Digital Battlefield
Alamo then and now.
The majority of the Alamo’s 1836 Battlefield has been lost in the nearly two centuries since that dramatic battle. The Mexican Army tore down the compound’s outer walls in May of 1836. This left just two structures, the Alamo Church and Long Barrack. San Antonio grew up with the Alamo at its heart, with streets and buildings now occupying the site of the most sacred battle in Texas history. The walls enclosing the gardens behind the Alamo today, as well as the gift shop and other structures around the complex, were added a century or more after the battle.
Explore digital battlefield visualizations to see the Alamo Battlefield as it appeared in 1836, juxtaposed with how the same space looks today. You can view these visualizations on your smart phone, tablet, or computer.
Digital Battlefield Slider
This visualization begins with photography captured in November 2017. As you click and drag the screen right and left, you can take in the entire Alamo Battlefield. The slider at the bottom will take you back in time to reveal how the Alamo and its compound appeared just before the Battle in 1836. You can use the slider to mix or ghost both Alamo time slices together, letting you see where 1836 structures were in relation to today’s plaza. You can turn on and off historical markers, which note the locations of a few key places, such as Travis’ headquarters and the south gate, then and now.
Digital Battlefield Side by Side
This version of the visualization allows you to see the 1836 Alamo rendering side-by-side with today’s Alamo. Like the digital battlefield above, this visualization allows you to click and drag to take in the whole scene.
Battlefield Diagram
This schematic diagram shows the Alamo Plaza area in downtown San Antonio today; 1836 Battlefield walls and footprint included. Trees and vegetation have been omitted to show the structures more clearly. Alamo Street (in pink) runs diagonally across the graphic, north and south across the Battlefield. Houston Street also crosses the Battlefield on its north end. The Hippolito Garcia Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse , built in 1937, is the wedge-shaped structure in the top left. It occupies space where the Alamo’s north wall once stood. The Crockett Block buildings, owned by the state since December 2015, are the rectangular structure at center left. They occupy part of the former western wall. These buildings are the site of the future Alamo museum and visitors center.

Adam’s a happy chap
Carus Green Golf Club-based Adam Chapman picked up the first win of his professional career on the 1836 Tour with an impressive six-shot victory.
Playing at Dunham Forest, Chapman led the field in the 36-hole event having recorded a 31st place finish in his first EuroPro Tour event at Close House the previous week with rounds of 65 and 71.
Collecting the £2,700 winner’s cheque, Adam said: “I am delighted to have secured my first professional win at Dunham Forest.
“The first round was one of the best of my life with eight birdies. I added three birdies in the second round with an eagle on 14th. I scored on the holes I needed to and I am over the moon. It was also great to have my dad’s support in the first round with him caddying for me.
Teesside captain wins national title
“I’m practising harder than ever and hitting the ball really well. I hope that continues for my next 1836 Tour event at Wychwood Park later this month.”
The 1836 Tour is now in its sixth year, with Callaway supporting the Order of Merit and rewarding the winner with a full equipment contract. The leading member on August 31 will have their £1,350 entry fee for European Tour Qualifying School paid by the tour.
Celebrate Texas Independence at "Independence Eve"
WASHINGTON ON THE BRAZOS STATE HISTORIC SITE
Located on 293 acres of lush park land, the picturesque Washington on the Brazos State Historic Site gives visitors unique insights into the lives and times of the 59 delegates who met on that very spot on March 2, 1836 to make a formal declaration of independence from Mexico. From 1836 to 1846, the Republic of Texas proudly but precariously existed as a separate and unique nation. Washington on the Brazos is, indeed, “Where Texas Became Texas.”
Washington on the Brazos State Historic Site has many onsite attractions open daily, as well as an incredible year-round schedule of events and programs. On the grounds of this Texas Historical Commission-run state historic site is the Star of the Republic Museum ; Independence Hall ; and Barrington Plantation . The site’s Visitor Center features interactive exhibits which present a timeline of the Texas Revolution; it also houses the spacious Museum Store, which offers snacks and a wide range of Texas-themed items. All visitors are encouraged to start with the Visitor Center. This facility is free to the public and is the best place to gather information at the site, Star of Republic Museum, Independence Hall, Barrington Plantation, and purchase entry tickets.
Washington on the Brazos State Historic Site is the core of the Republic of Texas Complex , which also includes Fanthorp Inn —a wonderfully preserved 19th century stagecoach inn located nearby in Anderson, TX. A visit to this significant historic site is a must for all Texans and newcomers alike!
Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historic Site is undergoing an epic restoration and reimagination to create an enhanced visitor experience. With this restoration, The Star of the Republic Museum and Visitor’s Center are closed for renovation until mid-2025. Visitor operations and ticket sales are in our temporary Visitor Center located in the main parking lot. During this time, Independence Hall, Barrington Plantation State Historic Site, walking trails, and the picnic area will remain open to the public during regular hours. The site’s visitor center will be restored to bring the events of 1836 to life, highlighting the significance of the Convention of 1836 in the Texas Revolution. The Star of the Republic Museum will provide insight into the Republic of Texas, showcasing the diverse groups that lived in Texas at that time. Learn more about the renovations here.

SARAH DODSON AND THE DODSON FLAG
This flag was designed and sewn by Mrs. Sarah Dodson during the Texas Revolution. It resembled the flag of Revolutionary France, but with longer proportions and the Texan Lone Star in the canton. Stephen F. Austin was initially so alarmed by the obvious symbolism that he requested the flag not be used, but it nevertheless flew over Texan forces in Cibolo Creek , and may have been the first Texan flag raised over San Antonio. Some say the flag was flown over the building where the Convention of 1836 met at Washington on the Brazos, although there is no known first-hand account of this being true.
HISTORY OF WASHINGTON ON THE BRAZOS
What better way to learn about Texas history than by walking in the footsteps of those who created the Republic of Texas? On March 2, 1836, 59 elected delegates met at Washington on the Brazos to sign a declaration of independence from Mexico and create a new nation. A trip to this historic site and award-winning Star of the Republic Museum allows visitors to step back in time and experience life in early 19th century.

Day 1 Panoramic city tour
Welcome to the glorious capital of Russia, Moscow! You’ll be met by your driver at the airport and taken to your centrally located hotel.
After check-in and rest, meet your private guide at the hotel lobby for a comprehensive tour of Moscow by car. Visit the starkly contrasting Theatre Square to see the stunning Bolshoi Theatre, pass Tverskaya Street, the city’s main boulevard and home to the landmark Yeleseyevskiy Grocery Store.
You’ll enjoy a panoramic drive along the Moskva River, where a huge, controversial state of Peter the Great was erected. Pass by the legendary Gorky Park and the White House before a stop at the architecturally stunning Novodevichy Convent, and the observation platform at Sparrow Hills, for a bird’s eye view over this staggering megalopolis.
Day 2 Red Square and Kremlin
After breakfast at the hotel, your guide will take you on a walking tour of the historical city centre. Stroll through the Red Square, the hub of cultural life in Moscow, with its elaborate ‘stone flower’ fountain and fantasy-like St Basil’s Cathedral – a postcard-perfect symbol of the nation. Admire the grandiose façade of GUM, the city’s most luxurious shopping centre, and visit Alexander’s Garden, with its eternal flame and the chance to watch a changing of the guards.
Break for lunch before continuing on a tour of the Kremlin and Armoury Chamber, famous of its collection of tsarist fashion, with regalia such as jewel-encrusted crowns, orbs and sceptres as well as arms and armour, exotic gifts from the leaders of faraway lands, and an illustrious case of Imperial Faberge eggs.
As an option* spend an evening on a sumptuous dinner cruise, taking in the stunning sights and city lights of this mesmerising metropolis by night.
Day 3 Metro and Arbat Street
Start a day with a tour of Metro, stopping on the way to marvel at some of the most elaborately decorated stations of the world-famous Moscow subway system. Take a stroll along Old Arbat street - the most famous street in Moscow. Through the centuries Arbat used to be one of the most bohemian places in Moscow. Today Arbat is a promenade full of small cozy cafes and street life.
The afternoon is free for you to either enjoy the rest of the day on your own or choose among optional excursions to explore more of Moscow. Visit the Tretyakov Gallery or Pushkin State Museum to admire Russian art. Join locals for a stroll at the Gorky or VDNH park.
Visit beautiful Kolomeskoye Estate or Izmailovo Kremlin, or spend a day exploring the beautiful city of the Golden Ring (Russian province) - Sergiev Posad. In the evening you will be transferred to the airport for your departure to your next destination.
