Having the right travel accessories in tow can make all the difference in having a smooth experience while traveling outside of the country. International flights and the trips they accompany do take some planning, and there are some essential travel items that I do not leave home without.

I have traveled to over 30 countries and also travel domestically at least twice a month, so consider myself a frequent traveler. In this post, I’m providing my list of the 43 best international travel accessories for 2023.

Hi! Nice article! Very good recommendations! Based on my own experience, the hanging luggage scale is very useful and saved me many times! I was able to pack everything the night before the flight, by spreading out heavier items. I never need to worry about going over the limit. It’s also simple to use and doesn’t take a lot of space. It’s my first time hearing about charging cases! I usually use a portable charger, which is actually pretty heavy. Thanks for the recommendation, I will definitely check it out.

I’ve done a lot of traveling over the years. The two items that are essential for me are the electric cord organizer and the international adapters. I know it sounds crazy, but when you’re traveling with electronic devices those cords go everywhere. Seriously, it’s a mess. And the adapters are almost critical for your international success if you bring anything electronic. I use to forget mine at home, but then I just keep them in my work bag. Great list! I think the only thing I don’t have on this list is the passport cover. Do you feel like a lot of customs agencies require you to remove it when you go through? I feel like this has happened to me in the past and the main reason I haven’t kept a cover on mine. I am going to certainly look into the phone camera lenses as well.

Hello, I have gone through your guide and seems to be interesting though I have one more concern on the WiFi devices. Can you recommend me on the best Pocket Device that will work well on anywhere I travel. I have using AllDayWifi but its very slow on their international data plan. Hi Michele, There are all great ideas. I have one more suggestion for you. Smart Blanket! I used it when flying to Zurich to see my son and his family. The plane was freezing, and there were no blankets to be had. I was the only one that was warm and cozy for the whole 8 hours. I love mine. The door alarm and aeroplane pillow are a great idea to stay comfy and safe! I always take an extension lead when I travel; so that I have more plug sockets in a hotel room, and it also means you don’t need as many adapters when you travel. You also can’t go wrong with baby wipes and small-ish plastic bags in case a seat is wet, a bottle is leaking or you’ve got a mark on your clothes! ✈️?

That's a lot of stuff to carry. I would reduce the bags to just one and save a lot of space and airline fees :)

thanks for sharing your thoughts. I gave some options here, of course. Anyway, I still believe that a mini flashlight is one of the really useful travel accessories. It takes almost nothing of space and it can be helpful. It's mini. After all, we don't need to have our phones with us all the time. :-)

Expert tips for international travel, organization is key.

Preparing for an international vacation can be quite overwhelming, especially if it's your first time leaving the country. "Find your inner Marie Kondo ," suggests flight attendant Anna Tune. "Organization is a must when traveling internationally.”

“I started separating my things into separate compartments and it has made such a difference in efficiency and time management. For example, I have a toiletry bag, makeup bag , electronics bag for all of my chargers , shoe bag and even a tote with all of my important documents," says Tune. "It not only makes things easier to find, but it is less likely you will leave something behind.”

Comfort > style

In terms of what to wear on a plane, you'll want to opt for a more relaxed look.

Tune agrees that being comfortable is imperative: “I always bring my own blanket. I get cold very easily and an extra blanket is a game changer for me on a long flight. Also, legs and ankles tend to swell on long flights. Wearing compression socks will help with the swelling and also keep you nice and warm.”

Don't forget the right adaptor

Domi, a professional flight attendant and world traveler, is no stranger to long trips. Her essential travel tip? “Don’t forget an international adaptor/charger for your phone so you can stay connected during the flight and anywhere in the world. An external power bank is also a good idea in case the socket on board doesn’t work."

Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate

Domi also advises travelers to drink a lot of water on board as the air can be very dry. “I always have an empty water bottle in my carry-on bag so I can pass it through security and then ask the flight attendant on board to refill my own bottle. Believe me, it’s less annoying than to ask for a glass of water every 30 minutes,” she says.

Don't be afraid to pack light

Professional pilot Stephen Sabato travels with the mentality that “less is more.”

“I use only a carry-on bag for work and for traveling internationally, no matter how long I am away. I feel like the key to traveling with luggage is to be able to have your bag with you on the plane. Just in case things go wrong, you can be flexible enough to have to change flights, especially if you are getting rebooked through a different connecting airport,” he says.

Check the rules of wherever you're going

Be sure to keep in mind that there are specific TSA rules for every country, so Sabato advises reading all of the information available on your chosen airline's website that pertains to your destination. "Most of the airlines have information dedicated to the countries that you are traveling to," he notes.

“For example, some countries require your passport to not be within six months of expiration. I have seen people turned away at customs in a foreign country for it, so there are a lot of little things that are important to look for,” Sabato says.

The slim pick opens up like a binder rather than a traditional jewelry box which takes up way less room in your luggage. We also really liked how durable the exterior is, as it felt like it would quite literally take a truck running over the pouch for it to incur any visible damage to the exterior.

The compact jewelry case has a lot of room for things like rings and stud earrings — but it only has four distinct spots for necklaces. You may need to double up or slip them into one of the other various pockets built into the binder but, if you like using a jewelry case to keep more than four necklaces from tangling, this might not be the best option for you.

Shopping for a money belt can be daunting — you want something that’s secure and able to store your goods properly but it’s just as important to find something you can wear for hours on end. We found the Raytix Money Belt comfortable and smooth on the skin, while also noting that it can expand to accommodate many different sizes. The material also feels extremely sturdy and durable so you won’t have to worry about the bag wearing out, even after multiple trips.

Although we like that this money belt is large enough to accommodate bigger items (like a passport) without having to struggle to squeeze these in, the size is a little bit bulky and is actually visible with certain clothing types. This might not be ideal if you’re looking for something extremely discreet under a light layer.

The Thermoflask Double Stainless Steel Insulated Water Bottle is by far the best water bottle that we tested. It’s not flashy or overly expensive like other popular reusable water bottles on the market right now but it’s extremely durable and versatile. We really liked that this option comes with two different lids, one with a built-in straw and one that resembles a more traditional water bottle mouth. We also liked that this option was thin enough to fit in a standard cup holder and also very easy to grip.

During the testing process, we noticed that the stainless steel bottle did get a few aesthetic dings with heavy usage. That being said, the bottle didn’t leak at all nor did it become damaged beyond use throughout the entire process. This makes it well worth the price in our books.

These headphones are intuitive to use and very comfortable to wear.

They don’t fit super tightly on the head.

If you’re willing to spend a bit of money, the Bose Noise Canceling Headphones are going to be a great option. We find the price point totally justifiable as we could hear every instrument as clearly as if we were hearing the music live. We also really liked that the headphones offer different levels of noise cancellation depending on your preference and setting. (Plus, you can easily tap directly on the headphones to change the level or you can do it in the smartphone app.) We found a very dramatic difference from level 0 to level 10 which is great for transitioning from, say, walking in the city to settling into a sold-out red-eye flight. It’s worth noting that at the highest level of cancellation, the tester couldn’t hear a single thing so it’s important to be mindful of your surroundings.

These headphones also earned the top spot in our books due to the fact that they’re extremely comfortable and didn’t cause irritation even when wearing them for hours on end but that also means they don't fit as tightly as some others we tried.

Best Wireless Earbuds

These earbuds are super fast-charging and easy to connect to all devices.

The size is a bit more bulky than comparable wireless earbuds.

During the testing process, it was clear that the Bose QuietComfort Earbuds II were the best option out of all the competing products. The earbuds were extremely quick to charge and had a 16-hour battery life which is more than enough to get you through most flights or the day-to-day. We also found the wireless Bluetooth functionality was very efficient and easy to pair with everything from a smartphone to a Roku TV, plus the noise-canceling capabilities were sufficient for drowning out the subway sounds or city streets while on the go.

The main drawback we noticed with this set is the bulkier size; these earbuds are quite a bit larger than the average earbud and might take some getting used to. The good part is that they come with three different tip sizes so you can adjust the in-ear part of the bud to properly fit your ear.

We really liked this pair for the thick material and sturdy arms; it felt as if they would last even with frequent, less careful usage. We were able to place these sunglasses on our heads multiple times throughout the testing period and haven’t noticed any stretching or widening of the arms so, if they fit now, you know they’ll fit a year from now, too.

Keep in mind that these sunglasses unfortunately only come in one size and the width might be too large for anyone with a particularly petite face structure.

We tested dozens of sunglasses and this pair rose to the top for a lightweight design and stylish but versatile aesthetic. We found this pair to be so comfortable that we actually forgot we were wearing sunglasses at all. The dark polarized lenses also offered the right amount of sun protection without necessarily being too dark or difficult to see out of while in the shade.

Although we found these sunglasses to be very comfortable (even during long days), it’s worth noting that the frames are a bit small compared to other sunglasses for men. This shouldn’t be an issue for most but if you do have a more broad face structure, it’s something to be aware of.

We loved that this pair was functional and efficient but still looked like any other sock. We were able to wear them with regular outfits and nobody would be the wiser, plus the lightweight, cotton/polyester blend held up extremely well, even after multiple wears and washes.

It’s admittedly quite expensive for a single pair of socks — but these compression socks are comfortable, durable, and surprisingly stylish so it’s worth the investment for a pair that’ll last for years.

The installation process might involve some trial and error at first.

The Andobil Car Phone Holder Mount will be the last phone holder mount you’ll purchase — or at least that’s how we felt after trying this for ourselves. It can be set in any position once installed and it doesn’t wobble around or fall off. It also has space on the bottom for a charging cable and a built-in release button so you don’t have to worry about squeezing your phone in and out each time you leave your car.

The only downside we noticed was that the installation process might involve some trial and error. This phone holder mount has three different options for installation in your vehicle: there’s a suction cup using a 3M pad to stick on the dashboard or directly onto the windshield, or there’s a different attachment to click into the vent instead. This is great for variety’s sake but can mean trying out a few different methods to see what you like best.

Tips for Buying Travel Accessories

Prioritize usability.

There are a lot of really nifty travel accessories on the market, but when you’re shopping for your next trip you’ll want to really focus on usability over novelty (not to say unique and practical items don't exist). Consider whether or not each item is actually essential for your trip or the destinations you frequent. You’ll also want to reference real-world reviews — like ours — to get an idea of how well a given item works and whether or not it’ll last through the rigors of regular travel. Your carry-on and checked luggage space is precious so there’s no sense filling it with accessories that won’t streamline your experience.

Consider your trip length and type

Each trip will require a slightly different packing list so to avoid overpacking you’ll want to be sure to think about what each item will actually bring to the table. For example, if you’ve scored an upgrade to business class for your red-eye, you can probably leave your travel pillow at home this time. If you’re jetting off for a quick weekend trip, you likely won’t have to bother with packing cubes the same way you would for a multi-destination trip with different climates to consider.

How we selected the best travel accessories

As a frequent and intrepid traveler, I’ve spent a lot of time on long-haul flights to countries across the globe. I’ve pedaled my bicycle across Central Asia from Mongolia to Turkey, over the Karakoram and the Caucasus Mountains, and through most of Europe. My “day job” as a tailor and pattern maker for film and television also sometimes sends me out of town to work for up to eight months at a time. (I’ve spent an inordinate number of nights at Marriott Residence Inns across the United States—which are decorated exactly the same.)

After logging so many miles, I’ve had the opportunity to road-test a lot of traveling gear and gadgets over the years. And, like most regular globetrotters, I have a tried and true list of travel accessories I carry with me on any trip. My preferences skew towards things that can withstand being shoved into a bag on a bicycle and bounced over rocky terrain for days on end and still work perfectly. (Thank you, 2017 12-inch MacBook.)

Different kinds of travelers will gravitate toward different kinds of travel products (obviously). We combed through a variety of options to come up with the best travel accessories that will hopefully be useful to the highest number of people on the widest variety of trips.

Things to consider before buying travel accessories

The best travel accessories save you time, space, and money. There’s a lot of uncertainty and a decided lack of control involved when you’re traveling, especially by air. Being prepared with the means to make your trip easier and more comfortable can go a long way to alleviating the inherent stress of the journey. And while you may not be able to do anything about a flight that was just delayed for five hours for no apparent reason, at least you know you can keep your phone charged and watch your stories while you wait.

Design/usefulness : This may seem like a no-brainer, but the first thing to keep in mind when purchasing a piece of travel gear is how it will fit into your routine on the road. Does the thing you’re buying do what it claims effectively without unnecessary parts or features that you can’t figure out how to use. We looked for travel products that were intuitive, so you can think to yourself, “Gee, I wish this wallet had a place I could easily store and access my coin euros” and then you discover that it actually does have just that thing.

Versatility : The best travel aids offer solutions to many common issues on the road and are helpful on many kinds of trips. While you may love the idea of having a “Paris overcoat” or an “Aspen ski jacket,” we don’t necessarily think there are best travel accessories for Europe or any other specific place. The best travel items are those you take with you on every trip, no matter how where you’re going or how long you’ll be away. 

Durability : No one likes having things break, but travel gear that doesn’t stand up to the normal wear and tear of life on the road can be especially annoying and frustrating. Things like luggage wheels or handles breaking, zippers going off track, or a bicycle handlebar camera mount coming apart in the middle of a rocky downhill ride. These are not good things. Good travel gear survives baggage handlers across the world, getting tossed out of tuk-tuks, and bouncing along in the belly of a bus on an ill-maintained mountain road with amazing views.

Weight and volume : Packing is always a weight and volume game, especially since airlines charge you more for what they consider “overweight” luggage. Thus, the best travel accessories should be comparatively light and take up as little space as possible. My own general rule is that anything that weighs more than 16 ounces must serve a very important function. When packing for my multimonth Silk Road bicycle trip, the only item more than 1 pound was my “travel” laptop, which weighed in at 2.03 pounds.

The travel accessories on this list perform a variety of functions, but they are all essential in their own ways. Once you’ve traveled with them once, you’ll probably wonder how you ever made do without them.

Best travel wallet: Pacsafe RFIDsafe V150 RFID-Blocking Compact Organizer

Why it made the cut: The Pacsafe RFIDsafe V150 features designated spaces for passport, credit cards and cash. Plus its strong all-around zipper closure prevents things from falling out.

While many are partial to Fjallraven passport wallets —we like them, too—the PacSafe travel wallet with RIFDsafe goes a step further, keeping credit cards, sensitive documents, and data protected from any electronic-scanning theft attempts.

The inside of the PacSafe V150 has a passport slot, multiple credit card slots, a small zippered pouch, and a large section for paper currency and other documents. On the outside is a zippered coin pocket so you can fish out change without opening the whole wallet. The heavy-duty exterior zipper that encloses the entire wallet is durable and holds up to repeated overstuffing.

The Pacsafe RFIDsafe V150’s larger size allows you to fit a smartphone inside (so long as it’s not bigger than 6.5 inches tall) by simply placing it in the middle, folding, and zipping. It’s great for when you’re just going out to eat and don’t want to carry a bigger bag, or you’re wearing something with a glaring lack of appropriately sized pockets.

That said, because of its size, the V150 forces you to live the “travel wallet lifestyle,” with your money strapped to your chest. Unzipping the outer zip and fishing out what you need while wearing the PacSafe can result in some awkward maneuvering and things unsecured inside falling out so be cautious when performing that trick.

Best travel accessory for long flights: Sony WH-1000XM5 Wireless Noise-Canceling Over-Ear Headphones 

Why it made the cut: The Sony WH-1000XM5 noise-canceling headphones allow you to sleep, listen to music, or watch whatever you want in comfort and relative peace.

Having spent the pandemic spring and summer of 2020 living in a New York City apartment next door to a building undergoing a gut renovation (the entire time), I can attest that Sony’s WH-1000XM5 noise-canceling wireless headphones not only effectively drown out annoying background noise, but are also comfortable enough to wear all day without becoming excessively warm.

A great Bluetooth headphone that multiple folks at PopSci cosign , the WH-1000XM5 comes with a case, wired headphone jack, and an adaptor so you can plug into the dual-pronged jack standard in most airplanes. The touch sensors on each ear cup allow you to skip tracks, adjust the volume, and answer phone calls. The Sony headphone companion app lets you personalize your settings and helps connect multiple devices.

If you have trouble sleeping in hotels with hallway or street noise, these headphones will successfully mask a lot, especially when coupled with a white noise app. The padded headband and ear cups even make it possible to sleep on your side with them on—though that does require positioning your pillow at just the right angle.

Trtl’s travel pillow will be nothing short of a revelation for frequent travelers. A plastic support keeps your head elevated at a comfortable angle while sleeping, so you don’t end up with a stiff neck. The pillow wraps around your neck, which makes it guaranteed to fit snuggly and securely, which is a big step up over traditional inflatable travel pillows. We have no complaints about Trtl’s pillow, but it may take a little while to adjust to this style of neck pillow if you’re used to an inflatable one. Once that moment has passed, it’s smooth sailing in the sky.

Reusable water bottles are Earth-friendly, sustainable, and mean that you never have to pay $4 for a bottle of water in the airport again. Many airports these days have dedicated fountains to fill your bottle, usually right next to (or part of) the standard drinking fountains near the restrooms. 

Remember that you won’t be able to take a bottle with water in it through security. Once inside the airport, you’ll be able to fill it up and, in most instances, bring it on board. If you’re flying to the United States through a major international hub like Doha or Dubai, you’ll have to empty it before passing through security to the gate. There’s always a drinking fountain on the other side where you can fill back up, though.

Like all things Osprey manufactures, the Sojourn 45L is an extremely durable bag with zippers that will withstand excessive over-stuffing—which, as far as I am concerned, is the true test of any backpack or suitcase.

The wheels and high chassis allow the Sojourn to happily thumpity-thump over cobbled roads and uneven terrain. If the path becomes particularly roll-adverse, you can easily transform the Sojourn into a fairly comfortable backpack. We wouldn’t recommend any kind of hiking with the Sojourn in backpack mode, but it is sufficiently doable for shorter distances—such as navigating through a place like the medina of Chefchaouen, Morocco, where there are too many stairs.

The hip belt and backpack mechanism take up space inside the bag but you can still fit enough gear and clothing for an extended trip if you are a light packer. You can also easily attach a Daylite backpack to the front via clips for added capacity if needed.

There are a lot of different kinds of travel accessories, so the prices will vary a lot depending on what you’re looking for. Some things, like wall chargers and neck pillows, can cost $20 to $50. Larger items, like suitcases and bags, can get much more expensive because they’re manufactured with materials that will hold up through rough handling and environments.  In general, we strongly advise avoiding the cheapest possible version of a travel accessory. I don’t want to buy something that breaks and needs to be replaced, especially mid-trip. In my experience, paying a little more for higher quality means I won’t have to purchase that same thing again when it inevitably breaks.
