American Express offers dozens of different types of cards, but most AmEx cards don't include lounge access.

Not surprisingly, AmEx's premium travel cards offer the best AmEx lounge access benefits. Both The Platinum Card® from American Express and The Business Platinum Card® from American Express include access to AmEx Centurion Lounges as well as the vast AmEx Global Lounge Collection that includes more than 1,400 lounges worldwide. In addition, several airline and hotel co-branded credit cards offer some sort of American Express lounge access. Each card has its own limitations and restrictions, but here's a quick overview:

Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card and the Delta SkyMiles® Reserve Business American Express Card : Complimentary access to Centurion Lounges and Escape Lounges. For Delta Sky Clubs, cardholders will receive 15 visits per program year beginning Feb. 1, 2025. Members can earn unlimited visits after spending $75,000 on the card in a calendar year. Once earned, unlimited visits will last through Jan. 31 of the following year.

The Hilton Honors American Express Business Card : 10 free visits to Priority Pass lounges*. After the 10 visits, cardholders will be charged a guest fee equal to the guest fee on the Priority Pass Standard Plus membership (currently $35). Enrollment required.

Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant® American Express® Card : Unlimited Priority Pass Select membership. Enrollment required.

If you find yourself at an airport without a Centurion Lounge, you can still benefit from the American Express Global Lounge collection as discussed below.

Centurion Lounge access is the marquee lounge benefit of premium AmEx cards. However, Centurion Lounges are just a small subset of the many lounges available to eligible cardmembers through American Express lounge access benefits.

Access to the American Express Global Lounge Collection is a benefit available to Platinum and Centurion cardmembers, and it includes entry to more than 1,400 airport lounges worldwide. Here are some of the lounge brands that are part of this extensive collection:

AmEx and Delta are close partners — especially when it comes to American Express lounge access. Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card and Delta SkyMiles® Reserve Business American Express Card cardmembers can access Centurion Lounge locations when flying on a same-day Delta marketed or operated flight in the U.S., Hong Kong or London. Likewise, certain AmEx cardmembers get access to Delta Sky Club lounges. Terms apply.

Complimentary Delta Sky Club access is granted when the following types of cardmembers are traveling on a same-day Delta-marketed or Delta-operated flight:

Centurion Cards.

Effective 2/1/25, Reserve Card Members will receive 15 visits per year to the Delta Sky Club. To earn an unlimited number of visits each year, the total eligible purchases on the Card must equal $75,000 or more the previous year. To earn unlimited visits in 2025, you’ll need to spend this amount between 1/1/24 and 12/31/24.

Similar to the Reserve card, the AmEx Platinum cards will also be limited in the number of Sky Club visits starting in February 2025. Cardholders will only receive 10 complimentary Delta Sky Club visits per year unless they spend $75,000 on the card in a calendar year.

Just because your American Express card has lounge access doesn't mean you'll necessarily get into the lounge. Each type of lounge in the AmEx Global Lounge Collection has a slightly different policy about when eligible cardmembers can enter.

For example, Centurion Lounge access requires that you're within three hours of the stated departure time on your same-day, confirmed boarding pass. You'll need to show that boarding pass along with your eligible AmEx card and your government-issued identification at the lounge reception to enter. Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card and Delta SkyMiles® Reserve Business American Express Card customers must be flying on a same-day Delta-marketed or operated flight to get access. Other eligible AmEx cardmembers simply need to be on any confirmed flight.

Likewise, at some other lounges in the AmEx Global Lounge Collection, you need to show your eligible card, I.D. and boarding pass to access your AmEx lounge benefits.

However, AmEx cardholders have to take the extra step of enrolling their card to access Priority Pass lounges. Once you enroll, you'll need to wait for your Priority Pass Select card to arrive in the mail before you can access Priority Pass lounges . Be sure to enroll your eligible AmEx card well ahead of your next trip.

If you want to access AmEx lounges when traveling, you'll want to familiarize yourself with the various ways to get in. Different American Express cards offer lounge access, and the entry policy depends on the card you have.

AmEx offers Platinum Card members a dedicated website that makes it easy to find which airport lounges they can access. Other AmEx cardmembers will need to read the benefits of their card closely. If your AmEx card includes Priority Pass membership, don't forget to enroll well ahead of your next trip so that you have time to receive your membership card in the mail.

The Platinum Card and Business Platinum Card provide excellent lounge access benefits, but the specific rules can be confusing. Let’s break it down.

The American Express Platinum Card and the Business Platinum Card are marketed as premium travel rewards cards, and one of the benefits that makes them worth their salt, especially with their recent annual fee increase, is the airport lounge access that cardholders enjoy.

The lounge access rules on these cards, however, can get quite confusing to people trying to make use of these benefits. While it’s certainly complex, it’s useful to understand the eligibility rules, access fees, and guesting privileges on the Canadian-issued Amex Platinum cards so you can make the most out of the perks.

The complicating factor is that the benefit isn’t just simply access to one set of airport lounges. In reality, the Platinum cards bestow many types of lounge access, all of which are treated as part of the American Express Global Lounge Collection :

• Priority Pass
• Plaza Premium Lounges
• American Express Centurion Lounges
• International American Express Lounges
• Delta Sky Club
• Miscellaneous lounges (Aspire, Escape, Swissport, YQB Jean Lesage) 

1. Priority Pass

Both the Platinum Card and the Business Platinum Card provide you with a complimentary Priority Pass Select membership, which grants free, unlimited access to worldwide Priority Pass lounges. However, a “Select” membership excludes most restaurants and experiences, such as game rooms and sleeping pods.

Also included is complimentary access for one guest per lounge visit.

The “prevailing retail rate” is currently $35 (USD) for every additional guest, which will be automatically billed to your credit card.

There are over 1,000 Priority Pass lounges worldwide, so this perk should guarantee you some form of lounge access on the vast majority of your travels, especially if you don’t always fly in business class.

Included in the roster of Priority Pass lounges are the well-regarded Chase Sapphire Lounges, which despite being branded by a competing financial institution, are open to any Priority Pass member. 

Keep in mind, however, that for Chase Sapphire Lounges in the US, non-Chase Priority Pass members may only access each lounge once per calendar year without a guest. Any subsequent access is billed at $75 (USD) per person, per visit. The Chase Sapphire Lounge in Hong Kong, however, doesn’t have any restrictions.

If you’re a Platinum or Business Platinum cardholder, be sure to get in the habit of looking up which Priority Pass lounges you’ll be able to visit prior to your trip. You’re better off doing so through the Priority Passs app, where your membership is registered, so you know exactly which lounges are included with your Select membership.

To access Priority Pass lounges, be sure to have your physical membership card or your membership QR code on the app in hand, as your American Express card cannot be used directly for access.

2. Plaza Premium Lounges

If you hold either the Platinum Card or the Business Platinum Card, you have unlimited access to Plaza Premium lounges within Canada and internationally for yourself and one guest. There are over 50 Plaza Premium lounges worldwide.

What are Plaza Premium lounges? While Priority Pass is a global lounge network, Plaza Premium is more like a “franchise” or a “brand” of airport lounges, which started in Hong Kong back in the 1990s.

Plaza Premium lounges have a decent footprint in Canada, with lounges in Vancouver , Edmonton , Winnipeg , Toronto , and Montreal .

Plaza Premium lounges certainly aren’t luxurious by any stretch of the imagination, but they’re solid enough and stack up against Air Canada’s Maple Leaf Lounges quite well.

Internationally, Plaza Premium lounges can be quite competitive indeed. Some lounges have showers, and you’ll usually find that the food selection is much better than in many of the North American lounges.

To access Plaza Premium Lounges, you may hand over your Platinum Card directly, or you may use your Priority Pass membership. Note that using your Platinum Card grants you longer access at Plaza Premium Lounges than your Priority Pass membership.

3. The Centurion Lounge

American Express is a global company, and in order to reinforce the premium image of their Platinum line of credit cards, they’ve opened special lounges in airports worldwide specifically for Platinum cardholders, known as Centurion Lounges.

Holders of Platinum or Business Platinum products, issued in any country, can access these lounges.

Centurion Lounges are located in the following US and global airports:

United States

• Charlotte (CLT)
• Dallas (DFW)
• Denver (DEN)
• Houston (IAH)
• Las Vegas (LAS)
• Los Angeles (LAX)
• Miami (MIA)
• New York-JFK (JFK)
• New York-LaGuardia (LGA)
• Philadelphia (PHL)
• Phoenix (PHX)
• San Francisco (SFO)
• Seattle (SEA)
• Hong Kong (HKG)
• London (LHR)

Alongside some of the top-tier Priority Pass locations, the Centurion Lounges are probably some of the best lounges that your Platinum credit card can unlock.

In general, you can expect top-quality food and drink inspired by regional tastes and stylish interiors drawn from local design principles. Centurion Lounges are typically very pleasant places to spend time and relax prior to your flight.

The best part about the Centurion Lounge benefit is the generous guest policy: each Platinum or Business Platinum cardholder is allowed to bring in two guests for free!

This is fantastic for families travelling together, although the downside is that Centurion Lounges can get rather crowded during the peak hours of the day.

Note that the US-issued Platinum cards implemented changes to their guest access policy as of February 1, 2023: guest access is longer allowed, and you’ll instead be charged at $50 (USD) per guest (or $30 (USD) for children aged 17 or under).

There hasn’t been any updates to the Canadian-issued Platinum cards’ Centurion Lounge guest access rules as of yet. We’ll be sure to update this section if we find out more.

4. International American Express Lounges

In addition to Centurion Lounges, there are also a handful of lounges around the world that are operated under the American Express banner, but are not part of the Centurion Lounge network.

You can find these lounges in the following cities:

• Buenos Aires (EZE)
• Delhi (DEL)
• Melbourne (MEL)
• Mexico City (MEX)
• Monterrey (MTY)
• Mumbai (BOM)
• São Paulo (GRU)
• Stockholm (ARN)
• Sydney (SYD)

The Pontus in the Air Lounge in Stockholm is quite memorable in particular, since it offers a generous complimentary à la carte dining option to lounge guests, despite being housed in a makeshift partitioned-off area within an airport restaurant.

Meanwhile, the Buenos Aires Amex lounge has ice-cream sandwiches as well as plenty of liquor, but it doesn’t have any hot food. So, you may want to choose the Star Alliance Lounge next door, which was also available on Priority Pass, for a better experience.

In general, expect the international American Express lounges to be relatively high-quality lounges, although perhaps a step below the flagship Centurion Lounges in the US, London, and Hong Kong.

Platinum and Business Platinum cardholders are allowed to bring at least one guest into the international American Express lounges – the exact guest policy varies from location to location.

For example, while the Stockholm location allows one guest only, the Buenos Aires lounge actually allows one complimentary guest plus any children under the age of 16.

5. Delta Sky Club

American Express Platinum cardholders enjoy complimentary access to Delta Sky Clubs when in possession of a same-day boarding pass with Delta Air Lines. However, as of January 1, 2024, you won’t get access if you’re travelling on a Basic Economy (E) ticket.

They generally offer some light snacks, beverages, and lighter food options, as well as TV, newspapers and magazines, and free Wi-Fi. In general, Delta Sky Clubs aren’t going to blow your socks off, but are pleasant enough places to kill some time before your flight.

Since Delta Sky Clubs are primarily meant to cater to Delta and SkyTeam elite members, the guest access policy for Platinum cardholders are stricter than the other lounges.

While it’s not specified on the Canadian or American Amex Global Lounge Collection pages, the Delta Sky Club site specifies the following guest access policy:

As a Platinum cardholder accessing a Delta Sky Club before your Delta flight, you’re not entitled to bring in any guests for free, but rather have the option of paying for their access at $50 (USD) per person.

Note that any guests must also be travelling on a Delta flight departing on the same day.

6. Miscellaneous Lounges

Lastly, there’s a handful of miscellaneous lounge networks that are also signed up with American Express to provide access to Platinum cardholders. These include:

The Escape Lounges in Bradley (BDL), Cincinnati-Northern Kentucky (CVG), Columbus (CMH), Fort Lauderdale (FLL), Greenville-Spartanburg (GSP), Minneapolis/St. Paul (MSP), Oakland (OAK), Palm Beach (PBI), Phoenix-Sky Harbour (PHX), Reno-Tahoe (RNO), Rhode Island (PVD), and Sacramento (SMF)

These are basically additional contracts that Amex has secured in order to provide high-quality lounge access at a few airports where coverage is otherwise lacking.

As you can imagine, the guest policy varies for each of these lounge networks. You can find them summarized in the below chart:

Worldwide lounge access is a key benefit on both the American Express Platinum Card and the American Express Business Platinum Card . This benefit affords cardholders a more comfortable experience at the airport before a flight.

With so many different lounge providers, the lounge access policies are definitely more opaque than they need to be.

It’s useful to keep the American Express Lounge Finder around as a handy bookmark, which should help you identify the lounges at a certain airport that you have access to as a Platinum cardholder, as well as the relevant access and guesting rules.

The American Express Platinum is one of the most popular travel and lifestyle cards, offering access to premium services globally. When it comes to lounges, however, the card will get you into a staggering number of facilities, including some exclusive partners like Delta and Lufthansa. Here's a list of lounges you can access with the Platinum card.

Centurion Lounges

At the top of the list has to be Amex's own Centurion Lounges. While primarily based in North America, with the most in the US, the luxury lounges have been expanding in recent years, and now include London Heathrow, Stockholm, New Delhi, Hong Kong, Syndey, and more. The Platinum will get you access to all of these lounges along with two guests traveling on the same day (note that US cardholders now have to hit a minimum spend to unlock free guests).

Each lounge varies in size, each lounge includes showers, a fully-stocked bar, plenty of food options (buffet-style), business areas to work, and comfortable seating. While overcrowding has been an issue in recent times, visiting at off-peak hours makes for a relaxing experience. Having visited the New York (JFK) lounge recently, the space is large and calm (right prior to closing) and a step above the usual membership lounges.

Lufthansa Business & Senator Lounges

If you're traveling in Europe, or at major airports in Asia and the Middle East, you have access to Lufthansa lounges. Those traveling economy or premium economy can access the Business Class Lounges, while those in business can use the Senator Lounges. This perk can be valuable during long layovers, giving you access to a shower, working spaces, nap areas, and food at most facilities. In Frankfurt or Munich, both airline hubs, you have the chance to peruse through multiple facilities and find the best one.

Note that you can't bring any guests with your Platinum card and you must be flying a Lufthansa Group airline, with a valid boarding pass, to access the lounge. This does narrow the scope of access but is still a great option if you fly frequently with Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian, Eurowings, or Brussels Airlines.

Delta Sky Clubs

If you're in the US (or Tokyo Haneda Airport), your Platinum card will get you into Delta's growing list of Sky Clubs. Once again, you'll need to have a same-day Delta ticket and no guests are allowed, though you can buy two guest passes for $50 each. Delta has invested heavily in the last few years to upgrade its lounge offerings and with no dedicated business class lounges (until 2024), these facilities are impressive, especially newly opened ones at Minneapolis-St Paul, Kansas City, Newark, JFK Terminal 4, Nashville, and many more.

Priority Pass & Priority Pass Select lounges

Depending on where your Amex Platinum is issued, you'll receive a Priority Pass or Priority Pass Select. Both cards get you access to over 1,200 lounges globally. As we've discussed in detail before, the quality of lounges can vary significantly by location and operator, so it is hard to judge beforehand. However, the program also partners up with airlines and alliance lounges at non-peak times, allowing you to access facilities like the Virgin Atlantic Clubhouse (JFK), Air-France KLM Lounge (IAD), or the SkyTeam Lounge (DXB).

Plaza Premium Lounges

While Priority Pass and Plaza Premium have returned as partners, Platinum cardholders have had access to all Plaza Premium lounges. You're usually allowed to bring one adult guest though this might vary by lounge. With over 80 lounges at 30 airports globally, Plaza Premium has made a name for itself for consistency and is usually better or on par with other pay-per-used lounges at airports. Moreover, Platinum cardholders also get access to some facilities managed by the group, including the Virgin Atlantic Clubhouse at Washington Dulles.

American Express also has partnerships with Escape and Airspace lounges at smaller airports. In total, you're unlikely to end up with a lack of choice at major airports globally, with over 1,300 locations, and dozens of premium facilities. Supplementary cardholders (or authorized users) receive the same benefit, allowing one Platinum cardholders to allow multiple guests on one trip.

Please keep in mind that trying to count lounges is like trying to count a large herd of sheep; you’re bound to miss some and count others twice. Some lounges have closed, some have reopened, and new lounges may be added. Not all lounges in a network may grant access using our featured cards, some lounges are affiliated with more than 1 network, and lounge network affiliations can change.

However, even with these variables, the end result is the same — one of our featured cards offers greater lounge access than the other.

Lounge Network Comparison Summary

Aspire lounge (3).

Priority Pass cardmembers flying out of Ontario (ONT) or San Diego (SAN) can enjoy access to the Aspire Lounge network. The lounge offers showers, complimentary snacks, and non-alcoholic beverages. Beer, wine, cocktails, and food items are available for purchase.

Cardmembers receive an up to $10 food and beverage certificate when entering.

Just show your card along with a same-day boarding pass and ID to enter. You can bring up to 2 guests at no additional charge.

Chase Sapphire Lounge by The Club (2)

Chase Sapphire Lounge by The Club currently only has 2 locations open — Hong Kong (HKG) and Boston (BOS) . These premium lounges are part of the Priority Pass network like The Club lounges are today. We should see additional locations opening soon.

Primary cardmembers and authorized users of the Chase Sapphire Reserve card who have activated their complimentary Priority Pass lounge access can enter the lounge. Cardholders may bring up to 2 guests per Priority Pass membership card, per visit, for free, and additional guests for $27.

Note that Amex Platinum cardholders who are enrolled Priority Pass members will only be able to enter a  domestic  Sapphire Lounge by The Club location  1 time at no cost per calendar year  and will be charged a  $75 entry fee  upon each subsequent visit to any location within the Sapphire Lounge by The Club network. The Hong Kong lounge is open to Priority Pass members and their eligible guests without the visit limitation.

Lufthansa Lounges (30)

Lufthansa has a broad worldwide network of dozens of lounges both in the U.S. and internationally.

Chase Sapphire Reserve cardholders have access to several Lufthansa Lounges via their Priority Pass membership.

Amex Platinum cardmembers flying same day on Lufthansa Group flights in any class of ticket can access participating Lufthansa Business Lounges. Members flying on Lufthansa Group flights in business class may access participating Lufthansa Senator Lounges. As not all of the Lufthansa Lounges are participating, we’ve estimated access to around 30 of the approximate 50 lounges (see the lounge locator for participating).

To access Lufthansa Lounges, you will need to show your eligible card, a same-day boarding pass for Lufthansa, SWISS, or Austrian Airlines, and a government-issued ID. Some lounge properties will allow you to bring guests for a fee.

Plaza Premium Lounges (130+)

Holders of either card who travel internationally will appreciate having access to any of the over 130  Plaza Premium Lounges worldwide. Cardmembers can access Plaza Premium Lounges regardless of airline or flight class with their eligible card and same-day boarding pass. Amex Platinum cardholders can show their physical card, while Chase Sapphire Reserve cardmembers can show their Priority Pass card.

Priority Pass Lounges (1,400+)

With more than 1,400 lounges and lounge alternative properties, Priority Pass is by far the largest lounge network. The value of a Priority Pass membership that provides complimentary lounge access is at least $469 each year (the cost of purchasing a direct membership), as this purchased pass will not include any complimentary guest access (+$35 each guest per visit).

The complimentary Priority Pass Select membership found on both cards includes access for the cardmember plus 2 guests at no extra charge. The membership with the Amex Platinum card grants access to only airport lounge properties and not participating lounge alternative Priority Pass restaurant venues, Minute Suites, Be Relax, or Gameway video lounges (which the Chase Sapphire Reserve card does).

You must first enroll in your membership via your online card account under the benefits section. You’ll then receive a Priority Pass membership card in the mail that you will use to access lounge properties.

Show your boarding pass for a same-day flight on any airline, your ID, and your Priority Pass card or digital card  to gain access.

Hot Tip: Several credit cards offer Priority Pass Select membership or a set amount of 1-time visit passes each year. Here are some of the best credit cards with Priority Pass access. 

Virgin Clubhouses (5)

Virgin Clubhouses are known for their stylish décor, delicious food selection, on-site mixologists, and personal amenities. Holders of either card can access select Virgin Clubhouse locations that participate in the Priority Pass or Plaza Premium Lounge networks.

Cardmembers must show their card and same-day boarding pass to enter and can bring up to 2 guests.

The Amex Platinum card (and the business version, The Business Platinum Card ® from American Express ) offers a wide variety of lounge selections, both in the U.S. and internationally. With the card in your wallet, you’ll be able to find a lounge in most major airports.

Let’s look at some of the options in the Amex Global Lounge Collection that you’ll have during your travels.

Centurion Lounges (27)

One of the most prestigious lounge networks available with the Amex Platinum card is the Centurion network of lounges. Centurion Lounges take pride in serving featured local food items, complimentary high-speed Wi-Fi, and personal amenities such as spa services and showers. Amenities will vary by location.

There are 10+ lounges in the U.S.  and the number continues to increase. You’ll find Centurion Lounges when you travel internationally as well, with 10+ additional properties worldwide .

Amex Platinum cardholders can enter all Centurion Lounges, and cardmembers may enter with up to 2 complimentary guests if they have spent $75,000 in eligible purchases in a calendar year, otherwise, a guest day pass can be purchased for $50 per adult or $30 per child between the ages of 2 and 17.

You will need to show your Amex Platinum card and same-day boarding pass.

Hot Tip: You can add up authorized users to your Amex Platinum card for $195 per card (see rates & fees ). Authorized users have full access to all the lounges in the American Express Global Lounge Collection, including Centurion Lounges. 

Delta Sky Club (50)

Delta Sky Club offers free premium Wi-Fi, a large selection of hot and cold food items, snacks, complimentary beer, wine, cocktails, non-alcoholic beverages, and premium alcoholic beverages for purchase. With an individual Sky Club membership costing $695 annually, having complimentary lounge access via the Amex Platinum card is a nice benefit if Delta is your preferred airline.

Amex Platinum cardmembers will have access to most Delta Sky Clubs when traveling the same day on Delta flights (ticket numbers that begin with 006). Just present your Amex Platinum card and your Delta boarding pass to enter. You can gain access for up to 2 guests, who are also traveling on Delta, for a fee (currently $50 for each guest).

Escape Lounges — The Centurion Studio Partner (14)

The Escape Lounges network is expanding, now with 15 total properties. Each location features cuisine developed by a local chef, a dedicated mixologist, and a locally crafted beer selection.

Amex Platinum cardmembers can fly on any airline to enjoy access to Escape Lounges. The cardholder can bring 2 additional guests and children under 24 months at no cost.

You will need your Amex Platinum card, same-day boarding pass, and ID to enter.

Bottom Line: The Amex Platinum card offers the American Express Global Lounge Collection, featuring a stellar lineup of airport lounges that can be accessed with the card. Cardmembers will have access to more than 1,400 properties worldwide. 

You won’t find a long list of lounge networks partnering with the Chase Sapphire Reserve card , but you’ll still find more than 1,400 lounges and lounge alternative properties that could provide plenty of value and variety during your travels.

Let’s look at how Chase delivers the lounge access benefit that comes with the Chase Sapphire Reserve card.

Sapphire Terrace (1)

Additionally, the Chase Sapphire Reserve card allows cardholders and 2 guests access to Chase Sapphire Terrace locations. Currently, there’s only 1 location at Austin–Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) in Texas.

Sapphire Terrace locations do not accept Priority Pass.

Priority Pass Lounge Alternatives (70+)

One advantage of having the Priority Pass membership associated with the Chase Sapphire Reserve card is complimentary access to Priority Pass alternative lounge properties. These properties include participating airport restaurants, Minute Suites, Be Relax spas, and Gameway video game lounges.

If your travels include airports that have participating venues, you’re sure to find additional value. Here’s how the alternative lounge Priority Pass benefit works:

Airport Restaurants

Whether it’s Bobby Van’s Steakhouse at JFK or the Lark Creek Grill at SFO, no need to depend on an airport lounge for your meal and cocktail. Priority Pass participating restaurants are located throughout the U.S. and internationally. The numbers vary as restaurants open, close, or leave the network, but there are approximately 25 participating airport restaurants in the U.S. and another 40+ internationally.

Hot Tip: If you choose to do so, you can visit more than 1 Priority Pass participating restaurant in the same airport on the same day. If your companion also has Priority Pass, you could use the pass for another free Minute Suite hour during the same visit as your free hour. 

Minute Suites

If you need to grab a nap, get some work done, or take a shower, a Minute Suite could be a welcome space during your travels. Your Chase Sapphire Reserve card’s Priority Pass will give you 1 free hour, after which you will be charged $28 per hour. Be Relax Spa

Perhaps a nice massage would help relax you during your travels. With approximately a dozen locations at major airports, Be Relax offers complimentary spa massage treatments varying from 10 to 30 minutes. Most locations allow you to bring 1 guest and there is a limit of 1 treatment per person. Each treatment has a value of $35 to $40.

Treatment availability and guest policies vary by location.

You’ve had your Priority Pass restaurant meal, a nap at Minute Suites, a massage at Be Relax, and now it’s time to play some video games! Pull out that Priority Pass card once again to enjoy up to 2 hours of free play, a cold soda, and some snacks at a Gameway video lounge.

Locations at Charlotte (CLT), Dallas (DFW), Houston (HOU) , and Los Angeles (LAX) airports accept the Priority Pass associated with the Chase Sapphire Reserve card.

With access to nearly 1,500 lounge locations, the Amex Platinum card offers the most lounge access overall. Plus, having exclusive access to Centurion Lounges can offer the best level of lounge experiences.

Chase does offer the unique opportunity to utilize lounge alternative airport properties for complimentary services at Minute Suites, Be Relax, and Gameway.

If the airports you frequent have participating Priority Pass lounge alternatives, you may prefer the lounge access benefits Chase Sapphire Reserve card has to offer. And the Chase Sapphire Reserve card has a lower annual fee.

In the end, the better lounge access card for you will depend on your priorities, how much you travel, the airports you frequent, and if you can realize enough card value overall to help offset the annual fee.

Finally, with more people traveling and not all lounges fully functional, lounges have become crowded. Access can be limited during peak times, wait times to enter may be long, and hours of operation may be limited. Designate an airline for your $200 incidental fee credit

One of the biggest perks of the Amex Platinum Card is a yearly airline incidental fee credit . Every calendar year, you can designate a single airline on which you can get up to $200 in fees reimbursed as a statement credit when you use your card for the purchase**.

While the fee credit doesn't include airfare, it covers incidental expenses like checked bags, flight-change fees, inflight food and drinks, fees for traveling with a pet, lounge day passes (for lounges you don't already have access to), or seat assignments and extra legroom upgrade fees.

You can take advantage of this benefit twice in your first year of card ownership because you get the $200 airline credit once per calendar year instead of on a rolling basis calculated from your cardholder anniversary. For example:

• If you open the card in August, you can earn the full $200 credit before the end of 2024
• The credit resets on January 1, 2025, so you will have another $200 at your disposal

This means you can get up to $400 in value from this credit in your first year.

How to enroll in the $200 airline incidental fee credit 

To designate your airline, call the number on the back of your card or log in to your online account. If you're not sure which airline to choose because you don't have travel plans yet, you can make the selection when you're ready.

Once you've made your choice, you can change it online or by phone each January; after January 31, you're locked in with that airline until the end of the year.

Add your Amex Platinum card to your Uber account

The Amex Platinum Card offers cardholders up to $200 in Uber Cash credits each calendar year. If you don't take Uber rides, don't worry — you can still use the credit toward Uber Eats food delivery and takeout.

The Amex Uber credit is broken into monthly chunks. At the start of each month, you'll get $15 of credits added to your Uber account, with a $20 bonus each December (for a total of $35). Additionally, your account will be upgraded to Uber VIP status, which comes with a few perks, like the option to only request rides from top-rated drivers.

How to activate your Uber credits

To get this credit, just add your new Amex Platinum Card to your Uber account as a payment method. You don't actually have to use the card to pay; as long as you have it stored in your account you'll earn the monthly credits and VIP status.

Enroll in Priority Pass lounge membership

The Amex Platinum Card offers the most comprehensive airport lounge access of any card on the market. It offers access to more than 1,500 lounges in the Priority Pass lounge network alone, as well as to Amex Centurion Lounges and Delta SkyClubs on eligible flights.

But you won't automatically have access to these lounges just by holding the card: You'll have to sign up for Priority Pass membership.

How to activate your Priority Pass membership 

You can do so by logging into your Amex cardholder account online, navigating to your card's account summary from the top right corner, then clicking on "Benefits and Awards." From that page, scroll down to "The American Express Global Lounge Collection" and click the button to begin enrollment.

Alternatively, you can call the number on the back of your card to activate your Priority Pass lounge benefits.

Enroll your Amex Platinum for up to $100 each year in Saks credits

The Amex Platinum Saks credit is split into two chunks: You'll get up to $50 in statement credits between January and June, and another $50 from July through December when you use your card at Saks Fifth Avenue.

While items from Saks can be expensive, there are plenty of lower-priced items available, especially during sales and online shopping season . It's a perfect opportunity to splurge on a luxurious treat you might not otherwise consider.

How to activate your Saks credit

This perk also requires activation. To do so, sign in to your Amex account, click on the "Benefits" tab, and scroll down to find the credit listed. Click "Enroll," and you're all set going forward — you don't need to re-enroll to get the credit each time.

Enroll your card for up to $240 in digital entertainment credit

Another newer perk on the Amex Platinum Card is up to $240 annually in digital entertainment credits, doled out in chunks of up to $20 a month.

Getting complimentary Marriott and Hilton hotel elite status from the Amex Platinum Card is an excellent perk that offers real value, especially if you don't stay at one chain often enough to qualify for the mid-tier Gold level status.

Elite status perks vary between brands and each individual hotel, but typically include things like early check-in and late checkout, a better chance at room upgrades, bonus points on stays, and, in Hilton's case, free breakfast (or a dining credit) — which can add up to hundreds in savings if you're a frequent guest.

Note that you can also get complimentary Hilton status with the best Hilton credit cards , and Marriott elite status with some Marriott credit cards . Depending on which card you have, the elite status you get from one of these cards can be much more valuable than what you'll get from the Amex Platinum Card .

How to activate Marriott Bonvoy Gold and Hilton Honors Gold elite status

Before you enroll, make sure you've signed up for loyalty accounts with each of the hotel brands. Then, either call the number on the back of your Amex Platinum Card, or log in to your Amex online account. Enter your Marriott and Hilton account numbers to request Gold status — it typically takes a day or two for it to show up in your accounts.

Sign Up for CLEAR Plus and use up to $189 in credit

CLEAR® Plus is an expedited airport security program, similar to TSA PreCheck, but it's also available for fast-track access at select stadiums.

The CLEAR Plus credit on the Amex Platinum Card will reimburse you for the $189 annual membership fee. Keep in mind that CLEAR Plus isn't available at as many airports as TSA PreCheck, and you'll still have to remove items like your laptop and shoes before getting screened.

To activate this benefit, simply sign up for CLEAR® Plus at any participating checkpoint and pay for your membership using your Platinum card. The credit will automatically appear on your monthly statement. 

Activate up to $300 in Equinox credits

The Amex Platinum Card has added up to $300 per year in credit towards any gym membership with Equinox, including digital subscriptions for fitness classes through the Equinox+ app.

This could be a valuable benefit if you live in a city with Equinox locations, or if you're a fan of the fitness app. Just keep in mind that Equinox memberships are not cheap. For example, with a 12-month commitment, you'd pay $240 per month for membership at the Rockefeller Center location, and $275 per month if you want access to all US clubs.

Activate this benefit by calling Amex or logging on to your account to enroll in the Equinox benefit, then use your card to pay your monthly membership charge.

Enroll your Amex Platinum for rental car elite benefits

In addition to hotel status, you can get elite status with several car rental agencies. When you get your Amex Platinum Card, log in online and request Avis Preferred, Hertz President's Circle Status, and National Car Rental Emerald Club Executive status — you'll just need to create accounts with those providers first.

Benefits include car upgrades, guaranteed availability, and waived fees for additional drivers.

Use your Amex Platinum to apply for Global Entry or TSA PreCheck

TSA PreCheck is a program that offers expedited security screening at airports. Instead of having to take off their shoes and light jacket, unpack laptops, tablets, and liquids from their hand luggage, and go through slow full-body scanners that create a bottleneck at the security checkpoint, PreCheck members can just put their bags through the x-ray machine, empty their pockets, and walk through a metal detector. It's a faster, easier process, and typically leads to shorter and quicker lines.

You can pay an application fee for PreCheck, or you can pay extra to apply for Global Entry, which, if you're approved, includes PreCheck. Amex DCA Centurion Lounge: What you need to know about the newest lounge at Washington National Airport

While Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) has long been known as a convenient option for commuters, in the last couple of years the airport has upped its comfort level for those who travel both for business and leisure. The new DCA Centurion Lounge by American Express, boasting 12,000 square feet of relaxation, promises to offer respite from the annoyances of travel . 

The lounge opens July 17, and will operate Sunday through Friday from the hours of 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. ET, and Saturday from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. ET. It is located just beyond the South Security Checkpoint airside. I got a sneak peek and here’s what you need to know.

The DCA Centurion Lounge is gorgeous, but might be a victim of its own success

My first thought when I heard that Amex was opening a Centurion Lounge at National Airport was, “Well, that makes sense since it’s mainly an airport for commuters.”

And Amex seems to agree, because the amenities are heavy on coffee machines, light on sleeping loungers or other things people who connect might need. This is a place to stop off on the way out the door. It’s also a place for business, with no dedicated family space at all.

Upon entering the lounge, my immediate reaction was, “This is going to get overcrowded very quickly at peak times.” 12,000 square feet is the size of three McMansions and while the space is optimized well, the seating capacity will bust at the seams in no time.

Now that there are no longer Priority Pass options at DCA, this will be the only non-airline affiliate lounge space, which will add even more pressure to the limited capacity. To be fair to Amex, the lounge is larger than the Capital One Lounge at Washington Dulles (IAD). But Cap One excels at to-go options including its coffee bar, while Centurion Lounges are firmly dine-in only. Even adding to-go coffee cups to the espresso machines would add a relief valve. And IAD has numerous Priority Pass options available to spread the crowds.

I’d sum it up by saying the new lounge is gorgeous, but small, and mainly useful for getting some work done or grabbing a quick bite before you get out on the tarmac. But with its diminutive size, be prepared to take those views along with a wait.

DCA Centurion Lounge dining is a greatest hits collection

For the Centurion Lounge at Washington National, Amex decided to look to the golden oldies and brought three star chefs’ creations from other lounges into the spotlight. 

Members’ favorite Centurion Lounge dishes—including Creamy Polenta, Shabazi Spiced Salmon with Pomegranate BBQ Sauce, and Tamari-Honey Glazed Tofu & Pineapple—feature the skills of chef partners Michelle Bernstein, Ravi Kapur, and Michael Solomonov, whose dishes are featured in Miami, San Francisco, and Philadelphia.

But it wouldn’t be a Washington, D.C. lounge without a tribute to the city’s iconic cherry blossoms somewhere on the menu, so Amex brought in specialty cocktails such as the Haku Hanami, designed by Centurion Lounge Mixologist Jim Meehan.

Centurion Lounge access is available to The Platinum Card® from American Express , The Business Platinum Card® from American Express and Amex Centurion cardholders, as well as those with a Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card or Delta SkyMiles® Reserve Business American Express Card card who are flying with Delta that day. DCA Centurion Lounge limitations

While having a Centurion Lounge at Washington National Airport is a win overall, there are a couple of groups who won’t get to take advantage of the new offerings. 

First of all, the Centurion Lounge, like all premium lounges at DCA, is connected to Terminal 2. Terminal 2 is now organized so that anyone can access any part of it once you are in (which is a fairly recent development), but it’s still not attached to Terminal 1 post-security. This means you will have to exit and re-enter TSA-secure zones if you are flying Southwest, Air Canada, Frontier, or any other flight departing from the old terminal. 

And then you’ll have to consider who you are flying with. If you are in a group or bringing your family along, you won’t be able to enter the lounge with your Amex Platinum for free unless you spend $75,000 per year on the card. Even if you have met that spending threshold, you can’t bring in more than two guests without paying the guest fee ($50 per adult and $30 per child ages 2 to 17). This effectively shuts the lounge doors to a family of four unless you have additional authorized user accounts or are willing to pony up. 

The takeaway

Amex’s Centurion Lounge at Washington National is a welcome addition to the evolving airport. With the recent addition of a state-of-the-art American Airlines Admirals Club lounge and a Capital One lounge on the horizon, DCA’s lounge scene is rivaling its breathtaking views. Let’s just hope you don’t have to see them from the line outside.

Priority Pass is a network of over 1,500 lounges, Minute Suites, Be Relax Spas and even some restaurants . You can find them at over 600 airports in more than 150 countries.

Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant American Express Card

Do you love airport lounges? Airlines are stepping it up for you. | Cruising Altitude

• Airport lounges have become increasingly important to many travelers in the past decade or two.
• Airlines have to work harder both to stand out and meet travelers' ever-evolving expectations.
• Many airline-branded credit cards include access to the affiliated carrier’s lower-tier lounges.

Delta Air Lines opened the newest lounge in its network last month, the Delta One Lounge at JFK in New York. It’s a departure from the airline’s existing Sky Clubs. It caters only to premium cabin passengers and has much stricter access requirements than the airline’s other lounges – sorry, American Express Platinum cardholders. 

While I don’t always think a lounge visit is the best use of a traveler’s time , I’ll also freely admit that if I wind up getting to the airport early and have lounge access at my disposal, I’ll usually go anyway.

Experts and executives across the airline industry say lounge offerings have become increasingly important to many travelers in the past decade or two, and airlines have to work harder both to stand out and meet travelers' ever-evolving expectations.

“We are focusing on the hospitality, on the genuine care of our people, on the service they provide, and the culture we have created in the lounge,” Claude Roussel, Delta’s vice president of Sky Clubs and lounge experience told me. “The culture of service, the culture of ensuring every guest is taken care of.” 

In some ways, the evolution of airline lounges mirrors the evolution of airplane cabins , with premium offerings becoming more ostentatious in some ways but also more accessible to the average traveler in others. Achievable luxury and tiered, differentiated products for different price points seem to be the driving philosophy at most major carriers both in the air and on the ground these days.

A brief history of airport lounges

According to Henry Harteveldt, president of Atmosphere Research, a travel industry analytics firm, American Airlines opened the first airport lounge in the U.S. in the late 1930s at LaGuardia Airport in New York. But there was little innovation or access in the first decades, even as other airlines followed American’s model.

“These lounges were pleasant but almost utilitarian by today's standards,” he said. “Until 1972, airport lounges were restricted to travelers who were flying in the premium cabin, or, in the U.S., they were invitation-only.” 

Harteveldt said some basic food and beverage offerings were standard in most lounges, and in the early days of widespread internet use, they were often among the first places in airports to get Wi-Fi.

For nearly 60 years, however, lounges have been more like midmarket hotel lobbies than the luxurious escapes they have become more recently.

“Let’s fast-forward to the 1990s, and that’s when you really start to see airlines invest in the lounge experience. … Virgin (Atlantic Airways) basically said: Why should a lounge be stuffy and boring?” Harteveldt said. “Virgin had a craft cocktail program, they had a full buffet, they had spas. At the London Heathrow Clubhouse, I think there was initially a putting green and games.” 

And with that, the explosion of lounge attractions began. Delta led the charge in revitalizing U.S. airport lounges, according to Harteveldt. 

Roussel from Delta said it started with a simple directive from his boss about 10 years ago.

“Make Sky Club a reason to fly Delta,” he said he was told shortly after he joined the company. So Roussel and his team went on a mission to make lounges a more valued part of travelers’ experiences by improving the furnishings, food and beverage offerings and more.

“In my opinion, the Delta Sky Clubs played an enormous role in helping evolve its position from that of an airline to more of a lifestyle brand ,” Harteveldt said.

Why airlines care about their lounges

Many travelers just really, really want to go to the lounge before, between, or after their flights, and it’s a competitive disadvantage not to give them what they want.

According to data from Atmosphere Research Group’s 2024 first-quarter U.S. travel online study, 43% of business travelers and 37% of leisure travelers said lounge access was important to them, and about half of all travelers said they choose itineraries based on their ability to access an airline’s lounge.

“It’s a competitive necessity,” Harteveldt said. “When your competitors have something and you don’t, and it’s something that’s seen as meaningful to the traveler, you’re seen as deficient.” 

As more people are able to access lounges, either through credit card partnerships or expanded premium cabins, airlines have had to stratify their offerings. 

United introduced Polaris Lounges in 2016 for premium cabin passengers only, in addition to its Clubs, and American rolled out Flagship Lounges in 2017 in addition to its Admirals Clubs. 

Delta was a little late to the game with the Delta One Lounge, which caters to only premium cabin passengers.

“When you’re in a Sky Club in one of our hubs, you basically, we mix customers who pay $10,000 for tickets with someone who pays $500 or $600 for a ticket,” Roussel said. 

So a dedicated premium lounge functions much like the curtain between business class and premium economy on a long-haul flight. The big spenders don’t always want to deal with crowds and prefer a more exclusive space.

Airlines have also been under pressure recently as their lounges have become more crowded, and some have had long lines to get in at peak travel times. Roussel said the new Delta One Lounge has already helped alleviate some of those problems at JFK since it opened.

British Airways is also overhauling its global lounge network to address its passengers' changing demands and demographics.

“People’s travel has changed, we get to the airport earlier post-pandemic, more people flying for leisure, people want more, that means we need to adapt what we offer to meet our customers’ needs,” Calum Laming, British Airways’ chief customer officer, told me at an event the airline hosted in New York this spring to preview updates to various parts of its business. 

Laming said the airline wants to blend its British identity with local flavor in the destinations it serves to help give premium customers what they want wherever they go.

Plus, he said, “Britain is about bars. Expect a great bar” at every location as the new clubs open and old ones are revamped.

How you can get lounge access

For those who travel only once or twice a year, a lounge membership may not be worth it. But if your trip includes a long layover, day passes could be worth considering. More frequent airport visitors need to decide for themselves if the perks of the lounges available to them are worth the cost. 

Airlines increasingly reserve their most exclusive lounges, like the new Delta One Lounge, only for customers traveling in long-haul premium cabins or their most elite, invitation-only frequent flyers. (A throwback to a bygone era of lounge access, perhaps?) 

But that doesn’t mean all lounges are off-limits to the budget-conscious traveler.
