Carnival and Grand Turk Release New Guidelines for Access to the Cruise Port

Ben Souza

Carnival Corporation and Grand Turk have released new guidelines for public access to the port when cruise ships are visiting. The changes were made to ensure that all cruise passengers have a safe and enjoyable experience at the port.

Grand Turk cruise port

This new agreement between Carnival Corporation, The Turks & Caicos Islands Government, and the Grand Turk Cruise Center (GTCC) will help provide a safe and secure environment for all guests who are visiting the port.

The new policy promotes a family-friendly atmosphere and these new guidelines will also help maintain the popularity of Grand Turk with cruise guests, support local businesses and foster a welcoming and business-friendly environment for food, beverage, shore excursion, and retail partners.

This policy will be effective on Thursday, August 15, 2024 and applies to when cruise ships are in port:

  • During operating hours (when a cruise ship is in port), access to GTCC by the general public is only granted to individuals who obtain a one-day identification (ID) badge.
  • Access will be by the main entrance and will be free of charge.

Note: Cruise ship passengers will not have to receive an ID badge, it only applies to those who are staying on the island who want to access the port.

Visitors age 18 years and older can receive an ID badge at the main entrance to GTCC. Those under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

Anyone guest show accesses the cruise port without an ID badge will be turned over to law enforcement.

Weapons and any threatening language or behavior will not be tolerated.

Visitors who are granted access to the port agree to not promote any businesses with sales and solicitation being prohibited.

Cruise lines and approved tour operators will be the only ones who can conduct business in the port.

Juan Fernandez, vice president of Carnival Corporation’s destination operations, gave the following statement:

“We greatly appreciate the collaborative spirit of partnership from government and cruise center leaders to provide an added layer of security at the Grand Turk Cruise Center facilities, while also allowing residents all opportunities to enjoy the beach, shopping and restaurants.”

The Honourable Charles Washington Misick, Premier of the Turks & Caicos Islands, added:

“The Government’s role is to ensure that those with access to the facilities at the Grand Turk Cruise Center – be they cruise passengers, tour operators, vendors, and visitors to the port – have an enjoyable experience. The Government is committed to working with Grand Turk Cruise Center to improve service delivery so that the destination remains competitive, whilst ensuring safety, and providing sustainable economic opportunities.”

News Release

Turks & caicos islands government, the grand turk cruise center and carnival corporation announce new guidelines for public access to cruise port facilities.

The Turks & Caicos Islands Government, the Grand Turk Cruise Center (GTCC) and Carnival Corporation have reached agreement on new guidelines for public access to the GTCC facilities which reflect the shared desire for residents to continue to enjoy the facilities as well as provide a safe and secure environment for guests, GTCC employees and the Grand Turk community who are visiting.  By promoting a family-friendly atmosphere, these guidelines will also maintain the popularity of Grand Turk with cruise guests, support local businesses and foster a welcoming and business-friendly environment for food, beverage, shore excursion, and retail partners. This policy will be effective on Thursday, August 15.

“We greatly appreciate the collaborative spirit of partnership from government and cruise center leaders to provide an added layer of security at the Grand Turk Cruise Center facilities, while also allowing residents all opportunities to enjoy the beach, shopping and restaurants,” said Juan Fernandez, vice president of Carnival Corporation’s destination operations.

Effective on Thursday, August 15 , visitors from the community will be asked to follow new guidelines and procedures to access the Grand Turk Cruise Center (GTCC):

  • During operating hours (when a ship is in port), access to GTCC by the public is only granted to individuals who obtain a one-day identification (ID) badge.
  • Access will be by the main entrance and will be free of charge.
  • Individuals 18 years and older must present a valid form of government ID.
  • Individuals under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult with a valid form of government ID.
  • The ID badge will be issued by officers of the GTCC at the main entrance. Individuals who have violated the code of conduct of the GTCC will be denied entry.
  • Any individual on the GTCC premises without an ID badge will be asked to leave immediately and will be referred to law enforcement.

Each individual seeking entrance must acknowledge and adhere to the Code of Conduct while at the GTCC:

  • Visitors to the GTCC shall not engage in ANY business activities within the port. No sales or solicitation of any kind are permitted. Only tour operators approved by the GTCC, and with official tours sold by the cruise lines, can conduct business on port premises.
  • No illegal activity will take place at the port. This includes but is not limited to narcotics sales or use, theft or attempted theft, assault or threats of assault.
  • Visitors to the GTCC shall not interfere in work activities of GTCC employees or licensed tour operators in good standing with GTCC.
  • Visitors to the GTCC shall not pose a public nuisance that interferes with GTCC employees, guests, or licensed tour operators.  A public nuisance is defined but not limited to the obstruction of the public right of way of pedestrian passage, or any act that endangers the morals, comfort level of the public, or obstructs the enjoyment of rights common to all.
  • No weapons of any kind are allowed, which include but are not limited to firearm(s) or knife(s).
  • No use of abusive, offensive, threatening language or behaviors.

Any violations of the above will result in removal from the GTCC property and the revocation of the ID badge by GTCC officers. Violators will also lose the ability to obtain an ID badge for a minimum of three months or higher depending on the severity of the violation.

Commenting on the revised Standard Operating Procedures, the Honourable Charles Washington Misick, Premier of the Turks & Caicos Islands, stated that “the Government’s role is to ensure that those with access to the facilities at the Grand Turk Cruise Center – be they cruise passengers, tour operators, vendors, and visitors to the port – have an enjoyable experience.  The Government is committed to working with Grand Turk Cruise Center to improve service delivery so that the destination remains competitive, whilst ensuring safety, and providing sustainable economic opportunities.”

Providing a safe and secure environment for guests to visit any destination is the joint responsibility of the operator, law enforcement and the government as well as the community at large.  We expect these new procedures will ensure the welcoming atmosphere we so value in Grand Turk.

A Suspected Blood Clot Landed Me in a Cruise Ship Medical Center

Advanced equipment and medication make it easy to care for passengers and crew.

Jill Schildhouse,

an illustration of a cruise ship with medical supplies in the background

As I limped on board a cruise ship after a flight from Phoenix to Barcelona, Spain, my heart began to race: This was exactly how my left calf felt when I’d had a blood clot . Sure, that was nine years ago, but it’s not a sensation I’d ever forget.

I was dumbfounded, as I’d taken all the proper precautions my hematologist and vascular surgeon insisted on before each of my frequent long-haul flights: I took my blood thinner, wore medical-grade compression socks , drank plenty of water and got up to walk and do calf raises every hour or two in flight. How could this be happening again? And right before two back-to-back cruises around Spain, Italy, France and Malta that my dad and I had been looking forward to for months.

Yet there I was on embarkation day, terrified I could die of deep vein thrombosis in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea because I wouldn’t be able to receive proper medical attention. As soon as we put our belongings in our cabin, I looked at my dad and said, “I have to go find the ship doctor and see what they say — before the ship leaves port in a few hours. I may have to disembark and go to a hospital.”

a medical facility's waiting room

Visiting a megaship’s medical center

Off we went, down to a lower deck to the medical facility. I walked in and explained to the person at the desk that I suspected I had a DVT and asked what diagnostic capabilities they had on board. Over the course of the next 90 minutes, a nurse did a thorough intake, took my blood and performed an ultrasound.

Soon, I saw a doctor who was able to definitively rule out a blood clot. The diagnosis? A pulled muscle from running through the Philadelphia airport to catch a tight connection — she said that the symptoms between that and a DVT are so similar (pain and tenderness in the leg, leg swelling, muscle spasms) that it’s a good thing I double-checked given my history. An onboard massage worked out my calf muscle and two days later I was able to join my preplanned excursions (the ones I missed were refunded by the cruise line since the medical team knew I couldn’t participate in them).

photo of Jill Schildhouse at a cruise medical facility

I was surprised and impressed by the advanced equipment they had on board, and asked if that was common on cruise ships. The doctor explained that it was on many cruise lines, since they not only have to treat passengers, but the crew as well. In fact, 50 percent of passengers are older than 50, according to the “Cruise Lines International Association 2023 Global Passenger Report.” And, according to National Council on Aging research, nearly 95 percent of adults 60 and older have at least one chronic condition, while nearly 80 percent have two or more. It stands to reason that the medical capabilities would be robust.

But the MSC World Europa is a megaship that can carry up to 6,762 passengers on board — would travelers on smaller ships have the same luck if they needed medical care?

Small- and midsize ships are also fully equipped

“Our ships are equipped with the most modern medical equipment available in the medical market,” says emergency physician Ibrain Soto, M.D., the doctor on board Crystal Serenity , a ship that holds just 740 passengers. The ship follows the recommendations of the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) regarding the minimum amount of medical equipment to carry on board cruise ships. This includes an onboard laboratory, X-ray machine, cardiac monitor and defibrillator, an EKG, ventilator/respirator, infusion pumps and an onboard pharmacy.

Soto says the ship’s medical team includes one doctor and two nurses, who are required to have intensive care and emergency medicine training, plus more than five years of experience in the field. “We are able to diagnose and treat all medical and trauma emergencies and provide initial stabilization on board,” he says. “Our medical team is also trained to manage chronic medical conditions for our crew and passengers of any age group. Ninety percent of our guests are over 50, so we are very familiar with the management of medical conditions of patients in advanced age groups.”

Holland America Line

Up to $200 onboard credit on select cruises

Ships even smaller than Serenity — like Scenic, a cruise line with a fleet of ships that carry fewer than 230 passengers — also have robust capabilities. In fact, according to Liz Baugh, Scenic’s lead medical consultant, who served as a medic in the Royal Navy, this line has an X-ray machine, blood analyzers, ECG and a range of diagnostic tests, alongside a fully equipped emergency cart with a manual defibrillator and a military-grade portable ventilator. And the cruise line has even gone so far as to scrutinize data from the last four years to build a robust pharmaceutical list to remain as self-reliant as possible.

“We risk-assess everything based on the worst-case scenario and work our way back from there to make sure that we have covered the risks within our control and have a plan for things that may come up unexpectedly,” says Baugh. This quest for self-reliance is especially crucial given Scenic’s prevalence in some of the most challenging maritime environments: ships that sail in polar regions, where there is a lack of resources.

What can’t cruise ships handle?

While cruise ship capabilities are seemingly endless, there are some medical conditions beyond their purview. This includes more serious dental issues, though doctors can do some basic (temporary) dental repairs. “Other areas that are beyond the ship’s capabilities would be complex cardiac or abdominal issues requiring specialist investigations,” Baugh says.

She explains that Scenic also has 24/7 access to a clinical second opinion service. Depending on the outcome of that discussion, Baugh says the doctor will then assess the urgency of the condition and make a plan. Based on the degree of the emergency, Soto’s team would consult with a shoreside medical consultant. The passenger could be sent ashore in the next port of call for further examination or medically evacuated directly from the ship, either by ground or air ambulance. A heart attack or stroke would need “urgent medical evacuation,” Soto says.

How much does onboard medical care cost?

I had to do a double-take when I received my own bill — it was 166.15 euros (about $180) for my visit, both tests and the pain relievers they prescribed. If this had gone through my insurance in the United States, it would have cost quite a bit more.

The medical facilities don’t use insurance. However, detailed paperwork will be provided should you want to initiate a claim with your insurance company. The cost of medical care is added to the overall cruise bill and paid at the end of the cruise.

Both Baugh and Soto explained that the costs are kept as low as possible to avoid deterring people from seeking medical care when it’s needed. Also, the medical department isn’t used as a revenue driver, Soto says. And if the bill grows because of longer or more advanced care, “we will always provide our guests with a proper internationally coded medical bill and a letter for them to be able to [file a] claim from their insurance once they return home,” Soto says.

Tips for avoiding an onboard medical visit

Hoping to avoid the medical center altogether? Baugh advises knowing your limitations and remembering that you are on a moving platform, which can affect balance. “On holiday, normal routines can be somewhat changed, so think carefully about your medical needs and make a plan for factoring in the effect that a change in routine may have on any medication that they normally take,” she says.

And always bring extra prescription medication, since, as Soto says, guests often forget to bring their medicine or run out during the cruise. In these cases, he says the medical team will provide the medication through its onboard pharmacy for the duration of the cruise. And if the medication isn’t available on board, the doctor will write a prescription and the cruise line’s port agent will purchase it locally.

New Public Access Guidelines Established At Grand Turk Cruise Center

cruise center romandie

The Turks & Caicos Islands Government, the Grand Turk Cruise Center (GTCC) and Carnival Corporation have reached agreement on new guidelines for public access to the GTCC facilities, which government said reflect the shared desire for residents to continue enjoying the facilities as well as provide a safe and secure environment for guests, GTCC employees and the Grand Turk community who are visiting.

According to a news release, the government outlined that by promoting a family-friendly atmosphere, the guidelines will also maintain the popularity of Grand Turk with cruise guests, support local businesses and foster a welcoming and business-friendly environment for food, beverage, shore excursion, and retail partners. This policy will be effective on Thursday, August 15.

Effective on Thursday, August 15, visitors from the community will be asked to follow new guidelines and procedures to access the Grand Turk Cruise Center (GTCC):

During operating hours (when a ship is in port), access to GTCC by the public is only granted to individuals who obtain a one-day identification (ID) badge.

Access will be by the main entrance and will be free of charge. An ID badge will be issued to each individual at the GTCC’s main entrance guard gate. Individuals 18 years and older must present a valid form of government ID. Individuals under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult with a valid form of government ID.

The ID badge will be issued by officers of the GTCC at the main entrance. Individuals who have violated the code of conduct of the GTCC will be denied entry.

Any individual on the GTCC premises without an ID badge will be asked to leave immediately and will be referred to law enforcement.

Each individual seeking entrance must acknowledge and adhere to the Code of Conduct while at the GTCC:

Visitors to the GTCC shall not engage in ANY business activities within the port. No sales or solicitation of any kind are permitted. Only tour operators approved by the GTCC, and with official tours sold by the cruise lines, can conduct business on port premises.

No illegal activity will take place at the port. This includes but not limited to narcotics sales or use, theft or attempted theft, assault or threats of assault.

Visitors to the GTCC shall not interfere in work activities of GTCC, that role is given to employees or licensed tour operators in good standing with GTCC.

Visitors to the GTCC shall not pose a public nuisance that interferes with GTCC employees, guests, or licensed tour operators.  A public nuisance is defined but not limited to the obstruction of the public right of way of pedestrian passage, or any act that endangers the morals, comfort level of the public, or obstructs the enjoyment of rights common to all.

No weapons of any kind are allowed, which include but are not limited to firearm(s) or knife(s).

No use of abusive, offensive, threatening language or behaviors.

Any violations of the above will result in removal from the GTCC property and the revocation of the ID badge by GTCC officers. Violators will also lose the ability to obtain an ID badge for a minimum of three months or higher depending on the severity of the violation.

Also commenting on the revised standard operating procedures, Premier Hon. Washington Misick, stated:  “the Government’s role is to ensure that those with access to the facilities at the Grand Turk Cruise Center – be they cruise passengers, tour operators, vendors, and visitors to the port – have an enjoyable experience.

“The Government is committed to working with Grand Turk Cruise Center to improve service delivery so that the destination remains competitive, whilst ensuring safety, and providing sustainable economic opportunities.”

He pointed out that providing a safe and secure environment for guests to visit any destination is the joint responsibility of the operator, law enforcement and the government as well as the community at large.

“We expect these new procedures will ensure the welcoming atmosphere we so value in Grand Turk,” the release further noted.

Turks & Caicos introduces new access rules for Grand Turk Cruise Center

CruiseMapper logo

The Turks & Caicos Islands Government, in collaboration with the Grand Turk Cruise Center/GTCC  and Carnival Corporation , has established new access guidelines for the GTCC facilities. These guidelines aim to balance public access with the safety and security of tourists,  GTCC employees, and the local Grand Turk community.

The updated policies, effective from August 15th, are designed to maintain a family-friendly environment that supports local businesses and ensures the continued appeal of Grand Turk as a cruise destination.

Key aspects of the new guidelines include:

  • Public access to the GTCC during operating hours (when a cruise ship is in port) will require individuals to obtain a one-day identification (ID) badge, issued at the main entrance free of charge.
  • Adults (18 and older) must present a valid government ID to receive an ID badge, and minors must be accompanied by an adult with valid identification.
  • The GTCC’s Code of Conduct, which prohibits unauthorized business activities, illegal actions, interference with operations, public nuisances, and the possession of weapons, must be acknowledged and adhered to by all visitors.
  • Any violations of the Code of Conduct will result in immediate removal from the premises, revocation of the ID badge, and a potential ban on future access for at least three months, depending on the severity of the offense.

These measures are intended to ensure a secure and welcoming environment for all GTCC visitors and to protect the operational integrity of the port.

Japan Warns of Elevated Risk of Giant Earthquake After Strong One Hits

The official warning came after a 7.1-magnitude temblor struck off the coast of southern Japan on Thursday.

Strong Earthquake Hits Southern Japan

Shake intensity.

River Akira Davis

By River Akira Davis Kiuko Notoya Hisako Ueno and Victoria Kim

River Akira Davis, Kiuko Notoya and Hisako Ueno reported from Tokyo, and Victoria Kim from Seoul.

Japan’s meteorological agency said on Thursday that there was a higher-than-usual chance that an immense earthquake could hit the country in the next few days, following a 7.1-magnitude temblor off the southern island of Kyushu.

Japan has long expected a major earthquake to occur along the Nankai Trough off its eastern coast. As of last year, researchers said there was a 60 percent chance that an earthquake of magnitude 8 to 9 — even more devastating than the one in 2011 that laid waste to the country’s northeast coast and knocked out cooling systems at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant — would occur in the trough area over the next 20 years.

After the 7.1-magnitude quake on Thursday, Japan’s meteorological agency convened a group of experts to evaluate whether it could be related to the long-anticipated bigger disaster, called a “Nankai Trough megathrust earthquake.”

Experts warn that an earthquake between two tectonic plates that converge along the Nankai megathrust fault, which runs from Kyushu north through Tokyo, could cause devastation. It could extensively damage cities throughout Japan, potentially cause a tsunami and lead to hundreds of thousands of deaths.

“The possibility of a large-scale earthquake occurring in the area of the Nankai Trough is relatively higher than usual,” the meteorological agency said in a statement late Thursday.

The risk that an earthquake of magnitude of 8 or higher would occur after one with a magnitude of 7 is particularly elevated for about a week after the initial temblor, the agency said.

A group of people in bright orange hats crouch on the ground, and a couple of people remain standing. A large statue looms in the background.

Japan’s meteorological agency issued a “caution” level of warning on Thursday. The next step up would be an “alert,” which would advise residents to evacuate from areas deemed a tsunami risk. The agency said it was the first time Japan had issued a “caution.”

Prime Minister Fumio Kishida urged people to ensure that they were ready at all times in case an earthquake occurred and they had to evacuate. He told reporters that the government was on high alert.

Earlier on Thursday, a tsunami advisory was issued for coastal regions on the southern Japanese islands of Kyushu and Shikoku after the 7.1-magnitude quake. As of late Thursday evening, the maximum height of waves recorded reached about a foot and a half off the coast of Miyazaki Prefecture on Kyushu.

A handful of injuries but no deaths were reported related to the earthquake. Footage showed images of strong shaking in buildings in Miyazaki Prefecture, but damage in the area appeared to be minimal. The earthquake occurred less than 20 miles off the coast of Miyazaki, according to the United States Geological Survey.

Bullet train service was temporarily halted on Kyushu, and the Miyazaki Airport suspended takeoffs and landings to inspect runways for any damage. Both bullet train and airport operations resumed later Thursday evening.

The Kyushu Electric Power Company said its nuclear power plants were operating normally.

Separate from the heightened possibility of a Nankai Trough earthquake, Japan’s meteorological agency advised being alert for aftershocks of a similar magnitude off the eastern coast of Miyazaki Prefecture over the next week. It said that landslides could also be a risk if there is rain in the coming days.

An earlier version of this article used an incorrect map showing an earthquake on Japan’s west coast. The earthquakes occurred on Japan’s east coast.

National Hurricane Center tracking system with 60% chance of developing. See Florida impact

Portrait of Cheryl McCloud

In a rush? Here's everything you need to know — in less than a minute — about what's happening in the tropics.

A tropical cyclone has a 60 percent of developing this week, according to the latest advisory from the National Hurricane Center .

If sustained winds reach 39 mph, it could become Tropical Storm Debby, the fourth named storm of the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season.

➤ Track all active storms

The system has a 60 percent chance of development over the next seven days , and a tropical depression could form late this week, NHC forecasters said.

AccuWeather meteorologists said there's a chance the system could become a tropical storm before approaching the U.S. in early August.

Although the colored area may look like the Hurricane's Center "cone of concern," the orange area on the agency's tropical outlook map actually signifies where a tropical cyclone could develop .

Tropical cyclone is the generic term that covers all tropical systems, including tropical depression, tropical storm and hurricane .

Here's the latest update from the NHC as of  2 p.m. July 30 as forecasters track the system:

Tropical wave could become tropical depression later this week

A large tropical wave centered several hundred miles east of the Lesser Antilles is producing limited shower activity due to environmental dry air.

➤ Excessive rainfall forecast

Conditions are forecast to become a little more conducive for development over the warmer waters of thesouthwestern Atlantic Ocean, and a tropical depression could form late this week while the system is in the vicinity of the Greater Antilles or the Bahamas.

Residents in the Greater Antilles, the Bahamas, and the southeastern U.S. should monitor the progress of this system.

  • Formation chance through 48 hours: low, near 0 percent.
  • Formation chance through 7 days: medium, 60 percent.

Storm tracker: Monitor tropical wave as it moves toward Florida

What impact can florida expect from tropical wave.

Several factors are in play that will influence whether the tropical wave strengthens and where it will go, according to AccuWeather. Bottom line: Residents in the Caribbean and U.S. should watch it closely and be prepared.

The tropical wave currently is battling dry air and wind shear as it moves west. Both help prevent development or strengthening of tropical systems. That will change toward the end of the week in August, which typically begins the busier portion of the Atlantic hurricane season.

""Toward the end of this week, the wave will move into an area with fairly low shear and ample moisture, and that could allow some organization and strengthening," said   AccuWeather  Lead Hurricane Expert Alex DaSilva.

And then there's a "ripple." As the tropical wave "interacts with another ripple in the atmosphere early this week," the two could combine into a single low-pressure area, AccuWeather said.

"Exactly how these two interact and where they re-form as a single storm may determine the future path near the Caribbean this week and perhaps the U.S. beyond," AccuWeather forecasters said.

Two scenarios mentioned by AccuWeather that could affect the U.S. include:

  • If the storm tracks north of the big islands in the northern Caribbean later this week, it would more likely be a concern for the East Coast of the U.S.
  • If the storm tracks just south of the big islands, it may be more concerning for the U.S Gulf Coast .

Yet another factor on where the tropical wave could go is a system of high pressure over the Central Atlantic currently moving it to the west. By the weekend and early next week, "steering winds should turn the tropical feature to the northwest or north near the U.S.," AccuWeather said.

"Everyone from the northern Caribbean to the Bahamas and from the U.S. Gulf Coast to the Carolinas will have to watch this tropical feature closely," AccuWeather forecasters said.

What does the colored area on the NOAA map mean?

The striped areas on a tropical outlook map indicate "areas where a tropical cyclone — which could be a tropical depression, tropical storm or hurricane — could develop," said National Hurricane Center Deputy Director Jamie Rhome.

The colors make it visibly clear how likely a system could develop, with yellow being low, orange medium and red high.

The National Hurricane Center generally doesn't issue tropical advisories until a there is a named storm, but there is an exception.

"If a system is near land and there is potential for development, the National Hurricane Center won't wait before it issues advisories, even if the system hasn't become an actual storm. This gives residents time to prepare," Rhome said.

Who is likely to be impacted?

It's too early at this time to determine if there will be any impact to Florida or the U.S. from the tropical wave, although no matter where it goes, expect surf and seas to build well in advance of it it along with dangerous rip currents, AccuWeather said.

Forecasters urge all residents to continue monitoring the tropics and to always be prepared. That advice is particularly important for what is expected to be a very active hurricane season.

Weather watches and warnings issued in Florida

When is the atlantic hurricane season.

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 through Nov. 30.

When is the peak of hurricane season?

The peak of the season is Sept. 10, with the most activity happening between mid-August and mid-October, according to the Hurricane Center.

How to Get to Rome from the Rome Cruise Terminal (and vice versa)

cruise center romandie

Rome – Rome Cruise Terminal by Bus There are buses that have regular service between Rome and the port entrance at Civitavecchia. There are two bus companies that operate on the Rome-Civitavecchia route – CO.TRA.L., which runs what are called “extra urban” buses (meaning they’re not just limited to one city center), and a more localized service. The CO.TRA.L. company’s route includes several Civitavecchia stops, but the one you want is at the Piazza Vittorio Emanuele. It’s not far from the Forte Michelangelo, near the southern entrance to the port itself (it’s closer to the port than the train station). This is the terminus for the bus that then proceeds to Rome, and on this PDF of the CO.TRA.L. schedule (which you can use to find departure times) it’s listed as “CIVITAVECCHIA Dep. COTRAL.” The bus stop in Rome is called Roma Cornelia, which is right on a Metro stop for line A (which is a good thing, because the stop itself isn’t very close to central Rome). The Cornelia stop is actually only four stops from the Vatican Metro stop, so if you’re planning a trip to see St. Peter’s you may be able to do that first. The trip between Civitavecchia and Rome by CO.TRA.L. bus is about 1 hour and 45 minutes, and a one-way ticket (which is priced based on the distance you’re covering) is in the €3-4 range. As mentioned, there are more localized city buses you can take to get from Civitavecchia into Rome – or Rome into Civitavecchia – but it’s going to be much slower and a little more complicated to figure out. If you’re working on a novel about writing buses in Italy, however, it may be ideal. You’ll find the bus timetable for six different bus lines to choose from on this page . Rome – Rome Cruise Terminal by Private Shuttle or Taxi You can hire a private shuttle van or a taxi to get back and forth between the Rome cruise port in Civitavecchia and central Rome, but it’s an expensive proposition. Private vans can be €450-500 or more, and even if you pack it with people it’s still more expensive than if you took a train. Not only that, traffic in and out of Rome is often quite bad, which can make what should be a one-hour one-way trip much longer (thereby robbing you of time in Rome). If you’d still like to hire a private shuttle I’d recommend talking to the cruise director on your ship.

Tom Cruise Olympics Closing Ceremony Stunt

As Los Angeles prepares for the Olympic handover during the August 11 Closing Ceremony in Paris, plans are afoot for Tom Cruise to make a major appearance.

Already a presence at the Opening Ceremony and at some competitions, the Mission: Impossible star will be dropping in — literally — when the Olympic flag is handed over the 2028 games host city , source close to events have told Deadline.

Nearly 29 million tuned in for the Paris Opening Ceremony on July 26, according to Nielsen and Adobe Analytics. That’s   up by more than 60% from the pandemic-delayed 2021 Tokyo Olympics , which netted a mere 17 million viewers across NBC platforms as it took place in empty stadiums.

Chaired by Casey Wasserman , the 2028 Summer Olympics will run July 14-30 in Los Angeles, which also hosted the Games in 1932 and 1984. The city likely will kick off the Games of the XXXIV Olympiad at a venue built for the 1932 event: the Coliseum. It will be part of what LA28 organizers are calling the Downtown Sports Park, a collection of venues that includes Crypto.com Arena, the Convention Center, the BMO Stadium, USC’s Galen Center and the Peacock Theater.

Complete Guide to Cruising from the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach

While they would never be mistaken with the world’s most popular cruise ports like Miami and Fort Lauderdale, Los Angeles and Long Beach are still heavily trafficked cruise ports.

Long Beach cruise terminal with Carnival ship

Hundreds of thousands of passengers each year sail from the Port of Los Angeles and the Long Beach Cruise Terminal.

Today, you can have your choice of cruise lines in the area, from Carnival to Princess to Norwegian to Royal Caribbean. Meanwhile, itineraries have expanded beyond simply the well-known Mexican Riviera trips to include coastal California cruises, trips through the Panama Canal, and even cruises to Hawaii and Canada.

Los Angeles & Long Beach Cruise Port Locations

Both ports are located just a few miles of each other, with one in San Pedro and the other in Long Beach.

If you’re unfamiliar with the area, these cities are both part of the greater Los Angeles area and are about 20 miles south of downtown LA. If flying in for your cruise, expect the trip from Los Angeles International (LAX) to take at least 30 minutes and possibly more due to traffic.

Which port you cruise from will depend on which cruise line you sail. To help you find your way, we’ve covered each port in detail below.

Sailing From the World Cruise Center (Port of Los Angeles)

The Port of Los Angeles is the busier of the two ports. A number of lines, including Princess, Norwegian, Royal Caribbean and Celebrity depart from the port.

The port features three berths (91-93). Expect it to take about 30 minutes to an hour to get to the port from the Los Angeles International Airport.

Los Angeles cruise berths

Getting to the Port of Los Angeles (World Cruise Center)

Southern California is known for its car culture. It shouldn’t be a surprise, then, that the most convenient way to get to the cruise ship is to drive (if you’re in the area and have a car) or take an Uber/Lyft. These services provide access from all major airports in the area. And you can be picked up anywhere else in the area to get to the ship on your own schedule.

Expect the ride to cost at least $50 for a car from LAX to the cruise port. Higher rates will apply if going a longer distance or during peak times.

Estimated ride times from major points of interest are below:

  • Los Angeles International (LAX): 30 min
  • Long Beach Airport (LBG): 25 min
  • John Wayne Airport (SNA): 45 min
  • Downtown: 40 min

You can read more about all your options on getting to the ship (including shuttles) and pricing on our Los Angeles cruise transportation page .

Parking at World Cruise Center

Of course, if you live in the area — as millions do — then you may be interested in simply driving and parking at the port.

The good news is that there is ample parking right at the port. You can park practically at the terminal and walk right in. While the convenience is nice, it does come at a cost. Rates are $20 per day for most vehicles. So over the course of a weeklong cruise, you can expect to spend $140.

For more details on parking, see our Los Angles cruise parking page here .

Want to park cheaper? If you are traveling from farther away and plan to stay at a hotel in the area, then look for a hotel with a park and cruise package. With these deals you can get your hotel and have parking (and often a shuttle) included.

See our list of Los Angles cruise hotels with parking deals .

Due to the location of the port, there aren’t any independent parking lots nearby that we know of.

Where to Stay for a Los Angeles Cruise

Flying into Los Angeles for a cruise? It’s always a good idea to plan to arrive into the city the day before. That way if there are any delays, you aren’t scrambling to make it to the port — or have any worry about missing the ship.

So where should you stay? The area around the port (San Pedro) offers a number of hotels within just 1-3 miles of the ships. This includes some right on the waterfront and some that offer a shuttle service to get guests to the cruise terminal.

You can see a list of nearby hotels to the World Cruise Center here .

Sailing From the Long Beach Cruise Terminal

Los Angeles — while far from being the biggest cruise departure port in the country — offers two different cruise ports. The Long Beach terminal is a short distance from the Port of Los Angeles (about 15 minutes via car). It serves Carnival Cruise Lines, which primarily sails shorter trips to the Mexican Riviera.

The terminal here is one of the most unique in the country as it is a large dome. It used to house the famous Spruce Goose and also served as a soundstage for Hollywood movies. Today, it holds passengers as they prepare to board the ship.

Visitors will also recognize the historic Queen Mary, which is docked permanently at the port. As with the Port of Los Angeles, expect it to take about 30-45 minutes to get to the cruise port from the LAX airport, depending on traffic. If flying in, Long Beach Airport is much closer, reducing travel time.

Port of Long Beach

Getting to the Long Beach Cruise Port

As with the World Cruise Center in San Pedro, your best bet for getting to the port if you need transportation is with an Uber or Lyft. These services are widely available, including offering rides from the major airports.

Prices will vary depending on where you are coming from. For reference, you can expect to spend around $60 for a ride from Los Angeles International to the Long Beach cruise port. Prices will vary based on traffic.

Here are some estimated commute times from certain points:

  • Los Angeles International (LAX): 30-40 min
  • Long Beach Airport (LBG): 15 min
  • John Wayne Airport (SNA): 35 min
  • Downtown: 45 min

You can read more about all your options on getting to the ship and pricing on our Long Beach cruise transportation page .

Parking at the Long Beach Cruise Terminal

For many people, they don’t have to worry about a ride to the port. Roughly 20 million people live in the greater Los Angeles area that includes Long Beach. That means many people are able to simply drive to the cruise ship.

Of course, if you are driving, then you will need a spot to park. The port offers ample parking in a garage that’s right next to the terminal. However, that convenience comes at a cost. The port charges $23 per day for parking. Over the course of a weeklong cruise, expect to spend upwards of $160.

For all the details on parking, see our Long Beach cruise parking page here .

There are also hotels in the area that offer cruise parking for guests. Stay a night and you can leave your car while you sail — for a reduced cost versus parking at the port. If you plan on staying in a hotel the night before your cruise, this deal can save you a nice chunk of change.

See our list of Long Beach cruise hotels with parking deals .

Where to Stay for a Long Beach Cruise

Flying into the area before your cruise? Or maybe you want to be able to relax before you sail, instead of having to drive to the cruise ship on the morning of your trip? No matter the reason, Long Beach offers a number of hotels that are within just a short distance of the terminal.

As well, the terminal is right across from the city of Long Beach itself. That provides a lot to do right near the ship. For example, you can stay the night before, visit the Aquarium of the Pacific or The Pike (an outdoor shopping mall with restaurants and entertainment options), or even spend some time on the beach.

The good news is there are plenty of options within just a few minutes of the port. You can see a list and details of nearby hotels to the Long Beach cruise port here .

Move. Stay. Experience.

After the year 2021 without visiting my sister Florence in Zug in Switzerland , I finally returned to the Confoederatio Helvetica in March 2022. I stayed over a week. More than a family visit, I organised an excursion to French-speaking Switzerland, also known as Romandy , to visit Maxime and the vineyards of Lavaux in the canton of Vaud , near Lausanne . I also booked a journey on the world-famous Glacier Express from Sankt Moritz to Brig . Furthermore, I looked for a nice way in and out. The ÖBB Nightjet night train from Amsterdam to Zurich and the voyage home via Lyon in France .

cruise center romandie

A week in Switzerland for my sister offered opportunities for excursions further away. As I hadn’t really explored Romandy yet beyond the GoldenPass Line and my youth skiing in Anzère in the canton of Valais ( Wallis ). And Maxime works from Lausanne, I decided to go there. Also, it’s near the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Lavaux .

But what is Romandy?

Romandy, in French Romandie or Suisse romande is the French-speaking part of western Switzerland. In 2018, about 2.1 million people, or 25.1% of the Swiss population, lived in Romandy.

The majority of the romand population lives in the western part of the country, especially the Arc lémanique region along Lake Geneva , connecting Geneva , Vaud and the Lower Valais.

French is the sole official language in four Swiss cantons: Geneva, Vaud, Neuchâtel , and Jura . Additionally, French and German have co-official status in three cantons: Fribourg / Freiburg , Valais / Wallis, and Berne / Bern .

Romandy is not an official territorial division of Switzerland any more than there is a clear linguistic boundary. For instance, substantial parts of the canton of Fribourg and the western canton of Bern are traditionally bilingual, most prominently in Seeland around the lakes of Morat , Neuchâtel and Biel / Bienne .

cruise center romandie

Röstigraben

The linguistic boundary between French and German is known as Röstigraben . Literally the Rösti Ditch, named after the fried potato dish. The term is humorous in origin and refers both to the geographic division and to perceived cultural differences between the Romandy and the German-speaking Swiss majority. The term can be traced to the World War I period, but it entered mainstream usage in the 1970s in the context of the Jurassic separatism virulent at the time. The Canton of Jura seceded from Bern in 1979.

Differences are largely cliché and stereotypes, yet so prominent these stereotypes become somewhat true. The Romands are given Latin stereotypes of being lazy, counting more on the government for life issues and more festive. The Deutschschweizer are given stereotypical German and Northern European characteristics such being strict, working too hard and being maniacally clean.

In French-speaking Europe, the ‘ Leçon de géographie suisse ‘ by Marie-Thérèse Porchet , a.k.a. Joseph Gorgoni , is very famous for making fun of the Bourbines , a pejorative term for the German-Swiss.

This piece of Swissinfo delves into the Röstigraben .

Depart Civitavecchia pier and head to Rome by motorcoach.

In the Eternal City, a  panoramic drive  takes you through the lovely Borghese Gardens and along Via Veneto -- Rome's famous, elegant, and outrageously expensive shopping street. A slice of Roman life takes place among the fashionable sidewalk cafés, luxury shops and up-market hotels here.

Drive past the Colosseum and Circus Maximus, immortalized in Ben Hur. This is where chariot races took place in Roman times. You'll also see Palatine Hill with the residence of Roman Emperors.

Passing through St Paul's Gate, watch for the Pyramid of Caius Cestius nearby.

Continue along the old Ostiense Way to St Paul's Basilica, where you will have some free time for an inside visit. Finally, you’ll stop at a central location where you will leave the coach with your luggage and continue independently to your next destination.

Modest attire is required if you plan to enter any religious sites during your free time: knees, shoulders, and midriffs must be covered.  Shorts are not allowed.  Wear comfortable walking shoes.

In preparation for the 2025 Jubilee, the restoration work has begun on the ‘Baldacchino’ over the main altar of St. Peter’s Basilica, hiding Bernini’s Baldachin. This is expected to last until 2025.

Best Cruise Line For Romance

Cruise Critic

It could be exploring a faraway land or taking in a sunset from your balcony. Dancing the night away in a cozy lounge or enjoying an intimate meal and conversation in an elegant restaurant. Your favorite moment with your soulmate could be anything – or everything – when you choose the “Best Cruise Line for Romance.”*

Romantic Cruise Destinations

Let a getaway get you closer. And come back more in love than ever… when you sail with Princess to the world’s most romantic locales.

The Caribbean: treasure your time together

Turquoise waters, swaying palms, secluded white-sand beaches: this is bliss. It’s no wonder the Caribbean is our top destination for weddings, honeymooners and couples just craving an escape. With over 30 island ports to choose from, the two of you can sightsee, snorkel, shop… or, yes, just lounge side-by-side. Because sometimes the most romantic thing you can do together is nothing at all.

The Mediterranean: timeless places, priceless moments

Where will you write the next chapters of your love story? Swimming Corfu’s sparkling waters; cozied up in a Venetian gondola; people-watching in a Paris café; biking the Tuscan hills; or strolling the streets of Rome? Let the destination experts take you to these enchanting settings. You two can take it from there. When you share the world with the one you love, you create memories to share forever.

Hawaii: Paradise found

It’s just the two of you – discovering a hidden waterfall, strolling a black-sand beach under a scarlet sunset, gazing up at a billion gleaming stars. You’re not dreaming. You’re in Maui or Kauai on a relaxing, romantic Princess vacation. Lose yourselves in the natural wonders of Hawaii and you’ll find the true meaning of Paradise: experiencing the perfect place with that special person.

Experiences to Share

Revel in your time together – try something new, explore somewhere extraordinary or simply relax and reconnect.

Entertainment you'll love

See how it takes two to tango in a ballroom dance class. Request the song you call yours from the live band. Test how well you know each other in the Marriage Match Game Show. Get on the Kiss Cam at the Love Boat Disco Deck Party. Learn how to say “I love you” in a different language. Opportunities to bond are everywhere.

A passion for great food

Apologies to Shakespeare, but food is the food of love. Imagine Valentine’s Day without chocolate, or a date without Champagne. Not here. Savor a romantic dinner for two at one of our specialty restaurants or on your private balcony. Sweeten the deal with a chocolate and wine tasting. Play, or rather, eat on!

Romantic escapades

Ride a horse-drawn carriage through Tuscan vineyards. Share a picnic lunch after visiting an active volcano on the Big Island of Hawaii. Surround yourself with beauty in bloom at the Butchart Gardens in Victoria. Rediscover your sense of wonder and why you fell in love in the first place on award-winning excursions.

Relax on the best cruise for couples

Leave the hustle and bustle behind in the  Lotus Spa® , your haven away from home. Indulge in a couples’ massage. Primp for formal night — or just a night out — with any of our special salon services. Make the most of days free of obligation, where the only item on your to-do list is enjoying spending time together.

Occasions to Celebrate

Relationship milestones are always worth commemorating, and here you’ll find them treated with the fanfare they deserve.

An Anniversary to remember

Reflect on the road you’ve traveled together in quiet moments and larger-than-life adventures. It’s easy at sea, when you have the time and space to focus on one another. Anniversaries are the most popular reason our guests sail, so we make sure they get their due, offering packages that add a festive touch. Better yet, renew your vows in a personalized ceremony on board.

Princess® perfect weddings (and more to love)

As The Love Boat®, we're all about romance. Come aboard for a wedding ceremony or vow renewal, performed by your ship’s captain! You can't beat the cost and convenience — we handle every detail for much less than land-based venues — or the views.

Embarking on adventure together

Pop the question with a Princess® Perfect Proposal package that makes sure it all goes without a hitch (except the one you want). Planning your honeymoon? The sea is the limit with more than 250 itineraries to 330 destinations.

See the options for your proposal and your honeymoon as well as other romance packages

The joy of the holidays

Sing “Auld Lang Syne” as balloons drop on a New Year’s sailing that kicks off the new year in style. Make this the best Valentine’s Day ever on “The Love Boat,” enjoying events and activities you won’t find anywhere else. When every day is like a holiday, special celebrations occur on an even grander scale.

Cruise to Constanta, Romania

Constanta shore excursions, amazing experiences coming soon., sorry, there are no excursions for this port at this moment., things to do in constanta.

Have a bright, sunny day at the Black Sea.

Sun Yourself at the Black Sea

Have a bright, sunny day at the Black Sea.

Stay in town at beaches like Modern Beach or Vega Beach and make a beeline for the waters of Romania's Black Sea, which are anything but dark and gloomy. Spread out a towel and soak up the sun, or dip your toes into the calm surf. Then, take a taxi to Plaja Eforie Norda. It's a bit outside the city but boasts a longer, wider beach with plenty of umbrellas and great people-watching.

Constanta's Museum of Natural History.

Dive Into History and Nature

Constanta's Museum of Natural History.

Make your way to Piata Ovidiu, a lively public square where you'll also find the Museum of Natural History and Archaeology and the regal 19th-century building that houses it. Soak in exhibitions on history both recent and ancient, then visit the Dolphinarium at the Natural Sciences Museum. Watch Constanta's cutest residents swim and play around, and learn about the importance of dolphins within the Black Sea ecosystem.

Imagine yourself in a bygone era when you walk past Constanta Casino.

Travel Back in Time

Dig deeper into Constanta's past at the Roman Mosaic Floors, located just a short walk from Piata Ovidiu. Take a walk around the defunct Constanta Casino, whose elaborate 19th-century facade honors the glamour of days gone by. Or visit Carol I Mosque, which was also built in the late 19th-century and remains an important place of worship for the Muslims who call Constanta home today.

Browse traditional crafts such as Bucovina painted eggs.

LOCAL CUISINE

Tear into fresh-caught seafood straight from the Black Sea: a filet of tuna or herring, a succulent octopus tentacle or rapana, a Black Sea mollusk typically served fried or grilled — there's nothing else like it. Or, sit down for more traditional Romanian dishes, be they savory ones like sarmale cabbage rolls filled with ground meat, or sweet amandine, a chocolate cake filled with creamy almond paste.

Taste the Black Sea with a plate of delicious rapana, a delectable Black Sea shellfish.

Enjoy your retail alongside locals and fellow travelers as you shop in modern Constanta malls such as City Park Mall and VIVO! Constanta. Or, get a taste of traditional Romanian craftsmanship at small local stalls situated around Piata Ovidiu, where you can browse Bucovina, traditional painted eggs that will have you dreaming of adventure in the mountains of Transylvania.
