Looking for Adventure?

Dogsledding: a northern tradition, dogsledding is the quintessential northern experience..

Dogsledding is the quintessential northern experience. Developed as a method of winter travel developed by northern Indigenous peoples, the practice of using dogs to pull sleds dates back to at least 6000 BC. Remnants of dog sleds and harnesses have been found with dog remains in Siberia which carbon-dated to 7800–8000 years ago. The advent of airplanes and modern snowmobiles have left dogsledding as more of a sport for enjoyment rather than essential transportation. These days, there are a number of famous dog sledding races to aspire to, particularly the Yukon Quest and famous Alaskan Iditarod.

While you're in Revelstoke, take advantage of the opportunity to try out this time honoured tradition. There's nothing quite like the thrill of being pulled by a team of enthusiastic dogs.

Revelstoke Dog Sled Adventures

Revelstoke Dog Sled Adventure s offers sled experiences with a team of well trained and beloved Alaskan Racing Huskies. The small, family run business treats its dogs with care and respect. In your dog sledding experience, you’ll learn about what it takes to run a dog sled and how the huskies work together as a team.

Dog sledding is appropriate for children three and up, and the guides will tailor your adventure to ensure that you are comfortable, while allowing for a bit of an adrenaline rush if that’s what you’re looking for.

Revelstoke Dog Sled Adventures

You could not have wiped the cheezy grin off my face the whole time -- I was in heaven. Over hills, around corners, fast and slow, the experienced, happy, hard-working dogs love to run and it shows. On the way back you could see the dogs were in a groove and super relaxed, enjoying the run.

Dogsledding: a winter getaway

Musher eric marsden of revelstoke dogsled adventures is passionate about his sport, his animals and his guests' experiences.

Every Canadian’s bucket list should include dog sledding, said Eric Marsden. He’s the owner/operator of Revelstoke Dogsled Adventures , a business that has been introducing visitors to his love of his dogs and his hobby-turned-career for the past six years. The activity is a part of our heritage, he pointed out, in addition to being a lot of fun.

“Guests can expect an interactive, fun, safe experience,” he said of Revelstoke Dogsled Adventures. “I'm not just treating people as cargo; they're there working with me every step of the way in helping feed, harness, hook up the dogs and run 'em. Typically by the end of my tours, I'm just sitting in the sled and I'm being the tourist. With competent guests, they're generally finishing the ride home for me. . . .  It's not so much a guided tour as it is mushing 101. Everyone gets to learn a lot more.”

Just keep sledding

Clients of Revelstoke Dogsled Adventures are often pleasantly surprised by the amount of interaction they have with the dogs, said Eric. He refers to his sled teams as elite canine athletes, fur babies and the best employees a guy could ask for. Keeping a smaller kennel of 27 dogs (larger operations have hundreds of dogs) also allows the Marsdens to extend plenty of affection to the animals and to get them out running frequently. Sled dogs have a drive and eagerness to run the trails, a job they’re made for.

There are only a few dogsled businesses in the Kootenays. It’s not surprising, given the cost and time commitment of owning a dog team in the first place and a lack of interest from the younger generation. Eric believes he is a curator as well as a guide, helping to preserve a dying art in the region.

In addition to its standard tours, Revelstoke Dogsled Adventures will book custom tours. Shortened tours can serve all ages, and Eric and his dogs enjoy leading longer adventure trips, too.

“We've had people book custom tours to, say, propose to their wife or we've done tours out to the hotsprings or whatnot,” said Eric. “Recently, we're getting interested in leading clients to heli-ski lodges—we're looking to work with some heli-ski companies to actually bring some people to the lodges by dogsled. We've also got a bit of a zany idea going. We've fashioned ourselves as the world's first dog ski operation. So as opposed to cat skiing or heli skiing, we've dabbled with bringing people up via dogsled to get their elevation gain. It started out as a training exercise because I was hill running my dogs but, hey, we've got room for one more person, might as well go down the mountain that way. It turned out to be super fun for us.”

Choosing a dog-sledding experience

With a growing business that aligns with their hobby and their passion for their animals, the Marsdens look forward to introducing more visitors to dog sledding in the winters to come.

“I love my job,” said Eric. “I love Revelstoke. The Kootenays are a great place to do business. I've had lots of support from the Revelstoke community and am super stoked for another season here.”

We are going dog sledding with Revelstoke Dogsled Adventures next week. Before we embark on our mushing experience we wanted to introduce you to our hosts and their team of dogs – the powderhounds.

Today, eric marsden, shares with us his experience and knowledge of the dog sledding industry, the community of revelstoke and all that is involved with operating a dog sledding team..

Dog sledding has been a big part of our history here in Canada. Long ago… the Inuit of the Arctic of Canada used dog sledding for completing daily chores and for accessing fishing holes, hunting grounds, conducting trade and for moving to winter villages.

As the Arctic communities and outposts began to flourish in the early 1900s the dog sled was used for delivering mail and medical supplies. Even the RCMP (Royal Canadian Mounted Police) patrolled the northern wilderness by dog sled during this period.

In this interview Eric Marsden of Revelstoke Dogsled Adventures provides us with some insight about his love for his dogs, his love for the sport and his love for the outdoors.

“The “Friends of Tourism” program is an interview initiative conducted by eh Canada Travel & Adventure which introduces you, the reader, to some of the talented people of travel we have had the pleasure of meeting with including our advertisers, non profits, artists, photographers, equipment companies, sponsors and travel bloggers.

So lets learn more about dog sledding courtesy of Revelstoke Dogsled Adventures shall we.

( eh Canada Travel) Thank you for your time Eric. Shall we get to it with our first question.

1. Who are you, what do you do and where are you from?

(Revelstoke Dogsled Adventures) Eric Marsden, owner\operator of Revelstoke Dogsled Adventures. I am originally from Mile 101 on the Alaska Highway in British Columbia, Canada. While training my race team I lead dogsled adventure trips here in the Revelstoke, BC area to help subsidize my hobby and passion for dog sledding.

(ehCanadaTravel.com) We are excited to learn more about dog sledding and excited to meet your dog team.

2. Favorite thing about Revelstoke, British Columbia?

(Revelstoke Dogsled Adventures) Too many favorite things about Revy (Revelstoke). Here are a few… love the 4 distinct seasons, the small town atmosphere where going out for a pint of milk can take longer than u think and BC’s most reliable snowpack and awe-inspiring views regardless of what direction you face.

(ehCanadaTravel.com) We just moved to Revy for work… but we can quickly see why you love it here. Agree with you on the scenery and year round adventures. Just wow.

3. Tell us something unique about Revelstoke Dogsled Adventures ?

(Revelstoke Dogsled Adventures) Our modest sized kennel places an emphasis on our dogs, half our dogs are born under our bed and it shows….our pet dogs even have jobs! The wife and I, along with our teams, are able to show our guests a distinctly hands on mushing 101 experience that would be unfeasible in larger operations.

(ehCanadaTravel.com) Smaller kennel, more personal interaction, love for the dogs, more of a family atmosphere. We get it. Makes sense.

4. What are your biggest challenges with your dogs ?

Keno - Powderhound

Keno – Powderhound

(Revelstoke Dogsled Adventures) Challenges are many in this sport…animal husbandry is a year round occupation that demands your full attention every day…no exceptions! Revelstoke offers its own distinct challenges here…..copious amounts of snow, hilly terrain, the occasional warm weather blast from the coast as well as watching out for pesky slednecks on the trails. To be honest working with the dogs is the easiest part of being a dog musher, it’s all the side activities and chores that go along with it that provide the meat and potatoes of my workload…. the wife and I slave away in the Canadian bush every summer to make our dream a reality and treat the fall and winter months as precious. May will be here sooner than I would like and I know I will have to park the dog sleds for another season.

(ehCanadaTravel.com) We have heard from other mushers that animal husbandry is a full-time job with exercise, training, feeding and some good ol’ fashion loving. We were, however, not aware you were clearing your own trails on top of that. Wow, Eric, you wear many hats. Let us be one to thank you for your efforts and your time.

5. #1 Reason you work in the travel industry in Canada?

(Revelstoke Dogsled Adventures) Canada is an easy sell to anyone visiting from abroad, we’re blessed with a country that defies all superlatives. Sharing my love of BC to guests is natural and instinctive, I don’t need to polish anything up, it’s all there for everyone to see. Having travelled to over 30 countries I can honestly say there is nowhere I would rather be. I love sharing my enthusiasm and love for our landscape with guests from both abroad and from other parts of Canada. Working in the travel industry here allows me to constantly reinforce my love for our land and keeps me where I want to be … outside in it.

(ehCanadaTravel.com) Good answer. What can we say but good answer.

6. What is your funniest dog sledding moment?

Dogs of Revelstoke - Pepper

Dogs of Revelstoke – Pepper

(Revelstoke Dogsled Adventures) Where to start…. I have had my share of funny expereinces….over the years we have had lots of goofball dogs that never fail to make me laugh and smile. Just last week I watched one of my dogs eat my wife’s lunch while out on the trail…my wife didn’t think it was that funny. Then there is the sight of watching 12 sled dogs go bonkers chasing a squirrel that stays one step ahead them constantly? I never tire of watching one of my big ol dumb dogs, Oreo, pee on my handlers leg whenever their back is turned. I’ve got another dog named Chevy who chases imaginary horseflies in the middle of winter! Comic relief is always around the corner. These guys make me laugh every day, every dog has his or her own character and once one learns this the time with the dogs is a lot funnier .

(ehCanadaTravel.com) Cannot wait to meet the dogs and their personalities. Maybe have to keep a close watch on Oreo during our introduction bonding session.

7. What do you love about the winter season in Revelstoke and why ?

(Revelstoke Dogsled Adventures) Would it be too obvious if I stated that being a dogsledder I love winter? How about copious amounts of snow! It is a curse at the same time. I call my dogs the powderhounds but truth be known I can’t sled every time we get a big dump because there is lots of trail grooming to be done here after a big snow. But on the flip side I am a bit of a ski bum myself and indulge on our world-class local ski hill, quite often you can find myself up there in the afternoon once chores and runs are done.

(ehCanadaTravel.com) We can relate with you about all the passions for winter. We too love the snow. Love the sights and adventures that come with the snow.

8. What should travelers look for when booking a dog sledding adventure ?

(Revelstoke Dogsled Adventures) Having worked for a variety of kennels and companies in the past I would encourage would-be mushers to seek out smaller companies that have closer ties to their dogs. You will find a better, more authentic experience when going out with a ‘ma and pa’ operation as oppose to a larger Walmart style company with 200 dogs. There are lots of excellent outfits out there that can and will cater to what ever your wants and desires are, all the way from shorter excursions to week-long trips. Travelling with ‘ma and pa’ will guarantee a more educational and rewarding trip, do your research and figure out what you want out of your experience.

(ehCanadaTravel.com) Good advice. Research is always a good idea.

9. Where would you like to travel in Canada for your next vacation and why ?

(Revelstoke Dogsled Adventures) This might sound sadistic to some but this year I’m going to chase winter in the Yukon Territories and Northern BC. Late April is kinda of a sad time of year for me and the dogs as the season comes to a close so I’m hoping I can squeeze a bit more outa old man winter by chasing him up north. Fellow mushers have told me it’s a good snow year up there so I am looking forward to running new trails with new views. Every trip I do provides me with new learning experiences and I have always loved the north. I’m a bit of an “isolated island of mushing” here in Revelstoke and love meeting and running with other mushers…gotta keep learning.

(ehCanadaTravel.com) The Yukon and NWT are wonderful places! We too enjoyed our adventures there. And the Northern Lights. Wow. Would like to spend winter up north as well. On the list! Just need the right invite and reason.

10. Please give us some insight on what, you see, as the biggest mistake travelers do ?

(Revelstoke Dogsled Adventures) I’m guilty of it too….. so many times we travel abroad and don’t allow ourselves to be truly swept up in the experience…our eyes are not truly open to new experiences and often guard ourselves against it. Here in Revy I often see this… travellers from abroad isolating themselves from any local experience…insolating themselves from locals by being their own island abroad. My suggestion is to open yourself up to people. Canadians are a friendly approachable bunch and the most rewarding experiences often stem from random conversations and interactions with people who inhabit the country. I’m constantly amazed at the number of people who travel here for two weeks and the only Canadians they have interacted with are the front desk lady at their hotel and the bartender. Go ahead, meet as many people as you can …these are the memories we end up taking home.

(ehCanadaTravel.com) To fully appreciate Canada one must meet some of the quality and unique people of the country. Agreed!

Thank you Eric for your time and for providing us some great insight into dog sledding.

Find just about everything you need during your visit in inviting downtown Revelstoke. Liam Harrap / Revelstoke Review

Bring only the essentials

In Revelstoke, there’s an extensive list of “things-to-do” but a shorter list of “things-to-bring.” The former can be long, but the latter doesn’t have to be.

Ensuring you’re primed to venture anywhere at anytime, the following items will do the trick just fine!

Whether you’re hitting a night out on the town, shredding the pow or taking a stab at cross country skiing, a good set of long johns is often all you need to retain warmth. Paired with a light jacket, a vest, a beanie and gloves, you’re all set! And don’t forget your flask filled with… tea.

Other essentials for ease of mind:

  • Spare clothing, (socks, gloves, underwear)
  • Hand warmers
  • Water/protein bar(s)
  • Phone charger/battery pack
  • Most importantly, a positive attitude

When it comes to day-to-day fit checks, the town’s style is casual, fun, non-judgemental and practical. You’ll fit right in with a toque, plaid shirt and a pair of boots. As long as it makes you confident and comfortable, you know you’ve made the right choice!

If you forget anything along the way, a trip to Revy’s downtown will sort you out just fine. Don’t forget to drop by the Visitor Information Centre for your Revelstoke swag.

Dogsledding in Revelstoke is a wild ride

Ross Goddard and the guides at Revelstoke Dogsled Adventures show patience and care for the canines in their yard. (Katie Marti/Vacay.ca)

REVELSTOKE, BRITISH COLUMBIA — I’ve been in Revelstoke for almost a month and most of my free time has been spent attached to a couple of planks, either skinning up the side of a mountain or carving turns on my way back down. It’s a skier’s (or snowboarder’s) paradise here in the Selkirk and Monashee ranges of British Columbia and I’m loving every minute of it. Yet, while the town’s shiny new Revelstoke Mountain Resort and nearby backcountry touring mecca, Rogers Pass, certainly live up to their dazzling reputations, taking a day off to explore some of the region’s other attractions is sure to delight even the most extreme adventure seekers.

Today, I’m giving the skis a rest and have opted for something a little less mainstream and a little more traditional. I’m going to race across a snowy Canadian landscape on the back of a sled. Not a motorized sled, by any means, and certainly not a toboggan: The sled I’m talking about runs on canine power, and lots of it.

Eric Marsden of Revelstoke Dogsled Adventures  owns a small-scale operation in town and a mutual friend has put us in touch for an afternoon of mushing in the beautiful Columbia River valley. Fortunately, I know my way around a dog sled thanks to a couple of winters spent leading trips in northern Ontario with Outward Bound Canada. However, it’s been awhile and although I’m definitely excited to get back out there, I have to admit there are more than a few butterflies bumping wings in my stomach as I pull into the dog yard and prepare to meet my team for the day.

Thankfully, one of Eric’s guides, Ross Goddard, is there to lead the way. He’s worked in a few different yards across Canada and clearly loves what he does.

“I’d rather hang out with these dogs than most people,” he says with a warm smile as he examines the paw of one our would-be runners, a blue-eyed Alaskan Husky named Jasper.

I listen as Ross and Eric discuss which dogs we should run. They take into account things like personality traits, who’s in heat and who’s been running too much or not enough on recent trips. It’s as if they’re talking about personal friends, actual human ones, which, I suppose they may as well be. Once the roster has been set, Ross turns his attention to our sled and organizes eight dogs into their positions on the line while I assist with my rusty skills. Soon enough, we’re loaded up. After spending some time in the yard getting to know the dogs and seeing firsthand the effort Eric and his guides put into making sure that every trip will run smoothly for guests and dogs alike, I feel relaxed and confident as I settle into my padded little seat in the sled and prepare for take-off.

Letting the Dogs Out in British Columbia

Ross has barely unlashed the sled from its anchor and hollered “Let’s go!” when we are bouncing behind a force of nature that must be felt and seen and heard to be fully appreciated. I hear myself whoop as we fly across the snow in a frenzy. The jolt of a team of sled dogs finally allowed to run after having been harnessed and held in one spot for what must feel like an eternity is unlike any feeling you’ve experienced.

By clever design, the trail leads uphill almost immediately after the start, which serves to slow the team of hyper huskies until, in no time at all, we’ve eased into a gentle glide set to a soundtrack of panting dogs and the whoosh of snow passing beneath our sled. We’re able to chat as we go and soon enough we’re stopping to give the team a break and take photos of the postcard scenery that has opened up all around us.

As we near the halfway point, Ross asks if I’m ready to take the proverbial reins. I have a quick conference with myself to determine whether I’m up to the task and, apparently, decide to go for it because, before I even know it, I’m standing on the runners, preparing to release the hounds.

Let’s go!

In an instant, we’re off and running and it all comes flooding back to me; the balancing of the sled, the deep voice that lets the team know you’re the alpha dog in control.

By the time we arrive back at our starting point, Eric and his partner Connie are there, greeting us with coffee and hot chocolate, a welcome treat at the end of our snowy adventure. For the dogs, Eric’s brought along a bucket full of meat and broth as a reward for their hard work out on the trail.

Dogsledding and Animal Care in the Mountains

“Traditionally, that’s why they run, right? To hunt, to get food,” he explains as he walks around patting each furry head and spreading his appreciation equally amongst his dogs. “They’ve still got some wolf in them, obviously, so it’s important to understand that and to maintain a connection between what we’re doing out here and their true nature as sled dogs.”

Once again, I’m struck with admiration for the compassion Eric and his crew have for these animals. It’s more than just a business to them and, I realize, more than just an adventure for those of us fortunate enough to spend time on trail with one of his teams. It’s an experience.

As I drive away, I catch a glimpse of the yard through my rear-view mirror. I may not sacrifice a plus-10-centimetre powder day to ride the flats in the river valley, but I certainly won’t go the rest of the season without spending a few more afternoons on the back of a dog sled, snow stinging my cheeks and wind against my teeth as I grin from ear to ear.

Revelstoke Dogsled Adventures

A bit about us.

Revelstoke Dogsled Adventures has proudly been operating in the Revelstoke area since 2009. We are a small family run kennel who strive to maintain the highest standards of dog care and guest satisfaction.

When we are not sharing our love for the sport with guests leading tours, we are often training our dogs to compete in internationally recognized dogsled races where we have proven to be quite successful at many levels of competition.

With the help of our 2 lovely daughters and staff we are able to allow our dogs to reach their full potential, both as elite canine athletes and as socialized couch potatoes.

Working forestry in the summer allows us to run and train dogs 8 months a year full time. Our life has gone to the dogs and we would not have it any other way.

Preserving the lifestyle of dog mushing has allowed our family a special connection to our collective history and cant wait to share it with you.

Gift An Adventure

Our tours are the perfect gift for the people you love . Send them on an adventure with us to see the magical landscapes surrounding Revelstoke.

Our modest-size kennel makes sure every dog receives the love and attention they deserve.

Our trained, motivated teams of Alaskan Racing Huskies will whisk you through the snowy trails. Over hills, around corners, fast and slow, our experienced, happy, hard-working dogs love to run and it shows. Each pup has unique attributes from appearance to demeanour but when running on a tow line the team becomes a unified force.

At Revelstoke Dogsled Adventures, we love our dogs and want to keep them happy and running strong. As we say, dogs are the best business partners out there.

Our dogs’ health and well-being is our primary concern and tour schedules may vary for reasons such as unfavourable weather conditions.

WHAT PEOPLE SAY ABOUT US

Had a great time with GCT! Heather did a great job at the counter getting us any gear we needed throughout our week, and Steve did a great job on our one day tour. Our group had a variety of skill levels and he found terrain that kept everybody challenged. Most of Boulder and Frisbee common areas were pretty tracked out but he found us plenty of untouched areas. I would definitely recommend it to anyone heading to Revelstoke. He will give you some great pointers, regardless of your skill level. Our only regret is that we didn’t do it earlier in the week. I would recommend a guided day trip on your second day.

We booked a guide for 3 days, our group was a mixed bag of guys that have rode the mountains a fair bit and couple including myself with very little mountain riding experience and limited amount of seat time in recent years. We had Oli as our guide and he was amazing. Listened to our likes and dislikes and found us amazing areas to ride for all of our group members. Couldn’t be happier with the experience and would recommend them to anyone who doesn’t have much experience or knowledge of the area. Thank you

James Dawson

Matt is an amazing guide, would recommend anyone who does a tour asks for Matt. First day he warmed us up to the skills behind mountain sledding. As well he took us to some very breath taking views. Not to mention our lunch spot, which was in a Cave. Second day he took us to do some tree riding in some nice valleys. On the third day went to some higher spots, even got to get to a summit. During our whole time Matt was getting cool videos and pictures of me and my dad. Overall the best vacation I have ever said, snow condition were incredible, a true paradise for any sledder.
