P&O Pre-Cruise Checklist

You’ve booked a P&O cruise and now it’s time to get ready, but where do you start? This comprehensive guide includes a P&O pre-cruise checklist to ensure you are prepared for your cruise. It’s been designed to take the stress out of getting ready to cruise and is especially useful for first-time cruisers.

My most recent cruise with P&O was in May 2023, so I have first-hand experience of cruising with P&O. This pre-cruise checklist for P&O Cruises has been compiled using guidance from the cruise line and things I’ve learnt from personal experience.

1. Check that your passport is valid and in date

Let’s start with the most important thing on this entire pre-cruise checklist – your passport. Check that your passport is valid and in date for the time of your cruise. You should have at least 6 months remaining on your passport after the date you return from your holiday.

After 31st December 2020, you will need at least 6 months on your passport when cruising in Europe. This is due to the completion of the Brexit transition period.

You will need sufficient blank pages for any entry and exit stamps (depending on your itinerary). If this is not the case, you need to give yourself plenty of time to renew or apply.

Don’t leave it until the last minute or you may not get your passport in time for your cruise! Here are some useful links to help:

  • Apply for your first adult passport
  • Renew or replace an adult passport
  • Apply for a child passport
  • Change your name or details on your passport
  • How to get a passport urgently

P&O Cruises recommends that you take a photocopy of your passport’s photo page with you on the cruise . This is in case it needs to be used by local immigration authorities.

2. Ensure your tickets match your passport

You need to check that the spellings of names on all cruise documents match your passport details. This may include flight details if you’ve booked a fly-cruise.

The simplest way to do this is to ensure that the details are correct at the time of booking, whether that’s with your travel agent or directly with P&O Cruises.

Pre-cruise information is sent to the lead guest approximately 8 to 9 weeks before departure if booked on the P&O Cruises Select Fare Rate. If you have booked the Early Saver, Late Saver or other promotional rates you can only access the documents via the Cruise Personaliser.

3. Arrange travel insurance

You should have travel insurance in place as soon as you have booked the cruise. Many people think that you only need travel insurance for the period of time you are on holiday but you need to have travel insurance in place from the time of booking to cover issues such as injury, a death in the family or anything else that may go wrong before the cruise that could stop you from going. More than half of travel insurance claims are for things that have prevented people from being able to travel.

P&O Cruises’s preferred partner for travel insurance is Holiday Extras.

p and o cruises before you sail

It’s important to make sure that you provide details of any pre-existing medical conditions. If you fail to do this, your travel insurance may be null and void.

p and o cruises before you sail

You may want to consider specific cruise travel insurance, which can compensate you for things such as missed ports and cabin confinement.

Take a look at this useful explanation from Emma, about travel insurance and the Coronavirus.

4. Complete your passport and insurance details online

This is crucial point on the P&O pre-cruise checklist. You must ensure that essential details such as your passport and insurance information are completed for everyone in your booking in the P&O Cruise Personaliser . You may also find an itinerary questionnaire to complete in this online area.

Pre-cruise information is available on your Cruise Personaliser from 12 weeks before departure. You must complete this information by the day before your cruise but I would highly recommend getting this done at least two weeks in advance.

5. Inform your bank/credit card company of your travel

To avoid fraud, some banks and credit card companies freeze your account if they see unusual spending patterns or locations of use. This protects you if your card has been stolen or cloned BUT if you are genuinely trying to use your card abroad, this may cause issues.

The best thing to do is check with your bank or credit card company to find out if you need to inform them of foreign travel. I had to do this for a Caribbean cruise once, which meant registering each port and date to ensure I could use my card. This is usually available via online banking. Thankfully my bank (Halifax) no longer requires me to do this.

pre-cruise checklist credit card

Whilst we are on the subject of credit cards, it may be worth considering a travel credit card like the Halifax Clarity Credit Card. The benefit of this card is the ability to use the card abroad with no transaction fee for currency conversion. You can also withdraw cash from ATM machines without being charged additional fees (unless it has a a standard fee like some in the UK do). This card along with a few others is recommended by Martin Lewis (see Moneysaving Expert for more advice).

6. Call your GP

You need to contact your G.P. at least six weeks before the cruise in case you need to arrange vaccinations (depending on your cruise itinerary).

Since the Coronavirus pandemic, it is likely that future passengers will need to bring an additional 14 days of medication in case of delays returning home. Make sure you pack enough for the duration of the cruise and 14 days more.

When it comes to packing, it may be sensible to keep medication in you hand luggage so you have it at all times.

7. Inform P&O Cruises of any medical information

Do you have a medical condition that has required treatment within six months of your cruise? It is important that as part of your pre-cruise checklist, you inform P&O Cruises in advance.

If you have a condition that necessitates you to use oxygen, electrical medical equipment, medical sharps, peritoneal kidney dialysis or special equipment, you should contact P&O Cruises to discuss on 0345 355 5111.

You may be asked to complete an Accessibility and Medical Questionnaire .

advice for pregnant pre-cruise checklist P&O Cruises

P&O Cruises will not allow pregnant women to cruise beyond 24 weeks. Prior to sailing, all pregnant passengers must produce a letter from their doctor or midwife to confirm that the mother and baby are in good health. The letter must state that they are fit to travel and the pregnancy is not high risk. This letter must also include the estimated due date calculated from the last menstrual period and ultrasound (if performed).

8. Ensure your luggage meets the criteria

No item of luggage should exceed 23kg. This limit is for the purposes of health and safety to protect the luggage porters from injury.

If you’re cruising from Southampton, there is no limit to the number of suitcases you can bring with you but remember, you must be able to store them in your cabin safely for the duration of the cruise. Two large suitcases will fit under a queen size bed.

If you have booked a fly-cruise with P&O, you should adhere the individual airline’s luggage restrictions.

Suitcases should be lockable and sturdy to withstand a considerable amount of handling on and off the cruise.

9. Check dress codes

When you are planning what clothes to take on your cruise, ensure you’ve checked the dress codes and pack accordingly. Fancy dress is generally not permitted on P&O ships unless for Halloween and Christmas events.

Caribbean cruises tend to include a Tropical Night so I’d recommend packing something colourful to wear for that evening. If not, you will easily be able to pick something up in one of the Caribbean ports during your cruise.

P&O pre-cruise checklist formal wear

The Gala Night and Black and White formal evenings are a chance to dress up in formal evening wear. Most passengers stick to black and white attire for both. Men wear dinner jackets with bow ties and some women wear long evening gowns (mostly in black). If you want to pack something suitable with minimal weight in your suitcase these little black dresses would be perfectly suitable.

If you have an 80’s Night detailed on your cruise itinerary, don’t worry about having to find suitable clothes, nobody dresses up for this evening.

10. Book parking and pre-cruise accommodation

An important point not to be missed on your P&O pre-cruise checklist is the booking of parking and accommodation.

If you’re cruising from Southampton, there is an array of parking options available to cruise ship passengers.

Southampton cruise parking

I would always advise you to arrive in port the day before your cruise to avoid any traffic problems or mishaps that mean you miss the cruise!

If you’re planning to travel to Southampton the day before your cruise, you may want to consider accommodation that offers cruise packages. They provide parking for the duration of your cruise as well as a handy shuttle service.

11. Print your E-tickets

Don’t forget to print your e-tickets and check the port check-in time. You can find them in your Cruise Personaliser.

Post Coronavirus, it’s going to be more and more important that you stick to your embarkation time so that P&O can avoid crowds and queues at the cruise terminal.

P&O pre-cruise checklist extras

So far I have discussed the essential tasks to remember before your P&O cruise but here are some extra things you may want to consider to personalise your cruise experience.

  • Drinks package
  • Spa treatments
  • Excursions*
  • Specialty dining reservations*

*I can personally recommend doing in advance

P&O excursions are reasonably priced and we did several on our last cruise. I typically book excursions independently but we booked most of our excursions through P&O Cruises. Book in advance to avoid popular tours becoming fully booked.

P&O shore excursion chocolate making St Lucia

I left pre-purchasing my Wifi until it was too late and had to pay more once I got onboard the ship. You can pre-pay for Wifi up until four days before the cruise. If you’re planning to get it, it’s cheaper to pay in advance via your Cruise Personaliser.

I booked The Limelight Club for two evenings of our cruise. You can see the acts who will be performing on your cruise up to 12 weeks before you sail. I didn’t book any of the other specialty dining venues before I got onboard and reservations were limited.

P&O Limelight Club

Final thoughts and free printable checklist

My top tip for getting ready for your next cruise with P&O is to work through this pre-checklist and leave plenty of time to do things such as renew passports and research excursions.

Leaving things until the last minute can create unnecessary stress before your holiday and cost you more money.

I have created a handy printable pre-cruise checklist you can download, which includes recommended times to complete tasks.

A free P&O Pre-cruise checklist printable to help you plan a stress free cruise with P&O Cruises. This post includes the key things you need to do before a cruise.

P&O Cruises - Ship destination

P&O Cruises are an all-time-favourite cruise line in the UK, offering exciting itineraries to a variety of destinations. Whether you’re new to cruising or a seasoned expert, here is a small guide on what to expect on a cruise with P&O.

Before you sail

What does P&O stand for?

P&O is an abbreviation of the company’s full name, The Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company. Established in 1837, the cruise line was initially used to carry mail by sea, with the ‘O’ added for Oriental in 1840 as the company extended its service to Egypt and Asia.

Can I take a solo cruise on P&O?

Yes, solo cabins are offered on Azura, Arcadia, Aurora, Britannia, Oriana and Ventura. These range from Single Inside Cabins to Single Sea View Cabins and Single Balcony Cabins.

Solo cruising on-board P&O

What is included in my fare?

There are three fares to choose from when booking with P&O: Select, Early Saver and Saver. With all guests receiving:

  • Full-board accommodation – Dining includes breakfast, lunch and five-course dinner, meals and snacks from 24-hour buffets and informal restaurants, as well as afternoon tea – Drinks include tea, coffee, water and juices
  • Entertainment
  • Sports facilities – Full use of football, tennis and basketball courts – Use of swimming pools and whirlpool spas – Fully equipped gym
  • Children’s Clubs – Full access to age specific children’s clubs – Night Nursery for under 5’s
  • Flights – These are offered from London, with flights from other regional airports available on selected cruises – Coach transfers between the airport and ship on embarkation and disembarkation dates are also included

Do you get better deals with P&O if you book last minute or early?

With a last minute deal, you’ll be able to take advantage of a good price, but won’t have as many options when it comes to when you want to travel, your itinerary and choice of stateroom. Booking early means you’ll have more choice and you’ll often be able to take advantage of early booking savings.

How much luggage can I bring with me?

When sailing round-trip from Southampton the luggage limit is 23kg. Fly cruises are slightly different, due to the airport restrictions. With these options, your luggage limit is between 20kg and 23kg, but you will need to confirm this with your airline beforehand.

On-board your ship

What facilities are in my cabin?

Standard facilities include:

  • Daily steward service
  • TV, radio and telephone
  • Refrigerator
  • Tea/coffee making facilities
  • Air conditioning
  • Vanity/writing desk and chair
  • Wardrobe and drawer space
  • Toiletries pack (including shampoo, conditioner, moisturising lotion, soap and shower cap)

There are ironing stations in each of the laundrettes on-board P&O and a pressing service. However, ironing and ironing boards are not permitted to be brought on-board with you.

If you’re looking to charge mobile devices on-board, standard UK three pin plug sockets are in every cabin across the P&O fleet.

What’s the difference between Freedom Dining and Fixed Dining?

Epicurean Restaurant - P&O Cruises

Freedom Dining means that there’s no fixed seating or meal times, whereas fixed dining means that you’ll have the same table at the same time each evening.

Is there free Wi-Fi on-board P&O?

All of P&O’s ships are Wi-Fi enabled, allowing you to access the internet when sailing. Packages can be purchased pre-cruise or on-board, starting at £6.75 for the Connect Package.

How much does The Retreat cost on P&O?

Azura, Britannia and Ventura each offer spa packages, where you can also utilise the open-air facilities of The Retreat. These start at £20 per day, with access to the Thermal Suite also included.

Is there an adults-only pool on-board P&O?

There are three P&O ships which are exclusively for adults: Arcadia, Oriana and Aurora. Additional ships, which are open to children, also offer adult-only pools including Azura, Oceana and Ventura.

Couple on-board P&O

What is the dress code on-board P&O?

The dress code only applies to the evenings, during the day is the same as any other holiday. There are two dress codes on-board P&O:

  • Evening Casual – Stylish resort or leisurewear including dresses or casual separates for ladies and open-neck polo shirts and long trousers for men. No trainers, football shirts or tracksuits.
  • Black Tie – Ladies wear cocktail dresses, ball gowns or smart trouser suits, while men wear dinner jackets, tuxedos or a business suit.

As of January 2018, guests are no longer allowed to wear fancy dress, novelty items or inappropriate personalised clothing on-board. Swimsuits are not permitted in the lounges, interior bars, restaurants or reception areas, and a shirt and suitable footwear are required while indoors and using the buffet restaurants.

Destinations you reach

Does P&O offer world cruises?

Yes, Arcadia offers a 99-night circumnavigation of the globe sailing to 23 countries. Whilst, Aurora sails on a Grand Tour to South America, the USA and Caribbean.

P&O also offers exotic fly-cruises on a schedule that suits you, spanning 17-42 nights, and the cruise line also offers Classic Southern Hemisphere sailings where you’ll visit as many as 20 ports up to 61-nights long.

P&O Cruises - Ship destination

Where does a P&O mini cruise to Guernsey stop?

Mini cruises to Guernsey stop at the St Peter Port, a pretty town with fine architecture, terraced gardens and winding streets.

How much do excursions cost on P&O?

There are excursions for everyone’s budget on-board P&O, ranging from a paddle boarding experience in Bilbao (£55 per adult / £35 per child), golf on the slopes of Mt Etna (from £175) or exploring Dubrovnik by tuk-tuk (£49 per adult / £42 per child).

Before you travel with P&O Cruises

Before you set sail on your P&O Cruises ship, it's important you know everything you need to do before you depart. Below we have pulled together some useful information for you to read ahead of your trip to ensure you have a stress-free cruise holiday.

Arrival & Departure

Pre-cruise excitement can be so hard to contain that sometimes it’s easy to forget about organising the most important things. The last thing we want is for you to miss the ship (definitely not boat) so we’ve got some handy tips and information to make sure you get to the wharf right on time.

Sometimes it’s nice to go your own way. If you’re arriving to your homeport prior to the day you board the ship or if you’ve made your own air or hotel arrangements then you must make your own way to the ship. If you need special assistance at embarkation please advise our Cruise Contact Center at least 60 days before cruising. Accessibility may be restricted in your port of embarkation or disembarkation.

Guests arriving at the ship independently

Leave your luggage at the baggage drop off area when you arrive at the wharf. Make sure you’ve filled in your luggage tags correctly an attached them to each of your bags. Luggage tags can be printed from Cruise Control.

Guests arriving on P&O Cruises’ arranged flights

If you arrive on a P&O flight grab your luggage from the baggage carousel at the airport. Please book your transfers separately as this is not included in your flight cost. If you have booked a transfer with P&O, a representative holding a P&O sign will be there to get your attention and they’ll show you to the coach for transfer, with your luggage, directly to the wharf. Please make sure you have correctly filled in and attached the P&O cruises luggage tags to assist us in transporting your luggage.

Things don’t always go to plan. If you encounter unforeseen flight or weather-related delays on sailing day, we suggest you immediately advise an airline representative at the airport that you’re a cruise guest destined for sailing that day. The airline may be able to arrange alternative flights for guests to continue with their travel to the point of embarkation (charges may apply). Once your new flight details have been confirmed, please contact us on 13 24 94 (AU) or 0800 780 716 (NZ).

Ship delays

If there is a significant delay to your cruise check-in or departure, we will notify you via email and SMS to the email address and mobile number provided in your booking. To make sure you can receive any important updates about your cruise, simply update your email address and mobile number in Cruise Control.

AFTER YOUR CRUISE

We make leaving the ship as easy as possible. We stagger your disembarkation and help you move quickly through Customs. More details

If you’re not sure where your cruise begins and ends, it’s not a problem. We’ve got you covered. More details

Tourist Refund Scheme (TRS)

The TRS enables you to claim a refund for the Goods and Services Tax (GST) and Wine Equalisation Tax (WET) that you paid on goods you have purchased in Australia. For international cruises departing from Australia you can claim the TRS from Customs at embarkation after you have checked-in. For cruises departing for New Zealand, this can be done at the last Australian Port. For more information, please refer to the Australian Customs Service website, www.customs.gov.au . For purchases in New Zealand there is no provision for travellers to obtain a refund of GST on their goods when they leave the country.

Pre book Restaurants

Cool Cruiser

Is it possible to pre book Restaurants on Iona on line before a cruise.

I would like to book Epicurian and Sindu but it just says on cruise personaliser “ Enquire onboard”. This seems a bit late if you want to book the evening you board.

I'm cruising on Britannia in 15 days and mine all say 'Enquire onboard' too.

I think they're wanting people to use the mobile web-app onboard to book whilst onboard so they can manage venue capacity in real-time.

Thanks, that seems a sensible option for them.

We join Britannia on Thursday. It was reported that they were offering 50% discount on the first night and lots of spaces available. We hope that is the case.

See you on board!  I have heard the same from multiple different sources on various staycations for first night deals.  Have only ever tried the Beach House before, and after having my ARFID therapy last year, my food options have expanded massively.  No sure if to try Sindhu or Epicurean?

Beech House was not open last week due to the way they were running the buffet.

We have another booked for 8th August, but 4 nights, so we can sample all of them again. Our ( so I'm informed ) favourite is Sindhu, but I like Epicurean and the beach house and glass house, so with a couple of MDR's, we still have a spare night. Betting is on another Sindhu 🤣

Haha

We booked Sindhu as soon as we boarded using the my holiday "app", it was £17.00 cover charge for the two of us, that was a couple of weeks ago.

1 minute ago, Stu UK said: Beech House was not open last week due to the way they were running the buffet.

That's another spare then. I will put my foot down on a 3rd visit to Sindhu, but it could happen.

Thanks. I wonder what DW will spend the saving on 🤔

debsjc

Are the prices for the speciality restaurants listed anywhere, I couldn't find them online.... thanks

Epicurean is £28 pp, Limelight Club £25.00  Sindu is now a la carte.

On the first Seacation speciality dining was 50% discount, for first night only they charged a cover charge of £8:50pp for Sindu.

Thank you, do you know about The Beach House & The Glass House please?

Glass house is a la carte very reasonable, The Beach House hasn’t been open, but was £7.50 with a few dishes having additional supplement.

Thanks again

Cruise ship drink package price hack that travel agent swears by

Cruise ship drink package price hack that travel agent swears by

Drinks packages can cost around £55 a day on royal caribbean and p&o cruises.

Tom Earnshaw

Tom Earnshaw

Cruise ship drink packages are a certified way to make your holiday sailing around the world that little bit more expensive.

But there's a simple, above board trick that you can take upon yourself to bring that price right down.

There is an ongoing debate in the travelling world as to whether drinks packages are even worth it in the first place - or rather, when they become worth it .

For those who don't know, when you book a cruise ship holiday you're given the option of paying a la carte for your drinks or paying for packages. This is where you cough up a day rate, with a number of packages available depending on what you're after.

To provide a bit of context, it'll set you back around £30 a day for the non-alcoholic package with Royal Caribbean. On P&O, it's about £25.

If you're after booze on top of your tea, coffee and soft drinks, it'll be between £50 and £56 on Royal Caribbean. Again, on P&O it's between £44.95 and £54.95.

It's one of several costs which can make the price of your cruise skyrocket.

Over on TikTok , one account called The Paradise Travel Group offers consistent advice on the best ways to enjoy your holidays while also saving cash where possible.

Run by Elisa, her explainers are viewed by thousands of people on a daily basis.

Elisa on her TikTok (TikTok / @theparadisetravelgroup)

On the topic of cruise ship drink packages, Elisa is clear as day that you can save cash even if you'd paid months before you set sail.

"If you purchased a drink package for your upcoming cruise you're going to want to hear this," she says in one video.

"I'm Elisa, certified travel agent and certified cruise lover.

"Here to make sure you're setting yourself up for success on your next cruise. We all want the best deal, right?

"Well when you book your cruise and you pre-purchase that drink package what the cruise lines don't want you to know is that the price of that drink package is very likely to go on sale before you sail."

Fear not if you've already booked or plan on booking early to get it ticked off your itinerary as you can still take advantage of this, usually right up until the week before you set sail.

Delicious (Getty Stock Images)

Elisa says: "Even though you already paid you are not locked in to that rate.

"So when you catch that drink package sale - and you've seen the cruise line websites, they will put on a sale for literally any reason - give your travel agent a call and they can bring you down to that lower price."

In another video, she explains: "It's always cheaper to purchase the drink package before your cruise but the day on which you purchase it might be a bit more expensive than two weeks later when they throw in a great sale.

"A lot of people don't know that these cruise add ons are refundable. So if you purchase the drink package and then three weeks go by... you find the drink package has dropped in price you can cancel your drink package and rebook it for the new lower rate. You can do this up until the week before the cruise."

Please drink responsibly. If you want to discuss any issues relating to alcohol in confidence, contact Drinkline on 0300 123 1110, 9am–8pm weekdays and 11am–4pm weekends for advice and support.
