Meanwhile, Jordan Spieth is 2-over for the tournament with three bogeys to one birdie today. Not looking good for Spieth to make the cut with five holes remaining.

4 p.m.: Scottie Scheffler rebounds from a double bogey to birdie hole No. 11 and get back to even par with seven holes left in his round.

J.J Spaun gets to 10-under par and ties with Sepp Straka for the lead. Tony Finau is one shot back but just hit his ball into the water on hole No. 12. 69 players are 2-under or better.

68 players at 2-under or better. Scottie Scheffler and Jordan Spieth are among a group of players at 1-under par .

1:30 p.m.: Rory McIlroy cannot save par after a wayward drive on No. 9 and falls back to 1-under. Right now, it looks unlikely that McIlroy plays the weekend.

Meanwhile, Sepp Straka finishes with birdies on four of his final holes on the day and has the lead at 10-under after a 4-under 66.

12:30 p.m.: Denny McCarthy's lead is two shots over Brian Harman, who has finished his second round. Harman shot a 4-under 66.

Billy Horschel is even-par with two holes to play and likely needs a pair of birdies to make the weekend. Tom Hoge, Mito Pereira and Sungjae Im are all at 1-under with a few holes to play. 67 players are at 2-under or better.

11:30 a.m.: A surge for Rory McIlroy, who birdies Nos. 1 and 2 to go to 3-under and put some space between himself and the cut.

Emiliano Grillo has back-to-back bogeys to fall one shot behind leader Denny McCarthy.

11 a.m.: Emiliano Grillo is now your leader at 10-under for the tournament, 7-under thru 12 holes today. He's currently bogey-free and one shot ahead of Denny McCarthy.

For those looking at the cutline, it has already moved to 2-under. 66 players are 2-under or better. Rory McIlroy will need play his final nine holes under par to make the weekend, as he's 1-under for tournament after nine.

10 a.m.:   Two-time major champion Collin Morikawa is surging up the leaderboard this morning with four straight birdies on hole Nos. 13-17. He's now 6-under for the tournament.

pga tour leaderboard in memphis

The rains have left Augusta. The hunt for the green jacket at the 88th Masters Tournament is on.

After a 2 1/2-hour weather delay to start the day, Augusta National Golf Club is seeing some birdie binges by players in early groupings as the first wave of stars get into their rounds.

The first shot was struck at 10:30 a.m. after the honorary starters Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player and Tom Watson hit their ceremonial tee shots just before 10.

In an 89-player field with 33 past major champions, unheralded players grabbed everyone's attention before the winds picked up. A top three of Fox, An and Van Rooyen was not what anyone expected so far.

The winner gets a lifetime exemption to the Masters as well as a host of other prizes and exemptions to other tournaments around the world. But that green jacket is the biggest prize of them all.

For a live leaderboard, please visit the USA Today Scoreboard.

Follow along here for updates throughout Thursday.

Tiger Woods makes the turn in first round

Tiger Woods has reached the 10th tee on his first round of the Masters Tournament, and he's 1 under after birdies on Nos. 1 and 8 and a bogey on No. 4.

American Max Homa, who's in Woods' pairing, has gone out in 32 to stand at 4 under. It's a big surprise; Homa has never shot better than 70 at Augusta National in four Masters tournaments and never finished above 43rd.

Meanwhile, Denmark's Nicolai Hojgaard chipped in twice in six holes, converting them into birdies on Nos. 7 and 12 to also be at 4 under.

Scottie Scheffler one off lead after bogey-free round

World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler finished off the only bogey-free round of the day so far, two-putting the 18th hole from the front of the green to complete a 6-under-par 66 that keeps him one shot behind Bryson DeChambeau.

Scheffler made birdies on Nos. 2, 6, 12, 13, 15 and 16 on the day. He pitched in from the back bunker on 12 and despite missing the green to the right on No. 13, he avoided the water and made a birdie on the par 5.

Scheffler avoided the late troubles on Nos. 17 and 18 that took out several other big names. Jon Rahm and Will Zalatoris made bogeys on each, while Rory McIlroy made one on 17 and used a tough up-and-down to avoid another on 18.

Will Zalatoris closes round with back-to-back bogeys

After reaching 4-under following a birdie at the 15th, Zalatoris had bogeys at Nos. 17 and 18 to close his round at 2-under and at T-6 in the clubhouse.

Scottie Scheffler moving up leaderboard on Masters Thursday

Scheffler birdied the par-5 15th hole to improve to 5-under par and move into solo second. He trails only Bryson DeChambeau (7-under).

He stuck his tee shot on the par-3 16th within 3 feet and rolled in a birdie to move to 6-under and one shot back of the leader.

Patrick Cantlay holes out an eagle on No. 17

Cantlay spun in a shot out of the fairway on No. 17 for an eagle that moved him to 1-under for the opening round. He had but one birdie on the round through 16 holes before dropping in the shot from 146 yards.

Rory McIlroy with a birdie to move to 2-under par

McIlroy has had a history of slow starts in Augusta, but a birdie at No. 14 on Thursday moved the Northern Irishman to 2-under par for his round and into a tie for seventh as he continues to chase the career Grand Slam.

Tiger Woods records first bogey of his Thursday Masters round

Woods carried his tee shot long at hole No. 4 and couldn't scramble to par.

He drops to even par for the round after a birdie at the first hole.

Scottie Scheffler catches break at Rae's Creek, birdies No. 13

Scheffler's second shot at No. 15 appeared to find the water of Rae's Creek, but he remained dry enough to chip his third close to the hole. He birdied from there and moved into a tie for the lead at 4-under.

Matt Fitzpatrick gets rolling on second nine at the Masters

Fitzpatrick birdied his way through Amen Corner and is now tied with Danny Willett in second.

After a birdie and bogey to close out his first nine, Fitzpatrick began his second nine at 1-under. He then rolled off three straight birdies to quickly rise up the leaderboard.

Scottie Scheffler holes out from bunker on Hole No. 12

The World No. 1 holed out a birdie from the sand at the back of the 12th green to move to 3-under par and in a tie for third.

Tiger Woods birdies hole No. 1

Tiger Woods got off to a hot start with a birdie on hole No. 1 Thursday at the Masters. He then parred the second and joined 32 players under par.

Bryson DeChambeau fires 7-under 65 to take clubhouse lead

DeChambeau was on fire from the start Thursday , with birdies on his first three holes on his way to the top of the leaderboard. The LIV golfer birdied five of seven holes to close his round, and a bogey on No. 9 was his only blemish of the day. He scrambled to save par on the par-4 ninth hole to close a phenomenal round.

DeChambeau held a 3-shot lead when he finished his round over former Masters champion Danny Willett, Viktor Hovland and Byeong Hun An.

Tiger Woods hits his first tee shot at the 2024 Masters

Woods teed off with a fairway wood at 3:54 p.m. and faded his ball into the wind right down the middle of the fairway. He's off, looking for his sixth green jacket.

Bryson DeChambeau back on top of Masters first round

Bryson DeChambeau once said that, in certain mindsets, Augusta National should be played as a par 67.

With three holes to go Thursday, he's at even par.

The LIV standout and former U.S. Open champion has three birdies on the second nine, including both par 5s, to take over the tournament lead at 5 under.

DeChambeau's career-best round at Augusta is an opening 66 in 2019, and he added a 67 in 2021. But overall, the Masters has vexed the former U.S. Amateur champion. He's never finished in the top 20 in six starts.

Meet Ryan Fox, who leads the Masters first round

Thanks to three early birdies and an eagle on No. 8, Ryan Fox is your leader at the Masters as he makes his way through Amen Corner.

The native of New Zealand is currently No. 54 in the Official World Golf Ranking, his worst spot in nearly two years; he was 28th late in 2023 after a third-place finish at the Irish Open, a win at the DP Tour's BMW PGA Championship and runner-up at the Alfred Dunhill Links within four weeks.

He made the cut in all four majors last year (T26 Masters, T23 PGA, T43 U.S. Open, T52 Open Championship), but has missed five cuts already in 2024 after only missing three all of last year.

In other words, certainly not on many radars for even a longshot bet at Augusta.

The first eagle has landed at the 2024 Masters; Ryan Fox grabs lead

Break out some crystal for Ryan Fox.

He's the first player to make an eagle in the 2024 Masters, carding a 3 on No. 8.

That vaulted him into the lead for the tournament at 5 under through eight holes.

The first half of the field is now on the course. Tiger Woods will be on the first tee in two hours .

A revamped upper left of the green complex on No. 6 has created a comfortable shot for many players early at the Masters.

Canadian Corey Conners, the last man to have a hole-in-one on No. 6 in 2021, put his tee shot within 3 feet to make a birdie.

Two groups later, Georgia native Harris English went within a foot of an ace.

The hole has five birdies midway through the first round and is playing as the seventh-toughest hole on the course as the wind has picked up.

Wind becoming a factor for players at 2024 Masters

The wind is beginning to pick up at Augusta National Golf Club. As of 11:53 a.m., the National Weather Service is reporting gusts up to 24 miles per hour.

Despite that, leader Bryson DeChambeau (3-under through four holes) is among nine players under par to this point. The wind will likely become more of a factor on the second nine, but it will be something to keep an eye on as groups tee off over the next four hours.

Bryson DeChambeau starts hot at 2024 Masters

Bryson DeChambeau has come out of the gates on fire at the 2024 Masters.

The LIV golf member birdied his first three holes on Thursday to quickly move to the top of the leaderboard.

New perspective for Gary Woodland at Masters

Gary Woodland teed off at 11:18 Thursday morning to begin his 2024 Masters.

The Topeka, Kansas native has a new perspective on life after a recent health scare.

What is the weather like in Augusta?

According to the National Weather Service, Augusta received just over half an inch of rain since 1 a.m. Thursday. With the talk of how soft the conditions were in 2020, it seems we won’t be getting a repeat of the November Masters Tournament conditions Thursday.

While the rain was far less than many were expecting, the wind may still be a factor with gusts exceeding 30 miles per hour overnight.

“Hopefully the weather misses a little bit,” Gary Woodland said Wednesday. “Golf is tough enough without the wind, so it'll be a challenge, but one that everybody is going to have to face.”

First pairing tees off to start the 2024 Masters

Erik van Rooyen and Jake Knapp teed off at 10:30 Thursday morning at the first tee and the Masters 2024 tournament is underway.

Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player and Tom Watson kick off Masters 2024

The three golfing legends and Masters honorary starters teed off at 10:10 Thursday morning to kick off a tournament delayed about 2 1/2 hours by weather that swept across Augusta.

Player striped his tee shot down the middle and gave a leg kick in celebration while picking up his tee.

Nicklaus quipped "Watch out on the left and right," before pulling his shot slightly left.

Watson kidded Nicklaus that he had never "hit a hook at this whole in his life," before hitting the middle of the fairway.

Augusta National Chairman Fred Ridley then declared: "Ladies and gentlemen, the 2024 Masters is officially underway. Enjoy the tournament."

When will Tiger Woods tee off? Here are updated Masters 2024 tee times

The pairing of Erik van Rooyen and Jake Knapp will tee off at 10:30 a.m. from the first tee and the opening round will commence from there.

The grouping of Phil Mickelson, Sepp Straka and Tony Finau is now 12:06 p.m. while Tiger Woods will tee off at 3:54 p.m.

The final grouping of Dustin Johnson, Collin Morikawa and Tommy Fleetwood will not tee off until 4:30 p.m.

Jordan Spieth, Ludvig Åberg and Sahith Theegala will tee off at 4:18 p.m.

Other tee times include Rickie Fowler (12:36 p.m.), Hideki Matsuyama, Justin Thomas and Will Zalatoris (12:48 p.m.), Jon Rahm (1 p.m.), tournament favorite Scottie Scheffler along with Rory McIlroy and Xander Schauffele (1:12 p.m.).

When is sunset for Augusta?

Sunset for Augusta is 7:56 p.m.

With the final tee times on Thursday coming at 4:30 p.m., several groupings are sure to have their opening rounds carry over into Friday.

When will the Masters begin today?

The Masters announced that the first round will begin at 10 a.m. Patron gates will open at 9:30 a.m. with honorary starters teeing off at 10:10 a.m.

2024 Texas Open leaderboard, grades: Akshay Bhatia nets second PGA Tour win, last Masters invite in playoff

Bhatia's victory means the 2024 masters field is now official.

akshay-bhatia-round-4-valero-g.jpg

There was nothing stress-free about Akshay Bhatia's victory at the 2024 Texas Open despite how most of the week looked. Kickstarting his week with a 9-under 63 on Thursday, the lengthy left hander went wire-to-wire at TPC San Antonio for a playoff victory over Denny McCarthy at 20 under. By doing so, Bhatia became the third youngest winner to go wire-to-wire on the PGA Tour since 1983 behind Rory McIlroy at the 2011 U.S. Open and Jordan Spieth at the 2015 Masters.

Speaking of the Masters, Bhatia's victory marks his second in as many years, and it comes at a rather opportune time. Earning the final invitation into the 2024 Masters, the 22-year-old will drive down Magnolia Lane for the first time in his professional career and tee it up in only his second major championship. Bhatia's Masters debut comes a decade after qualifying and playing in the first-ever Drive, Chip and Putt competition at Augusta National.

Not only has Bhatia earned his chance to vie for the green jacket next week, he has solidified his playing privileges on the PGA Tour through the 2026 season. Bhatia will tee it up at the PGA Championship as well as the remaining signature events on the PGA Tour schedule.

"I just stuck to my game plan," Bhatia said. "I played great today. I kind of got the goal in mind today. Denny played unbelievable. You got to give him credit. It's hard because he's one of the best putters out here, and when you see him get hot, it's scary. I had a six-shot lead going into the back nine, and then all of sudden, we are tied going into 18 and then of course he makes that putt. Man, what a crazy crazy day."

Bhatia began the final round at TPC San Antonio in possession of a four-stroke lead -- tying Jake Knapp for the largest 54-hole margin this season. The lead grew to five with a birdie immediately out the gate and was pushed to half a dozen when Bhatia added his third birdie of the round on No. 4.

McCarthy attempted to apply some pressure on the front, but it proved ineffective as Bhatia went to the inward half with his six-stroke lead still intact. A punch finally landed on No. 10 when McCarthy connected from distance for his second birdie of the day and Bhatia failed to get up-and-down from long of the green cutting his lead to four. The drama ensued from there.

After making par on the 11th, McCarthy went unconscious and left Bhatia defenseless. Birdie after birdie came from the blade of McCarthy as he rattled off six in a row and within a blink of an eye, Bhatia's lead of six was cut to zero as the two men stood on the tee at the par-5 18th.

Both facing roughly 12-foot birdie bids, both connected and unleashed fist pumps after both players reached 20 under -- nine clear of McIlroy in third place. McCarthy's final putt in regulation was his 92nd of the week tying a PGA Tour record for fewest amounts of putts in a tournament while Bhatia's made waves for a completely different reason.

An update on Akshay Bhatia's shoulder injury. https://t.co/iYKkZXlTKc pic.twitter.com/U08UYGHmiX — PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) April 7, 2024

Popping his shoulder out of his socket during his celebration, Bhatia called upon the services of his physiotherapist on the first playoff hole. With his ball in the fairway, Bhatia watched as McCarthy approached his third and chunked his wedge into the creek protecting the putting surface.

After getting his shoulder taped, Bhatia stepped to his and safely found the putting surface to all but secure his second PGA Tour victory and a trip to the Masters.

"This is awesome," Bhatia said. "It's hard to win out here as it showed today. My mom's birthday was on April 1, and her wish was to get in the Masters. I'm hoping I make her proud." Grade: A+

Here are the grades for the rest of the notables on the leaderboard at the 2024 Texas Open

3. Rory McIlroy (-11): Oh boy, here we go again. It was an ideal last start for McIlroy ahead of the Masters as he fired a final-round 66 and got the big numbers out of his system. Adhering to the swing advice of Butch Harmon, McIlroy made a conscious effort to eliminate the quick, aggressive left miss and took a huge step in the right direction in terms of his iron play. He ranked third in strokes gained approach thanks to gaining nearly four with his scoring clubs on Sunday alone. Grade: A

"I definitely feel like I'm in a better place than I was a few weeks ago," McIlroy said. "Through the Florida swing, there was just a lot of volatility in my game, some good, some bad, quite a few big numbers, so just trying to tidy that up. For me, I'm always going to be able to hit good shots, it's just how bad the bad ones are, and this week the bad ones were still in play and no too bad, and I was able to scramble well enough when I did hit a few poor ones. Again, overall much more pleased with where my game is compared to two or three weeks ago."

Rory McIlroy: bogey-free 66 today; his best final round leading into the Masters in 10 years. In 2014, he shot 65 on Sunday in Houston - finished T-8 the next week at Augusta. — Justin Ray (@JustinRayGolf) April 7, 2024

T7. Hideki Matsuyama (-8): The 2021 Masters champion is red hot. Matsuyama's last four starts now read: Win, T12, T6, T7. He was once again brilliant from tee to green -- ranking inside the top 20 in each metric -- but did not get as much as he would have liked out of the putter ranking first on the PGA Tour in strokes gained around the green and with his ball striking in tow, Matsuyama has to be on the short list of players who can win next week.  Grade: A-

T10. Jordan Spieth (-6): This week featured just about everything from Spieth -- a hole-in-one, a gutter ball, plenty of birdies and plenty of mistakes. It all added up to a 6-under total for his first top-10 finish since the WM Phoenix Open and put an end to a mini dip in form. Spieth was insistent that his game was close on Thursday, and he flashed glimpses of what may be to come at Augusta National. He's driving the ball great (ranked fourth in strokes gained off tee), and his iron play was much sharper. Surprisingly, his short game has been rather meh in his last three starts, but that should change sooner rather than later. Grade: B

The Jordan Spieth Experience™️ https://t.co/15huJUWoYf pic.twitter.com/xrzHb4EE8f — PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) April 7, 2024

T24. Max Homa (-4): After opening with a 3-under 69, Homa got stuck in the mud and played his next 54 holes in only 1 under. He came into this week needing to answer questions around his driver and he did just that with a couple really solid rounds from off the tee. His iron play is in a comfy spot, and it will need to continue to be if he expects to contend at the Masters for the first time in his career. Grade: C+

T75. Collin Morikawa (+5): Is it time to press the panic button on Morikawa? The two-time major champion made the cut on the number and wasn't able to do much with the opportunity finishing near the bottom of the weekend pack. Morikawa has now lost strokes on approach in three straight tournaments and hasn't clocked a top-five finish since the first week of the year at The Sentry. Without his iron play, Morikawa looks very (very) average. Grade: D

The Masters 2024 LIVE: Leaderboard and latest updates with Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler underway

LIVE – Updated at 19:53

The first men’s golf major of the year has arrived as the best players in the world descend on Augusta National for The Masters , although storms initially delayed the start of day one.

Twelve months after pulling on the famous green jacket for the first time following an emotional victory dedicated to his hero Seve Ballesteros, Jon Rahm returns to defend his title with intrigue added by his blockbuster defection to the breakaway LIV Golf series.

Negotiations continue between the PGA Tour and LIV’s Saudi Arabian backers over a possible partnership but, for now, all eyes will be on the course as Rahm and his fellow rebels such as the always-dangerous Brooks Koepka take on those who have remained on Tour. They include the likes of 2022 winner and this year’s dominant player Scottie Scheffler , Rory McIlroy in pursuit of a career grand slam and the Augusta-suited Jordan Spieth .

Golf legend Tiger Woods is set to play and says he’s targeting “one more green jacket” to take him to 16 major titles despite the pain he faces on the vast majority of shots at Augusta.

Follow live coverage of all the action below and get our tips for the winner here and the best special bets to target here :

The Masters 2024 - live updates

  • The 2024 Masters is underway at Augusta National
  • Play was due to start at 1pm BST, but storms in the area caused a delay until 3.30pm BST
  • Revised round one tee times
  • PREVIEW: Golf’s civil war casts long shadow as Rory McIlroy aims to finally slay Masters demon
  • Jon Rahm is defending the title he won last year and Tiger Woods is playing through the pain

Bryson bounding up the board

Bryson DeChambeau drops another putt on 13, back-to-back birdies taking him to four-under and to within one shot of Ryan Fox at the top of the charts.

On the sixth, Scottie Scheffler has birdie number two of his round. Ominous.

The Masters 2024

The wind is really whipping up at Augusta, which is perhaps contributing to a day of relatively modest scores. Erik van Rooyen’s round has hit a snag, back-to-back bogeys at 14 and 15, but the South African is still reasonably well placed as he and Jake Knapp (E), the first group, tee up on the penultimate hole.

Scottie Scheffler says he will withdraw from The Masters if pregnant wife Meredith goes into labour

Scottie Scheffler heads into the 2024 edition of The Masters as the heavy favourite to win, but with his wife Meredith only weeks away from giving birth to their first child, has left a clear message that he’ll depart at a moment’s notice if necessary.

Scheffler will withdraw from Masters if pregnant wife Meredith goes into labour

A par at the tenth for Ryan Fox, who now has clear air at the top of the leaderboard. Byeong-hun An has lost a shot to tumble to three-under, where he has just been joined by Bryson DeChambeau, whose game looks in good working order. A birdie two at 12 for big Bryson.

Another dropped shot for Rory McIlroy

McIlroy can’t make his putt back down the hill at four. Par, bogey, birdie, bogey for the Northern Irishman.

Rory McIlroy commands his ball to sit as he pitches out of the bunker on the fourth; it obeys like an obedient puppy with a little hop. Still a bit of tidying to be done to ensure that’s a par.

On the back nine, Austin Eckroat is finishing strongly, the winner of the Cognizant Classic powering back having started the day with a double bogey.

A birdie for Rory McIlroy to get back on track at three, but Scottie Scheffler misreads his putt to pass up his birdie chance.

A flying Fox

Leaderboard:

-5 Ryan Fox

-4 Byeong-hun An

-3 Erik van Rooyen

-2 Taylor Moore, Danny Willett, Thorbjorn Olesen, Bryson DeChambeau, Corey Conners

Jon Rahm back to level par

Having birdied the third, a bogey at four draws a shake of the head from last year’s winner, Jon Rahm unable to build upon a solid start.

One hole behind, Scottie Scheffler should soon make it back-to-back birdies, controlling his chipped second superbly.

Byeong-hun An is ticking away rather pleasantly, climbing to four-under with a birdie at eight. It is a long time now since the South Korean announced himself at the US Amateur as a 17-year-old in 2009 to earn his first Augusta appearance, but after three missed Masters in succession, he’s enjoying his return so far.

An eagle has landed!

But Erik van Rooyen does not have the lead for long - the first eagle of the afternoon comes from the club of Ryan Fox, the Kiwi flying to the top of the board at -5 at the par five eighth.

Contrasting fortunes for favourites at the second

A first birdie of the round for Scottie Scheffler, tapping in for a four at the second, but it’s a bogey six for McIlroy, his par putt breaking left late.

And we have our first man to four under - Erik van Rooyen birdies the 13th to take the lead outright.

Nick Dunlap is seeing all that Augusta has to offer on debut, exploring an area few venture to way to the left of the third green. He chips out of the detritus and into a bunker.

Trouble for Rory McIlroy on two

Oh dear. The camera cuts to Rory McIlroy in the shade beneath a thicket of trees, an angle out presenting itself but little progress likely to be made. McIlroy improvises an exit, very nearly striking a caddie in the process. He’s still in the hole, but that wayward drive means there’ll be no birdie.

Rory McIlroy ‘flattered’ as Tiger Woods backs him to win Masters for career slam

Tiger Woods reiterated his belief that Rory McIlroy will definitely win the Masters during his career to complete the grand slam as McIlroy kept his own media duties to a minimum ahead of the start of the tournament.

McIlroy was the last player to register at Augusta National around 30 minutes before his scheduled press conference on Wednesday, which started early and saw the world number two answer just seven questions.

One of those was in response to Woods having earlier insisted it was just a “matter of time” before McIlroy earns a green jacket to join Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan , Gary Player , Jack Nicklaus and Woods himself in having won all four major titles.

Strike Danny Willett’s name from the list of leaders. A bogey at ten for the Englishman, which is not the way he’d have liked to go into Amen Corner.

TOP OF THE LEADERBOARD

-3 Erik van Rooyen, Danny Willett, Christo Lamprecht (a), Bryson DeChambeau, Ryan Fox, Byeong Hun An

-2 Santiago de la Fuente, Thorbjorn Olesen

Cameron Smith is the latest former major champion to get going, his moustache twitching as he strays a little too close to the sand. Fetch the bucket and spade, Cam - in it flies.

No dice for Rory McIlroy further up the first, his birdie putt sliding by.

Rory McIlroy tees off

Lilac trousers and a white polo for Rory McIlroy, taking the club back a couple of times before that familiar, rapid swish through the ball. Huge. Past Scottie Scheffler and in fine position to create a birdie chance.

Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy set to begin

The power-packed playing groups keep on coming: next on to the tee box, Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy and Xander Schauffele, three men that plenty feel could contend this weekend.

Golf’s civil war casts long shadow as Rory McIlroy aims to finally slay Masters demon

Jon Rahm is underway

The defending champion takes a three wood on the first tee, an anxious peer up the fairway as the wind blows his ball about, but that’s as solid as it comes.

Matt Fitzpatrick and Nick Dunlap are alongside Rahm. Fitzpatrick skews left, into the pine needles beneath the thick canopies, while youngster Dunlap’s first shot in anger at Augusta is similarly sloppy, the nerves perhaps showing as he quivers slightly. A call of “fore left” - he and Fitzpatrick trudge to the trees to try and repair the damage.

Willett’s success continues

And the 2016 winner’s day keeps getting better and better: an eagle putt at eight comes up shy but the tap-in birdie takes him into a share of the lead.

Also up there is Byeong-hun An, back at The Masters after a few years away and with three birdies in four holes.

Co-leaders at -3: Bryson DeChambeau, Danny Willett, Erik van Rooyen, Ryan Fox, Byeong-hun An

Danny Willett makes flying start as Masters begins after weather delay

Former champion Danny Willett enjoyed a superb start when the 88th Masters belatedly got under way on Thursday.

Making his first start since undergoing shoulder surgery in September, Willett recorded the first birdie of the week on the opening hole and added another from close range on the third.

Erik van Rooyen joins the leaders

Erik van Rooyen rolls in from just off the ninth green to take the turn at three-under and, for now, in a share of the lead.

Delightful from Danny Willett! That’s a beautiful shot in conception and execution, sending his putt perilously close to the lip of one of the greenside bunkers on the seventh to ensure he catches the inviting slope to the hole. In it drops! He’s back up to two-under.

Ryan Fox shows off both sides of his game, a booming drive into the bunker on the third and a deft clip out of the sand ensuring a third consecutive birdie. Tidy work from the Kiwi, whose dad was pretty handy.

Ryan Fox’s lessons from legendary All Black dad and joining fight to save rhinos

Indeed DeChambeau can. Right in the heart of the cup.

Here’s how things sit with the early starters:

-3 B DeChambeau

-2 E van Rooyen, R Fox,

-1 D Willett and four others

Bryson DeChambeau off to a flyer

Three in three for Bryson DeChambeau! He takes the outright lead with another birdie, though finds the front bunker on four. Can he salvage a par? It’s a decent shot from the sand from the burlyman but still work to do.

A shot gone at the fifth for Danny Willett, losing his share of the lead. His putt slows and fades to the right of the hole. A bogey.

Phil Mickelson was the real surprise of last year’s Masters, rolling back the years to secure a tie for second. His form on the LIV series has been pretty hopeless since, but Lefty likes the big stage, and finds the first fairway.

Birdie, birdie for Bryson DeChambeau, using the slope intelligently to draw his third into scoring range from just off the green at the second hole. Erik van Rooyen has also joined Danny Willett at two-under.

Sergio Garcis is another of the LIV-ites out there, though his start is rather less pretty, the Spaniard refamiliarising himself with Augusta’s arboreal charms. He knocks out onto the fairway.

It’ll be hard to miss Garcia today.

Erik van Rooyen is playing nicely, too. It’s a pleasant enough pin position on six and the South African stands up his shot beautifully, leaving a very makeable birdie putt.

Jake Knapp matches him with an equally nice eight iron.

Bryson DeChambeau is up and way - a birdie at the first for the LIV launcher.

A second birdie in three holes for Danny Willett, making a fine return to action after shoulder surgery so far. If you can get in a groove here, this feels like a good opportunity to score freely, the surfaces still damp from those showers earlier and the greens ever so slightly slower.

A tough start for Gary Woodland, opening with a double bogey. But how great it is to see the American playing just months after brain surgery.

Gary Woodland hits hole-in-one on Masters par three day after brain surgery

Masters tee times: Round 1 groups and schedule including Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods

Here’s a reminder of all of today’s tee times:

But Willett is not alone for long - birdies at three for Erik van Rooyen and Jake Knapp, with Taylor Moore also getting in on the fun at the second. We’re into the swing of things.

Danny Willett into the lead!

Lift off! Danny Willett birdies the first to go to one-under and the early lead.

Still nobody under par at Augusta. Teeing it up next is gentle giant Christo Lamprecht, a big man with a big future. Here’s a little more about the South African amateur.

Who is Christo Lamprecht? Golfing giant competing at The Masters

Par fours across the board for group two, too. The flag is whipping around on that first green, but the skies looks to be brightening slightly, pleasingly.

Out on course in group three is Danny Willett, the 2016 winner ahead of schedule in his recovery from a complex shoulder surgery. It’s good to see him back playing.

Tidy work from Jake Knapp. He and Erik van Rooyen start with pars.

Our first former champion is underway, Jose Maria Olazabal leading the second group off the first tee. The Basque nails his opening drive - he’ll have enjoyed Jon Rahm’s champions dinner on Tuesday night:

A decent approach from Erik van Rooyen, playing short of the flag out of the rough but leaving himself a birdie chance.

Jake Knapp goes at it, hoping that the soggy green will slow his shot. Alas, it appears to catch a gust of wind and bounces through the back, catching on the downslope to leave him a difficult up-and-down.

The Masters 2024 is underway!

Erik van Rooyen is sporting a rather funky pink foral shirt. His club snnaps through the back of the ball, a slight spice sending it into the first cut but that’ll be safe enough..

“Lovely,” Cries the caddy of Jake Knapp as he sends it scuttling up the left side of the fairway. A beaut!

First group out on course

Over to Erik van Rooyen and Jake Knapp to get us up and running. It’s been a year of surprise winners on the PGA Tour, with Knapp among them, his Mexican Open triumph in February earning him a spot here. It’s an Augusta debut for the 29-year-old.

Playing partner Van Rooyen tends to run hot and cold, but he’s mixed at the top of major leaderboards in the past. Can our early starters use the softer surfaces to their advantage?

This particular Augusta tradition has now been running for more than 60 years. Gary Player strikes first, a clean swing and a high kick of his leg as he finds the heart of the fairway.

Jack Nicklaus puts ball on tee to warm applause, his connection clean enough to join Player on the cut stuff just left of centre. Can Tom Watson complete the set? Of course he can, the eight-time major winner and most recent addition to this group with a smooth swing to send his ball hopping on past Player’s.

But before the main field get underway, it’s over to the golfing greats to get things underway. Gary Player, Tom Watson and Jack Nicklaus are making their way out to the first tee for the ceremonial start.

It won’t be long now until we have actual golf to bring you, the morning storms seeming to have blown through, though continuing blustery conditions are sure to cause a few problems. The rain delay has probably counted against some of the late starters, who will be unlikely to conclude their rounds before we lose the light later. That’ll mean making up the holes tomorrow - bad news, you’d say, for Tiger Woods, as he bids to make the cut.

Armchair fan’s quick guide to The Masters at Augusta National

The Masters kicks off golf ’s major calendar this week, with the world’s best players descending on Augusta National .

Here we provide an armchair fan’s guide of what to look out for in Georgia and here are the latest odds and tips .

Sometimes in sport, it’s the near miss, followed by the bravery of getting up to go again, only to miss out once more that leaves the most indelible emotional mark. The repeated hope and optimism, crushed every time, often in increasingly cruel ways, until there are no more chances left.

Maybe this will be the year that Jimmy White finally wins the World Snooker Championship ...? Or the England men’s football team finally win another major tournament ...? Or Ireland finally make it past a Rugby World Cup quarter-final ...?

Or Rory McIlroy finally wins the Masters to complete a career grand slam...?

Min Woo Lee broke his finger before The Masters - but is playing anyway

Australian golfer Min Woo Lee will be hoping to record a personal best finish at The Masters over the weekend - but he’ll be battling injury and illness to do so.

The 25-year-old from Perth is set to feature for the third time at Augusta National, having finished T14 in 2022 before missing the cut last year - while a tough run of form has seen him land only a single top-ten finish so far in 2024 and he missed another cut at the Valspar Championship last time out at the end of March.

However, he’s somewhat fortunate to even have the chance to improve on his Masters fortunes and seasonal form - after breaking a finger during a gym session just a couple of weeks out.

“I dropped a dumbbell on my hand,” he explained. “I was in the gym Saturday last week. I was just doing like a side bridge glute thing and it was literally my last rep, last set, and I threw the dumbbell down and somehow clipped my right ring finger. Broke it.”

Bernhard Langer forced to delay Masters farewell until 2025

Golf legend Bernhard Langer has confirmed he now expects to play the Masters for the final time in 2025 after the two-time champion’s original plan for a swansong this week was cruelly dashed after he suffered a torn Achilles in February.

The 66-year-old German picked up the injury playing pickleball and has been forced to miss significant time, sparking a change in plans regarding how he will say goodbye to Augusta National.

“Most likely, but I haven’t announced it yet,” Langer said when asked by Reuters if the 2025 edition would be his final Masters start. “I hope so, but it all depends how the recovery is going.”

The current world No 1 ranked male player ahead of fellow fancied Masters candidate Rory McIlroy - himself bidding to land a career grand slam - Scheffler comes into the tournament at Augusta National in great form, having won the Players Championship in March and since finished T2 at the Texas Children’s Houston Open.

He also won The Masters itself in 2022 and finished in the top 10 last year, with all four of his appearances at Augusta National so far yielding a top-20 finish.

During the Par 3 Contest ahead of the opening day this time around, Scheffler had his sister Sara with him to caddy, reported the Augusta Chronicle . Asked by a reporter during his round what his plans were for if Meredith went into labour, Scheffler’s response was unequivocal.

“I’ll be out of here! I think first child wins over quite a... over many things in my life,” he replied.

Gary Woodland hits hole-in-one on Masters par three day just months after brain surgery

Former US Open champion, Gary Woodland, sank his first career hole-in-one on The Masters par three day mere months after returning to the sport following surgery to remove a brain tumour.

The 39-year-old first showed symptoms of the lesion in the brain back in April 2023 after experiencing tremors and chills. An MRI eventually revealed the tumor but Woodland continued to play golf until his surgery in September.

After the operation he returned to the PGA Tour in January but failed to make the cut at Hawaii’s Sony Open and is hoping for a better outing at Augusta National this week.

“It came out of nowhere,” Woodland revealed back in January. “It was a horrible experience. All you wanted to do was go to sleep to not think about it, and going to sleep was the worst part.

“That is where all the seizures were happening. It was a horrible four, five months. As it got worse, loss of appetite, chills, no energy. It started getting so bad I called my doctor who I’ve been with for 13 years and I was like, man, I need something to calm me down.”

BREAKING: Play to start at 3.30pm BST

Another update from Augusta and it’s better news this time. Play will start at 10.30am local time which is 3.30pm BST and tee times will be shifted accordingly. OOnly a couple of hours until live golf now!

Masters contenders: Cameron Smith

Somewhat of a forgotten star since his move to LIV, Cameron Smith was, at one point, golf’s hottest property having won the Players Championship and Open Championship in the same season.

A quiet character off the course, it’s easy to forget the Australian’s impressive record at Augusta, with four top-ten finishes in the last six years. Having notched up impressive performances, too, at last year’s PGA Championship and US Open, finishing T9 and fourth respectively, it’s clear that there are few courses capable of withstanding the 30-year-old’s aggressive style and flat-stick prowess.

With a T2 finish at the LIV’s most recent event in Hong Kong, Smith may well be peaking at the right time and could slide under the radar of his more outspoken and higher-profile LIV colleagues.

Masters contenders: Joaquin Niemann

Joaquin Niemann was the only golfer keen to lean into the LIV-PGA Tour rivalry before last year’s Masters, suggesting he had a fire under his belly to outperform his PGA Tour rivals “knowing that they hate us”.

An eventual T16 finish didn’t give him much reason to gloat but the Chilean returns to Georgia in the best form of his life, having enjoyed a productive winter on the DP World Tour followed by two wins in LIV’s first four events.

Such displays earned the 25-year-old a late invite to the Masters but, with last year’s finish at Augusta marking his first top-20 in a major, he must now take his game to another level yet again if he is to back up his invite and contend with the game’s best.

Masters contenders: Wyndham Clark

Clark was a 120/1 outsider when he captured US Open glory at Los Angeles Country Club last June but his odds of doubling his major tally at the Masters will be substantially shorter.

Clark won for the first time on the PGA Tour only one month prior to tasting major success last year but, since then, the American’s displays have ensured he won’t be regarded as a flash-in-the-pan major champion.

Capturing his second victory on tour at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am in February this year, the 30-year-old finished runner-up to Scheffler in back-to-back weeks at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and Players Championship. This April will be Clark’s first trip around Augusta in competition but there is no suggestion so far in his flourishing career that such a prospect should faze him.

Masters contenders: Brooks Koepka

Following a tough spell with injuries in 2022, Brooks Koepka looked ready to re-announce himself on the major stage at this tournament last year before falling short after Rahm’s superb Sunday showing.

The American, though, didn’t have to wait long to break his near four-year winless major run, tasting victory at the following month’s PGA Championship at Bay Hill with a commanding two-shot victory.

Where Scheffler revels in his unnerving consistency, Koepka’s day-to-day record is more hot and cold. He has three wins since his move to LIV but has finished inside the top ten just once in their first four events.

But the 33-year-old is the man for the big occasion and there is no greater stage than Augusta. With two second-place finishes at Augusta in his last five starts and quite possibly the greatest major championship player of his generation, he is not someone to be overlooked.

Masters contenders: Ludvig Aberg

Most golf fans are well aware of the statistic which makes Aberg appear an unlikely contender, namely that Fuzzy Zoeller was the last player to win the Masters on their tournament debut back in 1979.

In addition, the Masters will be Aberg’s first appearance in any major, but the 24-year-old Swede has defied the odds since turning professional in June 2023, winning on the DP World Tour and PGA Tour and justifying his wild card by helping Europe regain the Ryder Cup.

Masters contenders: Xander Schauffele

Schauffele insisted the best was yet to come in his career after narrowly missing out on the Players Championship title, the Olympic champion taking a one-shot lead into the final round only to get overhauled by a charging Scheffler.

Failing to get over the line perpetuated the belief in some circles that Schauffele has underachieved, although he has seven PGA Tour titles to go with his gold medal from Tokyo, along with 11 top-10 major finishes, including three in his last five starts at Augusta.

Masters contenders: Rory McIlroy

McIlroy’s 10th attempt to win the Masters and complete a career grand slam comes on the back of some underwhelming form since winning in Dubai in January, although the world No 2 remains second favourite behind Scheffler.

His recent record at Augusta National includes a thrilling final round of 64 in 2022 and two missed cuts and the four-time major winner is reportedly set to skip the pre-tournament par-three contest to fully focus on his bid to make history.

Masters contenders: Jon Rahm

Started last year with a four-putt double bogey on the first but still shot an opening 65 and ended up winning his second major title by four shots over LIV Golf duo Brooks Koepka and Phil Mickelson.

Remarkably returns to Augusta as a fellow member of the Saudi-backed breakaway, a shock move which ensures his competitive sharpness will be under scrutiny.

Will be hoping Koepka and Mickelson proved last year that experience of the course is more important than current form.

Masters contenders: Scottie Scheffler

The 2022 champion has been in brilliant form in 2024, winning the Arnold Palmer Invitational by five shots and seven days later becoming the first player to win back-to-back Players Championship titles at Sawgrass.

Switching putters on the advice of Rory McIlroy has proved vital, although missed short putts did cost him a third straight win in the Houston Open. Rightly rated favourite for a second green jacket at the kind of odds previously only offered for peak-era Tiger Woods.

It’s hard to miss Christo Lamprecht . At six-foot-eight, the giant 23-year-old towers over most of his golfing rivals, an example of super-sized South African megafauna. But tournament by tournament, Lamphrect is developing a reputation to match his massive frame.

Born on the Western Cape, Lamprecht makes his debut in The Masters this week to take another huge stride towards the PGA Tour. One of the world’s leading non-professionals, the youngster secured victory at The Amateur Championship last year at Hillside Golf Club on Merseyside to secure entries into the sport’s three most prestigious majors.

His debut at The Open last summer was impressive, Lamprecht sharing the round one lead before making the cut and finishing as the week’s low amateur to earn the Silver Medal. Soon after, he rose to the top of the amateur rankings — this is a huge man with a huge potential.

The Masters betting tips: 2024 winner predictions, each-way bets and best golf odds

The fractured sport of golf holds a temporary truce this week when the world’s best players come together for the first major of the year.

Jon Rahm returns as the highest profile of the 13 LIV golfers playing at Augusta National, bidding to become the first player to successfully defend his Masters title since Tiger Woods in 2002.

Rahm has yet to win since last year’s four-shot victory over Brooks Koepka and Phil Mickelson, but is priced at around 12/1 to add a third major to his name behind hot favourite Scottie Scheffler and 10/1 shot Rory McIlroy, who is trying to become the sixth player to bag a career grand slam.

Ahead of Thursday’s first tee-off, we’ve taken a long hard look at golf betting sites to pick out three Masters tips from the outright winner market.

BREAKING: Start delayed at Masters

The news we feared. The start at Augusta has been delayed by at least an hour until 9am local time (2pm BST) due to the storms in the area. We’ll keep you updated if we hear more

Rory McIlroy reacts to Tiger Woods backing him to win Masters for career grand slam

Tiger Woods reiterated his belief that Rory McIlroy will definitely win the Masters during his career to complete the grand slam as McIlroy kept his own media duties to a minimum.

McIlroy was the last player to register at Augusta National around 30 minutes before his scheduled press conference, which started early and saw the world No 2 answer just seven questions.

One of those was in response to Woods having earlier insisted it was just a “matter of time” before McIlroy earns a green jacket to join Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus and Woods himself in having won all four major titles.

“It’s flattering,” McIlroy said. “It’s nice to hear, in my opinion, the best player ever to play the game say something like that.

“Does that mean that it’s going to happen? Obviously not. But he’s been around the game long enough to know that I at least have the potential to do it. I know I’ve got the potential to do it too. It’s not as if I haven’t been a pretty good player for the last couple of decades. But, yeah, it’s nice to hear it when it comes out of his mouth.”

Jon Rahm explains why LIV Golf switch will not harm his Masters defence

Jon Rahm insists his competitive edge has not been dulled by his move to LIV Golf as he bids to become just the fourth player to win back-to-back Masters titles.

Rahm’s shock move to the Saudi-backed breakaway competition came after he had previously pledged his loyalty to the PGA Tour and criticised LIV’s 54-hole format, with no cut and a shotgun start as “not a golf tournament”.

The two-time major winner has failed to win any of the five LIV events he has played but travelled to Augusta on the back of finishing fourth in Miami on Sunday and winning the team event at Doral.

“I’ve had a lot of fun playing in those events,” Rahm said. “The competition’s still there. Yeah, they’re smaller fields but you still have to beat some of the best players in the world and you still have to play at the same level you have to play on the PGA Tour to win those events.”

Rahm explains why LIV Golf switch will not harm his Masters defence

Tiger Woods reveals ambition to win ‘one more’ green jacket as he seeks record-breaking cut at The Masters

Tiger Woods insists he can win a sixth green jacket and 16th major title, despite detailing the pain he faces on the vast majority of shots at Augusta National.

Woods has played fewer than five-and-a-half competitive rounds since undergoing ankle surgery in April last year after withdrawing from the Masters during the third round. The 48-year-old returned to action in the Hero World Challenge in December and completed all 72 holes, but was forced to withdraw from the Genesis Invitational in February due to illness after six holes of the second round.

Woods had also suffered a back spasm which led to a dreaded shank on the 18th hole in round one, but stuck to his tried and tested answer when asked what he thought he could achieve this week. “If everything comes together, I think I can get one more,” Woods said, adding with a smile: “Do I need to describe that any more than that, or are we good?”

Yet that question and answer came just minutes after Woods had candidly described the issues that the litany of injuries he has suffered over the years – including almost losing his right leg following a car accident in 2021 – cause him on anything but a perfectly flat lie.

Why does TV coverage of The Masters start so late?

Golf fans hoping to tune in to The Masters will again have to wait for full television coverage to begin as organisers stick with their traditional broadcasting model.

Established in 1934, the first men’s major of the year is held at Augusta in Georgia, with about 90 of the world’s best golfers battling to pull on the famous green jacket.

Sky Sports continues to be the exclusive live broadcast partner of the event in the United Kingdom, but while the first golfers will tee off at about 1pm BST in rounds one and two, it is not until 7.30pm that viewers will be able to watch every group live.

Everything you need to know about the Masters

The best golfers in the world descend on Augusta for The Masters , the first men’s major of the year. Twelve months on from pulling on the famous green jacket, Jon Rahm returns to defend his title with intrigue added by his blockbuster defection to the breakaway LIV Golf series.

Negotiations continue between the PGA Tour and LIV’s Saudi Arabian backers over a possible partnership but for now, all eyes will be on the course as Rahm and his fellow rebels take on those who have remained on Tour. They include 2022 winner Scottie Scheffler, the dominant player in men’s golf this year and the favourite for victory.

Masters Round 1: Leaderboard Updates From Augusta National

The 88th Masters got underway Thursday after a weather delay.

  • Author: John Schwarb

In this story:

AUGUSTA, Ga. — The 88th Masters began Thursday after a two-and-a-half hour weather delay, and Bryson DeChambeau took advantage of a softer Augusta National.

The 2020 U.S. Open winner shot 7-under 65 to take the early clubhouse lead, having gone out in the fifth starting time of Round 1. Scottie Scheffler, the 2022 champion and world No. 1, sits one shot back after a bogey-free 66.

DeChambeau, who infamously said in 2020 that Augusta National was a par-67 for him instead of a par-72 because of how his length was an advantage on the par-5s, indeed birdied three of the four including Nos. 13 and 15. He also birdied both par-3s on the second nine along with a birdie at the par-4 17th to fire 32 coming in. He also birdied the first three holes of his round and had just one bogey, at the par-4 9th.

Historically the Masters has been a perplexing major for the 30-year-old, as DeChambeau has missed the cut the last two years and his best finish is only a T21, when was an amateur in 2016.

DeChambeau plays in the LIV Golf League as the captain of the Crushers GC team and had the logo of his team on his hat and shirt, and his caddie carried a dark green Crushers bag.

Defending Masters champion Jon Rahm plays for LIV Golf (he joined at the end of 2023) and DeChambeau was asked Monday about the state of LIV Golf/PGA Tour unification talks and whether another win by a LIV player would change anything.

“I think the negotiations are going on with or without a win,” DeChambeau said. “I think if a LIV player were to win, including myself, I think we'd all be extremely excited and happy for whoever that individual is."

Danny Willett, the 2016 winner at Augusta, shot 68 to sit three shots behind Scheffler. Ryan Fox shot 69 with a front-nine 31, tying a Masters record.

The Augusta area received more than a half-inch of rain overnight and Round 1 was unable to start as originally scheduled at 8 a.m. But Augusta National’s SubAir system takes moisture out of the turf and allows play relatively quickly, so the field began play at 10:30 a.m. on a slightly less fiery course though the winds picked up as the day went on.
