beautiful musical tour review

At one point in “Beautiful: The Carole King Musical,” the 16-year-old version of Carole King heads with a friend to 1650 Broadway in New York, hoping to sell one of her numbers. “It’s like a factory,” she tells her worried Brooklyn mother, “only they make songs.”

At that moment in Jessica Fisch’s superbly directed new production at the Marriott Theatre, the most artful show in years at this venerable musical house, the round stage suddenly fills with young people all in the everyday thrall of making and selling music. It’s a richly detailed piece of staging, no doubt forged with choreographer Christopher Windom, and topping even Fisch’s similarly witty treatment of the song “Pleasant Valley Sunday.” Both of these emotionally potent numbers are examples of how this fresh Marriott take improves upon director Marc Bruni’s original Broadway staging. Bruni did superb work, so that’s no faint praise.

Fisch’s production has certain extraordinary assets.

No. 1 is Kaitlyn Davis (as King), a vulnerable, unpretentious actress who rightly focuses on the fundamental King paradox: she always wanted a stable family, which proved elusive, far more than fame and acclaim, which did not. Unless I was occasionally deceived, Davis played the entire piano part live, which was not true on Broadway and as rare in jukebox musicals as a sympathetic record company executive.

No. 2 is Andrew Mueller diving deep into the role of King’s husband, Gerry Goffin. Mueller is the brother of this show’s original Broadway star, Jessie Mueller, and also the brother of Abby Mueller who took over the role on Broadway after Jessie. The Evanston Muellers, you might say, know their “Beautiful” and I suspect that all Andrew had to do to know was pick up the phone to know that he’s got a friend with tips. He’s quite spectacular in the part, turning what can be a cardboard villain into a deep and moving dive inside a troubled and dysfunctional soul, even suggesting that this songwriting combination is what helped produce so much excellence.

Fisch also has cast real actors, of the Chicago style, in the character roles: the likes of Lawrence Grimm as the gruff but paternalistic song broker of 1650 Broadway and Janet Ulrich Brooks as Carole’s mom. Fisch clearly understood that not everybody needs to sing, especially when you have the luminous Erica Stephan playing (sadly now the late) Cynthia Weil and the melodically caustic Justin Albinder as Barry Mann.

Watching “Beautiful” for the fourth time (the first three were the original 2014 staging), I was reminded how well bookwriter Douglas McGrath hit all the affectionate notes you have to hit for the core audience of King fans, but did so with the kind of wit and verve that none of the biographical jukes that have followed quite managed. Part of the secret sauce here is the size of the ensemble, and the show’s emphasis on all the Black artists who recorded the justly famed songs of King and Goffin and Weil and Mann. You get a cornucopia of musical delights from the 1960 and 1970s and lots of opportunities for fun cameos, all grabbed here by the likes of Melanie Brezill.

Finally, Marriott has dared to turn up the volume of its oft-repressed band. The show rocks when it needs to rock on “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman” and the scenic designer Andrew Boyce has created a classy and elegant set with a moving turnable and extensive video backdrops: you can believe you’re in Carnegie Hall when that moment comes, but this production is just as comfortable in the small Brooklyn home whence one of America’s greatest songwriters came.

Over the last couple of years, it often has felt like Marriott is stuck in another decade, understandably so, perhaps, given its core senior audience. But the reality is that today’s theatergoing grays grew up not with “Try to Remember a Kind of September” but with “It Might As Well Rain Until September.” And “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow?” A good question at any age.

Marriott is figuring out what Broadway also has realized. And with a director at the helm who can cast great singers but focuses on the acting, fusing Chicago’s musical theater and straight-play talent pool, it can do all kinds of exciting things. After a rough year or two, this new season in Lincolnshire already has offered a top-drawer “Gypsy,” both powerful and moving, and now a “Beautiful” that’s entirely worth the drive (it’s Not So Far Away) if you are a fan of this show or this artist.

Once King’s fans find this production and understand how much more it has brought to the table, it’ll be one of Marriott’s biggest hits.

Things To Do

Theater + arts, theater + arts | review: ‘beautiful: the carole king musical’ hits most of the right notes in la mirada.

beautiful musical tour review

If any entertainer lived an ideal early life for a two-act jukebox musical, it is Carole King.

As an early ’60s bubble-gum pop songwriter beginning in her teens, she wrote hit tunes and got romantically involved with her professional partner, resulting in a messy marriage that crumbled.

In the early ’70s she re-emerged as a solo singer-songwriter, an independent voice and working mom who at 29 created the masterful album “Tapestry,” which sold more than 25 million copies.

These crosscurrents fuel “Beautiful: The Carole King Musical.” Newly opened at the La Mirada Theatre, an energetic and enjoyable production directed by David Ruttura reveals thin soap opera-ish storytelling buoyed by engaging ensemble performances of an extremely catchy score.

At 16, King is a Brooklyn girl, youthfully insecure in self-image, but supremely confident in the songs she has been writing on her mom’s piano. King darts to Manhattan to sell a tune and her talents are instantly confirmed: a sale!

King eagerly plunges into an office-environment beehive of high-stress/high-reward musical ambition and activity. Young songwriters and musicians swarm to crank out buzzy pop hits and compete to earn favor from a svengali music publisher named Don Kirshner who demands a non-stop supply of three-minute chartbusters.

In this environment, composer King and lyricist Gerry Goffin meet, marry and prove a fertile pair, having two daughters and a torrent of hit titles topped by “One Fine Day,” “The Locomotion” and “Will You Love Me Tomorrow?”

They also share a very friendly rivalry with another songwriting couple, Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann, who have the office next door and a successful catalogue of their own, notably “On Broadway” and “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling,” which are happily included in this score.

“Beautiful” sounds great from the get-go. The first act alone features 17 songs — sometime snippets, sometimes whole numbers — performed in a couple ways.

The principals sing a few numbers as they are being created, with just piano accompaniment. But the bulk of the songs are fleshed out with a 10-piece band and the strong supporting cast, which doubles down in multiple roles, amping things up in choreographed numbers as the pop acts that first recorded these hits.

Meanwhile, the lives of the two couples — the Weil and Mann characters prove entertainingly neurotic as individuals and as a twosome — progress. The scenes get a bit longer and the story wobbles about as everyone is older, having encountered personal challenges that writing three-minute hit tunes just won’t solve.

As the ’60s wane, King has struggled and grown through emotional turmoil and her music becomes more introspective, with greater depth. This leads her to finding confidence in performing her own songs, with payoffs for the show including “It’s Too Late,” “You’ve Got a Friend” as well as the title track.

As King and Goffin, actors Sara Sheperd and Miles Jacoby make for a fine day, but not necessarily a beautiful pairing.

Sheperd is a strong singer, but her vocals lack the likely impossible to emulate sandpapery qualities of King herself, whose renderings of the songs remain indelible. While conveying the emotional struggles of Goffin, Jacoby struggles. To be fair to the actor, Douglas McGrath’s original book never quite clarifies Goffin’s persona.

As Weil and Mann, Sara King and Trevor James fare better. King inhabits the clear-headed, wisecracking Weil with vulnerability and empathy so that when her hardheaded approaches give way to emotional entanglement in the heat of the moment, it feels natural. James winningly clamors on to Mann’s humorous hypochondria like a performance life raft.

Kudos, also, to veteran stage actress Valerie Perri as the supportive, if sanctioning, Jewish mother. Perri has the cadences of a tough-love-ma character down, as well as the outer borough accent needed to fist her timely punch lines.

Costume designer Alejo Vietti offers colorful period outfits that capture the amusing range in the ’60s, from early-on pastel, show-biz outfits to mellower headbands, bell bottoms and platform heels as the decade progresses.

Derek McLane’s scenic design creates a nice, overall environment, particularly at the music publishing offices. Ethan Steimel’s well-designed creative lighting provides visual support for the musical numbers.

Not everything about “Beautiful” is. But the overall endeavor in La Mirada’s typically competent-and-then-some hands makes for an enjoyable evening.

Beautiful: The Carole King Musical Reviews

Chicago Tribune - Highly Recommended

Let's Play Theatrical Reviews - Highly Recommended

"...Beautiful is a musical that expresses the power of music to communicate emotions, trials, tribulations, and, above all, love. With perfect lyrics, harmony, instrumental sounds, and vocals, music can evoke both good and bad memories."

Around The Town Chicago - Highly Recommended

"...Well, tonight, I was witness to an extraordinary job of direction (Jessica Fisch) and choreography (Christopher Windom) on what one might call a super-set (Andrew Boyce). In fact, one might say that the set changes were as well choreographed as any dance number in any musical. There are no walls. The set pieces must go up the aisles ( and down) to reach the stage and or upper floor. These were all done quickly and the show never missed a beat."

Chicago Theatre Review - Highly Recommended

"...In the first of three Chicagoland productions this season, the Marriott Theatre's ebullient biopic musical, which is pure theatrical joy, draws the audience into its catchy music and captivating story. The production grabs you and never lets go until after the final bows. Relating the artist's formative years, "Beautiful" celebrates the brilliant career of singer/songwriting legend, Carole King. Douglas McGrath's libretto depicts the many ups and downs experienced by this modest, gifted artist. From a precocious 16-year-old, who skipped two grades in high school to study music education at local Queens College, to her first published and recorded hit song, "It Might as Well Rain Until September," we watch a talented young lady grow from a sharp kid into a wise and gifted woman."

Buzznews.net - Highly Recommended

"...First off, the production has a wonderful Carole King. Kaitlyn Davis certainly knows the role, having played King in productions both nationally and regionally. But it’s not just that Davis plays Carole King. She really becomes Carole King. I’m a big fan of Ms. King, and Davis’ portrayal—throughout King’s career—is spot-on. Like King, Davis is an accomplished pianist, accompanying herself throughout the show—while also nailing the timbre and tone of King’s voice; seriously, this isn’t a theater person approximating a songwriter’s voice, it’s someone with a warm singer/songwriter’s voice who’s also got Broadway chops."

Chicagoland Musical Theatre - Highly Recommended

"...Marriott Theatre’s regional holiday production of Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, the first of three stagings planned for Chicagoland over the next year, sets an incredibly high bar, superseding the first name of its title with whatever the superlative of “beautiful” might be."

Chicago Theater and Arts - Highly Recommended

"...With terrific dance and song examples, “Beautiful’s” long Act I showed how the music of the King-Gofin partnership was picked up and performed by well-known groups."

Chicago On Stage - Highly Recommended

"...There’s something magical and transcendent about a handful of albums in pop culture. It’s almost certain that “Thriller,” “Rumours,” or “Born in the U.S.A.” come to mind quickly. Still, Carole King’s 1971 “Tapestry,” which sold 25 million copies, holds its place firmly as one of the all-time greats. Douglas McGrath’s musical adaptation of King’s life & career, Beautiful, the Carole King Musical opens a magnificent portal to the past. Directed by Jessica Fisch, the staging of this outstanding production at the Marriott Theatre in Lincolnshire is the feel-good experience we all need in our lives!"

Life and Times - Highly Recommended

"...Leave it to Marriott Theatre to top off the end of a stupendous season with its best show of the year. “Beautiful: The Carole King Musical” is perhaps the best show Marriott has done in the last half of the decade."

Splash Magazine - Highly Recommended

"...This is entertainment worthy of the holiday season with heart, laughter, and pathos. At the finale, the audience was on their feet, rocking and rolling to “I Feel the Earth Move.”"

Things to Do

Theater | ‘beautiful: the carole king musical’ is a real triumph at chanhassen dinner theatres, the production offers more depth and emotion than most jukebox musicals.

Monet Sabel, wearing a blue dress, with arms outstretched in front of a piano.

At first glance, “Beautiful: The Carole King Musical” looks like just another jukebox musical that also happens to be an ideal fit for Chanhassen Dinner Theatres, which just wrapped a months-long run of “Jersey Boys.”

And while it is indeed a perfect show for CDT, which also hosts weekly tribute bands heavy on boomer favorites in its Fireside Theatre, the company’s new production of “Beautiful” is much more thoughtful and emotional than one might expect and offers deeper insights than typically found in the often paper-thin genre.

The story follows one Carol Joan Klein, an awkward yet gifted young woman looking to break into show business, as she grows into Carole King, the successful songwriter and ultimately even more successful performer. Indeed, King is the woman behind 1971’s “Tapestry,” a four-time Grammy winner that stands among the biggest-selling and most-loved albums of all time.

But the King (Monet Sabel) that gave the world “Tapestry” only bookends the show, which keeps its focus on her rise to power alongside her then-husband and co-writer Gerry Goffin (Shad Hanley) and another pair of musical scribes, Barry Mann (Alan Bach) and Cynthia Weil (Shinah Hey).

At the tender age of 16, King convinces her mother Genie (Kim Kivens) to allow her to visit a neighbor of the famed Brill Building and attempt to sell one of her songs to music publisher Donnie Kirshner (Michael Gruber). She succeeds and ends up on the payroll with Goffin providing the lyrics to her melodies, while developing a friendly rivalry with Mann and Weil on the side.

In the days before the Beatles and Bob Dylan revolutionized the music industry by writing their own material, the Brill Building and its peers served as hit-making factories that pumped out catchy, if sometimes vapid, songs aimed squarely at record-buying teens. The songwriting duos wrote for maximum commercial, rather than artistic, impact.

“Beautiful” packs in some 30 songs — from Goffin/King and Mann/Weil as well as their contemporaries – which keeps toes tapping and the momentum spinning forward. (And unlike many other musicals, it doesn’t overstay its welcome with a needlessly padded second act.)

While King and Goffin marry early after her unexpected pregnancy, the cool Weil and neurotic Mann take a much more measured approach to balancing work and romance. For the first time, CDT artistic director Michael Brindisi shares directing duties with his daughter Cat, and the pair’s familial bond clearly informs the storyline as it examines the intersections between love, work and family.

Sabel spent years as the King understudy in the “Beautiful” national tour and truly excels now that she’s finally up front. She finds the true humanity in King and does the perfect job of channeling, but not blindly replicating, her unique talent and spirit. Hey is even better as Weil, lighting up every scene she’s in while suggesting she’s the wisest person on stage (as Weil likely was in real life).

Bach manages to gets some laughs from Mann’s quirks without lapsing into parody and Hanley does a fine job of portraying Goffin’s descent into substance abuse, infidelity and artistic torment. One of the finest moments in the show is the rendition of the Monkees’ “Pleasant Valley Sunday” that exposes the conflicts between King’s desire for the suburban life and Goffin’s fear of songwriting musicians and the more sophisticated work of Mann/Weil, whose “On Broadway” and “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling” tower over Goffin/King’s “One Fine Day” and “The Locomotion.”

A real triumph of a production, CDT’s “Beautiful” will make the earth move under your feet.

She wrote the soundtrack to a generation.  Beautiful  tells the touching and true story of chart-topping musical legend Carole King’s remarkable rise to stardom: beginning as an ordinary girl with extraordinary talent, charting her rock ‘n roll songwriting with husband Gerry Goffin, exploring her relationship to fellow writers and best friends Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann, and forging her path to becoming one of the most successful and enduring solo artists in popular music history.

Chock full of your favorite hits like “One Fine Day,” “Will You Love Me Tomorrow,” “The Locomotion,” “(You Make Me Feel Like a) Natural Woman,” “You’ve Got a Friend,” and so many more, Beautiful  is more than just beautiful music— it’s an inspiring story of a groundbreaking female artist who forged her own path in the male-dominated music industry, finding her own true voice and moving the earth for us all.

Music by Arrangement with Sony/ATV Music Publishing Orchestrations, Vocal and Incidental Music Arrangements Steve Sidwell

BEAUTIFUL is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI). All authorized performance materials are supplied by MTI.  www.mtishows.com

A Letter From Lisa

by Lisa Shriver, Beautiful Director/Choreographer

A blonde woman wearing a black top and tan jacket smiling at the camera

I stood in front of a gym filled with students and parents. The music of “You’ve Got a Friend” swelled and, in my most emotive voice, I sang into the mic, “Close your eyes and think of me.” It was one line, but I felt like a star!

I fell in love with this song—not only because it gave me a chance to step into the spotlight, but because I was entranced by the beautiful melody and lyrics that made even a 12 year old feel like they were her own .

Many years passed before I really knew of Carole King, how her songs shaped rock n’ roll and how she redefined the role of women songwriters in the music industry.

A woman with long curly blonde-brown hair sings into a stick microphone with her eyes closed

Only then did I realize how much of Carole King’s music had scored my own lifetime of moments:

  • being serenaded with “You’ve Lost that Loving Feeling” by a high school crush shortly after the premiere of Top Gun
  • nursing a broken heart with “One Fine Day” on repeat, and
  • showing off on the dance floor of way too many weddings to “The Locomotion.”

It made sense that I knew the songs before I knew the writer.

One of the many unique qualities about Carole King’s stardom is that she never set out to be a star. Her music was the star.

A woman wearing a red dress with long curly blonde hair plays a black grand piano with shiny purple and gold globe lights shining behind her

And when she finally found her own voice as a lyricist and as a recording artist, she created one of the most iconic and beloved albums of all time .

Since its release in 1971, Tapestry has sold over 25 million copies worldwide. With its raw and soulful songs, it solidified Carole King as a voice of her generation .

You hear a few bars of any track from Tapestry and, like seeing an old friend, you are immediately transported back to the moments, the relationships, and the experiences colored by the sound and emotion of these songs—moments like a 6th grade chorus concert and a 12-year-old’s chance to shine.

I hope you’ll warmly recall your own “moments” when you hear the music of Village Theatre’s production of Beautiful: The Carole King Musical .

And I hope your time in the theatre will provide you with a brand-new experience to enjoy and remember.

—Lisa Shriver, Beautiful Director/Choreographer

Last Weeks! Don’t Miss Your Chance to see A Beautiful Noise

Must end June 30th

ABN-Horiz-Logo

JUST LIKE JERSEY BOYS   AND BEAUTIFUL, THE CAROLE KING MUSICAL , A BEAUTIFUL NOISE BRINGS THE HITS YOU LOVE TO LIFE LIKE YOU’VE NEVER SEEN!

The songs you know. the true story you’ve never heard — until now..

Created in collaboration with Neil Diamond himself, A BEAUTIFUL NOISE is the uplifting true story of how a kid from Brooklyn became a chartbusting, show-stopping American rock icon. With 140 million albums sold, a catalogue of classics like “America,” “Forever in Blue Jeans,” and “Sweet Caroline,” an induction into the Songwriters and Rock and Roll Halls of Fame, a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, and sold-out concerts around the world that made him bigger than Elvis, Neil Diamond’s story was made to shine on Broadway, where the biggest stars tell their story.

Like  Jersey Boys  and  The Carole King Musical before it, A BEAUTIFUL NOISE THE NEIL DIAMOND MUSICAL is an inspiring, exhilarating, energy-filled musical memoir, that tells the untold true story of how America’s greatest hitmaker became a star, set to the songs that defined his career.

Music was phenomenal. If you closed your eyes you thought you were at a Neil Diamond concert.
This show is both a concert of Neil Diamond’s greatest hits and a beautiful/heart-reaching love story. It will make you laugh, keep you singing along, and propel you to dance in the aisles.
Fantastic music and really well crafted story. Loved every minute.
So good… so good… so good, that I put Neil immediately in my Spotify rotation on the walk/train ride home.
It’s a MUST SEE in my book! Such a feel-good experience.
This was a true treat . The show about Neil Diamond’s journey was fantastic. The music, the dancing, the acting, the costumes, all great.
The storyline was perfectly scripted, visually exciting, and engaging. I laughed, I cried and sang along.

Myles Frost as Michael Jackson in MJ the Musical.

MJ the Musical review – sterilised moonwalk through the King of Pop’s life

Prince Edward theatre, London The jukebox musical has gravity defying dancing and all the megahits, but it’s hard to ignore the glaringly unpleasant biographical absence

‘I want to keep this about my music,” says Michael Jackson in MJ the Musical. No surprise there. The musical, set during the rehearsal period of the Dangerous world tour in 1992 – coincidentally a year before any sexual allegations were made against him – seems to wipe away almost all the scandal that surrounded Jackson. Of course, it has moonwalks, one megahit after another and years’ worth of biography, but there’s a glaringly unpleasant absence. MJ the Musical is a sterilised swirl through the life of the King of Pop, but in reality, it is no black or white tale.

A musical recounting Jackson’s fame was always going to face an awkward challenge. First, there is the issue that every jukebox musical encounters: how to squeeze well-known songs into a succinct narrative? Then there is the itch to say something fresh about a figure who was a global phenomenon, yet also notoriously enigmatic. But these problems pale in comparison to the issue of Jackson’s own legacy. He was always a man of mystery and a deeply controversial one at that. Since the harrowing 2019 HBO documentary Leaving Neverland , it is hard to ignore the repeated allegations of child sexual abuse.

MJ the Musical.

Yet Lynn Nottage’s script does just that and instead focuses on the mind of a troubled celebrity. Although Jackson feels uneasy about the press, his manager convinces him to let two MTV journalists make a documentary about the tour. They initially plan for it to be solely about Jackson’s musical journey. But as they watch him popping painkillers, requesting almost inconceivable stunts for his show and working his already exhausted crew into the ground, Jackson’s Peter Pan-like strangeness begins to creep to the surface. How can they possibly ignore his personal life in their reports?

Supported by the estate of Michael Jackson – who deny the allegations – the musical makes a case for the superstar’s privacy. There are crashing scenes of him being hounded at press conferences, with shattered video projection by Peter Nigrini. The journalists around him drip with hunger and desperation. Blame for Jackson’s megalomania is pushed on to his team: “Someone will have to tell him no,” they mutter. But never is the superstar solely at fault and his behaviour is largely left unchallenged.

Jackson (Myles Frost – a shapeshifting force) is plagued by visions of his father – there’s the sense that everything he does is to prove himself to him. We hurtle through his rise to fame, his early performances with the Jackson 5 and his later solo album recordings, his voice always a unique, entrancing wonder. His big hits are met with glee from the audience: Thriller contorts the stage into a garish nightmare, while the chorus version of Man in the Mirror has the woman next to me singing at the top of her lungs. As MJ the Musical’s wild ideas burst into a mesmerising reality, the stage becomes a hub of neon and gravity-defying dance moves.

It would be remiss to say Jackson’s songs do not possess an otherworldly magic. And with his fans still in abundance, this West End transfer is sure to sell tickets. But, can we really sit in a theatre and pretend his music can live on without scrutiny? Some might be able to separate Jackson’s art from the artist. But as Frost took his final bow and the audience leaped to their feet, I felt queasy – bad, even.

‘The Beautiful Game’ Review: A Different Kind of World Cup

This heart-string-tugging Netflix movie about a homeless soccer team, featuring Bill Nighy and Micheal Ward, puts the emphasis on play and uplift.

  • Share full article

Micheal Ward, in a jean jacket and blue T-shirt, stands near Bill Nighy, in sunglasses and a black zip-up jacket, on a soccer field.

By Glenn Kenny

It’s moderately surprising that it’s taken filmmakers two decades to concoct a heart-string-tugging underdog story out of the annual coed sport event known as the Homeless World Cup , a weeklong international competition featuring homeless soccer players.

Directed by Thea Sharrock and written by Frank Cottrell Boyce, “The Beautiful Game” is an upbeat, amiable picture that, as its title suggests, puts the sport in front. Which isn’t to say the conditions of the players are ignored. Nathan (Callum Scott Howells), a recovering addict, has a particularly tough time. But the emphasis is on play and uplift. The sunny climes of Rome, where the tournament in the movie is set, help sell it.

The great Bill Nighy plays Mal, the coordinator and coach for England’s team, who one afternoon spots Vinny (Micheal Ward) giving pointers to some younger players. Vinny’s got talent, but Mal seems to recognize more in him. Mal also correctly guesses that Vinny’s more or less living out of his car.

The writer, Boyce, is known for more adventurous fare than this (see “ Tristram Shandy ,” from 2006), but this is a more conventional story. Here, Boyce steers around some clichés, but not others. For example, when Ellie (Jessye Romeo), Vinny’s ever-disappointed former partner, tells him to admit that he’s not going to be able to attend their daughter’s school event, rather than prevaricating, Vinny does just that, proudly proclaiming that he’ll go to Rome despite his initial resistance to Mal’s pitch.

Peppered with funny and inspiring moments, like the charming way the South African team gets a makeup game after being held up at their airport, “The Beautiful Game” is a model of a modern “nice” movie.

The Beautiful Game Rated PG-13 for language, themes. Running time: 2 hours 5 minutes. Watch on Netflix .

With a book by Tony and Academy Award-nominee Douglas McGrath , direction by Marc Bruni and choreography by Josh Prince , Beautiful features a stunning array of beloved songs written by Gerry Goffin / Carole King and Barry Mann / Cynthia Weil . On October 27, 2019, the Broadway production of Beautiful - The Carole King Musical ended its smash-hit, record-breaking run after nearly six years. The production played 60 preview and 2,418 regular performances, surpassing the original production of Annie and the landmark 1998 revival of Cabaret to become the 27th longest-running musical (and the second longest running "bio-musical") in Broadway history. On Broadway, the show was seen by almost 2,200,000 audience members (including, quite famously, King herself) and is the longest-running and highest-grossing show in the history of the Stephen Sondheim Theatre.

The Original Broadway Cast Recording of Beautiful - The Carole King Musical (Ghostlight Records) won the 2015 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album and is available on CD, digitally, and on vinyl.

Sony Pictures has announced that the film adaptation of Beautiful will be produced by Tom Hanks , Gary Goetzman , and Paul Blake .

Long before she was Carole King , chart-topping music legend, she was Carol Klein , Brooklyn girl with passion and chutzpah. She fought her way into the record business as a teenager and, by the time she reached her twenties, had the husband of her dreams and a flourishing career writing hits for the biggest acts in rock 'n' roll. But it wasn't until her personal life began to crack that she finally managed to find her true voice. Beautiful tells the inspiring true story of King's remarkable rise to stardom, from being part of a hit songwriting team with her husband Gerry Goffin , to her relationship with fellow writers and best friends Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann , to becoming one of the most successful solo acts in popular music history. Along the way, she made more than beautiful music, she wrote the soundtrack to a generation. Beautiful features a stunning array of beloved songs written by Gerry Goffin / Carole King and Barry Mann / Cynthia Weil , including "I Feel The Earth Move," "One Fine Day," "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman," "You've Got A Friend" and the title song.

The creative team of Beautiful also includes Derek McLane (Set Design), Alejo Vietti (Costume Design), Peter Kaczorowski (Lighting Design), Brian Ronan (Sound Design), Charles G. LaPointe (Wig and Hair Design), Steve Sidwell (Orchestrations and Music Arrangements), Jason Howland (Music Supervision) and John Miller (Music Coordination).

Beautiful - The Carole King Musical is produced by Paul Blake , Sony/ATV Music Publishing, Jeffrey A. Sine , Richard A. Smith , Mike Bosner , Harriet N. Leve/ Elaine Krauss , Terry Schnuck , Orin Wolf , Patty Baker /Good Productions, Roger Faxon , Larry Magid , Kit Seidel , Lawrence S. Toppall , Fakston Productions /Mary Solomon, William Court Cohen , John Gore , BarLor Productions , Matthew C. Blank , Tim Hogue , Joel Hyatt , Marianne Mills , Michael J. About A Beautiful Noise, The Neil Diamond Musical on Broadway

Video & photos.

Like  Jersey Boys  and  The Carole King Musical  before it,  A Beautiful Noise: The Neil Diamond Musical  is an inspiring, exhilarating, energy-filled musical memoir, that tells the untold true story of how America’s greatest hitmaker became a star, set to the songs that defined his career.
