Frequently Asked Questions
When comparing COVID-19 travel insurance options, you'll want to make sure you fully understand the coverages included in each plan. For example, you should know the policy inclusions and limits for COVID-related claims, including coverage for testing, treatments, trip cancellation or COVID-related interruptions that can occur. Meanwhile, you should understand how your coverage will work if you contract some other illness while away from home.
Also ensure your travel insurance coverage will kick in for other mishaps that occur, and that limits are sufficient for your needs. If you're planning a trip to a remote area in a country like Costa Rica or Peru , you'll want to have emergency evacuation and transportation coverage with generous limits that can pay for emergency transportation to a hospital if you need treatment.
You can also invest in a travel insurance policy that offers cancel for any reason coverage. This type of travel insurance plan lets you cancel and get a percentage of your prepaid travel expenses back for any reason, even if you just decide you're better off staying home.
It depends on your private health insurance provider and/or travel insurance policy. As of May 11, 2023, private health insurers are no longer required to cover the cost of COVID-19 testing. Out-of-pocket costs for COVID-19 test kits at local drugstores and on Amazon are relatively affordable, however.
As you search for plans that will provide sufficient coverage for your next trip, you'll find travel insurance that covers COVID-19 quarantine both inside and outside the United States. However, you'll typically need to have your condition certified by a physician in order for this coverage to apply. Also make sure your travel insurance plan includes coverage for travel claims related to COVID-19 in the first place.
Many travel insurance plans do cover trip cancellation as a result of COVID-19, although the terms vary widely. You typically need to be certified by a physician in order to prove your condition. Disinclination to travel because of COVID-19 – such as fear of exposure to illness – will generally not be covered. This means you will actually have to test positive for coronavirus for benefits to apply; simply not wanting to travel is not a sufficient reason to make a claim.
If you want more flexibility in your COVID-19 travel insurance, ensuring you have a cancel for any reason policy may be your best bet, but be sure to check with your chosen travel insurance provider to assess your options.

Does travel insurance cover COVID?
What is not covered, finding travel insurers covering covid-19, the best covid travel insurance, covid travel insurance, recapped.
Traveling now carries with it more uncertainty than ever before. If you plan on traveling anytime soon, one thing you can do to protect yourself is get a trip insurance policy that includes coronavirus coverage. Previously, many insurers excluded COVID-related claims due to the virus’ status as a foreseen event/pandemic.
But now, some insurers are changing their tune. Here’s what you need to know about how to find travel insurance providers that offer coronavirus-related coverage, as well as what is and isn’t covered.
Coronavirus coverage falls into several categories:
Trip cancellation: You need to cancel a trip prior to departure because you, a covered travel companion or possibly someone you need to care for contracted COVID-19.
Trip delay: Your trip is delayed due to changing COVID-related guidelines.
Travel medical coverage : You (or a covered travel companion) become ill with COVID-19 while traveling abroad and incur health care expenses or require an evacuation.
Of providers that are offering COVID policies, most are covering these expenses.
» Learn more: The majority of Americans plan to travel this year, according to recent NerdWallet study
Countries with Level 4 travel advisories: Some insurers disclose that if a Level 4 Do Not Travel advisory is issued by the U.S. Department of State for a specific country, you will not receive coronavirus-related coverage. With cases surging in various countries unexpectedly, the list of Level 4 countries is constantly changing. Before booking a trip and purchasing a policy, make sure to check that the country does not have a Level 4 advisory.
Fear of getting sick while traveling: Canceling a trip because you’re afraid you’ll get sick does not qualify for coverage under your travel insurance policy. Travel insurance providers have a list of standard reasons that qualify for cancellation, including: car accident, jury duty, terrorist act, military duty and other extenuating circumstances. If you want ultimate flexibility to cancel a trip (no matter the reason), you’ll want to look into the cancel for any reason, or CFAR, supplemental upgrade , which is offered on some travel insurance plans. When you purchase CFAR, you can get up to 75% of your nonrefundable deposit back as long as you cancel at least two days in advance. Not all plans offer CFAR as an option, so research before you purchase if you're interested in this add-on.
COVID-related events not directly related to you: If you planned on going to a conference or a family reunion that was canceled due to COVID-associated concerns, your travel insurer will not reimburse your nonrefundable flight or hotel accommodations.

Generally, the policies underwritten by U.S.-based travel insurance providers vary by state, trip information, traveler’s ages and other various details. Travel insurance comparison site Squaremouth (a NerdWallet partner) is one of the very few comparison sites that allows you to filter by policies that offer coronavirus coverage.
To find a policy that specifically covers coronavirus-related losses, input your departure and return dates, your main destination and select “Search for Policies Now.”
In our example, we input the following details: A $3,000 paid-in-full trip to Greece leaving on Oct. 9 and returning on Oct. 18 by a 40-year old U.S. citizen who is a resident of California. The policy will include trip cancellation coverage.

When incorporating the “Coronavirus Pandemic” filter, the results reveal that 57 out of 100 policies include this coverage. You can select additional filters, such as cancel for any reason, if you’re looking for that optional upgrade.
The results can be sorted by price, top sellers, top reviews and insurance providers, offering plenty of ways to easily search for the specific policy you’re looking for.
Each of the top three policies (which is just a sampling of the nearly 60 options) includes coronavirus cancellation and medical coverage, and displays the associated limits. Trip cancellation coverage is $3,000, representing the value of the trip. The price of the policy is clearly stated and ranges from 4.8% to 6.1% of the total trip cost. This range represents very typical travel insurance costs .

Once you narrow your search, you’ll want to review the full policy details to ensure you’re familiar with what exactly is covered and not covered.
If you have specific questions — especially as they relate to the constantly changing travel advisories or whether coronavirus is considered as a foreseen event (which some providers will not cover) — you’ll want to reach out to the insurer. The last thing you want is to purchase travel insurance and later find out it will not cover you in your intended destination.

Hi Ricky! I just discovered your website and feel like a whole new world has been opened up to me! I have the West Jet World Elite M/C (RBC) and I don’t see the benefits of the card really helping me, so not worth the annual fee. The anniversary is in December, and I’m wondering if it’s possible to switch to the RBC Avion rather than cancel and apply for a new card, because I’m reading that’s not always the best option. But since these card are from the same bank, it may work? And then I could qualify for the new welcome bonus for the Avion?
Would I get the full points if I switch from an RBC cashback card to an RBC Avion visa infinite?
** Product switch only earned 15,000 points
Hi Ricky, Is there a card that has a better return than the 2.14 this one has for long haul in Canada? I currently use my rewards every two years to fly across Canada at Xmas. Family is now 4 travellers and only have points for 3 so looking to maximize.
I just got approved for the Avion Visa Infinite. I’m interested to see how beneficial the welcome bonus points of 35000 will be when redeeming them for a flight from Toronto to California. Would you suggest to use the points to upgrade my seats? I’m also interested in the cellphone protection insurance as I haven’t seen that offered in other cards.

Points are almost always better spent on making bookings directly rather than upgrading seats.
Just applied and got approved for Avion Visa Platinum, would you say this card is really good if you only want to carry 2 cards in your wallet? (btw my other card is American Express Cobalt Card)
I’d say it’s a decent choice, but you may be able to do better. For example, pairing the Cobalt with the HSBC World Elite would deliver a lot more benefits for your non-Amex spending for only a $49 net annual fee.
I checked flights using Avios search engine going to South America (Buenos Aires) and other destinations. The economy seats are really expensive. It practically makes your points WORTHLESS to use. What’s the point of following this point system if you cant fly where you want to go. It’s better if you stick with cheapflights.com or any of these third-party websites for really cheap flights.
Correct. Points are better used on higher-value trips like business class and First Class.
Since I hold the rbc rewards+ visa I can’t get the 35000 points welcome bonus l even if I product switch or apply for the avion visa infinite right? So I am basically out of luck?
I have this card and received the bonus points. If I use the bonus points then product switch to a card with no AF, is there any chance that they require the points back or something? How long would you hold the card before doing this? I’ve been told by an RBC agent that they’ll provide a pro-rated refund on the AF if I switch.
Unlikely. The safest timeline for such actions is six months, although some users have “gotten away with” shorter timeframes.
Hi Ricky, I just checked out the link to apply for this RBC card but only the standard offer of 15,000 points and no first annual fee rebate is offered. Has this promotion finished already?
Yep. These “mystery links” that pop up never last too long, so now we’re back to the standard offer of 15,000 points + $120 annual fee. Time to wait for the next one!
I have the Westjet now, if I make a switch product. Would I be entitled to this 20K promotion?
Most of the time a product switch only gives you the public bonus that isn’t found through a special link – in this case it’d be the usual 15k.
And it wouldn’t be FYF right?
It would appear that the additional 10,000 RBC Avion bonus points (for making purchases of $1000) is no longer on offer. Today, Oct 1, I started to sign up through the link above. The lead page now references the 15,000 bonus only.
Looks like you’re right Al. Back down to 15k it is.
Data point for reference: I product switched from the Avios to this and did not receive the bonus points. (But I did receive bonus points when I product switched from the RBC Westjet to the Avios prior to that).
Just applied and approved. Thanks for the link
Any idea if it’s possible to apply and get the bonus if I already have this card currently open?

Group Benefits
How rbc insurance supporting group benefits clients.
We at RBC Insurance are working as quickly as possible to assess the impacts of COVID-19 and to keep you informed of key decisions that impact you and your group benefits plan. We are here to support you and your family. While things continue to move fast and change quickly, below is some important information.
COVID-19 Update: Short-Term Disability Claims
Short-term disability benefits provide income replacement, for short durations, in the event a person is unable to work due to injury or illness.
If you’ve tested positive and are diagnosed with COVID-19 and cannot work (even from home), whether or not you are displaying symptoms, benefits will be paid once the elimination period is satisfied. Standard claim forms must be submitted, including the Attending Physician Statement.
If you’ve tested negative for COVID-19, but have symptoms that prevent you from working (even from home), a standard STD application claim should be submitted. Standard contractual provisions would apply, including the elimination period.
If you are not at work because you’ve been advised to quarantine by a government or health care authority, and are not too ill to work otherwise , you will not be eligible for STD. For example, mass quarantines issued by a health authority or cautionary quarantines issued by an employer would not qualify for coverage. This means that if you have no disabling symptoms and cannot work from home, benefits will not be paid. A claim through the one of Government of Canada Employment Insurance program or any of the new COVID-19 response benefit programs should be submitted. These new programs include the Canada Recovery Benefit, the Canada Recovery Sickness Benefit, and the Canada Recovery Caregiver Benefit and all provide income replacement to those who have been impacted due to COVID-19.
TIP: The Canada Recovery Sickness Benefit (CRSB) provides up to two weeks of financial support for employees who are unable to work because they are sick or need to self-isolate due to COVID-19, or who have an underlying health condition that puts them at risk of getting COVID-19. Employees are encouraged to apply for this benefit when not in receipt of STD benefits, for example, during their STD elimination period. They cannot receive any other benefits while receiving the CRSB, including any STD benefits.
For more information on this benefit go to the Canada's Economic Response Plan opens new window website.
COVID-19 Update: Travel Insurance under RBC Insurance Group Benefits Plans
Our Group Benefits medical emergency coverage has changed effective January 1, 2021. COVID-19 will be covered for travel departing on or after January 1, 2021 while there is a Level 3 (Avoid Non-Essential travel) advisory or lower issued by the Government of Canada. For those insurance policies with Trip Cancellation Trip Interruption coverage, COVID-19 Pandemic will continue to be considered a known occurrence and as such is excluded from coverage.
As COVID-19 cases continue to rise and risk is heightened, we strongly recommend that you visit the Government of Canada’s Global Travel Advisory website before booking your trip and only travel when necessary.
I am planning a trip. Am I covered for medical emergency during the COVID-19 Pandemic?
If you depart on or after January 1, 2021 while there was a Level 3 (Avoid Non-Essential travel) or lower advisory in place, you will be covered for COVID-19 related claims under your group emergency medical insurance. If you have Trip Cancellation Trip Interruption coverage, COVID-19 continues to be a known occurrence and will not be covered should you need to cancel or cut your trip short due to COVID-19.
If you travel to a location that is under a Level 4 (Avoid all travel) advisory, medical emergency will not be covered. If you are already in a country when the Level 4 advisory is issued, you will be given 10 days to return home. Your medical emergency will remain covered during the 10-day period.
Visit the Government of Canada Global Travel Advisory website for updates on travel advisories.
If you departed prior to January 1, 2021, you would only be covered under medical emergency for COVID-19 related claims if you were traveling for work that is deemed essential. Any leisure or non-essential travel would not be covered for COVID-19 related claims. Any medical emergency claims not related to COVID-19 continue to be covered.
If you are traveling to Mexico or the Caribbean, effective immediately and until further notice, our Group Benefits medical emergency top-up coverage is temporarily unavailable.
Visit the Government of Canada website for Guidance on Essential Services and Functions in Canada During the COVID-19 Pandemic.
I am now in a country where a Level 4 advisory was just issued. Am I covered for medical emergency?
I have to cancel my trip, or cut my trip short due to COVID-19, will my Group Benefit coverage cover my loss?
COVID-19 pandemic is considered a known occurrence under the Trip Cancellation Trip Interruption coverage and is excluded from coverage. If you have to cancel or interrupt your trip due to COVID-19, your Trip Cancellation Trip Interruption coverage will not cover the claim.
What is the difference between a Level 3 and Level 4 Advisory?
The Government of Canada issues 4 travel health notices for travel destinations as follows:
- Level 1 - Practice usual precautions
- Level 2 - Practice special precautions
- Level 3 - Avoid all non-essential travel
- Level 4 - Avoid all travel
Visit the Government of Canada Risk levels and Travel Advisories website for more information.

Travelers reaches deal to buy Boston-based insurance tech firm Corvus for $435 million
The cyber-focused insurance startup will merge with an industry giant..

Corvus Insurance has found a new nest.
Travelers Companies Inc. has reached a deal to pay $435 million to buy the Boston-based insurance-tech startup, which specializes in cybersecurity and is named after the genus of tool-making birds that includes crows and ravens.
The deal, which is expected to close in early 2024, originated out of a growing business relationship between the two companies. Travelers had reached an agreement with Corvus to sell cyber policies in Europe a year ago, using Corvus software to handle the underwriting, and recently broadened that partnership to include the United States. (Corvus also works with other large insurers as well.) The executives at Travelers obviously liked what they saw, and decided to buy the company outright.

“This transaction accelerates our access to cutting-edge cyber capabilities that were on our strategic roadmap,” such as sophisticated underwriting algorithms and vulnerability scanning, Travelers chief executive Alan Schnitzer said in a statement.
Executives at both companies declined to comment beyond a press release Travelers issued on Friday morning.
Corvus employs about 250 people today, including fewer than 100 based out of its headquarters at 100 Summer St. The business was launched in 2017 by Mike Lloyd, a Harvard Business School grad, and veteran insurance executive Phil Edmundson, who had sold brokerage William Gallagher Associates two years earlier. Venture capitalist Jeff Bussgang, who teaches at HBS, introduced Lloyd and Edmundson. The thesis behind Corvus: use new ways of data-crunching to better predict problems and prevent them from happening, to “make the world safer” — a common refrain at the firm.
Edmundson last year handed over the CEO’s job to Madhu Tadikonda, who is based in New York, and became executive chairman as a result, while Lloyd remains chief operating officer.
Initially, the firm focused on various kinds of insurance, such as shipping and logistics. But as the company grew, it focused on its most successful business line, cybersecurity. The firm uses its technology to identify cyber vulnerabilities for policy holders and reduce their exposure. Over time, Corvus attracted interest from a number of venture capital investors, including Boston’s Bain Capital Ventures and .406 Ventures. As of 2021, Corvus had raised $147 million in venture investments.
