How to clear Safari’s cache and cookies on Mac

There are a handful of situations when clearing Safari’s cookies or cache–one of the places where Safari stores website data to avoid having to download it afresh each time you access a site–can help improve your browsing experience.
The first is when websites simply stop working when you access them on Safari. Perhaps Facebook stops updating with new posts, for example, or the images on a site don’t appear as they should. If this happens, it’s likely the cache has become corrupted.
Alternatively, if you find that personal info automatically completed on sites isn’t correct, deleting cookies can help. These are small files that sites use to save data about you and what you do on the site.
Even if none of these problems affect you, periodically cleaning browser data can help protect your privacy from snoops who want to discover what you’ve been up to online. In this article, therefore, we explain how to clear Safari’s cache and cookies on Mac.
We also have an article that explains How to clear cache on a Mac.
How to clear Safari cookies and cache for websites
Cleaning cookies and the cache data for individual sites can be done via Safari’s Settings/Preferences.
- Open Safari
- Click on Safari in the menu at the top of the screen.
- Click on Settings or Preferences (depending on the version of macOS you are running).
- Go to the Privacy tab.
- Click on Manage Website Data…
- Choose Remove All or select websites individually to remove.
After the data is loaded you’ll probably see a long list of websites. You can choose to Remove All or just select individual websites you want to remove from this list. If you want to select a number of different sites you can click on one and then press and hold the Command key to select a second, third or fourth and so on. We recommend that you don’t select hundreds this way – it’s better to delete in batches just in case you have to start over.
If you would prefer to select all and then deselect the ones you want to keep you can do so. Use Command + A to select all, then press and hold Command while clicking on any website you are happy to keep in this list. Just click Remove afterwards, not Done, as that will just undo all your hard work.
There’s a search field you can use to track down individual sites.
Bear in mind that deleting cookies might remove autocompleted login usernames and passwords for sites, and will almost certainly log you out of that site if you’ve configured it to automatically log in each time you visit.

How to clear Safari cache
The hidden Safari Developer menu can be used to clear just the cache, leaving cookies and the browser history in place. This is a very useful diagnostic step to take before removing those two items if a website behaves badly.
If you just want to clear all your cache you can do so by following these steps:
- Open Safari.
- Click on Safari in menu bar at top of screen.
- Click on Settings/Preferences (depending on the version of macOS you are running).
- Click on the Advanced tab.
- Check the box beside Show Develop Menu in Menu Bar.
- Now there will be a new Develop tab in the menu at the top of your screen. Click on this.
- Click on Empty Caches.
Alternatively click on Option/Alt + Command + E.
Close any open Safari windows and select Empty Caches on the Develop menu. Then click File > New Window to start Safari with a clean cache.

How to remove autocomplete data from AutoFill
Safari’s AutoFill tool can fill in username and password details on websites as well as credit card details and other elements like your address and email details.
This can be really useful, but it can also be annoying if the data it fills in is incorrect or out of context. It’s also a problem when AutoFill helpfully enters old or incorrect passwords or emails and addresses.
You can change this data, or delete it by following these steps:
- Click on Safari.
- Click on Settings/Preferences.
- Choose the AutoFill tab.
- Here you can edit contact information, usernames and passwords, credit cards and other data. Click on Edit beside the category you want access to.
- You’ll need to enter your password or use Touch ID to gain access.
Delete incorrect data: If you are finding that Safari is autofilling incorrect data about you–your address, for example–click Edit beside Using information from my contacts. This will open up your Contacts app. Your card will be at the top or under My Card. You can add and amend data about you here.

Delete incorrect passwords and site logins: If you wanted to delete incorrect passwords, for example, you can just click on the Passwords tab. If you know which password you want to remove search for the website or service and then find the older password option (if there is more than one) and select it and then click on the – below the column to remove it. You can then select Delete Password. If that means there is no password saved for that website, you can then recreate the entry for the site by clicking the Add button. You’ll first need to provide the URL of the site (that is, something like https://facebook.com ), and then type the username and password alongside (hit the Tab key to move from field to field).
See: How to autofill passwords, bank cards, names and addresses for more.

Delete logins and passwords system-wide
Pruning site logins can also be done via the Keychain Access app, which you’ll find in the Utilities folder of the Applications list in Finder, although you should be very careful using this app because it pretty much controls the entire security operation of your Mac! However, by removing errant username and password entries here you’ll stop virtually all of your Mac apps using them, and not just Safari.
Just type the name of the site into the Search field, and look in the list of results for entries of the kind Web Form Password. Right-click the entry and select Delete.

How to clear your Safari browser cache on a Mac, iPhone, or iPad
- You can clear your cache on Safari in just a few steps on a Mac, iPhone, or iPad.
- Clearing your cache, as well as history and cookies, can help resolve your device's performance issues.
- Clearing your cookies will clear your passwords as well, unless you save them with keychain.
A cache is a store of data. When you visit a website on your Mac, iPhone, or iPad, the Safari browser keeps a snapshot of the pages you view.
If you go back to that website, Safari loads the cached page in an instant, instead of taking the time to retrieve the page from the internet again.
But an overloaded cache can take up storage space and cause your device to run inefficiently — and it could use a periodic clearing.
Here's what you need to know to clear your cache on Safari, as well as your cookies and browsing history.
How to clear Safari cache on Mac
You can either clear just your cache or your cache, history, and cookies.
Clear your cache
1. Click on the Safari tab at the top left of your screen and choose Preferences from the dropdown menu.
2. Click the Advanced tab of the menu that pops up.
3. At the end of the tab, select the Show Develop menu in menu bar box and close the Preferences menu.
4. Click the Develop tab from the Safari menu at the top of the page.
5. Click Empty Caches from the dropdown menu.
Clear your cache, history, and cookies
You may also want to clear your browsing history and cookies in addition to emptying your cache. Here's how to do that.
1. Choose the History tab at the top of your screen.
2. At the very bottom of the dropdown menu, choose Clear History.
3. A box pops up with a choice to clear the last hour, today, today and yesterday, or all history. Choose your time frame and click the Clear History button.
Once you clear the history, it will also clear the cache and cookies associated with that time period.
How to clear Safari cache on iPhone or iPad
To clear your cache and browsing history:
1. Open the Settings app.
2. Tap Safari .
3. Tap Clear History and Website Data .
4. On the screen that pops up, choose Clear History and Data .
To clear your cache but not your browsing history:
3. Tap Advanced .
4. Tap Website Data .
5. Choose Remove All Website Data .
What happens to saved passwords when you clear your cache
When you clear your cache, history, and cookies, you may discover that Safari has logged you out of your favorite websites.
While clearing Safari's cache alone will not delete your passwords, clearing your history and cookies can. That's because when you empty your cookies, you will lose their password data saved in Safari as well. And keep in mind that clearing your history also clears its associated cookies.
Luckily, Apple has a solution to this problem. If you use iCloud, check your iCloud settings on your phone or computer.
Make sure that you've checked the box for Safari. As long as this box is checked, any passwords you save through your browser will stay safe in your keychain .

What to Know
- Open Safari > select Preferences > Privacy tab.
- In the Cookies and website data section, select Manage Website Data > select website(s) > Remove .
This article explains how to manage and delete cookies and caches in the Safari web browser. Information applies to Macs with macOS High Sierra (10.11) and later.
Delete Cookies and Cache in Safari
You can choose to delete all your stored cookies and caches or only specific data you want to remove, leaving the others behind.
Launch Safari, go to the Safari menu, then select Preferences .
In the window that opens, go to the Privacy tab.
In the Cookies and website data section, select Manage Website Data to open an alphabetical list of the websites for which your computer is storing data, including cookies and caches.
To delete a single website, scroll through the alphabetical list, or use the search field. Select it, then choose Remove to delete any data your computer stores for that website. This can be helpful when you have problems with a specific website.
Select multiple sequential websites using the Shift key. Select the first cookie, then hold the Shift key and select the second website. Any websites in between the two are selected.
Use the Command key to select noncontiguous websites. Select the first cookie and then hold the Command key as you select each additional cookie.
Select Remove to delete the selected cookies.
Select Remove All to delete all the websites on the list. No selection is necessary. You are prompted to confirm that you want to delete all the data stored by the websites. Confirm by selecting Remove Now in the pop-up window.
Delete Safari Caches
If you prefer to leave the cookies in place and delete only the caches, do so through the Developer menu on the Safari menu bar. The Developer menu isn't enabled by default. You turn it on in the Safari preferences menu and then clear the caches:
In the window that opens, go to the Advanced tab.
Select the Show Develop menu in menu bar check box and close the preference screen.
Select Develop in the Safari menu bar, then select Empty Caches .
Alternatively, press Option + Command + E on the keyboard.
This is an all-or-nothing option. You can't select individual caches to remove in the Develop menu.
Corrupt Cookies Affect the Safari Experience
When a web browser accumulates cookies over a long time, bad things can happen. Cookies eventually become out of date, consuming space while serving no benefit. Cookies can also become corrupt from Safari freezes, power outages, unplanned Mac shutdowns, and other events. Eventually, you may find that Safari and some websites no longer work well together, if at all.
Troubleshooting the reason Safari and a website fail to work well together is challenging. A corrupt cookie or cached data may be the culprit.

How to Clear Cache and Cookies in Safari for Mac, iPhone, and iPad
Apple’s Safari browser brought several features and interface refresh in the past few years. You can now use tab groups on Safari for macOS and even Safari extensions on iPad . This makes the browser a good option compared to competitors like Microsoft Edge . When Safari is your go-to browser on Mac, iPhone, and iPad, you’d want to keep it spiffy and fast. You’ll need to purge all the website data and cookies it has accumulated over time.

When Safari takes a little more while to open web pages or shows up a mangled web page, it’s time to dump the old cache and cookies. Clearing this data is different for Mac, iPhone, and iPad. This guide will show you how to clear cache and cookies in Safari on Mac, iPhone, and iPad.
Why Should You Clear Cache and Cookies From Safari
Every browser stores website cache and cookies to make the experience of that particular site faster and more convenient – be it your favorite social media site or work portal. For instance, if you visit Facebook or Twitter often, those sites would open quickly on Safari compared to a new site you’d visit for the first time.

That faster loading experience happens because Safari stores the cookies to log you in quickly and cache the website elements to load faster. That seems very helpful. Over time, Safari’s data of websites become old, and you might experience a delay or the site asking you to log in again. It may not even load properly till you clear the cache. While you may find it odd, cached data can also take up considerable storage on your phone and computer over time.
Cookies help websites keep a tab on your browsing patterns, store your preferences, and even help you to log into sites quickly. At times, you might see ads very specific to your browsing activity. Some may consider this to be a breach of their privacy. That’s why it’s a good idea to keep purging cookies regularly.
Remember that removing cache and cookies might make you feel that Safari has slowed down. When Safari collects enough fresh cache and data, it’ll deliver the usual browsing experience.
How to Clear Cache and Cookies in Safari on Mac
By default, many Mac users prefer Safari and often don’t want to clean up the cache and cookies. However, Apple makes it very easy to do that and also customize Safari on Mac to suit your usage. Here’s how to clear cache and cookies in Safari on Mac.
Step 1: Open Safari on your Mac.

Step 2: Click on the Safari tab in the top-left corner of the menu bar to bring up the contextual menu.

Step 3: Select the Preferences option.

Step 4: Navigate to the Advanced tab in the Preferences window.

Step 5: Tick the checkbox next to ‘Show Develop menu in the menu bar.’ Close the preferences window.

Step 6: Click on the Develop option in the menu bar at the top.

Step 7: Select the Empty Caches option.

That will immediately clear Safari’s cache from your Mac. Continue to clear up the cookies too.
Step 8: Click on the Safari tab at the top of the menu bar.
Step 9: Select the Preferences option.
Step 10: Navigate to the Privacy tab.

Step 11: Click on Manage Website Data.

Here, you will see all the websites that have stored cookies while browsing.
Step 12: Select the Remove All option to clear all cookies from Safari.

Step 13: Click on Remove Now when prompted.

The macOS will remove all the cookies in Safari on your Mac. Additionally, you can also select the Block all cookies option in Privacy Preferences if you don’t want any cookies to be stored in the future. However, that will make browsing inconvenient, and you’ll need to log in to your favorite sites manually.

If you also use another browser on your Mac, you can check our guides on how to clear the cache on Google Chrome and clear cache and cookies on Microsoft Edge .
How to Clear Cache and Cookies in Safari on iPhone and iPad
The steps to clear Safari cache and cookies on both an iPhone and an iPad are the same. While they both might offer different operating systems, Safari still follows the same routine for saving browser cache and cookies.
Step 1: Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad and scroll down to the Safari option.

Step 2: Scroll down to the bottom of the screen and tap on Advanced.

Step 3: Select Website Data.

Step 4: You will see a list of website cache and cookies that Safari stores on your iPhone or iPad. Tap on ‘Remove All Website Data.’

Step 5: Tap on Remove Now to confirm your action.

That will clear all the cache and cookies in Safari on your iPhone or iPad.
Additionally, you can enable the toggle next to Block All Cookies in the Safari Settings menu to prevent any cookies from being stored on your iPhone or iPad in the future. Again, that’ll only treat every website as new on Safari, and you might have to log into your favorite sites manually.

Clear Cache and Cookies for a Smooth Browsing Experience
While clearing cache and cookies regularly is important, you don’t need to do it every week. Once a month should be good enough. You can also perform these steps for issues like Safari keeps crashing on your Mac .

How to clear cache and cookies on Safari for iPad or iPhone

Your cache is a store of data that contains information that can directly affect your privacy. This includes information about your browsing history – because Safari stores a snapshot of the pages you visit to let it load pages quicker next time. As a result, cache results in data being stored on your device regarding your previous browsing habits –even if you regularly delete your browsing history.
In addition to the potential privacy benefits of deleting your cache, there are practical reasons why it is a good idea to clear it. Over time, your cache can begin to clog up your device, making it slow. By clearing your cache you refresh the internal memory set aside for it, which allows your device to start up faster and run more efficiently.
How to clear your cache on iPad and iPhone
If you want to gain the benefits of clearing your Safari cache, you can do so by following the steps below on either an iPad or iPhone. Bear in mind that when you clear your cache on an iPad or iPhone, you also delete your browsing history.
- Open the Settings app with the cog symbol.
- Scroll down on the left-hand side and tap Safari .

It is worth noting that when you clear your cache and browsing history, it will also delete it from any other connected devices that are connected to the same iCloud account.
Will clearing cache delete my passwords?
When you clear your cache and browsing history, you will delete any passwords currently saved in your browser. This can be frustrating if you do not use a password manager with an auto-fill feature because you will end up logged out of the services you use – and you will need to enter your passwords manually (if you can remember them!)
At ProPrivacy, we recommend that you consider using a secure password manager , as this will ensure that you can clear your cache at any time and still easily access your passwords for any online service or account that you use.
How to use iCloud Keychain to save your Safari passwords
The good news is that you can actually save your passwords to your iCloud keychain. To do so, follow the steps below:
- Open the Settings app.
- Click on your Apple ID profile in the top left.
- Click on iCloud on the right-hand side.

- Now check that your iCloud Keychain is also switched on (as in the image above).
- Head back to the main Settings screen and scroll down to Passwords .
- When prompted verify using the fingerprint reader.
- On the right-hand side select AutoFill Passwords and toggle it on.

This will ensure that your Safari passwords get saved to your Keychain.
What else should you clear?
Using the instructions above will clear your web history and Safari cache. To gain better privacy, however, it is also a good idea to clear your cookies from time to time.
Cookies are trackers that permit websites and online services to track you each time you visit their site. These tracking cookies enable ad services to follow you around the web and cause targeted advertising that results in information about you being amassed by those marketing services.
How to clear your cookies on iPad or iPhone
The guide below explains how to delete your cookies to prevent tracking, without also deleting your web history. this is useful if you want to keep your web history intact, while also removing stubborn trackers.
- Open the iOS Settings app with the cog symbol.
- Scroll down to Safari on the left-hand side and tap it.
- On the right-hand side, scroll down to the bottom and tap Advanced .
- Now select Website Data .
- You will now see a list of all the website data stored on your device, tap on Remove All Website Data .
It is worth noting that doing this will also remove any saved passwords and log you out of services in your Safari browser. For this reason, you should check that you have set up Safari to save your passwords to your keychain, using the steps earlier in this guide.
How to clear cache for third-party apps on iPad and iPhone
If you are experiencing sluggishness when using certain apps, you may need to clear the cache for your individual apps.
Some apps allow you to do this in the settings of your iPad or iPhone. So scroll down to the app in question, tap on it, and search for an option that says reset or delete cache.
If the third-party app you are using will not let you delete your cache in settings, you may need to delete it from within the app itself. To do this, launch the app in question, open its settings, and look for a way to clear the cache (you can do this in Chrome, for example, by selecting clear browsing data ).
If you run into any difficulties, we recommend checking for instructions online to find out how to delete cache on the specific iOS app in question.
Offload App
Alternatively, if you want to create more space on your device, you can opt to offload an app instead:
- Open the Settings app on your iPad or iPhone.
- Scroll down to General and tap on it.
- Tap on iPad Storage (or iPhone Storage).
- You will now see a list of your apps. Click on the app that is taking up too much space and select Offload App .
Offloading an App temporarily removes it, but saves any important documents and account data that you require to use it again. This is only really useful if the app itself is very large, but the data it creates is not.

How to Delete Cookies and Stored Website Data in Safari
Websites and advertisers use cookies to identify you and follow you around the internet, and they might also save other website data to remember you by. In Safari, you can delete these cookies and other data. Let's head to Safari's privacy settings.
Stored content can include a history of your site visits or information you provided the site, such as your name and email address. You can delete all of the website data at once or for individual sites.
Delete Cookies and Saved Data on the Mac
1. Select Preferences from the Safari menu or hold down the Command key and the comma key at the same time (Command+,).
2. Go to the Privacy tab.
3. Click the Remove All Website Data button to remove all stored website data, or skip to step 5 to remove data on a site-by-site basis.
4. Click Remove Now to confirm. Note, as Safari warns you, this could log you out of sites and perhaps also change how they function. For example, instead of getting tailored ads on the site, you'll be served generic ones.
5. To remove stored data by site, click the Details button.
6. Select the sites with stored data you want to remov e. Hold down the Command key to select multiple sites.
7. Click Remove.
8. Click Done.

Clear Cache, Cookies and History on Safari
Updated at: Feb 26, 2022
Here are instructions to help you clear your browsing history, cookies & cache in Safari on macOS.
There's a few guides here, what would you like to do:
- Clear the entire Cache, Cookies, and History in Safari on macOS
- Clear the Cache, Cookies, and Local Storage Data (but not the history) in Safari on macOS
- Clear saved Form Data and Passwords
Clear the entire Cache, Cookies, and History in Safari
Click the "safari" menu.
Make sure you have a Safari window open and active; you will see the "Safari" menu in the top left of your screen. Click it and it will expand to show Safari specific options.

Click the "Clear History..." item
Now that you have expanded the Safari menu, you will see the Clear History... item - click on it.

Choose the time range to delete and then "Clear History"
Safari now gives you a very simple interface for clearing your browsing cache, history, and cookies. When you click Clear History your cache, browser history, and cookies will be deleted for the specified time range.

If you choose the default option of " all history " then the entire historical record of your browsing on this computer will be deleted. At the top of the prompt, you'll see "Clear: all history" - you can click on this Select field and choose a time range to clear instead.
So instead of deleting all your history, you can choose to just delete Today's browsing history, or just the past hour's history.
Once you have decided how much you want to delete, click the Clear History button.
Congratulations, you have now cleared your selected browsing data from your computer. You can simply close this window and continue to use Safari.
Clear the Cache, Cookies, and Local Storage Data in Safari
These steps will remove Safari's automatic cache of temporary data it has stored while you browse the internet; these steps won't delete your browsing history .
Click the "Preferences" menu item
Now that you have expanded the Safari menu, you will see the Preferences item - click on it.

The Safari Preferences screen will now appear.
Click the "Privacy" tab
The Safari Preferences screen has a number of sections, indicated by the various options along the top of the screen (General/Tabs/AutoFill etc). Click the Privacy item to see privacy related options.

Click "Manage Website Data...
On the privacy tab, click the Manage Website Data button to show a list of all the sites Safari has collected data for.

Select the site/s you want to delete data from, and click "Remove"
On this screen you will see a list of all the domains Safari has collected data for. Find the ones you want to remove (you can search for a domain in the Search field in the top right of the window.

Delete one page from Safari's Cache
If you just want to delete the cache and cookies from one website, you can select the domain name here and press the Remove button. This will keep all the other data intact and just remove the one site's cookies and cache.
You can remove sites one at a time, you can hold down the ⌘ Command button and keep clicking to select more than one domain at a time.
When you have selected the domains you want to clear the data from, simply press the Remove button and Safari will clear the data for those sites.
If you remove data for any sites you are logged in to, you will probably have to re-log in to them again, but your browsing history will still be intact.
Clearing Form Data and Passwords in Safari
Follow these instructions to clear the form data and passwords that have been saved in Safari.
Click the "AutoFill" tab
The Safari Preferences screen has a number of sections, indicated by the various options along the top of the screen (General/Tabs/AutoFill etc). Click the AutoFill item to see AutoFill related options.

Choose what to AutoFill, and edit/clear existing data
On the AutoFill screen, you will see a listing of types of data Safari can be configured to "remember" for you - that way, when you need to fill out some forms online, Safari will try to automatically put the correct data in for you. You can turn this feature on or off for different types of data, including contact information, credit cards, usernames & passwords, and so on.

To review, edit, and delete the items that Safari has saved, click the corresponding Edit... button. Some of these items require you to enter the password for your computer - that is, the user you are currently logged in as on your Mac.
You can use these interfaces to review and optionally delete any information you've previously entered from your computer. Because some of it is sensitive (Passwords, Credit Card numbers etc) you will have to unlock various sections by entering your computer's password.
When you are finished, simply close Safari's Preferences by clicking the Red "close" button.

When you move around the Internet, your Web browser often saves browsing information to speed up load times and simplify tasks such as filling out forms and remembering personal preferences. While storing this data as cookies and in the browser's cache can be handy, keeping tabs on what's being stored and tracked is important to safeguarding your privacy. How to Clear Cache and Cookies on Your Mac
Follow these quick guides to clear the cache and cookies for every major browser on your Mac.
Your Mac’s internet browser saves data in its cache and uses cookies to improve your browsing experience.
The cache stores information about websites, so you don’t have to re-download content when you visit them again. Cookies tell a webpage who you are and where you browse, so it can give you information you might want faster.
It’s good to clear your cache and cookies occasionally to make room on your Mac and let your browser run faster. Below, we’ll go over how to clear the cache and cookies on several Mac browsers—find yours and start clearing today!
How to Clear the Cache in Safari
Safari does a lot to reduce tracking data as you browse the internet , but it still has caches and cookies you should clear out periodically.
To clear out caches in Safari, you’ll need the Develop menu to be visible to you. To make the Develop menu visible, head to Safari’s Preferences (keyboard shortcut is Cmd + Comma ), and click on the Advanced tab. Check the Show Develop menu in menu bar box.
To then clear your caches, go to the menu bar in Safari and click on Develop > Empty Caches . You can also use the keyboard shortcut Option + Cmd + E to perform this action.
If you want to clear cookies in Safari, everything you need is right in Safari’s Preferences. Go to the Privacy tab and click on the Manage Website Data button. A window will appear, and after a few seconds of loading, you’ll see a searchable list of all the sites keeping cookies on you in Safari.
You can click on any of the site names on this list to highlight them, and then delete them by hitting the Remove button. This can be done individually, or you can highlight several sites at a time before hitting Remove .
To quickly delete all of your cookies at once, hit the Remove All button. We’d personally recommend this option for a quick cleanup. Once it’s done, hit Done to leave the window and close Preferences.
How to Clear the Cache in Google Chrome
Clearing your caches and cookies in Google Chrome can help it run better, and there are a few ways to go about it in the browser.
The fastest way, and the way we’d recommend, is to click on the three dot menu icon and select More Tools > Clear Browsing Data . You can also go to Chrome in the top menu and select Clear Browsing Data there, or use the shortcut Shift + Cmd + Delete .
You’ll be brought to a window labeled Clear browsing data within Chrome’s settings. In here, click on the Advanced tab and check the boxes beside Cookies and other site data as well as Cached images and files .
Set the Time Range dropdown menu to as far back as you want to clear out from Chrome’s data stores. For a full removal of everything, you’ll need to select All time from the list.
Once that’s all set, click on the Clear data button to clear out Chrome’s caches and cookies all at once.
You can delete individual cookies on Chrome as well. But to clear your cache, you need to follow our steps above, and you might as well clear your cookies while you’re in there.
How to Clear the Cache in Microsoft Edge
Microsoft Edge on the Mac looks and acts a lot like Google Chrome, including the way you clear your caches and cookies in it.
To do the clearing open Edge’s Settings by clicking on the three dot menu and selecting it there, or by using the keyboard shortcut Cmd + Comma .
In Settings, select Privacy, Search, and Services and scroll down to the Clear browsing data header. Click the Choose What to Clear button.
Much like you would in Chrome, in the Clear browsing data window that appears, check the boxes beside Cookies and other site data and Cached images and files . Set the Time Range to however far back you want—it’ll need to be All Time to delete everything.
Click the Clear Now button. Your caches and cookies in Edge will now be cleared away!
How to Clear the Cache in Firefox
Firefox is another browser that conveniently lets you clear your caches and cookies in one place.
To do the clearing, open Firefox > Preferences , and select the Privacy & Security tab.
Scroll down to the Cookies and Site Data header and click on the Clear Data button you find there. A window will appear. Check the boxes beside Cookies and Site Data and Cached Web Content in the window. Then hit the Clear button.
Firefox has another quick cache and cookie clearout method if you want to use that instead. Open the three line menu button and click on History . In the menu that appears, select Clear Recent History . A Clear History window will pop up.
In the Clear History window, check the boxes beside Cookies and Cache . Set the Time range to clear dropdown to as far back as you want. We’d recommend choosing Everything to completely clear everything out.
Hit the OK button. Your caches and cookies will be cleared out this way too!
If you want to delete individual cookies in Firefox , you need to navigate to Manage Data instead of Clear Data, then select and delete the cookies and site data that appear there.
How to Clear the Cache in Opera
If you’re looking to clear the caches and cookies in your Opera browser, the steps are nice and simple.
Open your Opera History by clicking the clock icon on the side menu, or by clicking History > Show All History from the top menu. You can also use the keyboard shortcut Shift + Cmd + H .
Click on the Clear Browsing Data button. You’ll be brought to Opera’s Settings in a new tab, where you’ll find the Clear browsing data window open.
Go to the Advanced tab. As with most of the browsers above, set the Time Range dropdown to All time to clear everything, and check the boxes beside Cookies and other site data and Cached images and files .
You can select these boxes under the Basic tab as well, but going into Advanced guarantees you’re not clearing other things along with the caches and cookies. You may want to preserve your download history and passwords, after all.
When you’re sure you’re only clearing cookies and caches, click the Clear data button. The clearing will all get done, and you’ll be good to go with a slightly more effective browser.
Clear the Caches and Cookies on Your Browser With Ease
Periodically clearing the caches and cookies on your Mac’s internet browsers is good to do, because even if it makes some webpages slower to access at first, it ultimately frees up storage space and gets rid of data your Mac and browsers don’t need anymore.
We hope the steps we’ve outlined above help you clear your own internet caches and cookies on whatever browser you choose to use. Most browsers make it a pretty simple process, and that should help you do it fairly often, so your Mac is never overburdened with data it barely utilizes.

- If you’re using a web browser on a Windows computer , press Ctrl+Shift+Delete. This should bring up your browser settings for "Clear browsing data." Select all of the options you want (cookies, site data, browser history, etc.) and then hit "Clear Data” or "Accept."
- If you’re using a Mac computer , hit Command+Shift+Delete to open the settings for clearing cache and browsing data. Select the time range and kind of data you want to delete, and then hit "Ok."
If these keyboard shortcuts don’t work (or you’re using a cell phone, tablet, or other device), you may need to take other steps to clear cache and browser history. We’ll go over how to do this on all of the major web browsers below.

To clear your internet browsing history and your cache on a phone, you’ll need to go into the settings and find the browser app that you use. In the settings for the browser, there should be an option to "Clear History and Website Data” or "Clear Cache."
Select the option and follow the instructions to delete the data.
Why you need to clear your browser cookies and cache
Clearing your internet browsing data isn’t just about keeping your search history private from other people who use your computer (though it’s also about that).
Every time you visit a website, your computer stores information about that site locally. This can make your browsing experience faster and easier, especially when you return to sites you’ve used before. Without saved cookies and other data, you’d have to sign into all your accounts every time you visit the site, and your cart on shopping sites would always be empty.
But if you never delete your internet cache, it can start to bog down your internet browser. Sometimes, old data can make a website operate incorrectly on your browser (especially if that site has been updated recently). It can also expose you to certain privacy issues .
Most people will want to clear their browsing cache and cookies at least once a month to keep their computer running efficiently and securely.
The best way to stay secure and protect your privacy online is with a VPN
Clearing your cache and browser history is important, but if you really want to stay secure as you browse the web, you should consider purchasing a VPN . VPN services allow you to browse the web anonymously and have other features that protect you from hackers, viruses, and trackers.
