10 Best ‘Star Trek: Picard’ Episodes From Season 1 and 2, According to Rotten Tomatoes

The third season of Star Trek: Picard began earlier this month, and fans are excited. Their devotion to one of the franchise's most beloved characters, Jean-Luc Picard, portrayed by Patrick Stewart, is easy to understand. Picard has been an icon in the Star Trek universe for over three decades, and his return to the screen is a nostalgic trip down memory lane for long-time fans.

The series' storylines are thought-provoking and often tackle complex ethical dilemmas, providing commentary on contemporary society; the show's visual effects and action sequences are well-executed, and the music by composer Jeff Russo is evocative and memorable. Star Trek: Picard captures the franchise's spirit and is a worthy addition to the Star Trek universe. Fans eager to see where the story goes next can start by checking out the best episodes so far, according to Rotten Tomatoes .

10 Season 2, Episode 3 — "Assimilation"

Rotten Tomatoes score: 88%

When Picard (Stewart), the Queen ( Annie Wersching ), and their friends travel back to Los Angeles in the year 2024, they must find “The Watcher” to find to correct their timeline. While there, against Picard's warnings, Agnes ( Alison Pill ) unites her mind with the Queen and discovers the exact location of the Watcher before she is assimilated.

RELATED: Star Trek: 10 Story Threads That Need A Follow Up

This episode ranked highly with fans predominantly for the return of one of the most iconic and fearsome villains in the Star Trek franchise: the Borg. "Assimilation" also deals with themes of grief and loss since Picard (Stewart) is still mourning the death of his friend and former crew member, Lt. Commander Data ( Brent Spiner ). Additionally, the episode introduces a new character, Soji Asha ( Isa Briones ), who is a synthetic being like Data. Fans enjoy Picard's relationship with Data as it has always been a central facet of his character, and the episode's exploration of Picard's grief and emotional state reverberated deeply with fans.

9 Season 1, Episode 4 — "Absolute Candor"

Rotten Tomatoes score: 89%

Picard (Stewart) instructs his crew to take a detour to the planet Vashti. While on the planet, Picard and Raffi ( Michelle Hurd ) encounter 14 Romulan refugees, including Elnor ( Evan Evagora ), a young Romulan.

Fans rated "Absolute Candor" favorably because of the analysis of Romulan culture that was long overdue. It offered an engaging and refreshing take on the Star Trek universe. "Absolute Candor" delivered a more in-depth familiarity of the Romulan people, who have been recurring antagonists in the Star Trek franchise.

8 Season 1, Episode 6 — "The Impossible Box"

Rotten Tomatoes score: 94%

When Narek ( Harry Treadaway ) realizes that Soji (Briones)has the same nightmare each night, he discovers that he has finally discovered a way to exploit knowledge from her safely. Picard (Stewart) and his crew then track Soji to the Borg cube in Romulan space, to the nearby planet Nepenthe.

RELATED: 9 Best Mirror Universe Episodes in 'Star Trek'

"The Impossible Box" episode is a fan favorite due to its intentional deep dive into the character of Soji. Since fans of the Star Trek franchise have always been curious about the notion of synthetic life and the ethics surrounding its creation, the episode adds to the ongoing exploration of this concept. The episode also features the return of Hugh ( Jonathan Del Arco ), a former Borg drone who first appeared in the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode "I, Borg” and has always been a fan favorite.

7 Season 1, Episode 3 — "The End Is the Beginning"

Rotten Tomatoes score: 95%

After Starfleet fires Raffi (Hurd) and her resentment for Picard (Stewart) grows, she helps him compel a pilot named Rios ( Santiago Cabrera ) to search for Maddox ( John Ales ). When Zhat Vash operatives attack Picard, Jurati (Pill) helps kill all of them but one.

"The End Is the Beginning" sets the stage for the show's overarching story and the season's stakes by showing the threat posed by the Romulan secret society, the Zhat Vash. Fans gave it a high score because of its action sequences and tense moments, not to mention the incredible character development, particularly for Picard, who struggles with the trauma of the destruction of Romulus and his failure to prevent it.

6 Season 1, Episode 7 — “Nepenthe”

Rotten Tomatoes score: 100%

Picard (Stewart) attempts to connect with Soji (Briones) while seeking shelter on Nepenthe with old friends. Meanwhile, Hugh (Del Arco) tells Elnor (Evagora) he will direct an uprising against the Romulans and seize the Artifact.

The episode “Nepenthe” struck a chord with fans primarily because of the reunion of two fan-favorite characters from Star Trek: The Next Generation , Captain Jean-Luc Picard and Commander William Riker ( Jonathan Frakes ). The two characters have a long and storied history, and their interactions in "Nepenthe" are emotional and heartfelt. The emotional depth of the episode and its exploration of complex themes are hallmarks of the Star Trek franchise, and "Nepenthe" delivers on these fronts.

5 Season 1, Episode 1 — “Remembrance”

In the opening episode of the series, 14 years after his retirement from Starfleet, Picard (Stewart) is sought out by a strange woman, Dahj ( Ella Gross ), who needs his help. After meeting her, Picard learns that she could be Data's (Spiner) daughter.

"Remembrance" is an episode that appealed to Star Trek fans due to its use of nostalgia and callbacks to the earlier Star Trek series. The episode’s plot develops a sense of tension and urgency that immerses viewers, makes them invested in the story and reintroduces fans to one of the franchise's most cherished characters, Jean-Luc Picard.

4 Season 2, Episode 1 — "The Star Gazer"

Picard (Stewart) is called upon to protect the galaxy. When he and his crew arrive, a Borg ship appears from the anomaly and transports their Queen onto their ship.

RELATED: 15 Best Holodeck Episodes in 'Star Trek'

"The Star Gazer" delivers a solid start to the second season of Star Trek: Picard , and it presents a heartwarming combination of nostalgia, new challenges, and deeper themes that keep fans engaged and excited. It also explores more profound themes, such as sacrifice, regret, and the consequences of one's actions. The episode also ranks high because it features poignant moments where Picard reminisces on the choices he has made in his life and the people he has lost along the way.

3 Season 2, Episode 2 — "Penance"

When Picard (Stewart) learns from his longtime nemesis Q ( John de Lancie ) that he and his friends have been transported to an alternate timeline in the year 2400, the group must figure out how to get home. As the group is preparing to leave, security officers beam aboard the ship, shoot Elnor (Evagora), and prepare to execute them.

“Penance” receives a perfect score for its character-driven style that digs into the past of Picard and investigates his feelings of regret and remorse. The episode also features several action-packed sequences, including a space battle and a chase through the streets of Paris.

2 Season 2, Episode 5 — "Fly Me to the Moon"

In exchange for medicine that can save his daughter Kore's ( Isa Briones ) life, Q (de Lancie) asks for Soong's (Brent Spiner) help to deal with Renée ( Penelope Mitchell ). Meanwhile, Picard (Stewart) understands that Renée is destined to find a sentient organism on Jupiter's moon and realizes that it is essential that she does not.

"Fly Me to the Moon" is an episode that offers a change of pace from the typical action and adventure frequently found in the Star Trek franchise. Instead, it explores ideas of friendship, love, and loss, which builds an emotional depth that resonates with viewers and leads to the perfect score. Furthermore, the episode's humor and lighthearted moments, such as the banter between Picard and Elnor, add to its overall appeal. The episode strikes a balance between wit and emotion, which creates an emotional and enjoyable viewing experience.

1 Season 2, Episode 6 — "Two of One"

Picard (Stewart) and the crew, with the help of Tallinn ( Orla Brady ), gain entrance to a gala. When Soong (Spiner) warns security that Picard (Spiner) is dangerous, he is eventually hit by a car and knocked unconscious.

“Two of One” firmly focuses on character development and examines the relationship between the android sisters as they struggle to reconcile their differences and come to terms with their true identities. “Two of One” was also very popular with fans because it featured the return of several beloved characters from Star Trek: The Next Generation , including Data and Q.

Star Trek: Picard Lands Perfect Rotten Tomatoes Score for Final Season

Season 3 of Star Trek: Picard will bring the franchise to a close, and it looks like it is going out on a high.

Star Trek: Picard is heading boldly into its third and final season on Paramount+, and the critic's reviews have delivered the show a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes . While there is still plenty of time for more reviews to come, and audiences have not had their say yet, the initial wave of critic scores has suggested that the Patrick Stewart-led series will be going out on a high after the new run of episodes.

Star Trek: Picard has been a successful return to the franchise for The New Generation ’s Enterprise Captain, with both previous seasons landing scores in the high 80s. With season 3’s reviews suggesting that the positive wave of love for the show will continue and grow as it reaches its climax, it is perhaps a good decision that this will be the last adventure for Picard.

Movieweb’s Julian Roman said in his review of the season’s opening six episodes:

“Star Trek: Picard’s flaws are evident, but season three definitely warrants viewing. it’s better than the disappointing second season. The Next Generation’s characters bring skin into the game. They have evolved, are well-acted despite the material’s shortcomings, and invoke the desired nostalgia. You’ll be fully engaged once the diabolical adversaries step out of the shadows.”

The synopsis for the final season reads:

“In the epic, thrilling conclusion of Star Trek: Picard, a desperate message from as long-lost friend draws Starfleet legend Admiral Jean-Luc Picard into the most daring mission of his life, forcing him to recruit allies spanning generations old and new. This final adventure sets him on a collision course with the legacy of his past and explosive new revelations that will alter the fate of the Federation forever. “

Star Trek: Picard Makes Good On the Promise of Many Familiar Faces Returning to the Show

Last year, there was a lot of teasing from Picard showrunner Terry Matalas about the amount of nostalgic returns fans would be getting in the show's final season. While these kinds of teases usually lead to disappointment, the series seems to have delivered exactly what it promised. Malalas previously discussed the pressure of delivering the proper ending and how bringing back old characters was a real thrill. He said:

"You had them all the time… there was one moment in particular… it's a legendary moment, let's just say. I will say they're all reunited. And there's some things going on and I remember turning to my assistant, and saying, 'Right now, I should be in tears, but I'm too fucking stressed to get this right.' Because I don't want to f--k it up. That's the key. The moments really hit in post, when now I can watch that moment and it's not Patrick, Frakes, LeVar, and Gates, and Marina, and Michael. It's Picard, and Riker, and Geordi. And the music is up. One of the things I've been spending a lot of time on right now is the music. It is very much in the spirit of [Jerry] Goldsmith and [James] Horner… And so when you see those moments with the score, then that hits. You're like, 'Oh, my God, we did this!' And funny enough, there are moments that are–because there are some people who come back from Star Trek in this season that aren't just the Next Gen cast. There's one character who is in Next Gen who I was like, 'I really want this character to come back.' And when they did, that was weirdly more thrilling than everything else in totality."

Star Trek: Picard is a Certified Fresh hit once again with its third season at 98% on the Tomatometer. And if the series finale has you ready to engage in similar shows, we’ve got five more like this that you should check out next. Along with more Star Trek and other great sci-fi shows, this list will be your “number one” as we boldly go where — not gonna lie — some have probably gone before.

BRAND-NEW PICK:

star trek picard rotten tomatoes

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds ,  a spin-off of the series Star Trek: Discovery , follows Captain Kirk’s predecessor on the Enterprise , Captain Christopher Pike, as he navigates the decade leading up to the original series.

With a 99% Certified Fresh first season under its belt, it’s clear critics are totally on board. And the consensus gives praise for “recapturing the sense of boundless discovery that defined the franchise’s roots.”

A second season of this Emmy-nominated show arrives June 15. In the meantime, you’ll need about 9 hours to check out the first season.

Where to Watch: by subscription on Paramount+ | buy season 1 on Vudu , Prime Video , or Apple TV

THROWBACK PICK:

Our throwback pick takes us back to the ’60s with the super-groovy original Star Trek series.

And sure, it’s a bit obvious but it’s also a must for this list — whether you’ve seen it already or not. Considered ahead of its time on many levels, it ran from ’66 to ’69 and gave us some pretty iconic characters, ultimately creating a franchise that has lived long and — done pretty well.

Star Trek has an overall Fresh score of 80% for the series with a Certified Fresh first season at 92%. And if you’re not sure about heading back this far for a show, the consensus form critics reminds us that it “may look dated, but its gadgetry and solid storytelling solidify its place as one of pop culture’s most enduring franchises.”

You’ll need about 66 hours to watch all three seasons.

Where to Watch: by subscription on Paramount+ | buy seasons 1-3 on Vudu , Prime Video , or Apple TV

AUDIENCE PICK:

Battlestar Galactica  is a re-imagining of the ’70s show that ran from 2004 to 2009. It was created by Ronald D. Moore who had previously worked on three different Star Trek series and went on to create the Starz fantasy series Outlander — so he knows what’s up, in other words.

This Edward James Olmos–led show earned 19 Emmy nominations and three wins. And not only was it a hit with fans, but critics also loved it, calling it a “captivating combination of riveting political drama and science fiction.”

You can watch all 74 episodes in just over 54 hours.

Where to Watch: by subscription on Peacock | buy seasons 1-4 on Vudu , Prime Video , or Apple TV

EDITORS’ PICK:

This sci-fi dramedy was created by Seth MacFarlane and is set 400 years in the future on an exploratory ship, that is facing both intergalactic and everyday life problems.

The series has a strong cast led by MacFarlane along with Adrianne Palicki and carries Fresh 77% Tomatometer and 89% Audience scores for its three-season run. Critics call The Orville “fun, focused and surprisingly thoughtful.”

You’re looking at about 26 hours of binge time for this series.

Where to Watch: by subscription on Hulu and Disney+ | buy seasons 1-3 on Vudu , Prime Video , or Apple TV

CERTIFIED FRESH PICK:

And finally, our Certified Fresh pick this week is Prime Video’s The Expanse . This one is set in a not-so-distant future where humanity has colonized the solar system. And clearly fans couldn’t get enough, considering they campaigned to save the show after it was canceled by Syfy.

With six very Fresh seasons, critics like The Expanse because it “blends sci-fi elements and detective noir into a visually compelling whole.”

You’re going to need nearly 62 hours to get through this one. But if you take it one hour at a time, it will only take 62 hours. You’re welcome.

Where to Watch: by subscription on Prime Video | buy seasons 1-6 on Vudu or Apple TV

Star Trek: Picard Season 3 Premieres With a 100% Rotten Tomatoes Score

The third and final season of Star Trek: Picard is off to a positive start, landing a perfect score on review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes.

Star: Trek Picard Season 3 is finally here, and early reviews indicate it could be the Paramount+ show's strongest yet.

As of this writing, Picard 's third and final season currently holds a 100% rating on the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes . This places it well ahead of Seasons 1 and 2, which currently hold 86% and 85% review scores, respectively. That said, Picard Season 3's score is only based on 17 professional reviews at this stage, which means there's a real possibility it could lose its perfect rating in the near future. What's more, Rotten Tomatoes is yet to bestow "Certified Fresh" status on Picard 's third season, as it is yet to meet the 20-review threshold involved.

Related: Worf's Evolution in Picard Was Inspired by Kill Bill

This initial rush of critical acclaim will nevertheless come as welcome news to Picard showrunner Terry Matalas , given his recent comments regarding the making of Season 3. According to Matalas, he operated with the complete trust of CBS Studios and production companies Secret Hideout, Weed Road Pictures, Escapist Fare and Roddenberry Entertainment, which emboldened him to take creative risks with the show. "I had a lot of trust given to me -- it was lovely -- by everyone involved, and I could not be more appreciative of that... it could be a complete failure," he said.

Picard Co-Creator on Season 4 Rumors

Fortunately for Matalas, it appears his approach to Picard Season 3 will send the Star Trek series out with a bang. This is despite persistent rumblings that additional seasons could now be on the cards. Notably, series co-creator and executive producer Alex Kurtzman recently hinted that another batch of Picard episodes might happen. While Kurtzman confirmed that Picard was always planned to end after Season 3, he added that audience demand could see the show's run extended. "[A]nything is possible," he said. "If a show blows the doors off the place, as we're certainly hoping it will, and we're very, very proud of Season 3, who knows?"

Jean-Luc Picard himself Patrick Stewart seems open to returning for more seasons, too. Stewart noted in a recent interview that Picard Season 3 will "leave doors open" for a potential Season 4 and suggested that he would be willing to participate. At the same time, the acclaimed thespian made it clear that he would only sign on for a fourth season of Picard if he was confident it could "maintain the work quality" of the previous three.

Star Trek: Picard Season 3 is currently streaming on Paramount+, with new episodes dropping Thursdays.

Screen Rant

Star trek: legacy gets boost as new report teases picard follow-up movie.

The proposed continuation for Star Trek: Picard season 3 dubbed Star Trek: Legacy may become a streaming movie according to a new report.

  • Star Trek: Legacy may become a movie instead of a TV series.
  • Rumored Star Trek streaming movie "Legacy" may happen if Section 31 succeeds, says Variety report.
  • Star Trek: Legacy has been campaigned for by fans since Picard season 3 ended.

Star Trek: Legacy , the rumored follow-up series to Star Trek: Picard , gets an update courtesy of a new report. In addition to reuniting the cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation for one last mission, Picard season 3 set up a new Star Trek show featuring Captain Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) as commander of the USS Enterprise-G, tentatively titled Star Trek: Legacy . The cast ideally would include Commander Raffi Musiker (Michelle Hurd) as First Officer; Ensign Jack Crusher (Ed Speleers), as well as several returning Picard characters.

A new Variety cover story about the future of the Star Trek franchise includes a long-awaited, albeit brief, update on the possibility of Star Trek: Legacy happening as a Star Trek streaming movie made for Paramount+ if Star Trek: Section 31 is a success. Read the quote below:

And Kurtzman is already eyeing more opportunities for TV movies, including a possible follow-up to “Picard.”

Star Trek Picard Season 3 Ending Explained (In Detail)

Why hasn't star trek: legacy been confirmed yet, short answer: money..

The fan-led campaigns to greenlight Star Trek: Legacy certainly show that demand for the new Star Trek: Picard spinoff exists, but demand alone isn't enough to warrant a whole new Star Trek series going into production. Even though Picard season 3 clearly set up Legacy , with its potential cast of new characters, Captain Seven catchphrase cliffhanger, and even a visit from Q (John de Lancie), there was never a guarantee that the premise would result in a multi-episode, ongoing Star Trek show, especially with 3 other Star Trek shows currently in production.

The new Variety report suggests that Star Trek: Legacy may come to exist as a streaming Star Trek movie, which would be a more financially sound move , even if it isn't exactly what fans have been clamoring for. Star Trek: Section 31 was intended as a series before being modified into a more cost-effective feature-length telefilm, and its success could lay the groundwork for a collection of similar Star Trek content on Paramount+. Legacy as a Star Trek movie may not be ideal, but it would still see the continuing adventures of the USS Enterprise-G crew, and that's better than no Star Trek: Legacy at all.

Star Trek: Discovery: Season 5 Reviews

star trek picard rotten tomatoes

There are some clever references to past series during these last 10 episodes, but they're reminders that "Discovery" was never in their league.

It's like watching the movie Step-Brothers without any of the jokes.

Full Review | Original Score: 2/5 | Apr 5, 2024

Although it struggles to give any sense of real danger, its amazing visuals, effective script, and sense of adventure will have us glued to the screen. [Full review in Spanish]

Full Review | Original Score: 3.5/5 | Apr 5, 2024

This season has a brisk pace and the sense of fun that in the past has been crushed under the weight of grave galactic stakes.

Full Review | Apr 3, 2024

As with The Original Series, this final run promises to represent the show as it was, good and bad, as Discovery makes its exit. That feels right somehow.

Full Review | Apr 2, 2024

It’s unquestionably the show’s best season since the move to the 32nd Century. If Discovery isn’t to your taste – and for many Trek fans, it isn’t – this season isn’t going to win you over. But for fans, Discovery looks set to go out with a bang.

A strong season-long McGuffin that brings the story fully into the new century.

Full Review | Original Score: 3/4 | Mar 29, 2024

Star Trek: Discovery ends with a season that is fun to watch but lacks the immediacy that a final season deserves.

Full Review | Original Score: 7/10 | Mar 28, 2024

Star Trek: Discovery wears its heart on its sleeve and opened the door to new viewers in the process. The final season kicked off at SXSW 2024, and the big screen premiere lived up to the venue.

Full Review | Original Score: 8/10 | Mar 15, 2024

The Trek series that relaunched the franchise is going out on an upbeat note.

Full Review | Mar 14, 2024

This show did its job. “Trek” is in a far better, more stable place now... And “Discovery” can take a well-earned victory lap before its well-earned decommissioning.

Full Review | Original Score: B- | Mar 14, 2024

Star Trek: Discovery season 5's intergalactic treasure hunt has all the cinematic thrills we've come to expect, but suffers from big pacing issues.

Full Review | Original Score: 3.5/5 | Mar 14, 2024

It all looks great, and the actors do the most they can with the material, but it doesn’t amount to much beyond a run-of-the-mill space opera. Indeed, the MacGuffin of a superweapon seems lifted from Star Wars rather than the best Trek outings.

Full Review | Original Score: 7/10 | Mar 13, 2024

Star Trek: Discovery starts its fifth and final season in fine fashion, setting up another season-long mystery but doing so with enough interesting character developments to avoid the pitfalls... that have sometimes plagued the show in the past.

Full Review | Original Score: 8/10 | Mar 12, 2024

The first four episodes of Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 offer a thrilling star to the series' final season and is enough to make fans want more.

Full Review | Original Score: 9/10 | Mar 12, 2024

Season 5 has some spectacular moments and no shortage of potential, but the ponderous storytelling will make you feel like Strange New Worlds and the brilliant Picard season 3 never happened.

Full Review | Original Score: 2.5/5 | Mar 12, 2024

There are signs of hope so far this season, enough to merit a passing grade — Rayner is practically a show-saver, and the return of Mary Wiseman’s mildly irreverent Tilly was a good call — but consider it highly conditional.

On top of a compelling treasure hunt-style story and its complex characters, Discovery Season 5 also delivers some incredible action sequences and truly breathtaking visuals.
