Bridgetown Barbados Port Guide
On your Barbados cruise, you’ll dock in Bridgetown, the capital of Barbados and an important port city in the Caribbean. What’s not to love about Barbados? Miles of sandy beaches, turquoise island waters, and an abundance of plantations and historic sites to tour mean you’ll find plenty to occupy you during your time here. Be sure to try traditional Barbadian dishes like cou cou and macaroni pie, and make time to enjoy a rum tasting or distillery tour.
Children and families will be captivated by protected species like the West African green monkey at the Barbados Wildlife Reserve. You can head east to Bathsheba for plentiful chances to snorkel, surf, and dive. If your cruise ship docks in Bridgetown, be sure to stop in the numerous shops and boutiques in the historic downtown and visit sites memorializing British rule over the island. On your Caribbean cruise , Bridgetown stands out. It’s colorful, historic, and laid back, and the rest of Barbados is easily accessible by car or taxi.

Top sights & attractions for cruises to bridgetown, historic bridgetown.
Bridgetown is the capital of Barbados, and the city recently became a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2011. While on your Barbados cruise here, walk the winding streets (built naturally instead of in a typical grid system), tour the area’s Parliament House, and visit the British colonial garrison. There’s plenty in Bridgetown to take up an entire day, from historic sites to languid buffet-style lunches at spots like Brown Sugar or The Balcony.
Harrison’s Cave
Take an underground tram to reach these caves. As one of Barbados’ most popular attractions, these limestone caves are unlike anything else in the region. The walking paths outside of the caves paint a picture of Barbados’ lush landscape, while the cave stream itself is a perfect excursion for nature lovers and geology experts.
St. Nicholas Abbey
This former sugar plantation now offers tours of its steam mill as well as tastings from its rum distillery, making for a perfect 2-3 hour afternoon tour of the abbey. Walk through the plantation gardens, enjoying the local flora. The last tour goes out at 3:30 pm, and the abbey is closed on Saturdays.
George Washington House
George Washington stayed at this historic home in 1751, when he was just 19 years old. Today, a tour of the house is well worth a visit, and will give you a sense of Bridgetown’s history from hundreds of years ago, including how underground tunnels beneath the house were used for very interesting purposes.
St. Michael’s Cathedral
While on your cruise to Barbados, you can’t miss St. Michael’s Cathedral in the center of Bridgetown, where the Anglican church still has weekend and weekday services. U.S. President George Washington once went to a church service here in the 18th century. The church dates back to the 1600s and has been built and rebuilt over the centuries.

Marvel at Protected Animals at Barbados Wildlife Reserve
Drive less than 45 minutes north of Bridgetown for a day among protected species and lush forest. Home to green monkeys, snakes, various bird species, and many others, kids and families will love seeing these animals walking freely through the habitat. The best time to see the animals is at their lunchtime around 2pm each day.
Enjoy Barbados’ Many Beaches
There’s an abundance of beaches on the island, almost too many to choose from, but each has its own vibe. Crane Beach has strong waves and turquoise water, but it’s better for activities like snorkeling and swimming, or head to Bathsheba less than an hour from Bridgetown for excellent surfing waters and a more rugged shorefront. If you want to stay here the port in Bridgetown, there’s Brownes, where shipwrecks in the area mean there’s plenty for divers and snorkelers to see underwater.
Take a Drive Along the Island’s East Coast
Take a drive or a taxi tour towards Bathsheba, Barbados, where you’ll hit the east coast of the island in no time. Stop in small fishing villages or enjoy the unique beaches here, which are characterized by jutting rock formations. It’s a more rugged landscape here than in Bridgetown, so you shouldn’t miss it for a complete picture of the island.

For a more upscale dining experience in Bridgetown, take a seat on the boardwalk for lunch or dinner at Tapas, a wine bar and restaurant where the waterfront views add to the charm. Culture & History of the Bridgetown Cruise Port
European colonization came to Barbados in the 16th century, but before that, the area was home to the native Arawaks and the Caribs. Barbados is heavily influenced by West African culture and the effects of over 300 years of British occupation. The region’s profitable sugar cane trade was built by the slave trade, but it took until 1834 for slavery to finally be abolished in Barbados. In 1838, former slaves celebrated their full freedom in the streets of Barbados by singing and dancing folk songs. In 1966, Barbados was declared a constitutional monarchy.
Barbados is known for its unique culinary offerings too, from macaroni pie, cou cou, fish cakes, and other regional delicacies must be experienced while on your Barbados cruise. You can arrange for a taxi to pick you up later, or to take you to multiple destinations. There is also a shuttle service from the port into Bridgetown available for cruise passengers to take.

Bridgetown isn’t known for its shopping, but there are still many options for all kinds of offerings. You’ll find duty-free shops near the port, ideal for quick souvenir shopping or if you eye any must-have jewelry or clothing while you’re in the cruise terminal. Shopping on Broad Street is most popular for jewelry and higher-end wares, including a Tiffany and Co. Swan Street is where locals shop for clothing and shoes.

The official currency of the area is the Barbadian dollar (B$), but US dollars are often accepted on the island, particularly at larger institutions like hotels. You’ll find banks along Broad Street, and ATMs are plentiful. Because Barbados is a relatively small island - 21 miles (34 km) long and no more than 14 miles (23 km) wide - all attractions are close to the port, allowing the cruise traveler to enjoy a leisurely day at a laid back pace.
Cruise travelers will find lots of things to do in Barbados: be it perusing impeccably preserved landmarks (like the Parliament Building and Museum, a couple of churches, or the Synagogue and its Museum).

Bathsheba - Barbados

If you like contemplating unique sceneries don't miss the Bathsheba Bay or the Gun Hill Signal Station . For those that enjoy active pursuits, or just basking in the sun there are many and delightful beaches in Barbados, relatively close to the cruise port.
After all, Barbados rich history and cultural past are preserved in an exotic but harmonious mix of quaint tropical ambiance, lush landscapes, beautiful landmarks, and stunning beaches. It should be underlined that Historic Bridgetown and its Garrison is a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2011.

Where is the port and cruise ships dock
The Cruise Port aka Deep Water Harbor is located on the South-Western side of the Island and, although not exactly right by the center of Bridgetown, it is within walking distance - 1 mile (or 1.700 meters) - to the main streets of the city.

At The Pier in Bridgetown, Barbados
Most luxury cruise lines (like Regent or Crystal) offer complimentary shuttle buses . If your cruise line doesn't offer a shuttle bus, there is also a paid bus - US $2.00 per person, each way - right outside the terminal. Taxis are also available but it doesn't make much sense to pay extra unless you really need to.

The cruise terminal is one of the best in the Caribbean with all services and amenities the cruise traveler may require. On a large building, you will find an excellent Visitor Information Center , an area with Free mobile-friendly Wi-Fi , restrooms, souvenir and duty-free shops (both jewelry and liquor) and, last but not least, a post office where you can buy Barbadian Postal Stamps known for their exquisite designs.

Visitor Information Center
Outside the Terminal, there is a dedicated shaded area for tour buses (on the left side), a few more souvenir and clothing shops (t-shirts, beach attire), and local transportation services such as Car Rental, Scooters, and ATV - be aware that driving in Barbados is on the left as expected on a former British Colony.

Outside The Terminal - Tour Buses
There are also a couple of open-air bars where you can savor typical Bajan cuisine or the famously refreshing Banks (the local beer). Here are the services and amenities cruise travlers will find at the cruise terminal in 2023

Within walking distance
For those that enjoy walking, the path from the exit of the Cruise Terminal along the ocean up to the historical downtown and the Careenage (an interesting area of Bridgetown) is both safe and pleasurable . Have in mind that it will be hot and you should wear cool clothing, walking shoes, a hat, and sunscreen is never frivolous.

Walking Path to Bridgetown
The wide avenue outside the exit gates of the cruise port is the Princess Alice Highway. On the right side, by the ocean, the path is lined with trees and along the way, there are a few places with benches and tables to have a rest. On the left side there are a few places worth a look: the Rolli's Bar and Grill, the Caribbean Cigar Company selling the Royal Barbados brand and the Pelican Village Craft Center .
The Highlights of Bridgetown
Once you pass the Bridgetown Fish Market (on the right) you would have walked already 1/2 mile (800 meters). Around 300 feet (100 meters) more and you will have the alternative to keep walking straight into Hincks Street or turn left into Cumberland Street . The latter will take you to Jubilee Gardens and St. Mary's Church (a major Anglican church in Bridgetown) which is a stone's throw away from the shopping area of downtown (Broad Street and around).

Interior St. Mary's Church in Bridgetown
The walk into Hinks Street leads to Wharf Road, a Boardwalk and the Careenage. Along the way, at the Cloister Building, on the left, the Agapey Chocolate Factory is a place to visit if you have a sweet tooth and even consider a tour (1 hour for US$20).
After a right followed by a left turn, you will find yourself on Wharf Road with its boardwalk and it becomes clear that you are in historical surroundings. This is the place where, once upon a time, ships were careened onto a side to be repaired, scrubbed and painted, hence the Careenage eponymous. Now, on the narrow mouth of the Constitution River , sleek yachts, touristic and fishing expeditions boats dock on both banks. Farther along, the Wharf Road borders the National Heroes Square with a statue of Lord Nelson and the imposing Parliament Building which are impossible to miss.

Parliament Building in Bridgetown
The pedestrian Chamberlain Bridge crosses the river to the south bank. At the end of the bridge, the Independence Arch is a famous landmark and a great photo op. Immediately after, on the left, is the seafront greenery of Interior St. Mary's Church and on the right is where you could have a refreshing drink or a light lunch before the Covid pandemic. Unfortunately, popular places like the Marina Bar and the Waterfront Café have closed down.

Chamberlain Bridge

For those interested in all things historical, you should return to the National Heroes Square to visit the Parliament Building, St. Michaels Cathedral (built in 1784) and the Nidhe Israel Museum and Synagogue (an absolute must-see regardless of your faith or absence of).
If shopping is on your plans, turn left on Heroes Square into Board Street as this is where the best duty-free shops and departments stores are found.

Among the typical stores found all over the caribbean, here are some othe best shops you will find in Barbados Cruise port:
- Colombian Emeralds
- Diamonds International
- Litlle Switzerland
- The Royal Shop
- David Yurman
It took a few calls at Bridgetown Cruise Port for the Editor to realized that the Careenage is very close to the famous Boatyard Beach Bar and Club - less than 1/4 of a mile (400 meters) south of the Independence Arch. In fact, the Carlisle Bay's northern tip is the mouth of the Constitutional River , and on the bay, the Boatyard is just one of the many clubs and bars that line the sugar white sands and turquoise waters of Barbados spectacular beaches of this Bay and where the best snorkeling sites in Barbados are located. However, be aware that Carlisle Bay is close to two miles long.
Editors' Tip: if the Boatyard or any of the beach clubs on Carlisle Bay are on your to do list, it is advisable to get there (or back) by taxi as the walk from the cruise port is over 2 miles (3 km).

7 Caribbean Cruises We Love
These luxurious, intimate ships and itineraries are afar’s top picks for exploring the region..
- Copy Link copied

Some of the best Caribbean sailings will take you off the beaten cruise path to unspoiled gems like Grenada.
Courtesy of Hugh Whyte/Unsplash
The Caribbean is by far the world’s most popular cruise region—some 11.9 million passengers sailed in the Caribbean, Bahamas, and Bermuda in 2022, according to the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), compared to 3.2 million in the western and central Mediterranean, the next biggest market. Travelers board ships headed to the region year-round for sunny skies, sugary white sands, and the crystal blue sea. While it’s not exactly an under-the-radar destination, the best Caribbean cruises will bring you to multiple islands, including some lesser-frequented gems, and away from the larger cruise ship crowds.
On these cruises, you can explore the fascinating and diverse cultures and traditions throughout the Caribbean, and free your mind while hiking tropical landscapes or diving with colorful sea creatures. Small and medium-size ships get you to both known ports and off-the-beaten path places for more intimate beach and island experiences.

Where Caribbean cruises sail
The standard cruise routes in the Caribbean that the big ships visit, often on sailings from ports in Florida, are designed for a joyous and carefree vacation escape, at a price that many people can afford.
Eastern Caribbean cruises sail to tried-and-true islands such as the Bahamas , St. Thomas, St. Maarten, and sometimes Puerto Rico . Western Caribbean itineraries visit islands such as Grand Cayman, Jamaica , and Cozumel, or other ports in Mexico, and sometimes Belize and Honduras. Southern Caribbean cruises might venture to the Leeward Antilles for a taste of Dutch Caribbean culture, and attractions such as the otherworldly landscape of Aruba’s Arikok National Park .
Other popular places on the standard cruise map include the Dominican Republic , where you will find the oldest street in the Americas in the capital city of Santo Domingo; and Tortola, the largest of the British Virgin Islands, with access to beaches and mountain treks.
Ships that carry fewer than 1,000 people, and sometimes much less than that, have more flexibility in terms of ports, and sail on itineraries that venture to more low-key patches of paradise, such as the smaller British Virgin Islands; French Caribbean islands that include Guadeloupe, Martinique, and St. Bart’s ; and south to the glorious, unspoiled Grenadines and Grenada .
Smaller ships also tend to slow down itineraries, with late nights or overnights in port, so that you can enjoy the local nightlife. The departure points for these cruises are places you may want to linger before or after your sailing, such as lively Barbados , both a culinary and rum capital.
Best Caribbean cruises

On the Explora I , there’s a dedicated kids club, ensuring that all members of the family have fun.

Explora Journeys’ A Journey to an Arcadian Antilles Adventures
- Best for: luxury family sailing
- To book: 7-night Journey to an Arcadian Antilles Adventures, round-trip from Barbados, from $4,850 per person (with discounted rates for children)
- Islands: St. Lucia, St. Kitts, St. Bart’s (overnight), Dominica, Martinique, Grenada
Geneva-based MSC Group , which also owns Italian cruise line MSC Cruises, launched Explora Journeys this year in an effort to bring the casual luxury resort experience to the high seas. The new line’s recently debuted first ship, the 922-passenger Explora I (which we recently reviewed ), is a posh multi-generational playground with four pools, pickleball, ample live entertainment, 18 restaurants and lounges, suites that connect to accommodate family groups and, key for those with youngsters, a supervised program for kids age 6 to 17 that’s open until midnight each day. The cushy Nautilus Club is equipped with foosball and the latest generations of video games and VR consoles, with activities such as technology tournaments, plus discussions on ocean conservation. Children’s bathrobes, slippers, and hangers match adult amenities. The luxe line has kids’ pricing too—up to 50 percent off fares.

Embrace the chill island vibes on the 26-passenger Vela , operated by Island Windjammers.
Courtesy of Island Windjammers
Island Windjammers’ 6-night Caribbean sailing
- Best for: laid-back island vibe
- To book: 6-night sailing on the 26-passenger Vela , from $2,825 per person
- Islands: St. Bart’s and Anguilla
Island Windjammers is the kind of under-the-radar experience you want to keep a secret. Fans love this tiny cruise line that keeps alive the long tradition of casual windjammer cruising in the Caribbean—with a 26-passenger classic clipper ship, Vela , and a 10-passenger schooner, Diamant . The company has been around since 2009 and has an amazing track record with its loyal customer base; so, if you want to book a cruise, you’d best do so well in advance. And don’t overpack; these sailings are very casual—T-shirts and shorts are the standard dress code. This experience is about lingering on islands or hanging out on deck, watching the sails catch the breeze, relaxing with a complimentary rum punch and dining alfresco. There’s also the thrilling opportunity to jump into the water from the rope swing, or to get out onto the sea on a selection of water toys, such as paddleboards and kayaks.

On the recently renovated SeaDream Yacht Club ships, passengers will truly feel the romance of traveling by sea.
Courtesy of Greg Ceo/SeaDream Yacht Club
SeaDream Yacht Club’s Saba, the Grenadines and Beyond cruise
- Best for: small ship experience
- To book: 7-night Caribbean itinerary , from $3,899 per person
- Islands: Antigua, Nevis, Saba, St. Bart’s (overnight), Guadeloupe (Îles des Saintes), Bequia and Mayreau (St. Vincent & the Grenadines), Barbados
SeaDream Yacht Club’s pair of yachts, SeaDream I and SeaDream II , cruise to dreamy Caribbean destinations in relaxed luxury. My favorite of the line’s Caribbean itineraries sails between St. John’s, Antigua, and Bridgetown, Barbados, and includes the less-visited Grenadines, though you also can’t go wrong with sailings that linger, for instance, in the British Virgin Islands. Recently renovated with a more contemporary vibe, the 112-passenger yachts deliver such luxuries as a romantic open-air overnight under a cozy duvet in a Balinese Dream Bed, isolated on the bow. There are new designer hammocks and parasols out on deck, too, as well as a pair of Jacuzzis for two. Dining is mostly alfresco, adding to the romance of being at sea.

Embrace your inner chef by enrolling in some S.A.L.T. culinary experiences on Silversea’s Silver Nova .
Courtesy of Silversea
Silversea’s Bridgetown to Fort Lauderdale, Florida cruise
- Best for: eco-conscious luxury ship
- To book: 7-night Bridgetown to Fort Lauderdale cruise , from $4,950 person
- Islands: Barbados, Bequia, St. Lucia, Dominica, Antigua, Virgin Gorda, Puerto Rico (San Juan)
On ultraluxury line Silversea’s new Silver Nova , guests linger on a reimagined resort deck with the pool not in the center, as on most cruise ships, but off to the side for optimal sea views. Relaxing on a cushy lounge chair on the Euro-centric ship (headquartered in Monaco, Silversea vessels feature contemporary Italian furnishings and a European feel onboard), you might imagine you are at a fancy resort in, say, St. Tropez. New outdoor dining and imbibing spaces add to the elevated beach club vibe. The 728-passenger ship is both the largest and most eco-friendly ship in the fleet, equipped with a large-scale hybrid power source, which combines hydrogen fuel cells, batteries, and dual engines that run on liquified natural gas. For foodies, the S.A.L.T. program focuses on local food and drink culture, both on and off the ship. In Bequia, you might splurge on a bespoke excursion about sea salt that includes a six-course lunch at Grenadine Wild Sea Salt (a company that produces artisanal sea salt from the waters off Bequia). Most excursions (though not this one) are complimentary.

This Viking sailing kicks off with an overnight in San Juan, Puerto Rico—for some extra time to explore the colorful old section
Viking Cruises’ West Indies Explorer itinerary
- Best for: value
- To book: 10-night West Indies Explorer cruise , from $3,299 per person
- Islands: San Juan, Puerto Rico (overnight), Tortola, St. Kitts, St. Lucia, Barbados, Dominica, Antigua, St. Maarten, St. Thomas
For those seeking more than just a beach scene, Viking Cruises offers a broad selection of daily tours focused on cultural and natural attractions in its all-inclusive pricing. Onboard the 930-passenger Viking Sea , sailing from San Juan on a 10-night West Indies Explorer itinerary , passengers visit nine countries with the opportunity to deeply immerse themselves in the Caribbean’s British, French, Dutch, and African history. Learn about the rich tradition of batiking (an ancient cloth dying method) with a hands-on class in St. Kitts, and explore the role of women in agriculture at an organic farm in St. Lucia. The cruise starts with an overnight in San Juan , offering some time to better understand the rhythm of that city before sailing away. Among things we love about this ship is the Nordic Spa, where after a full day of active exploration you can heal your body with a warm soak then wake yourself up at the freezing snow grotto, before more warm water surrendering.

The Pink Agave restaurant on the adults-only Virgin Voyages, where it’s all about the fun drinking, dining, and social atmosphere.
Courtesy of Virgin Voyages
Virgin Voyages’ Sunsets in the Lesser Antilles
- Best for: great dining, dancing, and entertainment for grown-ups
- To book: 7-night Sunsets in the Lesser Antilles cruise , round-trip from San Juan, from $2,550 for two
- Islands: Puerto Rico, St. Kitts & Nevis, Martinique, Curaçao, and Aruba
The only cruise line on this list with vessels that accommodate more than 1,000 passengers, Virgin Voyage’s 2,770-passenger ships are restricted to adults ages 18 and up and operate with more cheekiness than formality . Adults on a Virgin Voyages’ Caribbean cruise can expect an anything goes attitude, where you can dance outdoors under the stars alongside mermaids and mermen during a themed party, when not attending beach bashes on shore. By day, work up a sweat in an ’80s-style dance aerobics class or get a tattoo or piercing from one of the visiting artists in the onboard parlor. At night, play drinking games while eating at the Korean barbecue venue or enjoy a first-rate molecular dining experience with items that pop or smoke (all meals are complimentary). Embrace the detox/retox ethos onboard with time spent in the gym and spa when not partying. Big spenders might opt for a RockStar suite, where they can entertain guests when not taking a peek-a-boo shower with wide-open views of the sea. There’s a do-good aspect, too—with sustainable products such as upcycled ocean plastic sunglasses and reef-safe sunscreen available in the shops.

Ahoy there! Windstar Cruises sailing ships make passengers feel like they are traveling back to a simpler era on the seas.
Courtesy of Jeff Zaruba/Windstar Cruises
Windstar’s Beach Fun & Sun cruise
- Best for: sailing ship experience
- To book: 7-night Beach Fun & Sun: A Remote Caribbean Getaway cruise from St. Maarten, from $3,222 per person
- Islands: In the BVI, Tortola (Soper’s Hole), Jost Van Dyke (overnight) and Virgin Gorda; Anguilla, St. Bart’s, Antigua
For an under-the-billowing-sails experience, it’s hard to top the 342-passenger Wind Surf , the largest sailing ship in the world, with sails that unfurl with the push of a computerized button (or two). You might feel like a pirate navigating the high seas on this Windstar vessel, but you can also hit the top-flight spa for an extravagant massage (indoors or open-air) and dine on excellent cuisine including fresh fish and Caribbean-influenced fare, from the official cruise line of the James Beard Foundation. There are kayaks and other water sports toys to borrow from the marina and the opportunity to walk barefoot in the sand at laid-back ports. Some of the main perks include a pampering crew and a convivial yacht club atmosphere, with live music and dancing out on deck, which are just icing on the cake.
