Delhi’s National Zoological Park is one of the favourite hangout areas for families, particularly the ones with small kids. Located in the heart of the city, Delhi Zoo is spread in an area of 176-acres and is situated near the Old Fort.

The National Zoological Park houses about 1350 animals and birds of over 130 species, sourced from across the globe. From the Royal Bengal Tiger to the Indian Rhinoceros, Swamp Deer, Asiatic Lion, Brow Antlered Deer, and Red Jungle Fowl, the Delhi Zoo houses them all.

The idea of having a Zoo in the national capital first struck in 1952, when the Indian Board of Wildlife thought that there should be a place like this in Delhi. The idea was to create a place which will be of recreation value to the people as well as can impart some level of knowledge too.

The thought was appreciated and accordingly, a committee, that included names like Smt Indira Gandhi, was constituted. The committee approved the site between Purana Qila and Humayun’s Tomb to construct the zoo, when it first met on 9th September 1953.

The then Central Government had to build the park and then hand it over to the Delhi Government as the wildlife was to be managed by the Forest Department of the state government. N D Bachkheti, an Indian Forest Service Officer was chosen on 1st October 1955 to do the task.

Major Weinmann, Director of the Ceylon Zoological Garden, Colombo, was entrusted with the task of helping in making the plan of the zoological park. Although he gave a report along with a plan, he wasn’t available for regular consultations.

Further, the government sought services of Carl Hagenbeck, owner of the famous Animal Park at Hamburg, West Germany. He introduced the idea of open moat enclosures in Delhi Zoo. He came up with the concept of moat enclosures and prepared a preliminary plan of the zoo by March 1956. In the plan, he made provisions of roads, waterways, paths, sewage systems and animal enclosures, all that is desired to make the zoo an attractive place. The plan was reviewed and approved with amendments by the government on 31st December, 1956.

It took about three years for the zoo to get constructed. The construction was over by the end of 1959, where the zoo with roads, moats, waterways, animal houses, ponds, lawns and plantation had come into being.

After the completion of construction of the zoo was announced, a lot of state governments and individuals started gifting animals to be kept there. The collection included Tigers, Leopards, Monkeys, Bears, Antelope, Dear and many bird species.

The National Zoological Park was finally inaugurated by Punjab Rao Deshmukh, Hon'ble Minister of the Government of India on 1st November, 1959. It was then named as Delhi Zoo. However, with the idea of making it a model zoo for the entire country, it was given the status of National Zoological Park in 1982.

Ever since, the environment of the zoo has been maintained in such a way that it gives the animals and birds living there a feeling of their natural home.

Entry Fees & Timings

The entry fee of Delhi zoo is as follows: Indians: Rs.40 (Adults), Rs. 20 (Children from 5-12 years), Rs. 20 (Senior Citizens) Foreigners: Rs. 200 (Adults), Rs. 100 (Children from 5-12 years). Entry is free for Children below 5 years of age.

The zoo is open on all days, except Fridays and national holidays. From 1st April to 15th October, the timings are 9 AM to 4.30 PM. However, during winters, from 16th October to 31st March, the timings are 9.30 AM to 4.00 PM.

Instructions for visiting the National Zoological Park

• One is not allowed to take food items, except milk and porridge for babies, inside the zoo campus. If you want to eat something, you can visit the cafes built within the premises. This has been done to ensure the safety of the animals.
• Teasing animals or an attempt to hurt them is a punishable offence. So, it should be avoided by all means.
• The zoo authorities provide for filming of various levels within the zoo premises. But one needs to seek permission for that.
• The best time to visit the zoo is during winters, when you can afford to walk on a sunny day. It is a fairly long area to cover, so having enough energy is important.

DTC Bus: There are a whole lot of buses that ply towards Delhi Zoo. They include 894A, 445, 374, 402, 403, 405,419,423, 425,429, 438 and 966.

Metro: Nearest metro station to Delhi Zoo is Pragati Maidan Metro Station on the Blue line. It is at a distance of 2.2 km from the Zoo.

What You Should Know Before Visiting the National Zoological Park or Delhi Zoo

Those of us who have grown up in Delhi will remember the National Zoological Park or the Delhi Zoo , as it is better known, very fondly. It was and continues to be a huge attraction for children and parents of young children. It has a well-mapped out and lovely selection of animals and is located in a beautiful and green part of Delhi. I remember going there as a 3-year-old myself, and we have been taking my son for frequent visits ever since he turned two. So, for his recent 8 th birthday, when we asked him what he would like to do to celebrate, he had two requests: take his closest friends for a zoo visit and take the whole family for a weekend staycation to his favourite resort, the Westin Sohna. And of course, we indulged his birthday wishes. Mind you, planning a trip to the zoo with a big group wasn’t easy but it was loads of fun! The kids had an absolute blast. So, I’m here to share tips in case you would like to plan a similar outing with your children’s friends.

Another reason I was keen to write this post was that I recently read an influencer’s post on Instagram completely dissing the Delhi Zoo as being unworthy of a visit because she had such a bad experience. If you go without any idea of what to expect and without even a basic plan in place, you may end up having a tough time. So, be mindful of these tips and you will be sure to enjoy your visit to the Delhi Zoo.

Book your tickets online a day before

Though you can buy tickets on the spot, the Delhi Zoo tends to be very crowded when the weather is as lovely as it currently is. Hence, I recommend booking your tickets a day in advance from their website: https://nzpnewdelhi.gov.in/?ln=en , especially if you are going in a big group. Over the weekends, the tickets tend to sell out fast, so be mindful of that. The tickets only become available one day in advance, so you can’t book them weeks or months in advance.

Avoid weekends unless you go early morning because during season time it’s crazyyyy crowded!

For most of us, weekend visits to the Delhi Zoo are the most convenient. However, if you do go on a weekend, it is best to go as soon as the Zoo opens at (8:30 am in the winters) in order to avoid the crazy crowds. This will ensure you reach in time to avail of the next and most important point.

Book a private buggy

The Delhi Zoo covers a large area and you will have to walk a lot. Most people buy individual buggy tickets, which means you have to wait at the designated pick-up points for a buggy to arrive. This can be very inconvenient as you have to jostle for space with large crowds and you end up wasting a lot of time as you keep waiting for buggies to arrive. Fortunately, there is an option to book private buggies (Rs 800 for a 14-seater and Rs 1100 for a 20-seater), which allows you to minimise walking, and choose the animals you want to see. Most importantly, you won’t have to fight with others for a seat on the public buggies. Unfortunately, this option is only available on weekdays or weekend mornings as when it’s too crowded, they don’t allow private buggy hires.

No food is allowed inside!

Till quite recently, there were a number of food and drink vendors selling their wares inside the Delhi Zoo. However, their contracts ended recently, and so now there is no food available inside. What’s worse is that you aren’t allowed to carry any of your own snacks in because they discourage feeding of animals. Don’t try to sneak any food in because it will be confiscated at the checking point! Hence, if you are visiting with kids, ensure they are well-fed before taking them to the zoo to avoid hunger-related meltdowns.

Carry plenty of water

Fortunately, you are allowed to carry your own water bottles, and I recommend you carry plenty of them because even when you have a private buggy, there is still lots of walking involved! And you can always leave the bottles in the private buggy.

Chart out a map of the important animals you want to see to make the most of your time

It would be time well-spent to study the map of the Delhi Zoo online, so that you know which animals you are particularly keen to see and which ones you can skip to save on time. Fortunately, the buggy drivers also point out all the animals, so you will enjoy your visit even if you have absolutely no knowledge beforehand.

Wear comfortable shoes and clothes

A visit to the Delhi Zoo is an active, outdoor excursion, so be sure to wear comfortable shoes and clothes and carry a pram for your babies. I have seen women hobbling around barefoot holding their uncomfortable heels in their hands, having learnt their lesson the hard way!

The zoo is closed on Fridays

Though Friday is a nice day to visit the Delhi Zoo as an after-school excursion, or perhaps as a nice way to start the weekend, the zoo is actually closed on this day. So don’t turn up on a Friday hoping to get tickets on the spot!

The toilets are very dirty

Please be mindful that the toilets at the National Zoological Park are extremely dirty, so be sure to have every person use the toilet at home before you visit.

An overview of our birthday visit to the Delhi Zoo :

My son’s birthday was on a Tuesday, which was ideal because this meant we could definitely book the private buggies. However, we could only take his friends after school. The Delhi Zoo closes at 4:30 pm in winters, so this meant we had only about 1.5 hours after school to enjoy the zoo. To make the most of our time, we picked all the kids from school (made sure they used the toilet before we left!) and gave them lunch boxes to eat in the car on the way to the zoo. Once there, each one carried their water bottle inside and we booked two private buggies, which themselves were objects of fascination for all the 7-and 8-year-olds! After enjoying the zoo and seeing most of the exciting animals, we left at 4:30 pm and brought the kids back to our home, which is fortunately located close-by. The cake-cutting and birthday party with lots of food, took place at home. So, it was a pretty action-packed birthday celebration, and it ended up being very lovely!

Really helpful post. These points are a must. As you said being hydrated is essential. Its a lot to walk

Noor, would you believe that the Delhi Zoological Garden was one of my favorite places in Delhi even when I was growing up, especially in the winter season? Actually, it houses so many lovely plants too because of which it was a great lesson in zoology and botany for me. Not to forget the beautiful landscape and the winter blooms, the backdrop of the Purana Qila, it was such a lovely hang out! The battery-powered buggy came much later but it was such a relief to have a buggy in the sweltering heat. You just brought all the great memories back with this post.

You have given such practical advice that can be followed anywhere. I have taken my kids to Bangalore banarghatta Zoo and Mysore zoo and trust me having a water, Comfy shoes are must. Buggy is such boon as walking to huge property is next to impossible with kids.

I last went to the zoo in 2013 or maybe 2014! It’s good to know about the bad condition of the toilets in advance. I like your pointers, though I am in a dilemma whether should zoos even exist or not. But they do have scientific value and can bring awareness for the generations while Nature is being trampled upon all the time.

You remember going to the zoo as a 3-year-old? Wow! I don’t remember most things from my early life (ages 0-5). Oh boy the way you’ve described it, there still seems to be quite a few -ve points like dirty toilets and no food. The animals do look well-taken care of so that’s a a major +. I’m sure with all the tips you’ve shared one would have a great day at the zoo, especially the kids. I do wonder how to deal with nature calls and hunger pangs though. I was pretty young when I first went for a zoo visit in Nandan Kanan when went for a trip to puri with my parents and elder sister. What I still remember from that visit of mine is the black panther… it stared at me so bad that still I can recall those eyes. It was chilling experience for me. In later part when I was working at Delhi then I went for a date with my now husband and that time it was a better experience for me as there was no panther and the tigers were calm. Once an incident happened in the Delhi zoo where the tiger attacked one visitor and mishap happened, such incidents scare me a lot and that’s why I prefer no visiting zoo. But as my son is growing atleast once he deserves to visit there, i will keep your pointers in mind to plan the visit.

As a Delhiite, I’ve been to the Zoo many times with my parents & friends. The last visit was before my marriage, went there with a friend & her little nephew. Although, we had a wonderful time, seeing the behavior of people towards animals & noticing the limited space provided for them to roam was deeply troubling. After learning more about the conditions in which animals are kept in captivity, I made the decision to stop visiting zoos altogether. So, I’ve not visited any zoos with my son but he has been to some with his school. The Delhi National Zoological Park is one of India’s most beautiful zoological gardens. About National Zoological Park

These animals and birds come from all over the world, including Africa, America, Australia, and more, and they all have a home in this zoo. The Mughal Kos Minar serves as the gateway to the Delhi Zoo. After about one kilometre, the curving route, which is paved with red Badarpur gravel, splits into two directions. Along with the fauna on both sides, the zoo also has a library, which houses knowledge about animals, birds, plants, rare zoological species, and other subjects in India. One goes out for lunch with huge numbers of family members and also plays games with the kids. The amusement parks and boat rides on the surrounding lakes are particularly popular with children.

Children especially like seeing Chimpanzees, Hippopotamuses, Spider Monkeys, African Wild Buffalo, Gir Lions, and Zebras, as well as aquatic animals and birds including Macaque, Banteng, Emu, Hyenas, Axis deer, Fallow deer, Peafowl, Hog Dear, and Jaguar. NATIONAL ZOOLOGICAL PARK

Located near the Old Fort in Delhi, National Zoological Park is one of the most popular tourist places in Delhi. The National Zoological Park which was formerly called Delhi Zoo was later renamed to make it an ideal model of a zoo in the country. 

National Zoological Park has created an abode that resembles a natural habitat of several wilds as well as domestic animals. The zoo houses around 1300 animals from around 130 species of Indian as well as international animals and birds. The zoo serves as a home for these animals and is also a breeding ground for those animals. This natural citadel situated in the middle of the hustle and bustle of Delhi serves as a break for the citizens.

The various fascinating animals that can be found in the zoo are - Spider monkey, Asiatic Lion, Royal Bengal Tiger, Zebras, Indian Rhinoceros, Brow Antlered Deer, Swamp Deer, Giraffes, Gir Lion and migratory birds like Peafowl and a few water birds. These animals attract large numbers of visitors to the zoo from various places across the globe. By Metro: Khan Market is the nearest metro station to the National Zoological Park. Take the metro from IGI International Airport metro station to New Delhi-Airport Express and then take another metro to Central Secretariat and then take another metro to Khan Market. 

By Road: You can take DTC buses that run from Airport to National Zoological Park. Also, you can take private cabs which will be a little heavy on your pocket. 

Best Time To Visit

Though the zoo remains open all-around the year, it is advisable to visit the National Zoological Park in the summer season and winter season as more and more birds migrate to the zoo. To witness the migrating Little Brown Dove, Ring Dove, and Little Cormorant birds, one should visit the zoo in the summer season. To see birds like Common Swallow, various Wagtail birds, and Tailor Bird, one should visit the zoo during the winter season.

Places to Visit Near National Zoological Park:

1. Purana Qila or Quila: Purana Qila (formerly called as Shergarh & Sher Fort) is one of the oldest forts in Delhi and India which has been inhabited for nearly 2500 years. The fort is regarded as the site of Indraprastha which was the capital of the Pandavas from the Mahabharata period. The fort is around 6 km from the National Zoological Zoo and can be easily accessible by road.

Due to its historical importance and mammoth size and beauty, the fort is very popular among the tourists. There are various gates and mosques inside the Purana Qila like the Qila-i-Kuhna Mosque, Sher Mandal, Humayun Gate, Talaqi Darwaza, and many other gates. 

2. Humayun’s Tomb: Humayun’s Tomb is the tomb of the second Mughal Emperor Humayun and is a UNESCO Heritage Site. Humayun’s tomb comprises of many other tombs of several other Mughal Emperors and other family members of the Mughal family. Also, the place is very popular for its popular and one of a kind Charbagh, the Persian Style gardens.The tomb is styled in the Mughal style architecture, similar to many monuments like the Taj Mahal, Bibi-ka-Maqbara, etc. 

3. Rajpath: Rajpath is one of the most important roads of India which houses many ministries of the Indian Government. The road runs from the Rashtrapati Bhavan and ends at the India gate. Rajpath is the place where the annual Republic Day parade takes place. During the Britishers Rule, Rajpath was named as the “King’s Way” when the capital of India was moved from Kolkata to Delhi.

On one end of Rajpath lies the world-famous India Gate which stands as a memorial of the unknown soldier for the martyrs of World War I. Many national as well as international tourists visit India Gate in large numbers.

History of National Zoological Park:

The main motive of establishing a zoo in the national capital was to provide a healthy and inexpensive breakaway to the habitants and the tourists. The National Board for Wildlife (formerly Indian Board of Wildlife) was constituted in 1951 made a special appeal to establish a zoo in Delhi. To this, a special committee was formed under the secretaryship of E.F. Bowring Walsh, who at that time was the secretary of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty of Animals.

With funds from the Central Government and the project getting executed from the State Government, the plan for building a zoo was now on its path. A report on the layout plan was presented to the Government of India in March 1956 and by December 1956, the government gave the nod to start the work on the plan. The construction of the zoo was completed by 1959 with roads, waterways, ponds, fences and animal houses been constructed alongside some lawns and plantation did.

With the news of the development of a zoo in Delhi spreading across the country, many zoos from different cities of India gifted many animals to the zoo authorities. The zoo was formally inaugurated on 1st November 1959 and was initially called as Delhi Zoo. In 1982, the name of the zoo was later changed to National Zoological Park from Delhi Zoo. 

Restaurants Near National Zoological Park:

The National Zoological Park also has a canteen for its visitors. Other than its canteen, there are various other food outlets and restaurants near the National Zoological Park. They are as follows:

1. Masala House

Masala House is located at a distance of around 1 km from the National Zoological Park. The name of the restaurant resembles its specialty and its blend of popular masalas. The restaurant is famous for its aromatic dishes, food served in pots and some awesome handpicked masalas. The specialty of Masala House is that it serves various Indian Traditional dishes grandly.

Migratory: National Zoological Park also experiences many migratory birds from different locations across the country. Migratory birds like Pintail Duck, Shoveller, Common Teal, White or Rosy pelican are common to the various ponds of the zoo. In the summer season, the zoo welcomes the Spot-bill or Grey Duck to its various ponds. In the winter season, the ponds of the zoo are visited by Comb Duck.

Seasonal Birds: There are many birds that flock seasonally, meaning they fly in particular seasons. Birds like Little Brown Dove, Ring Dove, Little Cormorant and Darter (snakebird) flock in the summer seasons. Whereas, during the rainy season, the zoo is filled with White Ibis, Indian Pond Heron or the Paddy Bird and Night Heron. In the winter season, birds like Common Swallow, various Wagtail birds, and Tailor Bird often flock in the zoo.

The Delhi Zoo has an interesting story which dates back to 1951, when National Board of Wildlife (then Indian Board of Wildlife) decided to establish a Zoo in Delhi. The Construction of the Zoo began in 1956 and it was later inaugurated in 1959 by Mr Punjab Rao Deshmukh, Hon’ble Minister, Government of India. The Zoo was initially spread over an area of 55 acres but it has since expanded to cover an area of 176 acres. The park was initially known as “Delhi Zoo” but it was renamed as “National Zoological Park” in 1982.

Over the years, the National Zoological Park Delhi has undergone several renovations and improvements. In 1982, a new entrance was constructed for the Zoo and Zoo was divided into several sections based on the type of Animals there. The Zoo underwent a major renovation in 2008 which included the construction of new enclosers and habitats for the animals.

Today, the Delhi Zoo is considered to be one of the most popular and well-maintained Zoo in India. It attracts thousands of visitors every year. Delhi Zoo is located on Mathura Road in New Delhi. It is sprawled over an area of 176 acre.

There was no zoo in the national capital before the opening of Delhi zoo. The idea of having a zoo in the national capital originated in 1951 and started taking shape in the coming years. Carl Hagenbeck of the Zoological Garden of Hamburg was hired for presenting the plan of the zoo.

This plan was then modified according to the local conditions and approved by the government in 1956. The park was inaugurated in 1959. Later, its name was changed to National Zoological Park, Delhi in 1982. 

Delhi, the capital of India before and after independence, has perhaps seen more of history than any other town in India. Mehrauli Archaeological Park in Delhi (India) is a world heritage site with time ravaged monuments from the 10th century to the British era. Read more about it here .

This zoo is home and breeding ground to around 1300 animals.  It is a fairly well maintained zoo with about 130 species of Indian and international animals and birds.

Shuttle service available inside the zoo at INR 70 per adult, INR 30 for children aged 5-12 years and free for children up to age 5 years. Animals and birds in Delhi zoo

You can see White Tiger, Bengal Tiger, African Elephant, Asiatic Lion, Hippopotamus, Rhinoceros, Jackal, Cheetah, crocodile, chimpanzee, Spider monkey, Macaque, Palm civet, porcupine, mongoose in this zoo. Reptile section of the zoo has cobra, rat snakes, python and more. 

Some nocturnal animals like bats can be difficult to spot as they hide and sleep during the daytime.

I had read mixed reviews about the Delhi zoo before visiting. The reason behind this could probably be the expectations of the international visitors. Also, there have been many cases of animals dying in the zoo during the last few years. 

Delhi zoo losing its animals

A 14 year old tigress named Kalpana had died due to kidney failure in the Delhi zoo during April 2020. During September 2020, an adult female baboon had died due to infection. From January 2020 to September 2020, total 65 deaths had taken place in Delhi zoo.

During October 2020 a lioness named Akhila died at Delhi zoo due to pulmonary renal complications. She had been facing health issues for nine years and was being treated for the same. According to the zoo authorities, there has been a decline of about 47 % in the animal deaths this year in comparison to last year.

The good and the bad

News like these are quite disheartening for the wildlife and animal lovers. It often makes me think about the advantages and disadvantages of keeping animals in zoo. Keeping animals in zoos deprive them of their natural habitat. On the other side, there are many endangered species that need to kept in a safe environment. Measures being taken by Delhi Zoo authorities

Many steps have been undertaken by the zoo authorities for the improvement of the zoo. CCTV cameras have been installed for better monitoring of the animals and also to monitor the visitors to keep a check that rules are not being violated. 

Under an enrichment campaign, animals habitat is being improved so that conditions similar to the animals natural habitat can be provided to them for their better overall health.

Under the animal exchange programme, other zoos in the country are being approached for animal exchange so that breeding of the animals can be ensured.

The breeding programme started with a pair of brow antlered deer was very successful and many deers from the herd were distributed to other zoos in the country.

Drinking water and Toilet facilities

Drinking water and toilet facilities are available inside the zoo. Outside food is strictly not allowed. This is probably to keep the zoo premises clean and to prohibit visitors from offering food to the animals and birds. There are stalls inside the zoo that sell drinks.

Tips for visiting Delhi Zoo

• Do not bring any eatables except milk for babies. Food is strictly not allowed inside the zoo.
• If you don’t want to get tired, make use of the shuttle inside the zoo.
• Wear comfortable cloths and shoes.
• Avoid visiting the zoo when the weather is too hot as animals would be seeking shelter and won’t be easily visible.
• Do not tease or feed animals.
• Follow the rules and instructions given by the staff.

Which day zoo is closed in Delhi?

The National Zoological Park is providing following facilities to its visitors:

Every luggage should be locked properly before depositing.

Don’t leave your cash / valuables / ornament / camera / mobile / laptop in the luggage to be kept at Clock Room. The Clock Room does not take any responsibility for the same.

Keep safety the key of your luggage with you.

The luggage will be returned only on production of authorized coupon issued by the Clock Room Staff at the time of depositing luggage/belongings. In case the coupon is lost luggage will be returned only to the satisfaction of the Clock Room Authorities after producing/proving proper ownership/identification of the depositor.

Dos and Don’ts

Please do not feed the animals. Animals are given balanced diet. Overfeeding spoils their health and sometimes they die if get wrong food.

Please do not tease animals.

Please do not cross barriers. You may risk being seriously injured if cross them. The animals can bite or claw you.

Please do not damage trees, flowers and lawns.

Please do not play Radio, Tape Recorder and Musical Instruments. Animals do not like to disturbed.

Please do not bring pets, firearms and weapons of any kind in the park.

Please put all your garbage in dustbins.

Please do not bring packets or polythene in the park.

Some Basic Information Must Read by Visitors

The basic information about the entrance fee and zoo ethics have been displayed prominently at the entrance of the zoo. Moreover, it is broadcast over the Public Address System at the entrance in Hindi and English during zoo entry hours.

The zoo has its own parking complex at the entrance for the visitors.

The Directional and orientation signage are available at prominent places in the zoo. 

Moreover, Map of the zoo is also displayed prominently at vantage points in the zoo.

Each enclosure of the animals is provided with the animal signage wherein basic information about the animals is available.

The Zoo Guide Map is available at the ticket window on payment. The foreign visitors are provided a map free of cost since its price is included in their entrance fee. Other zoo publications may be purchased from the office of the Director on all working days of the Government of India.

The zoo has Walking Trail for visitors to see animals on foot. The person on wheel chairs may also use this trail.

The zoo has provided Nine Toilets and one Urinals at different locations in the zoo for the convenience of the visitors.

The best way to see the animals is to move about on foot in the zoo. However, some visitors are not able to walk to enjoy their zoo visit because of various reasons. Keeping in view the need of such visitors, we have provided 12 numbers of pollution free Battery Operated Trolleys on hire basis. This trolley is operated by private agency.

The drinking water is very important necessity of the visitors. Accordingly we have ensured that drinking water is available at short distances throughout the zoo. There are Fifteen Water Coolers with water purification facility. The water at these points are available free of cost.

The eatables are not allowed inside the zoo in view of safety and security of the zoo animals. However, to help visitors to have some refreshments while inside the zoo bottle drinking water, tea, coffee, ice-cream and soft drinks are provided at designated sales outlets.

The cleanliness of the entire campus is not only aesthetic necessity but also helps us to keep our animals in perfect health free from diseases. As such we have provided dustbins throughout the zoo.

There are rain shelters throughout the Zoo.

The zoo has provided 250 resting benches in the zoo. These benches has been placed at all animal enclosures, toilets, urinals and drinking water points as well as at the entry of Zoo for visitors to take rest.

The physically challenged visitors may collect the wheel chairs at the entrance of the zoo free of cost. They have to return the wheel chairs at the same place after their visit of zoo.

Pram Service is available at 1st gate which the mother alongwith babies could avail free of cost.

A pota baby feeding cabin is established near Beat no-8 which the mother having their babies can avail for feeding breast milk to the babies.

The visitors may sometimes get minor injuries or may need medical aid while enjoying their zoo visit. As such the First Aid facility is available at following different locations in the zoo:

At the main entrance of the zoo near Booking Counter,

At the office of the Director of the zoo,

At the Veterinary Hospital, and

At the Range Office near koshminar.

Delhi Zoo, Delhi Overview

Delhi Zoo is the most apt place for all the animal lovers as it is an enclosed structure wherein animals of different species are kept on display. This way it solves the dual purpose of being a tourist attraction and also keeping the animals safely. Delhi Zoo is a home to 1350 animals representing almost 130 species on a land of 176 acre or 71 hectares. Delhi Zoo has been designed for the convenience of the visitors as they can explore it on foot or enjoy it on a battery operated vehicles, which can be taken on rent at the zoo. They also have a few important rules to its rule book and it is made sure that the rules are followed by the visitors. Some of the important rules are that apart from drinking water, nothing else is permitted to be taken inside the zoo. However, there is a full-fledged canteen to cater to the hunger demands of the visitors. One of the important rules is that people are not allowed to go too near to the cages of especially the wild animals or to irritate them.

History The idea of creating a zoo in Delhi was much older than its execution. It was in 1951 that the idea of having a zoo in the heart of India, New Delhi. However, its inauguration dates to November 1959. A committee was appointed in the year 1952 by the Indian Board for Wildlife for the development of the zoo. The idea of the Government of India was to construct the zoo and then make it a functioning enterprise. It was in 1953, when the exact site of the zoo was finalized by the esteemed committee which was formed for a similar purpose. After the finalization of the location of the zoo, the project of creating of the zoo was assigned to N. D. Bachkheti of the Indian Forest Service. The end of the year 1959 marked the completion of the Northern Part of the zoo and also it was then that the animals that were sheltered in pen homes were finally shifted to their permanent homes. Officially the park was inaugurated in 1959 as the Delhi Zoo, however, the name was further changed to National Zoological Park with the belief that it would act as a model for other zoos thriving in the country. Exhibits Taking a left from the very entrance of the zoo will make one land into the enclosures of the animals wherein the animals will range among Chimpanzee, Hippopotamus, Spider Monkey, African Wild Buffalo, Giraffes, Gir Lion, and Zebras. To the left of the entrance one will find certain migratory birds like peafowl, as well as hyenas, macaques, and jaguars in addition to the other animals. For the water birds, specific swamps have been developed to provide them with the feel of their original habitat. Conservation breeding The most significant part of the zoo is that it supports the conservation breeding programs of animals like Central Zoo Authority for the Royal Bengal Tiger, Indian Rhinoceros, Swamp Deer, Asiatic Lion, Brow Antlered Deer, and Red Jungle Fowl.

4:24 p.m.: Eclipse ends in Cincinnati

The solar eclipse officially ended in Cincinnati around 4:24 p.m. It also ended in many places around the U.S. between 4 and 5 p.m. ET.

4:10 p.m.: ODOT reports heavy traffic on I-74 toward Cincinnati

Through X Monday, ODOT reported heavy traffic heading toward Greater Cincinnati from Indiana on I-74. It also reported heavy traffic on I-475 and I-75 around Toledo, as well as on U.S. Route 33 going toward Columbus in Union County.

The department then reported that the left lane on I-75 in Dayton was blocked near Keowee Street.

4:07 p.m.: Eclipse nearing end in Cincinnati

The eclipse will be over in Cincinnati at approximately 4:24 p.m.

Many places across the country will see the eclipse end between 4 and 5 p.m. ET.

3:20 p.m.: No major traffic delays in Ohio

The Ohio Department of Transportation is reporting no traffic delays at this time.

2:20 p.m.: People enjoying start of eclipse at Miami Whitewater Forest

People came in droves to see the total eclipse from Miami Whitewater Forest on Monday. Take a look at the video of the crowd below.

Among the ways to enjoy the eclipse is from a boat on the Miami Whitewater lake. Enquirer reporter Sherry Coolidge did just that and wrote about her experience.

"One of my favorite tween books (a long time ago) was called 'Taking Care of Terrific' by Lois Lowry, which involved a babysitter taking a child to the park to ride swan boats. 

I always loved the image of that. So when I saw there were swan boats at the Miami Whitewater Forest late today I had to try it out. (It was really a dragon and I cajoled my almost 16-year-old son into helping pedal.)

It lived up to the hype I built in my head, and it’s by far the most popular attraction here today ahead of the eclipse. Well, a close second to the playground at least."

1:52 p.m.: Partial eclipse arrives in Cincinnati

A partial eclipse began in Cincinnati at 1:52 p.m. It will end at 4:24 p.m., and the moon will obscure approximately 99.4% of the sun at its peak.

1:30 p.m.: The 2024 solar eclipse is almost here!

We're just minutes away from the start of the solar eclipse. The eclipse will begin in Cincinnati at 1:52 p.m. and end at 4:24 p.m.

Even though Cincinnati isn't in the path of totality, we will still see a partial eclipse for 2 hours and 33 minutes. At the peak, the moon will obscure approximately 99.4% of the sun.

1:06 p.m.: Several Ohio state parks hit capacity ahead of solar eclipse

The following Ohio state parks have reached capacity for viewing Monday's solar eclipse, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR). The state has asked that visitors go to other locations for the eclipse instead.

• Mt. Gilead State Park.
• Van Buren State Park.
• Daughmer Prairie Savannah State Nature Preserve.
• Sheldon Marsh State Nature Preserve.
• Lawrence Woods State Nature Preserve.

12:24 p.m.: I-74 backed up as solar eclipse approaches

Traffic slowdowns and crashes are beginning to be reported on interstates 74, 71, 75 and 275 as  the time for the eclipse  grows closer. Traffic cameras show a significant backup on westbound I-74 from Dent to the I-74/I-275 split.

The  Ohio Department of Transportation  is warning drivers to plan ahead and expect heavy traffic due to the eclipse.

12:12 p.m.: The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium prepare for the solar eclipse

The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium are ready for unique research opportunities presented by Monday's total solar eclipse and will be studying animals throughout the day.

11:25 a.m.: Heading to an Ohio park for the eclipse? Make sure there's still space

At least one park along the eclipse's path of totality is already at capacity.

Lawrence Woods State Nature Preserve in Ridgeway, about 60 miles of Columbus and 30 miles southeast of Lima. was full as of 11:11 a.m., according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR). The state has asked that visitors go to other locations for the eclipse instead.

Lawrence Woods State Nature Preserve is one of 28 ODNR parks along the eclipse's path, according to the state agency.

9:45 a.m.: Miami Whitewater Forest starts to fill up

Enquirer trending editor David Wysong arrived to Miami Whitewater shortly after 7 a.m., and the park wasn't too busy. He even captured the video of the sun rise below.

However, the park started filling up between 9 and 10 a.m.

7:40 a.m.: Tips for eclipse viewing at Miami Whitewater Forest

Miami Whitewater Forest, which is in the path of totality, is expecting a lot of people to show up on Monday. Great Parks of Hamilton County shared these tips if you're planning to visit:

• Expect plenty of traffic and arrive early with a full tank of gas, water and food

• Rangers will close the park if they reach capacity. Satellite locations at Parky's Farm and Sharon Woods are open, but they're not in the path of totality.

• The park closes at sunset, so an immediate, large-scale exit isn't necessary.

Astronomy lovers, your time has come! The total solar eclipse , one of the biggest celestial events of the century, is here Monday.

The  National Weather Service  says the eclipse will start in Texas and make its way across the country, passing over states that include Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky and Indiana before arriving in Ohio. According to USA TODAY , nearly 500 cities in the U.S. are on the path of totality, including Cleveland and Toledo.

Cincinnati isn't in the  path of totality , but it will still see a partial eclipse lasting 2 hours and 33 minutes. At the peak of the eclipse, the moon will obscure approximately 99.4% of the sun.

What will the weather be like in Cincinnati for the solar eclipse?

The  NWS reports that dry conditions are in store for the solar eclipse Monday afternoon. Currently, the forecast calls for a slight chance of showers before 8 a.m. before the day becomes partly sunny, which should result in viewable conditions. Temperatures will reach the low 70s, with a high near 74.

Solar Eclipse traffic information for Greater Cincinnati

The Columbus Dispatch reports that Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) officials expect 150,000 to 575,000 visitors in the state April 8. To help emergency responders and residents prepare, ODOT created an interactive online map  forecasting traffic that day.

Where to get eclipse glasses in Greater Cincinnati

NASA doesn't approve any specific spectacles for eclipse viewing. However, the American Astronomical Society has  a list of approved vendors for eclipse glasses  and telescopes that can be purchased at many local retail stores, including Kroger, Meijer, Walmart and more.

But be careful because counterfeit glasses have flooded marketplaces for weeks leading up to the big event. If you're unsure whether your eclipse glasses are safe for viewing, check the International Organization for Standardization 12312-2 standard .

Where to watch the eclipse around Cincinnati

The closest city to Cincinnati where the total eclipse will be viewable is  Harrison , located just 20 miles northwest of the Queen City. There,  the total eclipse  will occur around 3:08 p.m.
