Things to Do in Haikou, Haikou Attractions

Things to Do in Haikou, Haikou Attractions 2024

Haikou, the capital of Hainan Province, has been selected as one of the most charming cities in China . Although it is not as famous as Sanya, it is much quieter than Sanya and the romance of the island is no less. Sailboats looming between the sky and the sea along wide Haikou beaches. Ancient volcanoes are covered with coral-like lava flows, solidifying the past time in silence and comfort. Originated in the Han Dynasty (around 110 BC) and opened as a port in the late Song and the early Yuan dynasties (around 1071 AD), Haikou is also the city with the most historical and cultural charm on Hainan Island .

Strolling along the old street of Haikou at dusk, listening to the tinkling of the tricycle bell from street corners, finding a thriving Laoba Teahouse to take a break, tasting authentic Haikou food and chatting with hospitable local residences, you will find that this is the “Coconut City” you've been dreaming about. This is the quiet and comfortable, retro and nostalgic Haikou.

Haiku Travel Guide: Things to do in Haiku, China

Haikou City Guide: A Brief History Of Haikou, China

Haikou, located on Hainan Island in southern China, has a rich history that spans thousands of years. As you explore the city, you’ll discover its intriguing historical past and the influences that have shaped its cultural heritage.

Ancient records indicate that Haikou was inhabited as early as the Qin Dynasty (221-206 BCE). During the Tang Dynasty (618-907 CE), it served as a trading port and was known as Hainan Port. The city flourished as a hub for maritime trade, attracting merchants from various parts of China , Southeast Asia, and beyond.

In the 14th century, during the Yuan Dynasty, the city was officially established as Hainan County. However, it wasn’t until the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644 CE) that the city started to be known as Haikou, which translates to “Mouth of the Sea” in Chinese. This name was inspired by the city’s location at the mouth of the Nandu River, where it flows into the South China Sea.

Throughout its history, Haikou faced numerous challenges, including invasions by pirates and conflicts between different ethnic groups. The city’s strategic coastal location made it a target for maritime raids, which led to the construction of fortifications and defensive structures.

In the 19th century, Haikou became an important trading port during the Qing Dynasty. It was designated as one of the “Treaty Ports” following the Opium Wars, opening up to foreign trade and cultural exchanges. This period brought significant changes to the city’s urban landscape, with the construction of Western-style buildings and the establishment of foreign concessions.

During the early 20th century, Haikou played a crucial role in the development of Hainan Province. It became the provincial capital in 1988 when Hainan Island was designated as a separate province. Since then, Haikou has undergone rapid urbanization and has become a major economic and cultural center.

Today, Haikou stands as a modern city that still retains glimpses of its historical past. The Qilou Old Street, with its well-preserved arcade buildings, reflects the architectural styles of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, offering a window into the city’s colonial past. The historical landmarks, such as the Haikou Clock Tower and the Temple of the Five Lords, provide insights into the city’s cultural and religious traditions.

As you explore Haikou, take the opportunity to delve into its fascinating history. Visit the Hainan Provincial Museum to learn more about the region’s historical artifacts and cultural heritage. Take a stroll through the city’s streets, where you can witness the fusion of old and new, and imagine the bustling scenes of the past.

Haikou’s history contributes to its vibrant cultural tapestry, making it a destination that offers not only beautiful beaches and natural wonders but also a deeper appreciation for the legacy of this coastal city.

Haikou Top Attractions and Best Places to Visit in China

Hainan is known for its beaches and tropical climate , but few linger long in Haikou, as it is a capital city rather than a beach destination.

Before you head off to Sanya , though, take a day or two to visit this city’s museums, parks, and other attractions.

Come check out our Haikou travel guide as we cover the best things to do in Haikou, China.

Begin your time in Haikou by learning about the history of China’s tropical isle by exploring the halls of the Hainan Museum . With over 20,000 artifacts in its collection, you’ll learn about this island’s history as a place of exile for failed government officials and political prisoners.

Its exhibits also shed light on the culture of the native inhabitants of Hainan, with particular attention paid to its indigenous residents. Special galleries which highlight the region’s literature, art, and economic development have also been held here over the years, so keep an eye out for these as you explore.

While some exhibits are in Chinese only, audio guides are available for rent that will tell the story of this place in English, Russian, Japanese, and other tongues.

Dive into the past of the city of Haikou by spending a few hours walking down Qilou Old Street . While this thoroughfare has existed for over 2,000 years, the architecture you’ll see along its length dates back to the mid-19th century, when this place was done up in the Arcade style commonly seen in many Chinese enclaves in Southeast Asia .

As you make your way under the overhangs built to protect locals from torrential downpours and the punishing tropical sun, make note of the European, Indian, and Arabic influence in the buildings you see . As an important trading port in those days, it played host to many foreigners from those nations, you helped inform many of the structures you’ll see as you walk through here.

If you’re more into natural sights and attractions, book a day trip to Huoshankou National Geopark . Centred around a dormant volcano, this geological reserve is recognized by UNESCO for the ease of access it allows visitors to a former volcanic site.

A delightful hike that will take you through tropical rainforest, up the slopes of a formerly active volcano, and down into its crater, it will put you in touch with some of the best natural environments that the Haikou area has to offer.

As a Special Economic Zone in China , the island has seen the development of a number of schemes, including the building of infrastructure meant to prop up the film industry. During your trip here, check out Movie Town Haikou , a combo tourist attraction and open-air filming location.

Over 1,400 acres, you’ll find 96 buildings situated along a variety of themed streets which allow producers to shoot films based in the Republican era of China, along a Beijing street in the 1950s/60s, or in a prototypical European town square.

There are also four sound stages where indoor scenes can be done with a myriad of lighting, sound, and other physical effects, so be sure to check those out while touring the grounds of this studio.

Other Cultural Attractions: Trip to Haikou, China

The island of Hainan and the Haikou area sit in a tropical climate biome; as such, there are plenty of plant and animal species which can live in this corner of China . Check out a good cross-section of these on a visit to Hainan Tropical Wildlife Park and Botanical Garden .

Here, you’ll find the Liger, a rare cross-breed of wild feline (lion + tiger = liger), as well as other tropical animals like the Asian Elephant, hippos, and over 200 species of birds. The garden portion of this attraction contains many delicate species of orchid, lush palm trees, and many examples of flora species that are endemic to the island of Hainan.

Most of the attractive beaches on Hainan can be found around the Sanya area, but if you want to enjoy some time in the sun in a low-key place, spend a sunny afternoon on the sands of Jiari Beach . Featuring golden sands that aren’t as crowded as Sanya’s beaches (even so, make sure you visit during the week rather than on weekends). A popular gathering place for locals, you’ll find them barbequing food and enjoying the company of family and friends.

Take a break from sightseeing in Haikou by spending time in Wanlv Park . Situated along the coast near the centre of Haikou, this green space is a great place to watch fireworks, fly kites, ride a bike , or go for a jog.

Finally, satisfy any cravings you have while walking around Haikou by stopping for a meal along Qilou Snack Street . Note that hard currency isn’t accepted at the booths which serve everything from seafood to steamed pork buns – instead, you need to load money onto a prepaid card at the tourist information office, or download Wechat and put money on it.

Once you jump this hurdle, though, an evening here will be cheap and enjoyable, as there are many dishes to choose from.

Torrei hart says touring with katt williams is no shade to kevin hart, torrei hart kevin & katt's beef is their drama ... it's my time to shine 🤩, exclusive 186 1/24/2024 10:28 am pt.

Torrei Hart is advising everyone upset she's touring with Katt Williams -- after he took big swipes at her ex-husband Kevin Hart -- to get over their emotions, she's booked and ready to hit the road!!!

TMZ Hip Hop recently caught up with Torrei in Burbank, where she explained she and Katt have a longstanding friendship dating back 20 years ... and he simply picked her to join on his "Dark Matter" Tour because she's "funny as f***!!!"

Waiting for your permission to load the Instagram Media.

Katt set off the year with his roasting of Kevin -- and several other Black comics on Shannon Sharpe 's "Club Shay Shay" podcast -- but Torrei says her history with Katt is set in stone, and she isn't involved in their "beef."

Self-assurance aside, Torrei says she feels like it's her time to step into her own spotlight outside Kevin's shadow ... she maintains she's a 15-year comedy vet, climbing through the ranks of the chitlin' circuit and deserves this moment!!!

She intentionally named her own tour "No Hart Feelings," so haters can stay mad!!!

Kevin's not amongst the angry mob -- he's giving his ex a ringing endorsement !!!

Wild Saturday sets up historic finish at The American Express

Change Text Size

Nope. Not this week. That’s life at The American Express, which took a turn for the historic with Thomas’ round and the emergence of Nick Dunlap, the sure-swinging U.S Amateur champ who shot 11-under 60 to tie the lowest round ever by an amateur in a PGA TOUR event. He is three shots ahead of Sam Burns and four clear of Thomas, his final-round playing partners.

“Didn’t think I was going to have to deal with a freaking college kid shooting 60 today,” Thomas said.

Nobody did. But Saturday was the day The American Express went crazy. A day of lipped-out holes-in-one, supremely low scores and the blossoming of a superstar who hasn’t yet turned pro. It was the warmup act for a final round that has all the ingredients of a storybook finish.

The main character is Dunlap. The 20-year-old University of Alabama sophomore could become the first amateur to win a PGA TOUR event since Phil Mickelson at the 1991 Northern Telecom Open. He would also be the second-youngest TOUR winner in the last 90 years. He is the first amateur to hold a 54-hole lead/co-lead in a TOUR event since Paul Dunne at the 2015 Open Championship.

“It's going to be hard," Dunlap said of the task ahead on Sunday. "It's going to be something that I haven't experienced yet, obviously, on the PGA TOUR. We've got a good game plan for that golf course, and just kind of go out there and do us and stay in the present.”

Nick Dunlap’s Round 3 highlights from The American Express

There have been close calls in recent years. Michael Thorbjornsen contended at the 2022 Travelers Championship, ultimately finishing solo fourth. Sam Bennett was in the hunt through three rounds at the Masters last spring. But Dunlap is different. Neither predecessor was leading, nor did they have the amateur pedigree of Dunlap.

He shot 59 as a 12-year-old at Highland Golf Club in Birmingham, Alabama, as part of a decorated junior career. He’s currently the No. 3 ranked amateur in the world, behind only Gordon Sargent and Christo Lamprecht. Dunlap beat Sargent on his way to a dominating victory at the U.S. Amateur last summer at Cherry Hills Country Club. With the win, he joined Tiger Woods as the only golfers to win both the U.S. Amateur and U.S. Junior Amateur.

None of the previous close calls included a round of 60 either, which matched Patrick Cantlay’s 60 at the 2011 Travelers Championship for the lowest by an amateur. Dunlap followed a par on the 10th hole of La Quinta Country Club, his first hole of the day, with four consecutive birdies. He added another on No. 17 to make the turn in 6-under 30. He added four more birdies and an eagle on his back nine to shoot 60.

His closest pursuers have gone low this week, too. Thomas, a fellow Crimson Tide product, birdied six straight holes on the back nine to post 61 on Saturday and grab a spot in the final group. He nearly matched Dunlap’s 60, if not for a lip-out on a possible hole-in-one on the par-3 13th.

Justin Thomas nearly makes an ace at The American Express

“As soon as it got on the ground and it was going to the hole, in my head, I'm like, this is going to go in,” he said. “That is so cruel.”

Thomas couldn’t be too mad, though. Sunday will be his best chance to win in over a year and would mark a triumphant start to what he hopes is a rebound season. Thomas did not qualify for the FedExCup Playoffs for the first time last year and is not in any of the 2024 Signature Events. His well-documented struggles reached a boiling point in the majors. He shot 78 in the second round of the Masters to miss the cut, then posted rounds over 80 at both the U.S. Open and The Open Championship. His play has turned recently, with three top fives in his last three stroke-play events. Sunday could put a cap on the comeback.

Then there’s Sam Burns, an LSU graduate who is an honorary Alabama fan this week based on his most recent haircut. Burns led through 36 holes after firing a 61 of his own on Friday. He followed it Saturday with a 65 and is 24-under overall. A win at The American Express this week would make it four straight seasons with at least one PGA TOUR victory for Burns. He set career-bests in earnings ($7.14 million) and FedExCup finish (ninth) last year. He has three top-20s in four previous starts at The American Express.

For Burns and Thomas, they’ll be chasing a younger version of themselves. Both arrived to the PGA TOUR as highly touted prospects. Now, they’ll do their best to delay the ascension of another.

“He's going to feel things he hasn't felt tomorrow,” Thomas said of Dunlap.

Hopefully, the golf world will see things it hasn’t seen before. Saturday was the day The American Express went crazy. Let’s see what Sunday has in store.

Two concertgoers from New York City are suing Madonna , as well as Live Nation and the Barclays Center, after the pop star started a show two hours late, leaving them tired for work the next day.

Michael Fellows and Jonath Hadden filed a class action lawsuit on Wednesday.

The complaint, seeking unspecified damages, outlined that the two men booked to see Madonna perform at her "Celebration Tour" at Brooklyn's Barclays Center.

Both plaintiffs went to the December 13 concert, where Madonna appeared onstage more than two hours late, it said.

The concert, which was delayed from its original date in July after the pop star was hospitalized with a bacterial infection, had an advertised start time of 8.30 p.m.

"But Madonna did not take the stage until after 10:30 p.m. on all three nights, with most concert attendees leaving the Barclays Center after 1:00 a.m.," the complaint said.

It accused Madonna of demonstrating a "flippant difficulty in ensuring a timely or complete performance" and of breaching their contracts.

The complaint also described the delay to the show's start as "a wanton exercise in false advertising, negligent misrepresentation, and unfair and deceptive trade practices."

According to the complaint, the lack of forewarning left them waiting at the venue for hours, and they were then presented with challenges getting home due to the late finish time.

There were "limited public transportation, limited ride-sharing, and/or increased public and private transportation costs at that late hour," it said.

It also said ticketholders had to "get up early to go to work and/or take care of their family responsibilities for the next day."

As a result, Fellows and Hadden contend they were "damaged as a direct and proximate result" of the late start time and are seeking a trial by jury.

Madonna's management, Live Nation, and the Barclays Center did not immediately respond to Business Insider's requests for comment, which were sent outside operating hours.
