Singapore River Cruise

Singapore River Cruise

A Singapore River Cruise is a breathtaking way to see the sights aboard a comfortable bumboat as you cruise along the famous heritage river and Marina Bay.

Because it’s one of the most enjoyable activities in the city, it’s no surprise that the cruise is not only popular among tourists but also locals.

Singapore River Cruise, Ticket Price, Route Map & Schedule, Clarke Quay

The bumboats used were once the primary transportation method for transporting cargo during the early days of Singapore . With the river cruises , you can now experience what it’s like to ride on these historic boats, which originated from Europe in the 1600s.

Some of the highlights you’ll see aboard the cruise include the Raffles Landing Site, Merlion, Singapore Flyer , Boat Quay, Marina Bay, and Clarke Quay. Day and night boat tours are available.

Daytime tours are ideal if you’d like to unwind with the breeze in your hair. On the other hand, night tours are romantic and rejuvenating; a great choice especially if Singapore weather is extremely hot during the day. Both options provide you with live commentary.

If you’re in Singapore during the Spectra at Marina Bay Sands at night, choosing a river cruise around this time is highly recommended. The Singapore River Cruise costs $25 for adults and $15 for children. Tours depart at 9am through 11pm daily, with the last boat leaving at 10:30pm.

From there onward, the journey remains uninterrupted and smooth. Having traveled along the river across a plethora of attractions, the cruise makes its way back to the Quay.

Cruise Pass Underneath Fantastic Bridges

As the cruise travels along the Singapore River, it passes underneath some of the city’s most beautiful and elaborately structured bridges. The helix bridge, with its complex helix shape, is an architectural marvel. The Read Bridge is another popular attraction that is closely tied to the city’s history.

On-River Sightseeing On Singapore River Cruise

Designed as a sightseeing tour, the River Cruise travels across some of Singapore’s best historical and cultural attractions. The Raffles Landing Spot, Merlion Park, Marina Bay and the Esplanade are some of the most visually striking landmarks that the cruise crosses along the way.

Attractions to See While on Singapore River Cruise

Taking a river cruise is not merely a luxury experience, but offers a great method of sightseeing around the city without having to deal with its dense traffic. Meandering through the city’s heart, the Singapore River Cruise offers fantastic views of some of its biggest attractions. The river cruise takes one across some of Singapore’s best historical attractions, including the Raffles Landing Site and the Merlion. One also passes by the striking attractions of the Marina Bay, along with a few fantastic bridges like the Read Bridge and the Helix Bridge. Here are the sights covered on your Singapore River Cruise :

Marina Bay Sands Singapore

Located on the Marina Bay waterfront, the Marina Bay Sands is one of Singapore's most luxurious hotels. While the 3 cascading hotel towers promise an opulent stay, the Marina Bay Sands complex is also brimming with some of the city’s most liveliest entertainment attractions. For example, the ArtScience Museum displays the collaborative efforts of Singapore’s best artists and scientists. The Digital Light Canvas is another artistic marvel where you can walk across a digital canvas and paint with your feet. The SkyPark Observation Deck at Marina Bay Sands is known for its brilliant views of the Bay, and the Spectra is the hotel’s very own light and sound show.

Raffles Landing Site

One of the most poignant historical points that one crosses on their Singapore River Cruise, the Raffles Landing Site marks the beginning of Singapore city as we know it today. The site marks the exact spot where Sir Stamford Raffles disembarked on the day of 29 January, 1819. An agent of the East India Company, Sir Raffles arrived in Singapore with the hopes of making its ports as competitive as those in Europe, and changed the face of the city forever. Today, the disembarking spot has been immortalized with a marble statue of the man himself.

The Merlion Singapore

Half head, half fish, the Merlion statue has now become synonymous with the city of Singapore. The Merlion is a lion with a fish body resting on a wave crest. The lion head represents the legend of Singapore's rediscovery, as documented in the "Malay Annals," while the fish tail is symbolic of the city's history as a fishing village. Mr Lim Nang Seng, a late Singapore artisan, constructed the Merlion statue, which stands 8.6 meters tall and weighs 70 tonnes. Cement fondue is used for the body, porcelain plates for the skin, and miniature red teacups for the eyes.

Esplanade

The Esplanade, or Theater's on the Bay stands right by the beach on Marina sands. It is Singapore's foremost cultural entertainment and performing arts center, and was built to accommodate a full-scale musical production. The Esplanade was originally known as The Papayas. However, due to the conspicuous spiky sunshade curtain gracing the two glass domes of the complex, it was later nicknamed the Durian and is still locally called that. Visitors can catch a number of live performances, theaters and concerts at the Esplanade, each one celebrating the Singaporean arts better than the next.

Read Bridge

The Read Bridge, located in the center of Clark Quay, is perhaps the most popular bridge among locals in the city. This was named after William Henry Macleod Read, a famous Singapore citizen and Consul to the Netherlands in the 1800s, and was completed in 1889. Locals call this iconic structure Malacca Bridge, Green Bridge, and, more often, The Bridge. People used to meet here to hear Teochew raconteurs tell stories. Even today, the Read Bridge remains lined up with the younger crowds in Singapore, and is known as a popular - and scenic- hangout spot.

Helix Bridge

Renowned for its complex, double-helixed architecture, the Helix Bridge is one of the most striking structures that one comes across on their Singapore River Cruise. Spanning across a massive 280 meters, the Helix Bridge is not only ideal for walks, but offers unobstructed views of some of Singapore’s best attractions. The Gardens by the Bay, the Marina Bay, the Singapore Flier and the Flower Dome can all be spotted from the bridge. As evening sets, the bridge gets lit up with several hundred twinkling lights, appearing even more magical.

Other Things to Do in Clarke Quay

Checkout the amazing things to do in Clarke Quay .

Asian Civilization Museum

With its diverse population of ethnicities and cultures, Singapore has earned the title of Asia's cultural melting pot. The Asian Civilisations Museum (ACM) takes you on a comprehensive journey of the people from across the area who have landed on our shores over the past two centuries to display this rich history. The ACM highlights historical linkages between Asian civilizations and between Asia and the rest of the globe. The Commerce and the Exchange of Ideas exhibit, located on the ground level, houses artifacts and artworks that convey tales about Singapore's past as a worldwide trade hub. Over 300 beautiful Chinese ceramics from the museum's collection are housed on the third level of the wing.

Clarke Quay Riverside

Owing to its prime location, the Clarke Quay Riverside is an ideal place to explore Singapore's nightlife. Strolling along the lovely riverfront will awaken your senses. You'll notice the lively atmosphere from the restaurants and entertainment establishments as you wander around. Choose between Zouk, Canvas, or Attica, three of the greatest clubs in the neighborhood. For those searching for a relaxing evening, there are several cozy pubs in the neighborhood. This is, of course, a popular location for foodies, where one can choose from a variety of restaurants providing Japanese, Indian, Chinese, Thai, and Western cuisines.

Fort Canning Park

A unique amalgamation of nature and history, the Fort Canning Park is inextricably tied to the city’s past. Although best suited for leisurely walks or strolls, the Park is home to some of Singapore’s most poignant historical sites as well. The Park's Sally Port, for example, is a secret entry, where the location acted as a military escape route during the war due to its restricted vision and tight road. The Battlebox is the place to go if you want to view a WWII subterranean command center. During the war, this location served as a bunker;it now contains historical artifacts from the country's worst time. Pay a visit to the Raffles House, which is currently used for weddings and other major festivities. The Fort Canning Lighthouse, on the other hand, was a key building throughout the conflict.

Clarke Quay Central

Central at Clarke Quay is a sleek new complex with over 280 stores offering food and fashion-related items and services, bringing a new dimension to riverfront shopping and dining. The shopping area is located above the Clarke Quay MRT station in the city center. LevelOne @Central, a small Harajuku evoking the atmosphere of Takeshita Dori, Meiji Dori, and Omotesando Dori, reflects the Japanese-inspired shopping at Central. It features clothing and accessories from labels such as Hang Ten, Giordano, Charles and Keith, and Blum & Co., which are popular among tourists as well as locals.

Enjoy Nightlife At Boat Quay

A trip to Boat Quay is an excellent alternative if you want a more casual but yet entertaining night out. This lively location is a favorite hangout for both food and nightlife fans. You may take a leisurely stroll around here and take in the beautiful sea views. There are also several outdoor eateries in the neighborhood due to its position; one can choose from Indian, Korean, Japanese, and Western cuisines among others. One of the many bars in the vicinity offers a pleasant drinking experience, as they offer a serene view of the bay with a delicious cocktail in hand.

G-Max Reverse Bungy

If you’re a tourist with a taste for adventure, the G Max Reverse Bungy should be right up your alley. It is, quite literally, a reverse bungee jump, where riders are cannonballed into the air at very high speed. Enjoy every moment while you're tossed around in the air. Try opening your eyes while dangling hundreds of feet in the air if you're courageous enough. Take note that the trip can reach speeds of up to 200 kilometers per hour. As a result, this attraction is not for the faint of heart!

How Much is a ROYAL CARIBBEAN SINGAPORE Cruise? How to Book? + Other Frequently Asked Questions

How Much is a ROYAL CARIBBEAN SINGAPORE Cruise? How to Book? + Other Frequently Asked Questions

By continuing to read this article, you agree to double-check with the concerned establishments for the latest updates.

For many of us, the idea of going on a cruise doesn’t usually cross our minds. If and when it does, it’s something we normally wouldn’t entertain. No surprises there, really. Cruising is one of those travel styles that often come with a lot of misconceptions .

When we asked our friends what they initially thought of cruises before they learned what it was actually like, most of them said the same thing — that it’s a luxurious trip for extremely wealthy retirees who only eat, drink and party on board. So yes, no thanks to how it’s often depicted in films, we think of cruises as something that’s way out of our reach.

But over the past several years, cruising has become more accessible. While no Philippine city is currently a home port to any major cruise ship, our neighbor Singapore is! Royal Caribbean’s Spectrum of the Seas , Asia’s largest cruise ship, is calling Singapore home until 2024, giving Southeast Asian travelers an opportunity to explore our home region in style. SG’s central location means easy access to neighboring ASEAN destinations. Depending on your travel dates, the ship may make a stop in Port Klang (gateway to Kuala Lumpur), Penang, Phuket, and more.

Spectrum of the Seas Royal Caribbean

If you’ve always been curious about going on a cruise, but you’re not sure if it’s something for you, it’s your lucky day! We were recently invited by Royal Caribbean to board and explore the Spectrum of the Seas as it sailed to Malaysia. In this article, we’ll answer some of your burning questions about cruising from Singapore!

WHAT'S COVERED IN THIS GUIDE?

Is a Royal Caribbean cruise expensive?

Not really. Not always. It can be expensive but it can be affordable, too.

The price of the cruise depends on many things: destination, travel dates, number of nights, number of guests, and the accommodation type. Hence, the rates vary greatly.

Let’s talk about travel dates first. If you do a quick search, you’ll find several cruises with the same itinerary (same number of nights and stops) but each sailing’s price is different. It’s very much like booking a flight. But you can easily find budget-friendly dates! Here’s a quick scan I did just now:

Royal-Caribbean-Cruise-Singapore Price 2

As you can see, it’s entirely possible to find affordable sailings, especially if you book in advance. Royal Caribbean has just recently opened their 2023-2024 seasons, so if you search now, there’s a big chance you’ll find reasonable prices.

On the other hand, November, December and January tend to have the steepest rates because they’re around major holidays — Christmas, New Year, and Chinese New Year! You’ll also notice the big difference between room types.

How much is a Royal Caribbean cruise from Singapore?

The rates vary depending on a number of factors, as mentioned. But here’s an example of an affordable find:

Cheap Royal Caribbean Spectrum of the Seas Singapore Ticket

A 3-night cruise that makes a stop in Penang can cost as low as SGD 767.52 (PHP 30,700) for 2 persons (interior room) for an August 2023 sailing. That’s SGD 383.75 (PHP 15,350) per person . This can go even lower if you’re traveling with seniors, who are eligible for a substantial discount.

I think that’s a fantastic deal considering that it’s inclusive of the following:

  • 3-night accommodations (interior)
  • UNLIMITED meals
  • entertainment (theatre, movies, etc.)
  • access to amenities (pools, some attractions)
  • stop in Malaysia (tour not included)
  • gratuities / tips
  • taxes and fees

In comparison, here’s what 2 travelers would probably spend on a typical DIY land tour in Singapore:

  • SGD 370 (P15,000) – Hotel (3 nights at a typical budget hotel at P5000/night)
  • SGD 200 (P8000) – Food (4 days at SGD 25/person/day)
  • SGD 200 (P8000) – Attractions & incidentals (SGD100 budget/person)
  • SGD 50 (P2000) – Transportation (SG Tourist pass SGD25/person)
  • TOTAL: SGD 820 (P33,200) or SGD 410 (P16,600)

Of course, depending on your travel preferences, your actual costs may be higher or lower than this, but for me, if I’m staying at a proper hotel, this is what I usually spend on a 4D3N Singapore trip.

But as you can see, the difference in expenses isn’t that much. The cruise cost is even lower, and it would also allow you to visit another country!

So for me, if you’re able to snag a good deal, going on a cruise is pretty much like your typical SG trip budget-wise.

Do children and seniors get a discount?

YES, most of the time! Senior guests (55 years old and above) can get a 10% discount off the cruise fare. This is equivalent to around SGD 80 – 120 per room, depending on cabin type.

Royal Caribbean also has several KIDS SAIL FREE promos, which could reduce the cruise fare for 3rd or 4th guests who are 12 years old or below, staying in the same room as the primary guests.

However, these promos are not available year-round and may not apply to certain dates. These discounts also cover the CRUISE FARE only. Taxes and other fees still need to be settled by the guests.

How to book a Royal Caribbean cruise?

For the Philippine market, the most ideal option is via www.cruising.com.ph , managed by the official Royal Caribbean representatives in the country.

Royal Caribbean Philippines Website

What’s great about booking on the official Philippine website is, you automatically get customer service and assistance in case you make a mistake, you wish to change something, or you want to extend payments. Most importantly, you have someone to call and assist you in case of emergency. Having easy access to customer support here in the Philippines is super valuable for two reasons:

  • The travel scene can still be unpredictable these days. Travel requirements and border policies change frequently and quickly. It’s nice to have someone you could turn to in case of urgent matters.
  • Booking and going on a cruise is a little bit complicated. Or at least, more complicated than the usual land tours. There are a lot of moving parts that you need to watch — flight schedules, cruise timings, travel requirements, check-in and boarding processes, activity and dining reservations, shore excursions, etc. Having someone to keep you updated can ensure you have a hassle-free journey.

If you book on the international website, you’re basically on your own (DIY) and should you need further assistance, you need to call their customer service in the United States (US). This happened to my aunt. She mistakenly booked a cabin on a deck and section of the ship that is different and so far away from her companions. She wanted to change rooms, but because she booked via the international website, she had to call the US number.

And if you use our promo code — WORTHIT — you’ll get an additional 5% DISCOUNT on the cruise fare! You can use this on top of any existing promos or discounts.

Royal Caribbean Promo Code Singapore

What are the cabin types available?

The Spectrum of the Seas has four major state room categories. But under each category, not all rooms are created equal. They have different configurations and sizes. But here’s what a quick description of a typical cabin under each category and what sets them apart from each other, sorted from cheapest to most expensive.

Royal Caribbean Room Types

  • Interior Room. No windows. Usually 166 square feet. Some interior rooms have a virtual balcony, which is basically a screen showing some footage of the sea.
  • Ocean View Room. Bigger, usually 182 square feet, and with a large window.
  • Balcony Ocean View Room. Or simply “balcony rooms”. More spacious, usually 198 square feet. The glass wall facing the sea also makes it look bigger. With a spacious balcony. – You’ll also find rooms tagged “ Obstructed Ocean View Balcony “, which refers to those rooms that have a balcony but the view is partially blocked by something. For example, Deck 6 is where the smaller boats are placed, obstructing the view of many of the rooms here. Because of this, obstructed balcony rooms are often cheaper than non-balcony ocean view rooms.
  • Suites. The largest, most luxurious, and most expensive accommodations. They come with a lot of perks, too. Some amenities are open only to suite guests. Here are the different suite types sorted by size and price. – Silver junior suite – Grand suite (1-bedroom) – Owner’s suite – Grand loft suite – Ultimate family suite (a two-level suite that has an indoor slide, an entertainment room, and three bedrooms, good for 11 pax)

Most staterooms (not including suites) can accommodate up to four (4) guests. (I say “most” because some Interior rooms can only host 2-3 pax.) That said, cramping four people in a room doesn’t necessarily give the best value for money. The price difference between booking 2 rooms with 2 guests each and booking 1 room with 4 guests isn’t much.

That’s not surprising given that when you book a cruise, you’re not just paying for a room but also access to endless array of food and amenities. In most instances, pricing is pretty much per person, not per room.

Ocean View Balcony Room Spectrum of the Seas

Which stateroom is the most ideal?

That depends on your personal preferences and budget.

Anything with a view of the ocean — balcony or no balcony — is always a good choice. It gives you some space to breathe. It’s also great if you’re the type who likes admiring the view of the ocean or waking up to a bit of sunshine. If you like taking photographs, the balcony also provides a fantastic vantage point especially when the ship is docked at a port of call. And a window is useful when checking the weather quickly, especially on days that you intend to disembark for a shore excursion.

Penang Malaysia

But if budget is a little tight, an interior stateroom isn’t bad at all. I have tried it before and I didn’t mind that there was no view because I was always outside exploring the other decks anyway. On our most recent cruise, we were assigned a balcony room, but to be completely honest, I didn’t really use it that much other than a couple of occasions when I wanted to take a photo of Penang’s and Singapore’s coasts.

This is probably why I think the obstructed ocean view balcony room can give me the most bang for my buck. I have never really tried it, but I’m guessing since I don’t really mind the view, it can still give me the space of a balcony room at the price of a regular ocean view room. If I would cruise again, this is probably what I would book if the price is much lower.

Spectrum of the Seas Life Boats

If you’re interested in an obstructed ocean view room, it might help to know how much of the view is blocked. It’s not visible on the international website, but it is clearly indicated on cruising.com.ph , allowing you to choose the room with the least obstruction at the same price. Here’s a sample:

Obstructed Ocean View Balcony Room Percentage 2

Needless to say, if you’re going for an obstructed ocean view room, pick one with the least view blockage.

Are meals included?

YES. Each booking comes with access to six (6) complimentary dining options:

  • Main Dining Room , a proper restaurant
  • Windjammer Marketplace , buffet-style
  • Splashaway Café
  • Sorrento’s – Authentic New York Pizzeria
  • The Café @Two70®
  • SeaPlex Dog House , a “food truck” serving tasty hot dogs!

Dining at any of the above is FREE of charge , and you can have as much food as you like. When I like a particular dish, I order another serving. Even at the Main Dining Room, if I like two main dishes, I order both. It’s okay and it’s allowed. You can even ask for items that are not on the current menu. I always order a cheese platter even if it’s not on the menu (LOL).

Because of the sheer diversity of the cuisines that are available for FREE, it is entirely possible to complete the trip without spending anything more on food.

Spectrum of the Seas Restaurant

But if you want to splurge a little, aside from these complimentary food spots, you’ll also find specialty restaurants that incur additional charges, including:

  • Chops Grille , steakhouse
  • Teppanyaki , Japanese food prepared and served by entertaining chefs
  • Jamie’s Italian by Jamie Oliver
  • Wonderland , creative and innovative Alice-in-Wonderland-themed dining
  • La Patisserie , pastries and desserts
  • Chef’s Table
  • Sichuan Red
  • The Hot Pot
  • Leaf & Bean cafe

Teppanyaki Spectrum of the Seas

Room service is also available but a US$7.95 service charge + 18% gratuity applies per stateroom order except for continental breakfast.

What are the attractions on board?

So I asked some of my friends who never considered cruising before: What do you think are in store for you on board? Unsurprisingly, most of them said “eat, drink, and party.” But nothing much other than that. I say “unsurprisingly” because years ago, I thought the same, too! When I was younger, the only mental images of cruising to me were painted by the movies I saw wherein rich retirees just socialize at cocktail parties. LOL.

FlowRider Spectrum of the Seas

But the truth is, boarding a cruise ship is like stepping into another world. There’s just a globe of things to do on board! Competition among cruise lines is intense, so every one is continuously one-upping the others by offering a lot of features, depending on the target market. Royal Caribbean, for example, has been filling their new ships to the brim with fun and exciting amenities. As one of their largest ships, the Spectrum of the Seas has more than its share of thrilling attractions and lifestyle spaces.

Here are some of them:

Spectrum of the Seas Amenities

  • RipCord by iFly , simulated skydiving experience (with extra cost)
  • FlowRider , simulated surfing activity (FREE, but instructor fees apply if you need one)
  • Skypad , bungee trampoline with virtual reality headset (FREE)
  • Rock climbing wall (FREE)
  • Royal Theatre , where musical and other entertaining performances are regularly staged (most shows are FREE)
  • SeaPlex , a sports complex where you can ride bumper cars; play tennis, pingpong and basketball; try archery; and more! (FREE)
  • North Star , a glass-enclosed observation pod and capsule ride that allows a 360-degree view (with extra cost)
  • Swimming pools and whirlpools (FREE)
  • Music hall , with band performances every night (FREE)
  • Star Moment , karaoke! (FREE)
  • Spas and gym (FREE)
  • Video game arcade

We were able to try almost everything on the list and we really had a lot of fun! We were at the Music Hall every night and would spend our high-seas day trying most of the rides and attractions.

SkyPad Trampoline Bungee

And oh, don’t forget to catch at least one of the awesome shows at the Royal Theatre and the Two70 !

Royal Caribbean Theatre

Are there attractions for children/toddlers?

YES. Children have their own swimming area, complete with water slides.

The SeaPlex, a sports complex, composed of game rooms and a lot of kid-friendly attractions like an arcade, video game rooms, archery room, bumper cars, and claw machines.

Kids Swimming Area

Some of the shows at the Royal Theatre are also wholesome, which kids can enjoy.

The Spectrum of the Seas also has a so-called Adventure Ocean program, which is basically a youth club or day care, where children ages 3 to 11 can play with other kids. Parents can drop off their kids here.

Is it senior-friendly?

YES, of course. There’s a reason why most people (mistakenly) assume it’s only for retirees and pensioners — when it comes to travel styles, cruising is a favorite among the elderly!

While the ship is gigantic, it is quite easy to explore. It has at least 16 guest elevators: 10 between the aft (back end) and midship, and another 6 towards the forward section. From here, most key attractions on board are easily accessible.

Cruising for Seniors

For guests with mobility issues, cabins near the elevators can be requested. Some rooms are also especially designed for PWD guests.

Cruising in general is popular among senior travelers because of the sheer convenience. Guests are well taken care of. For example, you never have to carry your luggage. Once you check it, the staff will deliver it to your room. And on the last night, you can leave it in the hallway again for the staff to pick it up. The next time you’ll see it again is once you disembark.

On top of all these, everything you need is on board. You may choose not to explore the stops or ports of call at all and still have a grand time.

What are the usual destinations?

The journey always starts and ends in Singapore. But the usual stops, called ports of call , depend on the number nights.

Spectrum of the Seas Shore Excursions

  • 3 nights: Penang
  • 4 nights: Port Klang/Kuala Lumpur and Penang, OR Penang and Phuket
  • 5 nights: Port Klang/Kuala Lumpur, Penang, AND Phuket

The arrival and departure times vary, but you’ll usually get just a day or half-day at each stop.

The last full day onboard is usually spent at high seas, so you’ll be on the ship the entire time.

How to explore each port of call?

You have the option to book a guided tour from Royal Caribbean called SHOREX (Shore Excursion) or you can explore the destination on your own.

The beauty of joining a shorex is they will be taking care of everything for you, including the transfers to and from the port, but it usually comes with a rigid itinerary.

Spectrum of the Seas Kuala Lumpur Penang

If you want more freedom and flexibility, you can explore independently. But just make sure that you’ll be back to the ship before the set time. You can see the arrival and departure times on the Royal Caribbean app.

Penang and Phuket are quite easy to explore because the pier isn’t too far away from the main points of interest or city center. But Port Klang is tricky because it’s roughly 1.5 to 2 hours from Kuala Lumpur, depending on traffic conditions. This means, you’ll be spending at least 3 hours on the road.

Important! You have to be fully vaccinated to explore ports of call.

Is airfare to Singapore included?

No, it’s not included in the published rates.

Some travel agencies can offer fly-and-cruise packages, but if you’re doing it on your own, you’ll have to book the flight separately.

If budget is an issue, try to search for a week that can give you lower rates for BOTH the cruise AND flights. I know it’s easier said than done, but it is possible. I am able to find some dates that do match, especially when airlines have seat sales.

Airfare is more erratic, so that’s what I usually check first. Don’t book flights yet, just scan. Then, when you find cheap flights to Singapore, search for an affordable cruise. When you find one that matches your flight dates, book the flight and the cruise immediately. Please mind your timings. Take note of the departure and arrival times before finalizing your flight reservation.

How much budget should I prepare for a Royal Caribbean cruise from Singapore?

Again, that depends on a lot of factors especially the room type and travel dates. But let’s say that you’re interested in the cheapest possible option — interior stateroom on a sailing scheduled in an off month a year away. Supposing you’re a couple flying from Manila, here’s how much you are most likely to spend per person:

  • P10,000 – roundtrip Manila-Singapore flight
  • P1620 – Philippine travel tax
  • P2500 – 1 night at a hotel in Singapore (P5000/night divided by 2 pax)
  • P15,350 – Cruise (inclusive of meals)
  • P5,000 – transportation and incidental expenses
  • P34,470 – TOTAL

Let’s round it off to a clean P35,000 .

This is the minimum you can expect to spend. But it’s always wise to add some allowance for other possible expenses. You might find yourself wanting a drink, buy a souvenir, try a specialty restaurant or visit an attraction in your free time in Singapore. Having a wiggle room would allow you to enjoy more!

Of course, if you fail to find flights and sailings at these prices, you’ll end up with a higher total cost, so plan your trip well.

If I test positive for COVID-19 before my cruise schedule, can I rebook? What are my options?

For cruises departing on or before 30 April 2023: If you or any of your traveling party tests positive for COVID-19 within 10 days before your sailing date or at the boarding terminal, 100% of the cruise fare will be refunded.

(As of August 30, 2022)

Is it worth it?

Okay, before anything else, full disclosure: My most recent cruise was sponsored by Royal Caribbean, so I may have biases. But in my honest opinion, sponsored or not, a SPECTRUM OF THE SEAS cruise is worth it! Especially if you’re able to snag promos and low prices!

It’s a travel experience that I could recommend in a heartbeat for families, friends, and couples celebrating a special occasion. When I was on board, I kept thinking about how much my sister and my senior mother would love the experience.

I absolutely enjoyed my stay that I’m already planning to do it again, this time with family. (And yes, I will be shouldering all my expenses this time!)

Singapore river | bumboat history.

Since the colonial era, the Singapore River has been the lifeblood of Singapore itself. The strategic location of the famous river quickly drew a variety of sailing crafts looking for trade routes.

Singapore River quickly grew into a bustling hub of commerce with the iconic bumboats transporting all sorts of goods up and down the waterways.

The bumboats themselves, stocky wooden boats, clustered around the Singapore quays during this golden age of trade and bargaining. Historically, these bumboats often had faces and obscure eyes painted on them – implied to “see potential danger ahead”. Also known as tongkang, these strange barges are full of character and cultural heritage.

These days, the Singapore River stands as an iconic tourist attraction and cultural landmark. Far from forgetting its roots, Singapore offers a number of enjoyable bumboat rides to pay respects to the grandiose history of the Singapore River.

SINGAPORE RIVER CRUISE PRICES 2021

BEST TIME TO GO ON A SINGAPORE RIVER CRUISE

The best time to begin your Singapore River Cruise will determine the kind of experience you have. To go in the morning on a clear day will provide a refreshing recline in the sunshine on deck. Watch the sunlight reflect off the dazzling Singapore buildings and enigmatic architecture.

A late afternoon river cruise will bring spectacular sunset views as well as the astounding sight of Singapore’s city lights at night. With nightfall comes the thrum of busy nightclubs and brightly lit bars lined along the jetties to visit – if you so wish. If you’re cruising at night, be sure to take in the welcoming glow of lights over the inky waters of the Marina district as you cruise past Merlion Park.

Regardless of when you decide to begin your adventure, a Singapore River Cruise is a breathtaking experience.

WHERE TO BOARD A RIVER CRUISE

It is highly recommended that newcomers begin their first river cruise at the standard Clarke Bay ticketing counter. This counter can be found next to the GX 5 Extreme Swing & Trampoline Bungy.

While passengers have the option to ride the cruise all the way around back to Clarke Bay, the bumboat cruise can also serve as a fun way to travel to a different jetty along the Singapore River. Hop off at your preferred stop and continue your exploration of the many revived storefronts and towering futuristic buildings.

Passengers may disembark at these Singapore River Cruise jetties:

ICONIC LANDMARKS TO SEE ALONG A SINGAPORE RIVER CRUISE

Some of the most iconic historical landmarks, exclusive to Singapore can be seen during a bumboat river cruise. Here are some marvelous monuments and attractions to look out for along your bumboat route:

  • The Merlion is an 8.6 white cement fondue statue that stands proudly at the end of the Marina Bay waterfront. This massive lion’s head situated on a fishtail and resting on smooth crescent waves has become an iconic Singapore symbol. Keep a lookout for the magnificent beast when chugging past the Marina Bay area. And don’t forget your cameras.
  • Raffles Landing Site is a large marble statue that can be seen near the Boat Quay. This statue was built in honor of Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles and his historical influence on Singapore’s trading route. Any history fan will appreciate a glimpse of this historical figure immortalized in stone.
  • The Esplanade often referred to as the Durian due to the spikes that adorn the two glass domes, is a modern art center. Located near the waterfront in Marina Bay, this amazing feat of architectural genius is a must-see for any fans of modern art.
  • The Marina Bay Sands is the most identifiable of Singapore attractions. This resort situated along Marina Bay comprises three hotel towers. These 55-story towers are all connected by a sky terrace that forms the roof. The strange architecture and sheer enormity of this establishment make the Marina Bay Sands an interesting sight to look out for during your cruise.
  • ArtScience Museum and its obscure architecture are almost impossible to miss. Singapore is full of national galleries and museums, with this one boasting the most interesting exterior. This museum is located near the Marina Bay Sands and effortlessly fuses art and science much like the name suggests. The design of the building itself is intended to represent the welcoming hand of Singapore. Ten protrusions form the “fingers” of the museum and this allows for natural light to filter into the building during exhibitions. Don’t miss this enigmatic attraction as you cruise past.

Disney has a price problem. It has ambitious plans to fix that

D isney recently announced a huge slate of projects for parks and cruises in front of 12,000 of its most loyal fans, who will almost certainly return to Disney’s theme parks to experience those new offerings, no matter what it costs.

But whether a frequent visitor or a first-timer, Disney’s price hikes combined with a global inflation crisis left many families unable to afford trips to witness the technological feats and fantasy immersion the “Happiest Place on Earth” promises.

“It is not news that a Disney trip is expensive, but the magnitude and speed of price increases over roughly the past five years was jarring to many respondents, and we do not believe similar increases over roughly the next five years are feasible,” a Raymond James survey of 20 Disney “superfans,” travel agents and Orlando-area business owners found.

Disney warned in its August 7 earnings report that domestic parks attendance was underperforming expectations as visitors become more price-conscious. US parks profit fell during the last quarter, between April and July. Disney CFO Hugh Johnston said on the company’s earnings call that there may be a couple of quarters of similar results.

To keep its customers coming through the gates, the company will keep providing a range of pricing and options, said Josh D’Amaro, chairperson of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, in an interview with CNN.

“What we will continue to do is make sure we provide as much access and flexibility as we possibly can, so as many of our fans can experience these things as possible,” D’Amaro said.

In response to criticism about high costs, Disney has consistently touted lower-priced ticket options and “value season” deals at its resort hotels to allow families to visit, even if they’re on a tight budget.

Disney isn’t the only company struggling with customers who are spending less. Demand for the travel industry is softening, marking the end of the “revenge travel” fad in the months after pandemic restrictions were lifted. With stimulus money padding their bank accounts, people had been spending more freely then, making up after a year of missed vacations.

D’Amaro said he’s confident Disney can navigate these bumps in the road.

“We have proven ourselves to be incredibly adept at managing through situations where there’s some change in consumer behavior,” he said. “We have even more sophistication in our ability to deal with any of these fluctuations, whether it’s through precise promotional deployment, or management of cost or engagement with our guests.”

What the new announcements mean for ticket prices

The new announcements promising guests a chance to ride through the “Encanto” “casita,” to fight a battle in Wakanda or experience an ominous land themed to villains, are all part of a $60 billion investment in parks and cruises that Disney has pledged over the next decade – an investment that will need to be paid for over time with consumer dollars.

But that massive investment doesn’t mean Disney will immediately hike ticket prices, said Tom Bricker, co-founder of DisneyTouristBlog.com . It’s economics 101.

“Costs will rise as demand rises, which can happen as a result of new additions. Right now, demand is flat or falling,” Bricker said, in reference to the latest earnings report that suggested the moderation in attendance might last into 2025. “With 2025 also being the opening of Universal’s Epic Universe, there will likely also be negative impacts on Walt Disney World attendance. It won’t be catastrophic—Epic Universe will draw new visitors to Orlando, who will also visit Disney—but it will be damaging in the near term.”

As a result, Bricker said park visitors may see new parades and shows, and discounts in the coming year, as Disney tries to keep people coming, especially as the new lands and rides will still be under construction for some time.

Still, the price of Disney tickets today compared to past years prices out some families.

Shortly after Disneyland in California opened in 1955, guests could buy admission plus 10 rides for a total of $2.50. Adjusted for inflation, that $2.50 would be $28.74 today. When Disney World in Florida opened in 1977, admission plus a book of tickets for seven rides was $8 in total. In 2024 dollars, that would be $61.66.

Currently, the cheapest one-day tickets to Disneyland or Walt Disney World during the “value” season are $104 and $116.09, respectively.

But the admission prices when the parks first opened were for entry into a single park, with far fewer attractions than what a Disney guest experiences today. Today, Disneyland Resort has two parks with more than 65 total attractions; Disney World has four theme parks and two water parks with more than 150 attractions.

“Value” tickets have increased less than 1% annually in the last 10 years, noted Don Munsil, who runs MouseSavers, a travel website that maintains historic records of Disney prices. But the number of dates on the calendar when these prices apply has diminished.

On the high end, Munsil said the most expensive single-day ticket to only one park during peak season at Disneyland in California ($194) has increased an average of about 7% each year over the last decade. A similar peak season ticket at Disney World in Florida ($201.29) has increased an average of 6.4% each year during that time.

The increases on these peak tickets outpace inflation over the same period.

According to MouseSavers, tickets for a family of four to hop between the Walt Disney World parks for four days during peak season costs about $3,098 in 2024, without factoring in additional services like access to faster “Lightning Lanes,” which used to be free.

That’s about double what they cost 10 years ago, and 3.6 times the price 20 years ago.

Paid access to Lightning Lanes, which first debuted at Disney World in 2021, can cost another $17-$41 per person, per day, depending on the park and the season.

Certain popular rides aren’t included, however. Using the Lightning Lane specifically for “Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance,” for example, would cost about $25 extra per person.

But Munsil points out that this is the cheapest of any theme park “express” service on the market. He said Universal charges $105-$310 per person, per day, for their express pass, depending on number of parks and options. Cedar Point charges $95-$120 per person, per day. Busch Gardens charges $60-$150 per person, per day.

The grievance from the fan community is that this used to be free at Disney parks. Transportation from the Orlando airport to Disney World property also used to be included for Disney hotel guests, but that service has been discontinued.

Food and souvenirs at the parks also cost a lot more.

A Mickey ice cream bar cost $2.59 15 years ago, according to Disney Food Blog . If only adjusted for inflation, it should cost $3.78 in 2024, but instead, the price is $6.29.

Light-up specialty balloons were $15 in 2015 . If adjusted for inflation, that type of balloon would cost $19.60. In 2024, that balloon costs…$20. So not everything at the parks outpaces inflation.

Is it worth it?

“I always joke that three things in life are certain - death, taxes, and Disney parks raising ticket prices,” said Mindy Marzec, who runs thisfairytalelife.com. “Prices are going to go up no matter what, so when you hear all about these exciting projects in development, it feels like the price is more worth it.”

Prices of regular tickets have not increased at nearly the same pace as annual passes, Munsil points out. He said the hardcore fans are the ones who are often quoted feeling jaded, because they go frequently and see the prices of their passes go up.

But he said the primary audience, especially for Disney World, are first-time visitors who are amazed and delighted by the incomparable entertainment and detail that they see. The cheapest available ticket to Disney World has remained the same price as it was in 2019, and is $15 more than it was in 2013.

“I think the Disney parks are a huge bargain,” Munsil said, noting that the cheapest available ticket at about $110 a day (or less, with seasonal discounts), gives someone more than 10 hours of entertainment, depending on one’s stamina.

“The Disney parks have some of the most amazing, technologically sophisticated rides and experiences in the world. It’s a totally unique, magical place,” Munsil said. “What’s that worth? The only comparable place is Universal Studios, and it costs about the same, and for (IMO) parks that are just a little less amazing (though still worthwhile).”

For frequent visitors who balk at paying more for the products and services they’re accustomed to, the question is whether the experience is still worth the money. Following the D23 announcements of upcoming developments, many devotees are saying “yes, ”even if it may mean saving up for fewer trips.

Content creator Victoria Wade, said, “In recent years, there has been a feeling that the fans have been nothing more than dollar signs and that our feedback wasn’t taken seriously since the return to normality with the pandemic.”

Wade said the perceived instability of Disney leadership, and adding paid services and experiences that were once free, “led to a lack of trust between the company and the community.”

But Wade said that the major announcements made at the Disney fan convention, D23, gave her the feeling that the company is listening to feedback, like adding a new nighttime parade at Magic Kingdom, which loyal visitors had requested for a long time.

Munsil said the Disney parks are “expensive, yes, but there’s nothing else on Earth like them.”
