What to Consider when Choosing a Travel SIM card

Each of the leading Singapore telcos offers a variety of prepaid sim cards that cater specifically to tourists. These SIM cards include data, text messages and local and international call minutes.

Some also offer international roaming in certain neighbouring countries, which can be useful if you are heading on elsewhere after Singapore.

When comparing SIM cards, consider the following factors:

  • Data allowance : Make sure the plan provides enough data for your needs . Consider what you will use it for – some social media apps such as Instagram and YouTube can eat through a lot of data quickly. Opting for a package with a large data bundle will help avoid inconvenient mid-trip top-ups.
  • Coverage : Ensure the SIM card offers strong coverage in the areas you plan to visit. The major Singapore SIM card providers generally offer good coverage, but it’s always wise to double-check.
  • Roaming options : Some Singapore SIMs offer international roaming , which is handy if you plan to head elsewhere after Singapore. Or you want to use up unused data when you get home. Different providers offer different options with regard to the different countries available and the quantity of data allowance.
  • Validity period : Choose a SIM with a suitable expiry date to match your trip length. Keep in mind that some tourist SIM cards have shorter validity periods.
  • Price : Compare the costs of different SIM cards to find one that fits your budget . Be sure not to sacrifice essential features for the sake of saving a few dollars.

Who are Singapore’s Leading Mobile Operators?

Singapore has three leading mobile internet providers: These are

All of these telcos offer great options for tourist SIM cards in Singapore.

Singapore’s mobile network landscape is advanced, with most providers offering impressive 4G speeds and an expanding 5G network. So, you’ll have a seamless mobile internet experience during your visit.

Bear in mind that the available frequencies in Singapore for mobile communication are 900MHz, 1800MHz, and 2100MHz, which means your phone should be compatible with these to take full advantage of the mobile internet services provided by Singaporean operators.

About eSIM

Another trend to watch for is eSIMs. As eSIM technology grows in popularity, more devices and plans now support it, providing another way to access data without needing a physical SIM card .

Instead of using a traditional SIM card, eSIM allows you to activate your eSIM data plan via email and use it immediately. This is a convenient option as it lets you switch between carriers seamlessly without needing to swap out a physical SIM card.

However, it is worth noting that a physical SIM card that you insert into your device often offers better data allowances and lower costs.

Also check that the eSIM offers local and/or international calls if this is important to you, as they are often data only. You also need to ensure your mobile device is eSIM compatible.

In summary:

  • eSIMs allow you to activate your data plan via email
  • You don’t need a physical SIM card
  • Physical SIM cards often offer better value packages that eSIMs
  • Some travel eSIMs are data only, without call allowances
  • You need to ensure your mobile device is eSIM compatible

Recommended eSIM

  • M1 $12 Tourist eSIM : Valid 15 days. Offers 100GB local 4G data, 100 local SMS, 500 minutes local calls, 20 minutes international calls. No data roaming.

Where to Buy a SIM Card in Singapore

You can easily find SIM cards at the airport, various convenience stores like 7-Eleven, and in shopping malls around the city.

We recommend buying one online, and then you can collect it upon arrival at Changi Airport.

Required Documents to Buy a SIM Card

To buy a SIM card as a tourist, you’ll need to present your passport  as proof of your identity. It’s a mandatory requirement for purchasing a SIM card in Singapore.

Your passport helps the retailer verify your identity and ensures that only genuine tourists access the tourist SIM card options.

How Do Singapore SIM Cards Work?

When you purchase a Singapore prepaid SIM card, the first thing you need to do is activate it by inserting the card into your phone. This process is straightforward; just follow the instructions provided in the sim card packet, or ask the store staff for assistance.

Once you’ve done this, you can immediately start using the preloaded credit to make calls, send texts, and use mobile data.

Important tip : Make sure that your smartphone is  unlocked  for you to use the available local SIM cards in Singapore. Locked phones are restricted to one network provider, making it impossible to switch to other carriers while in the country.

If your smartphone is locked, contact your carrier to unlock it before heading to Singapore.

How to Top-Up Your SIM Card

Once you have your SIM card, topping up your credit is a breeze. You can find top-up cards of various denominations at 7-Eleven stores, the service provider’s stores, and even newsstands.

These cards usually have a hidden number and PIN, which can be revealed by scratching off the protective coating.

To top-up your SIM, follow the instructions provided on the top-up card. These instructions include straightforward steps to input the card number and PIN.

In addition to physical top-up cards, you can also use online top-up services or apps provided by SIM card providers. Online top-ups often make it easy to track your balance and monitor your usage throughout your stay in Singapore.

To do this, simply visit your provider’s website, create an account or log in, and follow the guided prompts to add your desired top-up amount.

Apps for SIM Management

When you get a tourist SIM card in Singapore, you can also download apps for managing your SIM.

These apps make it easier for you:

  • Check your account balance
  • View remaining data, talk time and SMS
  • Top-up or purchase data bundles easily

For example, if you choose the M1 Prepaid Tourist SIM, you can download the  M1 Prepaid App from the Google Play or Apple App Store.

Likewise, if you opt for a Singtel Prepaid SIM card, you can manage your account with the  Singtel Prepaid hi!App and Starhub has the Starhub Prepaid App.

Prepaid vs Postpaid SIM cards

Prepaid SIM cards  are a popular choice for tourists because they offer flexibility and convenience. With a prepaid SIM card, you have complete control over your expenditure, as you only pay for what you use in advance.

Additionally, you can easily top up your account when needed. This option eliminates the worry of unexpected charges and can conveniently be purchased upon your arrival in Singapore.

On the other hand,  postpaid SIM cards  are usually more suitable for longer stays or for residents. With a postpaid plan, you receive a monthly bill for the services you have used, and these plans often come with contract commitments. This option may be advantageous in terms of more cost-effective data and voice packages, but it also comes with the responsibility of managing and paying monthly bills.

In general, tourists tend to prefer  prepaid SIM cards  as they provide simplicity and freedom from contracts. They allow you to stay connected without being tied down to monthly fees, and it is easy to find  prepaid plans  offering attractive call, data, and messaging packages.

Is Pocket Wi-Fi a good option for Singapore?

While Singapore offers numerous SIM cards for tourists, you might be interested in additional options like a pocket Wi-Fi.

A pocket Wi-Fi is a portable device allowing you to stay connected to the internet without using a local SIM card . They are especially useful when travelling with a group or as a family, as multiple devices can connect to the same pocket Wi-Fi, without purchasing multiple plans.

However, they don’t allow you to make local or international calls.

For a Pocket WiFi, you usually pre-pay online and it will be delivered to your accommodation. You will need to post it back at the end of your trip.

Click here to read more about Pocket WiFis and order one online.

Useful Apps for Singapore

Once you’ve chosen your SIM card, it’s time to download some useful apps for navigating Singapore . Just remember to track your data usage to avoid running out!

The city has an excellent public transport system, and using apps like MyTransport.SG or CityMapper can make getting around much more manageable.

Other navigation apps worth downloading are Grab and Gojek , which provide taxi and ride-hailing services similar to Uber.

Singapore is also known for its diverse food scene. Use apps like Chope or Burpple to locate restaurants and cafes in your vicinity. They offer reviews, ratings, and even discounts for specific eateries, helping you choose the perfect spot for your taste buds.

The Best 5G eSIM/SIM in Singapore for Tourists

singapore tourist esim

Speed, coverage, value — here’s the eSIM/SIM we’d recommend to friends visiting Singapore .

Gardens by the Bay Supertrees - Singapore Itinerary

Singapore might be small, but I’ve to say we’ve got a lot to offer for our (comparatively) small square footage.

I mean, aside from futuristic landmarks like Marina Bay Sands and Gardens by the Bay, cultural spots like Chinatown, and a pretty competitive and vibrant food scene , there’s always an exciting event coming up.

Visiting for the Formula 1 Grand Prix (held 15 Sep – 17 Sep this year), or one of the six-show Taylor Swift and Coldplay concerts happening in 2024? 🥳

Then first things first, let us show you how to best stay connected in Singapore with Singtel’s new 5G Tourist eSIMs .

Traveller at Singapore Changi Airport - New Zealand Road Trip

I don’t know about you but if eSIM is an option, it’d be my go-to choice for travelling. For those who are unfamiliar with eSIMs, it’s basically a digital version of a SIM card.

The first time I used an eSIM was on a trip to Japan . I had it activated at home before the flight, and I had access to data right upon landing in Sapporo.

Gone are the days of looking for SIM card shops, or fumbling with the swapping of your physical SIM card. Not to mention sometimes losing your original SIM card and having to replace it after returning home.

In case your mobile phone isn’t compatible with eSIMs, here’s a carrier that provides physical SIM cards too 🙂

Singtel’s tourist SIM/eSIM plans start from 100GB! Yes, you won’t even have to ask for WiFi passwords while you’re in Singapore.

Singtel 5G’s connectivity

Planning to take public transport in Singapore? Chances are, you’ll be taking the underground MRT. And while many networks tend to lose connectivity on the trains, Singtel 5G is the first in the world to achieve nationwide coverage . This means you’ll stay connected even underground.

Ookla Speed Test - Best 5G Tourist SIM-eSIM in Singapore

Fun fact: You can download 4K movies in less than 2 minutes as Singtel’s 5G network has 10x faster speeds than 4G. It was also named 2022’s fastest 5G network in South-East Asia and Oceania by Open Signal (the global standard for 5G network benchmarks).

Singtel 5G also has two times lower latency, which means faster response times with less loading and waiting. You’ll also enjoy better bandwidth — video calls, movie and music streaming at top quality 🥳

And lastly, Singtel 5G offers better security protection — meaning it blocks cyber threats at the network level.

Data Roaming

The Singtel 5G tourist eSIM/SIM cards also cover roaming in Australia , Indonesia , Malaysia , and Thailand ! That means you won’t have to buy another SIM card if you’re headed to these destinations.

P.S. Check out our guides and itineraries if you’re heading to these destinations!

DON’T stress about your phone service when you travel abroad! I used Holafly to travel home to California this year. The instructions were super easy to follow and I had no problems with the service for the whole 20 days that I used it. It was nice not to worry about how much my phone company was going to charge me for service abroad.

Frequently Asked Questions about the Singapore eSIM

When does my data plan begin?

Your plan activates immediately upon connecting your eSIM to any supported network. For example, if you bought a 1-day plan and you activate your plan at 10 AM, it remains active for a full 24 hours, concluding at 10 AM the following day.

Can I make phone calls and send messages with my Holafly eSIM?

The Singapore eSIM only allows you to use mobile data. It does not include a local phone number for mobile calls or messages. You can still make calls using apps like WhatsApp.

Which devices work with the eSIM card?

You can check if your smartphone is eSIM compatible here.

When will I receive my eSIM?

Once you purchase your eSIM, you will receive a confirmation email with instructions to install it immediately using a QR code or manual code. Remember that once the eSIM is purchased, it cannot be returned.

Can I keep my WhatsApp number?

You don’t need to do anything to keep your WhatsApp number. You’ll automatically keep your number, contacts and conversations.

How quick is the Holafly eSIM?

The Holafly eSIM offers maximum speed coverage (4GLTE). But bear in mind that in some areas of limited coverage there may be a lower speed connection.

Do I have to activate data roaming on my device?

Yes. To ensure that your eSIM gets the best coverage, you must turn on data roaming on your mobile settings. This will not incur any additional charges, as long as you have already set up the Holafly eSIM.

What do I do if I delete or lose my eSIM’s QR code?

If you cannot find the code, please contact our 24/7 customer support team at [email protected] or our online chat function. We will resend the code to your email.

What happens if I use up my data or my days of validity?

If you use all your data or run out of days, your eSIM card will no longer work and you will lose internet connection.

What eSIM data plan should I choose for Singapore?

Whichever is available for your destinations and suits your travel needs better! You can choose plans from 1 to 90 days.

Could the internet speed with my Holafly eSIM be reduced?

In a rare scenario, yes. Operators enforce an international measure called Fair Usage Policy to ensure fair internet usage and allow all users to enjoy optimal connection. This measure might be applied for a period of no more than one (1) day. It’s beyond Holafly’s control, but don’t worry! If this measure affects you, the restriction will be lifted the next day, and you’ll have your original plan speed back.

What is an eSIM?

An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a digital SIM card that can be installed directly into your smartphone or other mobile devices. It is an alternative to the physical, removable SIM card you’re used to.

Can I renew or extend the data on my eSIM?

Yes, you can do so by logging into your customer panel on the Holafly Center. You will find the data plans you can purchase there. Once you’ve made your purchase, it will be activated immediately on the eSIM you have linked.

Can I share data with other devices?

Certainly! With the Singapore eSIM, you have the capability to share up to 500MB of data per day across devices by creating a WiFi connection using your smartphone. Refer to your device instructions for guidance on setting up a WiFi connection via a mobile hotspot.

How do I set up the eSIM on my device?

After your purchase, we will send a QR code and manual instructions to your email. Either print the QR code or open it on your computer. On your cell phone, go to Settings > Mobile Data > Add Data Plan and scan the QR code. Your phone will allow you to assign a specific name to this data plan. You will now be able to switch between your Holafly data plan and the original plan from your provider. The Holafly data plan will only be operational once you arrive at your destination. Once you land, turn on data roaming on your cell phone settings and activate the Holafly data plan. Consult your phone’s user manual for more details on adding a data plan. All eSIM products come with comprehensive set-up instructions.

When should I set up my eSIM?

Set up your eSIM before your departure. Once you reach your destination, just activate the data plan turning on data roaming. We recommend you print the QR code to take it and manual instructions with you on vacation, just in case. Remember that you need internet access to install the eSIM.

How can I check my data balance?

You can manage your eSIMs and access all purchased data plans by logging into your Holafly Center through the Holafly website.

How many times can I use my eSIM card?

If needed or when changing phones during your trip, you can transfer your eSIM. However, note that you can only transfer the eSIM to two devices—the original one and a new one. Once you’ve installed it on a different device than the original, you won’t be able to reinstall it on the original device and you must deliver the eSIM from the original device to install it in the second device.

Can I delete the Holafly eSIM once I’ve used my data?

Yes! But keep in mind that you don’t need to do so. As soon as your plan expires your eSIM will no longer work.

Can I use my SIM card and Holafly eSIM at the same time?

If you are using an Apple device, you can use your SIM card and your eSim at the same time. Choose the Sim card for phone calls and SMS, and Holafly eSIM for data from your device. Please remember that if you leave your Sim card activated, your network provider may apply data roaming charges to receive or make phone calls as well as SMS.

How do I get a refund?

At Holafly we are aware that our users may have unforeseen events after making the purchase. Therefore, you can request a refund in the following circumstances: – You bought the eSIM without checking the compatibility with your cellphone. – You canceled your trip or you no longer need the eSIM. – Our eSIMs generally work fine, but if you experience connection issues, we can provide you with a full or partial refund. Once the refund is approved, you will receive the money on to the same account with which you made the payment. This process can take between 5 to 10 business days. Note that these are just some of the travel eSIMs you can find on esimdb.com . I recommend that you check out the whole list of prepaid eSIM for Singapore in the link below before deciding what to buy. You might find other interesting ones.

Ok, let's go.

singapore tourist esim

Nomad offers one of the best Singapore eSIMs not only in price, but also in ease of use.

eSIM plan prices

As of this writing, their plans and prices are:

  • 1GB / 7 Days : $5 ($5 /GB)
  • 2GB / 30 Days : $10 ($5 /GB)
  • 3GB / 30 Days : $13 ($4.3 /GB)
  • 5GB / 30 Days : $15 (($3 /GB)
  • 10GB / 30 Days : $21 ($2.1 /GB)
  • 20GB / 30 Days : $30 ($1.5 /GB)

And in case you haven't used before...

They also have APAC regional plans that work in Singapore. The list of their plans can be found on esimdb.com/singapore/nomad .

Although using the promo code ESIMDB3 makes pretty much all their plans quite attractive, 3GB or higher plans would make more economical sense I'd say.

For instance, 5GB plan would be $12 with the promo code which seems quite reasonable and compelling for those who are staying less than a week.

Note that their eSIM is for data only. No voice / sms supported.

How to buy and use Nomad eSIM

Speaking of ease-of-use, both their website and mobile apps are well-designed and intuitive. So it should not be difficult at all but the article below explains how to buy & install an eSIM from Nomad step by step.

singapore tourist esim

Their app is available for iOS and Android.

You can install their eSIM directly from Nomad app without QR code which is an extra point in terms of ease-of-use of Nomad.

Test review in Singapore

I've tested Nomad eSIM in Singapore in October 2022. I bought their 2GB plan (since it was just for testing) and installed the eSIM, activate the data plan the day before my trip. Everything was smooth.

The local network it connected to was Singtel and it was LTE .

singapore tourist esim

Coverage was perfectly fine . No dead stops wherever I went.

In terms of the actual speed, below are the results from the speed tests I conducted multiple times across the country's touristy areas.

Left: Changi Airport, Middle: near the Merlion (the lion head statue), Right: Universal Studios in Sentosa.

singapore tourist esim

It uses roaming network through Hong Kong, thus the Ping (latency) of around 70 ms which is within acceptable range in my opinion.

I felt that the network was a bit jammed near Universal Studios (the one on the right) but other than that, the connectivity was quite pleasant throughout my stay in the country. Nothing to complaint.

Personal Hotspot (tethering) can be used with this Nomad eSIM which is a plus for "nomad" workers / travelers.

In case you happen to need more data on the go, you can purchase additional data plans easily via Nomad app (mobile / web).

Nomad eSIM recap

✅ Competitive pricing with promo code ESIMDB3

✅ Well-designed and easy to use website and mobile apps

✅ Good coverage on Singtel and stable connectivity with decent latency

singapore tourist esim

Truphone has been around since the early days of prepaid eSIM and is indeed one of the major players in the travel eSIM market.

Some people might be familar with their name from Apple SIM.

Singapore plans & prices

They've started offering very competitive rates since the first half of 2022. And their prices for Singapore are as follows.

  • 100MB / 1 Day : Free
  • 1GB / 1 Day : $5
  • 2GB / 30 Day : $9
  • 5GB / 30 Day : $14
  • 10GB / 30 Day : $20
  • 20GB / 30 Day : $30

singapore tourist esim

Additionally,

Their 5GB, 10GB and 20GB plans are especially cheap, and even so with the above discount code.

Note that they set prices for each major currencies so if you are to purchase in a currency other than USD, the actual price may be slightly different.

How to use Truphone eSIM

Truphone only offers their eSIM / data plan for purchase from their mobile apps. It's available on App Store and Google Play Store .

If you are thinking to try their eSIM for the first time, this article will help you picture how the entire process would look like.

singapore tourist esim

Buying their data plan should be simple and straightforward, although their app is not particularly well-designed.

Testing in Singapore

To be added.

But it should be pretty much the same as Nomad eSIM since Nomad uses Truphone as their network provider when it comes to Singapore.

Truphone eSIM recap

✅ Affordable prices with promo code ESIMDB10, especially for 5GB+ plans

✅ Easy purchase and eSIM installation through their app

✅ Reputable and widely-used service

singapore tourist esim

SimOptions sells a variety of prepaid eSIMs. The one called Smart Traveller eSIM would be a best choice for Singapore for most people.

Smart Traveller eSIM covers 27 countries including Singapore, United States, Hong Kong, Israel, etc. and is priced at $17.90 as of this writing.

It comes with 6GB (valid for 10 days) so the price per GB is $3.

This eSIM is a "packaged" product so does not come with an app for you to check data balance. It does not support data top up (you can just buy two or more if need more data).

You can buy their eSIM products directly from their official website . It should be fairly straightforward but you can find the instructions on how to purchase their eSIM in the link below.

singapore tourist esim

Detailed test review to be added later.

FYI, below is an article about this Smart Traveller eSIM tested in Malaysia, a neighboring country of Singapore, for your reference.

singapore tourist esim

TL;DR, it's a roaming eSIM from dtac.

SimOptions eSIM recap

✅ Several roaming eSIM products available that cover multiple countries (and you might be able to test it in your home country before flying to Singapore)

✅ Smart Traveller eSIM for $17.90 has the best value for money that comes with 6GB of data (valid for 10 days)

✅ No application to manage their eSIM but works out of the box

✅ Smart Traveller eSIM is a roaming eSIM from dtac - Thai telco with decent network speed expected

singapore tourist esim

eSIM2Fly is another packaged roaming eSIM product provided by AIS - Thai telco.

AIS SIM2FLY eSIM Asia Plan comes with 6GB of mobile data that is valid for 8 days, and is priced at $18. But,

So it will be $17 with the discount .

It works in 34 countries including most of the countries in Asia and Pacific region, as well as some other countries like United States, Qatar, and Kuwait. This means if you are in one of those countries you can activate it and use it before or after your trip to Singapore. Pretty convenient.

How to buy eSIM2Fly

You can purchase their eSIM on the website esim2fly.com .

The article below gives you a good understanding on how to buy an eSIM from their website with the discount code ESIMDB .

singapore tourist esim

They send follow-up emails after the purchase on how to install eSIM, tips & troubleshooting, etc.

I've tested one of their SIM2Fly eSIM in Oct 2022 with my iPhone 13 Pro.

Once it's installed in your device, all you have to do upon your arrival is turn on Data Roaming and set it for Cellular Data.

It connects to Singtel 5G in Singapore.

singapore tourist esim

Singtel coverage was perfectly fine during my trip. I had reception in subways, skyscrapers, even most of the elevators I took.

And I did a couple of speed tests for this eSIM too.

In the screenshot below, left one is at Changi airport, the one in the middle is near the Merlion, and the right one is near Universal Studios in Sentosa.

singapore tourist esim

Apart from the upload speed in Sentosa, the speed was generally good or at least acceptable I would describe. It was totally usable for travel purposes (Maps, Grab, social meda, etc.).

Latency was within my acceptable limits too. Roaming via Thailand is not too bad when you are in Singapore.

FYI, you can use Personal Hotspot (tethering) with this eSIM.

To check data balance, use myAIS app or simply dial *111*6# to receive a short message.

eSIM2Fly recap

✅ Wide country coverage (34 countries in Asia Pacific and beyond)

✅ One simple plan (6GB for 8 days) with 1$ discount code ESIMDB

✅ Singtel 5G with stable connectivity and good reception

In this article, I hand-picked travel eSIMs worth checking out with people who would visit Singapore for a couple of days to a week with normal internet use / activities in mind. For those who need an eSIM for longer period of time or much more data for work, please do your own research on esimdb.com to find the best suited plan for your mobile internet needs.

Thanks, and safe travel!

What's The Best eSIM For Singapore? We've Ranked the Top Providers in 2024

Known for its blend of East Asian cultures and cosmopolitan city life, Singapore isn't popular with tourists without reason. If you're planning to visit the country soon, it should come as no surprise that you won't be able to call, SMS, or access the web on the go with your smartphone as you usually would at home, and if you do manage to get connected via roaming, it can result in hefty additional charges.

However, none of this means you should leave your smartphone at home. If your device is a newish model (i.e., from 2019 or later), there's a good chance it'll support an eSIM. These nifty digital SIM cards can be downloaded and installed before you travel, promising blazing-fast internet in Singapore at a very low cost compared to roaming and great convenience compared to physical SIMs. In this guide, we explore everything you have to know about eSIMs in Singapore and what the best deals might be for you.

Dodge sky-high roaming costs, unexpected data charges, or spotty service on your trip to Singapore by using an eSIM from Airalo to connect directly to local network providers like Singtel.

✨ If you're a new customer, use code MONITO15 to get 15% off your first Airalo eSIM, and if you're a returning customer, use MONITO10 to get 10% off today! Go to Airalo now to get started.

As we'll explore in more depth in this guide, when choosing an eSIM, you have two options. The first option is for you to go through a digital eSIM provider, and the second option is to purchase an eSIM directly from your network provider or carrier. We strongly recommend the first option. After all, with reputable online providers, you can always be sure you'll get good support, excellent rates, and quality instructions that normally exceed those of the big carriers.

According to our review and comparison of the best options on the market, here are the three best eSIM providers for Singapore and other countries worldwide:

Best Overall: Airalo

Airalo  is an excellent eSIM provider for Singapore . Its online platform offers global access to eSIMs through collaboration with big local telecom providers. In Singapore, for example, Airalo works directly with Singtel to provide you with high-speed coverage directly from their networks, wherever you are in the country.

Once-off prices for eSIMs for Singapore range from $4.50 to $26 and include between 1 GB and 20 GB of data. Ordinary travellers should be able to get by with these amounts without any problems. Setting up and activating your eSIM happens entirely on your smartphone, and it's very quick. In our test, we just took two minutes (watch our how-to video on YouTube to see how it's done). Moreover, you can easily top this up via the Airalo app if you start running low on data during your trip. This lets you save time and hassle compared to buying a physical SIM, where you'd usually need to stand in line at the counter to buy or top up your card or package.

We recommend Airalo in general, especially if you travel often. The service provides an excellent connectivity companion while you're abroad. To learn more about this excellent eSIM provider, look at our in-depth Airalo review .

Considering Airalo? Take advantage of the following special offers until the 31st of December 2024:

  • New customer? Use the code   MONITO15   to claim a 15% discount on all Airalo eSIMs.  Ts & Cs  apply.
  • Returning customer? Use the code  MONITO10  to claim a 10% discount on all Airalo eSIMs.

Go to Airalo now to get started! ✨

Best For Unlimited Data: Holafly

Holafly  is another trusted eSIM service which only provides packages with unlimited data to dozens of countries worldwide. Although these packages cost quite a bit more than the smaller Airalo packages, in return, they offer the certainty that you'll never use up all your data.

For trips to Singapore, Holafly's data packages cost between $21 and $139 once off and are valid from five to 90 days. Like Airalo, Holafly also works with domestic carriers, so you'll get coverage like a local no matter where you travel in the country (although in remote regions, coverage can become spotty).

Although Holafly offers unlimited data in most countries, including Singapore, if you're a globetrotter, it's worth keeping in mind that Holafly offers limited data plans to some other destinations. Be sure to check their website or app before traveling to a new country to confirm whether Holafly's unlimited packages apply.

Although Holafly's packages are generally great if you'd like uncapped access to the web, it's worth remembering that most travellers don't usually need such a large sum of data and that normally, 5 GB to 10 GB, at most, should be enough for everyday travel needs in Singapore like navigating, browsing, and using social media. Moreover, your speeds might be temporarily throttled if you use a very extensive amount of data (e.g., for non-stop HD streaming or downloading large files). During our test in the UK, this happened to us at around 4.5 GB of usage. Sadly, Holafly's fair use policies don't clearly outline when networks throttle speeds since it comes down to the individual network or carrier and the country you're browsing in.

If you're curious, we tested Holafly extensively to see if its data plans really live up to their 'unlimited' promise. The short answer? Yes, but there are a few things you should know. Take a look at our Holafly review to find out what they are.

Considering Holafly? Use the code  MONITO  at checkout to claim a 5% discount on all Holafly eSIMs. Go to Holafly now to get started! ✨

Best For a Free 100 MB Test: GigSky

singapore tourist esim

GigSky is a popular US-based eSIM provider that offers a unique opportunity: it lets you download and install a free eSIM with 100 MB of allowance so you can test how eSIMs work without being obligated to pay more once you've used up your data.

Like Airalo, GigSky offers fixed data plans (normally just 1 GB, 3 GB, or 5 GB) in around 200 destinations worldwide, including Singapore. And like Holafly, it also offers unlimited plans. In addition, GigSky offers regional and global plans, with all of its data allowances competitively priced and its rates neck-in-neck with those of the other providers on this list.

Most interestingly (unlike Airalo and Holafly), Gigsky offers special data plans for flights and cruises . Although they're pricier than the normal plans, they could be useful for you if you'd like to connect in the air or at sea.

Regardless of what kind of data plan you're looking for, GigSky probably has you covered—and at great rates to boot. Sign up now for a no-obligation free 500 MB and top up your data later if you need more.

Considering GigSky? Use code MONITO10 at checkout to get 10% off your purchase. Go to GigSky now to get started! ✨

Another Reliable Alternative: Yesim

singapore tourist esim

A smaller and newer company than Airalo and Holafly, Yesim  is a Swiss-based eSIM provider offering highly-rated eSIMs for countries around the globe. Their website and app are simple, straightforward, and easy to use, and over 300,000 customers have chosen their eSIMs so far.

Like its larger competitors, Yesim gives you a SIM card connecting to local carriers while you're abroad. It can be installed quickly and effortlessly right from the app or via a QR code sent to your email after purchase. Interestingly, alongside its eSIM service, Yesim also offers a virtual number service that allows you to get an online-only US (+1), Canadian (+1), or Israeli (+972) mobile phone number to use for apps like WhatsApp, Telegram, Instagram, OpenAI, Binance, Tinder, or TikTok. These virtual numbers can be used for a flat fee of $2.75 per month.

Going back to eSIMs, Yesim's packages typically cost between $7 and $28 for 3 GB to 20 GB, but only the 10 GB and 20 GB data plans last longer than 30 days (some plans up to 60 days are possible to purchase). In our opinion, this makes Yesim's offers slightly less attractive than Airalo's for travel in general.

However, it's worth remembering that Yesim's prices are often fractionally lower per gigabyte, so if you're looking for the best deal, make sure you visit Yesim's website and compare their prices to Airalo's,

How Do They Compare?

In the chart below, we've compared Airalo, Holafly, and Yesim based on a few factors you might find important on your trip to Singapore or anywhere else in the world. As you'll see, the three are very competitive, with differences normally being slight. If you'd like to compare Holafly and Airalo directly, take a look at our side-by-side review of the two too.

Do I Need a SIM Card in Singapore?

No, you don't need a SIM card as a tourist in Singapore, but having one will enable you to make phone calls and SMSes and not to rely solely on public or hotel WiFi to access the web.

A good place to start would be to review your contract from your mobile network provider before you travel to Singapore. Most contracts are limited to use just within your home country (or within the European Union if you live in an EU country). For all other countries, so-called 'roaming charges' typically apply. However, there is one exception: specific contracts sometimes allow you to use your data worldwide. If you have a global internet contract, you can also use it in Singapore without unexpected roaming charges.

💳 Planning to use your credit or debit card on your Singaporean trip? You'll probably pay more than you think in hidden exchange rate fees every time you tap your card or withdraw cash. Get a free global account and debit card with Revolut to avoid these fees and save money. Check out our ranking of the best prepaid travel debit cards to find out more about how you can save.

Otherwise, although precise roaming charges differ according to your network provider, the fees for using mobile internet in Singapore are typically around $2 or $3 per 6 MB (six megabytes) of data used, though they could be higher still. For example, if you wanted to download an average-sized app from the Google Play Store onto your Android smartphone, you'd use around 24 MB and pay $8 to $10 in roaming charges. It should, therefore, be clear that roaming with your regular SIM card in Singapore is generally not worthwhile and can lead to enormous costs. As we'll see in a moment, it's significantly cheaper to purchase a local Singaporean SIM card once you arrive or, better yet, an eSIM before you travel.

What Are eSIMs, Anyway?

Simply put, eSIMs are regular SIM cards that don't require inserting an actual microchip into your device while providing the same benefits. Newer smartphones (but also smartwatches, tablets, and other devices) can be equipped with eSIMs, and since you don't need an actual SIM card to install an eSIM, you can also get one before your trip to Singapore. To do this, all you have to do is visit an online eSIM service, purchase the eSIM you want, and follow the instructions to download and install it onto your device.

Like regular SIM cards, prepaid eSIMs come bundled with a certain fixed amount of data, SMSes, or telephone minutes, which you can use at your leisure while travelling. You get to choose the package you want, and you can generally also extend your eSIM's validity easily right from an app.

Pros of Using an eSIM

In general, eSIMs have numerous advantages and are often a better alternative to using a regular SIM card for most tourists. In our opinion, the most significant advantages include:

  • internet immediately upon arrival in Singapore,
  • no negotiating with SIM card sellers at the airport,
  • transparent and fair pricing,
  • online extension is often possible,
  • credit card payment is possible,
  • local telecom provider networks are used.

In our opinion, there are only a few reasons against using an eSIM when travelling to Singapore (which we'll discuss below), and in most instances, we're sure that it's a far better deal than using your normal SIM card from your home country on Singaporean networks.

Cons of Using an eSIM

As we've already seen, eSIMs have very few drawbacks and are an excellent option for accessing mobile internet on your Singaporean vacation.

However, one disadvantage is the slightly higher upfront cost than physical SIM cards. That said, eSIMs are still comparatively cheap, especially for use in Singapore from abroad. In our opinion, the significantly higher level of comfort and the possibility of having access to the internet immediately upon arrival are worth the extra pennies. Another disadvantage is related to installation, where the process may be unfamiliar to you if you've never installed an eSIM before. However, if you follow the instructions carefully, you'll be fine.

Finally, there's the issue of compatibility: not all devices support eSIMs . If your device was released before late 2019, we recommend double-checking on the internet or contacting a representative from an eSIM service to confirm whether your device is compatible before you purchase an eSIM. In general, the following devices will support eSIMs though:

  • iPhone 11 or later
  • iPhone XS, iPhone XR, or iPhone SE
  • iPad 7th generation or later ,
  • Galaxy S20 or later
  • Google Pixel 3 or later
  • and many other devices (see our full list of compatible devices )

Can I Call From Singapore With an eSIM?

Yes, you can call abroad from Singapore with an eSIM , but once again, using your regular network provider and SIM card could result in surprisingly high calling charges at the end of the month (we've personally encountered as high as $4 per minute!). Fortunately, you can call abroad without the high costs, and there are three ways of doing this. We go through each below:

1. Voice-Over-IP (VoIP) With Data

In most cases, eSIM packages are loaded with mobile data, not with minutes or airtime. However, using your data, you can use web-based apps like WhatsApp, Google Meet, Skype, Telegram, Facebook Messenger, FaceTime and others to stay in touch with family and friends abroad while in Singapore.

2. eSIMs With Airtime

Some eSIM services offer talk and text packages alongside normal data packages. These allow you to make direct phone calls or SMSes via local networks in Singapore to your home country for only a slightly higher fee than regular data packages. Not all eSIM services offer this service though, but some, like Wraptel , do.

3. International Calling Apps

If you plan to make calls from Singapore (or anywhere else abroad) fairly regularly, then your most reliable and affordable option will be to use a third-party app. In our opinion, Rebtel is by far the best service out there , offering low rates and providing you with local Singaporean phone numbers with which you can make calls abroad as though they were completely domestic.

Although it's popular, we typically don't recommend using Google Fi for this purpose unless you plan to go back and forth from the United States regularly (since Google Fi is only available to Americans and will not work if you spend over 90 days abroad per year). In general, Rebtel's rates are more affordable than Google Fi's too. To learn more about our first-hand experience with Google Fi, look at our in-depth review .

Recap: All About eSIMs in Singapore

Are you planning a trip in Singapore, and do you have a modern smartphone? Then, you should certainly at least consider getting an eSIM. In our opinion, they offer almost nothing but advantages and are generally far superior to using your regular SIM card.

To find the right provider for eSIMs in Singapore, you should compare the available options. As we've seen, we recommend looking primarily at the network provider and the price. Depending on how long you want to stay in Singapore, Airalo, Holafly or possibly Yesim are the best choices. To recap, here are what each can offer you:

  • Airalo : Best eSIM for Singapore overall.
  • Holafly : Best eSIM for unlimited data.
  • Yesim : Good alternative to Airalo,
  • GigSky : Best free eSIM to test,
  • Rebtel : Best calling service for international calls.

FAQ About The Best eSIM For Singapore

Yes, eSIMs are safe to use in Singapore. That's because commercial eSIM technology adheres to international security and encryption standards to store and securely access your mobile network information.

Generally, yes, but it depends on your individual needs. While eSIMs offer the advantage of remotely purchasing a SIM before you travel, making them convenient for frequent travellers, physical SIMs might still be preferable for you if you have an older smartphone model, for example.

No, eSIMs generally aren't free, with the cost in Singapore varying based on mobile service providers and their pricing plans. However, GigSky offers you a free 500 MB test on all of its eSIMs, including to Singapore, with no obligation to pay further once you've used the data up. ESIM is also a wonderful choice for travelers

Singapore eSIM:

When visiting Singapore, tourists frequently choose StarHub SIM cards ; however, other options are available, including eSIMs. E-SIMs, or embedded SIMs, are digital SIM cards built into mobile devices like tablets or smartphones.

There are several benefits of using eSIMs as a suitable option for tourists in Singapore, including convenience. With eSIMs, there is no need to insert a SIM card into the device physically, and it can be activated remotely, providing a more convenient experience.

Furthermore, eSIMs offer flexibility, enabling users to switch between carriers or plans, which is particularly advantageous for tourists needing to modify their plan or carrier depending on their location or needs.

Additionally, eSIMs offer superior coverage and connectivity in areas with weak signals since they provide access to multiple networks and carriers. Lastly, eSIMs are environmentally friendly as they eliminate the need for physical SIM cards, which can generate e-waste.

Note: It is important to do your own research and compare the different mobile operators and plans available in Singapore to find the best option for your needs and budget.

XIII. Final Words

To sum up, StarHub provides a range of eSIM and SIM card choices for both residents and visitors in Singapore, making it a dependable option for those needing a mobile operator. The company’s strong market position is attributed to its emphasis on innovation, diverse options for visitors and locals, significant investment in infrastructure, and sustainable and environmentally responsible operations.

However, comparing plans and operators is always a good idea to find the best fit for your specific requirements and budget. Whether you are a resident or a tourist in Singapore, having a dependable mobile connection is vital for staying connected and accessing important information and services, making it critical to choose a mobile operator that works for you.

Our expert review:

Specifications

Reasons to buy, reasons to avoid.

Airalo is an excellent eSIM with widespread coverage across the U.S. It offers affordable data plans for use in all 50 U.S. states plus Puerto Rico. You can start with a plan as low as 1 GB and go up to 20 GB. Besides the U.S., Airalo offers eSIM plans in virtually all other countries.

This eSIM doesn’t have strict identification requirements, which makes buying and activating it easier. The tradeoff is that Airalo offers no plan that includes a phone number for SMS and phone calls– any eSIM provider offering a phone number requires identification. However, you can use your data to call via WhatsApp , Skype, and other VoIP apps.

Airalo's plans include $4.50 for 1 GB, valid for 7 days; $8 for 2 GB, valid for 15 days; $11 for 3 GB, valid for 30 days; $16 for 5 GB (30 days); $26 for 10 GB (30 days); and $42 for 20 GB (30 days). The plans are relatively affordable, and you can top up your data if the initial allocation runs out.

As an Airalo user, you can access 24/7 customer support and robust network coverage to make your U.S. trip enjoyable. The main drawback is that, unlike some rival products, Airalo’s eSIM doesn’t offer unlimited data.

Best eSIM for affordability

Website screenshot for Nomad

Nomad is an eSIM marketplace that offers affordable prepaid plans for U.S. visitors. You can opt for a local U.S.-only eSIM or a North American eSIM that works in the U.S. and Canada.

This eSIM connects you to the AT&T and T-Mobile networks across the U.S., giving you a speedy internet connection in virtually all regions. Nomad offers a variety of prepaid plans for your eSIM. You can pay $4.5 for 1 GB for 7 days, $11 for 3 GB for 30 days, $14 for 5 GB for 30 days, $24 for 10 GB for 30 days, or $35 for 20 GB for 30 days.

Nomad also offers a plan of 1 GB per day plus unlimited data at a throttled 512kbps. The cost of this plan depends on the duration, ranging from $4 for 1 day to $22 for 10 days.

With Nomad, you can access AT&T and T-Mobile’s stellar 5G coverage across the U.S. If that isn’t available, you can use 3G or 4G to surf the web. Like its counterparts on this list, Nomad doesn’t offer a phone number for calls or SMS.

Best eSIM for pay-as-you-go

Website screenshot for BNESIM

The BNE eSIM is designed for travelers. It gives you widespread network coverage in the U.S. and many other countries. A good thing about BNE is that you can subscribe to a plan or pay-as-you-go, unlike many eSIM providers that don’t support the latter.

BNE offers data plans ranging from 1 GB to 20 GB. Your data allocation never expires with the pay-as-you-go option, while subscription plans are valid for up to 30 days. The tradeoff is that buying the same data via pay-as-you-go is more expensive than on a fixed plan. For instance, the 30-day 10 GB plan costs $16.10, while the pay-as-you-go (non-expiring) 10 GB plan costs $22.52.

This eSIM’s U.S. coverage is powered by T-Mobile, the country’s third-largest mobile carrier. Once you visit the U.S. with an activated BNE eSIM, you’ll enjoy the same speedy internet services that local T-Mobile customers enjoy.

BNE doesn't require documentation to buy an eSIM, and you can activate it immediately after buying it. However, this eSIM doesn’t include a phone number for calls and SMS.

Best eSIM for voice calls

Website screenshot for GlobaleSIM

4. GlobaleSIM

GlobaleSIM offers affordable eSIM data plans for U.S.-based users. This eSIM gives you speedy internet powered by AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon's network infrastructure. These are the three biggest telecom companies in the U.S., so having access to their networks gives stellar coverage.

GlobaleSIM stands out from other eSIM providers because it offers a phone number for voice calls. You can request a U.S. phone number to call or receive calls from anywhere. However, you must buy voice minutes separate from your data allocation.

You can choose from various plans from this eSIM provider, including $4 for 1 GB for 7 days, $6.5 for 2 GB for 10 days, $8 for 3 GB for 14 days, $10 for 5 GB for 21 days, $17 for 10 GB for 30 days, $26.5 for 15 GB for 30 days, or $32 for 20 GB for 30 days. You can also pay $10 for 100 voice minutes or $17 for 200 voice minutes.

This eSIM is easy to activate and use. You'll receive a QR code by email after paying for your package. Then, scan this QR code to install your new eSIM line seamlessly. Customers have access to 24/7 chat support to resolve their issues.

Best eSIM for network coverage

Yesim landing page

Yesim is a very affordable eSIM with widespread coverage in the U.S. This company has network-sharing agreements with Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile, three of the largest American carriers. Hence, users enjoy unprecedented coverage for a reasonable price.

Unlike the others mentioned earlier, this eSIM offers unlimited data plans. You can pay $25 for unlimited data for 7 days, $47 for 15 days, or $64 for 30 days. Yesim also offers capped data plans ranging from 3 GB to 20 GB. For instance, the 7-day 3 GB data plan costs $13, and the 30-day 20 GB data plan costs $32.

Yesim doesn't require user documentation; you can activate your eSIM immediately after payment. You can activate it by downloading the app or scanning the QR code sent to your email address.

Best eSIM for long term stays

Keepgo esim

Keepgo offers affordable eSIM bundles for U.S. visitors. You can purchase an eSIM that works only in the U.S. or buy a bundle that works in the U.S. and many other countries. Keepgo's Solaris package gives you speedy internet access in the U.S. powered by AT&T and T-Mobile's infrastructure. You can choose from various plans of 100 MB to 50 GB.

We like that Keepgo offers plans of up to 50 GB, unlike most rivals whose fixed plans stop at 20 GB. Access to unlimited data is undoubtedly better, but that isn’t available here.

The best thing about Keepgo is that all its data plans are valid for at least 365 days (1 year). This robust validity period makes Keepgo an excellent option if you plan to stay in the U.S. for a long time.

Best eSIMs for international travel FAQs

What is an esim  .

eSIM, or Embedded SIM, is a digital version of a SIM card. It's embedded directly into your smartphone, eliminating the need for physical SIM cards to be removed and replaced when switching carriers.

With an eSIM, you can join new networks directly from your phone without changing SIM cards. Everything works via software, making connecting to new mobile carriers seamless.

With an eSIM, you can travel across the globe without worrying about getting local SIM cards in each country you visit. Simply switch to a local mobile network via a software interface, and you're good to go.

eSIMs first emerged in the early 2010s, thanks to research funded by the GSM Association (GSMA). However, they didn’t gain widespread popularity in smartphones until 2018, when Apple began making iPhones compatible with only eSIMs. This change led many people to adopt eSIMs, most of whom refused to return to physical SIMs. eSIM device sales are expected to reach 14 billion shipments in 2030, compared to 350 million in 2021.

Why do I need an eSIM when visiting the U.S.?

The global telecoms market is siloed and strictly regulated. The mobile carrier in your country won’t work in the U.S. unless you’re on a roaming plan. However, roaming charges can be steep for traditional telecom networks, potentially running into hundreds of dollars for a short stay. If you want a SIM from a U.S.-based carrier, the documentation and purchase process can be stressful.

The alternative is to get a prepaid eSIM that works in the U.S. You’ll activate this eSIM in your country and start using it once you get to the U.S.

eSIM providers don’t operate their telecom infrastructure in different countries because that would be prohibitively expensive. Instead, they have network-sharing agreements with domestic carriers in various countries. When you buy an eSIM on this list, you’ll access network coverage from their partner carrier in the U.S. This way, you can surf the web seamlessly with the same infrastructure that U.S. residents use.

Is my phone compatible with the listed eSIMs?

Most phones made after 2018 are eSIM-compatible, save for a few exceptions. Since Apple released an eSIM-compatible iPhone in 2018, other manufacturers followed suit to avoid being left behind. You can always confirm eSIM compatibility from your iPhone or Android settings.

For iPhones

  • Open Settings > General > About.
  • Scroll down and find Carrier Lock.
  • If your device is unlocked, it'll show "No SIM restrictions.” If you don’t see this text, that means you need to unlock the device first.
  • Scroll down to Available SIM (or Digital SIM for older iOS versions). If your iPhone is eSIM-compatible, it'll show a 15-digit IMEI number under this section.

For Android phones

  • Open the Settings app.
  • Select About Phone.
  • Look for SIM Status or a similar option.
  • Check for any mention of eSIM or Embedded SIM. If you find it, your Android device is eSIM-compatible. If you don’t find such text, your Android device may not be compatible.

If you’re not still sure, the best option is to check your manufacturer’s website to see if your model is eSIM-compatible.

Factors to consider when choosing a U.S. eSIM package

1. Network coverage

Does your eSIM provide coverage in all 50 U.S. states? Which mobile carrier’s infrastructure does your eSIM give you access to? Can you browse with 5G? These are essential questions to ask when choosing an eSIM.

It’s better to choose an eSIM that gives you access to multiple domestic networks, e.g., Yesim, which has network-sharing agreements with Verizon, T-Mobile, and AT&T. The wider your coverage, the more conveniently you can travel across the U.S. without worrying about an internet connection.

2. Data allowance

What amount of data do you need, and what’s the maximum you can buy with your eSIM? Your data plan depends on the duration of your trip, i.e., the longer your stay, the more data you’ll need. You can choose plans ranging from 1 GB to 50 GB or unlimited in some cases. The good news is that you can always top up your data if your initial allocation runs out.

Different eSIM providers offer different prices, and it’s wise to shop around for the best deal. Always compare similar packages from different providers to see if you’re getting the best deal. For example, if you find a 30-day 10 GB package for $30 from one provider and $20 from another, the latter is worth looking at. The good thing about eSIM packages is that you always know the price beforehand, unlike conventional roaming where you can unknowingly rack up huge bills.
