Why can't the iPad browser search bar location be on the bottom?
I just got an iPad and I’m using 16.3 currently. I would love to have the ability to have the search bar be at the bottom, of the safari browser? I have normal sized hands, and feel like this can’t just be annoying for me. Having to reach up to type something into the top of the browser each time is not the greatest user experience in my option (but perhaps it just me).
Anyways, if anyone has more detail here that’d be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Unlike iOS for iPhone, iOS/iPadOS for iPad does not support placement of the Tab/Search bar at the bottom of the screen - most likely because iPad is simply too large to hold and operate with one hand.
Apple do invite submission of comments and feature requests via its Product Feedback portal. For iPad and iPadOS:

I noticed that Safari allows the address bar to be on the bottom for the iPhone, but no option exists for the iPad. I hold my iPad mini at the bottom, so anytime I need to use the back button I'm forced to move one hand up to the top. Is there a browser out there that'd let me have the address bar down at the bottom, or maybe knows of a way to make that happen with Safari? It's strange to me that the option exists for one but not the other.

Moving address bar back to the bottom in Safari
By Justin Harris , 3 December, 2022
Hello, on my iPhone, the address bar is at the bottom in Safari, but on my iPad, it's still at the top, and I want it moved back where it belongs to keep everything the same between both devices. But, I have looked all over and can't find that option at all. I'm missing something here. Any help will be much appreciated.

Another question about tabs
While we're on the topic of rearranging the UI in Safari, I was used to always seeing the "Back", "Forward", "Share", etc. tabs at the bottom of the screen regardless of where one was in the web page.
Now it seems like if you are further down into the web page, those buttons are no longer there unless you scroll back up to the top of the web page.
Is there a way of controlling this behavior or perhaps an easy way of making the tabs appear rather than having to scroll up many page displays to the top of the web page?
Safari settings on iPad
Hello, When you go into your safari settings on the iPad there is a section for tabs. I believe if you want the address bar on the bottom, you need to select the compact tab bar view. Right now my address bar is on the top and that setting is set to the first option.
Double tap on the address bar.
It's the only way I know of to show the tab bar. Unfortunately, it's not a one-time deal but it's easier than scrolling up. If there's a way to permanently put the back, forward and tabs at the bottom, I'm open to suggestions.

How To Move Safari Address Bar To Top Or Bottom
In iOS 15 or later Apple allows users to move the Address Bar to top or bottom of the screen depending on their personal preference. Users can switch between Tab Bar and Single Tab options from Settings and change the way Safari for iPhone works on their device.
In earlier betas of iOS 15 Apple had placed the address bar at the bottom of the screen, however following criticism from social media critics the company gave users the option to choose if they the bar to be at the top or bottom.
This was a great solution to the problem since now users are in more control and can choose whichever option is most suitable for them.
Switch between top and bottom address bar in Safari
Switching between Tab Bar and Single Tab is very easy. You can quickly move Safari Address bar to top or bottom by performing a few simple steps on your device. Just follow these steps.
Step 1. Open Settings and go to Safari option.
Step 2. On the Safari page choose between Tab Bar or Single Tab options.
That’s it, whichever option you choose Safari will instantly switch to it giving you the address bar experience that you prefer.
Placing bar at the top means loss of features
One thing that you should know here is that the Tab Bar option not only places the address bar at the bottom, but it also adds an easier way of switching between Safari website tabs.
You can easily switch between tabs by sliding your finger left or right on the address bar, whereas you can also quickly open a new Safari tab by swiping left when you are on the last tab.
This functionality is not available when you opt for Single Tab option and have the address bar at the top.
The ability to switch between top and bottom address bars is available on iOS 15 or later.

How to Move Address bar to Top or Bottom in Safari iPhone

- Updated: April 23, 2023
Page summary
Safari browser brought the option to move the address or search bar to the top or bottom of the screen. It can be personalized and set to whichever location the users are comfortable with. Customizing the address bar is available in the Safari Settings app and within the Safari browser’s ‘Aa’ customize icon.

The Cupertino giants have just released the fifteenth iteration of iOS. And with that, there are many new and intriguing features that you are about to welcome onto your Apple devices.
SharePlay in FaceTime, Focus Mode, and Live texts are noteworthy. Along the same lines, the Safari browser has also introduced many goodies.
The Landscape Tab Bar , Tab Grouping , Pull to Refresh, and a Mac-style tab bar in Landscape Mode have caught the user’s attention. However, one central user interface redesign in the browser received many hostile receptions.
In iOS 15, Apple decided to push the Safari address bar to the bottom of the browser instead of the earlier top position. It first tested this feature in the beta builds, and even then, it led to backlash from users.
Fortunately, the tech giants noted those feedback and added an option to move the Safari 15 address bar back to the Top on the iPhone/iPad.
This guide will show you how to fully use this feature and get the address or tab bar back to your preferred choice. So without any further ado, let’s get started.
Move Tab Bar to the Top
There exist two different methods to carry out this task. We have listed both below; you may refer to the one in sync with your requirement. The simplest one is within the Safari browser interface.
Option within Safari iPhone
The shorter the two approaches, the method allows you to change the address bar position right from within the browser.
Here are the steps to move the Safari iPhone Address bar to the Top using the Page Customize menu:
- Launch the Safari app on your iPhone.
- Open any website of your choice.
- Tap on the aA icon on the left of the address bar.

It will now move the address bar to the Top of the Safari browser, just like before the iOS 15 upgrade.
Safari Settings on iPhone
The alternate method to move the Safari 15 Address bar to the Top of your iPhone is through the devices or Phone Settings menu. This approach doesn’t require any interaction with the browser window.
Follow the steps to move the Address bar to the Top of the Safari screen from the Phone Settings:
- Launch the Phone Settings on your device.
- Scroll down and select the Safari app within the Settings list.

That’s it; the address bar will revert to the old style and move tabs to the Top of the Safari browser screen.
Shift the Address Bar to Bottom
As mentioned, the new iOS has made Safari’s address bar bottom position the default. However, there are two different methods if you have manually moved its position to the Top via the above-listed instructions and now want to send it back to the bottom.
Safari Settings App
If you need the address or tab bar at the bottom of the screen, you can switch to the new Tab Bar option introduced under Safari’s Phone Settings menu.
Here are the steps to move the Address bar to the bottom of the screen from the Safari Settings page:
- Launch the Phone Settings on the iPhone.
- Scroll and select the Safari app from the settings list.

It will immediately move the address bar to the bottom of the Safari browser screen and enable the tab-switching feature, just like on Safari computers or iPad devices.
Customize within Safari iPhone
The site customization menu within the Safari browser also added the feature to shift the Address or Tab bar within the browser screen. We can choose the Show bottom tab bar to move the address bar to the bottom.
Follow the steps to move the Address bar to the bottom of the Safari iOS screen:
- Launch the Apple Safari on the iPhone.
- Tap on the aA within the address bar.

The Safari browser will immediately shift the address bar at the bottom of the screen and enable the tab-switching feature.
Bottom Line
We round off the guide on moving the Safari address bar to the Top or bottom of the screen on your iPhone. We have shared two different methods for the same. Likewise, we have also listed the steps to revert the changes to how it initially offered the iOS.
This change from the tech giants might have been taken from the ease of usability point of view, considering the difficulty some users might have in reaching the Top of their screen on their large-screen displays.
However, it didn’t necessarily echo the same thought process from the user base. As a result, Apple took the right approach- giving an option back to the users and deciding their preferred placement position of the address bar.
I prefer to keep the Safari address bar at the Top since I’m used to it, and most of the alternative browsers have the same address or tab bar location.
What is your choice for the address bar location in Safari iPhone? Do you prefer it at the Top or bottom? Do let us know.

How to Move the iPhone Safari Search Bar Back to the Top in iOS
Long-time iPhone users may not prefer Safari's bottom address bar introduced in iOS 15, but Apple offers a quick and easy solution.
The Safari search bar was near the top of the iPhone's screen for the longest time. But starting with iOS 15, Apple moved the search bar to the bottom, making it easily accessible on big iPhones. Plus, the addition of an effortless swipe gesture even made it easy to switch tabs.
However, if you do not like the bottom placement of the tab bar, there is a way to move the Safari search bar back to the top of your iPhone. Here, we've listed the steps to help you do that.
Two Ways to Get Back the Old Safari Search Bar on iPhone
Modern versions of iOS offer two ways to move the address bar to the top and improve your Safari experience on an iPhone . The first is from within the Safari app, while the second involves using the iPhone Settings app. We've detailed both ways to move the Safari search bar on your iPhone to the top below:
1. Move the Safari Search Bar to the Top Directly in Safari
This is the more convenient method, as you can do it straight from the browser:
- Visit any website in Safari on your iPhone.
- Tap AA located on the left of your address bar.
- Now, choose Show Top Address Bar . Instantly, the search bar will move to the top and stay like this.
Even if you close Safari and relaunch it, the address bar will stay at the top, making this a quick and easy way to switch its position.
2. Move Safari's Search Bar to the Top From Settings
This is the usual method to find all Safari-related settings in one place. You can also use the option here to move the Safari search bar back to the top:
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
- Scroll down and tap Safari .
- Under Tabs, select Single Tab .
- Now, open Safari, and you'll find the search bar at the top.
How to Switch Back to the Bottom Safari Search Bar
If you change your mind or wish to give Safari's bottom address bar a try, here's how to switch back and use the tab bar:
- When you are inside Safari, tap AA from the top-left.
- Tap on Show Bottom Tab Bar .
- Alternatively, you may go to Settings > Safari and select Tab Bar .
Enjoy seamlessly switching between multiple tabs and better one-handed usage with Safari's tab bar.
What Is the Landscape Tab Bar Option in Safari's Settings?
Inside Safari Settings on an iPhone running iOS 15 or later, you'll see an option called Landscape Tab Bar , which is enabled by default. When you rotate the iPhone in landscape mode and use Safari, you will see all the open tabs on the top, just like you would on a computer browser.
When this particular option is off, this thin strip showing your open tabs is absent. Look at the image below to understand the difference. You may want to keep this enabled for better tab management.
Apple's Safari Redesign for Bigger iPhones
iPhone screens are increasing in size. As a result, most people have trouble reaching the top search bar when using an iPhone one-handed. But this redesign to move the Safari search bar to the bottom of the screen aims to fix that problem. Plus, this change introduces the tab bar, which is quite handy.
However, it's nice to see Apple give long-time iPhone users the option to move the address bar back to the top in case they prefer the old-school look and feel of Safari on the iPhone.
