Sakai Port (area:CHUGOKU/TOTTORI)

Port Information

The Sakai Port is a natural harbor sheltered by the Shimane Peninsula on the north. Geographically it is situated almost exactly mid-way between the Tsuruga Port and the Shimonoseki Port and due to its location, the Sakai Port plays an important role in the economies of the Hanshin, Sanyo and Kyushu regions. For centuries this port has been a focus of trade with mainland Asia and its location has meant it possessed great strategic and economic importance. Moreover, the Sakai Port is one of the few ports in Japan where a significant volume of the fishing catch is brought to land unfrozen; in fact the port is known as the "Tasty Port" of the Japan Sea due to the large volume and high quality of Pacific bluefin tuna and red snow crab brought here without being frozen. The area is blessed with the natural beauty and abundance of the San'in Region, as well as many Japanese historical and cultural sites, such as the Izumo Grand Shrine. The seaside and mountain villages, as well as the delicious and varied food, are enjoyable. Whatever the season, one can relax in Onsen, and visitors can find many interesting sites to visit, particularly those with a passion for anime and manga culture.

Sightseeing:
Wedged between sea, sky and mountains, this small fishing port has been esteemed for centuries for its superb seafood.
Sakaiminato is the home of Shigeru Mizuki, the creator of GeGeGe no Kitaro, a character seen in many forms throughout Japan. The spirit of Kitaro can be found in Sakaiminato, on Kitaro Road, a street dedicated to all the characters that appear in Mizuki's stories. One hundred bronze statues of the story's characters line both sides of the road.
Tours Excursions Transportation:
Hama Loop Bus has Two Courses; Main Course and Life Course. Main Course conveniently runs around a network of major places such as Municipal Administration Offices, Hospitals and Sight-seeing Spots. There are a Bus running Right Loop Course and a Bus running Left Loop Course. One Loop Bus runs right loop clockwise and the other one runs left loop counter clockwise, each departing from and arriving at the City Hall which is the base point. It would be more convenient if one would check the location of bus stop where to get on and where to get off before using the loop bus.
The fishing wharf and center of town are compact enough to enjoy on foot.

Nearby Places:
Sakaiminato is also your gateway to a very ancient region of Honshu. West of the city lies Izumo-taisha , one of the oldest and holiest shrines in Shinto. This area is dotted with burial mounds from Japan's Bronze Age. The town of Matsue boasts the celebrated " Black Castle ," a six-story, black-walled castle that home to a clan of the mighty Tokugawa dynasty that ruled Japan for over 250 years. And to the east rises the great snow-capped summit of Mt. Daisen , considered one of the four most scenic mountains in all Japan.
Shopping and Food
Kitaro-related souvenirs of all types are available everywhere. Anything related to the Medama Oyaji or Eyeball Daddy character seems especially popular.
The currency in Japan is the yen. It comes in denominations of ¥10,000, ¥5,000 and ¥1,000 notes, as well as ¥500, ¥100, ¥50, ¥10, ¥5 and ¥1 coins.
ATMs in Japan are becoming more useful, and most can be used to withdraw funds from overseas accounts. Post offices also offer ATMs. Major credit cards are accepted at a majority of stores and restaurants in large urban areas, but if you plan on spending any time in rural areas, be sure to carry sufficient cash. Japan is still very much a cash society and some stores, hotels and restaurants-regardless of location-refuse credit cards.
Don't tip, as it's considered rude!

Take a look at post #2 on the following thread.

Kaike-onsen Hot Springs about 30 minutes by taxi from Sakaiminato http://www.kaike-onsen.com/english/hot.html
Sakaiminato port city is known for it's comic book characters (which don't mean a whole to visitors who are unfamiliar with them)
Yonago city nearby is another option http://ygg.go-to-japan.jp/
Would love to visit Matsue. We will be in port from 6AM to 6PM Would this be ample time, don't want to miss sailing would have to back on board by 4:30 or 5 at the latest. Do you know where we can get the train and where I could get the schedule?
Yonago sounds interesting. How would we get there? Is it easy to get around if we are unable to get the service of a goodwill guide? I sent an email to the goodwill guide site. Thank you for all your suggestions

Cruise to Sakaiminato, Japan
Things to do in sakaiminato.

Storm the Castle
Matsue Castle in Sakaiminato, Japan
Less than an hour by bus or train from Sakaiminato is the lakeside city of Matsue, capital of Shimane Prefecture and home to one of Japan's few still-standing 17th-century samurai fortresses, Matsue Castle. Another excellent piece of traditional architecture is the nearby Koizumi Yakumo Memorial Museum, dedicated to Greek-Irish writer Lafcadio Hearn.

Sacred Stop
Statue of Okuninushi in Izumo Taisha grand shrine in Sakaiminato, Japan
Believed to be Japan's oldest Shinto shrine, Izumo Taisha is a revered sanctuary dedicated to Okuninushi, the god of marriage. The shrine is famous for its enormous shimenawa sacred ropes, and while its design dates back to the mid-18th century, this spot has been a place of worship since at least the year 950. The Shimane Museum of Ancient Izumo next door has a comprehensive account of local history.

Get Comical
If you prefer to stay in Sakaiminato, check out the legacy of local hero Shigeru Mizuki, a celebrated comic artist who created many yokai (monster) characters including the beloved GeGeGe no Kitaro. Mizuki Shigeru Road features 153 bronze statues of these creations, and the Mizuki Shigeru Museum offers a fascinating look at the artist's life and the world of yokai .

Local Cuisine
Sakaiminato offers some of the best seafood in Japan, so come hungry. There's sushi, sashimi and kaisendon — a bowl of sashimi and fish roe over rice. If you're lucky enough to visit in winter, don't miss matsubagani , the sweet-tasting regional snow crab: Enjoy it raw sashimi-style, tossed into a hearty stew or grilled with soy-based dipping sauce.

Tottori Prefecture is known for its fine sake rice wine. Browse the selection at Chiyomusubi sake brewery off Mizuki Shigeru Road in Sakaiminato. You can watch the sake craftsmen in action with a brewery tour. During your Sakaiminato cruise vacation, pick up a figurine of GeGeGe no Kitaro or another of Shigeru Mizuki's characters in Sakaiminato center.
