It is 31 kilometres (19 miles) from Baramulla and 49 kilometres (30 miles) from Srinagar. Gulmarg very well justifies its name, the meadows of flowers, and you will come across a lot of meadows decorated with daisies. A beautiful aspect of the meadow is the 1890s Anglican Church of St. Mary’s, which is situated on a lonely hill and accessible by a dead-end road connecting the 1965 neo-colonial Hotel Highlands Park and the famous Gulmarg Golf Club.

Most of all though, Gulmarg has the highest green golf course in the world as well as the highest cable car project. It is at a height of approximately 2,730 metres above sea level, on the bank of the flowing Sindh River. Sonmarg means a “meadow of gold”, and is one of the best tourist places in Jammu and Kashmir for sightseeing & adventure. Its landscape is marked by a glacier, forests and snow-capped mountains. The town is located in Jammu and Kashmir’s Ganderbal district, about 70 km from Srinagar International Airport. It was also the starting point for the Silk Road, which linked Kashmir to China.

This mountain is surrounded by the big Himalayan glaciers Kolahoi Glacier and Machoi Glacier, and it is the source of the famed Three Sisters of Kashmir Valley. The three Great Lakes in Kashmir: Kishansar, Vishansar and Gadsar, can be visited from here. Peaks such as Kolahoi Peak, Amarnath Peak, Machoi Peak, and Sirbal Peak tower over this lovely hill town, making Songamarg a renowned destination for adventure sports tourism. The Thajiwas range divides the Sonmarg Valley into two halves; on one side lies the fir-covered Thajiwas spur, which is popular for camping. The Thajiwas glacier, which is the main attraction of this place, is located on the other side.

Camping & trout fishing are some popular adventure activities. Sonmarg is also the starting point for the trek to Amarnath Cave , a major Hindu pilgrimage destination. However, in the winter, Sonamarg is inaccessible because of avalanches and heavy snowfall that shut the NH1D, which connects it to neighbouring locations. Except for the winter months (November to February), the climate in the area is normally suitable for tourism. It is best to visit flowery meadows between April and October to fully appreciate their splendour.

Pahalgam Jammu Kashmir

Pahalgam. Located in the Anantnag district, about 90 km away from Srinagar and it is located on the banks of the River Lidder. One of the most well-liked trekking areas is the Kolahoi Glaciers trip, which passes via the lovely settlement of Aru village, Pahalgam. Pahalgam in Kashmir Valley is a compassionate and beautiful reflection of nature. This small village is located at the intersection of two streams flowing from the beautiful Sheshnag Lake and the Lidder River and offers many breathtaking landscapes. Pahalgam is also known as the Valley of Shepherds.

Pahalgam was the location for the classic Bollywood film Betaab, starring Sunny Deol and Amrita Singh. As a result, the valley was renamed Betaab Valley. It is a visual treat with its meadows, forests and pristine environment. Aru Valley, Betab Valley and Baisaran are some of the places which make Pahalgam the best in Kashmir for a sightseeing tour. With serene meadows, clean lakes, and picturesque surroundings, you may simply stroll across the region or sit down for a picnic. Baisaran also provides activities such as pony rides and zorbing. The Gurez Valley is a stunning natural location in Jammu and Kashmir, located in the high Himalayas around 86 kilometres (53 miles) north of Srinagar and 123 kilometres (76 miles) south of Bandipore. Gurez Valley is situated at an elevation of 2400 metres above sea level and the weather is always nice here. The area is ideal for photography, tranquil picnics, and hiking adventures. The picturesque valley is surrounded by snow-capped mountains, meadows clothed with lindens, walnut and willow trees and the raging river KishanGanga. Dawar and Tilel are the two districts that make up the Gurez Valley. Dawar is also Gurez’s central settlement, and it is where all of the hotels are located.

Due to substantial snowfall of about 2 metres (7 ft) and the closure of Razdan Pass in winter, the Gurez Valley is cut off from the rest of the world for six months and also enhances its appeal as a famous tourist destination in Jammu and Kashmir. The people who live here are one of the oldest tribes in Kashmir called the Dard Shin Tribe and speak a language called Shina. Villages are also spread across the valley, providing tourists with a glimpse into the tough yet peaceful lives of the residents.

Visitors can ride the Gurez helicopter operated by the Gurez Copter Service to see the valley from a whole different perspective. Given its altitude, the valley is expected to be colder than other places. Pack a warm jacket, gloves, and extra clothing to keep yourself warm in windy conditions, especially at night. The network is difficult to discover here, and companies such as Airtel and JIO may not work at all. BSNL is one of the few service providers that provides some services, but it is also bleak.

Verinag Jammu Kashmir

Verinag is a town in the district of Anantnag, where the Verinag Spring is a must-see attraction. Verinag is a town named after the Verinag spring and the Mughal garden. Verinag, on the route to Jammu, is a spring of great importance and beauty, with deep blue water that emerges from the bottom of a high scarp of a mountain spur, and this stone basin & arcade surrounding were built by Jahangir. This spring is well-known for never drying up or overflowing.

Emperor Jahangir constructed an octagonal pavement around the spring. The Emperor was so taken with the beauty of Verinag that when he died at Chengas village near Rajouri, he requested to be buried there. And after finishing the design for the spring and the adjoining garden, he said that the traveller who travelled around the world can rarely give any example of another site of such beauty.

At this location, a tourist bungalow, a rest house, and some shelters have been built. A Mughal Garden also stands right in front of this spring. The beautiful garden next to it was built by Shah Jahan. This tourist resort is located in Tehsil Shahabad Bala, approximately 26 kilometres from Anantnag Town. The spring is the main source of the River Jhelum. The Archaeological Survey of India has designated Verinag Spring and the Mughal Arcade surrounding it as a Monument of National Importance.

According to folklore, goddess Vitasta (Jhelum) planned to take her rise from here, but when she arrived, Shiva was already here, so she had to return and take her rise from Veravurthur, a spring approximately one mile to the north-west of this location. Virah means ‘to return’ in Sanskrit, and nag signifies a water spring, therefore because Vitasta had to return from this location, it became known as Virahnag or “Vernag.”

Vaishno Devi

Those who are spiritually inclined should not miss out on visiting Vaishno Devi , a temple town, and also a major Hindu pilgrimage destination in India. The temple stands on the Trikuta Hills,13 kilometres from Katra (in Jammu and Kashmir’s union territory). The Mother Goddess, who is the main deity, is believed to fulfil the wishes of her devotees. Vaishno Devi, also known as Mata Rani, Vaishnavi, and Trikuta, is an embodiment of the Hindu Goddess Durga. Goddesses are believed to arrive at the Holy Cave during the pooja and aarti to pay their respects to Mata Rani. Vaishno Devi is known as Moonh Maangi Muradein Poori Karne Wali Mata (the mother who grants her children’s requests). This sacred site is regarded as the most important Shaktipeeth since it is believed that the Goddess Sati’s skull fell here.

Maa Vaishno Devi’s darshan in the holy cave takes the shape of three naturally formed rocks known as pindies. The goddess is represented by these pindies in three different forms: Maha Kali, Maha Saraswati, and Maha Lakshmi. Interestingly, although sharing the same source rock, all of the pindies varied in colour and texture. The delicate white rock on the extreme left is believed to be the Goddess Saraswati, the yellow-red rock in the middle represents Goddess Lakshmi and the black rock on the left represents Goddess Kali. The Pandavas of the epic Mahabharata were believed to have built the sacred cave temple. Every year, almost a million individuals visit the Vaishno Devi temple.

To reach the temple, you will have to take a trek of nearly 14 kilometres which starts from the Ban Ganga bridge. Other options are battery-operated cars, ponies, palkies and helicopter rides to Mata Vaishno Devi Temple. On the Mata Vaishno Devi pilgrimage, devotees make customary offerings to Mata of chunri (a red-coloured drape), sarees, dried fruits, silver or gold trinkets, Cholas, flowers, and so on. The route to Vaishno Devi is filled with stores that sell a range of snacks and refreshments, as well as religious souvenirs.

The Best 4 Days Itinerary for Jammu

Jammu is increasingly getting popular as a tourist destination both for domestic and international travelers. Gone are the days when this place was only known for religious tourism. In the past few years, it is being favourably considered as a weekend getaway from Delhi. Not only the national capital but people from nearby states like Punjab and Himachal Pradesh are also visiting this less promoted place. The importance of Jammu on the tourism map can be gauged from the fact that in 2018, more than 15 million people visited this region. Earlier, the only place people would pay a visit was Vaishno Devi, which is one of the most important shrines in India. However, in recent times, Jammu’s leisure tourism sector is witnessing a huge surge as people have been thronging tourist hotspots like Patnitop, Sanasar, Kishtwar, Bhaderwah, Mansar, and many others. Jammu is a perfect mix of historical and natural wealth. One who would like to explore this place in-depth may need several weeks. But if someone has a limited time schedule say for example 4 days, then the below itinerary would come handy with all major places to visit in Jammu .

Day 1: Arrival in Jammu

Jammu, also known as the City of Temples, is well connected to all major cities of India through air, rail, and road. The airport here though a small one has daily flights from major metro cities of India.  The Indian Railways also runs trains from cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru, Kolkata, etc. Jammu is also connected with Delhi, Himachal, Chandigarh, Punjab, and the rest of the country through National Highway 1A. On arriving at Jammu, there might be a list of places to visit in Jammu that you might want to explore but, here are some that we would suggest. You can explore the Bahu Fort, one of the oldest forts in Jammu, built by Raja Jambu Lochan. It also has a huge terraced garden, housing the subcontinent’s biggest underground aquarium. History lovers can then visit The Amar Mahal Palace , built in the 19th century for the Dogra King Raja Amar Singh, by a French architect on the lines of a French Chateau. Nature enthusiasts can either spend some leisure time in the Ramnagar Wildlife Sanctuary or relax in the soothing waters of Mansar Lake. While you are in Jammu city, don’t forget to savour delectable local culinary delights like rajma chawal , ambal , and gul gule . Jammu has hotels for every budget, so choosing one online won’t be a difficult task.

Day 2:  Visit Vaishno Devi, Katra

To reach Vaishno Devi Shrine , one has to either drive across the recently completed four-lane highway or take a train till Katra which is a 1-hour journey. Further, the trek to the shrine depends on the time of the day and fitness of the person. After an early morning breakfast either in Jammu or Katra, begin your journey by foot to the shrine, a trek of total 28 km. Like Jammu, there are hundreds of hotels and lodges in Katra too, who will be more than happy to welcome you for some much-needed rest and a warm meal.

Day 3/4: Patnitop and Sanasar

At a distance of 2 hours from Katra, is a less discovered but a place with immense tourism potential, called Patnitop. Bringing Patnitop even closer to Jammu and Katra is Patnitop Gondola, which is the highest ropeway in India, in terms of ground clearance. It takes between 12 – 20 minutes to reach the upper terminal at Patnitop. The breath-taking view of the lush green forests when you glide through the air in ropeway cabin is unimaginable. The gondola is part of the recently launched mountain adventure destination called Skyview Patnitop by Empyrean. There were hardly any adventure activities in Jammu previously. But now, with the development of this recreational site, Jammu/Patnitop will surely find a place in the best adventure destinations in India. This place boasts of India’s first magic-carpet which is a modern and rugged conveyor belt that takes you uphill. Adventure lovers can also experience Asia’s longest zipline and a dry tubing sledge to swirl down the mountain.

places to visit in north india

Additionally, Skyview Patnitop offers a gamut of dining options. This includes a specialized Indian restaurant, an upcoming continental restaurant, an open roof Chinese restaurant, and one of the best cafés in Jammu and Kashmir. It is suggested that only after one has thoroughly explored this place, he should check into a nearby hotel. Evenings can be spent breathing fresh and cool air in a close-by meadow or sipping coffee/tea in the hotel balcony. On the 4th day, an hour should be spent in Nathatop which a hilltop surrounded by pine and deodar trees. It offers a great view of the snow-coated hills, especially during winters. Lastly, Sanasar , which is a meadow 20 km from Patnitop is worth visiting before returning to Jammu. This place is a hidden jewel known for its golf course, paragliding, and a lake. If you are traveling to Sanasar anywhere between March and April don’t forget to visit Sanasar’s tulip garden. Besides the Tulip Garden of Srinagar, this is the only other tulip garden in India in March/April. Patnitop has many other places of interest within one-hour distances like Sudhmahadev, Mantalai, and Madhatop; but to explore them more than two days are required.

So here it is. Your best 4 Day itinerary for places to visit in Jammu. Have fun on your next trip!

The town of Mcleodganj, Himachal Pradesh is famous especially and foremostly for being a spiritual getaway and pilgrimage for the Buddhists. The reason behind that is it is home to the 14th Dalai Lama of the Buddhists, Lama Tenzin Gyatso, who came here in the year of 1960 after his exile from Tibet. Dalai Lama established Tibet Government in exile here at Dharamshala and made the quaint little town of Mcleodganj as his permanent residence. The presence of His Holiness in town attracts a lot of tourists and pilgrims to the town. Mcleodganj is also one of the best places to see the real lifestyle of Tibetan Buddhists and monks from up close. And as the elevation rises, the picturesque hills and valleys become clearer, giving it all a serene touch. Another famous tourist spot in Mcleodganj, Himachal Pradesh is Kareri Lake. Filled with the melting snow of the Dhauladhar ranges, this lake at the base of the Minkiani Pass is the perfect combination of offbeat trekking and scenic beauty in the middle of snow-capped peaks. You can simply extend your trek to Kareri Lake to conquer the summit of this serene pass lying at an amazing height of 14,000ft above sea level. The view that one gets of the nearby ranges makes you feel like you are walking on the clouds. A great place to take pictures, Minkiani Pass trek is considered to be somewhere in between easy and moderate in difficulty and makes it worth facing the trek at the end. And one of the most important places in Mcleodganj is the Namgyal Monastery. The place is actually a personal monastery for the 14th Dalai Lama and relates to the very second Religious teacher of the Buddhist belief, dating back to the mid 16th century. Originally in Lhasa, the monastery was entirely relocated to Mcleodganj in the uprising of 1959 and is now the home to the Dalai Lama. It is also the largest Tibetan Temple outside of Tibet. The nearest India can make to being a ski resort is via its pine-fringed Gulmarg. Situated at an elevation of 2730 meters above sea level, it well justifies the Meadow of Flowers tag that it has received. The meadow is given a visual highlight by the 1890s Anglican Church of St Mary’s that sits on a lonely hillock which can be accessed off the dead-end road that links the 1965 neo-colonial style Hotel Highlands Park to the historic Gulmarg Golf Club. However, the key reason to visit Gulmarg is just not the same. You must visit Gulmarg to explore the backing stands of the splendid mature pines traversing you to the elevation of bald Mt Afarwat. To make it to mountain, you can either trek on foot or take help from ponies at a meagre amount of INR 300 per hour. However, the easiest way out is using the two-stage gondola cable car that flutters you to 3747m. The impressive clear day views from the top are worth the ride. During this ride, you’ll encompass Nanga Parbat which is the world’s ninth highest mountain peak located across Pakistan. Booking for this online can help save you from the long queues especially in the peak season of May and June. This service can however be cancelled either due to civil unrest or during bad weather and getting a refund from the organizers can get really annoying then. Base station of Gandola is situated about 1 km west of the bus stand.

Gulmarg endeavors you with more than 40 choices of accommodation each of them beautiful in their own very way. In the months of July, an average room fare (for a night) will be around INR 2000 for the old looking stays and INR 5000 for newer stays. Prices of the hotels see a drop of 20% in the winter season and a further dramatic drop when there is civil unrest in Srinagar or during the less popular months like September.

Biden visits Lewiston, Maine, after mass shooting

President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden travel ed to Lewiston, Maine , on Friday afternoon to pay respects to the victims of a mass shooting  last week that killed 18 people, and to grieve with families and community members.

Biden said in remarks to reporters in Maine that he also met with first responders and laid flowers at a local memorial site. "No pain is the same, but we know what it's like to lose a piece of our soul," the president added. "And the depths of a loss is so profound. Some of us have been there."

Sen. Angus King, I-Maine., said in remarks delivered during Biden's trip: “It is fitting that a President who has known the depths of personal grief has come to Maine and to Lewiston today to share the grief of our families and our state."

In 1972 , Biden’s first wife, Neilia, and daughter, Naomi, who was 13-years-old at the time were killed in a car accident. His son Beau Biden died in 2015 after fighting brain cancer.

During the president's remarks in Maine, he reflected on the other sites of mass shootings he has visited. "Too many to count," he said.

"Unfortunately, this type of trip by the president has become too, too familiar," White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters on Thursday at a White House briefing.

She continued, "Too many times, the president and the first lady have traveled to communities completely torn apart by gun violence. As the president said last week, this is not normal, and we can’t accept it as normal."

Biden has been calling on Congress to pass a new assault weapons ban, universal background checks and help states adopt and strengthen red flag laws, the White House said.

He reiterated those calls during his Friday remarks. "This is about common sense," Biden said. "Reasonable, responsible measures to protect our children, our families, our communities, because regardless of our politics, this is about protecting our freedom to go to a bowling alley, a restaurant, school, church, without being shot and killed."

The deputy director of the White House's Office of Gun Violence Prevention , Greg Jackson, has been on the ground in Maine helping victims as part of the federal government's response to the tragedy.

On Oct. 25, a gunman opened fire at a bowling alley and a bar in the city of Lewiston, setting off a multistate manhunt for the suspect. Officials found the shooter dead two days later from “an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound,” according to Maine Public Safety Commissioner Mike Sauschuck.

Dozens were also injured, officials said, in what was the state's deadliest mass shooting.

After the shooting, Biden  called  on Republicans in Congress to “fulfill their duty to protect the American people.”

“Work with us to pass a bill banning assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, to enact universal background checks, to require safe storage of guns, and end immunity from liability for gun manufacturers,” Biden said. “This is the very least we owe every American who will now bear the scars — physical and mental — of this latest attack.”
