare, but if any brand can buck the trend it’s ghd. The go-to brand for hair tools of all shapes and sizes, its flight travel dryer packs all of its usual technical wizardry into a device that’s compact and travel-friendly.

Ghd promises that it packs 70 per cent of the power of the brand’s full-size dryer, but when we got it out of the box, we were baffled how something so small could be so mighty. Dreaming of future travels, our tester got to work using it in her regular styling routine to see how it held up.

First and foremost, this hair dryer is tiny. That’s a given for travel-size products of any kind, but we were still shocked.

It’s clearly been designed with practicality in mind, utilising a folding handle and smaller than average barrel. You can be rest assured it’ll work wherever you travel as it’s dual voltage. Most notably, it’s incredibly lightweight, coming in at just 422g – perfect for hand luggage or a handbag.

From a technical perspective, some of the features are similar to ghd’s other hair dryers. Safeguard technology means it switches off if it’s held too close to hair, which helps prevent hair damage. You can also toggle between low and high speed settings.

But most importantly: how well does it dry your hair? Our tester has very long, thick hair, and if there was any difference in the length of time it took to try, it was minimal. It doesn’t feel quite as powerful as a full-size dryer – which is to be expected – but it still feels much more powerful than full-size offerings from some of ghd’s competitors.

To keep devices like this so small, they have to be stripped down to basics. In truth, sometimes we get overwhelmed by the sheer amount of options on very ambitious styling tools, so we weren’t too fussed about that. The only way it (very slightly) hindered the experience was the fact that temperature-wise you only had the options of the cool shot or the full blast of 65C, which sometimes felt too hot and harsh. However, considering we would only be using this on-the-go, it’s a minor complaint and it never left our hair feeling singed, especially when prepped with a moisturising hair oil. We also found the cord a smidge too short, but again, this is to be expected.

Those with curly hair will lament the absence of a diffuser — you only get one attachment, which is a precision drying nozzle. This was great for producing both super sleek styles and bouncy blow dries. The weight of the dryer also helps with the latter; at no point did we experience aching arms from lengthy styling.

Functionally, the ghd flight travel model is the most practical hair dryer we’ve ever used. It’s lightweight almost beyond belief, easy to slip into your bag, and makes easy work of thin and thick hair alike.

You do get less control over styling than non-travel dryers from ghd. However, this is to be expected from something that exists purely to maintain some semblance of normal life on the move.

Like all of ghd’s tools, it feels like the standard all similar products should aim to replicate. Even some full-size dryers could learn from this kind of easy, powerful styling. It goes without saying, but this is a marked step up from the hotel hair dryer.

A compact, lightweight hair dryer that’s ideal for traveling.

The GHD Flight is a lightweight hair care appliance, ideal for taking on the go. Simple to use, it may not be as powerful as GHD’s other models, but it still ensures hair is dried relatively quickly, and folds up for compact storage. However, it doesn’t have the ability to make shine like other hair dryers we’ve tested and there are cheaper travel hair dryers available.

Updated: February 2024. The GHD Flight has now been replaced with the GHD Flight+, which as of writing we've yet to get our hands on. It's more expensive than its predecessor; significantly so in the UK and Australia, but does now exclusively come as part of a gift set which includes a pretty chic protective travel case, so that's a benefit if you like keeping your kit in a good state. Its specs are slightly better compared to those listed in our original review; the Flight+ is now 49% lighter (vs. 50% previously) and 25% smaller than the GHD Air, but offers 78% of the power (vs. 70% previously). The rest of the review remains unchanged.

GHD is most well known for its hair straighteners. The company has spent the past two decades offering ceramic-plated flat irons, taking over from steam -powered straighteners as the must-have tool for hair styling. 

However, more than nine years ago, GHD also dipped its toe in the world of hair dryers , and now offers three different models, the smallest and most compact of which is the GHD Flight. Designed to be packed in your suitcase, the GHD Flight is 50% lighter than the GHD Air , but offers 70% of the power, at 1400W, allowing you to dry your hair in a relatively short frame of time.

Should I buy?

The GHD Flight comes with a folding handle, which ensures the hair dryer takes up as little space in your suitcase as possible. It operates on both 120V and 240V electrical supplies, so it really can be used anywhere in the world.

It has two temperature settings, along with a slower, cool-shot option for setting styles, and the hair dryer will automatically switch off if held too close to the hair when blow-drying to prevent overheating, too. In the box you’ll find a concentrator nozzle and a carry pouch.

At $99 / £59 / AU$99, the GHD Flight is the most affordable hair dryer GHD offers, and is ideal for those on a budget. It also makes a great additional hair dryer for those who travel, easily slipping into a bag or suitcase, safe in the knowledge that it won’t send luggage over a weight limit. However, those looking for a hair dryer with a plethora of attachments to create a wide array of hair styles might be better looking elsewhere.

The GHD Flight is the brand’s entry-level hair dryer and is priced at $99 / £59 / AU$99. It’s available from GHD or Amazon worldwide. 

GHD also offers a mid-range hair dryer, the GHD Air, which will set you back $199 / £99 / AU$220, while it’s top-of-the-range model, the GHD Helios , costs $249 / £159 / AU$295.

The GHD Flight is the most compact hair dryer we’ve tested to date, measuring 9.6 x 5.2 x 2.7 inches / 24.4 x 13.3 x 6.8cm (h x w x d). It’s folding handle means its dimensions come down further still to 7.9 x 4.1 x 2.7 inches / 20 x 10.5 x 6.8cm. It’s lightweight, too, coming in at just 0.9lb / 422g.

The hair dryer features a stylish matt black design, with a gold slider that lets you select one of the two temperature settings, or the cool-shot function for setting your hair after styling – a look that apes the GHD Air, although the gold band around the barrel of the Air hair dryer has been dropped in favor of a glossy black accent. 

As already mentioned, the 1400W hair dryer is dual voltage, so it can be used anywhere in the world. Simply use a coin to turn to the dial to select the correct voltage (either 120V or 240V) for the country in which you’re using it. The hair dryer has a 6ft / 1.8m cable and comes with a concentrator nozzle and a soft carry pouch in the box.

The hanging loop is also a nice touch, and is usually a feature on hair dryers used in salons.

Even though the GHD Flight offers less power than some of the brand's other hair dryers, it certainly isn’t sluggish when it comes to drying times. On the lowest temperature setting, it took 5 minutes and 52 seconds to take below-shoulder-length fine hair from damp to completely dry. Using the hottest settings shaved 1 minute and 51 seconds off this time. On both settings, locks were left smooth – although they lacked the shine we’ve achieved with other hair dryers, plus there were more fly-away strands than usual.

We put this down to the lack of technology that uses negative ions to speed up evaporation and reduce flyaway strands. 

The GHD Flight felt balanced in the hand when blow-drying hair, and was comfortable to hold, both in the left and right hands (we switched hands, depending upon the side of the head being styled). The hair dryer was easy to fold into its more compact form, while the hinge felt durable and offered a reassuring click as the handle was moved. 

Also notable is the fact that the GHD Flight will automatically switch off if held too close to the hair, to stop the hair dryer from overheating. However, we were disappointed to find that the filter isn’t removable, which can make cleaning the hair dryer more difficult. 

For noise, the GHD Flight registered 77.8db on our decibel meter on its fastest setting. This puts it middle-of-the-range when it comes to noisy hair-care appliances, and is equivalent to the level of noise made by a vacuum cleaner . However, since it is likely to be on for only a few minutes at a time, it’s unlikely to bother too much.

Should I buy the GHD Flight?

Buy it if....

You want a compact hair dryer Measuring 7.9 x 4.1 x 2.7 inches  / 20 x 10.5 x 6.8cm when folded, and weighing just 0.9lb / 422g, the GHD Flight is one of the most compact hair dryers we’ve tested.

You’re on a budget While it isn’t the cheapest hair dryer on the market, it’s the most affordable hair-care appliance GHD offers. As such, if you’re after a salon brand but money is tight, this hair dryer is worth considering. 

You want dual voltage Many travel hair dryers, while compact, aren’t necessarily suitable for use all over the world. The GHD Flight offers variable voltage, making it ideal for those who want a hair dryer that will work abroad in various countries.

Don't buy it if...

You want a range of attachments If you’re looking to create a range of hair styles when blow-drying your locks, you’ll need a number of different attachments including concentrator nozzles and diffusers. The GHD comes with only one attachment, so is best avoided if you’re looking for greater versatility. 

You want a quiet hair dryer Registering 77.8db on our decibel meter means this isn’t the quietest hair dryer we’ve tested. It isn’t the loudest either, but it’s one to avoid is noisy appliances are a frustration.

You want a removable filter This is a small point, but one that makes all the difference for keeping your hair dryer in tip-top condition. Fixed to the hair dryer, it will be difficult to remove a build-up of lint off the GHD Flight’s filter.

What is the GHD Flight?

For jet-setting types, the GHD Flight offers much of what you’d expect from GHD’s fully fledged models in a more compact, lightweight and travel-friendly design. In fact, the GHD Flight promises 85% of the power, while packing 60% less weight.

Understandably, features are stripped back, but the GHD FLight’s dual voltage design will allow it to work at its best on both sides of the pond, and it comes with its own travel case too.

GHD Flight – Design and features

The GHD Flight feels far more plasticky compared to its larger sibling, the GHD Air , but the upside is a main body weight of just 300g, and a manufacturer quoted 422g in total.

To keep it compact as well as lightweight for travelling, the hairdryer’s handle folds in on itself, and the unit’s head is relatively dinky too. It seems strange, then, to bundle it all in a fairly sizeable hard-shell travel case – albeit one that looks very nice indeed.

Controls are located on the inside of the handle, and comprise a single slider function to choose one of three settings: warm and low, hot and high, and a “cool” setting. There are no individual controls for choosing heat and speed separately, but we wouldn’t really expect that level of functionality in a travel hairdryer.

Underneath these controls, the GHD Flight has a switch for its variable voltage, with a choice of 240V (for the UK and Europe) and 120V (for USA, Canada and South America), allowing you to use it safely whilst abroad.

The hairdryer comes with one removable nozzle, which isn’t the most useful for precision drying, and a cable that measures 1.75 metres. That’s pretty generous for a travel hairdryer.

GHD Flight – Performance

The GHD Flight is pretty powerful for such a compact unit. GHD doesn’t quote an official wattage, but the hairdryer managed wind speeds of 15.6m/s at its highest setting –which isn’t far off the maximum speed of the Lee Stafford Coco Loco Blow & Go Nuts .

It did take quite a while to dry our test cloth, however, at around three minutes. Nevertheless, this isn’t a bad result considering it’s only a minute slower than the much larger, more powerful Panasonic EH-NA65-K .

Those with thick hair may find that it takes some time to dry their hair thoroughly with the GHD Flight, however. Even on its highest setting, it still doesn’t reach the heat levels of standard sized models.

Note, too, that the GHD Flight’s coolest setting doesn’t really replace the job of a cool shot button. There’s still a bit of warmth to the air, meaning it isn’t as effective at setting styles. There’s no anti-frizz technology either, so if you’re a sufferer then you’ll need to use product to help keep it at bay.

Overall, though, the GHD Flight does a good job of quick on-the-go drying, offering some control for more in-depth styling.

Noise measures in at a relatively quiet 100dB – but considering it’s at least half the size of standard dryers we’ve tested, that’s a little on the loud side. It also sounds noisier than some larger hairdryers, since its motor has quite a high-pitched tone.

However, you’re likely to overlook these minor quibbles in a travel model, placing power and portability at the top of the list of priorities – and in this regard the GHD Flight ticks both boxes.

Why buy the GHD Flight?

If you need a compact travel hairdryer that doesn’t scrimp on power, the GHD Flight is well worth a look. At £59, it isn’t the cheapest, but it performs closer to that of standard sized models than rivals.

Inevitably for a travel model, there are some compromises, but it will dry all but the thickest of hair types relatively quickly for its size.

A very stylish travel companion indeed.
