The San Antonio Airport Was Just Disrupted by a Monkey

Maybe he had a middle seat; maybe he didn't get priority boarding. Whatever the reason for his grievance, a San Antonio-bound monkey escaped his cage Monday afternoon for a self-guided tour of the San Antonio Airport (SAT) baggage area.

The monkey arrived at San Antonio (SAT) from Chicago (ORD) Monday afternoon and "inadvertently became free of his cage" somewhere along the way, said a spokesperson for American Airlines. The monkey, a rhesus macaque named Dawkins, had originally come from Boston (BOS), and was on his way to a new home at the Born Free USA primate sanctuary, located on 186 acres just outside the San Antonio area.

Dawkins remained in the baggage area and never entered the passenger part of the airport itself. A video posted to Twitter showed him, err, monkeying around one of the baggage carousels in the cargo area. The San Antonio Aviation Department and officials from the San Antonio Zoo worked together with the airport and the airline to make sure Dawkins didn't suffer undue stress.

Soon after this video was taken, Dawkins was successfully tranquilized, and he is now on his way to his new home.

"One of the realities of working with primates is that situations often can be unpredictable, and that is precisely what happened today," Born Free USA said via Twitter . "While this is not an ideal arrival for Dawkins, his is destined for a very comfortable life - the kind of life he deserves - at our Sanctuary, that will be as close as possible to life in the wild."

American Airlines said it would conduct a full review of the situation. TPG has reached out to Dawkins for a review of the Boeing 737-800 cargo hold experience.

We had originally identified, incorrectly, the subject of this story as a baboon. It later transpired that it was in fact a rhesus macaque, a different species. We have corrected the story.

Driving away from Manuel Antonio National Park in southern Costa Rica early in the morning, we saw the slow-moving form of a 3-toed sloth crawl onto the road. Immediately recognizing the animal, we pulled over and began to warn and direct oncoming traffic to make sure it made it across the busy road safely.

Once across the road and out of danger, the sloth took a good look around and beelined it for the nearest tree, completely unhurried or worried about the people surrounding it and with the enigmatic smile that all sloths seem to have. It cruised up the tree and left behind silent advice that seemed to tell everyone to slow down, look around, and smile.

Manuel Antonio National Park Tour

Dixon, from HP Tours, did an amazing job on this private guided tour of Manuel Antonio National Park. He is very knowledgable and could spot even the smallest of animals from a long distance away. He would set up his monocular for us to view the animals, then take a photo of them through his monocular. Very highly recommended!

We were picked up at our hotel at 6:30 am by Harry and Dixon. There were 12 people total but we split into two groups. There was no waiting to get into the park. Once inside Dixon proceeded to spot many different animals- two and three toed sloths, howler monkeys, spider monkeys and iguanas (plus many birds). Dixon had a wealth of knowledge about the local fauna. And he was a very friendly, helpful guide. We stopped for a break at the beach where we swam and relaxed. We came away with a lot of good pictures and the memories of a very special place. Highly recommended. Make sure you bring water and a swimsuit.

This company was recommended by other guests at our hotel. Dickson picked us up on time and our party of 2 was joined by another couple. Dickson was fantastic at spotting the wildlife in Manuel Antonio, where we would have struggled to see much on our own. The photos through his scope are great and he narrated several videos too. He was a fun guide to have and we really enjoyed our visit to the park.

Henry is an amazing guide. We couldn’t get over the wildlife he was able to spot and took great pictures with our phones. We saw monkeys, sloths, bats, lizards. We would highly recommend you book with Henry, you won’t be disappointed.

Our party of 4 joined another party of 4 for a lovely morning tour of the wildlife in Manuel antonio National Park. Dixon was our tour guide. He picked us up on time in a new van. We were at the park when it opened. He toured us thru the park, finding wildlife at evey turn. We took turns looking thru his telescope and he took pictures and videos for us thru the telescope as well. It was wonderful and instructive 4 hours. But pay attention. there may be a quiz at the end.

We took an afternoon tour of Rainmaker Park with Henry of HP tours. I HIGHLY recommend taking Henry along for your tour of Rainmaker or Manuel Antonio Park. He is THE authority on the natural environment in the area and has incredible knowledge about the flora and fauna. We wouldn't have seen nearly as many creatures (or learned nearly as much about the park) if we had gone on our own. How he spots the animals in the park with the naked eye is a total mystery. HIGHLY recommended. Giant THANK YOU to Henry!

In the Manuel Antonio area, you can find 3 options for night tours and all tours offer similar sightings, unlike the places where they take place, some are closer to Manuel Antonio so if transportation time is not a problem you can take any of the options we offer!

The closest night tour to the hotels is only 10 or 15 minutes away and borders the protected area of Manuel Antonio National Park, this helps some of the species that live there to give us a visit while we do the tour.

The second night tour has a similar transport time between 15 to 20 minutes and is carried out by boat through mangrove forest facilitating the sightings of crocodiles, snakes, birds while they sleep and on some occasions “sloths”

The third option for the night tour is Rainmaker Park, this place is a private conservation area 23 km away from Manuel Antonio National Park, it is undoubtedly a beautiful place, this tour has a search for amphibians and reptiles in a lagoon and then with a walk through the jungle.
