Overall rating

My husband and I, along with our 19 & 15 year old daughters, thoroughly enjoyed the Sacred Falls adventure. Kayaking up the river was peaceful and beautiful as the river is very calm. The hike was fun with some scramblin ... g over rocks and roots and wading through streams. We enjoyed eating lunch by the waterfall before trekking back. Our guide, Izzy, was fantastic - super easy to be around, very encouraging, and she grave great beach/dining suggestions at the end. We loved it!

to escape into the woods of kauai was so much fun!

Our guide, Justice was awesome!

Outstanding trip! Captain Jenn and crew Colleen and Amanda were fabulous hosts. We did see whales, but the unexpected highlight was our time with the Spinner dolphins. I will try to post video – so many of them – hanging out with us right beside the boat.

Wailua Sacred Falls Tour

Trip Overview

Paddle and Hike in the Wailua River Area. This five-hour guided tour is a wonderful waterfall adventure for the whole family, combining idyllic paddling on the Wailua River and a hike to a remote bridal-veil waterfall. The Wailua River became the center of activity for early Hawaiians and is known as one of Hawaii’s two most sacred places.

The trail leading to the sacred waterfall is a beautiful “greenhouse” where flowers, brooks and ferns abound. Swim by the waterfall. The early Polynesian culture is represented here, steeped in a colorful past, rich with rock-wall terracing, legends and lore. The setting for this jaunt is tranquil and tropical, the pace is unhurried. Bird watch for a night heron or coot. Swim in the pools or stream leading from the falls. Come share the life and natural history of this mystical land and enjoy its great quiet! Since 1988, when this tour was first offered to the public, a lot has changed. The main change is that the “Secret Falls” is today the best known “secret” on the island. Nevertheless, your guides will help you enjoy this tour for the paddle, serenity, and scenery you will stumble upon as you discover and share with many others, one of the best kept known secrets of Kaua’i!

Kauai’s Wailua River Kayak & Waterfall Hike

  • 3 minute read

The Hawaiian island of Kauai offers an abundance of land and water adventures. Perhaps the most perfect adventure of them all is the Sacred Falls Paddle and Hike with Kayak Kauai. What makes it great?  It combines kayaking, hiking, and swimming all in some of the most picturesque tropical scenery on earth .

At first you might think that this tour is daunting. I want you to know that you don’t have to be an Olympic athlete to enjoy this adventure. On our tour there were kids of all shapes and sizes with ages ranging from about 8 to somewhere in their 60’s. There was one family spanning three generations in our tour group. The kayaking is pretty gentle and the hiking doesn’t require extreme elevation changes that get you huffing and puffing.

Wailua River

After the logistics of checking in, the adventure launches at the south side of the Wailua River. What a beauty this river is! The river edge is surrounded by all sorts of thriving greenery from the river’s edge up to the surrounding mountain tops. I was particularly enamored with the twisted thickets of Hau trees lining the river.

View of Wailua River from a kayak

After the two-ish mile (or approximately 45 minutes) kayak up the river, you put out the kayak to begin the hike into the depths of a Kauai forest. The hiking portion is approximately one-mile long and as I mentioned, it’s not particularly strenuous. Along the way, we enjoyed the seeing the native trees and hearing the sounds of the waterfall and river.

kauai2010 19

Your hiking is rewarded by arriving at a natural pool feed by a 100-foot, bridal-veil waterfall. The waterfall’s Hawaiian name is Uluwehi, but it commonly called Sacred or Secret Falls. Here, you can choose to take a swim in the refreshing waterfall-fed pool or you can park yourself on a boulder to be mesmerized by the waterfall. We opted for a little of both. Our tour included an excellent picnic lunch at the waterfall with wraps, chips, cookies and freshly sliced pineapple.

Secret/Sacred Falls

After the dip and rest stop at the falls, you hike back to the kayaks and paddle back down the Wailua.

What to Know When You Go

  • Based on our excellent experience, I can recommend Kayak Kauai’s tour. I felt like the quality of the stable kayaks, tour guide, and lunch were at a high standard in comparison to what I saw from other companies. By the way, the folks at Kayak Kauai “invented” this tour in 1988 per their website. Their guided tours are 5 hours long.
  • Wear sunscreen and a hat or visor.
  • Bring a swimsuit and towel if you plan to swim at the waterfall.
  • Kayak Kauai provided a dry bag to store our towel and camera.
  • Bring a camera that’s waterproof.
  • Wear shoes or sandals that are designed for hiking in wet areas. For example, I wore these shoes and they were perfect. I never had to take them off, even when I went swimming.
  • Do be careful with your footing over roots and rocks on the trail and the slippery boulders in the pool.
  • I asked our guide if he thought there was a better time of day to go on this tour depending on the season. He seemed to think that in the winter, the afternoon tour tends to be better and dryer. In summer months, he said the morning tour might be the best choice as it’s slightly cooler.
  • I’m “borrowing” the map shown below that indicates all the key points of this tour.

I highly recommend visiting Wailua River. It’s a huge river considering the small size of the island. The reason why the river has so much water is because one of Kauai’s mountains receives the most rain than any other place in the world.

Christian – Thanks for your comment and observation. It blows my mind to try to understand how one mountain on an island in the middle of the Pacific feeds so many rivers and waterfalls in Kauai.

oh my goodness. That looks amazing! What a fun experience with out a lot of committment!

Janet – it’s a blast. We both felt like we had gotten a little bit of a work out by the time we were done. But, as you pointed out, we got to do a lot without feeling like we needed an ambulance to take us back to our hotel. 🙂

We will have our 75 year old mom with us. She is very adventurous bus definitely slowing down. Do you think this would be too much of a strain for her? I thought if we put her on a tandem with one of us it might not be so hard on her, but still don’t want to do something too strenuous for her. Thank you for your great site!

All the kayaks that we saw were tandem. The kayaking could be a little bit strenuous when paddling up stream, so if you pair your mom with someone who has good upper body strength, it shouldn’t be a problem.

As far as the hiking goes, there’s not much elevation change. A walking stick or pole might be helpful for the hiking part.

This is a great Kauai adventure. Have fun!

Can you just hike to the falls rather than taking the kayak?

Not to my knowledge…you have to kayak up the river to get to the hiking trail.

Your Kauai Kayak Adventure

Aloha! Welcome to the Wailua River’s most popular tour. Paddle the majestic Wailua River, which is the only navigable river in Hawaii. This peaceful river winds through a tropical garden paradise of abundant palms, ferns, flowers, and wildlife.

Paddle past Kamokila Village, where the opening scene from the movie, “Outbreak,” was filmed. It is also a cultural village depicting the Hawaiian civilization back in the 17th century.

Soon you will come to the North Fork where you will paddle leisurely through the Garden Isle’s most beautiful jungle river until you come to the trail head for Secret Falls. Enjoy a moderate hike through the Wailua rainforest, the original home of the first Hawaiians, who paddled from the Marquesas Islands to Kauai almost 1500 years ago. Hear the legends and learn about the flora and fauna of Kauai’s most sacred area.

The final portion of your hike is to the enchanting Uluwehi Waterfall, which descends 125’ into a natural pool surrounded by rocks and vegetation. Take a refreshing dip and play in the pool which was once only reserved for a king!

To learn more about this tour, see the river, and experience the hike, watch our video below! We were so impressed with our son hiking the trail. Kayak Wailua By Scott Mario

Wailua means spirit. The area where Kayak Wailua is located was once known as Wailua Nui Hoana (Great Sacred Wailua).

OVER 3,100 FIVE-STAR REVIEWS ON TRIPADVISOR

wailua sacred falls tour

The falls were magical, refreshing, and beautiful. We particularly appreciated the off-site parking, the comfortable kayak backrests, and the no-frills (i.e. bring your own) lunch approach. This was an excellent value and great way to appreciate an aspect of the island we hadn't previously seen.

This was the best hike/kayak trip that I have ever attended. Our guide Terada was amazing in showing us everything and explaining everything to us. It was my birthday and she truly made it so much fun. She was also extremely helpful with my entire group during the entire trip. I would recommend her to anyone that comes to this island. Again, this adventure and Terada were both amazing. I definitely plan on doing this again.

This was a memorable day. We had a great guide, who was really knowledgable about the area and fun as well. It's an easy paddle, followed by a pretty long walk with muddy sections, so bring shoes that you don't mind getting dirty. Truly spectacular, and one of the highlights of our trip.

Dan was our very knowledgeable guide and was extremely helpful. He talked about the area history and gave us some interesting information regarding native species, damage from the hurricane and other details. He ensured that we all had a walking stick and made sure we were all safe on the trail. You can tell Dan really cares for the land and its wildlife. I would highly recommend Dan and Kayak Wailua.

We aren't experienced kayakers, but you do not have to be. The kayak was easy and relaxing. The hike had a few slippery places and if you have to watch out or your might twist your ankle. If you have walking issues don't do the hike.

Great company. Owners are very nice and worked with us. Facility and kayaks are in great shape. Definitely recommend and will book again!

This was one of the best experiences we’ve had during our week on Kauai. The hike to the falls was challenging but well worth the effort. Our guide, Lisa, did a great job. She was extremely knowledgeable and it was evident that the safety of her guests was her top priority. We’ll recommend this trip to all our friends.

Miles Less Traveled

Why You Need to take a Wailua River Kayak Tour (And Who to Do it With)

girls in waterfall pool sacred falls wailua river kauai

I thought about the ocean a lot before visiting Kauai. I certainly dreamed about the hiking. However, what I had not anticipated, was the rivers. Think lush rain forests surrounding water made a sparkling emerald by the minerals in the soil that led to cascading waterfalls. That’s what we found on the Wailua River kayak tour. Paddling the wide, serene waterway, hiking through the lush jungle, and swimming beneath Kauai’s Secret Falls…now THIS was paradise.

There are brief moments in our travels that we attach ourselves to like some part of our identity is in them. Kauai had more of these moments than my molecules could handle–moments like touring the Napali coastline or eating my way through the island –but maybe none so more than this one. The moment when I scrambled behind these sacred falls, screaming and laughing and kissing the wall just as I was told to. When I scraped my knees and tried in vain to pull the hair from my face that the pounding water had plastered to my skin. When our guide, Kathleen, paid spiritual reverence to the falls. These are the moments we live for, the reasons why we travel.

Choosing a Wailua River Kayak Tour

wailua river kauai hawaii

There are several choices for tours but when we realized that Wailua Kayak Adventures is family owned and operated we went with them. Our guide’s name was Kathleen, and I knew almost immediately that I loved her. After she lovingly acknowledged the ever-present chickens of Kauai with tenderness, speaking to them softly and giving them bits of popcorn, I was all in. Up until that point, I had only heard people speak of the chickens with irritation Yes, my soft animal-loving heart was instantly enamored with this woman.

*Note this post was NOT sponsored by the tour company and we are making no revenue from recommending them. They were just a great company and we wanted to promote them.

Wailua River Kayak Tour Details

We paired up and paddled out, upriver 2.5 miles to start. The River is wide and swift, but the current is steady and manageable. It is not overly challenging–nothing like kayaking in Milford Sound –but by the end of the day my shoulders were hurting. The tour started at 1 PM, and we set off into the blazing afternoon sun as a group of 6.

The first paddle up river takes roughly an hour or two. The day we went was gorgeous weather, sunny and a bit breezy to offset the heat. The route is pretty straight forward and people do go without a group, though there were a couple of turns that made having a guide handy. Plus, Kathleen was really knowledgable about the water we were on the importance of the waterfalls.

Hiking to the Secret Falls

Two woman hiking with backs turned secret falls kauai

We landed our kayaks at a muddy bank to embark on the hike to the falls. It’s easy to spot, we were far from the only tour group out there. Once labeled the “Secret Falls”, nowadays, the waterfall up Wailua River is visited endlessly by tour groups and individual kayakers. It’s gorgeous and totally worth the experience, but don’t come here looking for solitude. You’re not stumbling into a hidden waterfall, you’re going to a tourist attraction.

The hike is less than a mile and not particularly challenging, but slogging through the mud and multiple river crossings makes it a slow–and especially fun–journey. I passed folks of all shapes, sizes, and ages working their way towards the falls. This is open to hikers of all levels.

In spite of the people all competing for the space, the Secret Falls are truly spectacular. At 160 feet high, the waterfall is at once powerful and serene. According to Kathleen, the water here is sacred, and you must kiss the wall behind the falls for blessings.

Paddling Back

The 2.5 mile paddle back to our starting point was a bit easier. Maybe because my friend and I switched spots in the kayak, or maybe because we were headed down river this time. We paddled slowly, enjoying the scenery and taking in the water color as it shifted with the now setting sun.

Towards the end, Kathleen drifted into one of her deep thought moments that we’d quickly learned to embrace. We were chatting about romance, about life and love. I’m not sure how we bonded so quickly, I’ll leave it to the fact that Kathleen was just the kind of person you wanted to know and to listen to. She had that magnetic charge that some people do, filled with wisdom and kindness.

“We are beings of love,” she said mystically, “we are not meant to carry the burden of life alone.”

Indeed, Kathleen, we are not. So grateful to have sacred waterfalls, each other, and people like you to help lighten the load.

Kapa’a Town

Wanna try some delicious local food? Check out Pono Market. Located in Kapa'a Town, this historic market sells Hawaiian food and local style plate lunches featuring island favorites like Shoyu Chicken, Kalua Pig, Chicken Lau Lau, Pork Adobo, and more! They also sell Poke Bowls, Rice Bowls, and Fried Chicken Bowls along with a variety of poke and sides. Their menu changes daily.

HOURS : Monday - Friday 6am-2pm. Closed Saturday & Sunday.

Konohiki Seafoods specializes in desserts, Hawaiian favorites, and, of course, delicious seafood dishes! They sell everything from poke and plate lunches to pies, mochi, and spam musubi.

If you’re starting the tour in Lihue, we recommend you pick up some snacks and water here. There are limited spot s for food until you reach Kapa’a, where you’ll have tons of choices. Not hungry? Just skip this spot.

HOURS: 6:30am - 5pm (Closed Sundays)

Technically, Sleeping Giant has three hikes of varying difficulties, but our tour takes you to the Sleeping Giant West Trail, which is the easiest. This trek is just over 2-miles round trip, and once you reach the top, you’ll be amazed by the sweeping views of the entire Wailua Valley, Kauai’s coast, and Kapa’a Town.

The hike involves a bit of a climb and makes for a pretty good cardio workout! There are some steep and rocky sections. And if it has rained recently, the trail can get very slippery, so be careful.

NOTE: Stay on the main trail and don't follow any side trails. Some of these are pig trails that don't lead anywhere.

The Kuilau Ridge Trail begins at the Keahua Arboretum. The beginning part of this trail is relatively flat with a broad shaded path through an old growth forest featuring many native plants. Enjoy panoramic views of the Makaleha Mountains. The four-mile round trip trail is quite long, but we recommend just hiking the first mile or so.

Ho'opi'i Falls is a fairly easy hike featuring two beautiful waterfalls!

Go past the last house on the left. Look for parking along the shoulder on the left side (where there are no houses) then turnaround and park.

To the First Waterfall:

The hike to the first waterfall is about 2-mile round trip. Take the main trail and hang a right at the stream. Then just follow the river for about 10 minutes. When you hear the waterfall, take the second path down to the waterfall. It is a little steep, but the roots kinda act like stairs. (The first path leads to the same place but is much steeper.)

To the Second Waterfall:

From the first waterfall, return back to the main trail then continue for about 30 minutes or so. Close to the trail’s end, the trail forks to the right. Then you have to climb up a small hill before getting down to the base of the waterfall where you can swim. The second falls plunge into a wider pool with a rope swing. When done, just return back the way you came.

Just so you know, if you decide to check out the second waterfall, you may see signs that say “no trespassing,” but the land is actually state land. However, the access path is leased by some farmers. Occasionally the farmer may discourage going further, and if so, you need to respect their wishes. But mostly, no one minds as long as you respect the area and pick up your trash.

Directions to Trailhead:

Go to the end of Kawaihau Road, the trail starts next to the last house on the left. There is no sign and might be overgrown with grass. But you’ll find a worn-out path that leads you on the trail.

  • Drive slow in the residential neighborhood and do not block driveways or mailboxes.
  • Use good judgement as usual.
  • Do NOT go if recently rained or there is a flash flood warning.
  • Avoid getting water in your eyes, nose, mouth or open sores. The water here contains Leptospira and other harmful bacteria that could make you very sick.

Please note: Reservations are required to enter the Kadavul Temple building, but visitors may freely visit the outdoor grounds from 9 am - noon.

Nestled on the outskirts of Wailua State Park, you’ll find a 363-acre Hindu monastery that’s considered one of the holiest sites in the Hindu religion. This Kadavul Temple is home to the largest quartz crystal on earth surrounded by 108 golden statues of the Hindu god Siva. At the monastery, you can also walk through the site’s sacred garden where you’ll see rudraksha trees, a shrine to Ganesha, and a Hindu demi-god in the form of an elephant.

There’s no entrance fee, but donations are welcome.

HOURS : 9 am - noon

For reservations for the Kadavul Temple, click here .

For temple protocol and dress code, visit here .

Lydgate Beach Park's golden sands and protected waters make it a favorite place for families and visitors of all ages. Kids will enjoy the gigantic Kamalani Playground. There are also rock-enclosed pools that make swimming and snorkeling safe and fun for children and beginning swimmers. The protective pools were constructed so that reef fish can still come and go as they please. You can also find lifeguards, picnic tables, and restrooms here.

Located in Wailua River State Park, Opaeka’a Falls is a spectacular 150-ft waterfall that flows over volcanic basalt rocks. Stop for a photo op right next to the parking lot as there’s no hike to the falls. If you have the time, follow the path here and cross the road for a nice view of Wailua River.

Hikinaakala Heiau and Hauola Heiau are ancient Hawaiian temples located in Lydgate Park at the end of the road.

Hikinaakala means "Rising Sun" in Hawaiian. This heiau was built approximately 1,200 years ago and was dedicated to the sun.  B ecause it's located on the east side of the island, it was the perfect place to watch the sunrise. In ancient times, the dawn of the day was celebrated here with chants, drumming, and prayers. It is said that on special sunrises during the equinoxes, the sun literally lit up the heiau. Its lava rock walls were believed to have been six feet high and up to eleven feet wide! That’s a lot of heavy rock, hand-picked, carried, and placed.

The other heiau, Hauola, was a refuge and sanctuary. Here the gates were always open to the fugitive who broke the law or kapu. He could rush in and remain within its walls for a few days or even more. Upon leaving, he would be immune to punishment and free to go.

For more information on these heiau, click here .

Although not large in size, archeologists believed that this Holoholoku Heiau is the oldest temple on Kaua'i and of great significance. The temple is located right next to the royal birthstone where chiefesses from the ruling families came to give birth. Only by delivering her baby at this sacred location, could a mother of royal lineage ensure her child’s chiefly status. All the kings of Kaua’i were born here–including Kauai’s last ruling chief, King Kaumuali’i.

Now, some archaeologists believe this heiau was a luakini or war temple where human sacrifices were made. Legend says the first Polynesian temple drums were brought from Tahiti and placed right here to be used in sacrificial ceremonies. However, some Native Hawaiian elders or kupuna of the area disagree. According to oral history, this heiau was actually used as an agricultural temple. And rather than announcing the death of humans, they say the drums here were used to announce the birth of royal babies.

When you’re done here, turn left to continue the tour. After you pull out of the heiau, look to your left. The large, flat lava rock is the royal birthstone where those of royal lineage were born. Again, it’s just around the corner as you leave the heiau.

Next to the Holoholoku Heiau are the sacred birthing stones. The royal birthstone is where chiefesses from the ruling families came to give birth. Only by delivering her baby at this sacred location could a mother of royal lineage ensure her child's chiefly status.

All the kings of Kaua'i were born here--including Kauai's last ruling chief, King Kaumuali'i.

Next to the birthing stone on the right is a very large rock with grooves in it. This was the pohai piko where, according to Hawaiian custom, the umbilical cord and placenta were wrapped in kapa cloth and wedged into the holes in the rock. As an ancient ritual, the parents of the newborn child did this to foretell the future of the child.

Poli'ahu Heiau is located high above the Wailua River with a commanding view of both the sea and the mountains. Legend has it that this heiau was built by the menehune, the ancient little people of Hawai'i who were expert architects and builders.

Because of its size and construction, most scholars believe that this was likely a luakini heiau or sacrificial temple where rituals involving animal--and even human--sacrifice took place. These sacrifices were most likely to honor the war god, Ku.

In ancient times there used to be a bellstone here. This was a huge rock that, when struck in just the right way, would make a deep thumping sound that would echo throughout the entire valley. This was used to announce important visitors and events or even the birth of a child.

Also from the small parking area, you’ll get a chance to view the mighty Wailua River in all its glory as it makes its final voyage into the Pacific.

For more information about the history of Poli'ahu Heiau, click here .

Wailua Falls is the first waterfall we will visit on this tour. These twin falls are one of the largest and most accessible waterfalls on Kaua'i. Plunging over a hundred feet off a cliff, Wailua Falls offers a very dramatic view.

Fun Fact: Wailua Falls was featured in the opening scene of the popular 1970s TV show Fantasy Island!

The name Wailua in Hawaiian means “two waters”. Some say that this represents the two forks of this great river, or the meeting of two waters – fresh water & salt water at the river mouth. But some historians suggest that Wailua was named after the great 14th century chief, Wailua Nui Aho’anu.

Standing below Mt. Kawaikini and Mt. Wai’ale’ale, which is the wettest place on earth, Wailua Falls flows year round with an abundant supply of water. If you are lucky, you will see a rainbow over the falls. It is a real treat.

Pull over into a parking lot to learn about Sleeping Giant and view the mountain from a completely different vantage point.

Kapa’a Town is a seaside neighborhood with cute restaurants, a few hotels, and some historic landmarks. During your visit, walk around the town to visit local shops or try some delicious Hawaiian food.

For the landmarks in Kapa’a Town, we’ll have you pull over to listen to stories about these sites.  Here’s what you’ll find:

  • Kapa’a Library and Mo'ikeha Railroad Bridges
  • Japanese Lantern
  • Hee Fat Building

What a wonderful app! Such a breeze! Drive slow so you don't miss the stops! You can toggle the music on and off. I did waimea canyon and it was spectacular!

You must get this app!

I cannot say enough good things about this app for tours in Hawaii! My husband and I are in Kauai and followed two of the audio tours. You get the app for free and then you pay for the audio tours – – $19.99 for one or $29.99 for the bundle of three. If you visit all the islands, you can bundle, all of the islands for, I think, $69. We followed one up the north shore and visited little-known beaches and hikes, had the best poke bowl I’ve ever had, and heard stories of legends, culture and history. My husband did the Waimea Canyon tour and loved it as well! This is a great way to explore the island at your own pace doing what you want to do. The guide is knowledgeable and fun to listen to!

Perfect tour for our trip to Hawaii

Downloaded the tour for Waimea Canyon and was very glad I did! The tour was excellent. The guide was a little silly. Overall, a great day in Kaua’i.

How to see Wailua Falls?

Drive to Wailua Falls viewpoint - you can’t hike to the falls, but the viewpoint offers the perfect vantage point to take in this stunning waterfall. Get turn-by-turn directions to Wailua Falls on Shaka Guide’s Wailua Valley and Waterfalls Tour.

How many waterfalls are there on Kauai?

Kauai boasts about 100 waterfalls. Kauai is also known as the Garden Isle for its lush landscapes. From rugged coastal cliffs to abundant rainforests - Kauai’s diverse scenery is a sight to behold.

What are the best Waterfalls in Kauai?

Of Kauai’s many waterfalls - Opaekaa, Wailua, and Ho'opi'i Falls are some of our favorites. You can visit all three on Shaka Guide’s Wailua Valley and Waterfalls Tour.

What is an Audio Tour Guide?

Think of us as your personal tour guide in an app. Our tours provide everything a guided tour does, but with the freedom to explore on your terms. Here’s how it works:

  • GPS triggers audio narration to play automatically as you drive or walk.
  • Listen to stories, get local insights, visit must-see stops and get turn-by-turn navigation.
  • GPS triggers audio narration to play automatically as you drive or walk. Listen to stories, get local insights, visit must-see stops and get turn-by-turn navigation.
  • The app works offline so even with spotty service we’ll get you where you need to go.

Pretty cool huh? We think so! Check out our tours and let’s explore together.

Where does the tour go?

The tour begins in Lihue or Kapa’a and is completed in a clockwise loop ending where you began. Most of the tour is spent exploring the rainforest area of Wailua valley.

Here are some of the popular spots you can explore on the tour!
