I personally found it much easier to have my agency set up my housing for me. This way I knew it was safe, furnished, close to where I was working, and paid for. If there were any problems, all I had to do was call my company and it would be handled.

- Your housing stipend depends on the city you live in, but oftentimes, it is more than the rent you end up paying. This is a good way to make some extra tax-free cash.

There are pros and cons to using your a travel nurse agency’s contracted housing vs. finding your own housing. It just depends on how much time and effort you can put into the search and if you’re hoping to pocket any extra housing stipend cash.
Benefits for Travel Nurses:
- The majority of travel nurse companies offer health and dental insurance.
- Now that the Affordable Care Act is in place, it might be wise to research whether or not it would be more cost-effective for you to go with your agency’s healthcare plan or purchase one of your own through healthcare.org. The benefit of going through healthcare.org is that if you do plan on switching travel nurse agencies, you won’t have to change your insurance.
- Some smaller travel nurse companies will give you a healthcare stipend if you don’t take their health insurance so you can purchase your own.
- As far as retirement plans go, I decided to open up my own Roth IRA and not contribute to the 401K because I didn’t know how long I was going to be traveling. With some companies you can contribute to your 401K from day 1 and with others you have to wait as long as 1 year.
Travel Nurse Reimbursements
When talking with your potential travel nurse agency, make sure you ask them what the reimbursement is for travel. “Travel” cost is considered the amount of money it takes you to get from your “tax home” to your travel assignment or from one assignment to the next. Often times this can be negotiated if there is a high need in one state that happens to be across the country.
I have found that the average reimbursement is $500.
They will pay you half on your first paycheck and the other half when you complete your assignment. You have the option of either driving or flying to your next destination. I personally drove to each of my assignments; I couldn’t imagine trying to fit all my belongings into suitcases and I love road trips.
Important Pay and Benefits Questions to Ask
Not all benefits or pay packages are created equal. It is important to find an agency that offers benefits, housing, and pay packages that are specific to your needs.
1. What destinations does your agency serve?
The whole point of travel nursing is to travel…right? So it is important to find a company that serves the city or cities you want to travel to. Some agencies claim they have contracts nationwide, however, that may not be the case.
If you know of a specific hospital that you would like to travel to because it looks good on your resume or a specific city you want to explore, then make sure your potential agency has a contract at that location. This is especially important if you want to travel to places such as Hawaii and Alaska.

2. How are your pay packages broken down?
Does the company tend to pay a higher base rate with lower non-taxable reimbursements or a lower base rate with higher non-taxable reimbursements?
Having a higher base rate may serve you better if you plan on taking company housing, plan on buying a house, or getting a loan in the near future. If you are someone who likes to find their own housing, then a higher housing stipend may be the way to go with a lower base rate.
3. What types of housing do you provide?
Most agencies offer a one-bedroom furnished apartment for your typical 13-week contract. This typically does not include dishes, linen, a washer and dryer, a T.V., or even a vacuum. If you don’t like lugging your belongings around with you all over the country or paying out of pocket to rent this stuff, then it may be wise to either ask if the agency provides any of these necessities at no cost or find your own housing.
If your contract is only eight weeks, then you could get stuck in an extended-stay hotel. I personally like to have nice housing, so I wanted a company that focused on providing comfortable and safe housing options. If you like to find your own housing then this may not apply to you.
4. What type of benefits do you offer?
Most agencies offer medical/dental benefits and a retirement package. If these benefits are important to you, then finding a company with good benefits is essential.
If you like to live on the edge with no health benefits and you brush and floss your teeth like a champ, then maybe you don’t care about benefits. If this is the case then you can ask the company if they are willing to pay you a higher base rate for not taking their benefits.
As far as retirement packages go, I found it easier to do my own Roth IRA on the side. This way, if I switched companies I didn’t have to worry about moving my money all over the place.

5. What types of extra work-related costs do you reimburse for?
Travel nurse companies can reimburse you for the following:
- Licensing fees
- CEU (Continuing Education) requirements
- Required immunizations
Some travel nurse agencies have a CEU database that is free for their employees. This helps cut costs in those states that require a certain number to maintain or acquire a new license.
These extra costs add up over time so it’s nice to know your agency is looking out for your pocketbook.
6. What are your missed and canceled shift policies?
A missed shift means you called in sick, and a canceled shift means they canceled you for low census. For the most part, the hospital determines how the travel nurse agency handles this, and it will be written in your contract.
This is important because in the travel nurse world if you don’t work, you don’t get paid. And in some cases, you may have to reimburse your agency for housing costs.
There may be a clause written in your contract that allows you to “miss” a certain amount of shifts without being penalized. There will also be a clause that states how many shifts the hospital can cancel you. Usually, it’s once a pay period, and your agency shouldn’t require you to reimburse them for housing costs.
There are even some agencies that offer 100% guaranteed shifts meaning no matter what you will not get canceled.

Last year, we found several websites that engaged in “review seeding”. When a website launches a new review feature, they will naturally have no reviews. “Review seeding” is when they add a ton of fake reviews to get the ball rolling.
The idea is that visitors are more likely to leave reviews if the site already has reviews. Unfortunately, you can’t trust fake reviews!
This year, we found that a bunch of click-bait “content farm” websites had published articles on “the best travel nursing companies.” These are websites that publish massive numbers of articles on a wide range of topics with one goal in mind, to generate traffic by ranking high on Google’s search results.
These websites often hire inexpensive overseas writers with no knowledge of the topics that the website tells them to write about. Why is this a problem?
Well, we found one article that listed companies that haven’t existed in over 3 years. We found another article that listed several companies that have absolutely horrible reviews. And we found several articles that had flat out copied the work of others. In fact, we successfully filed two DMCA takedown requests against websites that had copied our work.
The saddest thing about this is that Google falls for it. As a result, these articles often sit atop Google’s search results.
We urge you to seek out reputable resources to ensure that you aren’t being led astray.
Our Process for Determining the Best Travel Nursing Companies for 2021
This is why we compile review scores for every company we can find on 6 reputable review websites. We enter the scores into a spreadsheet. We’ve done this annually since 2017. Here are the review sources we used this year:

- Travel Nursing Central
The spreadsheet calculates the aggregate average score for each company. Then, we compare the scores for the current year to the scores for the previous year. We award bonuses for score increases and penalties for score decreases.
This way, we recognize great companies that had a great year. We strongly encourage you to review our lists from prior years. Nearly every company on those lists continues to have amazing scores.
Our scoring system is much more complex than we’ve described here. We like to be as transparent as possible. Therefore, we provide a highly detailed scoring example at the end of the article.
2021 Insights from Travel Nursing Company Reviews and Ratings
This year, we collected all the scores between May 23 and May 29, 2021. Each year, we like to share interesting stats and tidbits of information we recognized while compiling the numbers. Here are some from this year:
- Our 2019 article on the “Best Travel Nursing Companies” has been viewed more than 131,000 times! It’s our 10h most viewed article of all time.
- Our 2020 “Best Travel Nursing Companies” article has been viewed more than 68,000 times.
- We aggregated 91.240 reviews for 356 travel nursing companies this year! That’s an increase of 11,569 reviews and 32 companies from 2020.
- The aggregate average score for all agencies was 79.12 in 2021. That’s up from 78.19 in 2020. That’s amazing given that the period we measured includes the peak of the pandemic’s challenges. Moreover, healthcare staffing agencies continue to outshine employers in other industries.
We tallied 3,122 total reviews on Highway Hypodermics this year . The aggregate average score for all companies on HH was 17.70. That’s an increase from 17.54 the year before.
That’s equivalent to an average score of 88.5 out of 100! This indicates that healthcare staffing agencies are providing travel nurses with excellent service.
We counted 11,173 scores on Travel Nursing Central for 2021. That’s an increase of 806 reviews from last year.
The aggregate average review score on TNC was 86.04 out of 100. That’s an increase of .65 points. Again, this indicates that travel nursing companies performed exceptionally well in 2021.
We counted 6,616 total reviews on Facebook this year. That’s a decrease of 723 from the previous year. That’s not a typo. The number of reviews on Facebook decreased last year as well.
Use the original Universal Job Application and Credential Management for travelers.
This year, we had to manually count scores for several agencies. That’s because Facebook was showing that some companies had no reviews even though Facebook displayed the reviews right next to the count.
We also saw some companies with a negative number of reviews. How is that even possible? Facebook’s review tracking is so bad that we’re certain it had an impact our rankings this year. We chose to press ahead and count the reviews.
Facebook is a mess. We wouldn’t even use them if weren’t for the fact that the travel nursing industry is highly active on Facebook.
We counted 20,250 reviews on Indeed this year. That means employees added 2,292 new reviews for healthcare staffing agencies this year.
The aggregate average score for all companies on Indeed was 3.75 out of 5 this year. That’s equivalent to 75 on a 100-point scale. That’s unchanged from last year.
The total number of reviews on GlassDoor was 20,756 this year. That’s an increase of 4,704 reviews from the previous year.
The aggregate average score for all travel nursing companies was 3.81 this year. That’s in increase from 3.66 the previous year. Moreover, it’s much higher than the average company rating on GlassDoor which is 3.3 .
We counted 6,926 reviews on Google this year. That’s an increase of 2,239 reviews from the previous year.
The aggregate average score for all travel nursing companies was 4.46 on Google this year. That’s an increase from 4.42 the previous year. It’s equivalent to 89.2 on a 100-point scale.
Why You Should Consider All 20 Companies
As we do every year, we included 20 companies on our list of the best travel nursing agencies of 2021. Many people think the list is too long. We actually think it’s too small and here’s why.
First, every company on this list has amazing review scores. As I mentioned above, every one of them has review scores high enough to be in GlassDoor’s annual list of the best companies to work for.
Second, travel healthcare professionals MUST work with multiple companies in order to gain maximum exposure to the job market. That’s because different companies work with different hospitals. No single company has access to every job.

TotalMed had an exceptionally strong year in reviews. Their scores increased year-over-year on 4 of the six review sources we measure. Their average aggregate score increased from 86.18 to 88.82. These increases resulted in over 10 bonus points under our scoring system which catapulted them to number 2 on our list. The fact that TotalMed was able to accomplish this during the pandemic, with all its challenges, is extra impressive.
TotalMed is no stranger to annual lists of the best travel nursing companies. Travel Nursing Central listed TotalMed as one of the top companies every year from 2015 to 2020. They made it on Highway Hypodermics’ list in 2014-2017 and 2021.
TotalMed was founded in 2005. They staff Nursing and Allied professionals nationwide. They have access to a high volume of jobs via direct relationships, VMS contracts and by virtue of their own MSP service.
3. Triage Staffing
Triage Staffing has been in the top 5 on our annual list every year since 2017. No other company can say that.
Triage comes in at number 3 this year with an aggregate average score of 96.49. That is up from 95.83 last year. That’s amazing given that Triage has over 1,200 total reviews!
This past year, Triage acquired another highly reputable healthcare staffing company, Talemed. This makes Triage one of the largest healthcare staffing companies in the nation. That’s a great thing for travel healthcare professionals because it means Triage has access to high volume of jobs and also provides exceptional service that is well documented in their reviews.

4. Stability Healthcare
Stability Healthcare comes in at number 4 on our list of the best travel nursing agencies with an aggregate average score of 94.96 on 102 total reviews. They received 62 new reviews in the last year.
Stability Healthcare is an industry trailblazer. They were among the first, if not the first, to build web-based software that we could truly refer to as “recruiterless travel nursing”.
However, don’t let the term “recruiterles” fool you. Stability Healthcare does provide human support. And, according to Stability’s reviews, that support is world-class.
Instead, Stability’s software provides healthcare professionals with detailed job information, including pay. It also provides a user-friendly profile builder and credentialing features. Essentially, the software provides nearly everything healthcare professionals need to submit themselves for a job.

Axis Medical Staffing has been on our list of the best travel nursing agencies every year since 2017. They ranked number 2 on our list last year. They routinely make the lists of both Highway Hypodermics and Travel Nursing Central. Axis is on all three lists for 2021!
Axis’s aggregate average score this year is 95.63. That’s an increase from last year’s 94.97. Axis’s scores increased on TNC and Google during the past year.

AHS Staffing debuts on our annual list of the best travel healthcare agencies at number 6! They made Highway Hypodermics’ list in 2019, 2020 and 2021.
AHS Staffing operates four divisions, NurseStat, RenalStat, PharmStat and MedStat. We actually aggregated the scores for all their divisions. The result was 423 total reviews with an aggregate average of 91.02.
The NurseStat division had an exceptionally strong year with score increases on 3 of the six platforms we measure. They also increased their aggregate average score from 85.49 to 90.94. We aggregated their total scores as well.
AHS Staffing is based in Edmond, Oklahoma and was founded in 2009. They place Nursing and Allied professionals in travel healthcare jobs nationwide.
7. Core Medical
Core Medical is number 7 on our list for the second straight year. They had another exceptional year in reviews.
Core Medical’s score increased on 3 of the 6 platforms we measure. Their aggregate average score increased nearly 3 points. Core Medical has a total of 419 reviews and 69 new reviews in the last year. Therefore, they had a large percentage of very strong reviews in the last year.
Core Medical started in 1989. They staff both contract and permanent positions for healthcare professionals of all types.
8. Atlas MedStaff
We’re excited to see Atlas MedStaff back on our list this year! Their aggregate average score came in at 91.23. Their scores increased this year on Highway Hypodermics, Indeed, Facebook and Google. Atlas was on our list in 2017, 2018 and 2019.
Atlas MedStaff is highly regarded as a fun-loving, honest, transparent and inspiring organization. They have a huge presence on social media. Their YouTube channel has over 1,600 videos!
Atlas MedStaff was founded in 2011 and grew quickly under expert leadership. They staff both Nursing and Allied professionals nationwide. They have access to a very high volume of jobs.
9. Medical Solutions
Medical Solutions is one of the largest healthcare staffing companies in the nation. We say that because it’s extremely difficult to scale the type of world-class service that traveling healthcare professionals deserve. Yet Medical Solutions has accomplished just that.
This is Medical Solutions’ second year in a row on our list. They have an average aggregate score of 92.21 on nearly 1,500 reviews.
Medical Solutions is truly delivering exceptional service at scale. They have tons of jobs and a beautiful website to help you find them!
10. Host Healthcare
Host Healthcare has become a fixture on annual lists of the best travel nursing companies. They were number 1 on our list last year. They’ve been on our list every year since 2017.
They were number 1 on Highway Hypodermics list for 2021. They’ve been on HH’s list every year since 2017.
Host Healthcare has outstanding leadership. Their CEO, Adam Francis, has a 99% approval with 46 ratings on Glassdoor. They do an excellent job at hiring and have amazing recruiters as a result.
Host Healthcare staffs both Nursing and Allied professionals nationwide.
11. LiquidAgents Healthcare
LiquidAgents Healthcare has over 1.200 reviews across the six services we track. They have an aggregate average score of 93.61. That’s an increase from last year’s 92.12. LiquidAgents staffs Nursing and Allied professionals nationwide.
12. Emerald Health Services
Emerald Health Services comes in at number 12 on our list of the best travel nursing agencies for 2021. Their aggregate average score came in at 90.48, an increase of over 5 points from last year. Their scores increased from last year on Glassdoor and Google.
Emerald was one of the founding members of NATHO, an organization that seeks to set service standards in the travel healthcare industry. That commitment to service shines in Emerald’s reviews where travelers gush about their recruiters’ responsiveness, thoroughness and friendliness.
Emerald Health Services was founded in 2002. They staff Allied and Nursing professionals nationwide.
13. Hamilton Staffing Solutions
Hamilton Staffing Solutions debuts on our list at number 13. A Registered Nurse founded the agency in 2015, so they’re relatively new. That’s why they just reached our minimum threshold of 50 reviews this year.
Those reviews are absolutely glowing. They describe a team that is patient, responsive, honest and forthright.
Hamilton Staffing Solutions’ aggregate average score was 94.65 on 57 reviews. 47 of those reviews came in the last year. That was during the pandemic which shows that Hamilton is capable of delivering great service during peak times. Hamilton staffs Nursing and Allied professionals nationwide.
14. FlexCare Medical Staffing
We’ve referred to FlexCare Medical Staffing as, “the most decorated company in the history of travel nursing.” They make it on all three industry lists nearly every year. They’ve been in the top Gold Tier every year since 2014 on Travel Nursing Central. They’ve been on our list every year we’ve done it.
There’s a lot for travel healthcare professionals to love about FlexCare. They’re a larger company, so you get access to tons of jobs. At the same time, your recruiter is your single point of contact for everything which maintains service continuity. They offer their best pay rates all the time as a matter of company policy.
FlexCare was founded in 2006. They staff Nursing and Allied professionals nationwide.
15. Tailored Healthcare Staffing
Tailored Healthcare Staffing has been on our list every year since 2017. This year, they came in with a total of 650 reviews with an aggregate average score of 92.56. That was an increase of 1.51 from last year.
Based in Cincinnati, OH, Tailored Healthcare was founded in 2004. They refer to travel nurses as “Super Nurses” and strive take care of them as such. They staff Nurses nationwide.
16. Republic Health Resources
We tallied 464 reviews with an aggregate average score of 90.36 for Republic Health Resources. That’s an increase of 2.36 from last year. Their average score increased on Glassdoor which gave them a bonus in our scoring system.
Republic Health Resources is based in Irving, Texas. They staff travel nurses at over 1,500 facilities nationwide.
17. Travel Nurse Across America
Travel Nurse Across America, also known as TNAA, is a regular on lists of the best travel nursing agencies. They were number 4 on our list in 2018. They were also on our list in 2019. TNAA has been on Travel Nursing Central’s list every year since 2014!
TNAA has lots of unique options for travel nurses. For example, they offer paid sick leave in every state which begins accruing from day 1. You’re able to use it after day 90. They also offer a guaranteed pay option that ensures you get paid if the hospital cancels a shift.
TNAA has an excellent website that is very user friendly. They publish jobs with estimated pay quotes on their website.
TNAA is a larger sized company so they have access to a high volume of jobs. They staff RNs, Techs and Respiratory Therapists nationwide.
18. Fusion Medical Staffing
Fusion Medical Staffing is another highly decorated and larger sized healthcare staffing company. They were number 3 on our list in 2017 and number 7 in 2018. They’ve been on Highway Hypodermics’ and TNC’s lists numerous times.
Fusion has a top-tier website that makes it easy to search for and apply to jobs. They also publish jobs with pay quotes.
Fusion has a very high volume of jobs. They staff Nursing and Allied professionals of all types nationwide.
19. Chesapeake Medical Staffing
This is Chesapeake Medical Staffing’s second appearance on our annual list of the top travel nursing agencies. They were number 10 in 2018.
A Registered Nurse founded Chesapeake in 2001. They focused primarily on PRN staffing in the early years. They’ve been providing travel nursing services roughly a decade. They now staff Nursing and Allied professionals nationwide.
20. Gifted Healthcare
Gifted Healthcare returns to our with a aggregate average score of 91.76 on 405 total reviews. Gifted was number 3 on our list last year and is routinely recognized on other lists.
An RN founded Gifted in 2006. Nearly all of their entire top management team are RNs.
Gifted staffs travel nurses nationwide and has a high volume of jobs. They also staff a lot of PRN in Louisiana, Texas, Oklahoma and Arkansas.
Background Info on Best Travel Nursing Companies List
Now that you’ve perused the list of best travel nursing companies, let’s take a detailed look at how we scored it.
Our scoring system is more tedious than it is complicated. Nonetheless, we’re big fans of transparency so we’re going to share exactly how the system works.
Review Sources and Score Collection
First, we use scores from 6 trusted review sources. We find every travel nursing agency we can on these websites and enter their scores into a spreadsheet. The websites we use are listed below:
Internal Staff and Travel Nursing Reviews
Highway Hypodermics and Travel Nursing Central accept reviews from travel healthcare professionals only. The other review sources accept reviews from both internal employees and travelers.

We have several reasons for counting reviews from the both travelers and internal employees. First, the other sources get much more traffic than niche websites. Therefore, more people see them and they have more reviews. By counting them, we get a much clearer picture of how people perceive travel nursing agencies.
Perhaps more importantly, we strongly believe that happy internal employees are good for travel nurses. Happy employees have lower turnover which means a more cohesive and experienced team for travel nurses.
Fake Reviews and Review Solicitation
Everyone knows that fake reviews exist. That includes us. We check the reviews of every company that qualifies for our list. We look for fake reviews during that process. Over the years, we’ve discovered fake reviews for several companies. We disqualify those companies as a result.
We also know that “review solicitation” exists. We do not think this is a problem unless the company is paying for reviews. We believe it’s normal for companies to ask customers and staff to leave them reviews. If we see that companies pay for reviews, then we disqualify them.
Sample Size and Minimum Requirements
We also have minimum requirements for companies to make it on the list and receive bonuses or penalties. These requirements help solve problems related to sample size.
First, we require a minimum of 50 reviews to make it on the list. We also require a minimum of 15 reviews from healthcare professionals within the last year. We have similar requirements for bonuses and penalties.

We do this to ensure that we have adequate sample sizes. For example, if a company has ten 5-star reviews, then they would have a score of 100 which is really high. However, ten is a very small sample size so it doesn’t necessarily tell us that the company provides 5-star service to their travelers.
Sample Breakdown of our Best Travel Nursing Agency Scoring System
Let’s take a look at a sample score. We’ll use Atlas MedStaff’s scores. Atlas is number 8 on our list this year.
Meeting the Minimum Requirements
First, we collect the number of reviews and review scores from the 6 review services and enter them into our spreadsheet. We add the number of scores together. This gives us the total number of scores. At this point, our minimum requirements are as follows:
Minimum Requirements for Best Travel Nursing Companies
- A company must have a minimum of 50 total reviews across all platforms. That’s not 50 for each platform, but 50 for all platforms combined.
- A company must have a minimum of 15 new reviews from healthcare professionals in the last year.
Again, these requirements ensure that we have an adequate sample size.
Atlas MedStaff has 369 total reviews. Therefore, they meet our minimum requirement of 50.
They had 65 new reviews in the last year. They had 42 new reviews on Highway Hypodermics in the last year. They meet our minimum requirement of 15 reviews in the past year from travel nurses because Highway Hypodermics only accepts reviews from healthcare professionals.
Calculating the Aggregate Average Score
After we enter the scores for each review source into the spreadsheet, we’re ready to calculate the aggregate average score.
In doing so, we must convert all the scores to a common scoring scale. That’s because the review sources use three different scales between them. TNC uses a 100-point scale. HH uses a 20-point scale. The others use a 5-point scale. We convert them all to a 100-point scale.
Here are the scores we collected for Atlas MedStaff this year:
Next, we add the number of reviews to arrive at the total number of reviews.
Next, we calculate the weighted total for each review source. This is also where we convert all the scores to a 100-point scale. To do so, we multiply the scores by 20 for the rating services that use 5-point scales. We multiply by 5 for the rating service that uses a 20-point scale.
Here is how that breaks down for Atlas MedStaff:
Finally, we divide the weighted aggregate total by the total number of reviews to get the aggregate average score. Here is Atlas MedStaff’s calculation:
Aggregate Difference Score
With the aggregate average score for 2021, we can now calculate the “aggregate difference score’. This score rewards or penalizes a company based on the difference between this year’s average score and last year’s average score.
We use the following guidelines for the aggregate difference score:
Minimum Requirements for the Aggregate Difference Score
- To qualify for this score, a company must have had more than 50 total reviews in the previous year. This qualification ensures some modicum of adequate sample size.
- We cap this score at 5 points per company. This qualification also works to ensure some modicum of adequate sample size.
Let’s take a look at this score for our sample company. Atlas MedStaff’s aggregate average score for 2020 was 90.14013158. Their aggregate average score for 2021 is 91.28888889.
So, we subtract 90.14013158 from 91.28888889. We are left with + 1.14875731.
Therefore, Atlas MedStaff receives a bonus of + 1.14875731. We add that bonus to their aggregate average score for 2021. 91.28888889 + 1.14875731 = 92.4376462.
The easiest way to manage your travel nursing career.
And yes, all those decimal places are necessary. For example, our number 4 and 5 companies are separated by less than .06 of a point.
The Individual Difference Score
Finally, we calculate an “individual difference score” for each rating service. This score is similar to the aggregate difference score. However, in this case, we give bonuses or penalties based on the difference between last year’s score and this year’s score for each rating service.
The Individual Difference Score has several guidelines and qualifiers. We choose to keep this scoring mechanism private to ensure that our scoring system cannot be easily copied.

After working for four years at a Chicago-based hospital in the operating room, emergency room, and neonatal ICU, she began to feel burnout from the intensity of COVID. Due to many nurses quitting, her hospital ended up hiring travel nurses to fill shortages.
"I was working next to travel nurses who were making more than double what I was making and we were doing the same work. And I thought, 'Wow, they got to travel to Chicago to do this,'" Watkins said.

Nicole worked at an Arizona hospital in the neonatal ICU for 13 weeks and then extended her contract for an additional eight weeks. She said the recruiter at her agency makes the process easy.

TNAA uses a full-team approach to help travelers, by employing specialty staff like housing experts and clinical leadership. Rodney Sasse, RN, for example, traveled as a nurse with the agency for four years, and now acts as one of the agency's ambassadors in addition to his full-time job as a manager of the neurocritical care department at Washington Regional Medical Center in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
The fact that TNAA was founded in 1999 in North Little Rock, Arkansas, initially attracted Sasse to the company.
"A mutual non-nursing friend who worked for the agency recommended them, but I really liked that they were local to where I was based at that time, so it was nice for me to be able to drive by the headquarters of TNAA and drop off documents during that initial process of onboarding, which can be very extensive," he says.
However, the agency's priority of ensuring its nurses are supported is what kept him working with them. The pay is average, but Sasse says its emphasis on taking care of its travelers, being transparent with contracts, making sure that nurses have all the resources they need, and its willingness to pay for necessary certifications made his time with them pleasant.

Nicole Watkins, RN, who onboarded with AMN in February 2022, says customer service, particularly from her recruiter, is what made her go with AMN.
"I started the process with another agency, but I got the feeling that the recruiter didn't have time for me and was just going through the motions. Then, some nurses I worked with in the NICU at the Chicago hospital I was employed at suggested AMN, so I started the process and really liked how responsive, enthusiastic, and helpful they've been from the start," says Watkins.

As a resident of Illinois, which does not have a Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC)—an agreement between states that allows nurses to have one compact state nursing license so they can practice in other states that are part of the agreement—Watkins had to seek a license to work in states outside of Illinois.
"It's kind of confusing because Illinois is an outlier in most states in the country," she said, but she felt that AMN made the process easy.

"Some agencies aren't able to list as many positions as others are," he explains.

A friend and I are looking to begin travel nursing. We each have 2 years of experience and are looking for the best companies to work with. Money is not the most important thing, but just the idea that they will be there for us and care, and housing is important. We are also wondering if jobs for each of us will always be provided. Any names of good companies that you could recommend?

It is certainly not the first time someone has wondered where to start as far as travel companies. There is no “best company to work for”, only the company that best suits your needs.
As far as traveling philosophies, I think you are starting wise. So many travelers concentrate on making the most money they can and go with the company that looks most enticing monetary wise. However, many of these companies show their true nature with very poor customer service when anything goes awry.
Looking for a solid “all around” company is always your best bet. When I say “all around”, I mean one that offers a decent rate, comparable benefits, and will st and by you should anything occur while on assignment. To find out which companies fit this bill, you need to talk to other travelers or spend some time in any of the online forums devoted to travel nursing. So many people want a quick solution to the question of which company to select for travel, but again, one company will not suit the needs of every traveler.
However, I can give you a starting place for a few solid companies to check out. The first would be the one who runs the website to which you have posted your question. While I have never taken an assignment with Medical Solutions, I have read many positive things about them in the forums. They are also a privately owned company which I favor over the corporate giants. Another solid company, which I have worked with in the past, is RN Network. They have had my back on a few dicey situations while on assignment including two contract cancellations. I have also always been pleased with their housing arrangements.
A few other names also ring out including Trinity Healthcare and Cirrus Medical Staffing. I also have recruiters at these companies that have helped me get others started in travel nursing should you prefer a name to contact rather than just a company (can email me at [email protected] should you wish to go this route).
Finally, I would suggest signing up with at least a few of these companies. While they will do the best to always keep you working, no company out there can promise to keep you working 100% of the time. Once I find a good company, I am loyal to them up to a point. If they can get me to the location I want (the most important factor for me), them I give them every chance to find me an assignment. However, sometimes that is just not possible and where one company cannot place you, another company may have the perfect contract that suits your needs.

Created in 2006, this fairly new company is dedicated to the proposition of promoting quality healthcare by treating its employees well. They don’t pay in the top 80% of companies, but they tend to send nurses to locations where the cost of living is lower, which is both reasonable and common at the end of the day.

This relative newcomer to the traveling nursing agency business, Advantis Medical, has taken the opportunity to learn from the mistakes of other agencies. Still, having been founded in 2018, they have a few refinements to make. But based on their track record, it would not be unreasonable to hope they will improve where they need to. Advantis Global is their parent company and one of the nation’s leading staffing agencies for IT.
Advantis is known for placing nurses into top-tier healthcare institutions. Their expectations are high, but so are their rewards. Traveling nurses can expect to be under more scrutiny than regular nurses, but this means you will have more chances to impress- and that’s a good thing.

Over the past few months, their scores have improved on Glassdoor, HH, and TNC. They took an honorable mention from HH.
14. Travel Nurse Across America
Of all the regular visitors to travel nursing agency top ten lists, Travel Nurse Across America has the highest average score. If you think about it briefly, that’s a pretty impressive distinction. This company in North Little Rock, Arkansas, started in 1999.
While they may not be the best, they are among the best and are more consistent than agencies that regularly outrank them. In other words, with Travel Nurse, you know what you can expect, and you’ll know where you stand. Travel Nurse Across America expects its nurses to know at least a little about every aspect of nursing – which makes sense since you will be traveling to different assignments. But don’t worry. They are good at helping nurses fill in skill gaps. TNAA offers its travel nurses a 12-month program through Aspen University to earn a Bachelor of Science in Nursing.

15. MedPro Healthcare
Sadly, this traveling nursing agency is not as well reviewed as the ones above it. They get their highest scores in pay and benefits, but they have shown poorly in job security, advancement, management, and culture.
Overall, more reviewers gave MedPro Healthcare good reviews than bad ones, but they still don’t seem to stack up against most others on our list. They are not the worst company out there, especially since they seem to do well in employee compensation. But we do hope to see them improve in the future.

Yet another high-scoring traveling nursing agency Aequor, formerly United Staffing Solutions, remains in the low 90s in their rating marks, which is not bad.
Most of their employees report being pleased with their experience, and their highest ratings are in work-life balance. Their lowest ratings are in job security and advancement, which is frightening. But all in all, well-qualified nurses tend to do well with Aequor.

17. Cariant Health Partners
Yet another very high-ranking agency, Cariant Health Partners, gets an average of four and a half out of five stars on Indeed and Glassdoor. The positive reviews far out-pace the negative ones, and their best ratings are in the category of pay and benefits. So, you could do a lot worse. Their lowest ratings are in job security and advancement at 3.9, which is not abysmal.
All in all, for the lowest rating category, that’s pretty high, which could mean their pay and advancement numbers are relatively stable. Their second-highest rating category is in management, which is unusual. If their employees are happy with the management, they are almost certainly doing something right.

In our browser search for this company, we saw “ TotalMed Staffing scam ” in the suggested results, which is never a good sign. However, their scores on Indeed and Glassdoor are acceptable but not great.
They get a solid 3.5 out of five on Indeed and about a 3.6 on Glassdoor. Most of their reviews are positive, and their best scoring category is in culture. Their lowest-scoring category is in job security and advancement. So it would seem that TotalMed Staffing might be an okay place to start but not the best place to end up.

Travel Nurses and Patient Care: Their Impact on Patient Outcomes and How Hospitals Can Help Them Succeed

Travel nurses help fill gaps in hospital staffing, but there are questions about their impact on patient outcomes. Hospitals have consistently relied on travel nurses for decades to fill temporary nursing shortages — and that number is only growing – so healthcare providers must understand the potential impact on patient care.
A recently published systematic review concluded that the relationship between travel nurses and patient outcomes is unclear. The use of travel nurses may be associated with some adverse events in patient care, but these events may be due to hospital staffing and work environment issues.
The review found limited or no impact on patient falls, the number of medication errors, or patient satisfaction but a consistent correlation with hospital-acquired pressure ulcers, the severity of medication errors, and the incidence of nosocomial infections (healthcare-associated infections).

What Is a Travel Nurse?
Travel nurses take on shorter-term assignments at hospitals, often traveling out of town or state to fill staffing gaps. While many of them work to fill the role of a specific staff member absent for vacation, parental leave, illness, or other reasons, employers also use travel nurses to alleviate nursing shortages.
Travel nurses generally earn higher salaries than staff nurses because of the additional stress of travel, being away from home, and lack of benefits. Travel nurses must adapt readily to new situations, procedures, and colleagues. Registered nurses can become travel nurses as independent agents or through a travel nurse agency.
The total hours worked by travel nurses as a percentage of the total hours worked by hospital nurses grew from 4% in January 2019 to 23% in January 2022, according to the American Hospital Association .
How Does Patient Care Differ Between Traditional and Travel Nurses?
According to the review, staffing levels did show a consistent correlation with travel nurses and worse patient outcomes. This finding is unsurprising since hospitals employ travel nurses to address low staffing levels. There is also a strong and consistent evidence-based association between nursing staff levels and patient outcomes, according to a qualitative study.
Staffing levels were the key variable affecting patient outcomes, according to the systematic review. Some patient outcomes did not show a consistent correlation with the use of permanent/traditional nurses rather than travel nurses. The outcomes that did not show an association include:
- Patient falls
- Number of medication errors
- Patient satisfaction
However, some negative outcomes did show a consistent correlation with the use of travel nurses. These include:
- Hospital-acquired pressure ulcers
- Severity of medication errors
- Nosocomial infections (healthcare-associated infections)
Because the research on patient outcomes and travel nursing is still limited, the systematic review included only 21 articles. Many reviewed articles tracked only one or two patient outcomes, and sometimes, studies of the same outcome found different results. For example, some studies found better outcomes for some variables with greater use of travel nurses. More research is needed to further understand the relationship between the use of travel nurses and patient outcomes.
How Can Hospitals Better Accommodate Travel Nurses?
The review also examined how hospital structures, patient risk factors, and travel nurse experience levels impacted patient outcomes. Ultimately, the work environment strongly correlated to patient care.
The study did not find that the type of unit (such as critical care) had a consistent correlation with outcomes and the use of travel nurses. Similarly, patient risk factors and travel nurse experience levels did not show a relationship between travel nursing use and patient outcomes.
The work environment had the strongest impact on overall patient outcomes. Some, though not all, of the studies in the systematic review, indicated that work environment may be the underlying factor that determines whether travel nurse use is associated with adverse patient outcomes.

- Appropriate level of challenges
- Career advancement
- Collaborative work environment
- Control over work environment
- Manager support
- A non-punitive environment
- Nurse input into error prevention
- Job satisfaction
- Patient-centric culture
- Perception of being valued by leadership
- Support for education and development
- Workplace civility
Hospital work environments and staffing levels may have an association with greater use of travel nurses. If permanent staff find staffing levels inadequate or the work environment unsupportive, they may be more likely to leave. Negative work environments can fuel the nursing shortage, which may lead to greater use of travel nurses. Where adverse outcomes seem to be associated with travel nurses, it is entirely possible that the work environment and staffing levels are the underlying causes.

Trevor Phillips now turns the panel's attention to domestic politics and Rishi Sunak's own personal poll ratings.
He shows a YouGov poll from last year compared with this year, in which respondents were asked whether he was a "good/great PM", an "average PM" and a "Poor/Terrible PM".
It shows that people's responses about the PM were more negative this year than last year.
The panel is asked whether the results mean it is "curtains" for Rishi Sunak.
"Probably, yes," says Andrew Marr.
He says that although there could be a year to go before the next election, things could get worse for the UK.
"You look at the numbers and I don't see much way back for the Tories," he adds.
Daniel Finkelstein notes that "the things people care about" such as the economy, "have got worse".
"I don't think there is anything he can do...he's waiting for the economy to improve and it's very difficult for him to control that."
Dororthy Byrne gives her verdict: "He should go now, and give the next lot a chance."
Turning back to the panel, Trevor Phillips raises Benjamin Netanyahu's leadership and the role it has played in the ongoing conflict.
He mentions how a junior minister in the Netanyahu government suggested atomic weapons could be used in Gaza - which Mr Netanyahu has rejected.
Andrew Marr says the Netanyahu government is "a very extreme government with some strange people inside it".
He says he believes the Netanyahu government "does not have very long left of its life" and that many people brought into government "should not be in any government at all".
Daniel Finkelstein says Mr Netanyahu's strategy of "let's supress all Palestinian aspiration" was "wrong" and has been exposed as wrong.
Phillips now raises how the conflict in the Middle East has been felt here in the UK.
He shows the panel an image of how a sign for the Holocaust Library, established by Mr Finkelstein's grandfather Alfred Weiner, has the word "Gaza" emblazoned across it.
Mr Finkelstein says the desecrated sign has now been archived to go in the museum.
Rami Mortada, Lebanon's ambassador to the UK, is Trevor Phillips' next guest.
He says his country is doing its "utmost" to contain the situation in Israel and Gaza.
“The situation is tense and volatile at our southern borders," he explains. "There is low to mid intensity exchange of fire.
“As the Lebanese government we are doing our utmost to contain the situation and not to allow the country to be embroiled in a larger conflict.
“This, of course, necessitates curbing Israeli provocations which we have been sustaining for the last three weeks and finding a horizon for this horrific conflict in Gaza."
He stresses that Lebanon does not want to become "embroiled in this deadly conflict" but that it wants to "curb Israeli provocations".
Phillips turns his questions to Hezbollah, the militant group in Lebanon whose leader, Hassan Nasrallah, has said "all options on the Lebanese front are open".
However, despite issuing the threats, Nasrallah did stop short of announcing all-out war against Israel.
Asked whether he believed there were no plans to "escalate", Mr Mortada says: “I think no one has plans to escalate. Everyone in Lebanon understands the seriousness of embarking in an armed conflict."
However, he says Lebanon has been on the "receiving end" after Israel started "provoking Lebanese territories".
He warns: “They should know that for every action they should expect a reaction. "
Trevor Phillips turns to his guest panel to discuss about the divisions that have erupted in the Labour Party over whether or not it should back a ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas conflict.
As we heard from shadow defence secretary John Healey earlier, Sir Keir Starmer is choosing to back a humanitarian pause rather than a ceasefire, which he previously said would leave Hamas "emboldened".
Columnist and former Conservative Party adviser Daniel Finkelstein says he believes the Labour leader has taken the "right stance" electorally but acknowledges that the situation is a "horrendous calculation" for anyone to make.
Former head of Channel 4 News Dorothy Byrne says a big problem for Sir Keir is that his initial response "lacked humanity and empathy".
Phillips then asks whether a ceasefire is in fact realistic, to which the broadcaster and journalist Andrew Marr argues that much of the debate is about "semantics".
John Healey is asked for his views on the pro-Palestinian protest that is planned for Armistice Day - and which Mr Dowden earlier said he had "grave concerns" about.
The shadow defence secretary says there is a "difficult balance" to strike between allowing the right to free speech and protest and the respect that should be shown for the memorial service.
He says he hopes the police will be able to work with the march organisers ahead of the planned protest next weekend, "so that any sort of conflict which would be utterly unacceptable doesn't arise".
However, he says it "should be possible" to manage the conduct of the remembrance service while also allowing the protesters concerned about Gaza to "undertake their protests at a different time, in a different part of London".
Labour's shadow defence secretary John Healey is the next guest on Sunday Morning With Trevor Phillips .
He is asked about the Israel-Hamas war and the growing calls for a ceasefire to alleviate suffering among Palestinian civilians.
Sir Keir Starmer is facing a mutiny in his own party over his decision to back a humanitarian pause rather than a ceasefire, with a number of mayors and Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar all calling for the latter.
Mr Healey defends Sir Keir's position and reiterates Israel's right to self defence, saying a humanitarian pause is the most "practical" and "realistic" way to get aid into Gaza.
He says the Labour leader is not backing a ceasefire because it "freezes a conflict" and could give Hamas the ability to mount similar attacks to the one it carried out on 7 October.
"What matters is what stands the best chance of working," Mr Healey says.
"In a conflict like this small steps can lead to bigger breakthroughs."
He goes on to say that Sir Keir is "not a protest leader" and that while he understands calls for a ceasefire, he does not believe it is the "right approach".
Mr Healey denied that Sir Keir was "ignoring" the views of some in his party and hinted that a ceasefire may "become possible" once the hostages taken by Hamas are released.
Suella Braverman, the home secretary, has come under criticism for suggesting that rough sleeping is a "lifestyle choice" as she reportedly draws up plans to restrict the use of tents by homeless people in UK towns and cities.
Trevor Phillips asks her Tory colleague Oliver Dowden whether this is the correct language to use, pointing out that some people in these tents are veterans.
Mr Dowden says "we don't want a single rough sleeper on our streets" and says the government has pledged £2bn over the next three years.
But he says the government is trying to address "push factors" such as drug and alcohol addiction.
Mr Dowden says it is his view that if these factors are addressed, the use of tents is not acceptable "if there is somewhere else for people to go".
Mr Dowden is asked about the pro-Palestinian marches that have been taking place across the UK, with another one expected on Armistice Day.
This weekend, four police officers were injured and 29 people were arrested after thousands of pro-Palestinian protesters gathered in Trafalgar Square demanding a ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war.
Asked whether he is happy with the job the police are doing to manage the protests, Mr Dowden says that while he "understands the police have a very difficult job to do", he has concerns that the "Jewish community is fearful right now".
He draws a comparison with protests that followed the death of George Floyd in the US, and says there has not been the "same kind of moral clarity that Jewish lives matter".
"We need to send a clear signal that Jewish people are safe in this country," he says.
Mr Dowden says there is "a lot of hate" in the pro-Palestinian protests, and that people who join them should "consider who they are marching alongside".
Trevor Phillips now turns to the war in the Middle East.
Mr Dowden says that more than 100 British nationals have now crossed through the Rafah crossing into Egypt.
He says it is "disappointing" that the vital crossing was closed yesterday, "meaning we couldn't get more out".
"But we are making representations at every level to reopen the crossing and I am hopeful we will achieve that," he says.
Asked when it will reopen, he says he hopes he can make further progress in getting British nationals out.
Mr Dowden says the UK government is "engaging intensively with the Israelis" and in all the conversations the need for Israel to abide by international law is emphasised.
He says the UK also makes the case for humanitarian pauses to allow aid into Gaza and people out and also to move within the enclave.
Asked how these conversations are going, Mr Dowden says "we are having constructive engagement" with the Israelis.
Oliver Dowden, the deputy prime minister, is our first guest on Sunday Morning With Trevor Phillips.
He is immediately asked about a Mail on Sunday report that the Conservative Party "covered up" allegations of sexual misconduct.
"Any allegation of sexual misconduct I take extremely seriously and the Conservative Party has zero tolerance for sexual misconduct," Mr Dowden says.
He says there is an independent complaints mechanism to investigate any allegations.
He adds that there is a limit to what he can say due to the Mail on Sunday not containing any details about the person involved.
Asked why there is "quite a lot of this in parliament at the moment" and whether there is "something wrong" with Westminster, Mr Dowden replies: "No, I don't think that there's something wrong about parliament and the vast majority... are there to serve their constituents and to serve the nation."
