All You Need to Know About Baker’s Cysts
If you’ve got a lump located behind your knee that is causing you some degree of discomfort, you may very well have a Baker’s cyst. Read on to learn more about this malady.
What Is a Baker’s Cyst?
A Baker’s cyst, also known as a popliteal cyst, occurs when synovial fluid from the knee joint leaks into the extra space behind your knee. The pressure from this fluid squeezing into that small space creates a cyst. This is most commonly caused by disease (often gout or arthritis) or an injury to the area.
What Are the Symptoms of a Baker’s Cyst?
You may not have any symptoms at all if you have a Baker’s cyst. If you do present with symptoms, they might include pain or stiffness in the knee, or swelling behind the knee that worsens when you straighten your leg. You may find the symptoms getting worse after standing for extended periods of time, or after doing physical activity. Your doctor will go over your medical history with you and give you a physical exam, with special attention paid to the knee. He or she will then use an imaging test (an MRI, x-ray or ultrasound) to determine if a Baker’s cyst is to blame for your problems, and to rule out more serious causes like a blood clot or a tumor.
Who Is at Risk of Developing a Baker’s Cyst?
Baker’s cysts can affect anyone, but they are more common in women than in men. They tend to impact people over 40 years of age. Baker’s cysts are more common in individuals afflicted with other conditions of the knee, such as arthritis or tears in the cartilage.
What Treatments Are Available?
If you don’t have any symptoms, you likely will not need any sort of treatment for your Baker’s cyst. The cysts tend to go away on their own. Home remedies such as rest, ice and over-the-counter pain medicines are helpful if symptoms do exist. If these fail to ease your pain, your doctor might recommend medical interventions such as steroid shots or surgery to remove the cyst.
What Are Complications Associated With Baker’s Cysts?
Though very rare, it is possible for a Baker’s cyst to cause complications. The cyst can enlarge, causing more pain and swelling behind the knee joint. The cyst can also rupture, which can lead to serious consequences, such as a blockage of the popliteal artery, disturbance of the tibial nerve or compartment syndrome. If your doctor has diagnosed you with a Baker’s cyst and you have subsequent redness or swelling of the leg, contact your doctor immediately. These are signs that the cyst may have ruptured.

Sam Baker makes people happy. The characters in his songs face many challenges—alcoholism, car wrecks, racism, drug addiction, a mother’s abandonment—but they persevere. Much like Sam himself.
In 1986 Sam got in the middle of someone else’s war. When a terrorist bomb exploded in his train compartment, he went from being a young, healthy, tourist enjoying Peru with friends to a broken man surrounded by death and dying. Given his injuries, he too should have died. But through a series of miracles and coincidences he survived.
When the cranial bleed in his brain healed, he had to relearn nouns, and after his right eardrum was replaced, he regained some hearing. With the top of his left hand gone, it seemed that his formerly skillful hands had been transformed into blocks of wood, but eventually those hands learned how to play an upside-down guitar.
Physically, Sam was recovering, but his life was filled with pills, booze, and rage. Then came the voices and messengers that helped him see that the greatest gift is life itself. He learned about forgiveness. He needed to tell his story. Songs started to come from that upside-down guitar. Before he knew it, there were CDs, tours around the world and awards in Rolling Stone.
Sam feels compelled to tell his story—through his music, art, or any means possible—to one person at a time, or to thousands from a festival stage.
A Sam Baker show is a celebration. Some songs tell of everyday people who survive life’s daily challenges; others are stories of growing up in a small Texas prairie town. All his shows are an acknowledgment and appreciation of the pure joy that comes with people gathering to listen to live music. Out to Lunch is delighted to welcome Sam to Belfast.
