Small beach towns are what put Costa Rica on the map. These secluded, often hard to get to, communities are the perfect place for visitors to come and escape. And one of the best is Nosara!
Nosara, Costa Rica is located on the Nicoya Peninsula , and over the years the town has changed from an off-the-beaten-path surf break to a bustling tourist town a little more bougie these days than hippy.
Of course, this won’t suit everyone. I mean, the cost of staying in Nosara is undoubtedly not cheap. However, with epic surf almost all year round and a safe environment for visitors, Nosara is a top destination in Costa Rica for surfers , families, couples, groups, and well, everyone!
To help plan your upcoming visit to Nosara, here are all the best things to do in Nosara, as well as other info you need to know before you go!
Don’t have time to read the full article? Check out our list of absolute favorite things to do in Nosara.
- Soak up the sunset on the beach.
- Learn to surf with a private lesson at Guiones Beach .
- Try the brunch at Destiny Cafe.
- Spot the anteaters, iguanas, and other wildlife at Nosara Biological Reserve.
- Explore the area via horseback .
Things to do in Nosara
1. enjoy stunning beach sunsets.
During your stay, you’ll notice the town gets really quiet in the afternoon. This is your cue to grab your things, a few drinks, your camera, and head to the beach.
At sunset, the beach in Nosara is lined with visitors and locals who come to watch the sunset and the talented surfers. It’s without a doubt the best time to be on the beach!
Come down an hour before sunset and find a spot on the beach. Then, with a drink in hand you can relax, laugh, and just soak up the moment. Or, go for a swim/surf!
The busiest section of the beach is to the north, out the front of Nosara Beach Villas. To avoid the crowds, head south towards Baker’s Beach Entrance .
2. Surf, surf, and surf some more
The number one reason people started coming to Nosara in the first place was because of the beach breaks at Guiones Beach . There are both left and right waves on Guiones, and with 7 kilometers (4.3 miles) of beach, there’s plenty of space for everyone.
There are waves to surf all year round. However, the best time to surf in Nosara is from March to November. This also happens to be the low season, so avid surfers enjoy the lower prices and lack of people.
Intermediate to advanced surfers can either bring their own board or rent them in town for around $15 USD to $20 USD per day for a high-performance board. There are also weekly rentals available if you’re staying a while.
If you’re a new or inexperienced surfer, it’s best to do a lesson in Nosara. The swells here can be large, and having a guide with you, at least on your first time, is a great idea. As you can imagine, the town is filled with surf schools.
Agua Tibia Surf School is a great school for beginners. They have some of the best instructors in town, especially if you get Dany! The only negative is their location in South Nosara. If you want a good surf school closer to North Nosara, Nosara CR Surf School is another top-rated school.
You can also opt to book this 1-hour private surf lesson online that comes highly rated.
I also feel compelled to let newcomers know about the stingrays at Guiones Beach. Although getting stung is rare and not deadly, they do happen. You can easily avoid this by walking into the water with a “ski shuffle.” This prevents you from accidentally stepping on one (the only reason you’ll get stung) and lets them know you are nearby.
Certain times of the year are worse than others, but December 2021 was particularly a bad year. Although painful, you can quickly treat the affected area with hot water (which kills the venom) and then visit the local doctor just in case.

3. Go see the turtles at Playa del Ostional
Playa del Ostional is home to one of the most amazing wildlife phenomena in Costa Rica. An arribada, as it’s called, is when hundreds of turtles come to shore to dig and lay their eggs on a beach at once. The event happens in the rainy season, around one week before a new moon.
Visitors to Nosara can join tours to the reserve for around $60 USD. These leave very early in the morning or after dark and visit the beach during the arribada. You can literally see hundreds, if not thousands, of turtles all at once. It’s one of the best experiences in Costa Rica !
We missed the turtles laying eggs by two days during our most recent visit. However, we did get to see babies hatch and walk to the ocean. Most tour companies will tell you there is no point going when the adult turtles aren’t there, but we insisted because even seeing the babies is a great experience too!
There are lots of tour companies in town that sell group tours to Ostional Beach for $60 USD per person. However, these tours pretty much only include transport to and from the beach. If this is what you want to do, book when you arrive.
However, if you want to learn (in-depth) about the turtles and the arribada, book your tour with the Wildlife Conservation Association . Their tour involves talking with an expert about the phenomena, transport, and a guided tour on the beach. There is a $150 USD flat fee and an additional charge of $35 USD per person but is the best experience available.
4. Coffee and brunch at Destiny Cafe
For most, mornings in Nosara will begin with either an early morning surf or a slow start after a few too many drinks. Regardless, the best place to refuel for the day ahead is at Destiny Cafe .
Destiny Cafe serves up delicious breakfast and brunch meals with local ingredients and unique twists. It’s all the food you drool over on Instagram that you never know where to find.
I loved the Destiny Eggs Nest (pictured above), which was spiraled sweet potato with poached eggs and hollandaise sauce! Bailey’s go-to was the Truffle Avo Toast or the eggs benny. However, everything looked amazing. They also have delicious shakes, smoothie bowls, juices, and coffee.
If you plan on going around brunch, you won’t be the only one. There is often a line out the door at Destiny Cafe, so if you can, go early. With that said, the service is excellent, and you usually don’t have to wait longer than 10 or 15 minutes. As you see all the delicious food come out though, this can feel like a lifetime!
5. Explore other beaches around Nosara
Guiones Beach is the most popular beach in Nosara and one of the best in Costa Rica , but there are other beaches to explore nearby. Some even have their own unique features that you need to check out.
The first is Playa Pelada which sits to the north of Guiones Beach. This is my favorite beach to enjoy a walk along because there is a lot more to see. For example, there are tidal pools to the north of the beach and a blowhole to the south that shoots water into the air and makes a lot of noise.
The ocean currents can be strong at Playa Pelada, but a lifeguard tower watches Playa Pelada and Nosara. There are also some great places to enjoy a meal or drink at Playa Pelada that have ocean views. Olga’s Beach Bar is one, and it’s not badly priced for its location. My favorite, though, is next on this list!
Further to the north is Playa Nosara . This beach is often completely empty, and even surfers tend to stay away.
To the south, you have some small beaches that you can walk to at low tide. Playa Rosada is an absolutely gorgeous beach about 40 minutes walking from the tourist area of Nosara. You can reach the beach around low tide, but be sure to leave before the tide comes in again. This beach is also known as Pink Beach as the sand is a light hue of pink (more on that on number 21 in this blog.)
Slightly further is Playa Cuarzo , which is home to the best tide pools (at low tide) in the area.
You can go even further south if you have a car and check out Playa Garza . A reef protects this beach, so it’s the best place to swim in the area. There’s a small town here with some local restaurants and shops. It’s certainly a lot different from the vibe in Nosara.
Related Read: Another great beach town nearby is Samara! The beach here is calmer, perfect for swimming and relaxing, and there are plenty of things to do in Samara .
6. Sunset dinner or drinks at La Luna
If you’re looking for an amazing place to enjoy a meal or sunset drink in Nosara, look no further than La Luna . The restaurant has an oceanfront location on the south end of Playa Pelada that’s stunning! La Luna also has amazing decor that’s luxurious but simple.
Of course, the main reason you’re coming to dinner is to enjoy delicious food, in fact, La Luna is one of the best restaurants in Nosara . Thankfully, La Luna serves top-notch food from falafel, seafood, tacos, pizza, ceviche, and more. To go along with your meal, try some of the cocktails. My favorite is the passion mojito!
Prices at La Luna are reasonable for the service and quality. Expect to pay around $25 USD for a main and $6 to $7 USD for a cocktail. If you want to visit for a sunset dinner, be sure to book in advance on their Facebook page or via phone.
7. Hike through Nosara Biological Reserve
Nosara Biological Reserve is a small nature reserve owned and protected by the Lagrata Lodge on the north end of town near Nosara Beach. The area is home to lots of wildlife, and bordering the reserve is the Rio Nosara which provides the ideal habitat for wildlife to thrive. The entire protected area is just under 90 acres, and trails navigate the whole reserve.
A visit to Nosara Biological Reserve costs $6 USD for nonguests of the hotel, and for hotel guests, it’s free. For that, you get a map of the trails and information about the reserve. They also have an option for a guided tour which costs extra depending on group size.
You can see hundreds of species of wildlife along the trails, including howler monkies, anteaters, iguanas, and armadillos. The best time to visit is early in the morning when the majority of the wildlife is most active. It’s also a cooler time of the day!
8. Drink craft beer at Guiones Brew Co.
I was so excited when Guiones Brew Co. opened in Nosara. I just love craft beer, and it’s the one thing Nosara was missing. Although they usually only have a few beers on tap, what they do, they do well.
Of course, my favorite is the IPA, but they also have a tasty Pale Ale. Guiones Brew Co. is known for its wood-fired pizzas too. They only cost $12 USD and are full of flavor – perfect with a craft beer.
Guiones Brew Co. opens at 4 pm. However, nothing really happens until 5 pm (Pura Vida), so don’t expect to order food much before then. You can sit at the bar, which has limited seating without a booking. But if you want a table during the busy season, it’s best to book in advance.
9. Stretch out at yoga
Yoga is synonymous with Nosara and is one of the best things to do. Known as a health and wellness hub, yoga studios are dotted all over Nosara. There is a range of programs, from drop-in classes to full-on yoga retreats and even yoga courses.
Nalu Studio is an excellent option if you’re just a part-time yogi like myself. They have regularly scheduled community classes almost every day. They also have breathwork, meditation, and fitness classes. All classes cost $20 USD cash for drop-ins.
If you’re more serious about yoga, Bodhi Tree Yoga Resort offers regular yoga retreats that last for a week. They certainly aren’t cheap, but they include your lodging, three meals a day, and 2 to 3 yoga sessions per day. They also have daily classes open to the public
Regardless of your experience or passion for yoga, you can find a class in Nosara to suit your needs!
10. Zipline/canopy tour
When it comes to exploring Nosara, most people think of the beaches. But, what about the mountains? On a canopy tour, you’ll get to see Nosara from above and explore the dense jungle that occupies the mountainsides.
The most popular tour in Nosara is the canopy tour with Miss Sky . Their canopy tour is the longest in the world at 11 kilometers (6.8 miles). You’ll do 21 ziplines on the tour that are on average 500 meters (1,640 feet) long. The tour also includes a stop at a waterfall and finishes with a zipline into a five-story building.
If you’re going to do a canopy tour in Costa Rica , do it in Nosara, Costa Rica.

11. Mala Noche Waterfall Tour
While on the topic of the mountains, let’s talk about Mala Noche Waterfall! This refreshing waterfall is located within the mountains of Nosara and is the perfect place to cool off.
The best way to explore Mala Noche is with Monkey Quads on their ATV tour. You’ll ride up through the mountains and to the waterfall before jumping from the falls and cooling off in the pool below. It’s a fun way to spend the day!
Monkey Quads also rent ATVs so you can also just rent an ATV for the day and explore the waterfall on your own. Just ask them for directions and a map because the waterfall is not on Google Maps.
12. Horseback riding
Horseback is without a doubt one of the most popular things to do in Nosara. The entire area is filled with trails used to navigate the mountains, rivers, and dense jungle. In fact, many of the small coastal villages in Costa Rica began as farming towns, and horses played an essential role in that.
On this horseback riding tour , you’ll head off with your newfound friend and explore the area for 1 hour. Along the way, you’ll cross rivers, spot monkeys, and even take the horses for a shower afterward.
It’s a fun and exciting experience, and they even have ponies for kids as well as all the safety gear required. Most importantly, you’ll ride horses who are really well cared for and groomed.
Unfortunately due to Bailey’s extreme allergies, we don’t usually go horseback riding. It’s actually scary when her skin flares up!
13. Walk up to Mirador Hermosa Nosara
While exploring Nosara, I stumbled upon a viewpoint that lies between Playa Guiones and Playa Pelada. Called Mirador Hermosa Nosara , the short but steep walk up the cliff at sunset makes for a great place to relax and enjoy the views.
You can easily reach the viewpoint from town simply by walking to Playa Guiones and walking as far north along the beach until a huge rock wall greets you. Once there, you’ll be able to spot the steep pathway to the top.
Please be aware that the trail to the top is steep, and there is a cliff face on the other side. So, this is not suited to those with mobility issues or kids.
14. Rent a golf buggy
One of the best ways to get around Nosara is in a golf buggy. Although Nosara is a small town, you still need to do a lot of walking along dusty roads. So to save time and do something fun, people rent golf buggies for their stay.
Unfortunately for us, we never plan ahead enough and always miss out on a rental – they are that popular. However, if you’re currently planning your trip, you can rent gold buggies from Nosara Paradise Rentals , Nosara Prime , Limo Dan , and more.
A rental starts at $65 USD per day for a four-person golf buggy. They also have weekly prices of $50 USD per day. As I mentioned above, you need to book in advance during the busy season as golf buggies are very popular.
15. Have a pool day at Selina
The Selina Hostel in Nosara is one of the nicest hostels in the world. Rumor has it the property used to be a 5-star resort that closed down, and now it’s Costa Rica’s most popular (and expensive) hostel. We didn’t stay at the Selina simply because the price for a room was a bit lofty for our taste but we did visit to use the pools for the day.
A day pass at Selina costs $20 USD, and because it’s a hostel, it’s a pretty lively place to hang out and relax. Grab yourself some drinks from the bar, splash in the pool, or just relax and enjoy the sunshine. A day at Selina is a really fun time!
16. Stay in a luxury hotel or villa in the jungle
One of the things I love about Nosara is the ability to disappear into the mountains and become completely surrounded by nature. The best part is you don’t have to sacrifice comfort to do so.
A few hotels in Nosara are surrounded by dense jungle with magnificent ocean views. So, why not split your time between the beach and the jungle and book a few nights away from the beach?
Tierra Magnifica Boutique Hotel is my top choice when it comes to jungle getaways. The hotel is absolutely gorgeous, and the views are unmatched. Relax in the pool or pamper yourself at the spa – regardless, you’ll love your stay here.
If you’re traveling with a larger group and want more privacy, Villa Gullwing is a great option. This Airbnb-style home can sleep up to nine people, has a private pool, and has ocean views.
Don’t worry if you’re on a budget either. I have a great option that’s surprisingly cheap! Villa Mango B&B is such a beautiful hotel, and rooms here cost around $110 USD per night (way too cheap!) For that, you get ocean views, a small pool, and an exceptional breakfast included!
17. Visit Pink Sand Beach (Playa Rosada)
One of the more unique things to do in Nosara is this awesome tour out to a beautiful beach by boat. Pink Beach is one of the world’s few pink sand beaches, and tours with Tico Tours Nosara take you there via boat to snorkel, relax in tide pools, and take photos of the pink sand.
I mentioned the beach above (Playa Rosada) as a great place to visit from Nosara. The tour basically takes you there via boat instead of having to walk, and you’ll also get a guide.
The tour is overpriced, in my opinion. I prefer to visit places on my own. However, I understand some don’t want to hassle of worrying about tide times and walking through the heat to the beach.
18. Go boutique shopping
Nosara is filled with small boutique shops that sell clothing you probably wouldn’t expect to see in a small beach town. During our stay, Bailey did a lot of shopping. To be honest, I don’t blame her. Everywhere we went, there was shopping to be done.
In fact, while I enjoyed a craft beer, Bailey shopped at WLDFLWRS , which is connected to the brewery. Some other great places to shop include Love Nosara , and MaderArte . These boutique stores are certainly not cheap, but the quality is high. The best part is, you’ll be able to take something unique home with you!
19. Go snorkeling in San Juanillo Bay
One of the best places to go snorkeling near Nosara is a small bay called San Juanillo Bay. The bay is home to a coral reef home to lots of aquatic life such as pufferfish, turtles, fish, sharks, and eels. The water is known for its great visibility, and tours to the San Juanillo are very popular.
Tico Tours Nosara is one of the more popular companies that run tours to San Juanillo . On an ATV, you’ll drive out to the beach before jumping in the water to explore with your guide. Spot lots of wildlife, enjoy the gorgeous white sand beach, and even sip fresh coconuts.
Overall it’s a great day out that I loved. This is easily one of the best things to do in Nosara. The tour costs $100 USD per person and an extra $50 USD for another person (shared ATV.)
If you want to save money, you can also rent your snorkeling gear in town from The Frog Pad and get a taxi or drive yourself out to the beach. It’s a 35-minute drive.
20. Eat at Gabi’s Place
If you’re traveling with a group who often can’t decide where to eat, then take them to Gabi’s Place . Gabi’s is an open-air food court located in Nosara. There are seven restaurants in Gabi’s, and they cover many different cuisines including vegan, Italian, steak, local Costa Rican, sushi, and seafood.
Head to Soda La Barra for a typical Casado for $5 USD or spoil yourself with a steak at La Brasa. Regardless, even the pickiest of eaters can find something here. Then, bring your meal back to the same table and eat together!
21. Eat vegan food
Nosara is a fantastic place for vegans. Around town, there are many great places to eat vegan food, and even those who usually shy away should give some of these restaurants a try.
One of the most popular vegan restaurants in Nosara is LuvBurger . Their menu is entirely plant-based, and as the name suggests, they have lots of burgers!
Another similar restaurant is Naked Foods . The food here is really good and they have a great mix of bowls, burgers, falafel, and even a “fillet no fish.”
Lastly, try Symbiosis for vegan tacos, burritos, and even pad thai. They’re located in the food court called Gabi’s Place (mentioned above), so even if your friends aren’t vegan, they have other options too!
Where to Stay in Nosara, Costa Rica
Before you decide where to stay in Nosara , let’s clear one thing up. You want to stay near Playa Guiones, not in Nosara. The town of Nosara is not near the beach and is also not where all the best restaurants and shops are. They are all in a small downtown area near the beach. These are a few of our favorite places to stay:
Selina Nosara – $
For budget travelers, stay at Selina Nosara . Although this hostel pushes into the medium-priced category, it’s worth spending the extra money. The hostel has a beautiful pool and tons of free activities every day. This is without a doubt the nicest hostel I have ever seen!
A one-night stay at Selina Nosara begins in the range of $50-100 USD per night depending on when you visit. You can book this hostel on Booking.com , on Expedia , on Hotels.com , or on Hostelworld .
The Sunset Shack – $$
Your options are much better for those with a little more to spend. My top choice is The Sunset Shack for around the $250 USD a night price range. The hotel is perfectly located, close to the beach, and has a pool.
All the rooms have air-conditioning and in-room WiFi. You can also treat yourself to a relaxing time at the hotel’s on-site spa if you need it after a day of hitting the waves at the nearby surf break. Reserve your room here on Booking.com , here on Expedia , and here on Hotels.com .
The Gilded Iguana – $$$
Suppose you’re a luxury traveler. Luckily for you, there are a lot of hotels in this price range in Nosara. The Gilded Iguana is really one of the best if you want a resort-style stay close to the beach with luxury amenities.
All the rooms here include balconies and patios as well as seating areas. You can enjoy entertainment, take a yoga class, or sign up for a spa package all without needing to leave the resort. A one-night stay begins at $450 USD. You can book it on Booking.com here , Expedia here , or Hotels.com here .

Getting Around Costa Rica
How you choose to get around Costa Rica is one of the biggest decisions you’ll make when planning your holiday here! How you do it depends on your budget, travel style, and comfort level.
Renting a Car
Without a doubt, the number one way to explore Costa Rica is in a rental car. We book rental cars on the Discover Cars website as we have had good experiences with them in the past.
One of the things you need to watch for when renting a car in Costa Rica is the mandatory insurance that the government requires you to have. There are a lot of very cheap rentals that don’t include this mandatory insurance (TPL) in the original booking price, but there are also ones that do. To avoid additional surprise charges when you pick up your rental car, be sure to rent a car that includes the mandatory insurance when you book.
Thankfully, on Discover Cars it’s easy to tell apart the companies that include the mandatory insurance and those that don’t. The trick is you can’t pick any car on their website. In the picture below, you can see this rental car, with pick up in Jaco, includes the TPL. That means the mandatory insurance is included in the price. Any cover you get above that is extra.
Of course, I still suggest getting the full coverage offered by Discover Cars, which covers you even more.
You can browse cars on Discover Cars here .
Book Shuttles
If renting a car isn’t in your budget, you don’t feel comfortable driving in Costa Rica , or you just don’t like driving, shuttles are the next best option. There are hundreds of shuttle routes available all over the country, and they are very affordable.
Shuttles in Costa Rica are specifically for tourists and often include pick up and drop off at your selected hotels and airports. The drivers also speak some English, and the vehicles have air conditioning. You’ll also be guaranteed a seat when you book a shuttle (which isn’t the case with the public bus system.)
To get the best price, use the website Bookaway . They compare all the offers and prices of shuttle companies in Costa Rica so you get the best price! Honestly, we have saved so much money using Bookaway!
You can search for shuttles online on Bookaway here.
Lastly, you can use the public bus system. On short journeys, such as from San Jose to La Fortuna or Uvita to Manuel Antonio, this system is great. However, the longer the journey the more hassle and time spent on a bus. It’s undoubtedly best to save the public bus in Costa Rica for short and straightforward trips!
The public buses are definitely the cheapest way to get around Costa Rica, but they are not always very reliable and schedules often change without notice and delays are to be expected. The buses can also be very crowded and hot – so just be prepared!
It’s also good to speak some Spanish if you plan on riding the public bus since most drivers and ticket booth operators don’t speak English.
Wow, what a list of awesome things to do in Nosara, Costa Rica. Honestly, it’s no wonder this is one of the top beach destinations in the country . It’s beautiful!
I hope this guide has helped plan your upcoming stay and you have all the information on activities in Nosara you need! If you do, be sure to check out more of Costa Rica Travel Life – we have so many blogs for you to read including a few favorites:

The Best Things to Do in Nosara, Costa Rica
Helpful travel tips.
Getting to Nosara
Nosara is best reached by flying into San Jose, Liberia Airport. From there, a rental car or transfer will help you get to the town. For the best rental car rates and coverage, I recommend Discover Cars . You could also get there from other major destinations in Costa Rica like Santa Teresa .
If you’re coming from San Jose it might be worth looking into flying into Nosara Airport for a quick and easy transfer across the country.
Many dirt roads in Nosara are not paved, so it’s a good idea to rent a 4×4 if you’re renting a car. In fact, for Costa Rica’s Guanacaste Region , I’d say a 4×4 was necessary. In the rainy season, some roads may become impassable because of fast-flowing rivers that crisscross the roads. Due to the variable conditions, I recommend booking full coverage with Discover Cars .
Getting Around Nosara
Having a vehicle is important in Nosara because it is spread out. This makes it easier to travel between different areas like Nosara town, Playa Guiones, and Playa Pelada. Renting a car at Liberia Airport or in San Jose will allow you to get to Nosara and easily get around. For the best rental car rates and coverage, I recommend Discover Cars . Otherwise, you can rent ATVs or motorbikes in town.
Amount of Time Needed
2-3 days is enough time to make the most of everything the laid-back surf town offers. I’d recommend longer if you want to relax or take a surfing class .
Language, Currency, and Cash
Spanish is the official language in Costa Rica but English is widely spoken. Both Costa Rican Colones and US dollars are accepted by most businesses but you’ll get a much better rate paying in colones.
ATMs are located in Playa Guiones and Nosara but they aren’t too reliable. I’d recommend getting cash before arrival. All major credit cards are accepted in more established businesses.
Where to Stay in Nosara, Costa Rica
In recent years, many swoon-worthy hotels have opened up in Nosara, making the small town one of the most sought-after destinations in Costa Rica. Here are some of my favorite design-forward options:
Sendero Hotel Nosara
Located right on Playa Guiones, Sendero Hotel Nosara has bright, modern, and well-appointed rooms. The property has a pretty pool, a nice yoga space, a juice bar, a great cafe, and a restaurant. Plus, there’s also one of Nosara’s best surf schools on site. Book the best rates here .
The Harmony Hotel
A beautiful boho-chic retreat that celebrates laid-back luxury and style. Rooms are large and bright and there’s also a large communal pool, yoga shala, and healthy cafe. The perfect all-round base for a stay for those looking for one of the best boutique hotels in town. Book the best rates here.
Other Superb Hotel Options to Consider
- Tierra Magnifica Boutique Hotel
- Hotel Boutique Lagarta Lodge
- Gilded Iguana
- The Nomadic Hotel
Where to Eat in Nosara, Costa Rica
Coyol is one of the most unique dining experiences in Nosara that you won’t forget in a hurry. The restaurant is located in a cabin in the hills with views of the ocean and forest. The food here is a mix of Mediterranean and Barbecue with most dishes being grilled, smoked, or roasted. There’s also an unbeatable cocktail menu.
Restaurante La Luna
For high-quality fusion food right on Playa Pelada, head to La Luna . Book a table for sunset, order a cocktail, and don’t miss their fish dishes like grilled fish or fish tacos.
Located inside the Tierra Magnifica Hotel , Huacas is one of the best upscale restaurants in town. The menu is a welcoming take on modern Costa Rican fare and Caribbean cuisine and they do mixology like no one else in town.
Pacifico Azul
Pacifico Azul is the place to go for seafood in Nosara. This family-owned restaurant uses locally sourced seafood and serves it up in true Costa Rican style.
Rosi’s Soda Tica
For the best soda in town, make your way to Rosi’s . There are two locations, one in Playa Pelada and Playa Guiones. Come here for inexpensive local fare like gallo pinto and casado .
Things to Do in Nosara, Costa Rica
As one of Costa Rica’s most popular surf towns, it’s no surprise that surfing is one of the best things to do in Nosara, Costa Rica. Beaches in Nosara, particularly Playa Guiones, are known for their long and sandy shores which get consistent breaks all year round for both beginners and seasoned surfers.
There’s no shortage of surf schools either. Nosara Surf Academy and Cacho’s Surf School are two of the best surf schools in town, where you can receive private or group classes and rent boards. This private surf lesson with Tierra Costa is a good option as well.
If you’re staying at Sendero Nosara you can also book surf tuition directly with them.
If surfing has been on your bucket list for a while or you’ve been looking for an excuse to get back in the water, the breaks in Nosara, Costa Rica are the perfect reason to get your hair wet.
Savor a Sunset
Nosara and the Guanacaste Coast are famous for their sunsets. It’s the time of day when everyone seems to end their workday and head to the beach to catch the sun setting over the ocean.
One of the best things to do in Nosara, Costa Rica is to join the rather community-centered ritual, at least once, during your stay. The most beautiful beaches to watch the sunset are Playa Guiones and Playa Pelada .
I prefer Playa Pelada for sunset where you can also make a reservation at La Luna to enjoy the sunset with a cocktail in hand.
Enjoy Nosara’s Beaches
Nosara’s beaches are at the heart of the town’s culture and ethos and it’s difficult to miss them.
The long and wide palm-fringed beaches with golden sand and clear water are perfect for a stroll or a day of relaxation. Here are some of Nosara’s most popular beaches and what you can expect from them
- Playa Guiones , t he town’s most popular beach best for surfing, relaxing, and walking.
- Playa Pelada , i s a brilliant alternative, but not so great for surfing. It’s perfect for swimming, watching the sunset and relaxing.
- Playa Garza , located 15 minutes down the coast, this is a lovely hidden gem that’s a quieter alternative to Nosara’s beaches.
- Playa Nosara , Nosara town’s main beach is long, wide, and beautiful. This is where you’ll find many of the locals.
Attend a Yoga Retreat or a Yoga Class
Nosara is one of the best places in Costa Rica for yogis. Renowned for its top-notch yoga retreats that easily blend relaxation, spirituality, and nature, rolling out your mat is a must at least once during your stay in Nosara.
Many of Nosara’s best hotels offer daily yoga classes where you can flow before starting your day. If you’re looking for something a little more comprehensive then yoga retreats are also possible.
Some of the best places to attend a yoga retreat in Nosara are Bodhi Tree Yoga Retreat and Blue Spirit Retreat Center just south of Nosara.
Go Horseback Riding on the Beach
Horseback Riding is another popular experience in Nosara not to be missed. It’s a unique way to explore the region’s lush landscapes as you ride through the serene jungles, and rolling hills and along the region’s beaches.
Many local horseback riding tours happen just before sunset where you’ll be able to stroll along the beach and experience the natural beauty of Nosara at its most magical time. This private horseback riding tour to watch the sunset in Nosara is a great option.
Release Turtles into the Sea at Ostional National Wildlife Refuge
For those wanting to learn more about the region’s wildlife, taking some time to visit the Ostional National Wildlife Refuge is a must. Located just up the coast from Nosara, the refuge was originally set up to protect the natural habitat of the Olive Ridley Sea Turtle.
During the rainy season, you might be able to see hundreds of turtles coming to shore to nest or even see baby turtles making their way down to the ocean later in the year.
Ostional Beach is one of the only places in the world where Olive Ridley turtles come to nest on a huge scale so it’s well worth seeking out this unique experience.

These are the sites I use most to book my own trips. Using the links below is a great way to support Bon Traveler’s travel journalism at no extra cost to you . If you need help organizing your itinerary, get my free travel itinerary template here .
1. Book Your Flights
Use Skyscanner to find the best flights. It searches 100s of airlines and websites across the globe to ensure you’re not missing out on any route options or deals.
2. Book Your Accommodations
Use Booking.com for hotels and guest houses. They have the biggest inventory and consistently offer the best rates.
3. Book Your Tours & Experiences
Use Viator or Get Your Guide to find the best tours and experiences. They are my favorite tour search engines. I always check both as their inventory varies depending on the destination.
4. Book Your Car
Use Discover Cars or Rentalcars.com to find the best car rental deals. I recommend comparing rental agency reviews on Google to ensure you are booking with the best company in that destination, as the reviews are often more accurate than the car rental search engines.
5. Don’t Forget Airport Lounge Access
Get a Priority Pass membership to gain access to 1,400+ VIP lounges and airport experiences worldwide. The Priority Pass app is the first thing I check when I have a layover. I’ve been a member for over a decade, and having a comfortable place to relax before and between flights makes air travel so much more enjoyable.
6. Don’t Forget Travel Insurance
I never leave the country without travel insurance. It provides comprehensive protection in case anything goes wrong (ie. illness, injury, theft, and cancelations, etc.). I use it frequently for my travels to stay protected.
My favorite companies that offer the best coverage and rates are:
- World Nomads (best for all-around)
- Safety Wing (best for frequent travelers)

- Nosara Travel Guide:The Best Things to Do in Nosara, Costa Rica!
Did you know…
Nosara, costa rica travel guide: faqs, how to get to nosara.
One thing to note is that the town of Nosara town is actually about 15 minutes inland from the beach. This is where many locals live, and where you’ll find amenities like a large grocery store and gas station.
This isn’t the tourist hub. So even though the entire area is referred to as Nosara, you will actually be spending your time in and around Playa Guiones and Playa Pelada.
I’ve driven a rental car into Nosara from Santa Teresa in the south, and from Playa Negra in the north (located about 30 minutes south of Tamarindo).
From Liberia, Tamarindo
During Costa Rica’s rainy season , driving south on the coastal dirt road to Nosara isn’t an option. Near Ostional, there is an impassable river. That is, unless you have the most badass of cars. And even then, I’ve heard of them getting washed away.
Even in the dry season, you’re best to stick to the main highway – it’s much faster and more comfortable. (When it comes to driving in Costa Rica, Google Maps can’t be fully trusted.)
If you’re coming from Liberia airport, plan to take Route 21 all the way to Nicoya. Once you reach Nicoya, take Route 150 all the way to Nosara.
From Tamarindo, take Route 152 to Route 160 (through Santa Cruz). Then, hop on Route 21 until Nicoya, followed by Route 150.
If I were you, I would rent my own car and plan to drive on the paved highway – not the bumpy dirt coastal route – to Nosara.
From San José
The drive to Nosara from San Jose airport (Route 1 to 18 to 157 to 150) is easy to complete.
From Santa Teresa
The journey from Santa Teresa is not as friendly, mainly because of the Río Bongo (Bongo River).
And because Google Maps does not know the way!
Google Maps takes you to a part of the river that often cannot be crossed; we had to find a little detour on our own, to a bridge to get across.
Right before you hit the Río Bongo going north to Nosara, look for a little road called “Paso por río” on your Google Maps app. Turn right there, and follow the road through the town of Río Frío. Then, you’ll find a bridge across, and continue on to Nicoya.
Tips for Renting a Car
- Whether it’s the dry or green season, you’re going to want a 4WD or 4X4 rental car . It’s possible that you will have to cross a stream or two – if not a river. But at the very least, get a normal SUV . The roads in Nosara are not great, so a sedan is hardly suitable. Click here to book your rental car.
- You will find the cheapest, best, and most plentiful options in San Jose. Liberia is second best. If possible, book your rental car for pick-up at one of these two locations.
- You can rent a car once you arrive in Nosara – in Playa Guiones town or at the airport.
- Worldwide, my go-to site for finding great deals on rental cars is Discover Cars . Click here to book your rental car.
Once you’ve arrived in Costa Rica, you can take a domestic flight to the small Nosara airport . SANSA Airlines flies non-stop to many places around the country, mostly from San Jose.
Overall, I wouldn’t recommend flying to Nosara. The journey by car from San Jose will take about the same time as flying (when you factor in transportation to/from the airports, check-in, baggage claim, etc.), yet paying for flights and baggage is much less economical. Especially if you’re traveling with other people.
Plus, you’re still going to need a mode of transportation while in Nosara. May as well bring your rental car with you!
Alternatively, you can ride a bus or private shuttle to Nosara. Click here to find bookable routes going to/from Nosara.
Ask anyone where the worst roads in Costa Rica are, and you’ll be met with a quick and sure response: Nosara! The main road through Nosara (Highway 160) is paved.
But otherwise, the roads are a combination of dirt, gravel, and giant potholes (or mini lakes, in the rainy season)!
Nosara is very spread out, so planning how you’ll get around is essential.
- Walking: Walking around Nosara really isn’t an option. Unless you stay at a hotel near the beach and just plan to hang in that area. In that case, I would recommend staying at the beautiful Gilded Iguana so you can walk to the nearby restaurants, cafés, and Playa Guiones.
- Rental Car: As mentioned above, I recommend renting a car ! You can rent one in Nosara. Or in the best case scenario, you’ll pick up your car nearby the airport in San Jose or Liberia (where it’s cheaper). Click here to find the best deals on a rental car.
- Tuk-Tuk: Don’t want to drive yourself around? No worries. You can traverse the town via Nosara’s version of a taxi: tuk-tuk! They’re surprisingly amazing at navigating the bumpy dirt roads.
- Golf Cart, Scooter, or ATV: These are the other favorite modes of transportation in Nosara. When you arrive, you can pick up a rental from one of the shops in the center of town. Out of the three, I’d go with an ATV! That way, no hilltop is inaccessible. Plus, you can take your ATV on adventurous jungle forays to places like the Mala Noche Waterfall. An ATV will cost about $60/day, a golf cart will cost about $65/day.
Where to Stay in Nosara
Now that the logistics are out of the way, let’s talk about my favorite part: Nosara hotels!
In this beautiful beach town, a luxury boutique hotel, nestled up in the jungle , boasting ridiculous ocean views, is the ideal situation.
Want to experience the best that Nosara has to offer? Look no further than Tierra Magnifica Boutique Hotel .
This stunning oasis, situated in Nosara’s lush hillside, offers the most incredible ocean and jungle views , fabulous food at their on-site restaurant, Huacas (breakfast is included!), the most beautiful yoga shala, a waterfall nature walk on the property, a lovely pool, and of course, super attentive, friendly service.
Tierra Magnifica even offers free daily laundry service… Which is just about the coolest thing ever .
Especially when, every day, you’re getting sweaty, hiking, doing yoga, and exploring under the Nosara sun!
Everything you could ever want is there for you at Tierra Magnifica . The name says it all: a luxurious experience showcasing the magnificent land of Costa Rica.
I have stayed here twice – and clearly, I am obsessed .
And did I mention the view from the shower? Well, it’s unreal.
Click here to book your stay at Tierra Magnifica. Their amazing reviews speak for themselves. You won’t regret staying at this stunning hotel.
Other Nosara Hotels
Still looking?
If you want to stay near Playa Guiones, The Gilded Iguana Surf Hotel is super chic and beautiful.
Their pool area is stunning and they have a surf club and juice bar too! (Guests of Tierra Magnifica get free access to their surf club too.)
Other popular accommodation options in Nosara include:
- The Harmony Hotel : This hotel is a beautiful jungle oasis steps from the action of Nosara. The restaurant and juice bar are both delicious . And the pool is equally as fabulous! Click here to book your stay at Harmony Hotel.
- The Nomadic Hotel : I left this hotel feeling so inspired! I love the design of the place – and the chic beachy vibes. Click here to book your stay at The Nomadic.
- Bodhi Tree Yoga Resort : The ideal place to stay for yogis, this resort is known for its yoga retreats and classes. Click here to book your stay at Bodhi Tree.
- Green Sanctuary Hotel : The best option for budget-conscious travelers looking for a relaxing jungle experience. Click here to book your stay at Green Sanctuary.

Best Things to Do in Nosara, Costa Rica
When it comes to observing, preserving, and supporting wildlife, there are a few different wildlife sanctuaries in Nosara doing seriously amazing work.
During your visit to Nosara, Costa Rica, plan to visit at least one wildlife sanctuary. Not only is it a cool, educational experience for you, but your visit directly impacts the local wildlife – leaving the animals a little better off than you found them!
Sibu Wildlife Sanctuary
Sibu Wildlife Sanctuary ‘s mission is “provide a permanent, spacious sanctuary and ongoing care for wildlife that, due to psychological or physical injury, it is not possible to release back into the wild” – primarily due to issues humans have created.
Visiting Sibu’s jungle haven offers an immersive experience, allowing you to connect with, learn about, and support Costa Rica’s flora and fauna simultaneously. While there, you’ll see some of the sanctuary’s handicapped wildlife (including monkeys, sloths, coatis, and other animals).
Guided tours at Sibu are only available on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 10 AM. The tours are 2 hours long, cost $60/person, and you must book your tour in advance . Trust me, this is one of the best things to do in Nosara. You don’t want to miss out!
Nosara Refuge for Wildlife
Nosara’s Refuge for Wildlife (now known as International Animal Rescue Costa Rica ) is another must-visit! The refuge’s work revolves around rescuing injured, abandoned, and orphaned howler monkeys and caring for them until they’re ready to monkey around again!
Here, you’ll have the opportunity to see plenty of rescued monkeys and learn about organization’s Rescue, Rehabilitation and Release Program.
To visit the Refuge for Wildlife, you must make a reservation . Guided visits are limited to 10 people and are usually scheduled between 10:30 am to 12:30 pm. Expect to give a $50 donation/person to enter.
In and around the Nosara area, there are plenty of beautiful beaches to discover. Some are perfect for surf, others for chilling.
Here’s a quick breakdown of the best Nosara beaches to visit.
Playa Guiones
Playa Guiones is, by far, the top surf spot in the area – great for beginners and advanced surfers. But the 4-mile stretch of white sandy beach is also perfect for long morning walks. Or for chilling out and watching the sunset.
Playa Guiones is the main beach in Nosara, so obviously, you can’t come here and not visit Guiones.
Playa Pelada
Offering tropical tranquillity at its finest , Playa Pelada is a pristine half-moon bay beach just north of Playa Guiones. Whether you want to swim in the turquoise waters, sprawl under a shady tree, check out the many seashells, or explore the rocky tide pools and caves, Playa Pelada is all pura vida …
And the best part is, compared to Playa Guiones, crowds are nonexistent at Playa Pelada.
To top off your perfect beach day, mosey over to La Luna (see #5 below for more info!), and sip on a refreshing cocktail with the sand in between your toes.
Playa Garza
15 minutes south of Nosara, you will find the placid fishing village of Playa Garza. Known for its chill vibes, calm, clear seas, and uncrowded, golden sandy beaches, Playa Garza is worth adding to your list.
Oh, and if you do go, then a stop at Perozah , a lovely beachfront restaurant and lounge, is definitely in order!
San Juanillo Beach
A 40-minute drive up the coast will deliver you to one of Guanacaste’s dreamiest (and relatively unknown) white-sand beaches.
If you have plenty of time to spare – and if your goals include beach bumming it, tanning, and swimming in brilliant azure waters, then head up to San Juanillo. The views will not disappoint!
You can only drive north to San Juanillo if the Río Rosario in Ostional is passable. Ask around before you go.
How’s this for an epic half-day trip ?
Imagine: Spending the day driving your ATV around on mountainous jungle trails, passing incredible views of the ocean all the while. And then, topping it off with a tour of a local family’s coffee farm and the loveliest of farm-to-table dinners.
If this ATV tour doesn’t sound amazing, then I literally don’t know what does!
Click here to book your Half-Day Mountain ATV Tour in Nosara.
Nosara is a yoga town! Whether you just want to drop in for a few yoga classes or extend your stay for a yoga retreat or teacher training, there are plenty of places, spaces, and styles to choose from!
Since yoga is one of the top things to do in Nosara, many hotels offer daily classes to their guests.
Tierra Magnifica , where I always stay, offers daily classes in their open-air shala with epic views of Playa Guiones.
If you’re keen to check out Nosara’s most popular yoga institutions, check out the below options!
P.S. If you’re like me, then you’d rather not rent/share yoga mats. They’re a personal item, for sure! This ultra-lightweight Manduka travel yoga mat is my absolute favorite. I travel everywhere with it and recommend it to anyone who’ll listen. Click here to grab yours!
Harmony Healing Centre Nosara
The Healing Centre at Harmony Hotel is one of the top places to practice yoga in Nosara, Costa Rica. Their gentle yoga classes are set inside an open-air shala, complete with jungle views – and even better, jungle sounds!
A range of daily classes – from vinyasa, meditation, and qigong, to hatha, yin, and breathwork – are available! Click here to check out their website .
Bodhi Tree Yoga Resort
The Bodhi Tree Resort is known as one of the best yoga resorts and retreats around Nosara, Costa Rica.
Whether you’re keen for a high-energy vinyasa or restorative yin class, Bodhi Tree Yoga Resort has plenty of daily classes on their schedule – all set within beautiful 360-degree view, open-air yoga shalas.

Yoga Teacher Training
Have your sights set on completing a yoga teacher training in Nosara?
The Nosara Yoga Institute and the Yoga Collective Nosara are two great options to look into further!
As one of the only beachfront restaurants in Nosara (and by far, the best one!), you can’t miss sunset dinner and drinks at La Luna .
Expect delicious Mediterranean fare with a relaxed, pura vida beach vibe. It’s a little pricey, but honestly, you can’t beat the location or the beautiful atmosphere. Wining and dining at La Luna is one of the best things to do in Nosara, no doubt.
La Luna is also open for breakfast and lunch. In the high season, make sure to call to make a reservation – especially for outdoor sunset seating! This is an experience you won’t soon forget, so don’t skip it!

The Nicoya Peninsula is known for its dry tropical forest, and the Nosara Biological Reserve offers the perfect opportunity to explore it. The best time to go is very early in the morning – to beat the heat, and see as many animals as possible!
Set on more than 30 hectares of protected land (within the boundaries of Lagarta Lodge ‘s property), the Nosara Biological Reserve is home to all kinds of wildlife, from birds, monkeys, anteaters, and butterflies to coatis, raccoons, iguanas, and insects. (Emphasis on the insects… And spiders .) This is where eco-friendly bug repellent comes in handy. Grab yours here!
There are many well-marked paths and a roundtrip walk usually takes about 2 hours. My favorite one is the loop that passes by the river. We were lucky enough to see a crocodile basking in the sun on the riverbank.
You can hire a nature guide to go here with you, or simply take a self-guided tour.
Going on a sunset horseback riding tour is one of the most iconic things to do in Nosara.
On this private tour , you and your horse will hike on jungle trails, through rivers, and stroll along the beach as the waves crash and the sun kisses the sky pink.
If you love animals, and a little adventure in nature, then this one’s for you.
Click here to book your Private Sunset Horseback Riding Tour now.
About 25 minutes north of Nosara, you will find Ostional, a beach town that’s famous for its sea turtle arribadas – or arrivals. Every year, thousands upon thousands of Olive Ridley turtles return to the shores of the Ostional National Wildlife Refuge to lay their eggs.
Though Olive Ridley sea turtles (and two other species) still lay eggs and hatch every month on the shores of Costa Rica, the arribadas generally occur between late July or early August through late December. So with a little luck, you’ll see turtles no matter what! The best time to go is at dusk or dawn (5 am or 5 pm).
If you’re really lucky (like I was!), then you’ll see the turtles laying eggs and babies hatching… all in one night! It’s an unforgettable experience, to be sure.
How to Visit Ostional Wildlife Refuge
You can ask your hotel to book a nature tour to Ostional Wildlife Refuge for you. That way, you’ll have a guide showing you what to look for!
Alternatively, if you have a 4WD rental car , you can drive yourself there – and have a quieter, more magical experience without loads of other people around. The drive is pretty easy! (Just make sure to go slow enough to avoid the potholes. But that applies everywhere in Costa Rica.)
This website has the best deals on rental cars in Costa Rica! Click here to book your rental car now.
If you’re into surfing, then you already know: Nosara, Costa Rica is officially on the map. These days, it’s ranked as one of Costa Rica’s top surf towns, for surfers of all levels.
There are plenty of breaks to choose from, propped up by sandbars, rocky reefs, and river mouths. So depending on the tide, swell, and wind direction, you can almost always find a good option.
Guiones is the consistent go-to (and friendly for non-locals), but depending on the conditions, you can look to Ostional, Garza, and Nosara Beach.
Take a Surf Lesson
If you’re designating your trip to Nosara as the place you finally learn to surf, I reckon that’s a smart choice. There are plenty of beginner-friendly waves in Nosara and surf schools offering surf lessons .
You can book private surf lessons at a surf school like Agua Tibia, Tierra Costa, Nosara CR Surf School, or Nosara Tico Surf School for about $80-85 USD for 90 minutes.
Of course they also offer group lessons and different multi-lesson packages.
You can also click here to book your private surf lesson online.
Where to Get a Surfboard Rental
You can pick up a rental from any of the above schools (and plenty of other places in town).
Board rentals cost about $20-30 USD for a full day, or $110-150 per week – depending on if you need a foamie or a performance board.
If you want to devour some local Tico food, I got you. Actually, Rosi does.
Rosi’s Soda Tica is a must if you’re craving a casado for lunch! If you aren’t familiar, a casado – which means marriage – is a typical Costa Rican platter that includes a combination of some or all of the following: rice, beans, a protein of your choice (mine’s fish or shrimp!), veggies, salad, plantains, and tortillas.
You’d be hard-pressed to find a better casado than Rosi’s. It’s cheap, local, and scrumptious – a true staple in Nosara!

Learn to Make Traditional Tico Food
Speaking of traditional Costa Rican cuisine… This 2-Hour Cooking Class in Nosara is one of the most memorable experiences you’ll have on your trip!
Farm-fresh ingredients and cooking traditional recipes over fire is a quintessential Tico experience.
This 2-Hour Cooking Class in Nosara has only glowing 5-star reviews.
I personally haven’t done this yet, but next time I visit Nosara, I will!
Click here to book your cooking class.
Kayaking tours are one of my absolute favorite things to do when I travel. Especially when there are cool birds, howler monkeys, and crocodiles to spot along the way.
But sadly, I did not enjoy my kayaking tour through the mangroves and on the Nosara River. Our guide seemed disinterested in actually… guiding . So while I can’t recommend the popular tour company we went with, I can say that kayaking has the potential to be one of the best things you do in Nosara! You can get super close to crocodiles as they swim and bask in the sun.
If I did this tour over again, I would book a nature tour with Nature Tours Gabriela. She has amazing reviews on Tripadvisor and her kayak tours are just $55/person. She also offers kayak rentals, if you just want to go on your own.
You also have the option of a Small-Group Safari Float in Nosara River . I haven’t done this specific tour, but it looks like it’d be pretty epic. Click here to book your Safari Float.
If you don’t hike to a waterfall, did you actually visit Costa Rica? (No.) Luckily, Nosara’s Mala Noche Waterfall can offer you this quintessential Tico experience.
Hidden deep in the jungle, you may have a hard time finding this gem. So you can either:
- Hire a nature guide, or;
- Ask around for directions and surrender to the adventure of finding it yourself.
Note, the waterfall itself isn’t super impressive. A visit here is more about the jungle trek, followed by a refreshing swim in the fall’s pool, surrounded by Guanacaste trees. Just don’t forget your hiking boots !
P.S. Ladies, if you’re in the market for new hiking boots, these trusty waterproof Merrel boots are my all-time favorites.
Ready to pump up the adrenaline? When in Costa Rica, you have to zipline through the jungle canopy. It’s pretty much non-negotiable.
Miss Sky Canopy’s zipline claims the title for the longest canopy tour in the world!
On 21 different exhilarating ziplines (ranging between 300-700m), you’ll scream and soar over mountain ridges and rivers, with incredible views over the jungle – all the way to the Pacific. The 8 am tour option also includes time to see a waterfall and swim in jungle pools. Click here to learn more.
Note: If you’re planning to visit La Fortuna , you’ll have the opportunity to zipline there too! Views of the lush tropical rainforest, Lake Arenal, and the Arenal Volcano are just as amazing. Check out my guide to 19 Incredible Things to Do in La Fortuna here!
If you like artisanal cocktails and tapas like I do, then you’re going to love Howler’s Beach Lounge .
Relaxed jungle-beach vibes, great tunes, seriously epic cocktails and tacos come together to make this gem of a bar.
From what I can tell, there’s no drink menu. Just order whatever you feel like, and expect the best possible version of that to be placed in front of you shortly after!
At Howler’s, I always go for a margarita (but then, when do I not?). The margaritas are delicious here, because they use local mandarin limes! So good!
Oh, and do yourself another favor: try the tuna carpaccio. A local guy passed this wisdom on to me, and it did not disappoint!

Nosara’s collection of beautiful boutique shops only continues to grow.
When you need a break from the beach, wander any of the roads around Playa Guiones and you’ll stumble upon a shop or two decked out in beautiful beachy linen clothing, swimsuits, hats, and more.
When you visit Nosara, there are a few non-negotiable items to pack!
Here’s a little Amazon shopping list, for your convenience!

If you’re into surfing, practicing yoga, eating delicious food, hanging at beautiful beaches, and exploring nature, then Nosara, Costa Rica is definitely worth visiting. This tiny town offers everything you need in a tropical beach vacation – without the intense crowds. After exploring the area and experiencing all the best things to do in Nosara, I can say that Nosara is absolutely worth visiting – for at least a few days! Use this Nosara, Costa Rica Travel Guide to plan your trip!
To get to Nosara from an international destination, you will need to fly into either San Jose or Liberia. From either airport, you can rent a car and drive yourself to Nosara (this is my recommendation, because the Nosara area is best explored with a car) or you can take a flight on a small plane to the tiny domestic Nosara airport. Find more details on flying to Nosara in this post!
Nosara is located on the Pacific coast of the Nicoya Peninsula, in Costa Rica’s Guanacaste province. Nosara, Costa Rica is best known as a destination for yoga, surf, abundant wildlife, great food, and relaxed vibes, as well as a thriving international community of local Ticos, expats, and digital nomads.
Personally, I think that the rainy season (or the green season) is the most beautiful time of year to travel to Nosara. A trip between May and August is ideal, because it’s lush, green, and lovely. It’s sunny most of the time, but it does rain often in the evenings – which is always welcome after a hot, humid day! I wouldn’t recommend October through November as it rains constantly . The dry season, which runs from December to April, is also a great time to visit. It’s sunny pretty much every day, which obviously means it’s going to be hot. The surf is also best (consistently pumping) at this time of year in Costa Rica. Nosara is no different! The downsides of the dry season are that, obviously, everything is dry, so the jungles are brown and the roads are super dusty. Overall, any time (other than between October to November) is a great time to visit Nosara!
This Nosara Travel Guide details all of the best things to do in Nosara, along with where to stay, places to eat, Nosara travel tips, and more. But to sum it up, the best things to do in Nosara include: practicing yoga, surfing, visiting a Nosara wildlife sanctuary, going horseback riding, going kayaking, going ziplining, spending time at the Nosara beaches (Playa Guiones and Playa Pelada), going ATVing, hiking, and more. Check out this blog post for all of the details!
I hate to burst your bubble, but here’s the fact: Costa Rica is the most expensive country in Central America. By far. And Nosara is no exception. Nosara is home to a large international community of ex-pats. It’s the place where city folk from San Jose come to vacation, and obviously a popular stop along the country’s tourist trail. From accommodation to food to tours, Nosara is not cheap (but it’s also not unreasonable – and certainly not unaffordable.) If you’re not familiar with Costa Rica already, you may be shocked that almost everything is priced in USD – making things even more expensive than you might expect. That’s just the way it is! If you have room in your budget to splurge a bit, you’re going to love Nosara. I know I did! If you’re looking for a budget destination in Central America, check out Nicaragua or Guatemala .

We can only go early November and want to pretty much follow your recommendations. Is the weather going to be too rainy or what do you think? Ive read mixed opinions on early November not sure if worth it or not (it’s less expensive then). thanks!
September 7, 2023 at 8:35 am
Hi Leslie, I just spent the first three months of rainy season in Costa Rica. Just left a week ago. It has been an incredibly mild rainy season so far. The trend could continue… But who knows? See my article here on my thoughts about Costa Rica’s rainy season . I wrote it last year, when it rained a lot more. And I still loved being there. Certainly hotels will be a lot less expensive in Nosara in early November than high season. Nosara is situated in Guanacaste’s dry tropical forest, so it rains less there than more southern parts of CR. All in all, I would say go! Just make sure you have a week or so, so that if a few days get rained out, it’s not too big of a deal :)

The Best Nosara Travel Guide: Where to eat in Nosara, Where to Stay & What to do! (2024)
If you were looking for the best Nosara Travel guide, this post is for you!
The minute we discovered that Aaron was eligible for a 6 week paternity leave, we knew that we wanted to travel somewhere for a month to enjoy it. After contemplating a few different destinations, we decided on Nosara, Costa Rica
Best friends of ours spent a few months there last year during COVID and said it was a dream. My brother also travelled there a few times and said that we would absolutely love it. They all were not wrong.
Known as a wellness, surf and yoga mecca in not only Costa Rica but in North America, this little beach town really makes you enjoy each day. Located in the Nicoya Peninsula ( which is also known as the “Blue Zone” where people are known to live up to 100 years old on average), it is home to some awesome beaches, endless yoga, healthy eats and famous surf breaks.
After spending a month here, I am excited to share my favourite things to do, where to eat and everything that is helpful about visiting Nosara! This Nosara Travel guide will have you familiar with the area in no time

GENERAL INFO ABOUT NOSARA, COSTA RICA
LANGUAGE: The prominent language spoken is Spanish but you will find English-speaking people in a lot of the tourist areas. It wouldn’t hurt to have a Google Translator App downloaded for basic conversations.
HOW MANY DAYS DO YOU NEED : Depends who you ask! Some people stay for months on end! There is a huge expat scene here with some people coming to work remotely or escape winter for a month or two. If it’s strictly a vacation, I would say a week allows you to experience it to it’s fullest!
C OST : A lot of people said Nosara was pricey but we found it pretty similar to costs back home ( Toronto, Canada). Expect to pay $10 for a cocktail at most places and $8-$20 for an entree. Hotels are a bit more pricier for what you get but there are a ton of options that would allow you to stay in your budget! Definitely bring some Costa Rican dollars ( Colanions) for juice stands or the odd restaurant that is cash only but most places accept major credit cards. If any other Nosara Travel Guide tries to tell you it’s beyond expensive, it’s because they likely don’t want you to visit! haha. It’s doable!!
HOW TO GET FROM LIBERIA TO NOSARA BEACH:
CAR – Nosara is roughly 2.5 hours from Liberia Airport and 5 hours from San Jose Airport.
The roads in Costa Rica are extremely rough and sometimes completely unpaved. While the beginning of the drive from Liberia wasn’t bad, the last hour gets bumpy. If you are prone to getting car sick, definitely take some gravol while en route. Renting a car in Costa Rica is a whole other subject but let’s just say it is very pricey and there are a lot of scams out there. The cost of our car was $1800 CAD for the month and we rented through National Car. Make sure that your quote or reservation includes Third Party Insurance or Loss Waiver Damage or they will add it on upon arrival which can quickly escalate the costs.
LOCAL FLIGHT – If you are in a hurry, local airline Sansa offers quick 20 minute direct flights! Though on the pricier side, it can get you there real quick!
PRIVATE SHUTTLE- If you want to leave the driving to someone else, book a quick and direct shuttle! This one here is $129 CAD for up to 4 people which is a huge savings compared to renting a car
TIP: If you are arriving closer to sunset, we recommend grabbing a room at the Hilton Garden Inn Liberia Airport. If you are not familiar with the route or roads leading to Nosara, it is best to avoid driving at nighttime. There are little to no street lamps and it would be very hard to navigate.

WHEN TO VISIT NOSARA COSTA RICA
Peak season is December- January where rain is minimal but prices are high and spots are at their highest occupancies! We recommend February- April for a visit which is dry season but a little bit less congested. Rainy season is considered May- November aka “green season” which is likely special in it’s own way too and certainly more reasonable cost wise!
HOW TO GET AROUND IN NOSARA
Unsure how to get around? This Nosara Travel Guide is breaking it down for you and you will be relived to know there are plenty of ways to see this magical area!
We choose to rent a car for the duration of our trip. If you have young kids or want to check out neighbouring areas and beaches, I would recommend it! The roads are not really stroller friendly. However, it is definitely not necessary. The main area of Nosara is quite walkable. If you are travelling as a couple or have kids that are older, I would ditch it and explore the area with some other options available!
Some popular ways to get around that don’t involve renting a car:
- RENTING AN ATV! You can rent one for roughly $75 USD A DAY! It can get you up some of the steep hills that you will find yourself at if you head to certain hotels, restaurants etc that are located deeper in the jungle
- TUK TUK RIDES ! Grabbing a local tuk tuk for a quick scoot to a near by beach or restaurant is not only super reasonable but it is also supporting the locals as many of the Tuk Tuk’s are operated by Ticos!
- GOLF CARTS! We reallly dwelled that we didn’t get a golf cart. While it is probably not the safest option for a baby, younger kids can easily hop on and off one. So many people drive these around and it really allows you to get that true Nosara way of life on them! A local company that rents them out is called Limo Dan and they run about $500 for the week
WHERE TO STAY IN NOSARA COSTA RICA?
If you are hoping to find a luxury hotel in Nosara, this is not the place for you! While there are a ton of accommodation options, 5 star or all inclusive style resorts are not here. Instead you can find trendy, creative and small boutique style lodges to hang your hat!
Playa Guiones, the main surf beach in Nosara, has the majority of the B&B’s and hotels but there are also some further up into the jungle/mountain side that offer amazing view points too. This Nosara Travel Guide will share a few different options with you!
WHERE DID WE STAY?
We stayed in a few places during our time in Nosara! Rentals and Air BNB’s in Nosara booked up VERY far in advance- something to keep in mind if you are looking to book. The first place we stayed only had availability for 12 days so that’s where we started our trip. After that it was a mix of a hotel, a luxury villa and then another unique property!
FIRST PLACE- We stayed in an Air Bnb in Playa Pelada to start off our trip! It was amazing and very reasonable. It was a 2 bedroom condo with a massive balcony that had a beautiful hammock, lounger set and table. We were literally 2 minutes walking distance from the famous La Luna restaurant ( more on that later) and across the street from Il Pepperoni restaurant ( another great dining option). Playa Pelada is a quieter beach but in our opinion a lot more beautiful than Guiones!
SECOND PLACE IN NICOYA REGION- We moved down the coast a bit as we had some hotel points and stayed at Hotel Punta Islita! You can read more about that hotel HERE
THIRD PLACE – Ahhh Finca Austria! This place is quite literally one of the most beautiful places we have stayed. It is perfect for retreats, weddings or large family stays. We were lucky enough to get the place to ourselves! The staff ended up feeling like friends as well. The pool at the main house is the real draw and while it is in Nosara, you really could stay put at the resort and not leave the entire time if you wanted! I almost didn’t want to share this spot in our Nosara Travel Guide as it’s pretty special.
HERE ARE SOME OTHER PLACES TO STAY IN NOSARA:
HARMONY HOTEL – The Harmony Hotel was one of the first hotels to set up shop in Nosara making it an OG in the area. Here you can find not only a cool mid century style space but it also offers spa treatments, a hip restaurant serving up locally and sustainably sourced food and yoga classes in their open air shala.
BODHI TREE YOGA RESORT – If you are looking for the “IT” spot to do yoga and detox in a fancy setting, this place is for you. You will likely find this place mentioned in any Nosara Travel Guide.
Their large infinity pool is 10/10 and they have various yoga shalas throughout the property that are each unique. They have an on site juice bar, an incredible boutique and a modern spa. You can also visit this resort just for a yoga class. The cost of that is $20 USD and if I had to pick one Shala to do a class, I would definitely recommend the Ocean Shala which offers up the most incredible views. Check the schedule before doing a class!
THE GILDED IGUANA – One of the most beautiful and luxurious hotels in Nosara smack in the center of town. Rooms here are incredibly spacious, modern and the pool is a dream! They even have a surf club right by the beach with a juice bar!
NORTE NOSARA- The new kid on the block! Opened just over a year ago, this place has become a spot for many yogis looking to take a challenging class. They also offer sound baths, breathing workshops and if you are just looking for a place to lounge and drink, they are home to “The Jungle Bar” which is known to be quite fun post dinner. Rooms are quaint and small but very aesthetically pleasing.
WHERE TO EAT OR DRINK IN NOSARA
This wouldn’t be a very good Nosara Travel Guide without breaking down the best places to eat at!
Nosara is home to a mecca of healthy and delicious eating options! You can get items like acai bowls, or smoothies at virtually any corner but sandwiched in-between all of this are gourmet eateries perfect for a special dinner out. One common theme at all of the establishments: a super relaxed vibe and most often paired with open air seating. Pura Vida all the way!
D ESTINY NOSARA
Destiny was one of our FAVOURITE restaurants! It was so good that we went over 5 times LOL. Oops! They open at 6am and are busy day in and day out….for good reason!
Highlights include: Destiny Egg’s Nest breakfast ( SO GOOD!), Coconut Whip Coffee, Breakfast Burrito and the Destiny Smoothie.
MANGOES JUICERY
A newly opened spot in the Il Pepperoni Restaurant space, this cute juice and smoothie shack is not only SO good, it is way more reasonably priced than places in Guiones. The juices run about $5 CAD and the acai bowls are about $10 CAD! The portions are super big and we decided this was hands down the best place to get an acai or pitaya bowl in Nosara ( and trust me we tried a lot). It is located in Playa Pelada so not on the main strip in town- just FYI! It is open everyday from 7AM-3PM
La Luna is Nosara’s best restaurant. This restaurant is pretty much the most recommended in every guide…but it is worth the hype in my opinion! It is definitely on the pricier side of things but it is one of the only beachfront dining options in the areas. You can come in your bare feet yet still experience a luxurious dining experience where you can watch the sun set. We recommend booking a reservation anytime between 5-6PM for your ultimate viewing pleasure! The pizzas are really yummy and if you are dining on a budget, the best option! RESERVATIONS IN ADVANCE RECOMMENDED!
HOWLER’S
BEST DISH IN ALL OF NOSARA? Hand’s down the Tuna Carpaccio from here!
We were fighting over the last few bites and almost ordered a second one! We came back twice to have this dish. Not only is this place cute and located right in the main hub of Guiones ( great for people watching!), it has delicious handcrafted cocktails.
There is no menu for the drinks as they quite literally can make you whatever you want. I asked for a Paper plane which is not the most common cocktail and they not only said they could make it but they crushed it! It was so 10/10.
Coyol is not just a restaurant, it is an experience. Perched up high in the jungle, you are treated to the ultimate views at sunset in an atmosphere that is super unique. It offers up a top notch cocktail list, and a variety of smoked meat dishes (literally cooked in the smoker outside). The restaurant structure looks like a modern greenhouse and the outdoor seating area features communal farmhouse tables and stringlights. Also don’t miss the famous tree swing! Perfect for getting that IG shot!
OTHER RESTAURANTS TO CHECK OUT IN NOSARA COSTA RICA:
Cafe Social, 10 Pies, Perozah ( in Garza area- this place is 100% overpriced but such a cool vibe and the food IS good), Rosi’s Soda ( local Costa Rican food that is super affordable), Beach Dog Cafe, Naked Foods- all make the Nosara Travel Guide cut!

What to do in nosara beach.
The best thing about Nosara is that you can fill up your day with activities or you can literally do nothing but hang in a hammock all day and either way you slice it, you will have the best time.
SURFING IN NOSARA
It wouldn’t be a Nosara Travel Guide without mentioning surfing. Nosara was named by National Geographic as one of the top 20 surf towns in the world. Even if you don’t surf, it is such a fun activity to try out when you are quite literally in the hub of it! The best waves can be found in Playa Guiones and there are so many Nosara Surf Camps.
YOGA OR SOUND BATH IN NOSARA
There are a ton of yoga and wellness classes to take part in! Bodhi Tree and Norte are two of the most popular studios where there are a variety of classes but there are a ton of places to practise! Harmony hotel, The Gilded Surf Club etc. You really don’t have to look too far. If you just do yoga at home, I urge you to try a sound bath experience, breathing or meditation class additionally as it’s such a special experience here!
WATCH THE SUNSETS EVERY NIGHT
Nosara Beaches are special. You might be thinking- how basic is this? Should this really be added to the WHAT TO DO section? Yes, yes it should. This is always part of any Nosara Travel Guide and this is why…
Watching the sunsets in Costa Rica is actually an activity. We spent 30 days there and each night the sunset was INSANE! Groups start flocking down to the beach about 20 minutes before with some beers or snacks and everyone just sits there and watches the magical colours. We much preferred Playa Pelada to Guiones .
VISIT GARZA
Located a quick 15 minutes from Nosara, Garza is an up and coming area. The beach and shoreline is much different than Nosara beaches and is definitely more swimable! You will also find the restaurant Peronzah here which is one of the most popular restaurants at the moment! They sometimes do full moon parties right on the beach which is not something that is easy to find in Nosara!
WATCH TURTLES HATCH AT OSTIONAL BEACH
Ostional Beach is roughly 25 minutes from the main area of Nosara and turtles or not, is a stunning beach. Beginning in late April though, baby turtles begin hatching on the beach (!!!). Upon hatching, they make their way to the ocean and it is truly an unforgettable experience.
To see the turtles, you must hire a guide or go through a tour. We did this one HERE!
VISIT THE FARMERS MARKET IN NOSARA
Each Tuesday there is a farmer’s market in Nosara. Here you can find local vendors and organic farmers produce. There are some vendors even selling little snacks and treats! It is a great way to meet people in the community and is almost a weekly ritual if you live in the area.
OTHER THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT NOSARA, COSTA RICA:
- It is sometimes normal for directions to take you on routes that require you to cross a river. Yes a river. It sounds a lot worse than it is as a lot of the rivers are low in dry season and it is pretty standard. It saves you a ton of time as well. This isn’t just for a Nosara Travel Guide, it would be in any Costa Rica Guide
- When renting a car, make sure you rent a car with all wheel drive aka an SUV or truck. As per my point above, crossing a river in a sedan might be a bit more difficult and not advised. Most locals drive little SUV’S and if you aren’t crossing a river, you might be heading down some super bumpy and unpaved roads.
- The bugs are bad. Bring tons of bug spray! Also as soon as the sunsets, sand bugs are known to come out and our little one got bite quite a bit so definitely don’t stick around too long after it gets dark unless you are fully covered and sprayed!
- A lot of people there communicate via Whatsap so make sure you have it downloaded before you go! In terms of directions, Waze is actually a lot better than Google Maps
I hoped this Nosara Travel Guide helped you plan or get excited about visiting this amazing spot! Let me know if you end up going!!

Arrival To Nosara
Nosara is about 3 hours away from the Liberia International Airpor t, and about 5 hours away from the San Jose airport . We always rent a car from Adobe Rental Car when we go, and a larger car such as a 4×2 or a 4×4 is the best way to go. If you are renting a car and want a 10-20% discount, you can use our special discount.
RELATED POST: Driving In Costa Rica
Getting to Nosara is tricky. You’ll want a car that’s not a sedan because there are lots of dirt roads and speed bumps in the area. Relax and enjoy the ride, because you aren’t going to get to Nosara quickly! It’s important to note that while you may want to go to the Nosara area, all the action is off the main road into Playa Guiones.
Costa Rica weather has two seasons, and they are important when visiting Nosara. The dry season is generally a great time to visit Nosara in a smaller car, and in the rainy season, you’ll want to check ahead of time with your hotel to make sure you can get there because the dirt roads turn to pure mud.
There are buses that go to Nosara area regularly, you’ll want to check the bus schedule here
Nosara has an airstrip where domestic flights arrive, so you can fly into Nosara from either international airport.
Things To Do Near Nosara
Deep sea fishing.
If you love to fish, this is, without a doubt, a “fin-tastic” activity to try. The deep blue waters off the coast of Nosara are bursting with diverse fish species, making it a great place for recreational fishing.
You can reel in the real big game including tuna, marlin, and sailfish. And with so many fishing charters available, you can always find a well-equipped boat and knowledgeable guide to make your excursions a success.
December to April is the best time to head to Nosara for deep-sea fishing. Not just because the weather is warmer and the waters are calmer but also because there are larger schools of fish at this time.
Horseback Riding
You can’t visit Nosara and not ride a horse! If you’re looking for fun activities to do that don’t involve wearing a fishing hat, definitely try horseback riding. Imagine galloping along gorgeous beaches and trotting through verdant greenery; it’s a dream come true.
Expert guides will lead you and your loved ones on well-trained horses, offering incredible insights into the flora and fauna you find along the way. A sunset ride along the golden fine sands of Playa Pelada, especially, is truly mesmerizing.
Join the Costa Rica With Kids Facebook Group. Ask all the Costa Rica Travel questions you want- we will answer them!
Take a day away from the kids.
Nosara is super unique in that you can have your kids spend a day or a week at Nosara Day Camp or Salty by Nosara Kid’s Camp.
They’ll spend time with other kids doing activities popular with locals. There’s everything from waterfall chasing and hiking to surf camp. Rates at the time of writing were about $75/day or $375 per week per child.
There is also Nosara Nannies , a locally owned and operated nanny service you can use to entertain the kids day or night. You can contact them directly via What’sApp? for rates and availability.
Escape Rooms
Nosara Escape has tow different types of escape rooms- one inside and one in the rainforest. These activities are for all ages, and are like escape rooms on steroids!
For the indoor escape rooms, you’ll choose between a surf escape room and a space escape room- each of which you’ll try to get out of within 60 minutes.
The Jungle Escape is outside, and you’ll run through the forest looking for clues to complete your challenge.
Visit A Nearby Beach
I’ll be the first to admit that beach hopping is pretty much my favorite activity in Costa Rica. And if you’re craving a bit of vitamin sea in a calm, less-crowded destination, the breathtaking beaches of Nosara will not disappoint.
The waters stay warm all year round, making the beaches perfect for surfing and swimming. I highly recommend a rental car in Costa Rica , and beach hopping in Nosara is one of the main reasons why. You can go to so many little beaches just 10-15 minutes away from the main beach.
Playa Guiones is the main beach here and one of the most frequented. You may find a little bit of a crowd, but the place is still not as busy as Tamarindo. It’s the kind of place where you can meditate, enjoy a quiet picnic, or just kick back under the trees near the shore and read a book. Playa Nosara, Pelada, Samara, Carrillo, and Ostional are also other beaches in the area worth checking out. Ostional is a great spot to watch the turtles nest.
Sibu Wildlife Sanctuary
Done dipping your toes in the sand? Why not head to Sibu Wildlife Sanctuary and hang out with and even volunteer to help some of the most adorable inhabitants of Costa Rica – the howler monkeys ?
Here, where dozens of injured, abandoned, and orphaned howlers call home, you will not only spend time with these cute creatures; you’ll also have a chance to donate to the Refuge’s cause and truly make a difference in these animals’ lives.
While the majority of residents are howler monkeys, you will also find peccaries, raccoons, exotic birds, sloths , and other native animals, making this sanctuary one of the best experiences for animal lovers.
Nosara Biological Reserve
At Nosara Biological Reserve, you’ll find up to 90 acres of protected land where you can see diverse wildlife up close. Through the well-maintained trails, you will see howler monkeys, coatis, anteaters, raccoons, and iguanas that dwell in tropical and mangrove forests. You can explore the jungle on your own or make arrangements for a guided tour.
And it’s okay if you are not able to see everything in a single day. Next to the reserve is one of the most incredible boutique hotels in the Nicoya Peninsula, the Lagarta Lodge where you can relax and rejuvenate yourself for the next day. Stay here and enjoy free, easy access to the reserve!
Strap on your helmet and get ready to explore the natural beauty of Nosara on four wheels. With an ATV tour, you’ll ride along stunning sun-kissed beaches, through lush forests, and up rugged hills for scenic views.
Along the way, you may spot some local wildlife – definitely keep an eye out for sloths, monkeys, iguanas, and exotic birds. And don’t worry if you can’t drive. Most places offering ATV tours have professional guides too who would be happy to help you navigate the turbulent terrain. They will also show you where to look to spot animals.
Watch Sea Turtles Nest
If you travel to Nosara during the rainy season, specifically between July and November, you will have an opportunity to witness one of the most spectacular phenomena in the Nicoya Peninsula, the nesting of sea turtles.
The best place to experience this natural event is Playa Ostional, where hundreds of Olive Ridley sea turtles flock to the shore to lay their eggs. You will head to the Ostional Wildlife Refuge where you must book a tour with a guide to see the seat turtles nest. You’ll learn more about sea turtles, see them nest on the beach, and watch the newly-hatched babies try to make it to the water.
Enjoy A Yoga Class
With verdant greenery, untouched beaches, and a tranquil atmosphere, Nosara is the perfect place to find your inner peace. It’s easy to see why it’s a yogi’s paradise – the place is crawling with yoga studios, yoga retreats, and instructors to help travelers de-stress and reconnect with the innermost part of themselves.
You will find a yoga class in almost every hotel with everything a yogi could want. Even some events and workshops offer yoga. And here is the best part.
You don’t need to be a seasoned yogi to enjoy a class. Most yoga instructors offer yoga classes for beginners as well to help you start this beautiful journey of finding your inner buddha and “zen-ifying” your body and soul. The Bodhi Tree Yoga Resort is a great place to start as they have multiple daily classes in English and Spanish.
Nosara is known for its consistent waves that offer both beginner and avid surfers an opportunity to carry out safe rides, so surfing is certainly an activity you don’t want to miss. Playa Guiones is where most of the fun is. Offering some of the best beach breaks in the region, this surf spot will truly deliver. Playa Santa Teresa isn’t far either, and it’s an epic spot to surf as well.
If you’re an expert surfer, visit any of the numerous surf schools in the Guiones area and rent a board. You can ask your hotel for the best recommendations on gear rentals. Surf lessons are also available for newbies during low tide.
Zip lining is one of the most popular excursions in Costa Rica, and you can definitely do it in the Nosara area. Miss Sky Canopy Tours boasts the longest zip line in Costa Rica. You’ll zip through the trees while enjoying views of Ostional Beach and the Nosara River. The best way to experience this tour is to go directly through Miss Sky, and you’ll want to email for current pricing. They have one tour in the morning and one tour in the afternoon.
Waterfall Chasing
Some of the best waterfalls in Costa Rica are in the Guanacaste prvince, and there are several waterfalls in the Nosara area. The most famous is the Mala Noche Waterfall. It’s in the mountains not far from the actual town of Nosara, and you can get there by horseback, hiking, or ATV.
With an abundance of tide pools near right near the shore, Nosara and its surrounding beaches offer great places to snorkel. The San Juanillo bay is the most popular place to take a snorkeling tour- make sure to stay for low tide to see the land formation that is similar to the Whale’s Tail in Uvita.
Enjoy the sunset at any of the local beaches. Our favorite way to do so is to grab a 6 pack of Imperial and a couple of beach chairs and settle in for nature’s spectacular magic. You can hike up to the Mirador for spectacular views of the entire beach, or you can enjoy a beachside cocktail at La Luna.
When is the best time to visit Nosara?
The short answer is that any time is a great time to visit Nosara! It’s easier to get to Nosara in the dry season, and dirt roads can become muddy and slippery in the rainy season.
How long should I stay in Nosara?
If you want to do many activities and see a lot of different beaches then I recommend a week. A minimum stay would be three nights.
What’s the best way to get to Nosara?
Most people drive to Nosara in order to have the flexibility to travel in and around the town with ease. You can also take a public bus or even a domestic flight.
