Paris Muse was amazing! We had Beate -- or 'Bere' as we liked to call her -- as our guide and she could not have been any better. She made the tour so fascinating for both me and my children, and I can't recommend her enough. It was like having our own private art historian guide us through the ages. And she knew all the secret tips to navigating the Louvre. So worth it!

I can't say good enough things about our experience with Paris Muse. From their communication to the expert quality of their tour guides - everything is first class. We took our nine year old on a scavenger hunt of the Louvre with the fabulous Ms. Emma. Emma was a consummate professional, completely committed to ensuring our daughter had a magical experience and fully available to answer my wife and my own questions. Honestly, our tour with Emma was one of the biggest highlights of our two week vacation. Paris Muse is a first class organization and we will definitely be back and re-use their services.

This spring, my wife and I travelled through Europe for two weeks this Spring. Our three tours (more lessons than tours) with Paris Muse were the highlight of our trip. Paris Muse was recommended by a friend and professional travel guide. He told us that he had recommended Paris Muse to many of his clients and each of them had the same wonderful experience as the two of us. If you only do one thing during your trip to France, make it with Paris Muse. They are not guides, they are professors and instructors. It is definitely more of an education experience than entertainment, that's not say it wasn't completely enjoyable. We had the pleasure of having the Treasures shown to us by Charlotte Wilkins, the architecture explained to us by Mary Johnson, and the extreme pleasure of an incredible sharing the wonders of Notre Dame by the Director herself, Inge Laino. If you been to Paris many times and think you are a pro, you still will be enlightened by Paris Muse.

Take this tour! This was our first time in Paris and wanted to make sure we saw the best of everything first, so we took the Introduction to the Treasures of the Louvre Tour. Our tour guide, Troy, was amazing! He is getting his PhD in Medieval History and was so incredibly knowledgeable. He was able to provide all sorts of information that I doubt you would hear on another tour, and certainly not with one of the audio guides. The museum is absolutely massive, so having someone get you to all the important spots is a definite plus. The tour includes obvious items like the Mona Lisa and Venus de Milo, and since there were only two of us on the tour we had some leeway on what we preferred to see. At the end of the tour we discussed what we wanted to view on our own and he gave us directions on where to find the pieces and then how to find our way out! If you can book a tour with Troy, I highly recommend it!

While in Paris we took the Paris Muse Clues tour with our daughters 12 & 10. It was the highlight of the trip. We learned and saw more in the 4 hours with Amanda than we did the next 2 or 3 hours on our own. Our guide was excellent - a Phd in Art History! My daughters adored her and the scavenger hunt. Definitely worth the price. We went directly to all the pieces we wished to see in a fun and inventive manner. I could go on and on. When we come back we will try another tour.

August 2019- Not impressed at all. We spent a lot of money on a private family tour of the louvre, to ensure our 6 and 8 year old would enjoy the museum. The only advantage was the guide buying tickets which meant no lines. The tour was bland and the guide obviously had no experience with kids. Total waste of money.

Our tour of the Louvre with Paris Muse was amazing. Beate was our tour guide and she was so great. My 12 yr old daughter learned so much and had fun exploring the Louvre.

My husband and I did the scavenger hunt at the Musee D'Orsay with our 2 children (ages 6 and 10) and it was GREAT. At first we were a bit skeptical when our guide gave us packets and explained that we would be on our own (that is, the guides don't stay with you). But within 5 minutes our 6 year old spotted the first "treasure" which was a huge sculpture and that was it -- both kids were hooked and their excitement was contagious to us. We went from tired and hey lagged to running around the museum full of energy. We had a blast and saw far more of the museum then I thought they had the attention span to see. They didn't want to leave because we hadn't found everything in the packet yet. It was fabulous. The fact that they were focused looking for specific objects made them look at all of the objects more closely. The following day we took them to the Louvre without a scavenger hunt and it was a far worse experience. Without specific things to focus on, the kids were bored and scattered. Wish we would have done the scavenger hunt at the Louvre too. Definite recommend. Going to try to find similar hunts at home in Los Angeles.

I am just writing to you to tell you about our tour quide Charlotte. We had a private scavenger hunt at the Louvre. We have twin 8 year old girls and thought that this would be a great way to introduce the girls to the Louvre. Charlotte was incredible! On all levels she was incredible. Her attention to detail was perfect, her level of interest and energy was infectious. My girls were in love with her within the first 5 minutes. Her ability to talk to them at their level was spot on and she really cared. She also did an incredible job with her instruction, even getting down at eye level to speak to them. She also walked us over to her favorite patisserie and placed our food order. I could go on and on. She was amazing!!!!!!!

Review: Paris Muse Discovery Walking Tour for Families

Review: Paris Muse Discovery Walking Tour for Families

Paris is a great place to explore by foot, and Paris Muse  Private Walking Tours include several family-friendly walks including the Paris Discovery Walk , which we were fortunate to be able to experience with Raquel Granda as our guide. Raquel is originally from NYC but is a certified French national tour guide, has lived in France for over 12 years, over 6 of them in Paris, and is married to a Frenchman, so she can speak to cultural questions you may have, beyond her trove of historical and architectural knowledge.

This Paris Muse walking tour review is part of a recent Paris visit. For the prior Paris posts, please see:

Paris Muse Walking Tour Options and Cost

Paris Muse has several family-friendly walking tour options to select from, depending on your kid's interests:

  • Paris Muse Clues: A Louvre Family Tour – this is Paris Muse's most popular family tour, lasting 2 hours, as it focuses kids' attention on carefully selected Louvre masterpieces and sharpens their sleuthing skills via a treasure hunt. The EUR 320 cost is for entire family of up to 5 and includes Louvre admission for adults (kids are free) as well as the “treasure,” an educational gift. This tour is designed for families with kids ages 6-12.
  • Louvre Quest is a 3 hour tour designed for either families or small groups of up to 5, all of whom are at least 13 years old. With the guidance of your Paris Muse leader, you explore four major civilizations (Ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece, Ancient Near East, Modern Europe) in the context of an interactive game with a series of challenges that deepen your understanding of each great civilization. The cost for this private tour is EUR 395.
  • Paris Discovery Walk for Families – this was our tour, although with a modification to include some of the Notre Dame tour, because of some protests that made some of the tour's usual route inaccessible. The 2 hour walk helps kids discover the architecture and history of the Marais, and is EUR 270 for families of up to 5, again focused on kids ages 6-12.
  • Notre Dame for Families is perfect for helping kids in understanding how and why Notre Dame was built, showing them how to recognize features of Gothic architecture, and engaging them with the many stories of the sculptures both on the cathedrals facade and inside the cathedral, as well as depicted in the stained glass. The 2 hour private tour is EUR 250 for families of up to 5, with kids ages 6-12.

Don't have kids? Paris Muse also offers private walking tours just for adults, such as its Montmartre tour, Historic Heart of Paris Walk, Inventing Modern Paris walk, and Marais walk. And Paris Muse also shines when it comes to in depth private tours at the Louvre or Musee d'Orsay.

Preparing for Your Paris Muse Walk

If you're going on the Paris Muse Discovery Walk outdoors in summer, as we did, make sure to bring water with you, a sun hat, and apply sunscreen or wear sun-protective clothing. It was very sunny and warm, and you're outside for two hours, in our case in the mid-afternoon. And as always with walking tours, make sure that both of you are wearing comfortable shoes or sneakers and that your and child (and you) are well rested and have eaten prior to the walk.

To avoid any stress about getting to your meeting place in time, I recommend leaving plenty of time and taking the Paris Metro. I almost always prefer the subway to a taxi anyway, but particularly in cities such as Paris where traffic can be gridlocked at almost any time of day, the Paris Metro is usually far faster and more reliable.

Highlights of Our Paris Muse Walk

As I mentioned, our Paris Discovery Walk incorporated Notre Dame due to protests and security / bag checks going on in the Marais, where the walk usually takes place. But as it's a private walk, you could likely ask to combine elements of both walks as well.

Here's what we particularly enjoyed:

1. Notre Dame Cathedral Facade and Sculptures

Notre Dame Cathedral is of course gorgeous inside, but the exterior facade is just as impressive. Since my son loves building, we spent some time discussing the flying buttresses that support the cathedral's height while also permitting the large stained glass windows.

Notre Dame Southern Facade, Paris Muse Private Walking Tour

There was a line to enter, but it moved very quickly, allowing us to notice the sculptural detail on the Western facade as we got closer to the entrance.

Looking Up at Notre Dame's Western Facade Before Entering

And after our visit inside the cathedral, we returned to look more closely at the sculptures, including the one of Saint Denis carrying his own head–as Raquel explained, legend has it that he was beheaded at the very spot that the Sacre-Coeur now stands, and that he picked up his head and carried it to where the Basilica of St. Denis now stands, and where many kings of France are buried.

Saint Denis, Notre Dame, Paris Muse Walking Tour Review

We also searched for St. Peter, whom you can see to Jesus' right, holding a key:

Saint Peter and Jesus, Notre Dame, Paris Muse Walking Tour Review

2. Notre Dame Interior and Rose Window Stained Glass

Once we got inside Notre Dame, there was plenty to explain. My husband's ancestors are Quaker, so my son has been in Quaker Meeting Houses, but it's hard to imagine a more different religious venue to a Quaker Meeting House than a Roman Catholic cathedral such as Notre Dame.

He wanted to know what all the lit candles were for, which he saw some visitors lighting:

Candles Inside Notre Dame, Paris Muse Walking Tour Review

As he's becoming interested in military history, he was also curious about Joan of Arc / Jeanne d'Arc, who is credited with helping lift the Siege of Orleans and leading the French to victories during the Hundred Years' War and the coronation of Charles VII.

I never tire of the beautiful stained glass, such as the Rose Window:

3. Berthillon Ice Cream and Sorbet on Ile St. Louis

On our way walking from the Marais to Notre Dame, we couldn't resist a stop on Ile Saint-Louis for Berthillon ice cream and sorbet. It's hard to think of a tastier way to refresh during a hot day:

Enjoying a Berthillon Ice Cream Break, Paris Muse Walking Tour Review

If you enjoy fruit sorbets, my top two recommendations that are unique to France are Fraises des Bois (Wild Strawberry) and Peche de Vigne (French Heirloom Peach).

Berthillon Sorbet in Paris: Fraises des Bois

4. Square Jean XXIII Gardens Behind Notre Dame

A great way to approach Notre Dame is from the East, with a stop in Square Jean XXIII. It's a small but peaceful park, and perfect for some shady respite from the heat, as well as a chance to finish our Berthillon sorbet before entering the cathedral.

5. Figuring Out the Roman Numerals on a Marais Fountain

Paris Muse provides a fun interactive activity book for kids to engage them in what they're learning about and seeing. My son knows Roman numerals better than I do, thanks to his interest in math, so while he already knew all the Roman numerals except “D” which is 500, I learned both that one and that “L” is 50.

Figuring Out the Roman Numerals on a Marais Fountain, Paris Muse Walk Review

6. Place des Vosges

We met Raquel at Place des Vosges, built by Henri IV for the 1612 wedding celebration of his son, Louis XIII and Anne of Austria (who in fact was Spanish). The southern side is the Pavilon du Roi, or King's Pavilion, and the triple arches are matched on the northern side with the Queen's Pavilion. Many future European grand squares were modelled on Place des Vosges, with its appealing symmetry of all the buildings flanking the square.

Places des Vosges, Paris Muse Walking Tour for Families Review

The equestrian statue of Louis XIII dated 1825 in the center is not the bronze original, which was melted down during the French Revolution.

7. The Origin of “Take the High Road”

As we walked along the cobblestone streets, most of which had a lower center portion, Raquel explained how our common expression “take the high road” arose. Before the days of indoor plumbing, all kinds of wastewater were thrown from houses out the window, after a suitable warning was uttered to passers-by below. This waste flowed along the lower middle part of the road, hence the higher parts of the road were desirable, in terms of keeping out of the muck.

8. Seeing the Remains of an Ancient Marais Church

You can often see older buildings right next to modern developments, but it's more unusual to see the remains of an old church that are an integral part of a newer building:

Remains of Ancient Marais Church, Integrated into Modern Building

9. Hôtel de Sens

The Hôtel de Sens, which looks like a little castle, is one of just a few surviving medieval private residences in Paris, having been built in the late 1400s for the archbishop of Sens. As with many of Paris' historic buildings, it was later used in a variety of commercial capacities, including for making fig jam (it's located on Rue du Figuier, and you can still see some fig trees nearby). During the French Revolution of 1830 (Trois Glorieuses) when Charles X was overthrown, one of the fired bullets became lodged in the Hôtel de Sens wall and was never extracted, becoming a permanent reminder of its revolutionary journey.

The Verdict

We really enjoyed our Paris Muse walking tour with Raquel, who was great with my 8-year old–she's a mother herself, and has a real passion for sharing her love of French history, art and architecture with kids, encouraging their questions, and patiently discussing their many follow-on queries. She was also very flexible, and as soon as we mentioned Berthillon, she easily guided us there for our refreshing treat, even joking that perhaps Paris Muse should develop a new foodie walking tour.

Private tours are of course more expensive than group tours, but in my experience, having also taken private walking tours in Pompeii and Florence, it's worth it, especially when you're traveling with young kids. In a larger group, your child may tune out, find that the group is walking too fast, start complaining, and force at least one parent if not the whole family to leave the tour, or disrupt the tour for the other guests. The beauty of a private tour with Paris Muse is that you can go at your own pace, spending more time at the places that are most compelling to you and your child. Most parents want to foster in their child a lifelong love of learning and Paris Muse has figured out how to make architecture, art, and history compelling even to kids who might not otherwise be so interested in them.

One thing I would note is that although the activity books are supposed to be for ages 6-12, some of the pages were a bit easy even for my 8 year old, so if you have an older child who is also already interested in art, you may want to go for the Louvre Quest or talk to Paris Muse about something that will be challenging enough for their age/knowledge.

If you've taken a private walking tour with Paris Muse, what was your experience?

Italy Family Vacations

Spain family vacations, japan family vacations, australia family vacations, a walking tour of paris with kids: paris muse tour review.

  • By Kristi Marcelle

On my family’s recent trip to Paris , I sometimes felt overwhelmed with the staggering amount of amazing architecture and history at every turn.  I never tired of looking at it but I did tire of not knowing the stories behind the buildings, statues, and paintings.  This is where a great walking tour of Paris makes all the difference. Ciao Bambino has covered a variety of private family tours, including the Paris Muse Louvre tour which receives rave reviews from our readers and travel planning clients.  I have always wondered if the private tour with an expert guide are really worth it with kids.

What I failed to realize is that while most tours are just a few hours long, the benefits of what the kids learn lasts an entire trip and even a lifetime.  Paris Muse hosted my family on their “If Buildings Could Talk” Paris family walk.  My kids are 5 and 8 and I know that there are certain aspects of the tour that they will always remember.

The Paris walking tour lasts 2.5 – 3 hours and it flows well. The tour starts at the Place des Vosges and Victor Hugo’s house (author of The Hunchback of Notre Dame) and ends at Notre Dame Cathedral (expect adjustments to the end point during reconstruction).  Along the way we learned about important architectural structures and personages of the time.

For the most part, the walking tour took us away from the large summer crowds and into parts of Paris that we would never have seen otherwise.  The tour is focused on the children although the adults learn as much as the kids do and are welcome to participate.  During the tour, the kids are given a unique combination compass/binoculars instrument to use throughout the walk to help lead the way and identify sculptures and markings on buildings including an embedded cannon ball – these were a big hit.

Highlights of Paris Muse Walking Tour with Kids

The guide. It was obvious from the first five minutes that Inge, our tour guide, knew how to engage kids. Her expertise and skill with children is what separated this experience from other sightseeing tours or hop on/hop off bus rides. And when sibling bickering came up she didn’t flinch.  Her knowledge of the history of Paris and how to convey that to the kids was astounding.  Even with a guidebook, I could never have shown them history in this way.  Inge was able to show them through the architecture how the French value and preserve their history and I think the kids got it.

History mixing with present-day Paris. The tour successfully shows how history mixes with and becomes part of everyday life in Paris.  Never was this more apparent then when we stopped to look at a portion of the old Paris city wall.  While we learned to read the mason’s marks on the stones of the wall, French teenagers played basketball on the court right next to us. It was a bit surreal and so unlike anything we see in the U.S.

They learned something! You never know what kids will remember from a vacation and it seems like mine tend to remember the desserts they ate more than anything else.  I didn’t realize what they had absorbed from the tour until our next visit to a church and castle. They immediately began to search for the mason’s marks on the stones of the castle and the rose stained glass window in the church only to remember that rose windows are only found in the cathedrals or basilicas.  I felt like they left the tour with a set of tools that they subsequently used the rest of our vacation. This was an unexpected surprise.  Granted they’ll never forget all those chocolate croissants either. (Maybe our next trip should include a food tour!)

Tips for Families Considering the Paris Muse Walking Tour

Age Appropriate. The recommended age group is 6-12 and after seeing my 5-year-old start to break down at two hours, I think the age limit is correct.  Kids also fill out a workbook as they go along, so a parent will need to help them if they cannot read and write.

Pack snacks and wear comfortable shoes. Although we had just eaten, walking around for three hours is tiring and a good snack helps keep the whining to a minimum.

Finally, to answer my own question about whether these types of family-friendly guided walking tours are worth it, the answer is yes. Expect to pay several hundred euros for a private experience. If I could have this same type of experience again with my kids, I wouldn’t hesitate to book it. If your family has other interests as far as a tour of Paris, whether its a bike tour, night tour, tour of the Latin Quarter, or you just want to be able to skip the line at the popular attractions, our family travel advisors can help. Just promise us you won’t leave the City of Lights with this type of experience shared with your family.

Editorial Note:  Paris Muse provided Ciao Bambino with a complimentary tour for review purposes.  As always, our opinions are our own.

Hi Jacqueline- It’s now been 3 years since we took this tour and I asked my youngest about it this morning and she immediately talked about the Paris wall and the boys playing basketball that I mention in the article. I understand your concerns and would say “make it fun” – that’s what we do for our trip planning clients at Ciao Bambino and it’s easy to do in Paris. Check out the extensive Paris section on Ciao Bambino for ideas. We’d go back in a minute! -kristi

Should we bring our 4yo, 7yo and 9yo kids to Paris, France? Should we bring them to some place that is less “mature” for them? I feel that they might not enjoy touring most sights in Paris… We are citizens of The Philippines (we do occasional visits) but currently reside in Qatar. We have travelled to Bahrain, (Istanbul)Turkey and Hongkong. If they have enjoyed seeing Istanbul sights such as the Aya Sofya, Topkapi Palace etc, do you think they would also enjoy seeing the Louvre, Eiffel Tower etc? Thanks.

Hi Jacqueline, Absolutely, we love Paris with kids. There are gorgeous gardens spread throughout the city and kids do like the major tourist attractions. Given their travel experience to other parts of the world, I think they’d be fine and happy!

A walking guide of things to do in paris.

things to do in paris

With so many things to do in Paris, narrowing down where to go and what to do in the city of light can be challenging. I’ve narrowed down my favorite sites and activities that you can easily see on foot!

Ah, Paris ! Is there anything more magical than the city of light? At any season, wandering the streets while munching on a baguette is pretty much the stuff dreams are made of.  Central Paris is a relatively “small” city, at just 40 square miles, and it is surprisingly walkable. With all the delicious culinary delights to be had along the way, you’ll be glad you’re walking! For a list of 25 things you MUST eat while you’re in Paris, read my list here.

Things to do in Paris. Paris Food

Also, if you’re planning a visit to Paris with kids, read my Ultimate Guide to Paris with Kids.   Walking Paris is definitely doable with kids, but I would recommend breaking up this walking guide into several days or maybe taking some public transportation between parts of Paris that are farther apart. These stops may need to be broken up with longer trips to Luxembourg Gardens or stops at more carousels and crepe stands. This might go for adults too haha!

Things to do in Paris with Kids

Preparing for your self-guided walking tour of Paris

This self-guided walking tour of Paris will take you on a 10-mile route through the city and include the best Paris bucket list sites as well as some new surprises. Since this requires an extensive amount of walking, be sure to pack comfortable clothes and shoes. This route can be done in just one day in Paris if you’re a good walker!

Walking Paris on a Sunday

If you’re planning to do some walking around Paris on a Sunday, there are a few things you should know. Paris on a Sunday is a little different than most days of the week. Be sure to read this guide first.

Paris Walking Tour Map- Things to do in Paris

Where you begin your tour will depend on where you’re staying in Paris. There are 20 Arrondissements or neighborhoods in Paris. If you’re not sure where to stay, read this Paris Neighborhood Guide to help you decide.

I’ve created this interactive map that you can download to your phone and use without WiFi. There are 3 separate layers. Layer 1: Destinations. Layer 2: Walking directions from Montmartre to Pont Neuf. Layer 3: Walking directions from Pont Neuf to the Eiffel Tower. This walking tour of Paris CAN be done in one long day, but feel free to break it up into more if you have the time.

This walking tour covers about 10 miles throughout Paris, but is broken up with lots of sites and food stops along the way! Have fun, and if you get lost, don’t worry, that’s half the fun!

things to do in paris

#1: Montmartre

Your journey will begin in this beautiful and historic part of Paris that is known for it’s lovely narrow cobbled streets, and was and still is home to many artists, especially during the era of Impressionism such as Salvador Dalí, Amedeo Modigliani, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Piet Mondrian, Pablo Picasso, Camille Pissarro, Claude Monet and Vincent van Gogh. I like to start here because it is the highest point you will see today, which means the rest of your day is essentially spent walking downhill!

It’s a pretty long steep walk up to Sacre Coeur, but I love dawdling along the streets and stopping in the boulangerie to grab fresh bread and snacking while we make our way to the top. The view is worth it. I think half your time in Paris should be spent wandering the streets. It’s the best part!

You can visit the Basilica of Sacre Coeur, walk the streets, have your picture painted (artists here must have a special license issued by the city which limits the number of artists allowed, so you know they will be good), stop and have a crepe or some frites and take the funicular, which has been running since 1900 (but has been updated) down the steps from Sacre Coeur if you don’t feel like walking up or down over 300 steps.

things to do in paris

#2: The Centre Pompidou

The Centre Pompidou is an awesome piece of inside-out architecture that houses France’s largest modern art museum and a public library. But the best thing about this building is that all of the functional external elements of the building are color-coded: green pipes are plumbing, blue ducts are for climate control, electrical wires are encased in yellow, and the red ones are circulation elements and health and safety. Even the escalators are on the outside of the building. How fun is that?!

things to do in paris

#3: Le Marais

One of the oldest neighborhoods in Paris, Le Marais is a cobblestone paradise of vintage boutiques and small bistros. Plan to hit Le Marais around lunch time as this eclectic neighborhood is known for its food! After lunch be sure to visit the picturesque square of Place des Vosges. The Picasso Museum is also located in Le Marais. Stop by Carette for a tasty afternoon treat!

#4: Ile de la Cite

No visit to Paris would be complete without hearing the bells of Notre Dame and seeing the breathtaking view from the tower! But there is much more to explore on Ile de la Cite. Wander over the Sainte Chapelle for the most glorious stained glass windows you’ll ever see! Also worth a visit is Ile St. Louis next door.

#5: Pantheon

For another incredible view of Paris, take a guided tour up to the dome of the Pantheon, located in the Latin Quarter. The Pantheon, originally built as a church, is now a mausoleum to distinguished French citizens such as Voltaire, Marie Curie, Rousseau, Victor Hugo, and Emile Zola.

#6: Luxembourg Gardens

Walk the short distance to the Luxembourg Gardens and enjoy a stroll through the park where you can people watch and enjoy some nature in the middle of the city. There is also a fantastic playground.

#7: Saint-Germain-des-Prés

As you leave the Luxembourg Gardens, head to the neighborhood of Saint-Germain-des-Pres, renowned for its vintage and boutique shopping and bustling cafes.

#8: Pont Neuf

Cross over the Seine again via Pont Neuf, the oldest standing bridge that crosses the river in Paris, built in the 1500s.

It’s time for a stop at the Louvre! The lines can get long, so if you plan to go inside, I would considering hiring a private tour through something like Paris Muse to get you through the Louvre without waiting in line and getting you a personal art history lesson. Be sure to grab eclairs from Eclair de Genie which can be found near the Louvre food court. Snap a selfie in front of the glass pyramids, which were a huge controversy during their construction, but are now Paris Icons.

#9: Tuileries Garden

Leaving the Louvre, stroll through the Tuileries Garden and enjoy an escape from city life on your way to the next museum…

#9: Orangerie Museum

The Musee de l’Orangerie is an art gallery full of impressionist and post-impressionist paintings from the likes of Monet, Cezanne, Matisse, Modigliani, Picasso, Renoir, Rousseau and more! If you’re running short on time, pick between the Louvre and the Orangerie based on which art interests you more.

things to do in paris

#10: Arc de Triomphe

Stroll all the way up the Champs Elysees (doing some window shopping while you’re at it), see the craziest roundabout you’ll ever see, and onto the Arc de Triomphe, which honors those who fought and died for France in the French Revolutionary and the Napoleonic Wars. The names of all French victories and generals are inscribed on the surfaces. At the base lies the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier from World War I.  You can climb the steps for another fantastic view of the city and of your next destination, the Eiffel Tower!

#11: Trocadero

Walk to Trocadero where you will have the best viewing and photo spot for the Eiffel Tower just across the Seine.

#12: Eiffel Tower

Your walking tour stops at the Eiffel Tower. Originally designed for the 1889 World’s Fair, and only built to stand for 20 years, the tower came under extreme criticism from the citizens and artists of the day, but is now the most iconic structure in Paris, visited by over seven million people each year! Be sure to buy your tickets months in advance as they can book out. Also, consider scheduling a private tour. There are many that start at the Trocadero and walk you to the tower, all while teaching you about its history and skipping the lines.

I hope this walking guide to Paris was helpful and that you love your time in Paris as much as I have. It’s truly one of those places that captures your heart if you do it right. Have an amazing time in Paris, and eat a croissant for me!

This looks fantastic. Such a great city to explore by foot!

Thanks so much! Paris is amazing! xo

What a great route to explore the city – I agree, Paris is much better seen by foot. When I last visited with my daughter (in her buggy) we wandered for miles exploring. I could definitely have done with some orthotics – or a foot massage!

That sounds dreamy! I’m so ready to head back to Paris and walk the streets again!

' src=

what time did you start this walk ? how long did it take ?

Aggressively, you could do this in one day. But it would be a long day! It just depends on how quickly you wanted to do everything.

19 Best Paris Walking Tours

Place Trocadero

From ancient Roman times to the medieval period to the French Revolution to the 20th century World Wars, history has stacked on top of itself in key locations all over Paris. Find out exactly where to retrace the steps of the famous—and infamous—throughout the City of Lights, from royal gardens to market streets and grand boulevards. On these walks, which range from short and scenic to long and layered, you'll do it all: go canal-side, where the guillotine fell, find out where famous painters lived and died, and much more. Our list of Paris' best historic walks has something for ever level of history-lover.

Jardins des Tuileries Overhead

Jardin des Tuileries Arrow

This sprawling, spectacular park is the beating heart of Paris' public spaces. Standing proudly between the Louvre and Place de la Concorde, and along much of the Seine's Right Bank in the 1st Arrondissement, Tuileries Garden ("Jardin des Tuileries") has a history as long and distinguished as it is impressive, from its inception as an aristocratic playground in the 16th century, to becoming a public space in the 17th century, to serving as the site of numerous French Revolution skirmishes in the 18th century. With more than 55 acres, the park offers plenty of room to stroll and lots of photo ops. Keep an eye out for Auguste Rodin's iconic "Le Baiser" ("The Kiss") on the West Terrace. If you have anywhere to go in this part of Paris, skip the taxi or the metro and walk there on foot through the Tuileries. You'll see something different every time.

Place de la Concorde Paris

Place de la Concorde Arrow

Place de la Concorde is the largest public square in Paris, originally created in honor of Louis IV but probably best known for being the spot of the French Revolution's guillotine executions, including his successor Louis XVI. This majestic spot connects the end of the Tuileries Gardens and the beginning of the Champs-Élysées. The Luxor Obelisk, an ancient Egyptian obelisk mounted in the place in the 1830s, anchors the open space. It's a busy intersection of multiple streets, so expect traffic on your way to cross to see the obelisk and the gorgeous lateral views.

Avenue des Champs Élyses Street Overhead Paris

Place de la Bastille Arrow

The Place de Bastille is an open square where the infamous Bastille prison once stood—and fell, igniting the French Revolution. The Colonne de Juillet in the center commemorates the revolution of 1830, as well. This is a spot that is heavily trafficked by Parisians, whether heading out for dinner, shopping, or home. You'll see a broad cross-section of the city there, which is a nice counter-balance to the weighty historical events that have unfolded there.

Ile St. Louis Paris Walks

Île Saint-Louis Arrow

Île Saint-Louis is known for the elegance and grandeur of its hôtel particuliers, developed by builder Christophe Marie and designed by Louis Vau (the architect of Versailles). Built over a 30 year period in the 17th century, the houses on the island diverged from the typical wealthy homes of the time by focusing on the views outward over the Seine, rather than into an interior courtyard. The island, which was originally two natural islands that were combined in a feat of engineering, remain pristine examples of architecture from the 17th and 18th centuries. Architecture and design buffs will love the island for its historical importance, but also for the quality of the buildings like the famed Hotel Lambert. And of course, the views are unparalleled.

Jardin des Plants Paris Garden France Flowers

Jardin des Plantes Arrow

The Jardins des Plantes, or Botanical Gardens, is a popular park for families (members of all ages!) to visit. Not only are the trees and plants gorgeous to explore, but the garden is part of the National Museum of Natural History (Muséum Nationale d'Histoire Naturelle) so there are multiple exhibition spaces throughout, as well as a zoo. Built in 1898 for the World's Fair, the structure housing the Galerie de Paléontologie et d’Anatomie is also worth seeing for the historic architecture, and the kids will enjoy seeing the dinosaur skeletons inside!

Pont Alexandre III Paris Bridge

Pont Alexandre III Arrow

This ornate and elaborate bridge was inaugurated in 1900 to time with the Exposition Universelle in 1900, echoing the Beaux-Arts style of the Grand Palais and the Petit Palais it leads to. The name of the bridge commemorates the signing of the Franco-Russian Alliance of 1892, signed by Tsar Alexander III. During the day, the bridge is a major crossing between the Left and Right banks. On the Rive Droite, you alight at the Grand Palais and the Petit Palais, leading to the Champs-Élysees. On the Rive Gauche, you arrive at the grassy expanse of the Invalides. That means you'll pass a mix of tourists and locals day and night, many of whom stop and take photos.

Canal St. Martin Paris

Canal Saint-Martin Arrow

Canal Saint-Martin runs through one of the hippest neighborhoods in Paris. While the canal itself was commissioned in 1802 by Napoleon I to bring fresh water into the city, the vibe is distinctly contemporary with some of Paris's hottest restaurants, cafés and bars scattered alongside it. The contrast of the urban (think graffiti) with the placid (think canal tour boats) is one of the distinct charms of the walk.

Place de Furstenberg Paris walks

Place de Furstenberg Arrow

Built in the 6th century, Place de Furstenberg (technically a road, not a plaza) was originally attached to the Saint-Germain-des-Prés Abbey. It owes its current name and form to Cardinal Guillaume-Egon de Furstenberg, who initiated a renovation and extension to the Abbatial Palace in 1586. The main reason most tourists will find themselves in the Place de Furstenberg is if they are visiting the Musée National Eugène Delacroix. The famous French painter lived on the Rue de Furstenberg and his former home has been converted into a popular museum dedicated to his work.

Place des Vosges France Paris

Place des Vosges Arrow

Nestled in the side streets of the charming and hip Marais, the Place de Vosges is the oldest square in Paris (it was originally part of Henri II and Catherine de Medici's palace before being opened up to the public by Henri IV). Ringed on all sides by arched walkways and red brick buildings, the square has a symmetrical layout of trees leading into a central garden. You'll often find students picnicking or studying while small children run through the dusty paths. It's a perfect landmark to orient yourself around in the popular neighborhood.

Place de la Rpublique Paris

Place de la République Arrow

The Place de la République is now the largest public plaza in Paris, following a renovation that was finished in 2013. Originally known as the Place du Château d’Eau, the plaza took on its current rectangular shape under Haussmann. At 918 feet by 394 feet, the plaza is a large gathering place for Parisians thanks to family-friendly activities and a café with outdoor seating. While you walk to see the famous statue of Marianne (the female embodiment of the French Republic) in the center of the plaza, you'll see a mix of Parisians and tourists utilizing the space.

Quai Voltaire Paris France

Quai Voltaire Arrow

Walking along the Seine is always magical, but the Quai Voltaire on the Left Bank offers the extra-charming addition of les bouquinistes, the beloved booksellers that have wooden stands along the elevated sidewalk. Catch long views over the Seine towards the Louvre to the west and Notre Dame on the east, or turn away from the river to gaze at the buildings on the south side of the street, which include the art shop Sennelier, frequented by artists from Cézanne to Picasso.

Default

Marché Président Wilson Arrow

The Marché Président Wilson (a.k.a. Marché d'Alma) is the largest of the open air food markets in Paris, popping up in the 16th Arrondissement every Wednesday and Saturday. You'll find a mostly local crowd strolling through the stalls packed with every cheese, meat, fruit and vegetable to choose from, with many vendors having been at the market for years. Running alongside the market are several top museums if you want to combine art and food—spot cutting-edge art at the Palais de Tokyo and fashion at the Palais Galliera.

Parcs des Buttes Chaumont Paris

Parc des Buttes-Chaumont Arrow

Unlike most of the rest of the major parks in Paris, this is a natural space without any rigid formality. The 62-acre park, opened in 1867 as part of the Paris Universal Exposition, is built on a former quarry; there are rocky elevations to traipse up with amazing views of the city, including Sacre Couer in nearby Montmartre. And seeing as it's in the 19th arrondissement, you can expect an authentic Parisian experience, off the beaten tourist path—you'll likely need to take a quick metro or taxi ride to get there.

Place Trocadero

Place du Trocadéro Arrow

This is Paris on a grand scale. The Place du Trocadéro sits in the midst of the curving wings of the Palais de Chaillot, before giving way to the sloping Jardins du Trocadéro below. With perhaps the best view of the Eiffel Tower in the city (you are elevated directly across the Seine from it), you are constantly experiencing multiple historical eras at once. Stroll easily across the open place or take a meandering walk through the garden (more exercise if you reverse the order and work your way up.)

Rue SaintJacques Walks Paris

Rue Saint-Jacques Arrow

One of the oldest (if not the very oldest) street in Paris dates back to when it was a major artery of the Roman city Lutetia, well-traveled in medieval time by those making the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela in Galicia, which housed the remains of the apostle Saint James. Nowadays, Rue Saint-Jacques cuts through the Sorbonne, offering up plenty of student foot traffic throughout the day. You'll be excused for your own intellectual curiosity in looking at the buildings where many of France's first printing presses were located, a claim to fame for the street.

Galerie Vivienne Paris

Galerie Vivienne Arrow

Galerie Vivienne is a covered shopping arcade, originally built in 1823 and designed by architect François-Jean Delannoy. It remains open to the public for shopping in a mix of high-end boutiques (Jean-Paul Gaultier opened his first flagship in the arcade in 1986, for example). The glass and steel roof lets in sunlight down to the mosaic floors, making this a uniquely beautiful way to shop and stroll on your way to the nearby Palais-Royal .

Rue des Rosiers Paris Storefront

Rue des Rosiers Arrow

Rue des Rosiers was the main street of the Jewish portion of Paris (known in Yiddish as "Pletzl"). While the Marais is no longer a Jewish neighborhood, traces of the original inhabitants remain on this pedestrian street, now filled with chic boutiques sitting alongside traditional bakeries. Young Parisians flock to the stores for shopping outings, while tourists often come for strudel and bagels at longtime establishments like Sacha Finkelsztajn.

Square Rene Viviani Paris Exterior

Square René-Viviani Arrow

Square René-Viviani is a charming and intimate garden (named for a former Prime Minister of France), offering spectacular views of the nearby Notre Dame Cathedral. The star of the square is the oldest living tree in Paris, a black locust, said to have been planted in 1601 by Jean Robin, who was the herbalist and gardener to Henri III, Henri IV, and Louis XII. There is also a fountain, created by artist Georges Jeanclos, that tells the story of St. Julien but also stands to commemorate the Jewish children killed during the Vichy regime.

The French Revolution: A Murder Mystery Tour - Paris Walking Tour with Paris Muse

Tour Description

Return to 18th-century Paris and solve the mystery of a dramatic, real-life political assassination. Our original, interactive program was created by historians, but you’ll be too busy having fun with this “who dunnit” intrigue to realize how much you’re learning about the French Revolution.

As you immerse yourself in one of France’s most dramatic episodes, you’ll meet a cast of suspects, including an insubordinate literature hawker, a passionate actress, a prominent society lady, and a devout priest. Hearing their stories and motivations for the crime will give you a deeper understanding of how individuals experienced the French Revolution in a vivid, personal way.

You’ll visit historic places in Paris where the suspects lived and worked, including the Palais Royal, Louvre, Île de la Cité and Saint-Germain-des-Prés church, to gather visual evidence. Solving clues at each of these sites will eventually lead you to the real murderer. Along the way, you’ll see how Paris was forever changed by the social and political upheaval of the Revolutionary years.

Tour Highlights

Like A Good Mystery Novel

By the end of the tour I was completely stressed out—as if someone on the street might suspect me of not supporting the French Revolution and get me to a guillotine platform, but like a good mystery novel, I didn’t want it to be over. I loved it— this was really a great experience. It kept my interest, and helped me understand the make-up of society at that time. The guide Vanessa was excellent, very knowledgeable and is comfortable guiding kids and adults alike.

An Absolute Must-Do!

We traveled with 3 teenagers (17-19) and 4 adults. We started our trip off with the "French Revolution: A Murder Mystery Tour". This interactive experience was a perfect way to start our vacation: learning the facinating history around the French Revolution. Our tour guide, Amanda, was so personable, interesting and engaging - and she really knows how to bring history to life!...A complete HOME RUN.

Awesome for all ages

Be prepared to experience an incredible journey through French Revolution history. The tour guides who took us on this tour were some of the most awesome researchers and entertainers. It was a mixture of characters of the time as well as walking to the areas where you learned many clues to solve this crime. Awesome tour, actually for all ages, but especially teens!
