The Ultimate Guide to Choosing the Perfect Small Travel Bag

Are you planning a weekend getaway or a short business trip? Choosing the right travel bag is essential to ensure a hassle-free and organized trip. Small travel bags are becoming increasingly popular due to their convenience and portability. In this ultimate guide, we will explore everything you need to know about choosing the perfect small travel bag.

Types of Small Travel Bags

When it comes to small travel bags, there are several options available in the market. Understanding the different types will help you make an informed decision based on your specific needs and preferences.

Backpacks: Backpacks are a versatile option for travelers who prefer hands-free carrying. Look for backpacks with multiple compartments and padded straps for added comfort. Some backpacks even come with built-in charging ports or laptop sleeves, making them ideal for tech-savvy travelers.

Duffel Bags: Duffel bags offer ample storage space and are perfect for those who like to pack more than just essentials. Look for duffel bags with sturdy handles and shoulder straps for easy carrying. Additionally, choose ones with durable materials that can withstand rough handling during your travels.

Tote Bags: Tote bags are stylish yet functional options for short trips. They usually have one spacious compartment but may also include smaller pockets for organization. Opt for tote bags made from durable materials such as canvas or nylon, as they can withstand wear and tear.

Considerations When Choosing a Small Travel Bag

Now that you know about the different types of small travel bags available, it’s important to consider certain factors before making your final decision.

Size and Capacity: Assess how much you need to pack before choosing the size of your small travel bag. Ensure it meets airline carry-on regulations if you plan on using it as cabin luggage.

Durability: Look for bags made from high-quality materials such as nylon or polyester, as they are more resistant to tears and water damage. Reinforced stitching and sturdy zippers are also important considerations for durability.

Comfort: Consider the bag’s carrying options, such as padded straps or handles, to ensure maximum comfort during your travels. Additionally, bags with adjustable straps allow you to customize the fit according to your height and preference.

Organization: Look for small travel bags with multiple compartments or pockets to keep your belongings organized. This will save you time and effort when searching for specific items.

Additional Features to Consider

Apart from the basic considerations mentioned above, there are some additional features that can enhance your travel experience.

Security Features: Opt for small travel bags with built-in security features such as lockable zippers or hidden pockets. These features add an extra layer of protection for your valuables during your trip.

Accessibility: Choose a bag that allows easy access to essential items like passports, tickets, or electronics without having to dig through the entire bag. Bags with external pockets or compartments can provide quick and convenient access when needed.

Maintenance and Care Tips

To ensure the longevity of your small travel bag, it’s important to follow proper maintenance and care guidelines.

Cleaning: Regularly clean your bag according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Use mild soap and warm water to remove dirt or stains gently. Avoid using harsh chemicals that may damage the material.

Storage: When not in use, store your small travel bag in a cool and dry place away from direct sunlight. Ensure it is properly aired out before storing it long-term to prevent mold or mildew growth.

In conclusion, choosing the perfect small travel bag requires careful consideration of factors such as size, durability, comfort, organization, additional features, maintenance, and care tips. By keeping these aspects in mind while making your selection, you can find a small travel bag that suits your needs and ensures a stress-free travel experience. Happy travels.

The 11 Best Garment Bags for Traveling to Wedding Events, Tested & Reviewed

travel garment bag long

Brides / Jessica Juliao

Whether your special day is held locally or afar, proper clothing storage is essential. After you’ve spent all that time and money finding your perfect wedding outfits, you’ll want to ensure your garments are protected , wrinkle-free, and looking brand new.

“Safely packing your wedding attire for travel and preserving it after the wedding day is crucial for the longevity of your garments,” says bridal salon sales director Gabrielle LaJudice. “High-end pieces require special care.” Your wedding dress may be at the top of the list when it comes to important clothing items, so you'll want to do everything possible to preserve it before the big day. That's where a garment bag comes in.

If you’ve never used a garment bag before, it can be confusing to know where to start. LaJudice recommends looking for garment bags with high-quality fabrics—but no plastic. “It can wear the quality of the fabric and appliqué very quickly and cause discoloration,” she says. “Use garment bags that are UV protected with a resilient cloth that won't cause wear and tear to the garment."

In order to keep your outfits and special pieces looking fresh and new, we researched the best garment bags on the market today. We then tested a few for ourselves. We made our final selection based on ease of use, capacity, materials, and overall quality.

Read on for the best garment bags for brides.

  • What to Look For

Why Trust Brides

Best details, wallybags 60 inch deluxe travel garment bag.

Lightweight, convenient, and stylish, this option from WallyBags will get your clothes to the bridal suite hassle-free and wrinkle-free. While testing, what stood out to us was the hanger clamp that securely held all the hangers with clothes in place. The bag was able to carry six hangers holding dresses, pants, shirts, and jackets, and based on our test, it probably could have held about four more. That means you can dedicate a single bag to all of your bridesmaids' dresses—how convenient is that? Plus, we determined that the fabric seems durable and able to withstand transportation.

Best Material

Away the garment bag.

Keep your pieces dry and protected from the elements with the Away garment bag. Designed to fit perfectly inside any Away suitcase, this bag is made with water-resistant nylon and classic leather details, clips into your luggage, and features interior and exterior pockets for storing accessories or jewelry. After testing, we determined that this bag feels super high-quality. We found that the material was sleek and the zippers felt very sturdy and well-made.

We especially loved the size of this garment bag. While it's meant to be a stand-alone bag, we found it to be easy to carry as a tote, duffel, or looped through a luggage handle. We packed this bag with a floor-length dress, a pair of heels, and a pair of loafers, and there was still tons of room left over for other items.

Price at time of publish: $195

Size:  22.5" x 3.35" x 20.5" | Weight: 2.25 lbs. without shoulder strap, 2.7 lbs. with shoulder strap

Best for Suits

Zegur suit carry on garment bag.

With multiple interior and exterior storage pockets, Zegur's anti-crumple piping structure helps to ensure your suits stay protected, wrinkle-free, and undamaged even when thrown around an overhead bin. The bag features multiple carrying options like in-hand or over-the-shoulder and can be attached to rolling luggage handles so your arm never gets tired. We were amazed by this garment bag when testing it out. It fit a suit jacket, pants, button-down shirt, a belt, and dress shoes with plenty of room to spare. The bag had a hook that was so easy to use and attach hangers to. We would definitely use this bag to travel for both business events and, of course, weddings.

The quality of the bag also felt great. It seemed durable and like it could withstand damage and natural elements that you might encounter while traveling. Our favorite part of the bag was the organization of the internal space. When traveling for a wedding, we found that there were numerous places to put any cufflinks, bowties, suspenders and any other accessories that go along with formal clothing. There was even enough space for two pairs of shoes.

Price at time of publish: $85

Size: 22" x 22" x 4" | Weight: 3 lbs.

Easiest to Pack

Tumi garment cover.

Tumi is one of the most widely known and respected brands for high-quality, premium luggage, so this is definitely a splurge you can feel confident in. This convenient and easy-to-carry garment bag features durable nylon material with chic leather trim. While we do wish it was a bit longer to better fit floor-length wedding gowns, we determined that it was very easy to use and pack. Once folded, we were able to fit this in both a carry-on bag and a checked bag, making it ideal for destination weddings or honeymoons.

What to Look for in a Garment Bag

Size and capacity.

When shopping for your new garment bag, you’ll want to consider a few key factors. First, identify your intended use and how much you plan to pack inside. The size (dimensions) of your garment bag will determine how much you can pack, but you can also consider other storage features like hidden compartments, external zippered slots, added shoe storage, etc.

Size is especially important if you plan to use your garment bag for a destination wedding . A pro tip: select a garment bag that is big enough to fit a wedding dress, suits, shoes, and surrounding wedding activity outfits. You can use this as your carry on (some airlines will allow you to hang your garment bag in the plane’s closet—just don’t forget it when you’re exiting the aircraft!).

You’ll also want to consider the garment bag’s material, which is especially important if you are in a rainy or snowy environment. You’ll want to ensure the bag is weatherproof and/or water-resistant, so the contents of your bag don’t get wet or ruined. Look for language like “wrinkle-free” in the item description to ensure your garment bag has systems in place to protect your items. Budget is also something to consider; garment bag pricing varies greatly. If cost is a concern, trust that our budget picks are still excellent choices.

You can usually hang your wedding dress on a hanger inside the garment bag, folding it over once or twice depending on the style of the bag. “Always put your finger behind the zipper when opening and closing your garment bags,” says LaJudice. “Delicate fabrics are of course easy to snag when opening and closing garment bags. This is such an easy trick to stop any potential damage.”

Yes, it counts. Most garment bags are suitable to carry on planes, but you’ll have to check your airline’s specifications.

Bifold garment bags fold once in the middle and are the most common type of garment bag. You can attach the bottom part to the top to carry it as one piece, and they tend to be much bigger and more spacious than trifold bags.

Trifold bags have two folds, and are typically more lightweight and compact than bifold bags. That also means they can also carry less. However, they are great for travel because they fit so easily in overhead bins and can easily attach to your other luggage.

8 Best Garment Bags for Reducing Wrinkles

No more rumpled dresses and dress shirts.

Headshot of Abigail Bailey

Garment bags can take many forms, from shoulder-strapped to rolling to flat inserts — but regardless of the style, there's a few different reasons you might opt for a garment bag instead of a suitcase. They're ideal for keeping suits well-pressed and wrinkle-free in transit, and great for business trips where you might not need (or want) a full suitcase just for a couple days. And with all of the drama that comes with checked luggage getting lost, you might want one for special occasion dresses — like a wedding dress, a bridesmaid dress or a special uniform — so you can keep them near you instead of checking them.

After shopping our top garment bags for your trip, keep reading to learn more about what we look for in a top-performing garment bag as well as a buying guide from our fiber science and travel experts.

If you're checking a larger bag, a garment bag that fits inside of your suitcase instead of a carry-on is an option if you already have something you'd like to bring on the plane. The Centerfold Garment Sleeve from Away is designed to fit into their Bigger Carry-On, but it would be a great addition to any suitcase. It clips inside of luggage and has tiered loops to accommodate multiple hangers . It can also be carried if you prefer to not fold it up. When you reach your destination, unzip the bottom to allow your garment to fully hang instead of staying bunched up at the base. There's only two zippered pockets for accessories or other small items. The nylon is water-resistant, but not fully waterproof.

About the size of a briefcase, this compact garment bag has a strap across the back of the bag that you can slide over your suitcase handle so there's less for you to hold as you make your way around the airport. If you do choose to carry it, there's an adjustable shoulder strap as well. There's a front organizing pocket for easy access to smaller electronics like a phone and a tablet, making it a convenient carry-on bag . Unfolded, this water-resistant bag hangs at 47 inches, so it's too short for full-length dresses, but it's a great size for jackets, short dresses and dress shirts. The panel that flips out is also full of pockets for stashing jewelry, accessories, shoes and ties.

Hartmann is definitely on the expensive side, but their classic nylon tweed fabric never goes out of style, plus it's treated to be water- and stain-resistant. But what's really great is the Tweed Legend Voyager Spinner has four spinning wheels so you get the ease of a spinner suitcase with the function of a garment bag to make whizzing through the airport terminal a breeze. There are plenty of compartments to keep organized, along with two triangle-shaped pockets to utilize the space by the shoulders of the garments. Hartmann is a top performer in our tests and it even landed as "best for frequent fliers" in our best luggage brands of 2023 . While we haven't tested this specific garment bag, we love their spacious interiors that are easy to pack and wheels that are smooth and comfortable to maneuver.

If you're looking for a no-frills, grab-and-go garment bag, this water-resistant Amazon Basics one is a great option. It comes with a shoulder strap for comfortable carrying and multiple pockets for shoes, undergarments and other items . There's also a front pocket for additional storage and a strap along the back for hooking on your luggage handle. In our testing, we've found the luggage from Amazon Basics to be easy to pack. While it might not be the best quality out there, you can't beat their price.

Briggs & Riley 22" Carry-On 2-Wheel Garment Bag

Most wheeled garment bags unfold from the top or bottom, so you end up with luggage that's wider than it is tall, which can get weird when trying to shove in an overhead bin (especially for airlines that are strangely particular about how you put bags up there). Briggs & Riley's 22" Carry-On 2-Wheel Garment Bag folds out from the side, so it's shaped like a regular suitcase — taller than it is wide . There are two sections, one for flat packing and one for hanging garments, with lots of little pockets in the unused space to make maximum use of the bag. While Briggs & Riley bags are pricey, they come with a lifetime guarantee that will cover all repairs if the luggage is broken or damaged. They have authorized repair centers to fix luggage, will repair or replace with the closest matching part and they even have DIY repair kits if you're feeling a little handy.

When you think "garment bag," the first thing that comes to mind probably isn't a compression cube, but this one from Eagle Creek is designed to compress your clothes to take up less space while keeping them looking sharp. The water-resistant polyester case comes with a folding board with printed instructions on how to fold dress shirts and slacks to fit into the bag and how to use it to reduce wrinkles . If you're using a duffle bag or a backpack, packing cubes keep all of your times organized, and with this one, now you can take your fancy threads in the duffle, too.

Long or voluminous formal dresses can be a real pain to travel with because they're so big and cumbersome. Not to mention, if you're traveling to an important event with a wedding or bridesmaid dress, you do not want to keep it in checked luggage, lest you be stuck in an airport — sans dress — at the customer service counter trying to track down your suitcase. For full-length dresses, you need a long garment bag to fit the entire garment without it bunching up and wrinkling at the bottom of the bag. This 72-inch-long garment bag has a 10-inch gusset so it can expand to accommodate styles with a particularly puffy lower half (like dresses designed with layers of tulle, crinoline or a train). Available in five different colors and patterns, the water-resistant polyethylene material will protect clothing from damage. Keep in mind that it is a pretty bare-bones garment bag, so there are no extra pockets or other bells and whistles like the other bags on our list.

Calpak finds a nice balance between functionality and fashion with unique styles that are well-made with plenty of features. The Compakt Large Garment Bag can either be carried on its own or it can be placed inside luggage and unpacked upon arrival. Made of water-resistant ripstop nylon, it's 48 inches long when unfolded, so it's a great size for short dresses , and there are seven pockets that fit two pairs of shoes and other accessories. Long dresses will hang out the bottom of the bag, but once the bag is folded up it will cover the hem. The Calpak garment bag comes six fashionable colors and prints that are mostly the same across their product line, so you can coordinate your luggage and bags to match, too.

How we chose the best garment bags

line break

To get a sense of what makes a good garment bag, our Textiles Lab pros weighed in using their years of expertise in their field. We combed through online reviews of the most popular garment bags on the market, considering material, size, extra features, durability and ease of use to determine top picks. This list includes our experts' top-tested picks, as well as popular products with rave reviews from brands we trust.

Are garment bags worth it?

line break

Garment bags help keep your clothing pressed and wrinkle-free while traveling, so you can just take out and hang clothing once upon arrival. They're ideal for clothing you don't want to fold or roll into a suitcase, like a suit, dress shirts, dresses and skirts. Some are designed to be folded compactly and placed inside a suitcase, while others can be carried as luggage. Most bags will fold in half or thirds, but they are made with padded interior straps to keep clothes from shifting around in transit and prevent creases. Just be sure to lay garments completely flat before folding into a bag to help reduce wrinkles.

Garment bags can make a great carry-on when flying. However, it's important to note the garment bag's dimensions to ensure that it complies with the airline's listed size restrictions. If you're taking a short trip and you'll be bringing nice clothing, you can use a garment bag as a carry-on along with a small duffle as your personal item to save you the trouble of having to check a bag. Plus, anyone who's felt the pain of an airline losing a suitcase knows that when it comes to important items that can't be replaced— special clothing like a uniform, bridesmaid dress or wedding dress, for example — you might just want to go with a garment bag and carry that clothing with you at all times.

What to look for when shopping for garment bags

✔️ Size and shape: Garment bags are available in different lengths, so it's important to consider the linear dimension to ensure the garment bag is long enough to accommodate your clothing. Otherwise, if the garment bag's length is on the short side, the bottom of your garments may have to be folded or bunched at the base of the bag, which will increase the chance of wrinkling. Longer garment bags are great to hold formal dresses, jumpsuits or a full suit. For shorter clothing like tops, jackets and mini dresses, a smaller bag should work just fine.

✔️ Materials: Just like any travel bag, you want a style made of durable materials. If fabric denier is listed in the product description, the higher the denier, the thicker and stronger the fabric is. Nylon is known to be durable and water resistant while polyester is more affordable. Leather is a luxury pick that should last long term, but make sure to follow the care closely. Opt for water-resistant finishes too, especially when traveling with your favorite clothing items.

✔️ Features: To make the garment bag more comfortable to carry around, choose features like a padded shoulder strap, easy access handles and accessible front pockets to hold necessities. If you're considering taking a garment bag instead of a suitcase, make sure it has large enough pockets to hold any other items that you're packing (like shoes, accessories and undergarments).

Traveling is great for many things: seeing new cities, tasting new foods, and getting some much-needed R&R. What is it not great for? Keeping clothes wrinkle-free. Yes, no matter how you slice it, clothes need to go in a bag to be transported (unless, of course, you wear everything as Joey did on “Friends”), which means your chances of crumpled duds increase. But not all hope is lost. There’s one tool that can keep your favorite ensembles as smooth as can be: garment bags. Not only that, these handy attire vessels protect against the elements no matter where your travels take you. And with the need for such a crafty carrier, it’s no surprise there are tons to choose from. Here we break down the best available.

This material is more durable than typical garment bags, and the heavy-duty nylon zipper is designed for longevity. The bags also have a metal eyelet on the bottom for easy folding, so you can pack them in a suitcase without your clothes getting terribly wrinkled.

The Univivi bags also come with a plastic window so you can easily identify your clothes, and each has a PVC cover across the top opening for added protection. This cover is instrumental if you want to use one of these bags for garment storage, as it keeps out dust and moths much better than a standard open-top bag.

Best Budget

Pinstripe design

Rip and tear resistant

Zipper function complaints

Although this garment bag is inexpensive, you wouldn’t know by the look of it. The pinstripe pattern adds a level of sophistication, while the non-woven 80 GSM polypropylene ensures the bag is water, rip, and tear-resistant—if it can handle those elements, it’s sure to keep your suits and dresses safe from dirt and dust. But you can still see what’s inside thanks to the 5 x 5-inch window. The one major complaint from reviewers was that the zipper didn’t go all the way to the bottom, meaning you have to tuck in long items awkwardly.

Best Foldable

Modoker convertible garment bag.

Novel design

Lots of pockets

Suitcase sleeve for easy transportation

Not great for the long haul

You wouldn't even know this is a garment bag from the looks of it. The unique design rolls up in a way that transforms it into a 45-liter weekender duffle bag. Yes, you place all of your garments in the hanging bag, then roll it up as instructed, and you'll still have a shoe pouch and side pocket for your passport, keys, and other small items. Clothes stay wrinkle-free for that business trip, and you don't need to carry another bag along with you. Bonus: it features water- and tear-resistant fabric and has a detachable shoulder strap.

Our tester took this bag from Boston to Chicago for a wedding and could fit dress shoes, a belt, two pairs of socks, two t-shirts, two long sleeve t-shirts, two pairs of boxers, a pair of shorts, a rain jacket, and his suit. "I love how the bag rolls/folds into a duffel-like bag, and the textured gray exterior is stylish," the tester reported. "It felt a bit tight to get everything in, and figuring out how to zip the bag up into duffel shape took a minute, but it was worth it in the end. I've never seen a garment bag so compact and easy to carry, and I appreciated the dedicated shoe compartment. I'd have liked a bit more space for non-suit items, but overall I was pleased with the bag."

Best for Suits

Zegur suit carry on garment bag.

Sturdy waterproof construction

Additional pockets

Interior buckle keeps suits in place

Won’t fit in the overhead on smaller planes

When traveling, the last thing you want to do is iron suits. Well, this garment bag should eliminate that hassle. It features a sturdy, waterproof material that feels more like a high-end suitcase than a garment bag. Plus, suits come with many accouterments like ties, cufflinks, dress socks, shoes, and more. This bag has a special spot for it all, so getting dressed will be a breeze. Not to mention, the interior compartment for the actual suits features a dual buckler to ensure garments stay clean, neat, and in place. No wonder it's one of the top-reviewed items on Amazon.

We tested this bag on a wedding trip from Boston to Austin, and it fit everything our tester needed for the weekend, including a suit, toiletries, a hat, a pair of socks, dress shoes, three pairs of underwear, three t-shirts, two pairs of shorts, a phone charger, and sunglasses. "I loved the bag's light weight and the many pouches for items besides my suit," our tester reported. "I'd have appreciated a bit more padding on the shoulder strap, which was slightly uncomfortable and slid around a little, but I was quite pleased with the bag overall, particularly how much I could get into it."

Best Clear Bag

Durability is questionable

To easily spot garments in a closet, this bag features a clear "window." It's made of high-quality material and comes in a set of three bags in 55-inch, 47-inch, and 40-inch lengths (each with a 24-inch width). The bags have sturdy zippers and are water-resistant. The lightweight fabric makes the bags easy to travel with, and they can easily fold into a carry-on bag . Additionally, several shirts and pants can be stored in each bag, and the bottoms are closed to protect from dust.

Best for Longer Garments

Hangerworld 60-inch black suit or dress garment bag.

Internal pockets

Good for humid environments

Fragile material

For those requiring a longer garment bag, this one from Hangerworld measures 60 x 24 inches—perfect for taller individuals. The garment bag also features an internal pocket for jewelry, lingerie, or other small items and a clear identification holder. Made of soft, breathable material that’s perfect for tropical weather, it is an excellent choice for cruises requiring formal wear. The bag can fold upward to make room for shorter items and can hold up to three (or possibly four) garments at once. The cotton-like material is very lightweight, so it’s not for those who prefer a heavier garment bag.

Best for Storage

Dalix professional garment dress foldable bag.

Exterior storage pockets

Dalix has designed a garment bag with convenient storage pockets on the outside for shoes, cufflinks, jewelry, or other accessories. Available in green, blue, pink, red, or purple, the polyester piece stands out in the crowd and measures 57 x 21 inches. Up to three suits or gowns can easily fit in the bag, or six lighter items of clothing like sundresses or shirts. The durable bag has two handles to fold easily and transport. An identification slot helps protect garments from being misplaced at the airport or on the cruise ship.

Best for Undergarments

Bagail mesh laundry bag set.

Easy organization

See-through for easy identification

Unique sizing

Not long lasting

Separating clean and dirty laundry is essential when traveling (particularly on lengthier trips), and the Bagail five-piece set is ideal for storing undergarments. These silky mesh bags can be placed directly in the wash to keep smaller items separate from other clothing, and they're ideal for keeping luggage neat and organized.

The set includes one 24 x 24-inch black bag (perfect for dirty laundry), along with two 16 x 20-inch and two 12 x 15-inch white bags for storing and washing lingerie and other undergarments. These Bagail bags are also large enough to store regular clothes, with the bigger sizes capable of holding sweaters and even jackets. All the bags are color-safe and made of see-through material so you can easily find what you need in your suitcase.

Best Washable

Fu global garment bag breathable suit bag.

Comes with several bags

Washable fabric

Solid construction

Not ideal for extra-long items

For a traditional, lightweight garment bag at a bargain price, the FU Global Suit bag set is a good buy. The dust-proof set includes five classic black bags made from washable fabric and handy features such as a metal eye hook for hanging, a small transparent window, and sturdy zippers. Measuring 24 x 54 inches, the bags can hold longer jackets or dresses and be folded when not in use. The design of this set is more straightforward than some of the other options, but it gets the job done.

Dimensions: 54 x 24 inches | Material: 80-gram non-woven fabric‎ blend

What to Look for in a Travel Garment Bag

Are you looking for something to keep your dresses or suits from wrinkling, or are you more interested in a bag that will keep your dirty laundry away from your clean clothes? What about your shoes? From hanging garment bags that include shoe compartments to clear and mesh bags perfect for separating laundry, there are lots of designs to accommodate your specific travel needs.

Airline or Road Travel

Special considerations need to be made if you're planning on taking suits or dresses on a plane versus in a car. If you're flying, you'll want something lightweight but durable. While a bulky bag for everyday garment transit might be fine for road trips, you'll probably want to add a more flight-friendly one to your luggage collection if air travel is your norm.

Storage for Extras

Some bags keep it simple with just one main compartment, while others add many small pockets to the bag's exterior for jewelry and cufflinks. However, be careful with this, especially if you're flying—having delicate items close to the surface can lead to damage.

Calpak Compakt large garment bag

Several Condé Nast Traveler editors are big fans of Calpak luggage, and the large garment bag's thoughtful design illustrates why: It's made of water-resistant nylon and is collapsible thanks to its tri-fold design, making it easy to pack right in your suitcase. Take it from a bride herself— Traveler contributor Erika Owen recently got married in Iceland and swears by this one. She says of the bag: “The pockets were so handy and allowed me to keep all of my tiny wedding essentials (hair pins, deodorant, jewelry) safe."

Away garment bag

When we asked travel experts to share their favorite garment bag, the response we heard most often was Away's garment bag. Lexie Alford , the youngest recorded person to travel to every country , has definitely picked up plenty of packing tips on her travels. She likes this garment bag from Away specifically because of how it can be easily strapped to her carry-on luggage . “Checking garment bags can be a pain at the airport and if you have expensive pieces,” she says. “It's great for peace of mind to keep them with you during long travel days.”

Fashion writer and Traveler contributor Samantha Crompton Merinder was a bride herself this year and also recommends this one. She says it fits three full-length dresses and that the exterior pockets kept her jewelry and accessories organized during transit. “It makes getting dressed virtually stress free because your look is in one place upon arrival,” she says.

Tumi garment bag

I’ve personally used this garment bag to carry the bridesmaid dresses I wore to both of my sisters’ weddings. I wanted a lightweight bag that was easy to carry, long enough to fit a floor-length evening gown, and would keep my dresses protected in transit. This one checks all the boxes—it features a top carry handle, has a sturdy zip closure, and is long enough to fit a formal dress or men’s suit. Plus, this nylon garment cover is durable enough to reuse for weddings to come.

Travelpro Platinum Elite Carry-On Rolling Garment Bag

Lara Kramer , Traveler's global associate director of audience development, used this rolling garment carry-on for her honeymoon in Italy, Croatia, and Montenegro last summer. “I was able to pack a few nice dresses and my husband fit an entire suit, all of which remained wrinkle-free, which was a game changer,” she says. Kramer also loves that when you purchase this bag, it comes with a plan that covers the cost of repairs or damage from airlines for up to one year, including shipping costs.

The Laundress hanging storage bag

Fashion and lifestyle influencer Candace Molatore has spent the past few weeks traveling for weddings in Palm Springs, California and Portland, Oregon, so a well-made garment bag has been essential for her. “I'm a big fan of the Laundress brand and their garment bag is gorgeous and great,” she says. The Laundress garment bag features a full-length side zipper and a clear plastic sleeve that helps you easily identify which dresses are stored inside when it's hanging in your closet. It also has a three-inch gusset that helps expand the bag, allowing you to fit as much in there as possible.

Trifold extra long garment bag

When she's traveling with longer dresses, flight attendant Noelle Cors uses this trifold extra-long garment bag. “It includes important features such as adjustable straps for carrying on luggage, a variety of ways to fold the bag for stowing, a hook for hanging, and clips that keep your garments secure,” she says. The three hanger hoops allow you to store three to five dresses inside, and the hanging hoop is durable enough to support a full bag's contents on the back of a door. Other pros: It's affordable, available on Amazon, and is made to last for years.

Modoker convertible garment bag with shoulder strap

A duffel bag and garment bag all in one, this convertible bag from Amazon can be used for all sorts of trips. When you're not using it as a classic garment bag to keep dresses and suits wrinkle-free, it doubles as a regular, tear-resistant weekender bag with a side compartment to store shoes and adjustable shoulder strap that makes it easy to carry. LNA Clothing co-founder Lauren Alexander loves this one for special occasions. “This convertible garment bag can fit so much stuff and is super affordable,” she says. “I have yet to find a name brand that makes one as good as this.”

If you're a frequent business traveler, are planning a destination wedding, or just need to get a formal ensemble from point A to point B, a garment bag is a must. Though disheveled clothes with huge creases are sometimes inevitable byproducts of packing a suitcase, this clever carrier will help prevent wrinkles wherever you go.

Ironing takes up valuable time — which you might not have to spare with a packed itinerary — and not all hotels have steamers. Whether you're transporting a three-piece suit, a floor-length gown, or just an outfit you need to put on as soon as you deboard the plane, a garment bag is the solution. When browsing options, think about the size and length you need, if you want it to fold up, and what storage features you might use.

To help you find the right one for your needs, we tried 22 garment bags in our testing lab. After packing them up, we evaluated each one for ease of use, capacity, performance, quality, and overall value, and we will continue to test them in the real world for another six months as well.

Best Overall, Duffel

Mark & graham commuter 2-in-1 garment bag.

Mark & Graham

  • Ease of Use 5 /5
  • Quality 5 /5
  • Capacity 5 /5
  • Performance 5 /5

It has lots of organizational features and folds up compactly enough to qualify as a carry-on.

After three months of use, we noticed the zippers are prone to snagging.

The best duffel-style option we tested is the Commuter 2-in-1 Garment Bag from Mark & Graham. It unfolds to reveal a hanger for your garments, plus various pouches and pockets, including compartments for two pairs of shoes. We were impressed by how much fit inside — a men's suit, dress pants, a button-down shirt, two dresses, a belt, a pair of loafers, a pair of stiletto heels, a water bottle, and a smartphone. We appreciate the generous capacity and how easily the zippers close, even when it's packed full.

This lightweight garment bag is a piece of cake to carry, even when it's full of clothes and shoes. The twill-washed nylon exterior seems sturdy and resistant to tearing. It passed our water-resistance test with flying colors, too, so you can bet it'll protect your clothing from moisture damage.

When folded up into the duffel configuration, the Commuter Garment Bag is nice and compact. It also easily fits within the carry-on size restrictions for most airlines and we think the high-quality design is worth the investment.

Best Overall, Wheeled

Travelpro platinum elite 50-inch check-in rolling garment bag.

This high-end, smooth-rolling bag fits 15 hung items, plus multiple pairs of shoes and various accessories.

You may want to invest in shoe bags when packing those inside this case as there’s no designated separate section.

Our favorite wheeled option is the Travelpro Platinum Elite Rolling Garment Bag. This checked-size carrier effortlessly fit everything on our packing list and then some — two suits, dress pants, a button-down top, two dresses, a belt, a pair of loafers, dress shoes, stilettos, a laptop, a water bottle, and a lunch box. It fit roughly 15 items on the built-in hanger and secured them in place when we zipped everything up. There are also mesh compartments on the corners and various zippered pockets for stashing accessories and other small items, plus a TSA-approved lock if you plan on checking it.

The Platinum Elite Rolling Garment Bag was a breeze to roll around on carpet, hard floors, and concrete — and it's not too heavy to lift, even when packed full. After traveling to London using this garment bag, we found that it's even easy to roll alongside larger, checked luggage. It also passed our durability assessments, showing no signs of wear and tear after using it on a trip and dragging a stiletto heel across the exterior. At nearly $400, this garment bag is more expensive than most but the high-quality design, spacious capacity, and organizational features still stand out.

Best Waterproof

Seyfocnia convertible carry-on travel garment bag.

  • Capacity 4.8 /5

It has a water-repellent exterior and a spacious capacity with a shoe compartment and various pockets.

The faux leather exterior isn't scratch-resistant, and there's no designated laptop sleeve.

A waterproof carrier will help ensure your nice clothes don't get wet or wrinkled en route. We like this one, which has a faux leather exterior with a special fiber coating that repels liquids. This duffel-style garment bag has a generous capacity and closes easily, even when packed full. Besides multiple formal ensembles, we fit a pair of heels, a laptop, a water bottle, and a toiletry bag. We like that there are lots of useful pockets and a shoe compartment, but a designated laptop sleeve would be nice.

This bag is lightweight but doesn't feel cheap at all, and it's comfy to carry, thanks to the padded straps. You can also slide it over your suitcase handle with the trolley strap. The faux leather did sustain a scratch when we dragged a stiletto heel across the surface, though the material didn't rip. Considering the reliable, protective design and organizational features, the price range is more than reasonable, even for occasional use.

Price at time of publish: $49

The Details: 22 x 12.5 x 12 inches | 4.4 pounds | Fiber-coated faux leather | Waterproof

Best Attachable

Away the garment bag.

  • Performance 4 /5

This sophisticated garment bag is the perfect medium size, but it's still large enough to fit a floor-length dress, a suit, and two pairs of shoes.

The zippers can snag a little, so be careful when opening and closing them.

Away's take on the garment bag is this sophisticated briefcase-inspired number. We appreciated the sleek, straightforward design and found it to be a perfect medium size for most trips. When unfolded, it's long enough to fit a floor-length dress or a suit — with room to spare for multiple pairs of shoes and a light jacket. Just a heads up, the zippers can snag a little on the enclosed fabrics, so be careful when opening and closing the bag.

All in all, it feels like a high-quality, durable product. After three months of use, we love that the nylon exterior provides plenty of protection from dust and debris as well as some water resistance. With comfortable handles, a removable shoulder strap, and a trolley sleeve for slipping it over your suitcase handle, this versatile garment bag was made with plane travel in mind. You can bring it as a carry-on or a personal item, and it's definitely compact enough to fit underneath the seat in front of you. If you travel often for work or are looking to upgrade your current, cheaper garment bag, this one is definitely worth buying.

Price at time of publish: $195

The Details: 22.5 x 20.5 x 3.5 inches | 2.3 pounds | Nylon | Water-resistant

Best for Multiple Garments

Wallybags 60 inch deluxe travel garment bag.

  • Quality 4.5 /5
  • Performance 4.5 /5

This sizable bag can fit multiple long dresses, men's suits, overcoats, and costumes, and holds up to 30 pounds of weight.

A longer clamp would allow it to hold even more hangers.

Need something that can hold more than one thing? The WallyBags Deluxe Garment Bag is big enough for long dresses and gowns, suits, tuxedos, overcoats, dress shirts, costumes — you name it — and it can hold up to 30 pounds of weight. We were able to fit all items on our packing list (with room to spare) and secure everything together with the included hanger clamp. A longer clamp would allow you to fit additional hangers, but if you put multiple items on a single hanger, you can fit more inside.

The garment bag is made of polyester and features a water-resistant coating. It seems durable enough to withstand a journey by plane or car and didn't sustain any scratches during our stiletto test either, making this a solid value for the price point.

Price at time of publish: $60

The Details: 60 x 22 x 3 inches | 5 pounds | Polyester | Water-resistant

Best for Business

Zegur suit carry on garment bag.

It easily fits a suit, an overcoat, and two pairs of dress shoes, plus accessories, with room to spare.

The exterior material is somewhat rugged, reminiscent of a backpack or outdoor-friendly duffel.

If you go on frequent work trips and need a solution for transporting your suits and other business attire, we recommend the Zegur Suit Garment Bag. We could fit a suit jacket, dress pants, a button-down shirt, and two pairs of dress shoes inside with plenty of room to spare. There are also multiple pockets for stashing a belt, ties, cufflinks, and other accessories. After attaching your hung items, you can fold it up and carry it like a messenger bag or briefcase using the shoulder strap or grab handles, respectively.

Though it's designed like a briefcase, the material has a rugged quality, which is more reminiscent of a backpack or outdoor-friendly duffel. Still, the quality is very apparent — the zippers work great, and the exterior didn't scratch or scuff during our tests. This garment bag seems like it'll probably last forever, and the brand backs it with a five-year warranty. So the price is absolutely reasonable, if you ask us.

The Details: 23 x 22 x 4 inches | 2.9 pounds | 1800-D polyester | Waterproof

Most Durable

Degeler skyhanger velocity nylon garment bag.

  • Capacity 4.5 /5

This extremely resilient bag resists tearing and repels water while protecting the clothes inside, and the main compartment is easy to load up with hangers.

There's no designated shoe compartment, but the mesh pocket works for shoes.

Degeler's SkyHanger Garment Bag really stood out in terms of durability. The ripstop nylon exterior is lightweight yet extremely tough; it didn't tear or even scratch when we ran a stiletto heel across the surface. What's more, the water-resistant material didn't feel damp at all when we repeatedly sprayed it with water. This bag could probably get run over by a car without sustaining any damage — and any clothing inside would be protected too.

We like how the main compartment opens wide, making it easy to load with hangers. It effortlessly fits several items, and the upper button latch prevents the hangers from falling into the bag. While there's no designated shoe compartment, the interior mesh pocket works well for footwear. We also appreciate that this garment bag is compact enough to fit within a larger suitcase, or it can be used on its own as a carry-on or checked bag. Comfy leather handles are the final cherry on top.

Price at time of publish: $280

The Details: 21 x 21 x 1 inches | 1.1 pounds | Ripstop nylon | Water-repellent

Best for Weddings

Samsonite just right garment carrier.

  • Ease of Use 4 /5
  • Performance 4.8 /5

This well-made carrier fits multiple suits and gowns, then folds into a messenger bag for easy transport.

It can be hard to zip closed when packed full, and longer dresses might wrinkle on the bottom.

If you're heading to a wedding (or planning a destination wedding of your own), Samsonite's Just Right Garment Carrier might be your best bet. When unfolded, it's big enough to fit a suit or a gown and has handy loops for your hangers. We should note that, while you can use it for a floor-length dress, the bottom might wrinkle in transit, so think about whether you'll have access to an iron or steamer where you're headed. You could also fold your dress down at the waist to make it shorter in transit.

Though this bag is big enough to fit multiple items, bear in mind the zippers can be hard to close when it's packed full. Still, all the other pockets and exterior compartments were easily accessible and zipped closed without a fuss. Once full, it folds into thirds and becomes a messenger-style bag with a padded adjustable strap. There's also a trolley sleeve, so you can slide it over your suitcase handle. This certainly isn't the most affordable option we tried, but we can't deny the excellent quality and functionality.

Price at time of publish: $170

The Details: 22 x 16 x 2.5 inches | 3.4 pounds | Nylon

Best Organization

London fog buckingham 44-inch wheeled garment bag.

  • Quality 4 /5

This garment bag has a sizable main compartment and various pockets throughout for stashing accessories and carry-on essentials.

It's heavier than most garment bags and is somewhat bulky.

We also liked London Fog's Buckingham Garment Bag. The spacious design held three dresses, a pantsuit, a blazer, two shirts, a pair of shoes, a belt, a tie, a laptop, and a water bottle. Besides the main compartment, there are tons of pockets of various sizes both inside and out. In addition to clothes and accessories, you'll have plenty of room for things like books, snacks, or chargers. Needless to say, it makes a great carry-on.

This garment bag folds into itself and becomes a messenger bag but you may not want to tote it that way at 11 pounds when empty (heavier than most others we tried). But, although the shape is a bit bulky, the wheeled design is a breeze to roll around on carpets, hard floors, or the sidewalk. The Buckingham bag passed our durability test as well and shows no signs of wear and tear after three months of use. In the end, we think the features and overall quality reflect its price tag.

Price at time of publish: $200

The Details: 23 x 22 x 4 inches | 11 pounds | Nylon

Most Spacious

Modoker convertible garment bag.

  • Capacity 3 /5
  • Value 4.5 /5

This roomy bag has space for multiple garments, plus various accessories, toiletries, a laptop, and more.

It has more capacity as a duffel bag than as a garment bag.

The Modoker Convertible Garment Bag stood out for its spacious design. It has a large main compartment where you can hang a suit, dress, or jacket. Then when you fold it up into a duffel, it has ample storage and pockets for accessories, toiletries, a laptop, a water bottle, snacks, and chargers. There's even a shoe compartment for stashing heels or dress shoes.

Though you can hang multiple items, we should note it has a bigger capacity as a duffel bag than as a garment bag. Still, the roomy design and organizational features make it an excellent carry-on option. Made of jacquard polyester with a water-resistant coating, this garment bag seems durable enough to withstand any mode of transport while protecting your belongings from damage at the same time.

Price at time of publish: $55

The Details: 23 x 12 x 11 inches | 2.5 pounds | Jacquard polyester | Water-resistant

Most Compact

Calpak compakt small garment bag.

Small enough to be a personal item or slip into a wheeled carry-on, this compact carrier can fit multiple outfits, shoes, and accessories.

It's harder to close with bulky shoes in the shoe compartment, and it's too short for long dresses.

Need something smaller? Check out Calpak's Compakt Garment Bag. Despite the compact design, we were able to fit everything on our packing list, including a suit, dress pants, a shirt, a tie, a belt, and a pair of shoes. Though it's too short for longer gowns, you can also fit a couple of dresses. The shoe compartment was harder to close with larger men's shoes, but it worked well for women's flats. After three months of tests, this garment bag has become a permanent staple of closets for long-term protection of seasonal items.

When packed with items of various shapes, the bag was still easy to fold up — and you can tighten the straps to make it more compact (and even fit it inside a larger suitcase). This garment bag is small enough to qualify as a carry-on or personal item on a plane, or you could check it instead. Toting it around is no problem, either, thanks to the comfy, sturdy handles. Not only that, but the ripstop nylon exterior appears to resist tearing and water, so you can rest assured the contents will be protected in transit. We also like that this carrier comes in both neutrals and bright, punchy colors.

Best Budget

Misslo 43-inch gusseted travel garment bag.

  • Quality 3.5 /5
  • Capacity 4 /5

This no-nonsense garment bag fits multiple outfits and folds in half for easy carrying.

The cheap material isn't very durable, and it lacks organizational features.

On a budget? Go with the Misslo Gusseted Garment Bag. The straightforward design can be quickly packed up. We were able to fit two dresses, a shirt, pants, a suit jacket, and a belt, and the transparent window makes it easy to see what's inside. Beyond the main compartment and hanger slot, it doesn't have much in terms of organizational features. More pockets would be useful, but for under $15, we really can't complain.

It folds in half to be carried with the attached handles. Though the straps appear pretty sturdy, this bag is made of a non-woven fabric that may not stand the test of time. That said, if you need something for one trip and aren't too worried about durability, you won't be disappointed.

Other Garment Bags We Liked

Halfday The Garment Duffel : This bag was easy enough to pack, though the hanger loop doesn't fit as many hangers as others we tried. Still, we liked the structured design of the duffel and found it comfortable to carry using the handles and shoulder strap.

Away The Centerfold Garment Sleeve : Available in three sizes, this garment bag is lightweight without sacrificing durability. We wish it had more pockets and organizational features but were all-around impressed with the design.

Travel Select Amsterdam Business Rolling Garment Bag : This garment bag has a huge capacity, with space for several hung items and multiple pairs of shoes. However, the upper hook only has room for four hangers, so you might need to put multiple pieces on a single hanger.

The Travel + Leisure team researched today's best garment bags and selected 22 to try firsthand in our testing lab and in real-life settings over a six-month period. After inspecting each bag and examining the features, we packed them with various clothing items (suits, dresses, coats, etc.), plus shoes and accessories if there was room.

Once closed, we carried them around, lifted them overhead, and rolled the ones with wheels. We also assessed whether they worked best as carry-ons, personal items, or checked baggage. Additionally, we ran a stiletto heel over the exteriors to check for scratch and puncture resistance, then sprayed the bags with water to see if they repelled moisture. Each garment bag earned a score for ease of use, capacity, quality, performance, and value, and those with the highest scores made it onto our list.

Tips for Buying Garment Bags

Pay attention to length.

When buying a garment bag, pay attention to the unfolded length. This will tell you what types of items you can hang inside, like suits, dresses, and coats. Some are too short for longer dresses, in which case you can try folding the dress at the waist. Otherwise, have a plan to iron or steam items upon arrival.

Think about foldability

Many garment bags are meant to fold up and be carried around as a duffel or messenger-style bag. Keep this in mind, as folding can crease the items inside. Folding will also double or triple the thickness of the bag, which might make it harder to zip when packed with several articles of clothing.

Consider storage features

In addition to a main compartment with a hook for hangers, garment bags often have other storage features. This might include zippered pockets, a designated shoe compartment, a mesh pouch, a laptop sleeve, or a water bottle holder. These aren't absolutely necessary, but they can certainly come in handy if you use your garment bag as a carry-on.

Look for easy-carrying options

Lastly, look for a garment bag that's easy to get from point A to point B. For instance, some fold up into a duffel or messenger bag with grab handles or a detachable shoulder strap. Others have trolley sleeves meant to slide over a suitcase handle to consolidate your luggage. And some garment carriers are wheeled, so you can roll them around with minimal elbow grease.

Place your clothing items on hangers, then attach them to the upper hook or loop. Some garment bags are spacious but can't fit as many hangers, in which case you might want to put multiple items on one hanger. For extra protection from potential damage, cover each piece with a dry-cleaning bag. If there's a shoe compartment or other pockets, fill those after hanging your garments in the main compartment.

Bifold garment bags fold in half, and trifold garment bags fold into thirds. Aside from the number of potential creases in your clothes, there isn't much difference between the two. What matters more is the size and shape of the folded bag and whether it has straps, handles, or other features for carrying it around.

In most cases, a garment bag can count as a carry-on . The size limit is usually roughly 22 x 14 x 9 inches — if it's small enough, it can even qualify as a personal item. Some airlines allow you to hang your garment bag when you board in a designated closet located in the front of the plane. That said, all airlines are different, so be sure to check the specific rules and requirements ahead of time.
