Chiefs' Marquez Valdes-Scantling says having to travel to Germany for Week 9 game vs. Dolphins 'sucks'

Instead of playing the Miami Dolphins at home, the Kansas City Chiefs will face them across the pond in Frankfurt, Germany on Sunday as part of the NFL's annual International Series. 

Many have openly wondered why such a big matchup will be played overseas. Regardless of the reason why, Chiefs veteran receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling isn't a fan of the travel associated with playing an international game.  

"Yeah, it sucks," he said during a one-on-one interview with CBS Sports. "I mean, obviously it sucks that we have to travel nine hours for a home game when Arrowhead is right down the street. But obviously we do have other fans that are all over the world, not just in the United States. So it gives them the opportunity to see some of their favorite players play. 

"I know we've got a lot of fans over in Germany, so I'm grateful that we get to give them that opportunity. But it does suck for the players to have to be away from their families, or (I've) got to find a babysitter for my dogs for a couple days. Things that we've got to take into account. But past that, it is what it is."

While the game gives fans in Frankfurt the chance to see an NFL game in person, it doesn't sound like the Chiefs will get much of a chance to experience Frankfurt. 

"I think it's going to be mostly business," Valdes-Scantling said of the trip. "We're leaving Thursday after practice. We'll probably get there Friday morning, and then we'll probably have practice when we land. The only free time will probably be Friday after we get done with work. Obviously, Saturday is the day before the game so we're doing all our final preps for the game."

The Dolphins appear to be taking a different approach. While the Chiefs were departing for Germany on Thursday, Miami arrived in Frankfurt on Tuesday morning. The reason for the Dolphins' early arrival was Miami coach Mike McDaniel's desire to have his players spend some time not thinking about football. 

Location aside, Sunday is a big game for both teams. Miami (6-2) is currently just behind Kansas City (6-2) in the AFC standings following the Dolphins' win over the Patriots last Sunday and the Chiefs' surprising loss to the Broncos in Denver. 

No one should be surprised if Valdes-Scantling makes his presence felt in a big way on Sunday. Some of the six-year veteran's best games have come on the NFL's brightest stages. As a member of the Packers , Valdes-Scantling recorded 115 receiving yards and a score in the 2020 NFC title game. Last January, he caught a critical touchdown pass in the Chiefs' AFC Championship Game win over the Bengals . 

"It's just opportunities," Valdes-Scantling said of his ability to step up in big moments. "I don't take anything for granted. With football, we've been doing this thing for so long. I know I have been playing since I was a little kid. So it's no different no matter what the stage is. I don't look at it any different. … I look at all those games the same, never get too high, never get too low. 

"I think that's kind of been my motto with life, and that's kind of how I've stayed even keel. … One of my college coaches told me this saying and it's kind of stuck with me: 'It's never as good as it is and it's never as bad as it seems.' That's just how I've always kind of operated my life it's kind of helped me out to be where I'm at now." 

Valdes-Scantling and his teammates will be taking one comfort from home with them to Germany. Charmin recently sent the team their new toilet paper, Ultra Soft Smooth Tear , ahead of this weekend's upcoming game. 

"Charmin's getting me right for my trip over to Germany," Valdes-Scantling said. "Just keeping my routine the same with their Ultra Soft Smooth Tear toilet paper. Going over to a different part of the world that you've never seen before, you just never know what to expect. Being able to have Charmin bless me with that and keeping my routine the same, I'm grateful that we've partnered up and I'm excited about that."

Kristin Kosyluk, PhD , an assistant professor in the Department of Mental Health Law and Policy, and Alexandra Albizu-Jacob, MPH, a CBCS doctoral student, traveled to Ulm University in Germany to meet with other scholars doing work on a strategic disclosure intervention to reduce mental illness stigma. Kosyluk (PI) and co-PI Jerome Galea, PhD, MSW, LCSW , received CBCS Internal Grant Program funding to adapt a strategic disclosure stigma reduction intervention called Honest, Open, Proud (or Up To Me) for chatbot delivery. Kosyluk and Albizu-Jacob presented on the preliminary feasibility, acceptability, and efficacy of their chatbot for the Technology Subcommittee for the International Honest, Open, Proud Steering Committee.

Albizu-Jacob serves as the graduate research assistant and project coordinator on this grant. The team’s chatbot has been developed using human-centered design strategies.

Kosyluk serves as chair on the Technology Subcommittee for the International Honest, Open, Proud Steering Committee. She also presented on work that she is doing to adapt the intervention for HIV disclosure deliberation and stigma reduction. She is collaborating with Galea, Tiffany Chenneville, PhD, EdS , Kemesha Gabbidon, PhD, MPH , Molly Franke, SD , and Renato Errea, MD, MMSc on this project.

Patriots Might Not Be At Disadvantage In Germany Game Vs. Colts

How new england fares on the field will be a different story.

The Patriots quickly will have to move on from their loss to the Washington Commanders on Sunday and prepare for a trip to Germany, but New England will take its time before heading off on a flight to Frankfurt.

Head coach Bill Belichick confirmed Monday morning the Patriots will travel to Germany after Thursday’s practice and expect to arrive in Frankfurt on Friday morning.

New England has not participated in an International Series game since 2017 in Mexico City, and it hasn’t played in Europe since 2012 when it played in London.

Teams have different strategies for dealing with jet lag, as some decide to travel internationally early in the week. A correct answer hasn’t really been determined, but there was a section of Patriots fans who felt concerned a late arrival to Germany would disadvantage the team against the Colts .

However, Indianapolis head coach Shane Steichen told reporters last week his team will leave for Germany on Thursday, per 1075 The Fan’s Kevin Bowen. Steichen seemed to reaffirm that plan after the Colts beat the Carolina Panthers on Sunday when he told his team postgame he would see them Wednesday. AtoZ Sports’ Destin Adams confirmed the team will practice Wednesday and have a walkthrough Thursday.

The Patriots and Colts are expected to arrive in Germany around the same time, so there won’t be an advantage when it comes to dealing with jet lag or any other issues with international travel.

However, the on-field product is a different story with New England coming off another deflating loss , Mac Jones possibly losing faith in the team and ownership seemingly not believing in the team’s talent.

There will be a lot to sort through this week before New England plays Indianapolis at Frankfurt Stadium that could set in stone where the team progresses moving forward.

Chiefs fly Airbus A350, ‘Rosie Lee,’ from Kansas City to Frankfurt

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Chiefs boarded a special airplane late Thursday and early Friday morning for their ride across the Atlantic Ocean to Frankfurt, Germany.

The team is set to play the Miami Dolphins at 8:30 a.m. Sunday from Deutsche Bank Park in Frankfurt.

While the Dolphins arrived much earlier this week, Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said his club was approaching the game as a road game, even if the trip was a little bit longer than normal.

The team boarded a Virgin Atlantic Airbus A350-1000, nicknamed “ Rosie Lee ” and took off just before 8 p.m. Thursday from Kansas City International Airport.

Nearly eight hours and nearly 5,000 miles later, the team arrived at Frankfurt International Airport just before 10 a.m. local time.

The Chiefs normally fly a Boeing 777-200 to get to road games in the United States. The Dolphins flew on a Boeing 747-400 to get from Fort Lauderdale International Airport to Frankfurt.

Reid was among those who spoke to reporters around 5 p.m. local time (11 a.m. in Kansas City) after the team conducted a practice Friday afternoon.

“Every team is different in how they go about it,” Reid said. “The Dolphins came over earlier because they believe in it."

He continued, “The only reason that we came over today, or yesterday - which ended up being today - is that I’ve done that a couple different times and the guys seem to respond to it.”

“The plane ride was amazing,” Chiefs defensive lineman Chris Jones said Friday in Frankfurt. “We got to put the coaches in the back of the plane and they let us sit up front and take up all the seats.”

Reid said staying hydrated and getting some rest during the flight would be key for the team’s performance.

The aircraft itself might have helped too. The A350-1000 was built using composite materials that allow pilots to set the cabin pressure at a lower altitude.

Instead of creating an altitude inside the cabin of 8,000 feet like older aircraft, the A350 allows pilots to set the cabin altitude as low as 5,500. That combined with the aircraft being quieter can give passengers a more pleasant experience that limits jet lag .

“We had a really nice plane setup,” Chiefs place kicker Harrison Butker said. “I think a lot of us got some good sleep.”

Chiefs Kingdom is getting ready to set up an embassy in Germany.

Dozens of Kansas City Chiefs fans got a big send-off from their team Wednesday as they departed from the Kansas City International Airport for the team's Week 9 game against the Miami Dolphins in Frankfurt.

With all of the balloons, pomp and circumstance going on at the gate, you would be forgiven for thinking the Chiefs themselves were flying out.

Instead, it was a send-off for Chief superfans.

The party in the middle of an airport terminal was complete with drummers, dancing cheerleaders, and even KC Wolf.

Some fans at the gate told KMBC that they had been saving since the moment the game was first announced . For some fans, this trip is the perfect vacation and an excuse to follow their favorite team overseas.

The celebration was nice, but fans said nothing would beat the chance to watch the Chiefs beat the Dolphins on Sunday.

Chiefs fans who aren't able to get out of the metro still have options if they want to celebrate the NFL International Series matchup.

The game kicks off at 8:30 a.m. Kansas City time this Sunday.

An NFL game will be played in Germany this weekend for just the second time in history.

The league traveled to the country for the first time last year when the Tampa Bay Buccaneers beat the Seattle Seahawks – this Sunday, fans may be getting a preview of the AFC Championship when the Kansas City Chiefs take on the Miami Dolphins.

The NFL first took teams overseas in 2007 and has played at least one contest in London every year since then, and at least two from 2013, with the exception of 2020.

However, one player flying over the Atlantic this week isn't thrilled about it.

Marquez Valdez-Scantling understands why the trip is being made, but it sounds like he'd prefer to stay within a reasonable plane ride.

"Yeah, it sucks. I mean, obviously it sucks that we have to travel nine hours for a home game when Arrowhead is right down the street," Valdez-Scantling told CBS Sports. "But obviously we do have other fans that are all over the world, not just in the United States. So it gives them the opportunity to see some of their favorite players play.

"I know we've got a lot of fans over in Germany, so I'm grateful that we get to give them that opportunity. But it does suck for the players to have to be away from their families, or (I've) got to find a babysitter for my dogs for a couple days. Things that we've got to take into account. But past that, it is what it is."

Valdez-Scantling also said the Chiefs will hardly have any time to explore the foreign country, and they'll be treating the trip as business as usual.

"I think it's going to be mostly business. We're leaving Thursday after practice. We'll probably get there Friday morning, and then we'll probably have practice when we land," he said. "The only free time will probably be Friday after we get done with work. Obviously, Saturday is the day before the game so we're doing all our final preps for the game."

Both teams enter the contest at 6-2 – Kansas City snapped a six-game winning streak this past weekend with their loss to the Denver Broncos, while Miami is coming off a 31-17 win over the New England Patriots.
