The iconic high-rise skylines of Dubai and Abu Dhabi, rimming long sandy shorelines, have made the United Arab Emirates a popular destination for anyone wanting to mix a city break with some beach time.

Landmark tourist attractions, such as Dubai's towering Burj Khalifa and Abu Dhabi's Sheikh Zayed Mosque and Louvre museum offer sightseeing within easy reach of the city sand.

A host of massive malls have made both cities renowned among shoppers as the best places to visit, and both offer vacationing families plenty of purely fun things to do, with an impressive list of major theme parks.

There's more to the UAE than the contemporary glitz of its two major cities, though.

The country's interior of desert and Hajar Mountains are all about big-sky scenery and adventure activities, from 4WD trips across a landscape of rippling dunes to taking on the world's longest zipline over the jagged contours of Jebel Jais.

There's also much more history here than those modern skyscrapers would have you believe. Sharjah and Al Ain are two cities dedicated to promoting Emirati heritage.

For many visitors, a UAE vacation centers around the beach.

Late October to May, while temperatures plummet over Europe and North America, is high season here as the UAE's punishing summer heat gives way to winter's beach weather.

Dubai and Abu Dhabi are the more obvious beach choices, offering city sightseeing, shopping, and theme parks in easy reach of the sand.

For sun-and-sand vacations in Dubai, luxury resorts are focused along the coast west of the central city. In particular, the beaches around Jumeirah and Dubai Marina offer plenty of family-oriented, five star resorts dedicated to beach time.

Abu Dhabi's luxury resorts rim the shoreline of the city's various islands, so resort areas are more scattered across the city than in Dubai. Saadiyat Island, Marina Breakwater, and Khor Al Maqta are the areas offering some of the best beach-focused resorts in town.

Abu Dhabi's Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is a mammoth modern mosque of incredible beauty.

Fusing contemporary design with traditional craftsmanship, the mosque harmoniously blends modern and ancient styles and techniques to create a new interpretation of Islamic architecture.

Both its exterior and interior utilize lavish amounts of gold, mosaic tiles, and glasswork to decorate the mosque's white marble stonework, while the architecture itself blends the various mosque designs of multiple Islamic empires.

Inside, the prayer hall is laid with the world's largest hand-knotted carpet (5,700 square meters) and illuminated by chandeliers made from 24-karat gold and crystals. While outside, the vast marble courtyard incorporates a mammoth swirling floral floor mosaic of semi-precious stones.

The highest peak in the United Arab Emirates, Jebel Jais in the emirate of Ras Al-Khaimah is a major activity center.

You could come here simply to admire the vista of rugged Hajar Mountain peaks rippling down to the coastline plateau from the viewing platform terrace near the summit, or you can choose to match those views with some adventure activities.

The most popular mountain experience here is the Jebel Jais Flight, the world's longest zipline, which runs down the side of the peak for over two kilometers, reaching speeds of up to 120 kilometers per hour.

For less speed thrills and more mountain time, Jebel Jais's Via Ferrata climbing route offers guided tours during the cooler months, while independent hikers can choose from six marked trails on the lower reaches of the mountain.

The newest and most spectacular museum in the United Arab Emirates, the Louvre Abu Dhabi takes visitors on a journey through human history.

For those with an adventurous streak, make a beeline for the UAE's desert reaches that stretch across the country's southern interior.

There are plenty of adventure activities on offer, from 4WD trips across the desert dunes to camel trekking, sandboarding, and dune buggy trips.

Popular desert day trips from Dubai or Abu Dhabi usually include dinner at a desert camp after a 4WD journey into the dunes, and offer time at camp for other activities such as sandboarding or short camel rides.

Other desert tours allow more scope for wildlife spotting and specialized desert operators also offer overnight camping amid the dunes.

The desert interiors of the emirates of Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Ras Al-Khaimah are also home to a number of luxury desert resorts, where stays are all about soaking up the dune scenery and heading out on desert activities.

The Al Fahidi quater of Dubai (also known as Bastakia) is the last remaining fragment of Old Dubai and shouldn't be missed. This small heritage area really evokes the simpler, gentler past of the city before skyscrapers took over the skyline.

The narrow lanes within the neighborhood are lined with carefully restored traditional buildings in typical Arabian architectural styles, many with the wind tower features, which kept houses cool before air-conditioning became common.

Many of the buildings now house small museums, art galleries, and craft shops, allowing you to enter the houses and see typical Arabian interiors.

The Sheikh Mohammed Center for Cultural Understanding is also based within the quarter and offers walking tours focused on the Al Fahidi quarter along with on-site traditional meals for visitors who want to experience local culinary heritage.

Sharjah Art Museum is home to one of the world's most renowned collections of work by Arab artists and art hailing from the Middle East.

Its permanent collection includes both pieces by the biggest names in contemporary Arab art from throughout the 20th century to the present, displayed in the Barjeel Collection Wing, and art from the 18th and 19th century created by both Arab artists and the European artists who focused on the Middle East in their work.

The museum is noted for its program of temporary exhibitions, which bring exhibits from both prominent and up-and-coming artists to the museum's lower floor galleries throughout the year.

Jebel Hafeet, on the edge of the oasis city of Al Ain is one of the most popular destinations for a quick and easy nature break out of Abu Dhabi city.

The cool mountain air on the summit also offers a respite from the coastal heat during summer.

This is the second highest peak in the United Arab Emirates, and far-reaching, sumptuous panoramas across the mountain's reaches and down to Al Ain greet you all the way up to the top on the winding road.

At the top of the twisting switchback mountain road, you are rewarded with being able to see across the area's vast sweep of desert stretching out in all directions.

The Burj Khalifa may give you that famous skyline view from up high, but the most iconic Dubai views are still taken from the water.

Dubai Creek slices through the city, and the best way to experience Dubai is from one of the beautiful dhows (traditional Arabic boats) that ply the creek.

Sunset cruises (which often come with entertainment and dinner) are particularly popular among visitors, as you get to watch the lights of the high-rises begin to twinkle in the dusk.

For a budget cruise, though, just hop on one of the ablas (local ferries), which ply the water between Bur Dubai and Deira.

The Hajar Mountains scythe through the northern interior of the UAE.

For nature lovers, the wadis (dry riverbeds or valleys) hidden within this region are prime territory for hiking, climbing, and bird-watching. Specialized adventure tour companies in Dubai and Ras Al-Khaimah offer wadi tours focused on these activities.

The Hajar Mountains are also great for road trips simply to take in the scenery of rolling, barren mountains.

Some of the tiny Hajar Mountain villages in the emirates of Ras Al-Khaimah and Fujairah are topped by historic watchtowers and small forts, which make good stop-offs along the way.

One of the most popular Hajar Mountain bases is the town of Hatta, which has become a major activity center in recent years, with kayaking on Hatta Lake and mountain biking in the surrounding area.

Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo is one of the city's best family experiences but also offers plenty of activities and things to do for the more adventurous.

The 48-meter-long Aquarium Tunnel, with 190-degree views into the aquarium, featuring over 300 sharks and rays among the 140 species living here, is a fascinating step into the underwater world.

But as well as the Aquarium Tunnel, there are opportunities to visit a penguin enclosure, a crocodile enclosure, and to witness the daily shark and ray feeding times.

For the more adventurous, Dubai Aquarium offers a variety of scuba diving experiences, including shark diving.

For many visitors to the United Arab Emirates, shopping is one of the main attractions.

There are megalithic, glitzy malls by the dozen, but for a more local approach to shopping jaunts, you can't beat the souks (bazaars) .

In Dubai, the Deira and Bur Dubai districts, facing each other across Dubai Creek, are where you head for traditional shopping, with the Bur Dubai Souk, the city's famed Gold Souk, and the Spice Souk all here.

In Sharjah, the Central Souk is one of the city's landmark buildings, while nearby Souk Al Jubail is a foodie traveler favorite destination.

Abu Dhabi has also got its souk areas. The most popular is the modern World Trade Center Souk, designed by architect Norman Foster, with its shops and stalls selling handicrafts from across the Arab world.

The Hajar Mountain village of Hatta is a prime base for travelers who want to experience a slice of the UAE's Hajar Mountain scenery.

While the coast swelters in summer, temperatures here in the mountains, although still hot, tend to be dry rather than humid, making Hatta a popular weekend getaway for Dubai locals.

The turquoise waters of the vast Hatta Dam, surrounded by jagged mountain slopes, is the main tourist attraction, and many people are here chiefly to kayak or boat on the lake.

If you're looking for more activities, Hatta is home to several hiking and mountain biking trails across the surrounding mountain wadis and slopes, many with phenomenal Hajar Mountain vistas along the way. Due to this, it's become a top destination in the UAE for adventure travel and nature-based journeys.

There's also horse riding amid the Hajar foothills and, if you want bird's-eye views of Hatta's mountain scenery, tandem-paragliding.

For the ultimate aerial views on your UAE trip, take to the skies for a tandem sky dive.

Tandem sky diving experiences are offered at two very different locations in Dubai:

Either opt for the city site , where sky divers take in vistas over the Dubai coastline with bird's-eye panoramas of the Palm Jumeirah island complex below, or head out to the desert site for views of undulating desert dunes and arid plateau as you descend.

Whichever you choose, both experiences provide one of the most thrilling sightseeing opportunities in the country.

Sky diving is available throughout the year at the city site, and the desert site closes during the summer months. Be aware, though, that sky diving is a weather-dependent activity, so it can be called off due to wind and visibility issues. If this happens, you will be offered either a full refund or a rescheduled spot.

The old caravan route stop-off of Al Ain, with its sprawling date palm oasis, is today a favorite getaway destination from Abu Dhabi.

For families, the major attractions are Al Ain's vast zoo, acclaimed for its conservation work and home to a safari-style experience, and the Wadi Adventure water park , with its white water rafting facility, as well as a bundle of more typical water park rides.

Once home to the ruling Al Nayyan family, Al Ain is also one of the UAE's most important historic destinations, with the Al Jahili Fort, Al Ain Palace Museum, and Qasr Al Muwaiji, all well-preserved remnants from the era before the oil boom.

To peek into the deeper past, the 5,000-year-old Umm Al Nar tombs at Al Ain's Hili Archaeological Park are one of the country's UNESCO World Heritage sites .

Sharjah's Museum of Islamic Civilization is the only museum in the country to focus on the breadth of Islamic history.

The collection inside traces Islam's course from the very early years to the spread of the Islamic empires through Asia and Africa, and explores the vast diversity of culture and art throughout the Islamic world.

As well as a wealth of artifacts and art objects, certain displays focus on separate facets of the Islamic faith and specific eras in Islam's history. Some displays feature rare manuscripts and religious documents, and tourists will find them easy to understand thanks to excellent information boards throughout.

Even though Abu Dhabi and Dubai are the two largest Emirates making up more than 90% of the UAE, there are still five other Emirates you can visit.

What to do in UAE

One thing that really bugs me is when people say “I don’t see the point of visiting the UAE, there’s nothing to do there…”

Well, on my first day there I wandered around the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque (arguably my favourite mosque in the world), took in Picasso, Pollock and other world-class artists at the Louvre, acted like a big kid and went on all the rides at Warner Bros World before coming back to my hotel for a relaxing massage and an amazing dinner.

Nothing to do there? That was just one day in Abu Dhabi, let along the rest of the UAE!

Let me say this now, the UAE is an incredible place for your holiday. It really does have a little bit of everything (including an indoor ski centre in Dubai!)

So, if you’re thinking of exploring this part of the Middle East, here’s where I recommend what to do in UAE.

Abu Dhabi is the largest Emirate in UAE and it is the official capital too.

It is a city full of superlatives – it is home to the world’s largest hand-woven carpet, the world’s heaviest chandelier, the world’s fastest rollercoaster, the tower with the greatest lean. This is a place that certainly doesn’t mind breaking world records!

I’ve been to Abu Dhabi a couple of times now and I really like it there. The mixture of amazing architecture and high-adrenaline adventure activities in the UAE make it the perfect place to start your trip.

Marvel at the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

I think the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is my favourite mosque in the world.

Even though this place is relatively new (it first opened in 2007), it has become a shining light for Abu Dhabi.

The mosque is completely free to enter (men must wear trousers, women must be covered) and is open from 9am till 10pm.

This is where you’ll find the world’s largest handwoven carpet (with a mammoth 2.6 billion knots) and the world’s heaviest chandelier weighing in at 12 tons. For me, this is one of the top places to visit in Abu Dhabi.

Take in the amazing architecture at The Louvre

The Louvre opened its doors in 2017 and it is the sister museum to the one in Paris.

Much like the one in Paris, the Louvre houses some incredible pieces of art from antiquity all the way to the modern day.

However, the building itself is like one giant display showcasing the amazing architecture in Abu Dhabi.

Outside it looks like a futuristic spaceship, but once you get to the main hall it really opens up into this stunning space that blends sharp edges with reflective water features. Just stunning.

Be a big kid again at WB World

This is another place that’s just opened up in Abu Dhabi and is one of the best tourist attractions in UAE.

Opposite Ferrari World (which is home to the world’s fastest rollercoaster), WB World Abu Dhabi is a bit more sedate. Saying that, there are some fantastic rides here and its fun for all ages.

Being a comic book fan, I really enjoyed ‘Gotham City’ which was home to the Batman and Riddler rides, but I also enjoyed ‘Bedrock’ with the Flintstones ride.

Also, WB World is all indoors so this is a great place to head when it gets too hot outside. WB World is one of the new places to visit in UAE and it’s perfect for families too.

Spot dolphins at the Saadiyat Rotana Resort & Villas

Yes, you really can see dolphins in the UAE!

While I was staying at the Saadiyat Rotana Resort & Villas, I went for an early morning walk along the beach and I was lucky enough to see dolphins backflipping right in front of my face.

They were literally 10 metres away from me just off the beach and they were putting on quite the show.

This really was one of the highlights of my trip to the UAE – hopefully you’ll see dolphins too. If not, you can always go for a swim!

Where to stay in Abu Dhabi – Saadiyat Rotana Resort & Villas

Even though Ajman is the smallest of the seven emirates, it packs a big punch.

The beaches are beautiful here with hardly anyone on them, especially compared to those of Dubai. Also, the Corniche is a really popular place where locals like to bbq and have a picnic. Ajman is one of the most historic places in the UAE and it still has a number of customs and traditions there.

Learn about the pearl diving industry

Before the oil boom, pearl diving used to be one of the biggest industries in the UAE.

As the name suggests, this is where people used to dive for oysters to see if they had a valuable pearl inside them. Expeditions used to take weeks, and if a boat came back with a few pearls it was considered a success.

These days the pearl diving industry has changed and the best way of learning about it all is aboard the Ajman Pearl .

This is a tour that takes you around the mangroves of Ajman where you learn all about the history of pearls and how they’re grown.

Not only that, you also have the chance of opening up an oyster to see if there’s a pearl inside. If there is, you get to keep it!

When we cracked one open, nestled under the flesh of the oyster was the biggest pearl I’ve ever seen. I know it sounds set up but the pearl genuinely came from the oyster! No tricks or anything.

If you’re on your honeymoon or are on a romantic holiday then I’d really recommend this activity.

Enjoy lunch by the beach

This is one of the top things to do in Ajman. As I said, the beaches here are absolutely beautiful without any of the people.

While I was travelling in the UAE, we stopped off at the beach in Ajman for lunch and it was bliss. There was only one other family around, otherwise we had the beach to ourselves.

There are several beach huts you can sit in to avoid the sun (it was a tepid 38 degrees when I was there) and it’s very relaxed compared to the hustle and bustle of city life.

Dubai . It is a city that has it all.

From towering skyscrapers to crazy malls with ice rinks in them to beautiful beaches (often with a camel or two walking by!), there really is something for everyone in Dubai.

I’ve been to Dubai a couple of times now and it’s hard not to like the energy of the city. There’s always something going on at a million miles an hour and I love the fast-paced life there – it reminds me a little bit of London in that sense, just very hot!

With that in mind, here are some of the best things to do in Dubai.

Museum of Illusion

The Museum of Illusion in Dubai has just opened up in the summer of 2018 making it one of the newest places to visit in the UAE.

From mind-bending illusions to looking like a giant, this is good ol’ fashioned family fun. I can imagine it’s the perfect place to bring the kids.

They really encourage taking photos here and the staff even took a few so make sure you bring your camera along. Oh, and your sense of humour too!

Eat at Teatro in Towers Rotana

One of the places everyone said we had to eat at was Teatro in Towers Rotana . This is constantly ranked as one of the best restaurants in Dubai and it certainly did not disappoint!

The food is a fusion of east meets west so expect to find things on the menu like wasabi tempura prawns and miso-glazed seabass.

We had the sushi platter and it was delicious. Very authentic with their own sushi master and it was incredibly pretty too. It was food that looked good and tasted even better.

If you’re looking for an amazing place for dinner in Dubai then I’d really recommend Teatro.

Explore Dubai Creek on an abra boat

Here’s a little money saving tip for you. Abra boats are cheapest way of getting around Dubai with a one-way ticket costing just 20p.

Not only are they a cheap way of getting around, they are also great for seeing the city from the water. Also, this is such a traditional mode of transport that it feels very nostalgic too.

The best place to get an abra is near the Old Quarter and on Dubai Creek . The boats are very regular every 10 minutes and some leave before if they’re full. This really is such a good way of sightseeing Dubai!

Take in the skyline from Al Bandar Rotana

I’ll put my hand up right now and say I’m a sucker for a good skyline. Well, in Dubai they have one the world’s best.

I could spend all day roaming around Dubai in search of the best photo spots, but one of my favs is at the top of the Al Bandar Rotana.

Up on the 18 th floor you can grab a cocktail from Gusto Restaurant , sit on the terrace and watch the sunset. Or, if you’re like me, you can take photos of the sunset! Still, this really is one of the best views of Dubai.

Where to stay in Dubai – Al Bandar Rotana or the Towers Rotana Dubai

If you’re wondering where to go in UAE, let me introduce you to Fujairah. At times this place feels like it’s a million miles away from the other Emirates.

Not only do you get gorgeous beaches here, but you also get the Hajar Mountains in the background giving this an otherworldly feel. It wasn’t the Luna landscape of the Atacama Desert in Chile but it wasn’t far off!

If you’re looking for a place to really kick back and relax then there are a number of 5* resorts here.

Also, if diving and snorkeling are your thing then this is where you’ll find it in the UAE.

Here are some of the best tourist places in Fujairah.

Go snorkeling at Snoopy Island

The main place to go snorkeling in Fujairah is Snoopy Island.

This was a short 10-minute boat ride along the coast from where I was staying at the Fujairah Rotana Resort & Spa and it’s a really good snorkeling spot.

Snoopy Island is a large rock protruding from the sea and there’s a small reef surrounding this teeming with life.

Unfortunately we didn’t see any turtles but they are really common in the area. But we did see lots of other little fishes and it was a great way to spend an afternoon.

Take in the landscape while parasailing

I always love parasailing wherever I am around the world – it always reminds me of family holidays when I was younger.

So, when I saw you could go parasailing at Fujairah I signed up immediately. It was definitely one of my favourite things to do in the UAE .

One of the best things about going parasailing in Fujairah is the landscapes. You really get to see the Hajar Mountains from high up with the bright blue water glistening below. So much fun!

Ras Al Khaimah

Ras Al Khaimah is quickly establishing itself as the adventure capital of the UAE. For me, this is up there with the best places in UAE so make sure you add it to your list.

Not only are there activities like jet skiing along the coast and hiking up in the Jebel Jais Mountains, but it is also home to the world’s longest zipline! This is an adventure activity like no other and it is such a rush.

Ras Al Khaimah is also home to a few all-inclusive resorts (bet you didn’t think you’d find them in the UAE!) That means if you’re looking for a proper holiday by the beach and the by the pool then you can’t go wrong with RAK. And yes, you can drink alcohol here. I told you it was surprising!

Ras Al Khaimah is one of the best places to visit from Dubai for people looking for a more relaxed state and a lazier beach holiday.

Take on the world’s longest zipline

Obviously I love my adventure activities and they don’t come much better than this.

So, how long is the world’s longest zipline? It’s 2.8kms where you reach speeds of up to 160kph and it is an adrenaline-pumping 2 minutes flying through the mountains of Jebel Jais.

You fly in the superman position facing forward, and once you reach terminal velocity it’s actually quite relaxing (I really mean that!) Also, it’s a great way to take in the beautiful scenery of the mountains too.

You can book tickets with ToroVerde Ras al Khaimah . We arrived on the day so you don’t need to book in advanced if you don’t want to. This is definitely one of the best new places to visit in UAE that’s for sure!

Enjoy beautiful sunsets at The Cove Rotana Resort

One of the best places you can stay in Ras Al Khaimah is The Cove Rotana Resort .

This is an all-inclusive resort that looks a little like the Santorini of the UAE.

The Cove Rotana Resort is based right on the beach and it has uninterrupted views of the sunset. This really is the best place to watch sunset in the United Arab Emirates.

Also, there’s a little beach bar right on the beach meaning this is the perfect place to be for those sundowner cocktails before a delicious dinner! What I would give to be back on the beach right now…

Exploring the coastline on a jet ski

Jet skiing is another one of those classic beach holiday activities that I love.

While I was staying at The Cove Rotana Resort I picked up a jet ski for the morning and zoomed along the coast.

Every time I go jet skiing these days it’s with my girlfriend on the back and she hates it when I go fast. From the sound of her screams I always push it too far but what can I say, it’s so much fun!

Where to stay in Ras Al Khaimah – The Cove Rotana Resort

Sharjah is seen as the most traditional and cultural of the emirates. This is the only one where drinking alcohol is strictly prohibited, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have fun here.

UNESCO declared Sharjah as the Cultural Capital of the Arab World in 1998, recognition reaffirmed in 2014 when it became Capital of Islamic Culture, so there’s plenty to see here.

Also, the skyline down by Khalid Lake is among the best you’ll find in the UAE.

When it comes to what to do in the UAE, I really recommend adding Sharjah to the list. It really is very different from the other emirates!

Drink traditional Arabic coffee

If you’ve never had Arabic coffee before then you’ve got to give this a go.

Arabic coffee is very aromatic and is often spiced with cardamom. Unlike other coffee, it is actually a greeny golden colour and is very bitter to drink.

Most of the time coffee is offered to guests when they arrive somewhere new and traditionally it is drunk for a small cup.

A word of warning – if you don’t shake your cup after you’ve finished it then your host will keep on filling it up until you do! Shaking your cup is a sign you don’t want any more coffee and we learned this during a traditional coffee ceremony when we arrived at Centro Sharjah .

Go for a sunset cruise on an abra boat

One of the best places to visit in the UAE is Khalid Lake.

Not only do you get the gorgeous skyline glittering in the water, but you also get to see the old and the new blended together with Al Noor Mosque nestled between the skyscrapers.

By Al Majaz Park there is a boat jetty where you can hire an abra boat to go on a little cruise of the lake.

We came down here at sunset and it was just beautiful – definitely the perfect time of day to see Sharjah and it was a little cooler too.

Umm Al Quwain

If you’re wondering where to go in the UAE then take a look at Umm Al Quwain!

Umm Al Quwain is a tiny emirate wrapped around an island dotted lagoon and it’s really beautiful here.

This place has a bit of a retro feel to it as there aren’t any big international resorts or megamalls like you’ll find in Dubai, but because of that it has a distinct charm.

Across the creek, uninhabited Al Sinniyah Island is a protected marine environment noted for its mangrove swamp and large colony of Socotra cormorants. We also saw flamingos here too which was a nice added bonus!

Go kayaking through the mangroves

One of the best ways of seeing the mangroves up close is in a kayak.

Even though I didn’t see any turtles while kayaking in Um Al Quwain, it is very common to see them in the area. However, I did see flamingos though which was a huge surprise. I never thought there were flamingos in the UAE but I was completely wrong about that.

I went kayaking from UAQ Marine Club which is like an adventure club with loads of activities to choose from. Best thing about this is they’ve got a pool so you can go for a relaxing dip after kayaking.

Hiring a kayak is fairly cheap (100AED, £20) and I’d really recommend this to anyone passing through Um Al Quwain.

My trip to the UAE was in association with Rotana Hotels promoting some of their best hotels in the region. As always, views are entirely my own and without bias.

If you're planning to visit Dubai, you'll find a stirring mix of profound traditions and futuristic vision wrapped into starkly evocative desert splendour.

You won't be short of things to do in the sci-fi-esque land of iconic skyscrapers, palm-shaped islands, city-sized malls and palatial beach resorts. Dubai embraces sunshine, innovation and cultural dynamism, and is known as a shopping haven with a vibrant nightlife and entertainment scene. Here are some great things to do to make the most from your trip.

Burj Khalifa

Dubai is famous for its dramatic skyscrapers, and above them all looms the Burj Khalifa , shaped like a deep-space rocket and, at 828m, the world's tallest building. It's a stunning feat of architecture and engineering, and a trip to the observation deck on the 124th floor (1483ft) is the most popular way to take in the amazing views it offers. You can also buy tickets for "At the Top Sky" on the 148th floor, which is the world's highest outdoor observation deck at 1820ft.

Clad in 28,000 glass panels, the Burj Khalifa also lays claim to several more superlatives, including the highest occupied floor and an elevator with the longest travel distance. On hazy days, it’s better to visit at night.

Al Fahidi Historic District

Wandering around this restored heritage area in Bur Dubai provides a tangible sense of historic Middle Eastern architecture and culture. Low-lying traditional courtyard buildings flank this quiet labyrinth of lanes in Al Fahidi Historic District , many of them featuring arabesque windows, decorative gypsum screens and wind towers.

Some contain craft shops, small heritage museums, art galleries, artsy guesthouses or cafés serving local fare, including Middle Eastern breakfasts and camel milk smoothies. The Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding leads guided tours of the quarter.

Dubai Miracle Garden

Covering some 2000 sq metres and touted as the largest natural flower garden in the world, there’s a sense of Alice in Wonderland–esque surrealism when entering Dubai Miracle Garden . Wander past quirky bloom-covered peacocks, clocks and castles, or alternatively, chill out in a cabana with billowing drapes and floor cushions.

Home to 100 million flowers, and adjacent to the enormous nine-dome Dubai Butterfly Garden, it is incredibly popular, attracting 55,000 visitors a week. There are food outlets on site as well as a souvenir shop and small trampoline park.

Shop 'til you drop

Shopping malls represent an integral part of the culture and lifestyle in Dubai. Not merely places for maxing out your credit cards on fashion, electronics or gourmet foods, malls are also where locals go to socialize in cafés and restaurants, to catch a movie in a state-of-the-art multiplex or to get adrenaline kicks in an indoor theme park or game arcade. The best and biggest of the bunch is Dubai Mall, which features not only 1300 stores but also a giant aquarium, an indoor ice rink and a genuine dinosaur skeleton.

Serious shoppers can check out the Dubai Shopping Festival, which lures bargain-hunters from around the world. It takes place in January each year, and there are huge discounts in the souqs and malls. The city is abuzz with activities during the festival, ranging from live concerts to fashion shows and nightly fireworks.

Mushrif National Park

One of the oldest parks in Dubai, Mushrif National Park covers more than 5 sq km of natural ghaf forest. Mushrif is located around 15km east of the city centre, and is a haven for birds, including owls, Orphean warblers, hoopoes and black redstarts. Dating from 1974, the park has plenty of manmade attractions as well, including walking trails and bicycle tracks, a large children's playground, a swimming pool and barbecue pits.

Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve

On the outskirts of Sharjah , the 225 sq km Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve accounts for 5% of the Emirate of Dubai's total land. The reserve was established in 1999 and has been involved in projects to reintroduce mountain gazelles, sand gazelles and Arabian oryx.

It's possible to stay inside the reserve at Al Maha Desert Resort & Spa , which was designed for superluxe ecotourism. The reserve is divided into four zones, the third of which is only open to resort guests and the fourth to a small number of desert tour operators, including Arabian Adventures , offering a less costly admission than overnighting at the resort.

IMG Worlds of Adventure

In 2016, Dubai added four theme parks to its stable of attractions, including IMG Worlds of Adventure , the world's largest indoor theme park. Housed in an air-conditioned hangar the size of 28 football fields, the park is truly impressive, with more than 20 rides and attractions split across four themed zones – Marvel, Cartoon Network, Lost Valley Dinosaur Adventure and IMG Boulevard. You won't go hungry as there are 28 dining outlets to choose from.

Etihad Museum

Opened in 2017, the striking Etihad Museum engagingly chronicles the birth of the United Arab Emirates in 1971, spurred by the discovery of oil in the 1950s and the withdrawal of the British in 1968.

Documentary films, photographs, artifacts, timelines and interactive displays zero in on historic milestones in the years leading up to and immediately following this momentous occasion, and they pay homage to the country's seven founding fathers. Free tours of the adjacent circular Union House are available, which is where the historic signing of the Constitution of the United Arab Emirates took place.

For a dose of Arabian Nights flair, head to Dubai's historic core and plunge headlong into its charmingly chaotic warren of markets. The famed headliner is the dazzling Gold Souq . Even if you don't have a thing for bling, a walk through here will feel like you've entered a giant Aladdin's Cave. It's fun to just watch the action, especially in the evening. If you're buying, sharpen your haggling skills, no matter whether shopping for teensy earrings, an engagement ring or a dowry-worthy necklace.

White Dubai

Dazzling rooftop bars, chill beachfront lounges, classic pubs, cool karaoke joints, speakeasy-style nightclubs, live-music venues – with such variety, finding a party location to suit your mood is hardly a tall order in Dubai. One of the biggest draws for nocturnal action is White Dubai. The mega-venue with its impressive light and sound systems sits smack dab on top of the grandstand of the Meydan Racecourse.

Desert escapes

The Arabian desert, with its weathered mountains, undulating sand dunes and wide open spaces, exudes a special mystique that can easily be savored on a day trip from urbanized Dubai. There are numerous tour operators to set you up with everything from camel treks to sandboarding or overnight safaris. The best ones offer an authentic look at local culture through encounters with Bedouins and traditional meals. Alternatively, consider hiring a 4WD and staying at a desert resort, so you can appreciate the magnificent scenery on your own schedule.

Dubai Museum

Housed in Bur Dubai's Al Fahidi Fort, the city's oldest surviving structure, Dubai Museum, provides a well-laid-out introduction to the history of the emirate. Marvel at its turbo-evolution from simple desert settlement to futuristic metropolis in just a third of a century. Dioramas recreate traditional scenes in a market, at home and in the mosque, while other galleries focus on life at sea and in the desert. An archaeological exhibition illustrates the ancient history of the region with a display of items unearthed during excavations at local digs.

Dubai Design District

This hub for creatives lures visitors with its edgy architecture, contemporary restaurants, public art, galleries and calendar of cultural events. Visitors to Dubai Design District can tap into this laboratory of tastemakers by browsing showrooms and pop-ups, eavesdropping on bearded hipsters in sleek cafés, checking out art exhibits in building lobbies, or attending free screenings and workshops. The week-long Dubai Design Week is held there in November, with an extensive offering of talks, workshops, masterclasses and kids' activities.

Dubai Butterfly Garden

If you want to deepen your knowledge of these pretty flying insects, pop into the Dubai Butterfly Museum , located next to the Dubai Miracle Garden. Some 15,000 butterflies flutter around nine indoor domed gardens, and you can see for yourself how they begin as caterpillars and evolve into their flying adaptations. Don’t miss the Butterfly and Insect Museum, which features in-depth analysis and information about thousands of colorful butterfly species from around the world.

Museum of Illusions

It opened in 2018 and the Museum of Illusions in the Al Seef district is fast becoming a favorite for families and Instagram fans. Kids will love the 150-plus illusions, including the rooms of mirrors, distorted perspective and various other optical illusions, while parents can take memorably wacky photos. Avoid visiting at weekends if possible, as visitors are restricted by number and you may have to wait your turn.

Jumeirah Mosque

Snowy white and intricately detailed, Jumeirah is Dubai's most beautiful mosque and one of only a handful in the United Arab Emirates open to non-Muslims. It's particularly beautiful at dusk and visitors are allowed in six days a week. One-hour guided tours are operated by the Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding , and while modest dress is preferred, traditional clothing can be borrowed for free.

Dubai Fountain

The dancing Dubai Fountain is spectacularly set in the middle of a giant lake against the backdrop of the glittering Burj Khalifa. Water undulates as gracefully as a belly dancer, arcs like a dolphin and surges as high as 140m, all synced to stirring classical, Arabic and world music soundtracks played on speakers. There are plenty of great vantage points, including a 272m-long floating boardwalk, which takes you just 9m away from the fountain.

Other good viewing spots include some of the restaurants at Souk Al Bahar , the bridge linking Souk Al Bahar with Dubai Mall, the Dubai Mall waterfront terrace, or aboard a 25-minute Dubai Fountain Lake Ride on a traditional wooden abra boat.

Emirates Airline Festival of Literature

The long-running annual Emirates Airline Festival of Literature brings authors and thousands of book fans together to celebrate all things reading and writing. Held over nine days in March, the festival hosts talks, discussions, panels and a special program just for children, with many activities free to attend. It offers attendees a chance to meet local and world-famous authors, attend literary debates and workshops, participate in competitions and be inspired by their literary heroes.

Global Village

The carnival-like Global Village is a bit like a ‘world fair’ for shoppers, and you'll find it on Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road (E311). Each of the 30-something pavilions showcases a specific nation’s culture and products. Aside from shopping, there's also lots of entertainment – from Chinese opera to Turkish whirling dervishes – as well as a funfair with dozens of rides from tame to terrifying.

Burj Al Arab

This landmark luxe hotel, with its dramatic design that mimics the billowing sail of a ship, floats on its own artificial island and has become the iconic symbol of Dubai’s boom years. The Burj Al Arab's interior is all about impact, drama and unapologetic bling, with dancing fountains, gold fittings, shiny marble and whirlpool baths your butler can fill with champagne if you so wish. If a stay exceeds your budget, you can still partake in the opulence by making reservations for cocktails, afternoon tea or dinner in the underwater restaurant.

Dubai Frame

Opened in January 2018, this 150m rectangular 'picture frame' sits in Zabeel Park , right between historic and modern Dubai, and provides grand views of both parts of the city. Galleries on the ground floor of Dubai Frame tell the story of Dubai (the past) before visitors are whisked up to a viewing platform at roof level (the present). The final stop is another gallery depicting a vision of Dubai 50 years from now (the future).

Al Qudra Lake

One for the nature lovers, Al Qudra Lake is a series of man-made lakes set amidst the rolling dunes of the Saih Al Salam desert on Dubai’s southern outskirts. Part of the Al Marmoom Desert Conservation Reserve, the surrounding area is unspoiled. Swap skyscrapers for wide open dunes and oasis-like pools where you can spot plenty of free-roaming wildlife, more than 100 species of birds and several desert plants.

This long, pristine stretch of white sand, off Jumeirah Road and next to a mosque, is superclean and has lots of activities, including kitesurfing, beach tennis, beach volleyball and kayaking. There are showers, wi-fi, toilets and changing facilities on Kite Beach , plus lots of food trucks and cafés. It offers great views of the Burj Al Arab, and gets very busy on Friday and Saturday when a seaside market with crafts and gifts sets up.

Perfume Museum

The waterfront Perfume Museum is part of the Al Shindagha Museum restoration project and is the former home of a Dubai sheikha who loved all things perfume. The old building has been restored and its interactive exhibits are based around scent, smells and fragrance. Keep your entry ticket and you’ll get free access to the nearby Dubai Creek House .

Steps from the Deira Old Souk abra station, the sound of Arabic chatter bounces around the lanes of this covered market. Dubai's famous Spice Souk is filled with intoxicating sights and smells. Its vendors work hard to unload cardamom, saffron and other aromatic herbs photogenically stored in burlap sacks alongside nuts, incense burners, henna kits, shishas and dried limes. Away from the tourist-oriented main thoroughfare, tiny shops also sell groceries and other household goods.

Burj Khalifa

Standing 828m high, the  Burj Khalifa  is the tallest building in the world and one of Dubai's must-visit attractions. The majestic building is located in the heart of the city and is a hub of activity day and night. Just looking up in awe at the sheer scale of this magnificent structure is memorable in itself, but it's definitely worth venturing inside too. You can capture perfect views of the city from the  observation  deck at levels 124 and 125, or have a bite to eat in the  At The Top Sky Lounge . For special occasions, treat yourself to a sunset session at The Lounge, Burj Khalifa ,  the highest lounge in the world at 585m.

The Dubai Fountain

Located at the base of Burj Khalifa  is one of the world's largest choreographed fountain displays, where powerful jet streams soar as high as 150m in the air and sway in time to musical numbers. Stop by in the evening when displays begin at sundown and take place every 30 minutes, until the final song plays at 11pm. Diners can also sit back and enjoy the show at an array of restaurants at Dubai Mall  or Souk Al Bahar , both commanding prime positions near the fountain arena.

Palm Jumeirah

Palm Jumeirah is one of the largest manmade islands in the world and a triumph of human ingenuity. Locals and tourists alike flock to its vast array of high-end hotels – Waldorf Astoria, Fairmont, One&Only, Jumeirah Zabeel Saray  and, perhaps most notably, Atlantis, The Palm . Getting here is simple, thanks to the monorail running down the 'trunk', which connects to the mainland's tram system.

Since opening in 2018,  Dubai Frame  has become a cultural landmark that connects the Dubai's past with its present and represents a remarkable engineering feat.  Located within Dubai's famous Zabeel Park , this attraction lets you experience the transition between Old and New Dubai thanks to sweeping panoramic views of the city from 150m high. One of its striking features is the state-of-the-art clear glass bridge walkway, which connects parallel vertical towers so that, from the outside, the structure perfectly resembles a giant picture frame.

The aptly-named Kite Beach is the perfect place to test out your watersports skills , although there's plenty to do out of the water at this popular spot too. Grab a smoothie from one of the many open-air cafes and restaurants, watch bikers and skaters fly by at the skate park, or enjoy a game of volleyball with friends on the sand. With plenty of beach activities, plus an incredible view of Burj Al Arab  in the distance, you can easily spend a whole day here.

Dubai Water Canal

Dubai Water Canal is a 3.2-kilometre-long waterway extending from the Creek in Old Dubai  through Business Bay before finding its way to the Arabian Gulf. With 80,000sqm of public space and facilities and a 12km cycling path, the Canal has become a popular visitor attraction. There are also five pedestrian bridges that snake their way across the iconic waterway, so it's the perfect spot to stroll and take in classic views of the city at its best. Nearby is the Al Habtoor City  development, home to the thrilling  La Perle by Dragone  show, five-star hotels and an array of trendy restaurants.

This sprawling desert city is always adding notable cultural institutions , galleries, and design-focused shopping , all focused on luring in a new generation of visitors . If you prefer an adrenaline rush, though, there's always the thrill of sliding between the high floors of a glass skyscraper, or jumping into the world’s largest dive pool. Aura Skypool Arrow

Jumeirah Mosque Arrow

Deep Dive Dubai Arrow

This is the world's deepest pool with a depth of 60 meters. It boasts a sunken city for diving enthusiasts to explore and holds 14 million liters of water. Tailored entirely to water lovers, deep diving is for those with certifications only, while snorkeling on the surface and scuba-diving up to 12 meters can be undertaken by anyone over the age of 10. Given Deep Dive Dubai also acts as the region’s largest underwater film studio, packed with 56 cameras and the ability to create different moods, it is definitely a must-try experience. Tickets are required and can be pre-purchased or bought online.

Hatta Dome Park Arrow

Ideally positioned a walkable distance from the Hatta Wadi Hub, this is a desert glamping experience that immerses guests in nature, offering them dome-tented accommodation, incredible mountain views, and an abundance of outdoor activities at their doorsteps. Hatta is buzzing with nature lovers and active travelers seeking refuge from the city, and geared up to explore the mountain range. These luxe tents offer comfort and adventure in equal doses. Each has its own terrace, and there are fire pits, barbecues, and food vans just a short distance away. Al Marmoom Camel Race Track Arrow

A popular heritage destination, Al Marmoom draws camel racing enthusiasts of all stripes, local and otherwise. A day at the camel races is an experience that is nicely representative of Middle Eastern culture, one that dates back to the 7th century. The grandstands are often filled with camel owners, trainers, and handlers, and most seats offer good views of the action. Remember that races start early—between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m.—and that commentary and announcements are made in Arabic.

Ain Dubai Arrow

Officially the world's largest observation wheel, Ain Dubai is 75 meters taller than the London Eye. Towering over Bluewaters Island, the wheel affords sweeping views from 250 meters in the air. Not only is it visible from so many of Dubai's vantage points, this attraction appeals to just about everyone—schools, businesses, families, tourists, and locals alike. Rides on the structure are ticketed, with passes sold at the venue or online .

Dubai Spice Souk Arrow

Dubai's sprawling spice market is arguably the most entertaining of all the city's souks. It's bustling, with intoxicating sights and smells. Many of the vendors sell the same ingredients—Persian dried limes, saffron, barberries, rose hips, and traditional Middle Eastern spice mixes. Saffron, while still pricey, is more affordable here than elsewhere in Dubai. Part of a complex that features three Jumeirah hotels and an adjoining waterway, the souk has stalls selling everything from the spices, to handmade lanterns, clothes, souvenirs, and everything in between. There are also two-dozen restaurants, indoor and out, not to mention some of the most spectacular views of the world-famous Burj Al Arab hotel. It’s free to enter, but parking and abra-style water taxis cost extra.

The Dubai Fountain Arrow

The world's tallest fountain puts the ones in Vegas to shame. Multiple fountain shows are scheduled every day, shooting 22,000 gallons of water up 500 feet in the air within the 30-acre Burj Lake. Plus, a new floating viewing platform means you can get much closer to the action than before. Even better, it's free. If you visit the Dubai Mall , you'll likely see the fountains while you're there, so pause for a moment and enjoy the show.

Flying with Falcons by Balloon Adventures Dubai Arrow

In this private adventure experience, the only other person in your balloon is the pilot, who is an expert balloonist and falcon handler. Guests are picked up from their hotels and driven out into the desert. The aerial views of the desert are some of the most spectacular you'll see. Not only is the rolling landscape incredible but it is possible to see Oryx and camels strolling the desert below. This tour is ideal for a special occasion with a loved one or for those looking to experience the culture in a totally different way. Bookings are required.

Global Village Arrow

Dubai's massive Global Village is essentially a theme park for all ages, though it's popular with families as the rides and attractions are kid-friendly. Open Late-October to mid-April, it features concerts, rides, dining, and attractions from around the world. It's on the outskirts of Dubai, so don't think you can pack it into a city-centric day, but if you have time and are interested in some global shopping and entertainment, it's worth a visit.

Sky Views Dubai Arrow

High above Downtown Dubai, 219 meters up, Sky Views serves up a series of adrenaline-inducing one-of-a-kind experiences. Like so many of the experiences offered in Dubai, this incredible attraction is not for the faint of heart. Tread the 25-meter glass-bottom podium that connects the Address Sky View's twin 50-story dual towers; ride the outdoor glass slide; or tackle the Edge Walk, which is exactly as it sounds. Tickets are required but you can buy them online or at the venue.

Al Shindagha Museum: Perfume House Arrow

Positioned on the Dubai Creek within the recently renovated Al Shindagha neighborhood (once the traditional center of the emirate), the Perfume House offers the opportunity to travel back in time and discover the ages-old methods of Arabic perfume-making. You'll learn about the region’s perfume-trading route and explore the traditional oils and ingredients used to make local scents (including oud, saffron, and specific roses).

Kite Beach Arrow

Like a Miami beach with its wide stretch of sand, aquamarine water, beach chaises, and enough activities to make you feel like sunbathing isn't quite enough, Kite Beach is for beach lovers. Join a game of volleyball, give kite-surfing a try, or take a run around the soft running track—when it's not 106 degrees out.

Aquaventure Waterpark Arrow

Now considered the world’s largest waterpark thanks to its recent extension, the venue has expanded by a third. Trident Tower, its newest arm, features the largest kids-only waterparks in the Middle East—Splashers Lagoon and Splashers Cove. Aquaventure contains more than 30 slides and attractions, including the emirates' longest lazy river, some thrilling rides (including the Leap of Faith and Poseidon's Retreat), and a private beach. Legoland Dubai Arrow

Legos come to life at Legoland Dubai (sister to others across the world, including in Florida), where 60 interactive rides and 15,000 Lego models entrance the young and young-at-heart. Aimed at families with children between the ages of 2 and 12, the theme park was created from 60 million Legos and encompasses six lands, indoor and out. And now there is a Legoland Hotel that allows families to really immerse themselves in Lego for a weekend or overnight stay. In the heat of summer, the outdoor attractions can be a little too much to bear, but the indoor ones are just as good—and they're air-conditioned.

Skydive Dubai Arrow

If free-falling over Dubai at 120 miles per hour sounds like your idea of a good time, Skydive Dubai has you covered. Beginners are welcome to jump in tandem with the company's experienced guides, but licensed divers can take the plunge solo. A tandem flight from Skydive Dubai's location on The Palm costs nearly $600—but it's worth it if you're a thrill-seeker who's not afraid of heights.

The Dubai Mall Arrow

As the largest mall in the world, the Dubai Mall draws in almost 100 million visitors a year. It's easy to get lost—there are more than 1,200 shops, after all—but a great place to beat the Dubai heat and ogle at the luxury stores. The place draws in more tourists from around the world than both New York City and Los Angeles so it's safe to say, everyone comes here.

Fly belly-down across highways, skyscrapers, and swimming pools through the city of Dubai with XLine Dubai, one of the longest, steepest, and fastest urban zip lines in the world. From a height of 560 feet with speeds up to 50 miles per hour, riders soar from the Jumeirah Beach Residence to Dubai Marina, passing once-in-a-lifetime views along the way. Al Fahidi Historical Neighborhood Arrow

This quaint neighborhood offers a glimpse into what Dubai was like before the Emirates were formed in 1971. Traditional buildings crafted from stone, palm wood, gypsum, and teak line the twisted alleys and pathways—history and architecture buffs will love getting lost here. The neighborhood is a quiet retreat from the traffic and skyscrapers of the city, and the labyrinth of lanes make this place feel like you're in a secluded village.

Abra Ride Across Dubai Creek Arrow

Riding an abra, or traditional wooden boat, is one of the most low-key ways to get a feel for life in Dubai. The boats gather on either side of Dubai Creek—in Deira or Bur Dubai—and can carry about 20 people. Many locals use the boats to get across the creek quickly and to avoid traffic, but you'll also see lots of tourists, especially at dusk. Given that it's quick and cheap, an abra ride is a must if you plan on spending any time at all in Old Dubai or visiting the QE2 .

Al Seef Arrow

From its location within the emirate's cultural epicenter, Al Seef marries the city’s heritage with contemporary offerings. The 1.1-mile precinct that hugs the Dubai Creek is split into two areas: one dedicated to the past and another to the future. Meander through the charming laneways, stop and have a coffee or a meal at one of the many restaurants and cafes, or simply sit and watch the activity on the creek from one of the tranquil public spaces.

Burj Al Arab Burj Al Arab free

Overlooking the Persian Gulf from its perch between  Jumeirah Beach  and the Palm Islands, this stunning building has wowed architecture buffs since it opened in 1999. Its curved glass façade – modeled after the sails that have graced Dubai's waterways all these years – shelters a world-class, über-luxurious hotel located on its own man-made island. The hotel not only houses the tallest atrium in the world at nearly 600 feet high, but it is one of the tallest hotels in the world. Architecture aside, amenities include revolving beds in some suites, as well as a helipad, in case you thought arriving via a complimentary Rolls-Royce was too pedestrian. 

But you don't have to stay at the Burj Al Arab to enjoy it (and let's face it, most can't). Those who aren't crashing at the hotel can gain entry by grabbing a bite at one of the on-site restaurants. Among them are Nathan Outlaw at Al Mahara, which features floor-to-ceiling windows guarding a massive fish tank, and the sky-high Al Muntaha, located on the scenic 27th floor of the building.

Skirting the  Burj Khalifa  in downtown Dubai is every shopper's paradise. The massive Dubai Mall is one of the largest shopping centers in the world and houses more than 1,300 stores. Even if you aren't interested in buying anything, a visit to this immense retail center is a must: The Dubai Mall also contains numerous entertainment facilities, such as an ice rink, a movie theater and several kid-friendly attractions, including an aquarium that houses thousands of underwater creatures. If you happen to be around at night, stop by the Dubai Fountain outside of the mall. Created by the team who designed the  Bellagio 's famous dancing fountains, the fountain features nightly shows set to a mix of western and eastern music. 

Visitors were taken by how much was at the mall – everything you could possibly need can be found inside its sprawling square footage. A few visitors were keen to point out that you might not want to shop here after all. Because so much is imported, some reviewers found prices to be higher in comparison to what they've seen at home. Still, many said that shouldn't stop you from popping in for a visit. Of course, if you're on the hunt for a taste of Middle Eastern culture, this isn't the place to experience it. It is, however, a great escape from the heat, according to travelers. 

Jumeirah Mosque Jumeirah Mosque

Jumeirah Mosque towers over the coast from its perch north of the Dubai Marina. Its detailed white façade – which graces the 500-dirham note – mimics the architectural style of the medieval Fatimid period. Unlike Dubai's other mosques, non-Muslims are invited inside to marvel at Jumeirah's ornate decor, featuring detailed painted panels against bright blue and yellow backgrounds. But a quick note on conduct: Those planning to enter the mosque should come in modest dress – that means long sleeves and long pants or skirts. Women will also have to cover their heads with a scarf. If you don't have traditional attire, the mosque is happy to provide you with traditional clothing necessary for entrance. 

Even if you're not religious, travelers strongly recommend a visit to this attraction for its educational value and cultural significance. Visitors loved the guides' informative presentation on the architecture of the mosque and informative talk on Islam.

Within walking distance of the  Burj Al Arab  is arguably Dubai's best strip of public sand. Sun-seekers come to this lively shoreline to revel in Dubai's bright rays, while water sports enthusiasts take advantage of the calm, turquoise waters of the Persian Gulf. Jumeirah Public Beach is also equipped with a children's playground and plenty of barbecue and picnic areas. Just make sure you come early as the area grows steadily more crowded throughout the day. 

Although recent travelers said that Jumeirah Public Beach is neat and clean, defined by white sands, the water itself feels like bathwater and doesn't feel very refreshing on a hot day. The cafes that back the beach offer better spots to cool down. 

Burj Khalifa Burj Khalifa

Although we don't recommend experiencing it the way Tom Cruise did in "Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol," the Burj Khalifa is a crucial item on any Dubai agenda. Rising 2,722 feet above the city (that's a whopping 160 stories), the Burj Khalifa proudly holds the title of "world's tallest building." But that's not the only title this tower's got under its belt. The Burj Khalifa is also the tallest free-standing structure in the world and home to the highest outdoor observation deck in the world. You know what that means: gorgeous views. Visitors are invited to ride the elevator to the 124th floor for breathtaking city vistas extending all the way out to the Persian Gulf. Special telescopes also show scenes of the city from different points in time, allowing you to experience every stage of Dubai's history. You can also travel higher to the 148th floor, the world's highest observation deck, but it will cost you extra. 

Traveler reviews were mixed for the world's tallest building. On the one hand, visitors say it's a must-see simply for its world-famous distinction, but on the other hand, some found the attraction to be overpriced with lackluster views. A few tips: If you to decide to take a trip to the top, book in advance because they sell out quickly. If you can, schedule your visit around sunset: According to travelers, the spectacular views more than make up for the long wait to the top. 

Bastakiya Quarter Bastakiya Quarter free

Amid the towering skyscrapers of downtown Dubai lies the Bastakiya Quarter, the city's historic district. This former fishing village earned its name from the numerous Bastak (Iranian) traders that settled here in the 19th century. The charming little neighborhood houses the popular outdoor café, the Arabian Tea House, and several art galleries that feature the work of local and international artists, among others. Some of the restored buildings also include wind towers, which was an early form of air conditioning. The Dubai Museum is also located here. 

Recent visitors found the Bastakiya Quarter to be a nice respite from the glitz and glam of downtown Dubai, and enjoyed seeing what the city looked like before all of its developments came to fruition. Some recommend taking a quick and affordable abra (boat) ride across the Dubai Creek to a market, where trying the street vendor's ice cream and purchasing Arabic perfume are musts.

Dubai is and has been a titan of trade for centuries. To get a sense of what commerce was like back in the day, take a stroll through one of the city's traditional  souks , or bazaars. The Gold Souk, located on Dubai Creek's south bank in the Deira, specializes in glitz and glamour. Featuring glittering displays of necklaces, bracelets and earrings from more than 300 retailers, the Gold Souk is one of the most renowned gold jewelry trading centers in the world. In fact, approximately 20 percent of the world's gold passes through this market. But if you're not one for gold, don't fret. The souk also sells platinum, diamonds and silver. You're also guaranteed to get what you're paying for. The government tightly controls what is sold and by who in the souk, so you don't have to walk away thinking there's a chance you may be holding something counterfeit.  

On the other side of the creek lies the pungent Spice Souk, where vendors hawk flavors from across the globe, including cinnamon, ginger and chili. This is also the place to stock up on saffron, as you'll find this delectable spice at a much lower cost here than you would at home. 

Wild Wadi Waterpark Wild Wadi Waterpark

Located at the foot of the  Burj Al Arab , the Wild Wadi Waterpark is a collection of 30 water rides and play areas designed for all ages. The entire park is modeled after Juha, a character often referenced in Arabian folklore and featured predominately among the park. Thrill-seekers can slide down Tantrum Alley or the Burj Surj, while those looking for a little more relaxation can glide along the lazy river. There are also multiple moderate slide options, as well as a water park just for the kiddos and the Wipeout and Riptide, a simulated surfing ride that's one of only four of its kind in the world. 

Travelers say Wild Wadi is a guaranteed hit with kids of all ages, from toddlers to teenagers. However, despite all the fun-filled things to do, some found the park to a bit too pricey.

"Surreal" is one way to describe Ski Dubai. Even when the city is enveloped in sizzling triple-digit temperatures, this massive indoor winter wonderland is never without fresh powder. The Middle East's first indoor ski center, Ski Dubai boasts five ski runs (the longest of which spans more than 1,300 feet with a 197-foot vertical drop), a freestyle snowboard zone, a chairlift, as well as room for toboggan runs and snowball fights. Inside there's also the world's first indoor black run, ski lessons for the kiddos, as well as a penguin colony.   

Recent travelers loved the idea of skiing in Dubai, but warn that avid snow bunnies may lose interest. As one might expect, those who've never skied, or didn't do it often, were thrilled by the attraction, while those who knew their way around the slopes were quickly bored. Although proper gear is available at the facility, some travelers warned that it is very cold inside, and to bring any extra winter accessories you may have, especially a hat and gloves. The UAE's first national park sits on the outer edges of the city, and occupies about 87 square miles of the Arabian Desert. The reserve mainly acts as a research unit, but travelers are allowed to explore the area – with one caveat: visitors aren't allowed to tour the reserve by themselves. 

Luckily, the park offers many different types of activities that will cater to travelers with varying interests. Thrill-seekers can go sand boarding, dabble in archery or go dune driving on a luxury four-wheeler. Those looking for a more relaxed experience can soak up the spirit of the desert on low cushions in Bedu tents for a delectable Dune Dinner, or arrange a more intimate Private Desert Dinner. There's also traditional camel treks available, as well as horseback rides, and even a class on falconry. Visitors can also camp on-site, or retreat to the luxurious Al Maha A Luxury Collection Desert Resort and Spa at the end of the day. The interesting flora and fauna, as well as all of the fun activities, including barbecues and camel rides, made the experience unforgettable for most travelers. 

Dubai Museum Dubai Museum

Sitting near the  Bastakiya Quarter , the Dubai Museum offers visitors a glimpse of where this monumental city has been and where it's going. The museum occupies the Al Fahidi Fort, which is the oldest building in Dubai, previously used by the monarch and as a defense station. Today, the museum features a variety of wings dedicated to Dubai's cultural, historical and geographical landscape. Wander around and you'll find everything from goods sold in the 1950s, located in the markets wing, to information about the marine life that lies under the Arabian Gulf, appropriately located in the sea wing. There's also a folklore wing that will likely keep younger ones entertained, and a courtyard equipped with models of local boats and bamboo houses decorated with furniture used during that time period. 

Travelers recommend a visit if you're into history, or looking to beat the heat for an hour or two. Many said it was a "must-see" if it's your first visit to Dubai.

This adrenaline-packed activity that opened in November 2021 at the Sky Views Hotel allows visitors to slide down a complete glass slide from the 53rd floor to the 52nd floor. If you’re not afraid of heights, this attraction is for you.

What to do there: Stroll through the park at the bottom of the tower and perch on a bench to enjoy the vibe and views. Snap plenty of pictures of the towering beauty before riding the high-speed elevators up to the viewing points. (It is advised to book tickets well in advance to avoid disappointment.) Why it’s awesome: Fine white sands meet the sparkling blue waters of the Persian Gulf at Jumeirah Beach. There is no charge to enjoy the public beach and you’ll find various vendors and facilities close to hand, so it’s perfect if you’re visiting Dubai on budget .

Water sports are available at the beach, along with a variety of fun beach sports and activities, or you can simply relax and soak up the sun or bury your nose in a good book. The popular beach also offers great views of the ocean and city skyscrapers.

What to do there: Stroll along the white sandy shore and admire the ocean vistas and views of the city’s skyscrapers, including the iconic Burj al Arab. Spread your towel on the sands to soak up some sun or pay a small amount to rent a lounger and parasol. Paddle and swim in the sea (though do be sure to be cautious of undercurrents and rip tides and make sure that children, especially, do not go far from your reach).

What to do there: Wander through the pretty gardens, admiring the rich array of flora and inhaling the enticing scents. The aromatic garden is especially alluring. See the gigantic floral clock, observe the peacocks that roam the grounds, marvel at the huge Mickey Mouse topiary, and be awed by the gigantic Airbus A360 floral display (entered in the Guinness Book of World Records for being the biggest flower-created structure in the world).

Visit the world’s biggest indoor Butterfly Garden, home to around 15,000 attractive butterflies. Other great features include a castle made from millions of flowers, a passageway of umbrellas, a kids’ trampoline park, a walkway of hearts, a hill of flowers, a towering floral teddy bear, a shimmering lake, and a giant tortoise.

You’ll find various places to eat and drink throughout the gardens too, and there are plentiful opportunities to relax and simply enjoy being outdoors and away from the city’s hustle and bustle.

#9 – Dubai Museum – A fascinating educational place to visit in Dubai

Why it’s awesome: Dubai Museum is located within the 1787 Al Fahidi Fort, the oldest remaining building in Dubai present on every backpacking Dubai travel guide (as it should be!). The mighty building exudes a sense of strength and history, having been used as a weapons storage facility, a defensive fortress, a prison, and a royal home in times gone by.

Providing insights into the Dubai of old, from a time before oil made the country rich and the modern buildings sprang up in the desert terrain, there are heaps of fascinating displays and exhibits. Open since the early 1970s, the museum seeks to preserve the traditional way of life and culture of Dubai. The museum is one of the best places to see in Dubai for those who want some historical context.

What to do there: Enter the mighty coral-built fortress through the cannon-flanked main entrance to appreciate the structure’s grandeur and strength. Gaze up at the old tower, which dates back to the 1780s, see the reconstructed city walls, and admire the traditional boat (known as a dhow) in the main courtyard.

Make your way around the diverse galleries and halls, seeing exhibitions of musical instruments, weapons, furniture, drawings, pottery, tombstones, and more.

Look into the various replica buildings, including mosques, souks complete with an ironmonger, tailor, carpenter, and other tradesmen, homes, a Bedouin tent, and farms, see how Dubai has changed over the years at the large dioramas, and learn more about the area’s traditional pearl-diving activities. There’s also an onsite gift shop.

#10 – Hatta – A very cool place in Dubai to go for a day

Why it’s awesome: Hatta is a gorgeous location in the Hajar Mountains. Scenic views and a sense of history make for a fantastic day out away from the skyscrapers and modern way of life. The mountain enclave has a cultural town with desert farms and a fortress and Hatta Heritage Village is a great place to see a way of life long since passed.

There are incredible viewpoints and the deep blues of the sparkling lake contrast with the reddish-grey rocks and arid terrain. Of all the places to go in Dubai for nature, Hatta is one of the best.

What to do there: Feast your eyes on natural splendour as you drive through the craggy mountains to Hatta. Inhale deliciously fresh air and try a variety of outdoor adventures—enjoy thrilling mountain biking and hiking, go kayaking on the shimmering lake, and spot a variety of nature.

Admire the vistas from Hatta Dam and learn more about the country’s past at Hatta Library. The Heritage Village is a must, with its ancient fort and recreated huts and houses. History is really brought to life.

#11 – Dubai Frame – A great place to see in Dubai if you love architecture

Why it’s awesome: Dubai Frame, open since early 2018, is one of Dubai’s most incredible landmarks. Standing at 150 metres (492 feet) tall, the large frame is 105 metres (345 feet) wide. Located in Zabeel Park, the structure is surrounded by grass, palm trees, and various other natural features.

Diverse leisure options are available in the park too. Not only is the frame itself a beautiful piece of architecture, made from aluminium, steel, glass, and concrete, but the whole point of the huge frame is to provide cool views of the city’s magnificent skyline and architectural marvels.

What to do there: Stand one side of the frame and see Dubai’s modern skyscrapers as if in a picture, and then move to the other side for a framed perspective of Old Dubai. Depending on your position you can compare and contrast the old and new parts of the city.

Take plenty of pictures of the Dubai Frame and the views through the massive structure. Aside from admiring the structure and getting your Insta-fix, the frame is a great spot to meet up and hang out. Locals and visitors use the area for jogging, skating, picnicking and simply hanging.

#12 – Burj al Arab – One of the most amazing places in Dubai!

Why it’s awesome: The stunning Burj al Arab is one of the most famous hotels in the world. Coined as the world’s only six-star hotel, it offers unrivalled luxury and pampering. You don’t have to be staying at the magnificent hotel to enjoy its splendour however; many people visit simply to admire the iconic structure from outside, marvelling at the sail-like form and gleaming profile.

Standing on an artificial island, the sea provides a gorgeous backdrop to the maritime-inspired building. The hotel has featured in several films and TV shows and diverse high-profile events have taken place at the lofty helipad, including Tiger Woods playing gold, David Coulthard driving an F1 racing car, and a tennis match between Andre Agassi and Roger Federer.

What to do there: If you really want to splash the cash and spoil yourself, book to stay in the world’s most lavish hotel and enjoy star-quality pampering. Guests can enjoy all trapping like the decadent spa, inviting swimming pools, modern fitness centre, and chauffeur-driven Rolls Royce. For a cheaper (though not cheap) experience you can also dine in one of the hotel’s world-class restaurants or indulge in afternoon tea or cocktails. Alternatively, admire the elegant building from the outside and snap plenty of pictures of the striking hotel.

#13 – Palm Jueirah – Dubai’s collection of palm islands!

Why it’s awesome: The Palm Islands are a collection of three man-made islands that make up the shape of a palm. Palm Jumeirah is lined with luxury hotels with private beaches, making it the ideal place to stay if you want to be pampered and have a totally luxurious experience.

However, it is also a place best-seen from above. If you don’t have a drone, then you can sky dive and view the structure in all its glory.

What to do here: Take a stroll around the streets of the Palm Jumeirah or bathe on the private beach of one of the luxury hotels (if you’re staying there of course). To be honest, there isn’t much to see here from the ground, it’s more about having a luxury experience at one of the hotels.

#14 – Motiongate Dubai – Awesome place to visit in Dubai with kids!

Why it’s awesome: Motiongate Dubai, open since late 2016, has various cool areas with different Hollywood-inspired themes. There are diverse rides, attractions, and shows, with something to suit old and young alike. A popular place for a family outing, there are indoor and outdoor activities and attractions. The themed areas include Studio Central, Smurfs’ Village, DreamWorks, Lionsgate, and Colombia Pictures. Enter the world of film and the big screen and meet many well-known characters. There are places to eat and shop too.

What to do there: Get set for an active and fun day out at Motiongate Dubai. Discover the different enchanting areas and enjoy the cool rides. Enter the world of animation at DreamWorks, themed around movies like Shrek, Kung Fu Panda, and Madagascar, and enjoy the whimsical world of Smurfs’ Village. In Columbia Pictures you’ll find attractions based around Sony Picture productions, including Ghostbusters, The Green Hornet, and Hotel Transylvania.

Feel the rush on adrenaline-inducing rides like Blast Off, High Speed Chase, and Capitol Bullet Train, let your kids have a whale of a time in play areas like Flint’s Imagination Lab, Woodland Play Park, and the Smurfberry Factory, and have an interactive adventure at Underworld 4D and Unstoppable Awesomeness. Tap your feet at shows like King Julien’s Side Show Stop and Operation Penguin Shake, and make many magical memories.

#15 – Safa Park – A beautiful outdoor place to visit in Dubai

Why it’s awesome: Popular with locals and tourists alike, Safa Park is a pleasant place to unwind outdoors in Dubai. It’s easy to find a quiet place to relax and chill with a good book. Children can enjoy the play areas and there are facilities for jogging, cycling, tennis, basketball, volleyball, and football. The park’s landscapes include three lakes, a waterfall, and a small forest, and you can spot an array of wildlife. Each month Safa Park hosts a large flea market—visit on the first Saturday of the month for some bargain hunting.

What to do there: Choose a shaded spot to sit and relax and soak up the peaceful air, or get active and partake in some exercise. You can walk or run around the jogging track or grab your friends for a game of volleyball, tennis, or football. Stroll around the shimmering lakes and look out for the many bird species that call the park home. You’ll also likely spot butterflies, small mammals, and small reptiles too. Enjoy the great views of downtown Dubai, cook up a meaty feast at the BBQs, and enjoy an outdoor lunch at the picnic areas.

#16 – Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood – One of Dubai’s coolest historical sites!

Why it’s awesome: Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood (also referred to as Al Bastakiya) offers a charming glimpse into Emirati life of times gone by. Sitting alongside the atmospheric Dubai Creek, the neighbourhood has much of its original streets and buildings.

Narrow alleyways wind through the olde-worlde buildings and the overall vibe is steeped in history and heritage. The way of life is peaceful and unhurried. There are vendors selling traditional foods and you’ll find a wealth of cultural establishments and small stores. A variety of events take place here throughout the year, including the Sikka Art Fair.

What to do there: Take a leisurely stroll through the winding streets and narrow lanes, absorbing the nostalgic energy and atmosphere. See buildings of old, a stark contrast to the more modern parts of Dubai. Hear whispers from the past as you walk past old homes and towers, imagining a life long since passed.

Learn how the people of yesteryear lived, before oil and wealth drastically changed the city. Travel back to the middle of the 19 th century and uncover past times at the Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding. Browse in the quaint art galleries and soak up the creative air and pause for a break and to watch the world go by in a cosy cafe.

One of my favorite things to do here is to visit an old Arabian tea house and enjoy a delicious lunch meal and some exquisite tea.

#17 – Dubai Garden Glow – Quite the quirky place in Dubai!

• Whimsical, colourful, and imaginative
• Perfect destination for families
• Blend of art, technology, and nature
• Environmentally-aware attraction that teaches people about global warming

What it’s awesome: Dubai Garden Glow is an enchanting and amazing evening destination in the large Zabeel Park. Old and young alike are sure to be mesmerised by the stunning lights and displays. While attractive during the day, watch as the park goes through a magical transformation as darkness descends, with many colourful illuminated features. Split into different areas, the park also has a terrific zone dedicated to recycling and eco-awareness. There are street entertainers to add to the carnival-like air and you’ll find various shows and places to eat and drink.

What to do there: Plan to spend at least a couple of hours exploring Dubai Garden Glow and try to time your visit to enjoy the garden both during the daylight and during the dark. Little ones can run and play in the wide open spaces and younger members of the family are all but guaranteed to be transfixed in the large Dinosaur Park. Home to around 120 huge animatronic dinosaurs, it’s certainly exciting!

Appreciate the eco-friendly Art Park, with its striking displays made of empty bottles, old ceramics, CDs, and other recycled items. Marvel at the exquisite ice sculptures in the Ice Park and be dazzled by the beautiful lights of Glow Park. There are lanterns, landmarks, flowers, and animals, all made from lights. Call into the food pavilion if you feel peckish.

#18 – Dubai Opera – A great place to visit in Dubai at night

• Large performing arts venue
• See various types of shows and performances
• Designed to resemble a traditional sailing vessel
• Major cultural attraction

Why it’s awesome: Dubai Opera is a modern and eye-catching building that was built to look like a dhow, or traditional boat. It was the first purpose-built multi-arts venue in Dubai. The large venue can seat around 2,000 people at any given time and it hosts a variety of shows and events. The program includes musicals, plays, ballets, operatic performances, comedy shows, fashion shows, and more. The interiors are lavish and opulent and the building also has a restaurant and a beautiful sky garden.

What to do there: Check the listings and book tickets to see an event at the Dubai Opera. It’s definitely a great way to inject a little more culture into your stay. Admire the elegant building from the outside and inside and go up to the sky garden to see sweeping views across the city. The great views include the iconic Burj Khalifa and the sublime Dubai Fountain. Dine on delectable gourmet cuisine in the high-class restaurant too. This the best place to visit in Dubai for a blast of Wagner or Puccini although the idea of an opera in the desert is a bit Fitzcaraldo.

#19 – Grand Mosque – One of the most religious places to see in Dubai

• Large Islamic place of worship
• Hear the call to prayer five times per day from the soaring minaret
• One of the city’s most important religious buildings
• Beautiful architecture

Why it’s awesome: Dubai’s Grand Mosque is at the heart of local religious and spiritual life, and it’s also a major place for Islamic culture and social events. The original mosque was built at the start of the 20 th century, though it has been rebuilt several times since with the present mosque dating back to 1998. The towering minaret is one of the tallest in the country. Resembling a lighthouse, it’s an impressive piece of architecture. There are many fine details around the main body of the mosque, including glorious domes, stained glass, and Quranic calligraphy. Of all the Dubai must see places this is the most classical beautiful.

What to do there: Be sure to dress modestly to visit Dubai’s Grand Mosque (or any other place of worship for that matter). Walk around the courtyard and admire the building from the outside and watch as the faithful come to pray. Non-Muslims aren’t permitted in the main mosque, but you can look at the beautiful minaret. Standing at 70 metres (230 feet) tall, the lighthouse-like tower is the tallest in Dubai and one of the tallest in the UAE. Soak up the spiritual air in the heart of the old city. Come back to see the mosque at night time too when it is beautifully lit up.

#10 – Al Marmoom Desert Conservation Reserve – An unknown (but awesome!) place to see in Dubai!

Why it’s awesome: Situated just around a 30-minute drive from the hustle and bustle of downtown Dubai, Al Marmoom Desert Conservation Reserve is a great place to discover the surrounding desert areas. It’s easy to forget that the modern and gleaming city of Dubai is almost entirely surrounded by arid desert. The first unfenced nature reserve in the country, it is home to an interesting array of flora and fauna. The man-made lakes are picturesque and the area also has fascinating archaeological sites too. Many locals come here to enjoy the natural beauty, though it sees relatively few international visitors. It makes a pleasant change to the high-tech aura, frenetic activity, and tall buildings of Dubai.

What to do there: Visit the extensive network of artificial lakes, the Al Qudra Lakes and spot interesting wildlife, including some rare and endangered species. Look out for butterflies, birds, lizards, frogs, fish, and rodents, and see around 40 different species of plants. The observation platforms are some of the best places to see different native wildlife. If you can bear the heat you can enjoy long bike rides along the 84-kilometre (52-mile) track.

Visit the Saruq Al Hadid Archaeological Site, discovered in 2002, to see an assortment of artefacts from the past. Things like jewellery, pottery, weapons, and tools were unearthed here. If you visit in the late afternoon you can witness a striking sunset and then stay for a spot of stargazing. With almost no light pollution it’s a great place for astronomy fans.

#21 – Bollywood Parks – Cool place to see in Dubai with friends!

Why it’s awesome: A great place for a fun day out with your family or friends, Bollywood Parks is a unique theme park in Dubai. Indeed, it’s the world’s first theme park to be dedicated to the Indian movie industry. Inspired by the colours, music, and energy of Bollywood, the vibrant amusement park is divided into several captivating zones. There are exciting rides, captivating shows, and cool attractions as well as delicious Indian cuisine, gift shops, and backstage experiences.

What to do there: Get into the Bollywood groove as you explore the five different zones, all full of passion, colour, joy, emotion, action, romance, and adventure. Wander the scintillating Bollywood Boulevard, a riot of colour with enticing eateries and spellbinding shows. Experience Mumbai Chowk with its flair, zest, cuisine, and adventures, and immerse yourself even further into Indian life in the picturesque Rustic Ravine. This is a good place in Dubai to visit for fans of Bollywood – and there are at least a billion of them.

The decadent Royal Plaza is sure to impress and you can step into the silver screen at the Bollywood Film Studios. #22 – Dubai Creek – One of the most romantic places to visit in Dubai!

Why it’s awesome: Dubai creek connects the desert with the seaport, and was once a major trading route. It was once at the heart of the pearl trade and was/is a major place for fishing. It’s still a hive of activity today, with vessels of all sizes bobbing along the waters. The creek used to divide the city into two parts: Deira and Bur Dubai.

The Bani Yas tribal group first settled along the edges of the water. Several interesting buildings sit alongside the creek, including Dubai Creek Tower, the National Bank, and Deira Twin Towers, and there’s a pleasant Dubai park close to hand. A nice place for a stroll with your beloved, there are also several activities to enjoy here too.

What to do here: Admire the waterside vistas and take a walk alongside the creek. Admire the attractive buildings at the water’s edge and relax in the large Dubai Creek Park. Get a taste of port life at the Dhow Wharfage, an area filled with traditional sailing boats and a thronging place of activity.

Wave to the friendly sailors and watch as they unload their hauls and cargo. If you’re lucky, you may also catch a glimpse of street performers next to the creek. One of the most romantic things to do at Dubai Creek is to charter a ride on a dhow and admire the city from the water. You can also watch a splendid sunset in the evening times.

#23 – Spice Souk – Certainly one of the most exotic places to see in Dubai!

• Get a sense of the Dubai of old
• Practice your haggling skills

Why it’s awesome: Part of the Old Souk, the spice souk specialises in fragrant spices from across the globe. You’ll also find a wealth of beautiful fragrances and perfumes too—it really is a place that appeals to the senses. Furthermore, there are also other goods for sale, including textiles, rugs, and souvenirs. The narrow twisty lanes are lined with open-air stalls and more traditional closed stores and the atmosphere is pretty old-fashioned. The spice souk is definitely a striking contrast to the modern malls and shopping centre in downtown Dubai. This is the Dubai place to go for a taste and smell of typical Arabic life.

What to do there: Get lost roaming the tiny alleyways and winding streets as you peruse a wide selection of spices and fragrances. You’ll find everything here from custom-made scents that smell like designer perfumes, teas, herbal remedies, culinary spices, and incense. Discover common spices used in local dishes and pick up items to take home with you. Don’t forget to haggle and negotiate if you do want to make a purchase. Inhale the rich aromas of things like cumin, saffron, pepper, garlic, turmeric, nutmeg, cinnamon, and cloves. The heady Arabian atmosphere transports you back in time and really gives you a sense of the exotic.

#24 – Jumeirah Mosque – One of the nicer places in Dubai to sightsee!

• Learn more about Islamic culture, traditions, life, and festivals

Why it’s awesome: Built in the late 1970s, Jumeirah Mosque has a traditional Fatimid style with elements from Egypt and Syria. The photogenic building is a popular place for tourists wishing to learn more about Islam. It is the only mosque in Dubai that permits entry to non-Muslims, though do be aware that you should be dressed modestly and that women are requested to cover their hair. (Items are available for visitors to borrow.) Informative, friendly, and educational tours are available for visitors.

What to do there: Admire the large pale building from the outside, taking in the visual beauty of the two minarets, domes, windows, and arches. Take a tour to learn more about the local way of life and beliefs, and feel free to ask questions and take photos. Listen for the harmonious call to prayer issued five times each day from the minarets. Try traditional snacks and drinks like coffee and dates. Try to visit the mosque in the evening too when it is splendidly illuminated.

#25 – Alserkal Avenue – One of the most underrated places to see in Dubai

• Cool shopping and dining opportunities

Why it’s awesome: Wondering where to go in Dubai for a bit of art? Well cool, creative, hip, and trendy, Alserkal Avenue is an up-and-coming part of Dubai. Once little more than an edgy industrial area, today you’ll find a wealth of excellent art galleries and other creative spaces alongside workshops, studios, stores, and offbeat eateries. Most establishments are housed within former warehouses and factories. The area grew from one single gallery that moved here in 2008. Today, it’s one of the freshest emerging districts in the whole of the Middle East.

Why it’s awesome: Peaceful and quiet, it’s difficult to believe that the wetlands and wildlife of Ras al Khor Bird Sanctuary are just a stone’s throw from the urban sprawl of Dubai. The large sanctuary incorporates mudflats, lagoons, mangroves, and salt flats, with habitats suitable for many types of birds and other creatures.

There are fish, crustaceans, reptiles, and small mammals in the sanctuary too, with some species using the area as a breeding ground. It’s an absolute hidden gems in Dubai and one of the few places to get up close to nature near the modern desert-surrounded city.

What to do there: Admire the varied terrain and settle down in a hide to watch for a variety of wildlife. There are so many species of birds to look out for, including kingfishers, egrets, herons, ospreys, storks, peafowl, eagles, and wagtails. Zabeel Park is perhaps one of Dubai’s greatest recreational offers in terms of greenery close to the city centre. Head there to cool off and have some fun this weekend be it the barbeques, the playgrounds, the amphitheatre’s atmosphere or to see the Dubai Garden Glow nearby.

Hatta Pools

Do make sure to carry your Emirates ID and other verification documents with you since the pools are technically in Oman. Explore the rich, well-preserved culture of Hatta on the way too, by visiting the Heritage Village if it’s open.

Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood

Walk the streets and experience old Dubai just across the Metro Station which proves Dubai’s prowess as a modern city. Al Fahidi retains its 20th Century architecture and quaint little ways; in the process, transporting you back to a way of life centred around the creek and community.

Sharjah Arts Museum

Art admirers, this is your place to be over the weekend. Sharjah’s Art Museum features not just a permanent gallery of paintings by famous artists from the Middle East but hosts a variety of workshops on a regular basis as well.

Qaryat Al Torath Heritage Village

This heritage village offers you a chance to see traditional practices and handicraft-making at work. 32 stalls at the station also gives you the opportunity to take these home as souvenirs. Make sure you head there and contribute to keeping Bedouin tradition alive.

Shaikh Zayed Grand Mosque

One of few mosques of its scale that welcomes non-worshippers, the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque stands testament to the vision of the man it is named after, a vision of both splendor and majesty. One of Abu Dhabi’s cultural landmarks, the mosque is a must-visit for anyone who’s every stepped foot in the UAE.

When you walk into the streets of the Gold Souk - Dubai, all that glitters probably is gold or maybe a precious stone. If you’re afraid you haven’t tested out your haggling skills yet (the good-humored kind, don’t become the despicable customer), this is the perfect place to do so.

Jumeirah Mosque

A centre for cultural learning, it is the only mosque in Dubai that welcomes non-Muslims six days a week. The architecture is beautiful and evocative of the Fatimid style. In order to take a guided tour, make sure you arrive a little earlier into the daytime. The tour also includes traditional food.

Dubai Safari has closed for the summer but is perfect for a family day out to go say hi to over 300 species of animals and birds.

Sharjah Desert Park

The Sharjah Desert Park is a 4-in-1 package as visiting the site does not just mean you visit a botanical park but a natural history museum, a wildlife centre and a children’s farm as well. Get familiar with Arabian flora and fauna at this beautiful venture by the Environmental and Protected Areas Authority of Sharjah.

For a City Stroll:

Dubai water canal boardwalk.

Take your time along the beautifully illuminated walkways and pedestrian bridges that overlook the Dubai water canal and enjoy the sight of the mechanical waterfall. It’s a perfect place to take photos and just enjoy any cool evening. The Wi-Fi is really good too.

Location: Near Business Bay Metro Station; Cost: Free; Timings: Between 8pm and 10pm are the most recommended, but otherwise, it’s always open.

Masdar City

The city of the future’s…already present? Masdar is custom-built to advance sustainable development and its centre-piece is the Masdar Institute of Science and Technology. Open to all visitors throughout the day, your journey there will begin in a pod-like unmanned vehicle; the PRT. Enjoy as you explore a city by science, of science and for science - the city of the future.

Shaikh Zayed Bridge

UAE is one of the most photogenic countries in the world. Famous for its impressive and opulent architecture, this country sure knows how to spellbind you with its magnificence. 1. Abu Dhabi Fossil Dunes

You don’t need to be a fan of historic remains or the past to plan a trip here. Located in Al Wathba, these all-natural wonders, this natural wonder is made of wind-swept sand that hardened over time. The site is open at all times, and makes for fantastic Instagram opportunities.

2. Hatta Dam, Dubai

Hatta is just an hour drive from Dubai and it’s the perfect spot for mountain bikers, adventurers and nature-lovers. From biking to hiking there are so many activities to do in Hatta. Cooler temperature, adventure activities, quirky stay options and of course breathtaking views make this spot a must-go when in the UAE. Besides, there are plenty of things you can do when here. Rent a kayak or a paddle boat and get rowing along the turquoise-hued lake. If you’re up to explore the hills and wadis at Hatta, join one of the many groups and head o a mountain biking. Enjoy the lush surroundings and scenic views of Hatta as you ride through the rocky terrains.

Guests also sit in doughnut tubes, which can be attached with other each other. That means, friends or family members can experience the ride together. Once seated, you will be pushed down the course at rapid speeds. Fret not, the breathtaking views of the mountains will calm you instantly, letting you enjoy the experience.

Besides, Hatta has a drop-in slide that will let you slide down at speeds up to 40 to 80km/h and drop into a head-down into a pool. There are a host of slides to pick from, each with a different level of thrill. While some fly down straight, dropping you into a pool of water, a few others will bounce you across the surface of the water. Dare to take the plunge?

3. Al Rafisah Dam, Khor Fakkan

A little detour from the Sharjah-Khor Fakkan highway will take you to a scenic place where you can enjoy a private picnic. Carry your picnic essentials and enjoy a fun day with your friends and family. Besides, there are ducks that you can feed, making for great fun for little ones.

4. Jebel Jais, Ras Al Khaimah

UAE’s highest peak can never go off our list!  Jebel Jais, known as the highest peak of the UAE is part of the Hajar mountains which were formed 70 years ago in the eastern part of Ras Al Khaimah and Oman. Mounting at 1,934 meters above sea level, this peak is known for its breathtaking views, exciting adventures, and much more. And the best thing about Jebel Jais is that the weather here is always more pleasant than sea level.

There’s also a 4 km hiking trail that offers unrivalled views. The mountain is at a height of 1,300 metres, and once you’re at the peak, you can find a beautiful 180 degrees view of the entire mountain. The trip takes about 2/3 hours to complete and the difficulty level is low. It takes approximately 2 hours to get there.

5. Al Wathba Wetland

A natural reserve, this place is also known as the Flamingo City of the UAE. It is one of the few wildlife areas which is undisturbed by mankind. Home to hundreds of flamingos, the wetland is beautiful for long walks through proper woodlands and shrubbery.

6. Wadi Ghalilah, Ras Al Khaimah

Located two hours out of Dubai, Wadi Ghalilah is known for its steeper rocks and cliffs. The wadi has quite a low altitude, and because it is so close to water, the humidity and heat make it quite strenuous to trek. And if you are planning to hike, then you should make sure to take someone who has already done it or has enough trekking experience.

8. Masfout, Ajman

Masfout is one of the most preferred and beautiful summer retreats in the UAE. Nestled on the outskirts of Ajman, Masfout is at a higher altitude, which makes it pollution-free. It is an ideal spot for walking, mountain biking, picnics and wadi exploration.

9. Snoopy Island, Fujairah

Nine outdoor places to visit in the UAE before temperatures soar

A lthough it is starting to warm up, evenings in the UAE still remain cool and enjoyable. This means there are still a number of outdoor attractions that are worth a visit before it gets too hot.

While some attractions such as Global Village and Dubai Miracle Garden will close for the summer in preparation of its next season, others outdoor areas such as Abu Dhabi's Jubail Mangrove Park and Hudayriyat Island are open year round. However, they are best enjoyed during cooler months.

When the venue opened in October, it celebrate several new attractions, including a 660-square-metre House of Fear, Big Balloon observation experience, Diggers Lab for children to play and learn at a themed building site and Heroes Gallery, a movie memorabilia exhibition. An eco-friendly ice rink also made its debut.

Other new activities include Road of Asia, a street with 43 kiosks that offer food and products from countries not represented in the pavilions, such as Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Cambodia, Malaysia, Brunei, Laos, Vietnam, Nepal, Bhutan and the Philippines.

A total of 27 country pavilions were set up this season, with new participants including Qatar and Oman. Visitors can also enjoy more than 170 rides and games in its carnival section.

Dubai Miracle Garden

Although its closing date hasn’t been announced yet, the outdoor attraction closes for the summer in preparation for its next season. According to the Dubai Miracle Garden website, there are more than 150 million flowers on display in the 72,000-square-metre grounds.

One of the most popular attractions is the Emirates A380 aircraft made from flowers, as well as an Instagram-friendly floating lady, Smurfs village, a floral clock and a sunflower field. The picturesque displays aren't limited to the horticultural, with an umbrella tunnel and lake providing colourful backdrops.

Around the park, you'll also find giant horse busts, a cartoon-like elephant, heart-shaped arches and a fairy tale-style castle.

Hatta Wadi Hub

The activity centre will close on May 5. It opened its fifth season in September with a new adventure ropes course for children and adults. With its rugged Hajar mountains backdrop, Hatta Wadi Hub offers plenty of adventure and activities, from downhill carting, zorbing, a human slingshot and axe throwing, to archery, free-fall jumps, wall climbing and trampolining.

Dubai Safari Park

The park will close for the summer on May 31. It reopened in September with new entertainment and educational experiences, as well as a number of new animals.

With more than half a million visitors last season, Dubai Safari Park spans 119 hectares and provides climate-suitable habitats for thousands of creatures. Expect to see animals such as an Ankole-Watusi cow, Eland antelope, Arabian oryx, Nile crocodile and water buffalo.

Visitors can also explore themed areas such as the African or Asian villages, the Arabian Desert Safari, Explorer Village and Valley. There are also a variety of entertainment shows taking place throughout the day, plus restaurants and cafes dotted about.

Dubai Garden Glow

Dubai Garden Glow will also close for the summer, although the date has not yet been announced. It reopened for its eight season on September 12 with a host of new exhibits.

The Zabeel Park attraction features hundreds of colourful lanterns that move and sparkle, created using more than 10 million energy-saving light bulbs. It's newest addition, the Glowing Safari, features dozens of lanterns shaped like animals and flowers, while one of the attraction's popular areas, the Dinosaur Park, features more than 100 animatronic dinosaurs.

In Abu Dhabi

Jubail mangrove park.

Although Jubail Mangrove Park in Abu Dhabi stays open year-round, it is best enjoyed while temperatures remain on the cooler side as there is very little shade while walking around its boardwalk, which has three different routes. The longest one stretches two kilometres, the mid-range one is 1.6km and the shortest is 1km. The longest route can take anywhere between 30 to 90 minutes depending on pace.

Throughout the park, visitors can get up close and personal with wildlife such as birds ― herons and flamingos are some of the species found here — fish and crustaceans. There are also education nodes along the way. These include the floating platform (which allows guests a closer glimpse of marine life); power of the sea (a viewing space); roots of the mangrove (a dedicated area to see the roots of the trees); viewing tower (offering higher vantage points); salt collector (“water collectors” at different levels to highlight the changing tides) and beach tower (a low-level platform that gives visitors a chance to get their feet wet).

The waterfront lifestyle destination stays open year-round, but is good to enjoy during the cooler season as it has mostly offers outdoor seating. There are food trucks for visitors to explore, as well as a children's play area and street art murals. In keeping with the port setting, the retail units are housed in recycled shipping containers, which have been given a colourful update with street art and graffiti.

Hudayriyat Island

Hudayriyat Island also stays open throughout the summer, but because there are so many things connected to outdoor activities, it's best to visit now before it gets too hot. The 3,000-hectare island is a community with a focus on fitness and nature . Cycling and jogging tracks, a sprawling obstacle course, courts and other activity areas such as a skate and BMX park can be found on the island.

The island is connected to Abu Dhabi via a suspension bridge that is an extension of Sheikh Shakhbout Bin Sultan Street. Aside from the main road, the island can also be accessed through cycling lanes.

Sharjah Safari

The Sharjah Safari will be closed from June 1 until August 31. The sprawling wildlife attraction covers an area of eight square kilometres and is located in Al Bridi Nature Reserve in the city of Al Dhaid in Sharjah.

The safari claims to be the largest outside Africa. It is home to more than 1,000 animals and birds and 120 species, including 70 species and rare animals native to Africa, the rarest of which is the black rhinoceros. More than 1,000 native and African trees, including the umbrella-shaped acacia tortilis, have been planted across the site.

It's separated into 12 themed environments, each representing a region in Africa, and the life and terrain of the animals and birds that live in them.

The Eid break has kick-started, with all schools and most offices closed from day one of the week. If you're not travelling – and have kids who've been cooped up all spring break long – here are some entertaining activities to sign up for with the family.

Monday, April 8

Take toddlers to Dubai's latest play area, MiniBounce, which opened in the Springs Souk this month. Open to children from walking age up to six years old, the sister brand of trampoline park Bounce features ball pits, netted soft-play structures and a trampoline section custom-built for little feet. The venue also has a cafe offering snacks, mains, desserts and drinks for parents to unwind.

Tuesday, April 9

Al Hudayriyat in Abu Dhabi is transforming into an Eid market, complete with themed Instagrammable signs scattered across the island. Fireworks at Marsana aside, the area will be home to an outdoor cinema with plush sofas and surround sound; an all-day henna station; and live music courtesy of a DJ. Children will be well entertained too, with a game zone full of inflatables, slush and candy floss machines and roaming carnival-style performers.

Wednesday, April 10

Head to the custom-built Eid Wonder Souq at Global Village, which is studded with stalls offering souvenirs and gifts, as well as food trucks and themed kiosks. The open-air park will also host daily firework displays at 9pm from Wednesday to Sunday. If you haven’t visited already, check out new seasonal attractions, including the Cyber City stunt show, a fire and laser show at Dragon Lake and Mini World, in addition to the various country pavilions, Ripley’s odditorium and all manner of rides and rollercoasters. The park closes for the summer on April 28.

Thursday, April 11

Take the children to Abu Dhabi’s original amusement parks, Ferrari World and Yas Waterworld, for a chance to immerse themselves in the endearing local tradition of Eidiya. Kids can collect stamps valued at between Dh5 and Dh25 and use them to participate in fun activities set up within both venues. Other Eid-themed activities include Ayala dance performances and henna art, plus face painting and hair braiding.

In Dubai, families can head to Riverland at Dubai Parks and Resorts, which is putting on hourly laser shows three times each evening, starting at 7.30pm. Eid also marks the launch of the theme park’s latest show Alien Parade, which features space-themed characters and acts, including dancing astronauts. Meanwhile, Al Mashowa restaurant is offering an Eid dinner buffet with traditional Arabic dishes, priced at Dh149 for adults and Dh75 for children between five and 10 years, complete with an oud player and Tanura dance performances.

Saturday, April 13

Take the family to Hatta for overnight glamping or a spot of adventurous activities. The picturesque mountain town is a two-hour drive from Dubai city and three hours from Abu Dhabi. For Eid, visitors can avail themselves of a 30 per cent discount on various activities at Wadi Hub, including ziplining, archery, wall-climbing, axe-throwing and net walking.

Sunday, April 14

Check out Dubai's latest family-friendly brunch, titled Imagination, kicking off on Sunday with a one-time launch offer of 50 per cent off per guest. Mowsem in Hilton Dubai Palm Jumeirah promises an afternoon filled with mystical creatures – from singing unicorns to dancing wizards and magicians – plus arts and crafts stations, face painting with glitter, and a magic potion show.
