Why Kareri Lake Is A Must-Do Trek?

Nestled in the Dhaluadhar Range, Kareri Lake Trek in winter presents the wonderful winter-draped landscapes of Himachal Pradesh.  The trek is located near the town of Dharamshala in Himachal Pradesh, India and typically starts from the village of Kareri and leads to the pristine Kareri Lake. A trek to the lake in winter presents a truly magical and memorable adventure.

Deep in the winter, the Kareri Lake remains frozen and the meadows remain covered in blankets of snow. While the cold can sometimes be a challenge in the trek once you get through to the lake, it is a complete visual feast.

En route to the lake, you will cross dense forests of towering Oak and Pine trees. The trees are covered in powdery snow that sparkles and glistens as the rays of the sun strike the leaves. Walking through the forest seems like a mystical experience with snow all around.

Another great thing about trekking in the winter is that the trails are much less crowded as compared to the summers and such, you can bask in the serenity of the mountains.

How To Reach

It is essential for everyone to arrive at Dharamshala Bus Stand (ISBT) (10:00 am).

Once you reach the Dharamshala Govt. Bus Stand/ ISBT. TTH will take care of your further travel, which is also the starting point of the trek.

Reach by Bus.

Take overnight bus to Dharamshala from Delhi or Chandigarh, taking a bus from Chandigarh is the most ideal option.

• Chandigarh to Dharamshala Bus: 7 hours.

• Delhi to Dharamshala Bus: 12-13 hours is hectic and takes more time.

We always recommend going for the govt. Buses over the private ones outside the bus station as based on the experience we have found that there are very high chances of delay involved with private buses. Also, govt. Buses are always more reliable. Whichever bus you choose, just make sure to reach Dharamshala at least by 7-8 am positively.

Take a flight to Gaggal Airport.

The nearest airport is at Gaggal, about 13 kilometres away from Dharamshala. Tourists from other parts of India would find it easier to take a flight till Chandigarh and book a taxi for their onward journey to Dharamshala, which is about 237 kilometres away.

Reach by Train.

You can even come via train; Pathankot railway station is from where you can get direct buses to Dharamshala that is 85 km and takes 3hrs.

In the unlikely event that TTH cancels a trek prior to the scheduled departure date:

While it is extremely rare for TTH to cancel a trek, we understand that unforeseen circumstances or natural disasters may occasionally require us to do so before the scheduled departure. These circumstances could include continuous rain or snow, thunderstorms, snowstorms, landslides, floods, earthquakes, or any other natural calamity that poses a risk to the safety of our trekkers. Additionally, unforeseeable events such as local riots, curfews, pandemics, lockdowns, government orders, or any similar situations that compromise the safety of the trekking experience may also necessitate a cancellation.

In the event of such a cancellation, TTH will provide you with a voucher equivalent to the amount you paid for the trek. This voucher can be redeemed for any of our treks within the next year, allowing you to still enjoy an adventure with us at a later date.

The issuance of a voucher is not applicable in situations where you are required to descend from the trek for any reason. The trek leader may make the decision to send you down from the trek due to factors such as insufficient fitness level, symptoms of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), high blood pressure, exceeding the designated turn-around-time, health concerns, or if you are found smoking, drinking, or violating the rules set for the trek. In such cases, the provision of a voucher does not apply.

In the rare event that TTH shifts a trek:

We would like to emphasize that weather conditions in high-altitude areas are highly unpredictable and can undergo sudden changes at any time, irrespective of the day. Additionally, circumstances beyond our control, such as natural disasters, political unrest, pandemics, and lockdowns, may impact the feasibility of conducting a trek. In cases where we are unable to proceed with an event due to such circumstances that are beyond our direct control, we will make every effort to provide you with an alternative trek that is safer and more suitable.

In such situations, we will issue a voucher to offset the cost difference between the originally scheduled trek and the alternative trek. This voucher can be redeemed at any time within one year from the date of issue. Please note that a refund fee or reimbursement of the cost difference is not applicable in these cases.

How to choose the right trek?

Choosing the right trek for a beginner can be a bit overwhelming as there are many factors to consider such as distance, elevation gain, terrain difficulty, weather, and time of year. Here are some tips that can help you choose the right trek for a beginner:

1. Determine fitness level:  Assess the fitness level of the beginner to understand their physical capabilities. This will help you select a trek that is challenging but not too difficult.

2. Choose a well-traveled trail:  A well-traveled trail will have more amenities such as signposts, water stations, and shelter. It is also safer as there will be other hikers on the trail.

3. Consider the length of the trek:  For beginners, it is recommended to start with a shorter trek that can be completed in a day or two. This will help them get acclimatized to trekking and build their confidence.

4. Look for gradual elevation gain:  Choose a trek with a gradual elevation gain rather than steep ascents. This will make the trek easier and more enjoyable.

5. Check the weather:  Check the weather forecast before selecting a trek. Avoid treks during the monsoon season or winter when the trails can be slippery or dangerous.

6. Research the trail:  Read about the trail to get an idea of the terrain, altitude, and difficulty level. This will help you select a trek that is suitable for the beginner.

7. Consult with an expert:  If you are unsure about which trek to choose, consult our trek expert Mr. Nitin (+91 70600 59773) between 10 AM to 6 PM (Tuesday - Friday). Mr. Nitin will provide you valuable advice and guidance.

Overall, it is important to choose a trek that is enjoyable, challenging but not too difficult, and suitable for the beginner's fitness level and experience.

Can a beginner choose a tough trek?

It is not recommended for a beginner to choose a difficult Himalayan trek. Trekking in the Himalayas can be physically and mentally challenging, especially if you are not used to the high altitude, steep slopes, and rugged terrain. Choosing a difficult trek without the proper experience, fitness level, and preparation can be dangerous and put you at risk of altitude sickness, injury, and other hazards.

If you are a beginner, it is recommended to start with an easier trek and gradually build up your skills and experience. This will help you understand the challenges of trekking in the Himalayas, and also prepare you physically and mentally for a more difficult trek in the future. It is also important to choose a trek that matches your fitness level, experience, and interest.

What is the age limit for a beginner trekker?

There is no specific age limit for a beginner trekker. However, it is important to consider your physical fitness, health condition, and personal interests before embarking on a trek. Trekking in the Himalayas can be physically and mentally demanding, and requires a certain level of physical fitness and endurance.

If you have any pre-existing medical conditions or are above a certain age, it is recommended to consult with a doctor before embarking on a trek. It is also important to listen to your body and take breaks as needed during the trek to prevent exhaustion or injury.

If I am solo, can I join the trek in a group?

Yes, you can join the trek. We have fixed departure groups where you can simply book your trek and we will take care of curating a group.

How does my family get updated about my Trek?

Before you start the trek, it is recommended that you make all the necessary phone calls as during the trek you may or may not receive network coverage, once you come back to the Base Camp, you can reconnect with your family via phone once again. You can share your trek coordinator contact detail with your family members to get the latest updates about your trek batch.

How do I manage the negative temperatures on the trek at higher camps? Do I need special jackets?

Layer Up From Head To Toe Eat Full Meals, never sleep empty stomach You can keep warmee (if you’re more susceptible to cold). Use sleeping bag in right way and don’t leave free space in sleeping bag.

For upper body – Thermal layer – T-shirt (full-sleeves) – Fleece T-shirt (for extreme colds) – Fleece layer – Thick Jacket/Down Jacket – Waterproof or Windproof layer (outermost layer, when it is snowing or raining) - For Lower Body – Thermal layer – Hiking pants (normal) or Winter hiking pants

Based on how warm you feel you can skip any of the above layers. Your outer later should be windproof since it is windy at high altitude. The idea behind layering is that the more insulation you have the less cold you feel, and instead of wearing a very thick jacket if you wear multiple layers, your body will be better insulated against the cold.

What happens if some members of the team need to turn back before the summit?

No one is forced to go on. There is always enough staff to split the party according to need and regroup later at the camp. Most people have no trouble reaching the highest campsite. The Complete Guide to Kareri Lake Trek

The Kareri Lake trek, located in the Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh, takes you through lush sub-tropical pine forests. The forests are filled with chir and chilgoza pines, interspersed with broad-leaf species. They are also a host to the high-density birdlife, which is easily spotted (given the low canopies).

In the latter half of the trail, the forests open up to rocky grasslands along the lake-fed Nyund nallah which serves as both guide and refreshing companion. The forests are dotted with pines and shrubs. The lake itself is glacial and close to the snow line. All these combine to make the transition of vegetation zones with altitude easily visible on this trail.

Kareri Lake Trek is a lovely weekend adventure for people looking for options away from the more beaten Himachal trails like Kheerganga, Prashar lake, Triund, etc. Several campsites along the trail, along with convenient options for food, make this an ideal beginner-level DIY trail for trekkers.

The entire valley becomes snow-covered during the winter months, from December to February.

Short Itinerary

An untouched glacial lake one night’s journey from delhi.

  • Located high between the ranges of Dhauladhar is the perfect elliptical glacial lake, Kareri Dal.
  • A trek that takes you through lush subtropical forests and alpine grasslands

Detailed Itinerary

Trek details, day 1: ghera/kareri village to reoti.

  • Altitude: 5,905 ft to 8,038 ft
  • Time taken: 4.5 hours
  • Trek gradient:  mostly ascent, steep in some parts. Steep parts mostly have steps cut into the rock.
  • Terrain type:  mixed pine and broadleaf forests in the first half, grasslands interspersed with pine and deodar in the second half of the trail.
  • Water sources:  The waterfall is a good place to refill bottles. As well as several small springs along the trail.

Kareri village is known to most locals in Dharamshala. The trail goes through Kareri village and starts through mixed pine and broadleaf forests. Birds such as the black drongo and red-billed blue magpie are commonly seen. A little care is needed as the undergrowth is thick and the ground is littered with pine needles, making it a little slippery.

After about 15 minutes, the trail curves upwards towards a metal road. After joining the road, you walk along the road for about 10-15 mins until Nolli Bridge. The trail then curves off just before the bridge. This point is easily identifiable by a small shack that sells soft drinks and packaged food items. The trail then goes back into the forest.

You come across another shack after climbing some steps that ascend after crossing a small waterfall. The shack sells soft drinks and Maggi and is a good place to catch your breath before continuing to Revti (about 1.5 hours from the shack).

Not too long after this, a metal bridge provides an easy crossing of Nyund nallah . The forest opens up into grasslands along the banks of the nallah . A number of shepherds can be seen with their flocks on the slopes. Birds such as the warbler, redstart, and brown dipper are a common sight in and around the stream. A keen eye can spot Himalayan griffon vultures flying far overhead.

A 10-15-minute walk from the bridge brings you to the picturesque campsite on the banks of the nallah at Reoti. From here you get gorgeous views of the valley downstream. Camp here for the night, enjoy delicious home-style meals at the shack, and enjoy the comfort of flowing water nearby.

Landmarks : Shacks at regular intervals are good pointers. And the proprietors are happy to orient lost souls.

Stay options:  There is a campsite by the nallah at Reoti/Revti. You come across it about 10 minutes from the metal bridge at the first crossing point of the nallah .

There is adequate camping space, as well as a small shop that stocks packaged foods and drinks. It even serves hot tea and Maggi with the option of more wholesome meals ( dal -rice/vegetable curry-rice). It also rents tents (price varies depending on size) and sleeping bags (at Rs 100 per bag per night).

For the more alpine-minded trekkers, there are a few gaddi huts along the latter half of the trail (along the nallah ) which serve as warm, dry shelters for the night.

Day 2: Reoti to Kareri lake. Return to Kareri village

  • Altitude:  8,038 ft to 9,613 ft. Return to 5,905 ft
  • Time taken:  5.5 hours (1.5 hours to Kareri Lake)
  • Trek gradient:  Gradual ascent to Kareri Lake. Descent to Kareri village
  • Terrain type:  Grass meadows interspersed with boulders
  • Water sources: Small springs occur regularly in between the boulders along the stream, about 30 minutes after Reoti.

Set out early in the morning. The trail leading up from Reoti is paved for the large part. Small segments in the middle are unpaved but can be easily navigated between the boulders that litter the upstream banks of Nyund nallah .

The stream gradually picks up power as one approaches its source – Kareri lake. A shack/campsite about 1 hour after Reoti marks the last pitstop before Kareri lake. This is not counting a few gaddi huts along the way, built by the famous nomadic Gaddi shepherds of the Kangra region who use these as makeshift shelters.

A short, rocky crossing across the nallah leads to stone steps that take you up to the hilltop. Atop you find a temple dedicated to Shiva. On the other side of the hill (and already visible) is the beautiful glacial Kareri lake. Follow the trails along its banks to get closer to the water. The water is cold but the lake is shallow at the banks. The mountains of the Dhauladhar are in resplendent view on the opposite bank. You can see the trail to Minkiani Pass (4.5 km from the lake) between these behemoths of ice and grey rock.

Spend some time absorbing the beauty of the lake, then head back down to Reoti in time to pack up your tents (these can be safely left at the campsite) and descend to Kareri village before the sunsets.

Landmarks on the way: Small Shiva temple on the left side of the trail, 10-15 minutes after Reoti.

Plan Your Travel

The nearest road head for buses is Dharamshala. From Dharamshala, local buses ply to Ghera village from 8 am onwards. From Ghera, Kareri village (starting point of the trek) is about a 2-hour walk.

Alternatively, cabs are available from the Dharamshala bus stand to Kareri village. The cab charges are Rs 800-1000 one way for a group of 4-6 people, depending on the size of the group, the vehicle and your negotiating skills! Taking a cab is the better option if time is scarce; it reduces about 2 hours off the day’s travel and walking.

Alternative Indiahikes trek you can do

Kareri Lake is a wonderful trek. If you've been on a few treks before, you'll know how to prepare for the trek and navigate the trail. Not to say first-timers can't do the trek. However, if you're a newbie the process of organizing a trek by yourself might get a bit overwhelming. If you want to trek with your family or friend then you might not want the hassle of doing it. In such cases, we have a couple of great treks for you.

If you have a couple of days more in hand, Beas Kund is a great option. The starting point of the trek is Solang, just an hour's drive from Manali. That makes it very easy to access. If you're a beginner, it is the perfect trek with great views of biggest mountains of Manali. Moreover, you get to stand right at the base of the Pir Panjal Range.

Kareri Lake Trek – An Ultimate Guide for Backpackers

Shefali Joshi

Kareri Lake, also known as Kumarwah Lake, is situated in the Dhauladhar range, lying 9 KMs from Dharamshala. This shallow lake is a freshwater glacial lake at an elevation of 2,934 meters and makes the most picturesque location.

The water is crystal clear, and at most places, you’ll be able to spot the lake bed – which is a wonderful experience on its own. The reflection of the sky above is another beautiful gift this lake presents. Surrounded by beautiful mountain ranges, Kareri lake is quite a scenic outdoor thing to do.

The trek takes you through many waterfalls and gushing streams while also providing you with contrasting meadows. For more visual pleasure, there’s also shepherd villages that add to another depth of charm. As if that weren’t enough – the birds of the region will sing beautiful melodies along your trail.

Making for a lovely weekend adventure , Kareri lake is a beautiful, off-the-beaten-path trail.

Let's quickly dive into the details:

About Kareri Lake Trek

Taking you through lush green mountains where you can appreciate the sub-tropical pine forests to the fullest, you’ll be surrounded by beautiful bird species.

The water of Kareri lake is from glacial melting and water bodies from the Minkiani Peak in the Dhauladhar range. The stream – the outflow – is known as the Nyund river and will be your companion during the trail.

While this lake does not enjoy a huge tourism influx, I believe that is what makes this destination even more charming. Thanks to the abundant and extensive pastures near the lake, this place is a usual haunt for the Gujjars and Gaddis of nearby villages. On your trek, you’ll be able to enjoy and soak in the stunning dense conifers and some unique perpetual flowers.

Mcleodganj mountain range of Dhauladhars

Best time to visit Kareri

While the lake remains frozen for a major chunk of the year, the beauty and serenity in the winter months are also worth enjoying. However, if you’re looking for some tranquility in the winter – Kareri offers that to the max as well. March to July (i.e., pre-monsoon season) and then again from September to December (before frigid temperatures) makes for a wonderful weekend trek experience.

It is best to avoid the monsoon season as maneuvering the mountains during that period can be tricky.

How to reach Kareri Village

The Kareri village is situated around 27 km from Dharamshala . You can easily hail taxis from Dharamshala and even Bir, Palampur, and other main centers around the region. It will take you 1.5 hours to reach Kareri from Dharamshala. For reaching Dharamshala, there are multiple options available.

Dheeraj Sharma

Dheeraj Sharma

However, I must tell you, with any hill station you’re planning to visit, chances are, reaching by road is the most convenient option. However, train and air connectivity are available, even though a portion of your travel will need to be by road.

Follow my YouTube Channel & Ask Travel Questions

Gaggal, about 13 KMs from Dharamshala, is the closest airport. There are Spicejet and Air India flights from Delhi. However, it might be easier to fly into Chandigarh Airport – which enjoys better connectivity than this small Himalayan airport.

Chandigarh is at a distance of approximately 275 KMs from Dharamshala. You may hail a cab/ hire a self-driving car/ catch a bus from Chandigarh to Dharamshala. I will discuss all these options below!

The nearest railhead is Pathankot, 85 KMs away from Dharamshala. An overnight journey will get you here. Numerous trains are heading to Jammu & Kashmir has halts here. From Pathankot, you can hail a cab/ catch a bus from here.

Dharamshala is well connected to Delhi, and the journey will cover a distance of 525 KMs from ISBT. If you’re catching a bus – do take an overnight journey so that you have another entire day to enjoy your time in the Himalayas.

The journey from Delhi to Dharamshala will take approximately 13 hours. However, I must tell you that certain buses will take you to McLeod Ganj. This place is closer to the start of your trek.

Dharamshala - Kareri

Common Itinerary – Day by Day Plan

This two-day trek will take you through beautiful lush green mountains to a wonderfully secluded lake that provides the best views. Overall, the trek is fairly manageable – except for the last stretch to reach the lake, where the trail is not well defined. In terms of difficulty, I would rate this trek as easy-moderate.

Day 0 – Reaching the base – Kareri Village

Leave from Delhi late at night and cover the distance to Dharamshala overnight. This way, you’ll have plenty of time to explore around and get ready for the trek.

Day 1 – Kareri Village to Rioti Village

Today, it will take you 5 hours of trekking time to reach your camp for the night. The route is convenient as the local villagers have laid down steps and stones to define the path. However, do note, the trail does get quite steep in certain portions.

There will be a waterfall en route that is not only picturesque but also a great source of water. The trail is stunning and starts with pine and broadleaf forests. Also, a constant source of companionship, the region is famous for the many birds.

You will also be crossing the Nolli bridge, which is quite a highlight of the trek. At this bridge, there is a small shack, which makes for a good stop for some chai and Maggi! After the bridge, the trail enters the forests again.

Follow my YouTube Channel & Ask Travel Questions

Around halfway into the trek, you’ll be crossing another bridge over the Nyund river/nallah, eventually leading up to your camp for the night. There is a shack available here, as well, and food is a source of comfort. You can rent camping equipment including tents from the shacks here.

Do remember to carry your water bottles and keep the environment clean.

Day 2 – Rioti to Kareri Lake

You must begin early in the AM. It is going to be a long day and requires all the daylight that you can save up. In the second half of the trail, the deep forests will upon on to present rocky grasslands along the Nyund river (nallah?) – which will become your guide for the remainder of the route.

Given that the lake lies very close to the snow line, you’re in for some challenges during your final push period. Overall, you’ll be covering a distance of 4.5 KMs and should ideally take you 5ish hours, depending upon your fitness level. However, you’ll reach the lake in 1.5 hours of trekking. On the way to the lake, you’ll even spot a small Shiv temple, about 15 minutes after leaving Reoti.

Having reached the lake – you may plan on pitching tents here – however, it does get freezing here, and it might make sense to move back to Rioti as your base. Absorb the views, and spend quality time here before heading back to your base to wrap up your camps for the night (can be safely left behind).

Gajj is situated around half an hour from the lake and you may take another excursion to check the place out.

Day 3 – Back to the base, onwards and upwards

From Reoti, you can head on back to your start of the journey.

You should always carry your water bottle and refill it as many times as you need water. It will not only keep you hydrated always, but you will also help in saving the Himalayas from plastic garbage. Remember, every tiny step counts and your step in this direction can help save the Himalayas too !! 🙂 🙂

About Kareri Lake Trek

Kumarwah Lake or popularly called Kareri Lake is situated at an altitude of approximately 2,934 meters (9,626 feet) above sea level in the Dhauladhar range. The lake is fed by the melting snow and glaciers of the Dhauladhar range. The lake remains frozen during the winter months and transforms into a picturesque paradise during the summer and autumn seasons. The crystal-clear water of the lake reflects the surrounding snow-capped peaks and lush greenery, making it a visual delight for trekkers and nature lovers.

Trekking to Kareri Lake

A moderate difficulty level trek that offers a blend of adventure, natural beauty, and magnificent views, Kareri Trek is one of the most beautiful treks in the region. A total of approximately 26 km, the trek takes about 3-4 days to and from the Kareri village.

Day 1 of Kareri Lake Trek

The trek begins from Kareri village where your trek coordinator /organiser will assist you in taking necessary permissions. A quaint walk for about a kilometre or two passing through the forest of tall pine and oak trees will take you to the gate of Kareri Trek start point. You will cross small villages of the region and will get a glimpse of the lifestyle of local Himachali people primarily shepherds. This is the point where you need to take tickets and register yourself.

The trek starts with a gradual trail walking with several wooden bridges over gushing streams. As you cross through the lush green and dense forest, the trail gets steeper. The first pitstop or the campsite is Reoti village. We pitched our tents by the side of the Nyund River. After trekking for nearly 6 hours with steep inclines, steps and rocky paths we reached our campsite. Our

Our trek coordinators had kept our lunch ready. Piping hot rajma chawal, aloo sabzi and roti felt like a blessing after a strenuous hike on that cloudy day. It started to pour with hail-storms in no time and we decided to stay there instead of trekking further.

After lunch, we explored the nearby places and helped our porters who were hunting for wood to be used as fuel for cooking. It was an adventurous day, with hail storms, cloud bursts and thundershowers. It was dark by 4 pm. I was scared. By then to our surprise, our MasterChef got us some hot pakors and chai. What else you can ask in life?

We decided to retire early as we had not slept properly the previous night and the day trek was quite tiring. The night was extremely cold. I was wearing 3 layers and still was feeling cold. I had to reach out for more blankets and by God’s grace, we had spare ones.

Pro Tip: Nights are cold in the mountains. Always be prepared with your woollen clothes.

Day 2 at Kareri Lake Trek

After resting on day one, we were recharged and started afresh for the day 2 trek. We were advised by our porters and guide to shift the campsite and stay near Kareri Lake on the second night. The weather on day 2 was also gloomy and I didn’t want to take any chance of getting caught in hailstorms or flashing rainwater. We decided to trek a little more and do a round trip to the lake and back to the campsite. It was very strenuous but the amazing views, a wide range of Dhauladhars, Indrahara Pass, and Mun Peak kept us going. The breathtaking views, awesome weather and other trekkers motivated each other. The trek from Reoti village to Kareri Lake is about 5 km and can be completed in 4-5 hours. The views of the mesmerising lake abandoned Shiva temple, and towering Gajj Pass didn’t allow us to come back. After spending an hour or so and taking numerous photos we headed back to our campsite and retired after a long day.

Day 3 Return to Kareri Village

On the third day, you’ll retrace your steps back to Kareri village, descending through the beautiful forested trails and picturesque landscapes. The journey back will be equally rewarding, offering different perspectives of the magnificent Dhauladhar range. It appeared to long route to descend but we managed to reach it in 4 hours just before lunchtime. After a good hot water bath, we were served smoking hot rice and daal with some vegs.

The difficulty level of the Kareri Lake trek

While Kareri Lake and its trail offer some of the best picturesque and breathtaking views, do not underestimate the difficulty level of the trek. The trek is considered to be of moderate difficulty level and is suitable for both amateurs and seasoned trekkers. The trek involves ascending and descending through hilly terrain, dense forests, boulders, rocky terrain, crossing streams, and occasional steep sections.

The trek starts from Kareri village at around 1,800 meters (5,900 feet) above sea level and reaches an altitude of approximately 2,934 meters (9,626 feet) at Kareri Lake. It usually takes 3-4 days to cover a total distance of 26 km to complete the trek.

How to Reach Kareri

Kareri is a beautiful lake nestled in a quaint village Kareri, is just 26 km away and takes about an hour to reach from Dharmashala. You can reach Dharamshala either by road, rail or by air.

Kangra is the nearest airport connecting to most of the major cities of India. Even though it is a small airport, you will find taxis to reach Kareri. Alternatively, you can take a state road transport bus to reach the village.

Dhamarmshala is the closest major railway station and is well-connected to the major cities of North India. I took a night train from Delhi and reached Dharamshala by 4 am.

Travelling by road is always the best way to reach the last mile. Taxis and state-run buses are easily available from Delhi, Chandigarh, Amritsar, Manali etc to reach Dharmshala. Private taxis and local buses are available easily to reach Kareri.

Best Time to Visit

Being in Himachal Pradesh, Kareri is a picturesque trek with breathtaking views. The weather throughout the year is mostly pleasant and favourable to trekking conditions. However, monsoons can be avoided as the path becomes slippery and risky for trekking. There are hardly any stay options during the course, staying in tents during monsoon is not advisable. Winters are challenging for beginners as it snows heavily.

Hence, the Kareri Lake trek is best undertaken between April to June and September to November is the best time to trek. The weather conditions are favourable to trekking and are pleasant.

Accommodation in Kareri Lake Trek

Kareri Village serves as the starting point for the trek, and you may find a few guesthouses or homestays here. These accommodations offer basic amenities like a bed, blankets, and meals. Staying in Kareri village the night before starting the trek is a good idea to acclimatize and begin the trek fresh the next day.

Being a rustic trail, there are no homestay accommodations available on the route. You have to pitch your tent or the trek organiser will assist you in doing so. It is safe to have a tent along the trek route, ensure you do not leave any traces.

Takeaway / Tips Kareri Lake Trek

To make the most of your Kareri Lake trek and preserve the natural beauty of the region, kindly remember the following points:

  • Physical Fitness- Although the trek is for 3-5 days, it is considered moderate to difficult. It is crucial to maintain good physical fitness to comfortably complete the trek.
  • Pack Light- Carry only the basic and essentials and travel light. As the trek is not very popular and commercial there are very few porters available in the region.
  • Drinking water is sourced from streams and rivers. Carry water purification tablets or filters. Though villagers consider the flowing water safe for drinking.
  • Follow the trail- If you are planning to trek on your own, follow the trail as there are very high chances of getting lost in the wilderness. It might also disturb the local fauna and flora.
  • Always carry rainwear, the rains are unpredictable in the mountains.
  • DO NOT LITTER- the thumb rule for any hikes/treks – Do not litter the mountains and bring back all your trash.

The Kareri Lake trek is a perfect escape for experienced and amateur trekkers to immerse themselves in the serenity of the Himalayas. The trek not only rewards you with stunning vistas but also connects you with nature to discover the simple joys of life amidst the pristine wilderness.

Located at an elevation of nearly 9,679 ft, the scenic and eye-catching Kareri Lake is a soul-

stirringly beautiful lake located in the Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh. If you wish to

skip a couple of days from your busy and monotonous routine then the Kareri Lake Trek

has got to be the perfect getaway for you. The trek is short and extremely wholesome with

lots of opportunities in its ambit that will allow you to witness natureâ??s wilderness like

never before.

Kareri Lake Trek is also considered as one of the most adventurous and breathtaking

alpine treks in the state of Himachal Pradesh. The trek takes you through beautiful

landscapes amidst mighty mountains, through unexplored avenues with hundreds of alpine

trees accompanying you. Besides numerous gushing streams and breathtakingly beautiful

green meadows, Kareri Lake Trek also takes you through overwhelming and aesthetic

remote villages. All in all, the trek offers peace, tranquility, aesthetic pleasure and is a giant

storehouse of interesting adventurous surprises. Additionally, this trek can prove to be a

paradise for bird watchers, so if you have an affinity for bird watching, be sure to carry your

camera along with you. The areas around the Kareri Lake are filled with pines and shrubs

that make this place a perfect habitat for a variety of birds that very often seek shelter here.

The latter half of the Kareri Lake Trek introduces you to a vast variety of terrains, steep

ascends, wooden bridges and many river crossings that add value to your overall

experience here.

Kareri Lake, also known as Kareri Dal or Kumarwah Lake, is situated at an elevation of

9,626 ft above the mean sea level.  It is situated at a distance of 27 km from Dharamshala in

the Kangra region of Himachal Pradesh. The Kareri Lake is a freshwater glacial lake that is

indeed breath-taking and refreshing to admire. The crystal clear water of the lake

spectacularly reflects the vast sky and is truly an epitome of beauty. Surrounded by lush

green subtropical pine forests, the lake is famous for a surprisingly great variety of birdlife.

With changing seasons the temperature around the Lake also changes throughout the year.

While the temperature on a usual day in summer can sometimes rise up to 43 degree

Celsius, in winter however, the temperature falls down to around 9 degrees during the day

and about -10 degrees during the night. Since, the Kangra region in Himachal Pradesh

mostly receives heavy rainfall every monsoon season, condition in the region during

monsoon become very unfavorable for trekking. Most routes tend to become slippery, the

probability of landslides increases and it becomes quite chaotic overall.

It is the spring season which proves to be the most favorable period for the Kareri Lake

Trek. During this period, you can also enjoy flora and fauna in their full bloom which adds

beauty to the already breathtaking views. Indeed, this season offers unbelievable scenic

views, refreshing stretches of greenery, and overwhelmingly exquisite pictures of the

surroundings.

The Kareri Lake trek stretches across 27 km of distance and can be covered in three days

by any averagely fit person. The topography, altitude and do-ability of this trek make it

suitable for first time trekkers as well. It is relatively easier and has a great deal of

adventure to best suit the interest of first timers. On your way upwards, you will come

across dense forests of pine and oak trees, streams with gushing crystal clear water, a wide

range of wildflowers as well as a variety of birdlife. The trek begins with a leap into forests

of pine and broadleaf but as you move forward; you will come across grasslands, pine and

deodar trees and many wild trees that are indeed breathtaking. You will also find waterfalls

and milky white streams occasionally greeting you on your way upwards. Initially, the

route appears to be easy and quite doable but as you progress, the trail gets steeper.

However, the real adventure usually starts from Dharamkot. Dharamkot is just 2 km away

from McLeod Ganj, which is a small urban destination in Dharamshala.

As much as we prepare for trips, the probability of risks can never be brought to nil.

Nonetheless, calculating probable risks and keeping prepared for unforeseen situations is

the best that we can do in our capacity as humans. Every trek that reaches out to high

altitudes opens up the possibilities of altitude sickness which is very common amongst

trekkers, especially the first timers. Symptoms such as general discomfort, nausea and

headache are very commonly observed in cases of altitude sickness. Although, it is very

unlikely to experience altitude sickness on the Kareri Lake trek, nonetheless if you come

across these symptoms or start experiencing intolerable discomfort, it is best to inform

your guide/trek leader at the earliest. Trek leaders are usually very well experienced to

identify the seriousness of your situation and provide the best possible healthcare at that

moment. Sometimes even weather conditions fluctuate with the blink of an eye. Despite

predictions, nature can always come up with surprises and the weather can go haywire.

Unexpected rainfall, snowfall or hailstorm can sometimes show up uninvited and paint the

sky grey. In such cases, it is recommended to follow the instructions of your trek

leaders/guides. They may even ask you to return to a lower base for safety purposes.

Subsequently, alien terrains can be tricky to walk over, risks of minor injuries such as

bruises and leg sprains etc, even though avoidable, are present nonetheless. Sometimes

fractures can also occur if youâ??re savage and not very careful. However, trek leaders are

usually trained to handle emergencies. With the help of a fully-equipped first aid kit, most

trek leaders quite successfully take care of minor injuries. And as far as serious injuries are

concerned, patients are usually transported on a stretcher to the nearest medical centre.

Best Time for Kareri Lake Trek

Both for the beginners as well as the experienced ones, the best period for the Kareri Lake

Trek is between the month of May to July and from September to November. During this

period, the weather usually remains pleasant and ideal for trekking. The temperature also

remains between 8 degrees to 20 degree Celsius which is a very favorable spectrum. From

late-July to the end of August, trekkers might experience rain with thunderstorms. As the

Kareri Lake is situated at an altitude of 9,679 ft above the mean sea level, the lake remains

frozen from early December to April due to extreme weather conditions. The temperature

stays at the sub-zero level and even through trekking during this period is least preferred;

it turns out to be quite gratifying and adventurous. So, if you love admiring snow clad

mountains and viewing milky white stretches of snow around yourself then trekking

during the winter season has got to be your sport. However, it is advised to either trek

during the pre-monsoon season or before the period of extreme cold temperatures.

available to Dharamshala from major cities like Delhi, Manali, Shimla, Chandigarh and

Jalandhar etc.

I chose (after a lot of research) Trekmunk for my first trek - The Hampta Pass and Chandratal Trek. And I am so really glad I did so. The trekker needs to only focus on the trek and the beautiful landscape around him/her. The rest of everything is taken care of by Trekmunk from day 1 till the end of the trek. Scrupulously managed logistics; no compromise on safety and security; experienced, intelligent and knowledgeable trek leaders; scrumptious meals; contingency and backup plans; etc. make Trekmunk an ideal choice to go trekking with. My trek was lead by Ashish Pathania, Prashant Reddy and Sanjay Thakur. The three are were thorough professionals. They were jolly, very helpful, experienced, knowledgeable, organized, and needless to say polite yet strict when needed. They played the most important roles in making sure our overall trekking experience was a wonderful one. Thank you Trekmunk for one of the most beautiful experiences I have had till date. Will see you guys soon.

No words for the bike trip from Srinagar to Leh. One should experience it to feel it and all this because of the management of Trekmunk especially Mohit and Harshit whose efforts even made the hardest of the ride exciting adventurous and above all safe. Although some hindrances which are quite common like bike issues and medical problems arose with our co-riders, I liked the way these two guys handled it dexterously. I went with one of my best friends and came with a lot more and the trip turned out to be memories that can be cherished for a lifetime. Thanks, Team Trekmunk for giving me a wonderful experience. Kareri Lake Trek – How to Plan a Trip to this Hidden Jewel

kareri lake trek

I was on a trip to Dharamshala and Mcleodganj recently and also spent a couple of days in the tiny hippie village of Dharamkot . On one of the days when I had no plans, on the recommendation of an Israeli tourist, I decided to attempt the lesser-known Kareri Lake trek. The experience turned out to be one of my most memorable ones and the views were the best I got anywhere else in Mcleodganj. I am sharing below my experience of the trek as a travel guide for anyone who is interesting in attempting it.

I say ‘lesser-known’ because only a handful of people visiting Mcleodganj travel this way. This is in fact surprising because Mcleodganj is known as a trekking destination. The Triund Lake trek, snowline , Laka Glacier, and several other trails attract tourists all year long. With such an influx of trekking enthusiasts, one would expect a lot of people exploring Kareri Lake as well but that is not really the case.

So if you were thinking about going on a short, easy to handle, unexplored, not crowded, and highly scenic trek, then look no further. The trek to Kareri Lake will greatly serve the purpose.

Quick Navigation

About Kareri Lake

The entire Himalayan region is marked with numerous lakes. Some of these lakes are large and famous whereas some others are small and not many people know about them. Some of the lakes can be reached easily while a few others will require several days of serious trekking to get to.

One common thing among all of them, however, is that they are all equally beautiful. Even the smallest of the Himalayan lakes are a giant in beauty. Kareri Lake is one of such.

This tiny body of water sits in the Dhauladhar range at a distance of about 11 kilometers from Dharamshala. It is a glacial lake fed by the water from the melting snow of the Dhauladhar peaks . At an elevation of 2934 meters, it is quite close to the snowline and remains completely frozen from early December to March–April.

The fresh water of the lake is a favorite among the local gaddi shepherds for grazing their livestock. A few house-like structures made out of stone can be seen near the lake that are used by the shepherds as accommodation when they are in the area. The Lake itself is actually named after the Gaddi Village of Kareri, located about 9 kilometers away. There is also a temple here, on a hillock overlooking the lake, dedicated to Lord Shiva.

About Kareri Lake Trek

Kareri Lake is known as a trekking destination. The entire trek can easily be completed in three days and takes you through a beautiful pine forest. The outflow of the lake is known as Nyund nallah which also serves as a trekking guide. You can just follow the stream of the water all the way to its source.

The initial part of the lake is through a forest and the latter half in rocky grassland. There are a few campsites along the trail that you can even stay at for the night. Kareri Lake also serves as a base for Minkiani Pass and Baleni Pass treks for people wanting to trek further into the Dhauladhar Mountains.

What really makes the trek worth the effort is the beautiful scenery on the way and around the lake. It is a perfect destination for beginners and the only thing required is that you have a decent level of fitness. It is also great for people who want to avoid beaten treks like Triund, Kheerganga or Prashar Lake but do not have time to trek for several days deep into the Himalayas.

How to reach Kareri Lake

In order to reach Kareri Lake, you will first have to reach Dharamshala or Mcleodganj, then go to Kareri Village and finally trek up to the lake. The journey hence will have to be broken down into three parts.

None of the options are too difficult though. Depending on your own preference, you can either travel by your privately owned vehicle, catch a Bus, board a flight, or travel by train. More details are provided below.

Let us first discuss how to get to Dharamshala (or Mcleodganj) and then I will explain the journey to Kareri Lake from there. If you were traveling by your own vehicle, the journey will be as mentioned below. To explain the route, I will assume Delhi as your starting point.

Delhi – Karnal – Ambala – Rupnagar – Anandpur Sahib – Amb – Ranital – Kangra – Dharamshala

This entire journey will be about 470 kilometers, depending on where you started from in Delhi. The travel time will be anywhere between 10 to 12 hours. The condition of the road is smooth all the way till Dharamshala with a few bad stretches in between.

You do not have to enter Chandigarh , in case you were wondering why that is missing from the route. After Ambala, you can take the Chandigarh Bypass and go straight to Rupnagar without entering the city. This will save you at least one hour of travel time.

Pathankot is the nearest railway station, about 90 kilometers from Dharamshala. This is a major railway station and is very well connected to the rest of the country by several trains. All the trains to Jammu halt here so you can either look for a direct train to Pathankot or anyone going to Jammu.

Dharamshala has its own airport, known as Gaggal Airport. It is about 15 kilometers out of Dharamshala and has connecting flights from Delhi only. If Gaggal was not a convenient option, then you can look for a flight to Chandigarh and travel to Dharamshala from there.

From both Gaggal and Chandigarh, you can easily get a taxi from the airport itself to get a drop at Dharamshala or Mcleodganj. If you were doing this, then staying at Mcleodganj will be a better option because it is closer to Kareri Village.

Both Dharmshala and Mcleoganj are among the top tourist destinations in all of Himachal. HRTC operates several buses from all nearby cities for Dharamshala, both ordinary and Deluxe.

If you were coming from Delhi, you can get a bus easily from ISBT Kashmere Gate. An overnight bus will be a better option because then you can sleep through the journey.

Direct buses to Mcleodganj are also easily available which will be better than boarding one for Dharamshala.

How to reach Lake from Dharamshala or Mcleodganj

Now that you have arrived in Dharamshala or Mcleodganj, the next part of the journey is to reach the Kareri Village, also known as Kareri Khas. This is the starting point of the trek and at a distance of 25 kilometers from Dharamshala. From Kareri Village, you will reach Rioti (also known as Liyoti) which is the base camp for the trek. The next day, you will trek to Kareri Lake and return to Dharamshala by evening. More details are provided further below.

Kareri Lake Trek Itinerary

Mentioned below is a complete and detailed trek itinerary.

Delhi to Dharamshala / Mcleodganj – Day 1

This will be the first day of the journey as explained above. Staying at Mcleodgnj will be a better option than Dharamshala.

Dharamshala / Mcleodganj to Rioti Base Camp – Day 2

On this day, you will first drive up to Kareri Khas. This will take about an hour and a half at most. If you were traveling by public transport, you can either book a private taxi or find a shared one. If you were traveling by bus, it will drop you at Ghera Village, about 4 kilometers before Kareri. After that, you will either have to trek the remaining distance or hitchhike.

From Mcleodganj, you can get a cab for Kareri for Rs. 1500 easily.

From Kareri, you will start trekking for Rioti. Total trekking distance will be about 6 kilometers and will take about 5 hours easily. The trail is mostly all uphill with a few steep ascents in between. For most of your way, you will be walking through a dense forest of Pine and Deodar.

There is also a large waterfall on the way. Nylund nallah will remain with you on the trek.

You will come across a few shacks/tea stalls on the way where you can take a break and get something to eat. I will however recommend carrying your own snacks if possible. Everything at these small shacks is crazy-expensive.

The forest trail will finally open along the banks of the nallah up into grasslands. You will arrive at Rioti Base Camp and stay here for the night in tents. There is a campsite here near the nallah. If you were carrying your own gear then you can self-camp as well.

The total gain in altitude will be from 1475 meters (4839 ft) at Dharamshala or 2,082 meters (6830 ft) at Mcleodganj to 2,450 meters (8000 ft) at Rioti.

trekking to kareri lake

Rioti Base Camp to Kareri Lake – Day 3

The first half of the trek until Rioti is through a forest. After Rioti, you will be walking through a highly scenic grass meadow. You will be walking along the Nyund nallah all the way to the lake which will make the trek even more scenic. There will also be several small springs en route.

After Reoti, the trail is paved for the large part. It is very easy to navigate and will end at the Shiv Temple build at the hilltop. The lake is located on the other side of the hill and you will have to follow the downhill trails to get close to the water.

The walk is uphill still but very easy to handle. The gain in altitude will be very gradual to 2950 meters (9650 ft) highest at the lake.

I will recommend getting an early start on this day because you will also need to return to the base camp for an overnight stay.

Rioti Base Camp to Dharamshala / Mcleodganj – Day 3

You will return to your hotel from Rioti the same way that you reached there. For people traveling by public transport, you may have to make arrangements for a cab to travel back from Karegi Village to Dharamshala.

Another way to do this trip is to camp at Kareri Lake itself for the night. There are no existing campsites available there so you will have to do self-camping. If you were trekking with a tour guide or agency, you can ask them to make the arrangements for you.

There is a Dhaba near the lake where you can eat if you were self-camping . In fact, you can also stay at the Dhaba.

If you had an additional day, I will recommend camping at the lake for a night. This will be a great experience in itself and it will also reduce your trekking distance on Day 2. If not, you will have to come back to Rioti Campsite for Night stay.

If you were not carrying your own camping gear , then you can actually rent it from Reoti. There is a shack here near the campsite that offers tents and sleeping bags on rent.

There are a few dhabas near the start point of the trek, near a large white bridge that you will need to cross. These Dhabas too provide camping and trekking equipment on rent. You can in fact also get a guide for the trek if you needed one.

Another option that you can choose to opt for is the Gaddi shepherd huts that are available at several places along the route. These can also provide shelter for the night. There are a few huts near the lake as well if you want to crash there but will still need sleeping bags for that.

You should carry your own water bottle that you can refill from the waterfall and the water stream

There is another route to the lake that starts from Dharamkot. But your trekking distance will then increase significantly. You will first have to walk to Kareri Village and then to Reoti from there.

Best time to visit Kareri Lake

The best time to visit Kareri Lake is April to June and October to November. But one of the good things about Kareri Lake is that it remains accessible throughout the year. That is right. You can visit here for all 12 months. It is also considered among the best winter treks in Himachal.

With that being said, the best season to go here will be of Spring and Summer. This is when the weather remains enjoyable with moderately warm days and pleasantly cool nights. From Mid April to late June is when most of the trekkers plan to attempt Kareri Lake.

You can do a winter trek as well should keep in mind that the region receives quite a bit of snow and the trek can sometimes get closed as well. It would be best to inquire about the weather in advance.

Another recommendation will be that during winter, you should go with a local guide and not attempt on your own.

Monsoon season is not a good time at all to trek to Kareri. During July and August, monsoon can wreak havoc in this region. Sometimes it can rain non-stop for days and will make it impossible for you to go trekking.

Below are some commonly asked questions about Kareri Lake.

1. Where is Kareri Lake?

Kareri Lake is located near the towns of Dharamshala and Mcleodganj in Himachal Pradesh.

2. How to reach Kareri Lake by Car

If you were traveling in your own car, the best option would be to drive all the way to Kareri Khas and start trekking from there.

3. When does it snow at Kareri Lake?

The lake and its nearby area start receiving snow in December. The snowfall usually lasts until March but sometimes it can continue to snow until April as well.

4. Is Kareri Lake Trek Difficult?

No, it is not difficult at all. Even a complete beginner can easily complete the trek. The only condition is that you have a decent level of fitness and are able to walk 5-10 kilometers at a stretch.

5. Do you need a Guide for Kareri Lake

I did the trek on my own and everyone I came across was traveling all by themselves. You do not need a guide in the tourism season as the trail is well marked and easy to find. There will also be other trekkers, villagers, and gaddi shepherds that you can seek help from.

In the off-season, however (November to March) I will strongly advise going with a local guide.

Things To Carry

Hunting For Offbeat Weekend Getaways? Here's A DIY Guide To Kareri Lake Trek From Delhi

Photo of Disha Kapkoti

The locals of Kareri Village have a certain fascination with the word 'crazy'. The Gaddi shepherds of this region have gradually picked up bits of some hipster jargon from travellers who reach this north-western end of the Kangra district for short weekend hikes during their stays in Dharamshala, Mcleodganj or Dharamkot. Now when you ask these wandering shepherds questions about the Kareri Lake trek, or the weather, they will quickly pull out the word they love off the cuff and say, " Crazy hai, crazy ."

Unlike most of the short hikes around Kangra, the Kareri Lake trek still remains lesser known. My research before the trek included reading a few blogs online that told us that a classic Himalayan stone trail marks the way to the lake, but it's broken in parts.

Several trekking outfits organise a 3-day Kareri Lake trek, but if you're familiar with the mountains and are prepared for the uncertain weather conditions, Kareri is a complete DIY (do-it-yourself) trail. To help you plan a weekend trek to Kareri, here's a short itinerary and tips that I picked up during my experience at Kareri last week.

Complete itinerary to Kareri Lake trek

Take a bus to Dharamshala from Delhi. Night buses that take you to this hill town of Himachal during the early morning hours are ideal.

Kareri Rest House

You can choose to take a bus or taxi to Kareri Village. Keep note that there are only two buses that leave for Kareri Village from Dharamshala in the morning. Taxis run all day long from the Ex-Service Men Taxi Stand at Dharamshala and leave you at Kareri Village in two hours.

Accommodation at Kareri Village : Those who wish to spend a night at Kareri Village can stay at the Forest Rest House. There are hardly any shops here, so you will have to buy all that you need from Ghera, a village enroute Kareri from Dharamshala. Contact number for Kareri Forest Rest House: 097365 25486.

Walking distance from Kareri Village to Reoti: 7km

You can easily start the trek the same day to Reoti, the first pitstop on this trail. Start the trek from behind the Forest Rest House from where there is a 3km paved road taking you to a bridge that connects to the nearby village of Nolli. Do not cross the bridge, but follow the trail that descends down the bridge. On this route you walk along the river side for almost 2km and the trail then diverges and the steep ascent begins. After almost 2km you have to crossover to the left side of the river jumping over the big river boulders. From there onwards, the trail will be visible again, and this broken stone trail will take you to a small shack that serves as a resting spot. Reoti is almost 4km from here and the trail is not steep, but quite narrow with the valley view on your right.

Accommodation at Reoti : A small shop at Reoti also provides tents, but it is best to contact the shop from Kareri Village before starting the trek to check for availability of tents and sleeping bags. This shop at the Reoti campsite also has provisions for dinner, drinking water and snacks.

The Reoti Campsite.

Kareri Lake Camping

Walking distance from Reoti to Kareri Lake: 6km

Start your trek to the lake and remember to stock up on snacks and water for the hike ahead for the next day. The stone trail continues from Reoti and the beautiful vista of the fresh Nyund river unfurls towards your left. The trail is a mix of steep stone pathways and clear green meadows by the riverside. Crossover to the other side of the river, jumping over the river boulders right at the end of the trail. Walk up the last hillock beyond which lies the majestic Kareri Lake.

Accommodation at Kareri Lake : If you're carrying your own tent, you can pick a location of your choice around the lake to pitch the tent. Usually hikers camp near the Shiv Shakti Temple, since the only shop here has provisions for food and water. To save yourself from the harsh winds at night, you can also pitch a tent inside one of the vacant Gaddi shelters near the temple.

Walking distance from Kareri Lake to Kareri Village: 13km

The next day follow the same trail all the way down to Kareri Village. You can choose to have breakfast at Kareri Lake or at Reoti, but do not continue the hike from Reoti without a heavy meal. This downhill walk should not take you more than 3 to 4 hours and there are at least 3 to 4 shacks where you can refill water bottles and grab some snacks.

Guides and tents

Tents on rent and local guides can be arranged at Sunrise Cafe, the only shack at Kareri Village. A guide can accompany you on the trail ahead if you're not confident on walking ahead alone. You can rent tents at Kareri Village, and either they will be made available to you at Reoti, or you will have to carry them yourself till your destination. The same tents can be carried all the way to Kareri Village ahead on the next day.

Tips to remember

* The weather here is quite unpredictable. Always carry your rain gear and time your hike, especially when you're in Kareri during the monsoon.

* If you plan to stay at Kareri Village for more than a day, make arrangements for food and water from Ghera.

* ATMs can be accessed only in Dharamshala and there are no provisions to withdraw cash ahead on the route.

* Avoid drinking river water. You must carry 2 litres of water every day. The bottles can be refilled from the shacks midway.

* You can make arrangements for a taxi back to Dharamshala at Sunrise Cafe in Kareri Village. It's best to enquire and make prior arrangements for return taxis before starting the trek.

There are alternate routes for the trek that start from Ghera and another route that takes you via Nolli village. But apart from the initial detours, the trail after the Nolli bridge remains the same.

If you took an alternate route to the lake, give us all information you can in the comments section below and tell us all about your tips and tricks for the Kareri Lake trek.

Brief description.

Kareri Lake (also known as Kumarwah Lake) is a high altitude, shallow, freshwater lake south of the Dhauladhar range near Dharamshala. The entire trail of the trek is very varied and beautiful. It is at an altitude of 2934 M. There is a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva and Shakti on a hilltop overlooking the lake. A few gaddi kothis are present on the other side of the lake, an area which is used by the gaddis as a grazing ground for their animals. The lake remains frozen from early December to March-April. Kareri Lake serves as a base for trekking further into the Dhauladhar and onward to Chamba and Bharmour via the Minkiani Pass (4250m) and Baleni Pass (3710m). It is an ideal weekend getaway trek to this perfect elliptical glacial lake. It can be trekked by beginners and experienced trekkers alike. It is easy enough to be trekked by yourself without a guide.

Visiting Oranienbaum and Lomonosov

Oranienbaum is perhaps the least visited of St. Petersburg's suburban palaces, despite the rich and unique treasures it has to offer. This can partly be attributed to the decades of neglect that have left most of the buildings in critical condition and allowed the park to be overrun by nature. Thankfully, the estate has now come under the auspices of Peterhof's management, and a massive renovation programme is already underway. For the next several years, however, it will be necessary to check which parts of the park and which buildings are currently open to the public.

Oranienbaum is only 12km along the coast from Peterhof, so it is possible for those with some stamina to combine the two in a single daytrip. A marshrutka minibus (K-348) connects the two estates. From St. Petersburg it is possible to take a minibus (K-300) from Avtovo Metro Station, or suburban trains from Baltiskiy Station. Either way, the journey takes a little under one hour.

Oranienbaum Park

Located on a slight incline, this pretty landscaped park is slowly being restored to its former glories, and contains a number of unusual architectural features.

Grand Menshikov Palace

This superbly elegant baroque palace was originally built for Peter the Great's closest adviser, and was the only suburban palace to survive World War 2 intact.

Chinese Palace

The favorite retreat of Catherine the Great, this small but exquisitely designed neoclassical villa has superbly restored interiors in "Oriental" style.

Palace of Peter III

This modest two-storey building was built for the future Peter III, and was the centre of Petershtadt, his peculiar model fortress of which he styled himself the Commandant.

A Guide to Alto Adige, the Alps’ Most Underrated Winter and Wine Destination

It took a few days to get my bearings in Alto Adige. As the northernmost part of Italy , the region, also called South Tyrol, straddles the Austrian border but is proudly autonomous. I ordered negronis during aperitivo hour to which I was thanked with “danke” ; I craved pasta come dinner, but was introduced to a regional dumpling called knödel ; and wineries are interchangeably referred to as the Italian cantina or German kelleri . It was all fascinating and added to the singularity of this lesser-traversed region of a country better known for its rolling hills, pristine beaches, and world-famous historical sites.

The region’s overlooked charm is somewhat surprising, considering its prime location in the foothills of the Dolomites, a UNESCO World Heritage mountain range in the northern Italian Alps. Perhaps most recognized for some of the world’s best skiing, the five main cities in the region—Bolzano, Meran, Breixen, Sterzing, and Bruneck—all situate you within an hour of 10,000-foot peaks.

Yet Alto Adige is undoubtedly a year-round destination, with unparalleled access to the natural world. There’s mountaineering, biking , and nearly 10,000 miles of signposted hiking trails that meander you through medieval castles, working farms, and high-Alpine routes. For the less active, the region incorporates mountain herbs and botanicals into its coveted spa culture. And no matter the time of year, there’s always wine: Alto Adige contributes one percent to Italy’s wine production, including ancient grapes that are a treat to discover on a vineyard tour or traditional farmhouse inn tasting.

Here’s how to explore Alto Adige to the fullest.

Where to Stay

Considered the gateway city to the Dolomites, Bolzano is the best destination for a year-round stay. On the outskirts of the medieval town center rises Castel Hörtenberg , a five-star hotel hosted in a restored Renaissance-era castle. The 24-room property radiates opulence through its preserved character with stucco ceilings, original stone walls, exposed beams, and cherished frescoes. There’s plenty of culture, art, and history within the castle’s walls but also at your doorstep; the property is within walking distance to Bolzano’s Piazza Walther, its main square, and for those guests seeking epicurean experiences, the best of Bolzano’s restaurants.

For a more bucolic stay, the 16-room inn at Gasthof Kohlern positions you at the top of Kohlern mountain, above Bolzano. The authentic farmhouse inn features wooden furniture and individually designed rooms that are surrounded by lush forest in the summer and snowy peaks in the winter. Despite its homage to tradition, the inn doesn’t skimp on luxury; there’s a heated infinity pool and a cutting-edge spa, complete with a mountain-view sauna. The onsite restaurant is also revered for its genuine Tyrolean fare, so you never have to venture far for an exquisite bite.

Alto Adige Guide The Alps Most Underrated Winter and Wine Destination

Nature enthusiasts and winter sports fanatics will want to check in to Forestis Dolomites , an ultra-luxury resort amid the UNESCO World Heritage-recognized mountains, about an hour from Bolzano. First snowfall transforms the rugged, taupe peaks into a pristine, ivory landscape that you can admire from the comfort of your suite’s bed as the 62 rooms offer panoramic windows that usher in the surrounding nature. The ski-in, ski-out property offers off-piste winter activities like snowshoeing and sledding, as well as hiking, biking, fishing, and cooking classes to fill out the rest of the seasons. Furthermore, Forestis is renowned as a wellness haven, boasting a multi-level spa (recently named by Vogue as one of the best in the world ) that offers signature treatments inspired by the pure spring water and fresh mountain air, as well as immersive retreats specializing in preventative and high-altitude medicine.

Where to Eat and Drink

Alto Adige’s cuisine is as unique as its environs, and is primarily influenced by Austrian and Italian cuisine. Every morning, the tantalizing aromas of freshly baked bread float out of the cafes in Bolzano, like Bäckerei Franziskaner , where you’ll find more than a dozen loaves, including spelt, whole grain rye, muesli bread, and yogurt bars. If you aren’t in the city, custard-filled croissants and donuts are popular morning treats across the region, so don’t skimp on the hotel pastry selection.

For lunch, you’ll want to tuck into a farmhouse inn or winery for a leisurely affair of authentic dishes, from meter-long charcuterie boards on Bistro Castel Turmhof ’s terrace to a trio of regional cheese, beet, and spinach knödel dumplings at Restaurant Gasthof Kohlern . The cheesy round knödel are so buttery soft they don’t require a knife—in fact, it’s custom to only dig in with a fork. Barley soup, polenta, and ratatouille are also culinary staples at these down-to-earth farmhouses.

Like elsewhere in Italy, aperitivo hour—or marende as it’s regionally referred to in South Tyrol—is a cherished ritual, acting as a transition between the work day’s end and the start of the evening. During this period, cured meats—especially speck, a local smoked ham—are served with a selection of cheeses like gray, alpine wild herb, and Stangenkäse. In cities like Bolzano and Meran, the main squares, or piazze , swell with locals and tourists alike seeking their routine spritz, which in South Tyrol, is predominantly crafted with elderflower liqueur and known as a Hugo spritz. Local wines like the dry white wine of Pinot Gris or a chilled light-bodied red wine like Schiava are also enjoyed at aperitivo hour. In Bolzano, Enoteca Il Bacaro is an adorable wine bar secreted behind the main streets, while Vögelino bar in Piazza Walther is the quintessential spritz in a square experience. If you’re visiting in between summer and autumn, Tyroleans call this the “fifth season,” and is a time when roasted chestnuts are popular as the season’s wine is sampled and replaces aperitivo for a few days.

Unlike other European regions, Tyroleans dine relatively early, typically between 6 to 8 p.m. (whereas in Verona, less than two hours south, you wouldn’t find a local eating before 9 p.m.). Dinners tend to revolve around simply prepared meats; at fine dining restaurants that might entail lamb, veal, or venison, while country-inspired menus tout goulash stews with beef slowly braised in cumin and paprika. Don’t miss Löwengrube in Bolzano (if you’re with a large group, book their wine cellar) and Laurin Restaurant . Finally, the pinnacle of dessert is apple strudel, served warm with a dollop of whipped cream.

Alto Adige boasts an annual average of 300 days of sunshine, so there’s always an excuse to get outside. In winter, skiers and snowboarders have their pick of 750 miles of slopes across 30 ski areas, including the country’s top-rated Seiser Alm Snow Park. The most famed sections are the Dolomiti Superski, Ortler Skiarena, Wipptal ski network, and Ahrntal ski world, while the Sellaronda ski circuit is recognized as one of the world’s best, connecting four Dolomite passes over 25 miles. There’s also high-altitude cross-country skiing in the Antholzertal valley and snowshoe hikes along high plateaus.

If your trip falls in the summer season, you’ll want to spend as much time outside as possible, whether you’re soaking in the local lake culture around Kalterer See, the warmest lake in the Alps, or shopping in the capital city of Bolzano. Its daily market, Obstplatz, offers a peek into local life as residents pick up fresh flowers, spices, and fresh pasta; for tourists, they present vacuum-sealed speck and Alpine cheese. (For a fashion fix, visit Vanity and Rili Atelier for Milano-designed clothing and leather accessories.) Warm weather activities include biking through Tyrolean villages and blankets of brilliant green indigenous grape vines or trekking from one mountain hut to another along the 10,000-mile network of trails.

The Messner Mountain Museums are also worth the trek: a series of six museums created by mountaineer Reinhold Messner, they present an education on mountain culture but are architectural wonders in their own right. Abbazia di Novacella is another multi-set attraction—a working monastery since 1142, currently in its 58th generation of abbots. There, you’ll discover a library hosting 97,000 handwritten books, a local osteria, seasonal events like their jazz festival, and one of the oldest active wineries in the world.

No matter the season, wellness and wine call. Follow the Wine Road or stop by individual wineries to swirl, sip, and savor the bounty of Alto Adige wines. Cantina Kurtatsch combines activity and viticulture with their Wine Expedition; a day-long opportunity to hike through their vineyards and try around 12 varieties at their site. If you think white wines can’t age, plan a visit to Cantina Terlano , which specializes in long-aging white wines. The tasting terrace at Elena Walch overlooks their fairytale vineyards and Lake Caldaro, while Tenuta Kornell offers private tours through their historical cellar set under the picturesque hillside.

Meanwhile, destination spas across the region incorporate centuries-old traditions of hay baths and mountain pine treatments. The thermal baths at Terme Merano are world-recognized to soothe body and soul while a series of intimate, mountain hideaways specialize in immersive natural getaways for a mental reset.

Sunken Gardens

The Sunken Gardens began as the hobby of a plumber named George Turner and have evolved into a St. Petersburg institution. First conceived of in 1903, Turner transformed a lakebed into a six-acre tropical garden, which eventually became so popular that he started to charge admission.

The Turner family continued to care for and improve upon the garden, and it was finally purchased by the city in 1999, becoming a community effort. Today, you can walk the paths and enjoy the rare plants, some of which are as old as the garden itself.

You'll have a chance to see tropical flora from all over the world, and enjoy the ambience of waterfalls, footbridges, and even resident flamingos. The gardens also conduct horticultural programs and garden tours, as well as host special events, including weddings.

Aerial view of the new St. Pete Pier

The brand-new St. Pete Pier is a far cry from what used to exist in the same space only a few short years ago. Today the Pier is more than just an extension into the ocean; now it's 26 acres of fun, food, activities, and entertainment.

Blending seamlessly into the surroundings, the pier area is an ideal place to spend an afternoon with the family or an evening out with a group of friends. You'll find six different restaurants ranging from Teak, a fine-dining establishment with fantastic views, right through to the more casual Fresco's Waterfront Bistro offering vistas of the incredible array of pleasure craft moored nearby. For a snack by the beach, pop into the Spa Beach Bistro.

The St. Pete Pier is 3,000 feet long and can be a nice place to visit for a stroll, but it can also feel like a long walk in the hot Florida sun. Fortunately, a tram runs from end to end making a walk out and a tram ride back a popular combination.

Spread throughout the St. Pete Pier area are public works of art , one of the most spectacular being the work by Janet Echelman called Bending Arc . Near the end of the pier is the unique Olnetopia by Nick Ervinck. Also definitely worth checking out is the sculpture of the Benoist Airboat first flown by Tony Jannus in 1914.

Don't worry, you can still fish at the new St. Pete Pier – just walk all the way out to the end, where you'll find a platform. Bait and tackle are available nearby.

Camping reservations can be made six months in advance for non-residents, seven months in advance for residents.

Boyd Hill Nature Preserve

This lovely park is a beautiful retreat for those looking for a little nature. The park features six miles of walking trails and boardwalks that explore the area's varied ecosystems, including swamp woodlands and a willow marsh.

The park is also part of the Great Florida Birding Trail and home to the Birds of Prey Aviary, and rangers provide guided tours, which often spot turtles and other wildlife. The park also offers nature camps and picnic facilities and has a playground, picnic areas, and shelters.

Also on site is a gift shop, and the park hosts annual nature events like a butterfly count conducted by the North American Butterfly Association.

Sunshine Skyway Bridge

Located on I 275, the Sunshine Skyway Bridge crosses the water at the entrance to Tampa Bay. This spectacular bridge is impressive from a distance but driving across it offers a unique perspective. Stretching 12 miles in total, a little more than four miles of the bridge rises high above the ocean, allowing for large vessels to pass below.

Two main pillars tower above the road, and the high points add some eye-catching drama to the bridge. It took five years to build, and is now considered one of the world's most beautiful bridges. Views of the bridge are particularly beautiful at night when it is lit up.

If the wind is blowing, pull off at the northern Skyway Rest Exit and check out the kiteboarders racing across the water under their colorful kites.

Pinellas Trail

The Fred Marquis Pinellas Trail, created along an abandoned railroad corridor, is a 37-mile-long park and recreation trail, running from the downtown waterfront of St. Petersburg to Tarpon Springs.

This multi-use trail is enjoyed by walkers, runners, cyclists, and skaters, and features a number of shops, restaurants, and cafes along the route. To help visitors navigate, nine sculptures mark the various communities through which the trail passes.

One of the lovely areas along the trail is Dunedin , a quaint town that has preserved its village-like atmosphere. It began as a seaport and trading center, and is best known today as the spring training camp for the Toronto Blue Jays.

Honeymoon Island State Recreation Area and Caladesi Island State Park are located just off the coast of Dunedin and offer opportunities for both nature and water sports enthusiasts.

Kayaking at Weedon Island Preserve

This is a free attraction, and visitors will learn about the area's ecosystems, habitats, plants, and animals, and how humans have interacted with nature here over thousands of years. From the center, you can walk out on scenic trails.

Walking trail at Weedon Island Preserve

If you are interested in paddling or fishing, head to the boat launch area. You can set off from here, and the water is quite shallow in areas. People come here to kayak or stand up paddleboard; kayak rentals are available nearby. Next to the launch is a dock where people come to fish.

This is an excellent place for bird-watching, as well as spotting marine life in the water of this protected flood plain, including stingrays and oysters.
