A great t-shirt is at the core of every traveler’s wardrobe. They work well on their own or as a base layer. Tees are small, light, and can be rolled up and stuffed into your travel backpack . The right travel t-shirt can be hand-washed and hang-dried or worn multiple times.

In this article, you’ll learn what makes a great travel shirt and find a range of men’s and women ‘s tees based on your needs and budget.

What is a “Travel” T-Shirt?

What makes a t-shirt a travel t-shirt? At first glance, you might not see any difference between a basic cotton shirt that costs $10, a fancier brand that costs $30, and a merino wool tee that costs $100.

The main selling point of a travel tee is that you can wear it multiple times between washes. Anti-odor fabric, hydrophobic design, armpit gussets, sweat-wicking technology, and other smart features can all contribute to a great travel t-shirt.

As Outlier co-founder and creative director, Abe Burmeister says:

“The most important things for travel clothing are cleanness, durability, and packability. The longer an item stays clean the more useful it is and the less you need to pack. When you trust your clothes can handle getting pushed to the limits, you can carry less and the less you carry the further you can go.”

You can wear travel t-shirts longer than other shirts, meaning you can pack fewer total shirts. The less you pack, the easier it is to travel in just a carry on .

If you have a shirt that you can wear multiple times without washing (and without smelling terrible), you have a great travel shirt. But re-wearability is just the most important feature of a travel t-shirt, but it’s not the only factor. There are a few other considerations that go into choosing the best shirt for your travels.

What To Look for in a Travel T-Shirt

Cutting and sewing a t-shirt is pretty simple. The magic is in the material and the fit. When you’re shopping for a travel tee, focus on the fabric.

Pick the Right Fabric

Quick-drying, odor controlling, sweat-wicking, comfortable all day.

Merino wool is an outstanding material for travel as it’s comfortable, warm (yet breathable), and looks great. We like to call it “nature’s performance fabric.” Merino t-shirts offer the best overall performance on the market. However, they are also the most expensive and can have durability issues. So they aren’t the only option.

Cotton shirts feel pleasant on your skin but don’t travel well. Cotton wrinkles easily, absorbs sweat, and dries slowly. We like cotton at home but don’t recommend taking it on the road.

A blended fabric can offer high performance at a competitive price. Merino/nylon, cotton/polyester, or tri-blends can offer the positives of each material without all of the negatives.

For example, a strong fiber like nylon can offset the durability concerns of a more delicate fiber like merino wool.

Polyester dries fast and doesn’t wrinkle, which offsets some of the drawbacks of cotton. Cotton feels nicer than polyester, so the blend feels softer and more natural on your skin than 100% polyester.

When you’re traveling, you don’t want to spend your time at a laundromat. Instead, you can hand wash your clothes and hang them to dry in your hotel room or Airbnb. In this situation, you need a t-shirt that doesn’t take forever to dry.

My personal measuring stick for a quick-dry t-shirt is going from wet to damp in 30 minutes and hang drying in a few hours. At the minimum, your t-shirts should always dry completely when hung out overnight. You should be able to wash it and wear it the next day, no matter what.

Quick-dry shirts are also important if you’ll be sweating a lot, whether from hiking, exploring a city, or hauling your personal bag on and off airplanes and buses. Drying quickly will leave you feeling comfortable, not clammy.

Synthetic fabrics and blends are the fastest-drying materials. However, smells can linger on polyester and nylon if you’ve been sweating in your shirt.

Keep yourself smelling fresh, or at least not noticeably stinky, for yourself and for your fellow travelers. There’s nothing worse than being stuck on a flight next to the stinkiest passenger. 

Odor-controlling fabrics are increasingly common, particularly in shirts designed for travel. Don’t be surprised that we’re again suggesting merino wool, which is naturally stink-resistant.

Blended fabrics aren’t as inherently good at odor management. But some have anti-odor treatments, like anti-bacterial coatings or silver threads. For example, Western Rise uses Polygiene on their cotton/polyester blended X Cotton Tee . However, we haven’t found those odor-controlling treatments as effective at staying stink-free as merino.

I’ve already mentioned the importance of shirts that dry fast and tamp down odors. A shirt that wicks sweat will help with both of those issues.

Shirts achieve wicking with fabrics that lift sweat off your body to the exterior of the shirt, where it evaporates more quickly. 

While helpful for any traveler, sweat-wicking t-shirts are essential if you plan on being active during your trip. Whether hiking, cycling, hitting the gym, or simply walking around a hot city, you want to wear fabrics up to the job.

Synthetics are the best at wicking sweat but tend to hold on to smells and need to be washed more frequently. A blend provides a better mix of wicking and odor control.

Merino wool offers the best wicking in a natural fiber. Cotton is notoriously absorbent, making it a poor choice for wicking away sweat.

Alternatively, you can pack a separate gym shirt and accept that you’ll probably have to wash it after each workout.

Because a t-shirt is a core building block of your travel wardrobe , you should feel great whenever you wear it.

You’re going to wear your travel t-shirt a lot. You might even buy a drawer full of the same shirt. You should love wearing it.

Whether you’re buying an expensive merino t-shirt or a dozen of your favorite cheap shirts, you’re making an investment. Buy the one travel t-shirt that you really love and build from there. If you’ve never tried merino before, start with one shirt. Wear it on the plane. Wear it again. And again. Notice that it’s not smelly yet. Then decide how to build out the rest of your wardrobe. Don’t go “all in” with an expensive fabric you’ve never worn before.

If you go for merino wool, buy a shirt of high-quality, fine gauge merino that’s soft, not scratchy.

Blends often have a softer, more natural hand feel than 100% polyester or nylon. You’ll get the upside of a synthetic fabric without feeling like you’re wearing plastic.

If your shirt feels great, you’ll wear it with confidence.

When ordering online, check the shirt’s size chart and compare it to the measurements of your current favorite tee. Everybody is unique, and you probably have your own preferences for how long or short or how slim or loose you like your tees to fit. Check the size chart, read reviews, and size up or down to get a fit you’re comfortable with.

Best Merino Wool Men’s Travel T-Shirt

Best Blended Men’s Travel T-Shirt

Western Rise X Cotton Tee ($54)

A great cotton/polyester blend offers most of the same performance as merino wool at a fraction of the price. And many people prefer the feel of a smooth cotton blend over rougher wool.

Western Rise’s X Cotton T-Shirt is a medium-weight tee with great stretch. The shirt feels like cotton, but thanks to its polyester, dries faster and doesn’t wrinkle as much as you’d expect. The odor-repellant Polygiene coating even means that you can re-wear it between washes.

Best Quick-Dry Men’s Travel T-Shirt

Lululemon Drysense Training Short Sleeve Shirt ($78)

This is our go-to shirt for hitting the gym while traveling. Lululemon’s Drysense tech fabric is quick-drying and sweat-wicking. It also has a little loop on the back of the collar for hanging it from a hook, which helps with drying and ensures that the collar won’t stretch out of shape.

This training tee is also eco-friendly. All of the polyester in the Drysense series is recycled.

Best Budget Men’s Travel T-Shirt

Next Level Apparel Men’s N6210 T-Shirt ($8+)

This basic t-shirt from Amazon is an “excellent for the price” workhorse. The 60% cotton and 40% polyester blend feels good and never needs to be ironed. You can buy a trip’s worth of shirts for the price of one of our other picks. Despite the price, these shirts can last for years without any issues aside from pilling. We recommended the Next Level if you liked the old American Apparel t-shirts from before they sold to Gildan.

Best Merino Wool Women ’s Travel T-Shirt

Woolly V Neck Tee ($50)

Woolly’s V Neck Tee is made of merino wool, so it’s sweat-wicking, odor-resistant, and ultralight. A bit of elastane gives it some extra stretch.

Best Budget Women ‘s Travel T-Shirt

Uniqlo AIRism Scoop Neck Short-Sleeve T-Shirt ($15)

All the shirts in Uniqlo’s AIRism collection pass our test for travel-ready t-shirts. Made from a quick-drying, odor-resistant, and anti-microbial fabric, these tees can withstand the rigor of a full day (or three) out and about. They’re also lightweight and “feel like air,” which is ideal in hot-weather climates or as a barely-there base layer in colder weather.

At $15 each, they also come at a hard-to-beat price point for budget-conscious travelers. Really, the only downsides of these shirts are that they don’t tend to last as long as some of the other t-shirts on this list.

Prioritize breathable fabrics for comfort.

When I’m exploring new places and immersing myself in various activities, I want my clothing to work with me, not against me. I’ve experienced the discomfort of wearing non-breathable fabrics in warm and humid climates, and it’s not something I want to repeat. Breathable fabrics with moisture-wicking blends allow air to circulate, keeping me cool and preventing that sticky, uncomfortable feeling.

Avoid Tight or Short Shirts

As a digital nomad and fashion designer traveling for over five years, the advice is to avoid anything too tight or too short. The 17 Best Men’s Travel Shirts for Style, Comfort, and Adventure

As much as I hate to admit it, the perfect men’s travel shirt doesn’t exist.  You might find comfortable travel shirts that look good – but those same “perfect travel shirts” may be too delicate to adventure hard in, dry too slowly, and get destroyed when you drop it off at a Southeast Asian laundry kiosk. On the other hand, a shirt may dry quickly and withstand a beating but be a little too ugly to be your only shirt. So what’s the solution?

The solution to the “perfect travel shirt” problem is to strategically pick a few shirts for your travels with a dedicated shirt for looking good, a few shirts for adventuring and wandering hard, and an all-purpose shirt that sits somewhere in between – and I think I’ve mastered this compromise.

THE OPTIMAL SHIRT SETUP FOR TRAVEL

If you want your packing list to be ready for anything, pack the following shirts in addition to some travel-ready pants and travel-worthy shoes :

• One shirt for looking good and going out – a versatile button down shirt, ideally short sleeve oxford that is sweat wicking and wrinkle free or a denim shirt
• One shirt that doubles as a warmth layer but can be worn anywhere – I’m a fan of lightweight, technical flannel shirts
• Three or more travel friendly t-shits –a mix of short sleeves, V-necks, and Henleys made of wool, synthetic materials (polyester), or a proven active wear blend to dry quickly and resist funk

If you stick to these three options, you’ll keep your bags light while still being ready for any occasion or adventure.  Read on to discover my favorite options for Men’s travel shirts.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A GREAT TRAVEL SHIRT

Keep in mind that though a shirt might be branded as a great “travel shirt” it still may be over kill (or inadequate) for your travels.  To pick the right travel shirt, that will keep you comfortable, looking good, and smelling good through whatever travels you have in store, think heavily about your destination and consider these points in your potential shirts…

What is the right style for your travels (if any) based on the destination if any?

What materials are best (polyester, wool, or an active wear cotton blend), durability: how hard will your adventures be on these shirts.

• Versatility: What situations will you need to dress for?

Smell and dirt resistance: How often will you be able to shower and do laundry?

If you’re going to Europe, having a nice short sleeve button down is highly recommended.  If you’re going to Southeast Asia, don’t even think about taking any long sleeve shirts.

If you’re doing the Banana Pancake Trail (Thailandà Laosà Vietnamà Cambodia) and the most you’ll do is a pub crawl, ditch the fancy stuff

And if you’re heading to Bali, plan on beachwear and your “nice clothes” being shorts and a nice short sleeve shirt.

In any case, think about the situations you’ll be in and the style required (or not required) to avoid extra clothing.  Here’s a quick cheat list to help

• Southeast Asia: You’ll be in sandals and shorts the entire time.  No long sleeves.
• South America: It may get chilly and adventurous, especially if you’re going to Patagonia, so a long sleeve flannel, an “island-ish” short sleeve button down, and plenty of Merino Wool/Quick Dry t-shirts will do you well.  Also, bring a set of nice clothes – as Buenos Aires, Rio, Cusco, and Medellin have some amazing nightlife
• Europe: You’ll only need one or two “adventurous” pairs of clothes at most (unless you’re trekking).  Dress for the seasons as  winter in Europe is vastly different than summer
• Middle East: Dress conservatively and plan for the deserts to be hot by day and cold by night. You’ll be surprised how far a wool t-shirt and flannel button-down will take you here.
• North America: Dress for the seasons and for specific locations.  We’re all across the board in the US and Canadialand.
• Central America: No long sleeves.  Plan to exist completely in shorts and sandals.

If you can afford it, wool is the most amazing material for shirts .  ( Read about how I decided to wear a wool shirt for a week straight to test the idea).  They resist funk, still keep you warm when wet, and dry quickly.  The only downside is these shirts will breakdown quicker than polyester – especial if you’re using an industrial washer.

Polyester/synthetic shirts are an excellent, cheap option, especially for hard adventuring.  You can purchase them at target for ~$10 or less and they stand up to heavy abuse.  Along the way, they dry quickly and insulate when wet. The downside is they don’t resist funk too well.  Personally, I always hike and travel (by bus, train, and plane) in synthetic shirts because they’re so cheap I don’t care if they get destroyed.  I recommend picking up at least a couple synthetic t-shirts for routine wear in hard conditions.

Cotton: Limit how much of your wardrobe is cotton.  Depending on how often you’re getting wet and how often you wash, cotton can be fine or can be a complete pain.  On the upside, some cotton shirts look good, they’re extremely durable, and they can stand to go a good amount of time between washes in a pinch (denim, not necessarily t-shirts). The only options I consider in cotton are Short sleeve button downs which class up very well, and denim shirts which are super durable, look good, and are a great protect layer for light adventures (like motorbiking in Asia .

The only upside of cotton is that it is much tougher than wool and polyester, with good abrasion resistance and actually gets better with wear.  This is why my denim shirt was my shirt of choice to wear during my motorbike ride through Vietnam , to save a little skin just in case I fell.  All the while, it still looked good enough for the bars.

If you’re in Europe and (should be) showering everyday and have laundry nearby, materials and worrying about getting smelly shouldn’t be too much of an issue.

On the other hand, if you’re moving super quickly through humid Southeast Asia or adventuring through South America and can only wash ever week and a half, do yourself a favor and get shirts made of technical materials (wool, polyester, etc.) that wick sweat, resist odor, and do more to keep you dry.

Now that you know what to look for in a travel shirt, let’s take a closer look at your options

BEST T-SHIRTS FOR TRAVEL

(wool, polyester, and active wear blends).

As unexciting as it sounds, t-shirts are by far the best travel shirt option. They’ve been around for ages, worn in every activity, and performed well while staying stylish every step of the way.  If you take only one type of shirt traveling, stick to t-shirts.

In terms of style, you can’t go wrong with a well fitting t-shirt.

The small packing foot print of t-shirts makes them easy to pack and wash, lightening your load and making life easier.

Some might insist that t-shirts are too boring to wear for a year straight.  I disagree.

To stay looking good (and not get bored), avoid traditional crew neck t-shirts and light V-neck and Henley shirts in dark colors (grey, burgundy, darker blue, black).

For material, invest in at least two wool shirts and grab two cheaper synthetic shirts. 

I have been very satisfied with Wooly’s merino wool t-shirts, Bluffworks’ synthetic travel t shirt, Outlier’s insanely great Ultrafine Merino shirt, and a handful of others I’ve tested and highly recommend below. 

For active wear synthetic shirts, my go to is actually the Hylete Icon-2 performance Henley, designed as gym wear but looks so great I wear it on nights out. For a Target’s G9 Champion brand shirts which are comparable in quality, function, and style to Lulu Lemon’s men’s line and quite a few of Nike’s pieces, but available for ~$10 to $20 for us budget travelers .  

But let’s not get ahead of ourselves…read on for the 17 best travel t-shirts for men, and you’ll definitely find the perfect gear for your upcoming travels.

My Favorite T-Shirts for Travel

1. bluffworks threshold tee.

This amazing t-shirt was obsessively designed specifically for travel. If you’re trying to keep your bags light by getting a shirt that you can wear over and over (without washing) in a variety of conditions, the Bluffworks Threshold T is a perfect candidate.

High breathability, great odor resistance, and a feel softer than cotton make this a great shirt to wear. A unique synthetic blend keeps this shirt super light while drying quickly and making hand washes and line drying possible for “one bag” travelers”

2. THE OUTLIER ULTRAFINE MERINO T SHIRT

This is insanely soft yet comfortable and durable shirt is absolutely the best wool shirt I have ever owned.

Made of 100% extremely fine Merino wool, this shirt naturally resists odor (I’ve worn the shirt for a week straight to test), dries quickly, and does a wonderful job keeping me cool even in tropical climates.

The construction is top notch, very durable and cut with a just slim enough and stylish fit. With 2 or 3 of these shirts, a traveler could easily wander the world with these as their only shirts.

3. THE HYLETE ICON HENLEY

The Hylete Icon 2 Henley is a perfect blend of style and function that fits daily life, adventure, and travel equally. The quad blend performance fabric (that is stretchy, odor resisting, and quick drying) and design are actually intended as hard core exercise that can be worn in everyday life. With the classic Henley stylish three button front, this dresses up nicely with Chinos and a blazer or will simply keep you looking good on long treks.

From the cool highlands of the Himilayas to the warm days and posh night clubs of Bali, this Hylete Henley has been a favorite piece of apparel in my pack and will continue to be. I highly recommend this affordable yet stylish piece of performance gear for your travels

4. WOOLY CLOTHING

Woolly Clothing offers great wool clothing direct to you, which means its cheaper than many other options.  I own a few of their shirts (a V-neck and a Henley) and wholeheartedly vouch for the.  Great style.  Great performance

5. C-9 CHAMPION TEES

Champion C9 is Target’s in house attempt to compete with active wear giants like Nike and Lulelemon for the men’s athletic wear market.  The result is great gym wear that wears beyond the gym for a great price.  I always load up on a few of these shirts for upcoming travels whenever I’m in the US.

6. H&M ACTIVE WEAR V-NECKS

Though these shirts somewhat break my rule of avoiding cotton, the 95% cotton/5% Elastene blend works extremely well.  Not only do these shirts fit well and maintain that fit, they dry much quicker than normal cotton shirts and resist funk pretty well too.  I tested these shirts against high dollar “performance cotton” shirts from other brands (think $60-$80 per shirt) and the H&M slim fit shirts performed much better.

If you’re ever traveling and in a pinch need some shirts anywhere in the world, just drop by an H&M and pick these up.

7. RIDGE MERINO JOURNEY TEE

The Ridge Merino Journey tee is an awesome, travel-ready wool tee-shirt design for durability, hard use, and quick-drying comfort while still fighting funk. This Merino Wool shirt combines 13% nylon into the fabric, making it twice as durable as your average, 100% Merino wool t-shirt. The result is a high performing wool t-shirt that you can abuse for years.

I’ve carried my Ridge Merino Journey tee shirt for just over 2 years of travel and worn it for a week straight without washing, and the anti-microbial nature of the wool keeps me smelling fresh. Hard use of trekking, hand washing, and abrasion from backpacks hasn’t damaged the shirt at all over the two years, proving this is one tough t-shirt

TECHNICAL FLANNEL SHIRTS

A single technical flannel shirt is a priceless addition to the traveler wardrobe.  Wool flannel shirts are great (I have a Pendleton Board Shirt that I love) and there are plenty of other synthetic “technical flannel” shirts combine nylon and polyester to be just as warm, more durable, and are much lighter and easier to pack.

Additionally, the right flannel shirts can add a touch of style if you pick the right one.  My current flannel works in nearly any occasion, and my Uniqlo Oxford Travel shirt works in the rest of those classy sitauations.

MY FAVORITE FLANNEL SHIRTS FOR TRAVEL

8. eddie bauer technical flannel.

A flannel shirt crafted perfectly for travelers.  Lightweight polyester and “FreeDry” technology insulates like a jacket when cold but wicks moisture and breathes to keep you cool and dry in the heat.  The fit on this shirt is more classic, giving you room to move make it great for exploring the outdoors and getting active.  The cuff accent colors offer a great touch too.

I’ve toted this shirt around for the last year, love it, and can’t recommend it enough.

9. THE PENDLETON BOARD SHIRT

The Pendleton Board shirt, originally rocked by surfers in the 60’s is a classic that goes anywhere, and being 100% virgin wool is extremely functional too.  It stays warm through the cold and the rain and still breathes in the heat.  I’ve worn mine around more campfires and in more national parks than I can remember – and with good reason.  Better yet, I can wear it right into the city and no one is the wiser.

10. ICEBREAKER LODGE SHIRT

Icebreaker’s new take on a classic.  100% Merino Wool, this shirt is as technical as it gets, performing in the outdoors (and traveling) while still looking good enough for city life.

TRAVEL READY DRESS SHIRTS

Most commonly labeled “easy care” and targeting business travelers, these shirts are a perfect “dress up” shirt for travelers.  They are usually sweat wicking, breathable, and wrinkle free but have the cut of a nicer button down Oxford.

Best yet, good options can be had for very cheap through Uniqlo and H&M and even better options can be found through Bluffworks that cost a bit more but are well worth the money.

One of my two current “dress up” shirts is actually a Uniqlo easy care oxford that I wore through the cold season of Europe and then came to Asia, chopped of the sleeves and had it sewn for ~$5, and now wear as my island shirt.  But there are plenty of shirts that you won’t have to chop in order to look good.  Read on for my faves.

11 . WESTERN RISE AIRLIGHT BUTTON DOWN

This high tech, travel focused, easy care button down gives you the style of a dress shirt and the durability/easy care you need for travel.

12. UNIQLO EASY CARE DRESS SHIRT

If you’re on a budget and still need to look good during your travels, Uniqlo’s easy care dress shirts are a great option.  The technical materials breathe, wick sweat, and resist wrinkles so you can wear them longer without caring. I wore one of these through Europe and then chopped of the sleeves to make it my casual island shirt…worked like a charm!

13 . BLUFFWORKS MEDIAN TRAVEL SHIRT

A completely “technical” dress shirt, blending 98% polyester and 2% spandex gives the sweat wicking, anti-microbial qualities so you can wear longer, along with wrinkle resisting qualities and freedom of movement so you can stay comfortable along the way.  If you need to “class up” on the road, the Bluffworks Meridian dress shirt is a safe bet.

SHORT SLEEVE OXFORD SHIRTS

Though these commonly break the travel rule of “no cotton”, they actually manage to work very well.

First, the airflow you get from a button prevents you from sweating all over it and getting it completely nasty

Second, most people only wear button down shirts when lounging, so you get away with washing it infrequently.

Third, these shirts are always quite durable and can actually go a little longer without a wash than your common cotton t-shirt. 

Last, these are a classic style staple that can be had for cheap and worn with a bit of versatility.  My go to spot is the Gap – as the shirts always have a classic cut, have a more timeless design (fits just as well in the 1970’s as now and can be worn anywhere in the world), and you can always pay $5 to have the shirt tailored and the fit improved later on.

14. GAP OXFORD SHORT SLEEVE SHIRT

A classic shirt made simply and durably make this another one of my go-to shirts when traveling.  The construction is surprisingly good meaning it will work on hikes and in active situations if you feel like pushing it.  Though this shirt is cotton, it breathes well enough to avoid funk for longer than your active t-shirt.  Beyond the adventures, it looks good enough for most any situation.

MY FAVORITE DENIM SHIRTS FOR TRAVEL

Denim shirts are the unsung hero of travel shirts.  There is a reason that Levis Strauss made his “can’t bust ‘em” gear for goldmining rough necks out of cotton denim – because it works.  Denim shirts are a great all around travel shirt that sits side by side with the technical flannel.

Granted, these denim shirts don’t insulate as well, suck when wet, and take forever to dry, but they look better than flannel and are better if you’re in a situation where you might get thrown around and need an extra layer of skin – like riding a motorbike anywhere in Southeast Asia. Plus, the denim shirt looks good.

A travel tip I got from my buddy “Dr. Strangelove” and his Spanish friends was to actually carry a denim button down on adventures to throw on for nice pics – instead of wearing that sweaty hiking shirt.  That’s actually excellent advice – but I’m a touch too apathetic to execute.

So, if you want a good all-around shirt, that looks good, and you won’t be getting too wet or sweaty, consider the denim shirt.

15. GAP DENIM SHIRTS

Classic cut and fit and constructed well enough to last through your travels.  I have a couple Gap denim shirts that I’ve worn for years and countless countries, and they keep getting better with age.  They’re durable and look good too.

16. THE ORIGINAL: LEVI’S DENIM SHIRT

Levi Strauss did something right with his first couple of creations, cementing “denim” as a style staple.  If you’re going to pick up a denim shirt, you can’t go wrong with the original – Levi’s

HAWAIIAN SHIRTS

Though you wouldn’t expect to see it on this list, if you are venturing to hot or humid climates, Hawaiian shirts are an excellent option.  For one, they’re fun.  People may judge you, but those who don’t will automatically assume you’re fun.

Second, they’re traditional Hawaiian shirts for a reason.  They’re great in the heat and allow just enough breeze while blocking the sun.  They’re also perfect for when you’ve just gotten out of the water.  So, if you’re heading to the islands, consider having some fun and making a Hawaiian shirt your shirt of choice.

Where should you buy these?  Honestly…nowhere in the US.  Buy one on the road as a souvenir.  You can have a custom one made in Southeast Asia for cheap or buy the Balinese version (with real coconut buttons) when you’re in the area.

Ah, travel shirts. Why is this the simplest yet also the most challenging part of packing?

Mott & Bow Slub Crew Tee & Relaxed Slub Tank

I started wearing the Mott & Bow slub tees and tanks this year and packed a few on a trip to the Catskills in Upstate NY . Because they’re pretty thin, and good for spring and summer, you can pack quite a few of these into a packing cube, and they don’t take up a lot of space at all! (I actually really enjoy folding them into little squares).

They’re made of soft pre-washed cotton, and come in basic neutral colors that’ll match everything. I didn’t think I’d gravitate toward Military green, but I did, and it’s my favorite slub tank besides the white one that I find goes with every summer outfit.

As for the fit, the slub tanks are nice and loose, so I wear a cami under them. The tees are much snugger and fit the form a bit more. Both styles are very affordable and can go right into your pack for your next adventure to wear with your travel pants of choice .

This comfortable top from Lululemon , comes in inclusive sizes 0-20 and quickly became one of my favorite travel shirts!

This one is another Pima cotton tee, but the Love Crewneck has added Lycra for stretch. This shirt has a classic fit, so no crazy surprises, and is built for being on the move. It’s a casual fit and not too form-fitting, so it can hide your middle if you’re going for that.

It comes in 16 colors, and I’m really digging the stripes patterns to help stand out in a crowd! The stretch feels awesome when I’m wearing it, and what I like is that for my build, it fits in both the shoulders and the bottom hem without specifically being sized ‘petite.’

What’s more is I could easily dress it up with a skirt, or any of my favorite travel pants that are a step above joggers or leggings, like jeans or even business casual bottoms. This one gets 5 stars from me!

Ibex Women’s Paradox Pocket Short Sleeve Tee

The short-sleeve pocket tee from Ibex can be a cute shirt to wear with jeans, or can be the top you throw on for a mountain biking trip. I’m newer to the Ibex brand, and I enjoy the down-to-earth feel of their products.

This shirt is so soft and lightweight, which pleasantly surprised me when I wore it for the first time! (And if you were familiar with it in the past, it was called the “Merino Tencel Pocket Short Sleeve Tee,” so it’s been renamed the Paradox Tee.)

This travel shirt is totally versatile and has a comfy and relaxed loose fit (not body-hugging). Most body types will look flattered by this shirt. If you find it short, I recommend layering a cami tank underneath for either warmth or modesty. By the way, it’s an all-time bestseller, so don’t delay, if you find your size and chosen color in stock!

Foehn Women’s Keats Merino T-Shirt

I’m newer to the Foehn brand and I like the European feel that all the products have. The Foehn Keats Merino T-shirt is one of the first merino wool tees I’ve owned, and from the start, I saw how easily it went with other clothes I already owned for my trip gear.

Foehn is a company that started from the desire to pair performance with a modern aesthetic. Foehn clothes are technical, and made sustainably with an environmental commitment. The styles are heavy on Euro-style design, so they feel like styles I don’t necessarily shop so often.

The merino wool Keats tee is a timeless go-to shirt for the avid traveler and the merino wool regulates temperature and wicks moisture all in one. I was surprised how nicely it worked out with my Public Rec All Day pants , which you can see in these photos.

Bluffworks Threshold Cowl Neck Top

Much like the rest of the Bluffworks women’s collection of apparel for travel, the new Cowl Neck top is a classy travel top for women who may have dressy or business needs during a trip.

It has a draped and gathered neck line that’ll look perfect under a blazer or cardigan during spring, fall and winter. It’s excellent on its own, too, as a top to wear with a skirt or shorts during summer.

As a note for petite women like me, this one comes in petite sizing! I’m 5’2” and wearing a size Petite XS.

Public Rec Essential Tee

This essential tee is exactly what Public Rec invented it for — the shirt you reach for when you just need the perfect top to go with literally anything in your travel wardrobe! I’ve worn mine with jeans, joggers, patterned bottoms and gym shorts.

I like how fine it feels, and the fit has always been perfect on me from the start. I find it is sized true to size, and it also is a good fit on petite women, even though Public Rec doesn’t carry specific petite sizing. It’s a cropped fit, but it fits me how I like my shirts to fit: hitting right before the hip.

The fabric on this tee is soft Supima cotton with Public Rec’s TransDRY technology that helps it dry fast. It comes in four simple bold colors: white, black, blue and red.

Mott & Bow Crew Marcy tee

Mott & Bow’s original tops were what I first tried as travel shirts. These super lightweight shirts pack up teeny tiny in my bag when I take them on a trip in a packing cube. They’re made of 50% Pima cotton and 50% Modal.

They’re simple basics, which is something I’m always on the hunt for, especially as a quick decision for an outfit when I’m on the road.

The Crew Marcy tee comes in quite a few colors, so it’s kind of hard to decide which to pick; however, there’s a deal: you can load up on a few and save anywhere between 20-27% if you choose a three-pack or six-pack.

Seadon W’s Traveler Merino Tee

I hadn’t heard of Seadon until I tried the W’s Traveler Merino Tee in XS. Finally: a true-to-size XS top that I can wear as a perfect fit travel shirt!

For a little more information about Seadon, the company makes women’s and men’s apparel, as well as accessories like totes, beanies and underwear (which I tried, and really liked!).

What I like about Seadon so far is that they have plastic-free packaging. My Seadon apparel arrived at my house in a biodegradable envelope mailer, and it can even be composted in your compost bin.

Back to the shirt, though, it’s an adaptable merino wool shirt that I commented to Dan is ultra lightweight, soft and stretchy. A few qualities of Seadon’s merino wool fabric are it’s biodegradable fabric, UPF 30+ sun protection, water and wrinkle resistance, back hanging loop and responsibly-sourced material.

I’ll be back to try more Seadon products like the cool Verano Camp Collar Shirt and Daymaker Tank Top .

KUHL Konstance Shirt

From outdoorsy brand KUHL, this best-selling top made from a polyester and Tencel-spandex blend is roomy and tailored with a flattering silhouette. When I wear it, I layer it under a zip-up hoodie or a windbreaker, and I’m be ready for hiking the trails with Dan in no time.

Even as a petite woman, I find that this shirt is only a “little” big in the shoulders, and it doesn’t run too long. Keep in mind that I’m 5’2” and about 110 lbs.!

Overall, I find the fit pretty nice, and still loose, which is good for a travel day. If you typically wear standard sizing, you’ll have no issue in ordering the standard size you wear across other brands.

KUHL made this one with UPF 50+ sun protection for bright days while you’re traveling, and it’s versatile enough for one-shirt wear whether you’re out to lunch or starting a biking journey across a few states.

Quince 100% European Linen Short Sleeve Shirt

Coming from the brand that makes my Quince hard shell suitcase , this lightweight and loose button-down linen shirt is a fan favorite from Quince’s travel collection. As with all Quince tops and blouses, the price is unbeatable and the quality is “affordable luxury,” like everything Quince makes.

This travel shirt is what I’ll put on for a day on the streets of Lisbon , or for a dinner outdoors on the water at a resort or on a boat. It has a boxy fit and a laidback vibe, with the three buttons, wide hem and timeless collar style. The 100% European flax linen makes it heat-regulating and breathable.

This collared button-down shirt is made from flax linen and provides breathability during travel.

Public Rec Go-To Muscle Tank

This performance tank is a pretty athletic-leaning top that I just started wearing for travel. I like the performance fabric that seems pretty novel, especially for stuff that I tend to wear. It’s made of Pima cotton, Lyocell and spandex for a fun stretch.

This travel tee is specifically good for layering, and it kept me cool on a rather hot day in summer when it was really humid. I like the slimming fit and the unique sleeve design.

This tank top comes in four colors right now, with sage and pink as the subtle hues and black and white as classic defaults. I like how the pink goes with my Public Rec joggers that have worked great for trips, too.

Nike Sportswear Club Essentials Women’s T-Shirt

This simple and easy “50/50” T-shirt from Nike is a “pack light” travel shirt to pull out of your bag when it’s flight time, hiking time or time to get in the car. Of all the shirts I mention, it has a very affordable price. Coming from Nike, you know the quality will last. I wear it when I’m home, as well as when I’m away from home.

Regarding the fit, I wear an XS in other Nike products and those have been perfect. I find that in XS, this shirt is a dab wider in the shoulders.

That’s because Nike has updated the fit of this item for an “updated look:” a slightly shorter body, slightly wider shoulders and a slight curve at the bottom keep it up to date with how you want to look while active and traveling.

As a short disclaimer, Nike gave me this product to try, and the opinions above are completely my own.

With an updated relaxed sporty style, this tee is an easy choice for travel days.

Icebreaker Merino Granary Short Sleeve T-Shirt

This oversized merino wool tee has a lounge-style aesthetic with its draped sleeves and loose hem. The relaxed fit will be great for travel days when you want to have a layer on under a big cozy hoodie, or when you kind of want to feel like you’re in pajamas on a flight.

The 100% merino wool fabric helps resist odors, and the shirt is machine washable. It’s just recommended to not put it in the dryer and hang dry instead. I think this shirt does best with women who like loose-fitting relaxed styles. I tried this tee in a size XS, and it ran too big all around. That’s because I’m 5’2” and I do best with petite sizing. Paka Apparel Women’s V-Neck

Maybe you saw newcomer Paka Apparel in regard to the joggers I recommend in the best travel pants for women . If you did, you’ll know that this special company works with artisans in the Peruvian Andes and all the products have a unique “handwoven tag.” This V-neck is coming on all my trips, and it comes in three chilled-out colors: black, beige and “iris,” a rose-lavender hue.

What I like about the Paka V-Neck travel tee is that it is so soft to the touch, and I like the timeless V-neck scoop. With its blend of Pima cotton and Royal Alpaca fibers, it’s durable and flattering.

Despite the fine alpaca fabric blend, it’s machine-washable.

As the last T-shirt in this list, the Jack Wolfskin Pre Light Chill T is an activewear shirt for a sporty traveler. I tried it in size XS, and my suggestion for you when you pick sizing is to size down , as Jack Wolfskin runs big.

Jack Wolfskin is an outdoors and adventure apparel brand that I’ve come to know from products like their jackets, like in my Jack Wolfskin Down Jacket review . Just like the packability of that coat, the Pre Light Chill T packs up tiny in my packing cubes. It’s made from a technical jersey fabric that stretches and moves, with odor protection and functional features like TEXADRI sweat absorption.

This travel shirt packs up small and moves with you.

How I chose these shirts for travel

Over the years, I’ve pretty much figured out what I don’t appreciate in travel apparel and travel shirts. I can’t stand shirts that show perspiration, wrinkle after coming out of my bags, smell after getting sweaty on a bus ride and/or don’t fit in a flattering way. Based on these setbacks, I’ve decided what I do like my travel shirts to do for me.

What I’ve developed in this list is a range of shirts from those that could suit business casual events to the ones you want to wear for your next hike or trek. Some are for both! Here are a few of the things I’ve considered.

The shirts in this list come from my favorite travel brands . Some of these brands I’ve been able to try out first from their travel pants or travel dresses , and some I’ve been recommended by friends or found online. I trust these brands for making quality gear, and I hope you will too.

These shirts come in a range of prices. I’ve absolutely included shirts at every budget, from the really affordable ones in the $30-40 range, to the ones you’ll want to dish out for at the $80+ range. My budget for travel clothes has changed throughout the years, and I expect that the women reading this guide will have varying budgets for travel clothes.

From merino wool to recycled polyester to hemp, there are quite a few looks to consider for travel apparel. The same goes for travel shirts. The sportier shirts are stretchy and are made from quick-dry blends, whereas the merino wool shirts are high-quality and usually sustainably-sourced items with marks of excellence.

Technical features

I always appreciate a travel product with really impressive features. That might be the thoughtful hidden zipper pocket in the Bluffworks Cowl Neck Top, or the asymmetrical or square necklines on some shirts and bodysuits you see in my list.

The shirts in this list range from relaxed tanks to bodysuits to tunics to simple tees. Every woman has several lenses of her style, and the same goes for me. Some days I’ll like a simple crew neck top, and other days I’ll be in the mood for a top like the Public Rec Muscle tank. I am also assuming you’ll be taking a few shirts in your luggage for your trip (but if you have only one shirt for travel, I’ll be truly impressed).

Why trust me?

I’m someone who, despite years of travel, can never decide which shirts to bring on a trip. I think I’m finally in a place where I have my go-to travel shirts (from this list!) and those are the ones that will be my travel staples.

I’ve been traveling independently since my early 20s, from Asia and then to Latin America, and later, from Europe to Africa. I’ve been in all types of weather and elevation levels and I’ve been on tons of different methods of transport. A T-shirt is one of the most fundamental elements of wardrobes the world round, spanning genders, cultures, climates, ages, and shapes. But maddeningly, a good travel T-shirt can be hard to find. Because a good travel T-shirt is more than just what meets the eye.

For starters, a good travel T-shirt should be offered in sizes at least from 0 to 18, and ideally it should be versatile: a fit for a beach day and a business meeting. For me, 5'11" with a long torso, a good travel T-shirt should also hit hip length. It should be suitable for layering. Perhaps most importantly, it should also be engineered with sustainability in mind, from responsible labor to farming practices. Materials—like wool, silk, linen, hemp—should be organic and low impact.

Taken together, these qualities don’t come cheap—they add up. And to be honest, I haven’t always thought this way. But after a pandemic-induced closet purge, I looked around at stacks of T-shirts and realized something: Was it really better to spend $10 on a shirt if I would have to buy another version of that $10 shirt in four months? Was it really better to be purchasing shirts that—while more affordable upfront—were falling apart faster, and I had to wash more often? That were made from synthetic fibers and would sit in a landfill, unable to biodegrade? I decided not.

Since then, I’ve committed to buying better: fewer shirts, yes, but also those of higher quality. It takes more research and money on my end, but I like to think that I’m doing something small for the planet—and staying comfortable in the process.

A logoless tee has power: It can be worn on the plane and to a business meeting. That’s not a stretch if you’ve got a superfine merino wool crew in your arsenal. Thanks to wool’s waxy coating, lanolin, which helps draw moisture away and serve as a sort of natural deterrent against odors, this shirt is a dynamic pick for something light and breathable—and that you can wear multiple times before having to throw it in the wash. After countless washes and stains, the tee has only gotten softer—but somehow has the same shape it did the first day I wore it. And boy, have I worn it: on its own to brunch in New Orleans, under a blazer at a swanky new London cocktail bar, and over a bathing suit to swim at parks in St. Louis. White T-shirts are a wardrobe staple, perfect for every occasion — from throwing one on while you're lounging at home to layering one under a button-up shirt when you're headed into the office. With the perfect balance of softness and structure, this white tee from Madewell stood out in all of our tests. The 100% cotton material has a comfortable, lived-in fee l , and we and our testers appreciated the high-quality construction, with a tester describing the tee as "sturdy" and analysts highlighting the quality stitching and thick collar. One tester said the T-shirt felt a little oversized and wished it were more fitted. It does have a boxier cut and is the shortest T-shirt we tested, but it barely shrunk in the wash and maintained its shape impressively well, so what you see is what you get.

For less than the price of one T-shirt from other brands, you can score two from iconic tee brand Hanes. According to one tester, the Beefy-T is like his "other basic tees but better," and we agree. The T-shirt is thicker than other affordable styles we tested and earned high scores for opacity in the Lab and it felt softer after we washed it according to its care instructions. It has a slightly oversized look but did shrink more than any other tee in our test, so if you prefer a roomier fit, you may want to size up. If you're looking for the perfect tee to layer under a button-up shirt, Mack Weldon has you covered. This super thin and lightweight tee has a slim-fit silhouette, so you won't have to deal with excess bulk and bunching around your arms or waistline. Since it's made with 100% Pima cotton, it has a super smooth and soft feel that our testers and analysts loved. One GH staffer shared, "This is my ideal T-shirt. I'm picky about tees, and this one is the perfect weight." There was some shrinkage in the wash, but the T-shirt still looked and felt good as new.

It also has great stretch and a comfortable feel that one tester described as "lightweight and breathable." We noted in our evaluations that the T-shirt had a slightly oversized fit, and one tester agreed, sharing that he would recommend sizing down if you prefer a more formfitting style or want to wear it as an undershirt.

If you're searching for a white T-shirt that can hold its own, look no further than this pick from Buck Mason. The heavyweight Field-Spec T-shirt stood out in our tests thanks to its elevated look and structured design. The material has a substantial feel that our testers loved, and it was the most opaque fabric in our tests, so you don't need to layer a tank underneath to feel covered. It isn't the softest tee we tested, but it still feels comfortable against the skin and it did get softer after being washed. One happy tester shared, "This shirt felt way more lux and sturdy than other white tees" and another described it as "more stylish" than other T-shirts he's worn.

The lightweight tee is made of 100% Pima cotton for a soft and smooth feel, but it's not overly see-through like some other lightweight styles we tested. One tester who loved the Bombas tee said, "This T-shirt is of noticeably higher quality than most T-shirts I wear," further describing it as "incredibly soft" and "durable." We found the T-shirt to hold up well in the wash without major shrinkage or deep wrinkles, but there was some rippling at the collar, which you should be able to iron or steam out.

We love that it's made of 100% organic cotton with a soft feel that didn't stiffen in the laundry. When we washed it according to its care instructions, the T-shirt looked great without major shrinkage, but it did produce some static and attracted lint and fibers from other tees.

It has a split hemline with small cutouts on each side for a little extra freedom for movement, too. The shirt barely shrunk in the wash and felt soft when we pulled it from the dryer, but it did wrinkle more than other styles. A tester favorite, this white tee from Levi's is as classic as they come. The brand says it has a relaxed fit, but our testers said it felt true-to-size, with one sharing, "I loved the cut and the fit... Levi's knows a classic American man's silhouette." Another tester highlighted the thickness of the material, describing it as "heavy" and sharing that you couldn't see through the shirt when it was on. When we washed the T-shirt according to its care label in the Lab, it held up well without major shrinkage or wrinkling, but the material did stiffen slightly. Testers gave it high ratings for softness overall, though.

What to look for when shopping for a white T-shirt for men

While white T-shirts may seem like a simple style, there are subtle variations between each tee that can impact the overall look, feel and fit. When you're shopping for a new white T-shirt, here are a few things to keep in mind:

✔️ Material: Most white T-shirts are made of knit jersey, a soft and stretchy fabric. They're typically 100% cotton, which is a natural fiber with great breathability and a comfy feel. Others blend cotton with different fibers like polyester or rayon to enhance the overall performance or softness of the fabric. Some tees have a little bit of spandex or elastane for added stretch.

How we test T-shirts for men

In the Good Housekeeping Institute , we test apparel of all kinds, including the best underwear for men , the best work pants for men and the best tees for men . To determine which white T-shirts for men are the best, we scoured the web to find the most popular styles online and reviewed characteristics like style, fiber content and care instructions, and we read real-user reviews. Then we selected 15 styles to test in the Textiles Lab and share with consumer testers. Here's how we evaluated the white T-shirts:

In the Textiles Lab, we assessed the construction and fabrication of each T-shirt (pictured). Next, we placed each of the T-shirts onto a form to determine the fit and to review the style — boxy, oversized, fitted, etc. We also reviewed the neckline, sleeves and hem details and the structure and drape of the material. We placed a black tank on the form, then placed the white tee over it and rated how distinctly we could see the black tank through the T-shirt. The more opaque the material was, the higher the score the shirt received.

To evaluate shrinkage and wear, we first measured each T-shirt from shoulder seam to hem. Then we laundered the tees according to their care instructions and noted any visual changes in appearance including fraying, wrinkling or rippling at the collar or hemline. We then remeasured the T-shirts from shoulder seam to hemline and used our pre- and post-wash measurements to determine the amount of shrinkage.

Along with testing in the Lab, we shared T-shirts with real consumer testers with different body types ranging in sizes from S through XXL who wore and styled the shirts in their daily lives. They provided us with real-user feedback about characteristics like overall fit, appearance, comfort, softness and opacity. Testers also had the opportunity to share how well the tees held up in the wash, highlighted what they specifically liked and disliked about the tees and compared the T-shirts to others they've worn.

• My Relentless Journey to Find the Perfect White Tee

A few months ago, something tragic happened. I was making my quarterly trip to Uniqlo to pick up a few closet staples, and as I wandered into the T-shirt section to pick up my favorite $14.99 white tee , I was shocked to find it had disappeared. Poof! It was gone without a trace. This was not the first time this had happened. Two years ago, the culprit was Banana Republic, which stopped manufacturing its Supima cotton white T-shirts.

The heart of my wardrobe is my white T-shirt drawer. I wear a white T-shirt almost everyday; under my sweaters, with my favorite jeans (you can read about my journey to find them here ) and paired with all my oversize button downs. I like the collar to be high enough that it peeks over my cardigans and long enough to sit right above my hips. Ideally, a white T-shirt must be 100 percent cotton, but I have tried some that are made from hemp-and-linen blends. I find that these wrinkle too easily and the hems distort with washing. What I loved about the Uniqlo shirt was its perfectly boxy fit and sleeves, which weren’t too long but also weren’t cap sleeves. Most importantly, the price was right. I have heard the arguments for white T-shirts that are $70 to $200 (they last longer, the “quality,” the crisp white hue), but I wear white T-shirts too often to be scared about ruining one with stains, spills, or drips. (I do, it should be noted, have my white T-shirt-stain removal down to a science. Once a year or so, I host a pit-stain removal party with my whites and spend the afternoon with a Costco-size bottle of vinegar, baking soda, and hydrogen peroxide; I even made a video about my process .) Ultimately, though, I don’t want to have to be overly precious about my white T-shirt.

I tried to find a replacement by doing most of my shopping research in person, since feel and texture are so key — though I did end up ordering quite a few online. I also narrowed my search by keeping the price under $50. I ended up buying a total of 13 T-shirts, keeping a total of five, and returning the rest before my 30-day return window was up. Some of the shirts I knew right away were returns, just based on the texture and feel. However, I tried all of my no’s and maybe’s on at least five times and in different lighting and times of day to make sure I was certain that they weren’t the ones. I also compared their specs by meticulously studying the inside tag of each T-shirt, looking at where they were made, the brand of cotton, and any washing or drying guidelines. Below, the results.

The Ones I Returned

I found the material of this Cuts tee (it’s made from a blend of polyester, cotton, and spandex) to be extremely soft, but too stretchy. The poly blend, though, means it is wrinkle-resistant (a positive), but overall it felt more like workout material and therefore wasn’t what I was looking for.

The Everlane Organic Cotton Box-Cut Tee comes in a nice bright white and is perhaps the most “classic” fit of the shirts I tried. It is made of 100 percent organic cotton, which means it’s breathable and soft. It also comes with or without a pocket, which is a nice touch. But ultimately it was just too long for what I was looking for.

I hadn’t realized when ordering it that this tee has a raw hem, inside-out detailing, and pre-cuffed short sleeves. Though this shirt was a nice bright white, I don’t think those details make it a great everyday tee for me.

This was my least favorite of the tees I tried. First off, the material is rough and scratchy and would take quite a few washes to soften. The second reason is the fit. The sleeves are too tight and short, and the fit is body-hugging. I struggled to move my arms around in this one. It was also more of a cream than a white.

Made from 100 percent organic cotton, this one was on the thicker end. I tested one of my black bras underneath and there were no transparency issues. But ultimately it was a no, go given that it wasn’t cropped and more cream than white.

I had to give Uniqlo another shot even though I am not completely over its recent transgression. I tried the Uniqlo mini short-sleeve T-shirt but found it to be too fitted for what I wanted. This shirt is made from 96 percent cotton and 4 percent spandex and is very stretchy. The sleeves were cap style and therefore too short on my arms.

​​I really liked the texture of this T-shirt, and it had a great wide-boxy fit; it fell right below my hips. I wasn’t such a fan of its neckline (too wide) so decided to ultimately return this one. Moreover, the sleeves were too tight on me.

For $10, this is truly a great affordable option. It had a good boxy fit and the length was perfect. Not too cropped. But even before I put it on, this shirt was already starting to pill slightly, and that made me concerned about its longevity. Also, the single-needle cover-stitching at the hem made me nervous. I could see the potential for the hem to come undone after a few washes. I ultimately returned this one because of my quality concerns. Note: If you do go with this one, I recommend sizing down.

The Close Calls

The Madewell soft-fade boxy-crop tee was one of the lightest and softest tees I tried. In terms of fit, the length was perfect for me, falling to right below the waistband of my high-rise jeans. It’s made from tissue-light “Softfade Cotton,” and true to Madewell’s description, it does already feel broken in and prewashed. My only nitpicky complaints were that the collar was a little wider than I would have liked and the color more cream than white. I decided to keep this T-shirt because I have been wearing its long-sleeve counterpart all winter long, which has held up incredibly well in the wash and hardly wrinkles.

This COS shirt belongs in its own category; it’s one of the few white T-shirts you could get away with wearing in a corporate setting. This T-shirt is by far the thickest that I tried and is crafted from a premium heavyweight organic cotton jersey. I really appreciate how it wasn’t see-through at all. I’ll definitely be holding on to this one. I plan to throw a cashmere cardigan over my shoulders and wear it to the office. My only caveat is that due to its thickness, it may not be the right choice for an everyday T-shirt to throw on with jeans or shorts. I’ve been wearing it on some warmer days and it is not very breathable.

This shirt ranks No. 1 for texture and feel. It’s made from 100 percent cotton and has a relaxed, easy fit. It is extremely comfortable and only slightly transparent. The sleeves, though, were just a little longer than I was hoping for. I ended up keeping this one because that texture was just so fresh and crisp. I also always like having a longer white T-shirt in my arsenal for styling with chunky knit sweaters.

The Runner-up

I have such a soft spot for supima cotton shirts, which is why the Buck Mason Pima Cotton Crew came in second. This T-shirt really has everything I was looking for: It is meticulously constructed and is by far the softest shirt I tried. It has already become one of my go-to white T-shirts and has maintained its original shape after a few spills and washes. This shirt is perfectly boxy, and I love how roomy the sleeves are and find the length perfect for my high-waisted jeans. At $45, this shirt felt more like an investment, and I don’t think I would be comfortable purchasing more than one. Which is why this shirt ultimately is not the winner. I did end up keeping it, although I have been considerably more precious when wearing it and nervous about spillage. ( BM’s Slub Easy-Crew is actually the Strategist’s Best in Class white tee .)

​​It was an extremely close call, but my winner is ten bucks and from Old Navy. In terms of construction, it is very very similar to some of the more expensive options. This shirt met all of my qualifications: boxy, wide sleeves that weren’t too short, comfortable, 100 percent cotton, and not too cropped. It’s extremely soft and comes in a perfect bright white. I have been wearing this T-shirt with all of my favorite midi skirts and cardigans. It is just the right width to still fit comfortably under a cardigan but not too fitted. My only caveat is that it is semi-sheer, as are most white T-shirts. I’ve solved this issue by primarily wearing this nude bra .

For the last 15 years (with a brief exception for the COVID-19 pandemic), my family and I have celebrated Christmas and New Year’s abroad in Africa or Asia. From Madagascar, Indonesia, and Tanzania to Vietnam, Thailand, and Singapore, I’ve gotten used to spending two weeks during the holidays in warm, muggy climates, swapping coats and boots for sandals and flowy dresses .

This year, my family and I spent two weeks bouncing around India’s southwestern state of Kerala, nicknamed “God’s own country” for the richness of its natural beauty . From misty mountain towns and river-framed cities to urban metropolises and the roaring sandy coast of the Arabian Sea, the a trip filled with constant movement and changing climates, requiring gear, accessories, and clothing that could accommodate everything (think: versatile travel bags , one-and-done outfits , and more). 

And, as someone who is prone to overpacking, I wanted to challenge myself to only bring a carry-on suitcase and a personal item in an effort to travel light — a skill that I have yet to master since becoming a travel writer. These are the 14 travel essentials that topped my packing list, and ensured that my whirlwind ,two-week trip was smooth and effortless – even with just a carry-on. 

R. Vivimos Women’s Long-sleeve Midi Dress

I had three requirements when packing my wardrobe for my trip: stylish, breathable, and modest. These Amazon long-sleeved bohemian-style dresses (thankfully) satisfied them all. As someone just under 5 feet, 1 inches, I was initially worried that the length and oversized style would dwarf my small frame, but I was pleasantly surprised when they only came up to mid-shin. I purchased three styles and colors, and wore them while exploring the city of Kochi and the mountain town of Munnar. 

Despite being long-sleeved, they were breathable and comfortable, and they helped me survive the oppressive Indian heat with optimal sun coverage. The dress comes in 35 different color and print variations that can be worn during the summer, fall, or spring, so it’s a versatile wardrobe staple for any traveler. 

Topbag Family Passport Holder 

I’m a triple citizen of Italy, Ireland, and the United States, and, as an anxious flier, I always travel with all three of my passports, just in case. That’s why I use this family passport holder to safely secure my three passports and other important documents in one easy-to-reach place. 

It can hold up to six passports, which is convenient for families or friends traveling together. The passport holder also comes with a cash pocket and six card slots, which I use to stash away my other forms of identification, bills, loose change, past flight tickets, and my Italian SIM card for when I return home to Rome. But that’s not all: it also has a strap that you can wear around your wrist and a back pocket large enough to fit an iPhone, so you can have all of your major belongings on you in one place (and it doubles as a secure sling bag if you're not a fan of big purses). It helps make the chaos of traveling just a little more organized. 

Prite Corduroy Tote Bag

I collect tote bags, especially for when I travel, so when I received this large, olive-green corduroy one for Christmas, it was a match made in tote heaven. It has a zippered closure that I appreciated for keeping my valuable items from tumbling out. And, for those who love pockets – well, you’re in luck: The tote has a large outside pocket that can close magnetically, two interior slip pockets, and one ample interior zippered pocket which I used to secure my wallet, passports, and keys.

I carried this tote around with me everywhere during my trip, and was able to fit my passports, sunglasses, Kindle Fire, lip balms, earphones, chargers, mints, a 32-ounce HydroJug tumbler, and deodorant, all with plenty of room to spare. The large 18-inch by 15-inch by 4-inch tote is made with durable corduroy and is sturdy enough to carry heavier items like books and laptops, which is what I’ve been using it for since my trip. 

VibiVenezia Women's Timeless Rosso Velvet Slippers

Friulane, or furlane, are popular Venetian velvet slippers that date as far back as the 19th century. They’re a staple in every Italian woman’s closet and add a pop of color and playful elegance to any outfit, which is why I wear mine all the time when I travel. They’re also very comfortable, especially since I had my favorite cobbler in Rome add another layer of rubber to the soles for extra cushioning.

I love the burst of color that they give my outfits, and my orange pair paired especially well with one of the long-sleeved dresses that I purchased for my trip in shades of yellow and orange. I buy most of my friulane from small boutiques when I’m home in Italy, but VibiVenezia is a popular Italian brand that offers the slippers in a literal rainbow of colors and styles. HydroJug 32-ounce Tumbler 

I’m especially horrible at remembering to drink water during long flights, which is likely why I always feel like a wretched, dried husk after traveling. I’ve gotten better at hydrating myself since purchasing a mini, 32-ounce HydroJug tumbler. I usually fill it using water fountains at the airport to ensure that I have enough to keep my body happy while up in the air. This was especially important during my many long flights to India, and even more so upon arriving, as my family and I had to be careful of the drinking water we consumed. 

The hotels we stayed at provided bottles of purified drinking water, which I used to fill up my HydroJug while we were out exploring. This not only ensured that I was staying hydrated in the unforgiving heat, but also that I was consuming safe drinking water. HydroJugs come with the option to purchase a sleeve and strap that can be worn around your person for a hands-free experience, which is especially useful for trips where you’re moving around a lot.

Longbida Women's Cropped Denim Jacket

While the majority of my trip called for a summer wardrobe, there was one occasion that required slightly warmer attire. My family and I spent two days in Munnar, a mountain town nestled between sprawling emerald-green tea plantations and lush forests. The higher altitude was pleasantly chilly, especially at night and in the early morning. Although it was a welcome respite from the heat, I needed to stay warm, and my cropped, faded denim jacket did just the trick.

Although mine can technically be classified as “vintage,” as it was passed down to me from my mother, I found this affordable version at Amazon that comes in 16 different colors and patterns and is easy to pack (or wear on a plane if you're trying to save luggage space).

I spent a week soaking up some much-needed vitamin D rays in the coastal town of Kovalam, and this water-resistant Havaianas mini bag was wrapped around my wrist every day. Made with durable silicone, this small, colorful bag is a staple of mine for any beach outing. I mostly use it to safely store my iPhone from sand and water, but it’s also doubled as a no-frills purse for my wallets, keys, and lip balms. It was gifted to me by my Brazilian friend nearly a decade ago, and it’s accompanied me all over the world, from Greece and Sardinia to Thailand and Indonesia – and it still looks brand new.

Sun Bum Lip Balm SPF 30 3-pack 

As someone who is unfortunately prone to lip blisters after prolonged exposure to the sun, I always have SPF lip balms on deck. Sun Bum’s lip balms have recently become a favorite of mine, not just for their high protection, but also for their tropical flavors that release a burst of summer whenever I twist off their caps. Each gluten-free and vegan lip balm is packed with aloe vera, cocoa butter, and vitamin E, so they roll on super smooth and keep my lips soft and hydrated throughout the day. 

I bought this three-pack ahead of my trip, and almost used them all down to the nub. Part of my excessive use may have been because of how nice they smelled (and tasted), but regardless, I was relieved that my laying in the sun like a lizard didn’t result in any sun blisters. 

Anrabess Women’s Loose Spaghetti Strap Jumpsuit

Jumpsuits are one of my favorite go-to summer outfits for a breathable, comfortable, and stylish look. I have a bordeaux-colored one that I purchased years ago from Urban Outfitters that I wear to near tatters every summer for these reasons. I, of course, brought this jumpsuit on my trip with me and paired it with black lace-up sandals for more formal events such as New Year’s Eve. For most of my trip, however, flip-flops were my standard footwear. 

While the exact jumpsuit I own can’t be found online anymore, there is this affordable Amazon option that has more than 2,000 five-star ratings. Available in 25 colors and patterns with sizes ranging from S to 2XL, it's an especially versatile and traveler-loved staple that I’m looking into trying myself once summer comes around.

These pocket-sized dual USB chargers have been a boon during my travels, and my trip through India was no exception. There were a couple of days when my family and I spent hours traveling between cities, so these portable chargers helped juice up our phones throughout the day. I’ve also used them to power up other devices such as my Kindle Fire and iPad, so it's an especially helpful travel essential to always have on you.

Because of its versatility, I was able to easily share it with members of my family, which significantly cut down the amount of arguments over outlets that we had during our trip. Compact and lightweight, it can easily fit into any carry-on or personal item, which is why it’s always one of the travel essentials I pack first.

Twelve South AirFly Bluetooth Wireless Audio Transmitter

I can never sleep on airplanes, so watching movies is one of the best ways for me to pass the long hours. The earphones they hand out on the airplanes have always bothered my ears, not to mention the subpar audio quality they provide that makes watching anything a frustrating experience. That’s why I was intrigued when I came across this traveler-loved, pocket-sized bluetooth audio transmitter . The Airfly device seamlessly connects your wireless earphones to the airplane’s seatback television (and can also be used to connect to tablets, hotel gym TVs, etc.), which has vastly improved my international flight experience. 

The many flights and hours it took to reach India literally flew by (pun intended) because of this small but mighty device. I currently have the device that can only connect one pair of headphones, but I’m looking into purchasing the dual AirFly version for when I travel with my partner.

This Mini Weekender has quickly become my favorite carry-on for international trips since I received it for Christmas. Ray-Ban Classic Aviator Sunglasses

The Ray-Ban classic aviators have been my go-to pair of sunglasses since I was 13, so it should come as no surprise that they came to India with me. They’re lightweight, easy to pack, and stylish — and, not to mention, great at shielding my eyes from the harsh sunlight. I have the gold-tinted shades that I chose to match my coloring and the gold jewelry that I always wear (us Italians really do love our gold).

Based on my experience, Ray-Ban sunglasses are worth the investment. I’ve had my pair for the last 13 years, and aside from a few small nicks, they still look brand new.
