With recent events, virtual meetings have taken off in a huge way especially with Zoom due to its ease of use. However other apps have been quick to make it easier to change your virtual background including Microsoft Teams, Google Meet, Skype and Cisco Webex.

Having problems adding a background? Our guides will help. With Zoom the most common issues are either your Zoom software needs updated or the device isn’t up to it yet. Microsoft Teams has had virtual backgrounds for a long time however they were hard to add until recently. We will show you where to copy your backgrounds to have them appear in Microsoft Teams if you are using an older version. Skype and Google Meet also have virtual background options and we describe how to use these also.

We also list the image resolution of the cool image backgrounds. Zoom recommends an image background of 1920 x 1080 as this has a 16:9 aspect ratio. Seeing black bars beside your background image? It is probably because you are using a background image with a different aspect ratio.

A green screen, also known as a Chroma Key, is recommended by Zoom and there is an option to tell Zoom you are using a green screen however Microsoft Teams say they do not need this for their software.

A chroma key is a technique used in film, video and still photography and refers to having a solid consistent color that can be easy to identify by software so it can be replaced with a background image. The color does not have to be green (blue screens are common). It should ideally only be a color that is not likely to appear anywhere else (so if you want to wear a green T-shirt, maybe get a blue chroma key screen). A setting needs to be changed within Zoom to tell it you are using a green screen. Note that there have been complaints in relation to Zoom that the face-detection algorithm erases the faces of people of color.

Virtual Background Tips

What is the best size background to use? Zoom recommends backgrounds with dimensions of 1920px by 1080px. This is a 16:9 aspect ratio. If you use an image with a different aspect ratio, you may see black bars beside the background image

Need to leave the room for a moment? Just cover over the webcam. It will allow viewers to continue enjoying your background.

Make lots of calls? Consider having a green screen behind you. It will really help the software. Or if you like to wear green sometimes or have green eyes, perhaps one with a blue screen as an option.

Before a meeting, try a test run. It will help you see if you are clashing with your background at all (e.g. the color of clothing or green eyes).

Dark hair and dark chair? It may mean that the chair may move in and out of frame at different times. You can help the software by placing something of a different solid color over the back of your chair, giving the software a better chance at differentiating between you and the chair. If you have dark hair you might stand out better with a light background (and vice versa).

The spread of the coronavirus has forced many people to work from home and communicate via virtual meetings on Zoom and other free video conferencing services . While it turns out that virtual meetings are about as exciting as real-life meetings ( unless you’re planning to play games with your friends ), Zoom does offer one amusing advantage that makes them more exciting: customizable virtual backgrounds.

As far as the Zoom backgrounds available, there are tons of great ones to choose from, including more than a few backgrounds based on your favorite shows and movies. It’s actually possible to upload just about any background you want, but to get you started, we’ve highlighted some of the best geeky backgrounds that we’ve found around the internet.

Before we dive into the background, here’s a quick breakdown on how to upload a custom background image to Zoom:

• Go to the Zoom app’s settings menu.
• Choose the Virtual Background option on the left.
• Click on the Plus icon on the right side of “Choose Virtual Background”
• Upload your desired background image file from your device.

Game of Thrones, Westworld, and More From HBO

HBO got in on the Zoom background game fairly early on with this collection of favorites from the premium network. The Silicon Valley and Sharp Objects backgrounds are surprisingly subtle and all-around awesome, but nobody is going to blame you if you choose to sit on the Iron Throne from Game of Thrones .

It’s slightly disappointing that HBO didn’t dive deeper into its catalog for these official backgrounds, but you can always make a custom image that lets you address your co-workers from the front of a New Jersey pork store or the Gem saloon.

The Incredibles, Finding Nemo, and the Pixar Collection

The Pixar collection is not only instantly recognizable, but the crystal clear visuals of the best Pixar movies happen to make them the perfect candidates for Zoom backgrounds.

Thankfully, Pixar has already posted an official collection of backgrounds for your amusement. You can’t go wrong with The Incredibles background , and the Toy Story cloud wall background also works shockingly well for just about any situation.

The Simpsons, Family Guy, and the Rest of the Fox Animated Lineup

Few networks have access to as many iconic animated series as Fox does, so we were thrilled to find that the Fox team has sent out some quality official images for your custom background.

The Simpsons couch is an obvious winner here that just about everyone will be able to appreciate, but we’ve got to send some love to those Bob’s Burger backgrounds. It’s just a shame you can’t change the name of the daily special on the chalkboard.

If only there were background images devoted to the many cancelled Fox series over the years. We need some Fastlane back in our lives.

DC Comics Is Offering Everything Awesome

We’re not going to get into a whole DC/Marvel thing right now, but we’ve got to give a special shout out to DC for offering some of the best looking official Zoom background images of any major company.

These animated stills are not only stunningly well-drawn, but they offer a variety of creative background scenarios that will instantly set you apart from your Zoom friends. I mean, just take a look at that awesome Gotham by Gaslight -style background. You also have to love the Fortress of Solitude options, which not only look great but are oddly appropriate right now.

Marvel Lets You Zoom into the MCU

Not to be outdone by the competition, Marvel posted a few official Zoom backgrounds on its website that offer you the chance to sit in front of a few different corners of the Marvel universe.

The bulk of these selections feature the MCU films, which is honestly pretty hard to complain about. Granted, it’s a limited selection of options, but the fact you get a few options from the colorful Thor: Ragnarok is good enough for now.

The two comic-style options are also pretty great, but we need some quality X-Men backgrounds ASAP.

Star Wars Millenium Falcon (and Pretty Much Everything Else)

Since it doesn’t seem like the Star Wars team has entered the Zoom backgrounds arena yet, you’re left relying on the many fan-made backgrounds that have already been created.

We’re particularly fond of the Millenium Falcon image you see above, which is not only clean and recognizable but also feels natural for conferencing purposes. We also highly recommend finding a way to put yourself in the Jedi High Council room or Emperor’s throne room. The cockpit of the Millennium Falcon is another good one.

At the risk of playing favorites, few series lend themselves quite as well to awesome Zoom backgrounds as Star Trek does.

From official collections that transport you o the world of Picard to unofficial options that take you to the original Enterprise bridge and Next Generation holodeck, the wealth of Star Trek backgrounds out there highlights the franchise’s incredible futuristic visuals and creativity.

Animated Backgrounds in Teams Meetings

Microsoft Teams has rolled out a new feature that will probably make some people smile, and others unhappy. I’m not sure which one I am yet. It’s the ability to have  animated backgrounds  when you use your video camera in a Teams meeting. Before you run off and grab your favorite Star Trek warp speed video background, read on for the restrictions and cautions…

To add video effects when you’re using your video camera, click on  More > Video Effects :

The Video effects panel will show you all the backgrounds you have available to use. You’ll notice four backgrounds that have a  small video icon  in the lower left corner. Those are the four pre-canned video backgrounds that Microsoft has provided:

I used this one for a demo. Granted, it’s not moving here as I didn’t want to load a video here. But in this one, the lights in the town twinkle, providing just a small bit of movement to capture your attention:

Here are the caveats:

• Only pre-defined backgrounds from Microsoft are provided. You currently cannot upload your own.
• Animated backgrounds are not available on low-end devices and require at least 8 GB RAM, CPU with 4 logical processors.
• Using more video filters might slow down background animation, in case of high machine workload.

Basically, there are some very narrow guardrails when it comes to using this feature.

Why am I not overly thrilled with this feature? If everyone has animated backgrounds going, it can make it hard to focus on the actual content of the meeting. The provided video backgrounds are pretty subtle and aren’t too bad. However, if/when Microsoft allows uploads of animated backgrounds, I know some people will go overboard with constant and dramatic movement… that will run continuously… during the entire meeting. Definitely a case of “just because you can, doesn’t mean you should…”

Captains like to show off, so why don't you use your next daily, to present your new boat to your colleagues? The world is a crazy place these days so you have relocated your home office to the deck of your yacht.

You have left earth for a few weeks but still join the regular update calls from the Death Star's throne room, the Enterprise bridge or together with your friends from the Millennium Falcon.
