Maybe it’s been a while since you’ve spent some quality time with Him; take advantage of this unique opportunity. And take it at your leisure. There are ten suggested prayer prompts to use as focal points for your time of prayer. Feel free to tackle one of them each day over the next ten days. Invite others to work through them as well. And don’t limit these suggestions to a ten-day period.

Your life was a journey from the moment you were born. From birth to death. From Bethlehem's stable to Calvary's cross. How often we fail to understand, that the conclusion of your journey was inevitable, that you understood this from the very beginning, and yet still walked the path that was yours to take. By comparison the many choices we make in our life seem trivial, the twists and turns we choose are often taken on impulse, with no clear comprehension of the outcome. Thank you, Jesus. Thank you that you loved humankind enough to make that journey, even as you felt the pain of rejection, the pain of the lashes, the pain of the nails, the pain of the cross.

Our walk with God is never a lonely walk, it is a family occasion, if taken in the company of God's children. If we lag behind, there are those who will turn and offer words of encouragement, hold out a hand and offer assistance over stiles and other obstacles, share refreshment, help us from our knees when we stumble. Our walk with God is never a lonely walk. It is a joyful experience, as along the path others join us, attracted by the company of God's children, singing the same songs of praise that angels sing, following a path worn down by tears and joy, and sacrifice. Our walk with God is never a lonely walk, for he walks with us, on a track that leads to a glorious destination.

For each step that I might take, Be my guide, O Lord of life. For each load that I might bear, Be my strength, O Lord of life. For each mountain I might face, Be my power, O Lord of life. Pope Francis greeted pilgrims and visitors in Saint Peter's Square on Wednesday, November 1st, the Solemnity of All Saints. Before leading the recitation of the midday Angelus prayer, the Pope said that on All Saints Day we remember our call to holiness. He explained how it is a gift from God that we embrace and a journey we embark upon together, with the Saints accompanying us always along the way.

The gift of holiness

The Pope explained how the gift of holiness has come with our baptism and we need to nurture it so that it can grow and transform our lives. The Saints started out like us, the Pope pointed out, receiving the same gift we have received, and they are our friends who are very close to us, accompanying us on our journey.

We have certainly encountered some saints in our daily lives, the Pope remarked, a just person who lives out the Christian vocation with commitment and simplicity, people he likes to call "the saints next door." And holiness is a gift offered to all for "a happy life."

“When we receive a gift, what is our first reaction? It is precisely that we are happy, because it means that someone loves us; and the gift of holiness makes us happy because God loves us.”

Welcoming holiness

As with any gift, when we choose to accept it and show our gratitude, the Pope explained, when we welcome God's gift of holiness, we take on a responsibility to maintain and build on the holiness we have received.

A journey in good company

“Holiness is also a journey, a journey to be made together, helping each other, united with those excellent companions who are the Saints.”

The Pope emphasized how the Saints are "our elder brothers and sisters, on whom we can always count," as they can help us when we make mistakes and get on the right path again, like "sincere friends, whom we can trust because they desire our wellbeing."

Their lives and witness in faith provide us with inspiration, the Pope said, and "in their prayers, we receive help" and united with them we embrace one another in "a bond of brotherly love."

Lives of the Saints

In conclusion, the Pope encouraged everyone to know more about the lives of the Saints and learn from them how to face their own challenges in life. He also suggested personal reflection by remembering that in receiving the gift of the Holy Spirit we are called to holiness and always sustained and helped along the way. And the Saints are close to us, we can turn to them in prayer, in communion with them in our gratitude to God for all He has given us and the eternal happiness He calls us to.

What is the Angelus

The Angelus is a special prayer recited by Catholics three times a day, at 6am, noon, and 6pm and is accompanied by the ringing of the Angelus bell. The name comes from the Latin word for Angel and the prayer itself reminds us of how Jesus Christ assumed our human nature through the Mystery of the Incarnation. The Pope recites the Angelus prayer in St Peter’s Square every Sunday at midday. He also gives a brief reflection on the Gospel of the day and often comments on some issue of international concern. The Pope’s words are broadcast all over the world on radio and television and widely shared on social media. From Easter to Pentecost the Regina Coeli is prayed instead of the Angelus. On All Saints’ Day, Pope Francis says holiness is ‘a gift and a journey’

Pope Francis on Wednesday told pilgrims in St. Peter’s Square that holiness is both a “gift” from God and a “journey” to which we must “commit” ourselves after we’ve received it.

The Holy Father delivered the remarks from the Apostolic Palace prior to a special recitation of the Angelus for the Nov. 1 solemnity of All Saints. The pope asked attendees to consider holiness in light of the feast day.

Holiness is “a gift, you can’t buy it,” Francis said. “And at the same time, it’s a journey. A gift and a journey.”

“Holiness is a gift of God, which we’ve received at baptism. And if we let it grow, it can completely change our lives,” he said.

The saints, the pope noted, “are not heroes who are unreachable or distant. They’re people like us, our friends, whose starting point is the same gift that we’ve received: baptism.”

“Holiness is a gift offered to everyone for a happy life,” the pope said. “After all, when we receive a gift, what’s our first reaction? It’s precisely that we’re happy, because it means that someone loves us. A gift of holiness makes us happy. It shows us how God loves us.”

But “every gift must be accepted, welcomed,” the pope said. And a gift “carries with it the responsibility of a response.” Holiness is “an invitation to commit ourselves,” Francis said, so that we do not squander the gift from God.

Holiness, the pope argued, is also “a journey. A journey to be made together, helping each other, united with those great companions, who are the saints.”

“They’re our elder brothers and sisters on whom we can always count,” he said. “The saints support us, and when we take a wrong turn along the way, with their silent presence, they never fail to correct us.”

The pope urged visitors to ask themselves several questions regarding receiving the gift of holiness: “Do I remember having received the gift of the Holy Spirit, who calls me to holiness and helps me to arrive there? Do I thank the Holy Spirit for this gift? Do I feel that the saints are close to me? Do I turn to them? Do I know the history of some of them?”

“May Mary, Queen of All Saints, help us feel the joy of the gift received and increase in us the desire for our eternal destination,” he said.

After the recitation of the Angelus, the pope noted that on Thursday he would be celebrating Mass at the nearby commonwealth war cemetery in Rome, in which are buried numerous soldiers who died in World War II.

“Let’s continue to pray for all those suffering from the wars of today,” Francis said. “We remember suffering Ukraine, suffering Palestine, suffering Israel. Let’s remember all the other parts of the world where war is happening.”

Traveling for the holidays can bring a lot of worry and anxiety. What if we break down? What if we get a flat tire? What if we get stranded outside of nowhere? What if we get lost? Even with all our modern conveniences like cell phones, GPS and services like Onstar, anxiety can still set in. Still, we need to trust above all else, that the Lord will keep us safe. Here are some verses to keep in mind when the worry and anxiety of traveling get to be too much.

So the Lord provided someone to rescue the Israelites from the Arameans. Then Israel lived in safety again, as they had in former days. 2 Kings 13:5 (NLT)

We shall start out on our road trips like we do any other journey in life, trusting the Lord to lead us, guide us, and keep us safe. With him, we can never be lost, and we’ll always find our way back home.

“ Prayer for Journeying Together ” was composed for Journeying Together: A National Intercultural Encounter for Ministries with Youth and Young Adults, hosted by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, Committee on Cultural Diversity in the Church with the Secretariats of Catholic Education and of Laity, Marriage, Family Life and Youth, in collaboration with the National Federation for Catholic Youth Ministry and the National Dialogue on Catholic Pastoral Ministry with Youth and Young Adults.

The prayer could be used during any gathering of participants, on-site or on-line, in preparation for the national gathering to be held in the Summer of 2021.
It could be prayed at any point during the gathering: e.g., as an opening prayer or as a concluding prayer.
In the second, third, fourth, and fifth stanzas, there is the option of replacing the second evocation to God with any other language. Several language options are listed above, but feel free to add your own, depending on your local context.
Worship participants could choose to either recite the non-English titles to God together (i.e., in unity) or have a representative from the cultural community recite the entire first line (or entire stanza) alone. If you choose the former option, make sure to go over all pronunciations before the start of the prayer.

Traveling can be a scary reality for many of us because there’s always the possibility of meeting with an accident when we embark on a journey.

Whether you’re taking a road trip, a family vacation, or simply taking a trip to visit a loved one, there’s hardly a guarantee for safety.

Prayer for Safe Family Trip.

2 Samuel 23: 5 (NIV) – Is not my house right with God? Has he not made me an everlasting covenant, arranged and secured in every part? Will he not bring into fruition my salvation and grant me my every desire.

Almighty and Everlasting God, thank you for the gift of family and for the time you have given us together. As we travel together today, cause us to be mindful of your presence. Please help us know that you are always with us to guide and guard us.

Protect us as we travel and keep us safe from every danger in our path. In all, let your watchful eyes be upon us to keep us protected in the shelter of your arms.

Psalm 91:11 (NIV) – For he will command his angels concerning you, to guard you in all your ways.

Heavenly Father, you know how terrifying I find traveling by air. I’m always nervous whenever I have to use airplanes. So I ask that you give me peace in this journey. Remind me of your promises and let your word quieten the voice of the fear in my head.

Please help me see the gift you have given us with the invention of airplanes. So I can look beyond my fears and appreciate the miracle of flying.

Lord, I place myself in the hollow of your hands. Calm my fear and the fears of other passengers like me. Bless the flight attendants and bless those in the cockpit. Direct their actions and give them wisdom where they need it most.

Prayer for Safe Mission Trip.

Romans 10;15 (NIV) – And how can they preach unless they are sent? As it is written, How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news.

Abba Father, you have commanded us to preach the gospel to all nations. In obedience to your word, we embark on this mission trip. We are not sending ourselves; instead, we are going because you are sending us. Therefore, lead us safely as we go about doing your work.

You have called us away from our homes; therefore, prosper your work in our hands. We pray for protection over us. Protect us and bless every step we take in obedience to your word.

Most importantly, may doors that have resisted the gospel before now be opened to us.

Prayer for Safe Sea Travel.

Psalm 32:6 (NIV) – Therefore let everyone who is godly pray to you while you may be found; surely when the mighty waters rise, they will not reach him.

Merciful God, thank you because I know that you have given your angels charge over me. Let them accompany me on this journey as we set out, even till we arrive at our destination. By the authority in the name of your son Jesus, I speak calm over the sea; and I decree by faith that there shall be no loss of life or property on this journey.

Dear Father, let your hand of mercy rest upon us as we sail. I pray that you give wisdom and insight to the sailor and captain. Direct them aright that our lives may be preserved in this voyage.

Thank you because your covering is upon us, and we will not be victims of sea accidents.

Prayer for Safe Travel Back Home.

Psalm 32:8 (NIV) – I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you and watch over you.

Faithful Father, thank you for leading me safely on my journey here. As I return, I ask that your mercy will lead me back home. You have preserved me throughout my stay here and have kept a constant watch over my family in my absence.

Now please go before me and avert every evil in my way so that I may arrive home safely to the praise of your name.

Psalm 121: 7-8 (NIV) – The Lord will keep you from all harm – he will watch over your life; the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.

Good Shepherd, you are a God who sees the future and has control of the world in your hands. Therefore, I pray that you will go before my husband on this trip. Be the captain on this journey and lead him to safety.

Lord, your eyes are upon the righteous to keep them safe wherever they go. So I request that you sustain and keep him in your mercy.

Prayer for Safe Travel for Students.

Proverbs 16:9 (NIV) – In his heart, a man plans his course, but the Lord determines his steps.

Loving Father, you are our source and sustained. Thank you for the academic excellence you have made possible in our lives. I also thank you for blessing the plans of our hearts and for causing us to flourish in all our academic pursuits.

As we embark on this journey, be our protector. May we be free from all harm and uphold us by your grace when we are tired.

We always forget the readiness of the Lord to help us. This is the reason we are always anxious about our lives and safety. So we must learn to pray about every aspect of our lives and trust in the ability of the Lord to save us.

4 Prayers for Safe Travels and Journeys

As we have the ability to move from place to place easily by car, plane or train for business or pleasure, we may think traveling is a modern-day phenomenon. However, a closer look at Scripture shows us that travel and journeys are major themes in the Bible. Throughout both the Old and News Testaments, individuals such as Abram, Jesus and Paul, for example, regularly traveled.

We can learn much from Scripture for our journeying, whether for pleasure or purpose. In particular, the theme of travel and journeys can be applied to our spiritual lives as the Bible has much to say about our spiritual journeying.

Use the prayers below for your physical journeys, but also for the spiritual journeys of yourself and others.

Preparation for the Journey

The Hebrew verb nasa can mean to set out on the beginning of a journey. The verb is used primarily in this way in the Pentateuch , the first five books of the Bible. It refers to the journey of the Israelites — the start of their journey from Egypt, and the different stages of the journey when the pillar of cloud or fire indicated they should move on.

Most of us have time to prepare before we set out on a journey. But the picture of the Israelites waiting in Egypt for Pharaoh to let them go is of suddenly leaving with no preparation. Exodus 12:39 says: “...they had been driven out of Egypt and did not have time to prepare food for themselves.”

Numbers 33 outlines the stages of the Israelites journey and the 42 times they packed up camp and set out again. It may be hard to imagine what it was like to pack up all one’s belongings — deciding what to take or leave behind, organize children, round up animals, pack food and water, and not be too exhausted to leave at the allotted time. They even had an alarm to get them going ( Numbers 10:2-6 )! We often find packing a suitcase for a few days to be tiring, and need to set an alarm when our journeys begin early.

Maybe you have never had to leave on a journey without any preparation, although perhaps at short notice. Or perhaps the only time you have had to pack up everything is to move house. Many people in our world have to set out with no preparation and leave everything behind. In particular, we think about those who flee because of war.

In all these situations, whether you are preparing for a pleasant journey, or have to suddenly leave because of dire circumstances, you can be reminded that God is watching over you as with the Israelites ( Exodus 12:42 ). This prayer is for you.

I thank You for watching over me as I prepare for all my journeys whether it is to take a vacation, travel for business, move house, or one which is thrust upon me unexpectedly. Thank You for Your constant vigil while I sleep, when I awake, and as I pack my suitcases. Give me the strength to prepare well for my journeys. When I feel fraught and tired, help me to stay calm knowing that You care for me.

Heavenly Father, I ask You to watch over men, women, and children who have to flee their homes with no preparation — those who are running away from harsh situations and from war, just like the Israelites had to run away from Egypt. I thank You that I can choose what to put in my suitcase, but I pray for those who have to put their whole lives in a suitcase, choosing what to take and what to leave behind. I ask You to care for these people who are destitute.

The Route for the Journey

The word for “road” or “way” in both the Old Testament ( derek ) and New Testament ( hodos ) can refer to a physical road ( Numbers 21:4 , Matthew 21:8 ) but also figuratively to the actions of a person and the direction they are taking.

In Deuteronomy, the Israelites were instructed to walk in the ways ( derek ) of the Lord ( Deuteronomy 10:12 ; 11:22; 19:9). Jesus used the word hodos in the following verse “I am the way ( hodos ) and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” ( John 14:6 ).

We usually do not set out on a journey without knowing the way we are going — having directions, planning the route, purchasing tickets, or other details. Even though we are careful in planning our journeys, they often come with obstacles. Delayed flights, inclement weather, and unwanted detours can present challenges and frustrations. It was the same in biblical times. The Israelites became impatient because they had to go around Edom ( Numbers 21:4 ). Jesus “had to go through Samaria” ( John 4:4 ), an unwanted route for most Jews who tried to avoid contact with Samaritans.

However, Jesus’ journey through Samaria gave Him the opportunity to share the truth of who he was with the woman at the well , and through her witness many more came to have faith in Jesus.

Use the prayer below as you plan your way for any physical journey you are taking and for opportunities to show the goodness of God. Pray over your spiritual journey as well. The prayer below is based on Psalm 119:26-32 . I have paraphrased it for you:

Heavenly Father,

As I plan the route of my next journey, whether for business or pleasure, I ask that each stage of the trip will go smoothly so I can get to my destination easily. When it does not, help me not to get frustrated and annoyed, but to see the opportunities you have given me to show Your goodness and kindness, just as Jesus did.

Lord God, just as I carefully plan the physical routes for any journey I am taking, teach me the importance of being intentional with Your ways for my life. Help me to understand Your instructions so I can meditate on and follow Your wonderful teachings. Keep me from going the wrong way, or making wrong decisions. In Your goodness, gently guide me. Today, I choose to be obedient and faithfully follow You.

The Journey

Journeys such as road trips, flights, train rides, and more often give the opportunity to talk and share with those with whom we are traveling, and with strangers. They also provide teaching moments, especially for children. Deuteronomy 11:19 says we are to teach God’s words to our children “when you walk along the road...” Our trips provide a chance to focus on and speak about spiritual things, but not just with children.

Jesus took the occasions of journeys to instruct his disciples and others during his ministry and after his resurrection . In particular, we are reminded of Jesus walking with the two disciples on the road to Emmaus as He “explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself” ( Luke 24:13-32 ). There are many other occasions, too, when Jesus used His travels for instruction — not limited to Mark 2:23-28 , Mark 9:30-34 , Luke 19:1-6 .

Journeys also present the opportunity to show compassion and love to others, as with the parable of the Good Samaritan ( Luke 10:25-37 ).

Use this prayer for your upcoming journey, to look for chances to show kindness to others, to share the Gospel and your faith with family or friends traveling with you, and even with strangers you meet.

Help me to see the journeys I take as opportunities to show kindness, compassion, and Your mercy, just as Jesus did. I want to bring glory to You by sharing, encouraging, and teaching about Your love and goodness. Give me the chance to talk about what You have done for me and in my life. Help me to share my testimony and my faith with those I am in the car with, sit next to on the plane, and walk with on the road.

I thank You for the example of Jesus, who did so much of His teaching and healing while He was on journeys. Thank you that it is not just about the destination, but all that we can experience on the way. Just as You have walked with those through history who placed their trust in You, be with me and those I am traveling with today.

The Destination

When we travel and arrive at our destinations we are, in a sense, sojourners. We make a temporary stay in places that are foreign to us, whether they are other countries or different areas of our own country.

To sojourn is a familiar theme throughout the Bible from the Old Testament to the New Testament. Abraham, for example, was a sojourner when he lived in Canaan. He sojourned in other places too: Egypt due to the famine ( Genesis 12:10 ), Gerar ( Genesis 20:1 ), and the land of the Philistines ( Genesis 21:34 ).

All of God’s people were sojourners until they arrived in the Promised Land . Then God reminded them to respect the sojourners among them because they were once foreigners ( Exodus 23:9 , Deuteronomy 10:19 , Leviticus 19:33 ).

Jesus, too, lived like a sojourner when on this earth. He said: “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head” ( Matthew 8:20 ). He also relied on the hospitality of others to provide a bed and food for him.

The Bible tells us we are foreigners when we don’t know Christ, but as Christians, we have become members of God’s household ( Ephesians 2:11-19 ). Even though we are considered strangers in this world ( Hebrews 11:13 , 1 Peter 2:11 ), we are to treat non-Christians well.

As you travel and take up temporary residence in different places, pray that you will be given good treatment and that, likewise, you can show God’s love and goodness to those who are strangers in your own communities and homes.

As I think about temporarily staying in another country, area, or someone’s home, not only do I hope to be treated well, but help me to be respectful to those around me who have different customs and behaviors than myself. I want to be a good witness for You in the way I behave, the actions I take, and the words I say. I also ask for Your continued protection and safety, remembering that Your concern for sojourners was not just for biblical times, but it extends to me today. Keep me and my traveling companions safe. May we be shown the hospitality that we want to extend to those who come into our homes or into our communities and country.

Prayer For A Journey

I come before you Father God and confess my fears about traveling. I confess my insecurities about connections and times, My concerns for my safety and security, And my anxieties around this journey. I come to lay these things down and choose to put my trust in you. My faith will rise up and lead me through. My hopes will find light as I praise your name. My love will remain strong and firm holding me steady. My peace will be your peace, one that surpasses all these worries. You are with me. I am safe with you. Thank you. Amen.

Isra Miraj is one of the most notable events in the religious history of Islam, in which Isra and Miraj are two chapters of the night journey taken by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) around the year 621. Certain events that took place during Isra and Miraj are explained in brief in the Quran.

The Story of Isra and Miraj

In Isra – the first part of the night, Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) journey began when he was in the Great Mosque in Makkah where angel Jibreel and angel Mikal came to him and brought Buraq (a creature in Islamic tradition said to be a transport for certain prophets). The Prophet travelled to Al-Aqsa Mosque in Buraq within a second. Anas Ibn Malik narrates that angel Jibreel offered Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) a glass of milk and a glass of wine, setting eyes on what he would choose. The Prophet drank milk which resulted in passing the special test as he chose the drink that was healthy and pure for him rather than the one that is prohibited on earth.

What is Sidrat-Al-Muntaha?

It is a huge Sidr tree as well as the end of the seventh heaven. According to Islamic beliefs, this is the boundary no one ever passed except Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) along with angel Jibreel. This is where Allah told Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) that Muslim believers were to enrol in prayers 50 times a day. The Prophet accepted the offer but as he was going back to the earth, he met Prophet Moses who advised that 50 prayers were too much for a day. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) went back to Allah and requested to reduce 50 prayers as it was too much. Allah reduced 5 prayers and made it 45 prayers a day. But according to Prophet Moses, it was still too much. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) took nine trips between Moses and Almighty Allah and after that, it was finally reduced to 5 times prayers a day. Prophet Moses continued to ask for the reduction in numbers, but Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said that he was too guilt-ridden. Moreover, he is grateful for 5 prayers a day.

What is Mehraj-Ul-Alam?

Celebrated on the 27th of Rajab, Mehraj-Ul-Alam is a Muslim holiday in the event of Isra and Miraj. It is also known by the name Lailat-Al-Miraj. It is recognised as the day when Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) ascended to all the seven stages of heaven. It is believed that this was the day when an angel visited and Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) chest was opened and it was purified with Zamzam water. Later his heart was filled with sagacity and belief. The day is celebrated differently by various Muslim countries. Muslims do not fast on this day since the exact day is not known. Some choose to offer prayers during the night while some light up electric lights and candles. Food and treats are served after Salah (prayers performed by the Muslims).

Isra Miraj Hadith

Anas ibn Malik reported: Fifty prayers were obligated upon the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, when he was taken on his night journey. Then, it was reduced until it was set at five and an announcement was made, “O Muhammad, My word is never changed, so these five prayers will be counted as fifty.” Source: Sunan al-Tirmidhī 213

Ibn Mas’ud reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “I met Abraham on the night of my Ascension and he said: O Muhammad, greet your nation with peace from me. Tell them Paradise has pure soil and delicious water, that it is a level plain and its plants grow with declarations of the glory of Allah, the praise of Allah, the oneness of Allah, and the greatness of Allah.” Source: Sunan al-Tirmidhī 3462

Abu Huraira reported: On the night of the Ascension, the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, was presented with two vessels, one full of wine and the other full of milk. The Prophet looked at them both and he chose the vessel full of milk. The Angel Gabriel, upon him be peace, said, “All praise is due to Allah who has guided you to that which is natural, for had you selected the wine your nation would have been led astray.” Source: Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 4432, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 168

Anas ibn Malik reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “I passed by Moses during my night journey near the red mound; he was praying in his grave.” Source: Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 2375

Malik ibn Sa’sa’ah reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, told them about his Night Journey, saying, “We ascended until we reached the second heaven where Gabriel asked for the gate to be opened, but it was said: Who is it? Gabriel said: I am Gabriel. It was said: Who is with you? Gabriel said: It is Muhammad. It was said: Has he been called? Gabriel said yes. When we reached beyond the second heaven, I saw John and Jesus who are cousins. Gabriel said: These are John and Jesus, so greet them with peace. I greeted them with peace and they returned my greeting, saying: Welcome, O righteous brother and prophet.” Source: Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 3247, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 164

The Lord’s Prayer: Teach Us to Pray

"Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one." For centuries, believers have memorized and used the Lord's prayer as a tool for going to God in prayer. It was given by Jesus in response to his disciple's request for a lesson in prayer. It continues to be a lesson for us as well.

One of the great realities of being human is prayer. Study after study has found that people, often even those who claim no belief in God, routinely pray to Him. We can’t seem to help ourselves. Perhaps it’s only for a moment in a desperate plea for help, or in a heartbroken petition of loss, or just humble thanks on a sunny and warm afternoon walk when everything feels right. Prayer just slips out.

But Jesus’s disciples recognized something profoundly different about how he prayed. It wasn’t the occasional and casual request, but neither was it like those long and complicated public prayers of the religious elite. Jesus was constantly praying, but in the most humble and yet intimate ways any of them had seen.

His prayers so moved them that they asked Jesus to teach them how to pray as he did. What Jesus offered them was The Lord’s Prayer, a prayer generations of believers have dedicated to memory and worked into the everyday moments of life.

Perhaps you too memorized it as a child or at least overheard it being prayed by a pastor or grandparent. But I’m guessing you’ve never fully realized the remarkable life-changing power of that prayer. So I want to look at it with you.

It all begins with a simple address: Jesus answered His disciples, “This, then, is how you should pray: ‘Our Father in heaven…'”

Addressing the Father

One of Jesus’s favorite ways of addressing God had always been as a father. Jesus had prayed: “Father, glorify Your name.” “Father, let this cup pass from me.” “Father, forgive them for they know not what they do.”

After all, God had called Jesus His beloved Son, in whom he was well pleased. As the Son of God, it’s no surprise to hear Jesus praying to God as His father, but how shocking it must have been for His disciples to have been invited into that relationship. Jesus told them to begin with “our father.” None of them were used to praying like that.

That depth of intimacy was not something they were used to. God was on a throne. God was in heaven. He was a god of power, and authority, and honor. Would you dare wander up to the president of the United Stated seated in his oval office and casually explain, “You know I’ve always thought of you as a kind of father figure. Do you mind if I call you dad?” You’d be crazy and probably disrespectful. But that is exactly how Jesus taught His disciples and us to pray.

Address God as your father. You are a son or a daughter.

Our culture is too casual with this idea of God’s fatherhood. It’s not uncommon to hear people explain that we are all sons and daughters of God. But that’s not how scripture describes us. We are enemies of God by our rebellion against Him. We reject Him, and we reject His place as the Creator. When the prophets of old found themselves in God’s presence, they didn’t call Him “dad;” they fell on their faces in fear and reverence.

So how do we get by calling God our father? We can do it because Jesus invites us to do it. Jesus extends an invitation for us to be in on the relationship he alone has with God.

An Invitation to Pray

Maybe the first thing you should understand about prayer is that you don’t have the first word. When you pray, you aren’t starting the conversation. You have already been invited into it. You have been given access to it. You have an invitation to talk with God as your father.

When you bow your head to pray, you are already a part of something profound and life-altering, a conversation already initiated by God Himself. God is offering you a relationship.

That realization, this opening phrase of prayer—Our father in heaven—fills you with both humility and boldness. You are humbled by realizing that you have not earned this attention but have been given it by God’s grace. And yet you are given the boldness of praying as a child, of praying as Jesus does.

You have been made a son and daughter of God.

You see, prayer is not just some desperate manipulation of God to get what you want. It isn’t some fearful obligation you do to keep Him off your back. Prayer is an invitation by God into His family. With that humility and with that boldness, you are well prepared for everything coming in this prayer.

First and foremost, Tim Cameron is a passionate follower of Christ. From there he is a husband of fifty years (Annamae) and father of five great kids (from doctors and missionary nurses to linguists), seven grandchildren, and two Chinese goddaughters.

Tim was a division-1 basketball player in college. He spent ten years working at Oral Roberts University as Director of Admissions and Financial Aid for undergraduate schools, graduate schools, and medical, dental, and law schools.

Following his tenure at ORU, Tim entered public education for fifteen years as a high school principal in the Tulsa area at schools with large enrollments. He then served for fourteen years as Headmaster at the largest private school in Oklahoma.

Tim's first book, The Forty-Day Word Fast A Spiritual Journey, is an Amazon Best Seller. His second book out with Charisma House Inc., is, 40 Days Through the Prayers of Jesus A Journey to Pray More Like Christ. And his third book is The Forty-Day Word Fast for Couples. He writes and has done guest spots on numerous Christian radio and TV programs. He spends most of his time in prayer and intercession.

Tim has served on many non-profit boards during the years. He has received many awards and held several key leadership positions in public education. He is currently a member of the Executive team of the Alumni Board of Directors at O.R.U.
