The country’s rugged beauty and varied landscapes means it’s always a good time to go backpacking in New Zealand! The summer months (December to March) bring long, sunny days perfect for spending outdoors, the winter months (June to September) bring snow to the South Island and parts of the North, and the shoulder seasons bring milder weather and fewer visitors.
You'll be surprised with how affordable tours in NZ can be! From 9 to 17 days, our Intro and Adventure tour options include all transport, stunning accomodation, some meals, an epic tour guide and an awesome group of new friends to travel with. Simply scroll down for our pricing, and secure a space on our trips from $400/ £200/ €200
From years of experience operating in this beautiful country, we know 9 - 17 days is the most optimal amount of time to spend in NZ. This gives you enough time to see the best of either the South or North Island (9 days) or both Islands across 17 days!
If you’re planning a short visit and are from Australia, the UK, Canada, USA, or any of the countries on this list , you do not need a visa to enter but do require an NZ ETA (New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority) which can be requested online. Most people who do NZ Intro need a Working Holiday Visa. A WHV is usually available to those aged 18 - 30 and valid for 12 or 23 months.
If you are doing an INTRO Travel group tour in NZ, all of your accommodation and transport are included, plus some meals and an epic tour guide. A traveler staying long-term for work should be arriving with $4000 NZD to support yourself until you begin work.
While a week can be enough time to experience some of the North or South islands, we usually recommend you stay a little longer, so you can properly enjoy all of the incredible things this country has to offer without missing anything. By joining one of our group tours we’ll fit as much into the time you have available as possible, with all the best bucket list inclusions sorted for you!
A group tour that includes a balance of both the North & South Islands is the best way to see NZ! Having all of your accommodation, transport, activities and some meals already organised for you means you can fully enjoy the destination without any added stresses.

New Zealand Tour Reviews 2023/2024
"My New Zealand tour was memorable because of Isobel, the tour guide. I did not know what to expect on my Contiki tour but as it turned out, Isobel made it wonderful."
"The New Zealand experience was fascinating. There isin't anything not to like about New Zealand, it is an awesome country with beautiful sceneries, the people were amazing and the food and drinks were superb. Our tour guide (Isobel) did a fantastic job as she knew all the best places, encouraged us to do something bit different or scary (like a bungy jump) and her good taste in music kept us going in the mornings if we were feeling a bit worse for wear after a night out. I highly recommend this New Zealand tour."
"This New Zealand tour was amazing. I made some good friends during the travel and what made the tour enjoyable was the tour guide (Isobel), she was very informative and helpful as well as hilarious and fun to be around. I highly recommend this New Zealand tour to family and friends and will definitely do another one."

South Island Adventure (12 Days)

The South Island IS the adventure isle of the world with rolling green pastures, sandy beaches, the towering Southern Alps mountain range, mirror blue lakes, glaciers, fjords, and so much more! The famed Queenstown has even been coined the "Adrenaline Capital of the World".
Christchurch → Kaikoura → Nelson/Abel Tasman National Park (4 Nights)

- Explore the earthquake ridden city of Christchurch , still beautiful with parks and interesting street art as major rebuilding is taking place (cool photos to be taken all around).

- Stop at Ohau Point to encounter juvenile seal pups near a magnificent waterfall!
- Explore Abel Tasman National Park: A boat trip with a beach landing takes us to this coastal wonderland where we can relax on the white sand or hike along a coastal track through lush forest and swing bridges. (Optional kayak tours and other guided hikes available). So many opportunities for stunning photos throughout this day.
Northern Greymouth & Franz Josef Glacier (2 Nights)

- Guided walk through the Truman Track in Paparoa National Park: Unspoilt sub-tropical forest, podocarp and rata trees, vines, and nikau palms everywhere.
- Greymouth: Considered the heart of the west coast, the town is famous for its rich history of jade hunting, gold mining, and dramatic river floods.
- Franz Josef Glacier: See and photograph this unique glacier, one of only a few in the world that descends into a temperate rain forest. Our guided walking tour gets us as close as possible to the terminal face of the glacier but don't miss the optional helicopter hikes or scenic heli rides with glacier landings. End the day relaxing in soothing hot pools fed by natural springs nearby ( optional ).
Queenstown & Milford Sound (3 Nights)

- Chinese Mining Village of Arrowtown: A small community rich in history for its gold mining glory days. Many original shacks and structures from the NZ gold rush era still stand today.
- Explore Queenstown: Several optional adventures are available including bungy jumping, sky diving, Skyline Gondola, horseback riding, wine tours, ATV tours, and more!
- TSS Earnslaw historic steamship ride to Walter Peak Farm for a kiwi style gourmet BBQ dinner and farm show.
- Mind-Blowing Milford Sound Exploration & Cruise: This is a place that potentially tops all others in New Zealand ( and that's saying a lot! ). So magical in fact, that famed British writer Rudyard Kipling deemed Milford Sound an 8th Wonder of the World. Numerous waterfalls decorate the walls of the cliffs and shower down into the sea. Explore & photograph the gigantic fjords, and if we're lucky, see fur seals, dusky & bottlenose dolphins, & the rare Fiordland Crested Penguin!
Lake Tekapo → Christchurch (2 Nights)

- Mt. John Observatory Astronomy Tour ( Optional ): Super clear skies make Lake Tekapo the best place for star & planet gazing
- Tekapo Hot Springs ( Optional ): Relax our muscles under the stars in the local hot pools.
- Visit Mt Cook Village: Photo ops of New Zealand's tallest mountain and Lake Pukaki with its gorgeous turquoise glacier water.
Price: $3595.00
Single Supplement: $1049.00

North Island Adventure
Optional Extension

For the complete New Zealand experience come with us to the North Island, with vastly different landscapes, rich in geothermal activity and home to iconic volcanoes such as Mt Tongariro and Mt Ngauruhoe (filmed in "Lord of the Rings" as Mt. Doom). We'll explore stunning black sand beaches backed by towering cliffs & the largest volcanic cone in Auckland. Experience & photograph fascinating geothermal activity in Rotorua and become immersed in Māori culture. In just one week, we'll see & photograph a completely different island compared to the south. It might as well be on the other side of the world!
Whether you're joining us on our epic New Zealand South Island journey or not, this adventure is not to be missed! All are welcome to join this extension option! ( Ask about a reduced rate since no domestic flight needed )
Auckland → West Coast → Rangitoto Island: 2 Nights

- Auckland War Memorial Museum: Our visit here is a great way to discover the country's history and culture including a memorial to those who sacrificed their lives in wartime. It has pre-eminent Māori and Pacific collections ( our favorite part!) , significant natural history resources, and major social and military history collections, as well as decorative arts and pictorial collections.
- Muriwai's Black Sand Beaches & the Gannet Colony: This small community on the west coast has an impressive shoreline with cliff-top trails leading to a huge gannet colony! Easy access and viewing platforms let us get up close without disturbing the birds to capture amazing images! The trail and colony overlook a huge, volcanic, black sand beach that runs along most of the town's coastline.

- Volcanic Exploration: Journey through rugged lava crop on board a 4WD road-train, while learning all about the 600-year-old volcano’s fiery past. We'll arrive at the base of the summit, and from here it’s just a short climb to the very top for epic views & photographs.
Waitomo → Rotorua (2 Nights)

- Wai O Tapu: Here we'll feel the "pulse of the earth", famous for boiling mud pools, exploding geysers, and vibrant colored sulfur pools (yes this place is stinky but so worth it for the photography alone!).
- “Te Puia”: More colorful travertine terraces to photograph here but the highlight will be the Maori cultural experience with an authentic Hangi, or earth oven, feast with dancing and music that's still a rich part of the Maori tradition today. (Like a New Zealand Luau, except better!)
Taupo → Tongariro National Park → Auckland 2 Nights

* Free time to relax and enjoy the sand & sun!
* Optional Marble Mountains Adventure (Awesome photo ops of unique rock structures with pagodas carved right into the mountain itself!)

2024-2025 BROCHURE
- New Zealand small group touring with MoaTrek
- About our New Zealand Tours
On a MoaTrek small group New Zealand tour you will experience our country with a friendly group of like-minded people which means a vacation that is relaxed and full of laughs. You’ll be part of a group of 18 or less – the perfect number for getting off the beaten track.
Your MoaTrek Kiwi Guide will show you the real New Zealand and along the way, you’ll make new friends and enjoy the company of people from all over the world on our purpose built coaches.
Thinking of a small group tour?
Considering a guided tour for your New Zealand vacation? There's so much to love about small group travel. Read on to discover whether a small group tour is the right style of travel for you.
Get off the beaten track
Travelling in a smaller group means you’ll enjoy more off the beaten track experiences.
From the secluded sand dunes of the Hokianga Harbour in Northland to sailing to secluded hot pools on Lake Rotoiti or enjoying a private homestead lunch with local Kiwi hosts in the Canterbury countryside, having less people on tour opens the doors to the real New Zealand.
Small groups are able to visit places that big tour groups simply can’t and it’s always these experiences that become the most unforgettable highlights of your time in New Zealand.
Find out more about the amazing places we visit on our tours.

Personal attention from the your MoaTrek Kiwi Guide
On one of our small group tours, one of the most important pieces of the puzzle is your guide. An experienced and friendly guide with exceptional attention to detail will make your New Zealand tour unforgettable.
All of our MoaTrek Kiwi Guides are highly knowledgeable, know our country so well and are passionate about sharing it with visitors.
They're "quintessential Kiwis" with a great sense of humour and whether you're interested in our colourful culture, history, flora or fauna our MoaTrek expert Kiwi Guides will bring New Zealand to life.
Meet the MoaTrek Kiwi Guide team here.

Meet the locals
When we ask guests what they love most of all about our tours, they always say the same thing. It's meeting the amazing people out on the road such as locals we visit for special lunches or activities, and of course our Kiwi Guides.
You'll love meeting our mates like Pete in the Hokianga, sailing on Lake Rotoiti with Matt and his team, sharing family stories with Karen and Tracey in Lake Tarawera and a hosted country lunch in Canterbury with Ian and Diana.
These are the moments you'll feel like you're experiencing the real New Zealand.

Enjoy great company and lots of laughs
Touring New Zealand with a small group of like-minded people from all over the world makes for plenty of good times and new friendships.
When you’re travelling in a group of 18 or less, you’re bound to meet people with whom you have lots in common, and yet still find it possible to mix and mingle with everybody during meal times.
Activities like walking at Aoraki Mt Cook, wine tasting in Marlborough and cruising on Milford Sound are so much more fun and memorable when you're sharing the moment with new friends.
See all the fun we have on tour in our trip gallery here.

A flexible schedule
On large-group coach tours, itineraries are often confined to a tight and rigid schedule, leaving no opportunities for flexibility or surprises.
Enjoying your time soaking in your very own hot pool at Lake Rotoiti? Let’s stay a little while longer! Are there plenty of cheeky Kea parrots on our way through Arthur’s Pass National Park? Take your time with photographs to ensure you get the perfect shot.
With a small group, we don’t like to hurry – after all, you are on vacation.

Purpose built coaches for small group touring
To enhance the flexibility of travelling in a small group, we own and operate quality coaches that have been purpose-built for our requirements.
Reclining seats, spacious legroom and large picture windows have been designed with your comfort and enjoyment in mind. All coaches have full standing headroom, climate control and a luggage compartment, as well as pure wool carpet.
Being in a smaller coach means visiting places that are a little out of the way is nice and easy.

Small group travel - the best way to discover New Zealand
We think travelling New Zealand in a small group is the best way to see our wonderful country, so much so in fact that we've been doing this since 1971!
Small group touring reminds us of how we used to travel on family holidays as kids, to all the same places we show our guests each year at MoaTrek. Keen to find out more? See all our New Zealand small group tours here or get in touch now. Cheers!

Depart Christchurch at 6am and pick up your hire gear (and breakfast) on the 2 hour drive inland to Mt Hutt. Located high in the Southern Alps, Canterbury’s Mt Hutt Ski Area receives some of the lightest and driest powder in Australasia. A big mountain with 365 skiable hectares and great terrain, this ski field is an awesome winter experience for first timers and seasoned powder hounds alike. Collect your included lift pass and choose your own adventure, from adrenalin-pumping black diamond runs to wide, open trails that provide easy learning for novice skiers or a chance to brush up on existing skills. To help beginners get into the swing of things perhaps opt for a morning & afternoon beginner ski/boarding lesson. And if you need more we're happy to arrange that too.
After a day on the slopes, continue south (approximately 2.5 hours) to our accommodation on the shores of beautiful Lake Tekapo, your home for the night. Chill out at a local café or wander the southern shores of this stunning turquoise lake and soak in the magnificent views of the nearby snow-covered mountains. As part of the world's largest International Dark Sky Reserve it's worth staying up late to experience the finest night sky you may ever experience.
- Day lift pass - Mt Hutt
- Mt Hutt Morning & Afternoon Beginner Ski/Boarding Lesson - NZD115
Today's total driving time is approximately 4.5 hours.
Start the day with an early morning drive (approximately 1.5hrs) to nearby Ohau, a remote ski field that can be found midway between Christchurch and Queenstown. While the drive is stunning - take in views of the aquamarine Lake Pukaki and beautiful Mackenzie Basin - the ski fields of Ohau are the true highlight. Ohau also offers exquisite dry powder snow and epic terrain – and will get you away from the tourist trail to experience an awesome range of ski fields for all abilities. Your group leader will be happy to explain your choices in this epic snow destination. After a full day on the snow, drive approximately 2 hours to Wanaka, New Zealand’s ‘ultimate hub for outdoor adventures’, your home for the next 2 nights.
- Day lift pass - Ohau
Start the day early with a short drive to Treble Cone in the heart of the Southern Alps, home to the highest lift-accessed terrain, longest groomed intermediate runs, and highest vertical drop on the South Island. This is also the South Island’s largest ski area with plenty of varied terrain, amazing views across Wanaka and trails to suit all ages and abilities. For those newer to snow sports there is a purpose-built learner area and long, groomed beginner and intermediate trails. More experienced skiers and boarders are drawn to the natural half pipes, challenging advanced runs and ungroomed powder. Renowned for its reliable snow conditions and weather, and Home Basin Express chairlift so you can enjoy more runs per day, Treble Cone really is skiing and boarding heaven. After a day on the slopes, you’ll head back to Wanaka. With a huge number of places to dine, drink and dance the night away, your choices on this free evening are endless.
- Day lift pass - Treble Cone
Leave Wanaka behind and drive south towards Queenstown, but not without stopping for a full day at Cardrona Alpine Resort, renowned among skiers and boarders for inspiring terrain and dry natural snow. Blessed with ‘New Zealand’s most reliable snow’, it's one of the top mountains in the country. With 345 hectares of wide, undulating trails, open slopes, steep chutes and awesome terrain parks, your group leader will be happy to recommend runs to best suit your ability. A wide area of the mountain is serviced by chair lifts, so access is easy and Cardrona’s three basins offer wide-open spaces and a mixture of terrains that are suitable for snowboarders and skiers of all abilities. On-mountain facilities include five cafes, so there’s plenty of opportunity to relax between your epic runs. After a full day on the slopes enjoy a relaxing drive (approximately 1 hr) all the way to Queenstown – the ‘home of winter’.
- Day lift pass - Cardrona
After four days on the slopes, it’s time to rest your legs and experience everything Queenstown has to offer. From a relaxing cruise on Lake Whakatipu, Lord of the Rings tour, or winery visit at nearby Gibbston, to a leisurely bike ride along the (mostly flat) Queenstown Trail or adrenaline-pumping jetboat rides, white water rafting or even bungee jumping, there is sure to be an adventure to suit. If you can't bear to be away from the snow for a day, there are a number of carbon-neutral heli-ski options that will take you to untouched powder in the area. Whatever you choose to experience, try and save some energy for the next two days – you’re going to need it!

Coronet Peak is the oldest and most developed ski area in the South Island, with an astounding variety of runs and on-field facilities that are some of the finest in the region. Everything is designed to ensure you make the most of skiing and boarding, whatever your level of ability. Everyone can ski like a pro at Coronet Peak – there are dedicated slopes for first-timers, wide groomed trails and plenty of choice for more experienced skiers. Your group leader will help show you the best option for your abilities. Once you know the ropes, you can zoom down the slopes and enjoy gently rolling terrain with plenty of dips and drops for great variety. For boarders, Coronet Peak is a natural terrain park, full of endless hits and powder stashes. After your final run, it’s time to enjoy Queenstown’s excellent bars, restaurants and cafes beside the lake then kick on into the night, or head back to the hostel for a well-earned sleep.
- Day lift pass - Coronet Peak
Today's total driving time is approximately 1 hour.
Picture wide open trails, powder snow, spectacular views, sun-drenched terrain and unforgettable runs and you’ve got The Remarkables. Set in a vast natural amphitheatre high in the rugged ranges, this is the highest ski field in Queenstown at 1943m. Being so far up is a major plus, giving the ski field a long, reliable season – and the north facing aspect makes it a natural sun-trap. While there are plenty of options for beginners, The Remarkables ski area also boasts a new international standard Super Pipe. At 150m long and 22m wide it’s for advanced level riders and skiers only, and an absolute blast if you have the skills. The expanded Xbox Terrain and Rail Park and other features, combined with the big mountain possibilities, make The Remarkables a top choice for freeriders. At the end of an exciting day on the slopes, it’s time to head back down to Queenstown, where your epic snow adventure finishes on arrival around 8pm.
- Day lift pass - The Remarkables
No accommodation is included in Queenstown today so you will need to pack up and check out before you leave to the ski fields. Should you require additional accommodation, please speak with your agent.

New Zealand announce strong squad for Bangladesh Test series, Mitchell Santner returns after 2 years
“With Ajaz, Ish, Mitch, Glenn and Rachin, we have a strong spin group that will offer good variety and options during the series. Mitch had a strong back half of the Plunket Shield campaign last summer and has made good strides in his red-ball bowling," NZC selector Sam Wells said.

The star spin all-rounder Mitchell Santner has returned to the red-ball team after a gap of two years and joins the heavy spin attack of Ajaz Patel, Ish Sodhi , Rachin Ravindra, and Glenn Phillips.
Santner has been the team's best bowler in the ongoing ODI World Cup 2023 with 14 wickets in eight innings. Bangladesh pitches are custom to support spin and the management is looking to count on Santner's experience in sub-continent conditions.
“We’ve selected a squad we think can compete and succeed in Bangladesh,” BLACKCAPS selector Sam Wells said. "With Ajaz, Ish, Mitch, Glenn and Rachin, we have a strong spin group that will offer good variety and options during the series. Mitch had a strong back half of the Plunket Shield campaign last summer and has made good strides in his red-ball bowling. He brings a wealth of experience in sub-continent conditions and adds depth to the batting line-up as a genuine allrounder."
Glenn Phillips also returns to Test cricket having missed the team's last assignment against Sri Lanka at home in March and April 2023. Michael Bracewell (injured), Doug Bracewell, Blair Tickner, Neil Wagner and Scott Kuggeleijn are five players excluded from the previous Test squad.

Bangladesh host the Kiwis in two Tests, two ODIs and a three-match T20I series at home. New Zealand head coach Gary Stead will not be part of his tour as he is set to travel home to prepare for the summer series. Luke Ronchi will be leading the team for this tour with Jacob Oram, Saqlain Mushtaq and Daniel Flynn as part of the support staff.
New Zealand Test Squad: Tim Southee (c), Kane Williamson, Tom Blundell (wk), Devon Conway, Matt Henry, Kyle Jamieson, Tom Latham (wk), Daryl Mitchell, Henry Nicholls , Ajaz Patel, Glenn Phillips, Rachin Ravindra, Mitchell Santner, Ish Sodhi, Will Young
