Tycho (real name, Scott Hansen) is an electronic producer out of San Francisco, California, United States. He is well-known for composing ambient, experimental electronica, fusing elaborate analogue melodies, with atmostpheric synthesised sounds. While his sound can be described as dance music, it is on the outer perimeters.

Tycho’s style is more concerned with creating interesting soundscapes than blasting out pulsing club hits. It is a blended, sometimes soporific narcosis of wide-ranging sound clips that ranges from spacey, to aquatic, to harmonious, to dissonant. Tycho encapsulates the analogue sounds, instrumentation and samples of early electronica – Kraftwerk and Neu!, to wit – while staying strong to a futurist ethos.

He’s signed to Ghostly International, a Detroit-based electronic label that focuses on alternative electronic music and has released a range of underground artists including Com Truise, Tropic of Cancer, Gold Panda HTRK and ADULT. across genres ranging from break-beat, synthwave, shoegaze and indietronica.

He’s released two full-lengths with Ghostly International 2011’s “Dive”, including the singles “Hours” and the title track, “Dive”, and 2014’s “Awake”, with the singles “Montana”, “Spectre” and “See” as well as the title track.

“Awake” charted Number 2 on the US Dance/Electronic Albums Chart and Number 3 on the US Independent Albums Chart.

His sound has drawn varied comparisons from critics to the down-tempo lo fi of Toro Y Moi and Washed Out, to the glittering drone of Boards of Canada, to the intercut trip-hop of DJ Shadow.

He’s done official remixes of Little Dragon’s “Little Man”, Ulrich Schnauss’s “I Take Comfort In Your Ignorance” and Thievery Corporations “Fragments”.

Alongside his musical prowess, Hansen is also an established visual artist, working under the alias ISO50 for his design and photographic projects.

Live reviews

I saw Tycho live with a group of my best friends on a really chill night before we went bar hopping. We were all childhood best friends, who hadn't seen each other in a few years. We just by chance had the opportunity to see Tycho.

I was so very impressed by Tycho's performance. Scott Hansen is a really chill laid back guy, who has a humble band backing him. You get the sense that they're just a group of guys who like creating innovative melodies. Hansen barely looked at the audience, which doesn't mean he wasn't responsive.

In fact, I really appreciated it because it felt to me that he was so involved in the music and so involved with creating beauty that he couldn't concentrate on anything else. Because there are no lyrics, Tycho reaches the audience in a much more subtle yet poignant way. The music and lighting worked together to create a harmonious experience and emotionally powerful performance.

The lights dimmed and changed colors at just the right moments during the songs, and I felt like I had the power to create my own lyrics to the music, that I was in some ways apart of creating the music just by reverently witnessing it. I felt incredibly inspired and contemplative the entire performance, and so did my friends! We all found ourselves holding hands and swaying to the music. Instead of going out later that night, we downloaded Tycho's album and went to a park and listened to the music.

Honestly one of the most incredible concerts I've been too. Since it was in Brazil, not that many people were familiar with the bands songs but still were energetic and all about the vibe throughout the set.

I'd say that the fact that it was in a bar/nightclub helped because there was enough space for a sizable crowd that filled the room and the sound was on point. It also gave a more intimate vibe so that the atmosphere could truly reach the "Tycho" feel.

The band was really cool too. They were very grateful with the audience and when they were done and people chanted for an encore, Scott came back out and played a remix of "A Walk" and then the rest of the band came out and they respeated to more songs. (If I remember correctly, it was "Hours" and "L") After they went backstage for a bit, Scott came back out to take pictures and sign shirts, posters, and records. Since I was the only american in the crowd I was able to talk to the guys for while and even got some drinks with Scott and Rory (I'm honestly not kidding. I'm still stunned.)

It was an incredible experience and I highly reccomend going to see them anytime they're near you. You can definitely go alone (it was hard to convince my friends to come) and dance and just vibe out. It also seems like a great concert to bring a date to since it gets intimate and the music has you feeling blissful the whole way through.

This is the third time I've seen Tycho and they really up the ante with every show. Since releasing Awake and moving into a more post-rock sound Scott Hansen (with his wicked talented band) has really developed this huge presence on stage. It sounds kind of strange to say that considering how vibe-y the music is, but despite the ultra chillwave vibes that the music elicits, Tycho manages to put on these really big, beautiful and just grand performances. The great thing about having seen him (Scott Hansen) and them (Tycho) perform is seeing that evolution from a pretty standard but chill dj+visual artist set to a beautifully and impeccably curated visual and audio experience. Sick. ALSO, Hansen's other skills were really fantastically highlighted during the show. His mastery of visual arts and graphic design pulls in to the point where you're pretty convinced you may be in one of his music videos. He also did a small DJ set! People seem to forget that his perfect and impeccable taste also translates when he's just dj'ing. I get emotional when I think about just how good everything is when it comes to Tycho. They're so wonderful and I can't wait to see what they bring us next.

Barcelona 24/OCT

Tycho did not disappoint in Barcelona / Razzmatazz, hall full, and happy and friendly ppl. we miss very much Zac Brown, although Scott Hansen, Rory O'Connor and the Japanese -who i did not know the name yet-, performed perfectly. Sound a bit low of quality, Razzmatazz Hall fault, for me insufficient for the quality and cleanless sound of this great Californian band. They opened with Glider, but they did not get tired of their new Epoch album, they played wonderful songs of their all times and records. PPL liked very much songs Awake, Epoch, A Walk, L, but definitely went mad with Horizon.

If they come back, come back to see them,

for sure.;)

Electronic shows really don't get better than Tycho was last night. The sound at Boulder theater was very nearly perfect: not too loud and it was not a surprise when the guy running the sound turned out to be the recording engineer of the Dive and Awake albums because it couldn't have sounded better. The 3 session musicians that have been added to Tycho are all very talented and easily switched between instruments. I was totally blown away by how good the drummer was. He was able to play drum and bass style rhythms in between more normal rhythms on the fly. The whole group had a great stage presence. I can't wait to see these guys again.

Very good performance, but with a few negative points. The vibes and the overall atmosphere was positive, something that I really appreciated.

However, I found it rather short in duration and I felt that the band was lacking a bit of enthusiasm. I understand that a travelling band cannot be as enthusiastic in all their appearances. But from the audience perspective, you only get to see a band once in a long time, so your expectations build up as the concert gets closer.

In any case, I would definitely love to see these guys again in the future.

Great show. I liked it very much. Their music just took me to it's waves and supported with the lights and projections was keeping me feeling that shivers of pleasure during entire performance.. well let alone that composition they were performing together with the guy from Beacon. Would I know in advance I would not come so early the hear and see what Beacon does on the stage. But anyway, Tycho did great and I would definitely recommend to go to their concerts. Thank you guys. That was a pleasure.

Tycho is incredible. This is my third time seeing him and up until this point he has always played pretty small initimate shows so I wasn't sure how that would translate to a somewhat bigger sold out Crystal Ballroom show here in Portland. Let me say, it was fantastic. Music was a mesmerizing as always and his visuals that a perfectly cued and synced with each song once again stole the show. So so good. I would see him a fourth, fifth, and sixth time at the drop of a hat

Last time I saw Scott in Vancouver was around 2009 at The Electric Owl. He was still solo at that time and hadn't formed the group Tycho is today. The live show has improved immensely, to the point where I think their live music sounds better than the album. Everything was on point and just visuals suited the music very well.

Really hope Tycho release a live album down the road, because their live performances are something else.

Skooter’s profile image

Tycho was great! Definitely the dreamiest concert I've ever been to, yet the music was often very danceable. Very powerful sound. The live band played almost the whole time, with a few songs that were just DJ while the band took a break. Both the live band and DJ-only were solid. And the background videos went well with the music.

Tycho Announces Sixth Album and First North American Tour in Five Years

Grant Gilmore

Beloved electronic artist Tycho is gearing up for the release of his new album, Infinite Health , and will be embarking on a North American tour this fall!

For over two decades, Tycho has won over electronic music lovers worldwide with his gorgeous soundscapes and impressive live performances. His legacy is marked by constant evolution as he’s explored new technical advancements and recording processes while garnering Grammy nominations and nods from other artists along the way. The five albums that Tycho has produced have been exquisite, and now he’s on the move to release his sixth into the wild, Infinite Health .

Infinite Health is officially due out on August 30 via Mom + Pop / Ninja Tune and will feature nine fresh tunes from the depths of Tycho’s creative mind. For this album, he’s teased that he’s returned to his electronic roots with a style focused on breaks, drums, and rhythmic elements, while layers of instrumentation have been added for good measure.

Those looking for a taste of what’s to come don’t have to wait, as the lead single, “ Phantom ,” is out now across all platforms. On this tune, Tycho channeled the dancefloor-ready vibes of Italo Disco and married it with his signature flair and a touch of ’80s ambiance to create an intoxicating soundscape that wraps around your mind.

I wanted ‘Phantom’ to feel like a blend of lights in a nightclub with some unknown entity, a moving and shifting intelligence that served as a conduit to a deeper understanding of what’s beneath the surface of existence. It’s also about coming to terms with mortality, with the phantom being the ever-present specter. Tycho

Tycho wasn’t done quite yet with today’s release, as he also revealed that he’ll be embarking on a North American tour this fall, his first in five years. The Infinite Health Tour kicks off on September 13 in Ogden, Utah, and will see him head to cities like Seattle, Denver, San Diego, Dallas, Philadelphia, Chicago, and more in the following weeks. Presale tickets for all tour stops go on sale Wednesday, June 26 at 10am local time, with the general sale beginning Friday, June 28.

Check out the video for “Phantom” on YouTube or listen on your preferred platform , pre-save or pre-order Infinite Health , and sign up for presale access for the upcoming tour.

Co-produced alongside Chris Taylor ( Grizzly Bear ) and Tycho guitarist Zac Brown , INFINITE HEALTH was conceived by Scott Hansen to be a dramatic, propulsive turn in a new direction. Creating a throbbing, anthemic, and infinitely danceable tracklist that is itself sonically and thematically hopeful. Talking about the record, the San Francisco artist said it was “about hope for the future and a requiem for the past.”

Elaborating on its inspirations, Hansen added: “I kept thinking back to the high-water mark scene in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, the author sitting at a typewriter looking out a window onto his past, trying to find meaning in the chaos. Infinite Health is about creating a space for reflection, a mantra for spiritual, emotional, and physical healing. Ultimately, all we really have is our health — both physical and mental — and we wish infinite health to our family and friends. So in those ways, infinite health is a salutation and an imperative.”

Pre-order INFINITE HEALTH before it arrives on August 30th.

The first taste of the electro-euphoria Tycho has dreamed up for his seventh studio album is “Phantom.” The track is a gloriously scintillating rush of vaporizing synths and bubbling bass—it’s not hard to see why Hansen declared this four-minute hypnotic descent his favorite on INFINITE HEALTH .

Joining the new single is a mesmeric, mind-bending music video that Tycho collaborated with Pixel Flux ( Ricardo B. Ponce ) to create. Honing in on a prismatic sphere of light, the film evokes the cosmic visuals found in “2001: A Space Odyssey” or “Interstellar,” and synced to the song the effect is doubly entrancing.

“I wanted ‘Phantom’ to feel like a blend of lights in a nightclub with some unknown entity; a moving and shifting intelligence that served as a conduit to a deeper understanding of what’s beneath the surface of existence,” Hansen explained. “It’s also about coming to terms with mortality, with the phantom being the ever-present specter. I spent more hours on this song than any other on the record. I played a Juno emulation for that bassline, and I feel like that bassline, and style of bass playing, is something pretty new for me.”

Tycho Details New Album and North American Tour; Releases Lead Single 'Phantom'

The album, Infinite Health, will be released on Friday, August 30, 2024.

pixeltracker

2X GRAMMY Award-nominated Tycho has detailed their new album, INFINITE HEALTH (Mom + Pop / Ninja Tune). Tycho is the project of celebrated San Francisco songwriter, musician, and producer Scott Hansen, and the new album, co-produced with Grizzly Bear’s Chris Taylor and Tycho guitarist Zac Brown, is heralded by today’s premiere of the first song, “Phantom,” streaming now at all DSPs. The accompanying video, a collaboration with Ricardo B. Ponce aka Pixel Flux, is also available today and is streaming now on YouTube. Infinite Health will be released on Friday, August 30, 2024. Pre-orders are available now.

LATEST NEWS

Sonically, Infinite Health sees Tycho returning to a more electronic-based production style, "focusing on breaks, drums, and rhythmic elements" Hansen says. "Then, using that as the foundation, and having all the instrumentation follow that lead, as opposed to the other way around.”

The results sparkle, none more so than on lead single, “Phantom”, which Hansen cites as his favorite track on the album. Accompanied by a suitably iridescent, 80s-influenced visual, the upbeat track sees Tycho’s trademark sound imbued with an Italo Disco neon noir.

“I wanted ‘Phantom’ to feel like a blend of lights in a nightclub with some unknown entity; a moving and shifting intelligence that served as a conduit to a deeper understanding of what's beneath the surface of existence,” says Hansen. “It's also about coming to terms with mortality, with the phantom being the ever-present specter. I spent more hours on this song than any other on the record. I played a Juno emulation for that bassline, and I feel like that bassline, and style of bass playing, is something pretty new for me.”

Now, Hansen has followed up 2020’s Simulcast — a sister album to 2019’s Weather — with this captivating new offering, Infinite Health. Although it retains the personnel of recent works — as usual, Zac Brown shares guitar, and Rory O’Connor’s behind the kit — Hansen considers Infinite Health to mark a fourth era for Tycho.

Hansen says Infinite Health is "about hope for the future and a requiem for the past." He explains: "I kept thinking back to the high-water mark scene in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, the author sitting at a typewriter looking out a window onto his past, trying to find meaning in the chaos. Infinite Health is about creating a space for reflection, a mantra for spiritual, emotional, and physical healing. Ultimately, all we really have is our health – both physical and mental – and we wish infinite health to our family and friends. So in those ways, infinite health is a salutation and an imperative."
