A Less-Touristy Alternative to Ladakh in Himachal Pradesh

The spellbinding Spiti Valley, located in Himachal Pradesh in India, is often proclaimed by those who see it to be world within a world. With an average height of around 12,500 feet above sea level, it consists of stark high-altitude alpine land. This is scattered with small villages and monasteries, and enclosed by soaring peaks crowned with snow.

Spiti is bordered by Ladakh in the north, Tibet to the east, Kinnaur to the south east, and the Kullu Valley to the south. It shares the same religion as Tibet -- Tibetan Buddhism.

The majority of people who inhabit the area are farmers who produce crops of barely, wheat, and peas. They rise early every morning to attend to their crops. Only one crop per year is possible, due to the extreme weather.

Climate in Spiti

Spiti receives heavy snow fall during the winter. This results in many villages being completely cut off from the rest of the valley. The ideal time to visit Spiti is from May to October. During this time, the weather is sunny and pleasant. Spiti is also the most accessible during these months.

Altitude Sickness

Due to Spiti's high altitude, special care must be taken to avoid altitude sickness. You should allow a couple of days to acclimatize before heading up to the higher villages in Spiti. In addition, you should drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration.

How to Get to Spiti

Spiti isn't that far away from the rest of India in terms of distance. Yet, due to the condition of the roads, it's not possible to get to Spiti quickly or easily. Even though the drive to Spiti is long, it's far from boring. The ever changing scenery is so stunning, it's unlikely that you'll be tempted to take even the shortest of naps.

There are two routes leading to Spiti. These are from Manali, and from Shimla.

Manali to Spiti -- the distance from Manali to Spiti is a little over 200 kilometers (125 miles). It can be covered in eight to 12 hours, depending on whether you go by bus or by jeep, and the condition of the road around Rohtang Pass near Manali. It's best to leave Manali as early in the morning as possible (before 6 a.m.), to avoid major traffic congestion and delays at Rohtang Pass. Rohtang Pass and Kunzum Pass are covered in snow for most of the year, with the roads only open from May to October. Therefore, it's only possible to travel from Manali to Spiti during these months. (Note: the road has been opening in late June or early July as opposed to May in recent years). Nevertheless, this route remains the most straightforward way of getting to Spiti. It's also very popular with motorcycle enthusiasts. There's a police checkpoint at Losar village, at the entrance to the Spiti Valley, where foreigners are required to produce their passport and register their details.

Shimla to Spiti (via Rekong Peo in Kinnaur) -- the distance from Shimla to Spiti is around 420 kilometers (260 miles). It can be covered in about 20 hours by bus or 16 hours by jeep along the Hindustan Tibet Road. The journey is arduous and best broken up by a stop in Rekong Peo. If you take this route, be aware that foreigners must get an Inner Line permit from the District Collectors office in either Shimla or Rekong Peo. The permits allow travel in the restricted area from Rekong Peo to Tabo. According to the rules, such permits are only issued to groups of two or more people traveling together. However, the office at Rekong Peo is less strict about enforcing this (and less busy too).

Which Route Should You Take?

Both routes have their advantages or disadvantages. Although it's significantly longer, a major benefit of the Shimla to Spiti route is its gradual ascent. This allows for better acclimatization and reduced risk of altitude sickness. The route is also open all year round, except for when there's heavy snowfall in Kinnaur and really inclement weather. Plus, you'll be able to avoid the inconvenience of having to go through Rohtang Pass. The dramatic and at times hair-raising Hindustan Tibet Road is an adventure in itself. Foreigners may not want waste time (two to four hours) getting an Inner Line Permit for this route though. If you have enough time, you can do a complete circuit -- arriving at Spiti by one route and departing by another.

Types of Transport

If you don't have your own vehicle, taking a taxi is the easiest way of getting to Spiti. However, it's expensive! You can expect to pay 8,000-10,000 rupees for a private jeep taxi from Manali (this price will reduce to about 3,500 rupees per day if you book the vehicle for the whole trip including return), or about 1,000-2,000 rupees per person in a shared taxi depending on the size of the vehicle. Buses are cheaper and cost about 400 rupees per person. There are two Himachal Pradesh Road Transport Corporation services a day from Manali to Kaza, and they depart really early in the morning (5 a.m. and 5.30 a.m).

Expect to pay more from Shimla to Spiti. Bus services from Shimla run to Reckong Peo, and then from Reckong Peo to Kaza. You can choose to depart Shimla either early in the morning or in the evening.

Villages in Spiti

Spiti has a total population of around 10,500 people. These people inhabit villages spread over three levels of altitude -- lower, middle, and upper -- with Kaza being the region's main administrative center. Kaza, with an altitude of 12,500 feet (3,800 meters) above sea level is in the upper region, and is popularly used as a base by travelers.

A trip to Spiti wouldn't be complete without exploring the villages, and discovering exactly what it’s like to inhabit such a remote, high altitude environment. The harsh winters force residents to stockpile food and remain housebound for months at a time. During this period, they occupy themselves by making handicrafts.

There are a number of villages in the Spiti Valley that are of interest:

Kibber -- once the world's highest village with a motorable road and electricity, it's located not far from Kaza at 14,200 feet (4,270 meters) above sea level. It's popular with travelers and has a few laid-back guest houses.
Komic -- Asia's highest village with Spiti's highest monastery at an altitude of 15,049 feet (4,587 meters) above sea level.
Langza -- known for its fossils, is a small village with a huge and colorful statue of Lord Buddha presiding over it. It has an altitude of 14,500 feet (4,400 meters) above sea level.
Demul -- is a lively and alluring village, with a captivating vista at 14,300 feet (4,360 meters) about sea level. It's an excellent place to spend a day or two at a homestay. It's also becoming Spiti's model sustainable village, with solar power and waste management.
Lhalung -- located at a height of 12,000 feet (3,660 meters) above sea level, is rich in diverse flora including Seabuckthorn trees.
Dhankar -- is a large and remarkable village, that was once the capital of Spiti. Located 12,760 feet (3,890 meters) about sea level, the village is an unforgettable sight as it balances precariously on the edge of the cliff face. Attractions include the Dhankhar monastery, ruined fort, lake, and awe inspiring views. (Foreigners require a permit for this area, obtainable in Kaza).

Monasteries in Spiti

There are five main Tibetan Buddhist monasteries in Spiti -- Ki, Komic, Dhankar, Kungri (in the Pin Valley) and Tabo. Visiting these monasteries is a fascinating experience. Inside, they're filled with mystical dimly lit rooms and ancient treasures. You’ll be able to unearth well preserved artwork, scriptures, and statutes as you delve into the Tibetan Buddhist religion.

The monasteries have significant influence over the lives of Spiti’s inhabitants. Tradition requires that families donate their second eldest son to the monastery in their area, or pay a hefty (and usually unaffordable) fine.

Ki Monastery -- located not far from Kaza, Ki Gompa is the largest and most accessible monastery in Spiti. It's full of narrow stairways, box like rooms, and courtyards. The monastery rewards those who enter with a magnificent view over the valley. Another highlight is seeing the bedroom that the Dalai Lama slept in during his visit to the monastery. Don’t miss the annual three day Chaam festival, featuring masked dancing monks, that's held at the monastery in late July.
Tabo Monastery -- founded in 996 AD, Tabo is the oldest monastery and has an important role to play. The Dalai Lama will retire from his duties there. Although Tabo is located two hours from Kaza, it's well worth a visit. There are nine temples in the complex, as well assembly hall, captivating statues, incredibly beautiful art work, and a public library. You'll also find meditation caves nearby. (Foreigners require a permit for this area, obtainable in Kaza).
Dhankar Monastery -- it's the spectacular rocky setting that makes this monastery special. The sculptures and frescoes are also interesting. (Foreigners require a permit for this area, obtainable in Kaza).
Komic Monastery -- this small monastery is perched on a desolate hilltop overlooking Asia's highest village.

Yak Safari -- if you're not up for trekking (which does require excellent fitness and stamina!) a yak safari is a perfect alternative. Each village family usually owns one yak, which they let roam freely during the summer. Your safari will take place on one of these yaks, fetched by the village boys. A yak safari from Komic to Demul villages takes around four hours, including a stop for lunch.

Where to Stay in Spiti

You'll find a range of comfortable hotels, guesthouses, and backpacker hostels in Kaza and Kibber.

In Kaza, expect to pay around 1,000 rupees upwards per night for a clean room, with western toilet and 24 hour hot water. Hotel Deyzor is undoubtedly the most popular place to stay, with rooms from 1,400 rupees per night. The next best option is Sakya Abode (in the new part of town). Kaza now has a Zostel hostel and notably it's Asia's highest backpacker hostel. There are dorms, tents, and private rooms. The Traveller's Shed is another new budget option, with dedicated service center for bikers.

Accommodations in Kibber (where backpackers hangout) are cheaper, and more basic. There a number of guest houses to choose from. The best place is Norling Guest House at the entrance to the village, with rooms from 1,200 rupees per night. They offer tours as well as accommodations with balconies. Plus, beer on request.

One of the most fascinating things that you can do in Spiti is to stay in one of the villages with a local family. The rustic homestays are are all very similar in terms of facilities, although each village differs in its nature, and cost around 3,000 rupees per night including meals. Be prepared to use traditional composting toilets, which are not much more than a hole in the ground.

While staying in Spiti’s villages, you’ll be able to dine on delicious home made local cuisine, often consisting of momos (vegetable dumplings), thukpa and thenthuk (hearty noodle soups).

The nearest airport is the Kullu Manali Airport is Bhuntar which is 245km away from the valley. Keeping tourism in mind, one more terminal was inaugurated at this airport in 2008. Situated at an approximate distance of 11km from Kullu and 50km from Manali , the airport is located on the banks of the river Beas and is well-connected to the major cities of India. Many prominent airlines like Indigo, Vistara, and Air India operate in this region, but you won't get direct flights in most cases. After you deboard at the airport, you will need to cover the remaining distance to reach your destination by some means of public transportation like a cab or a bus.

Spiti valley has some really fascinating landscapes to explore but taking a road trip here won't be a cakewalk. So, before you plan one here, you must consider a few important things beforehand. Spiti is an extremely cold desert valley situated at the height of 12,500 feet above the sea level. It is therefore important to acclimate your body properly before entering this Himalayan beauty. Going via the route of Shimla, the altitudes increase gradually, and this helps your body in getting acclimated properly for this adventurous trip. This also ensures that you don’t get hit by the problem of acute mountain sickness.

The second reason to enter Spiti valley via the Shimla route is that it transverse through the Hindustan – Tibet Highway often touted as the most treacherous roads in the entire world for the adventure junkies.

You can take this route at any time of the year as it doesn’t get closed unlike the Manali route which remains closed for the entire year expect from the second week of June to 15th of October.

You also don’t need to take Rohtang Pass permit if you travel to Spiti from Manali side. You need to take this pass only when you decide to travel to Rohtang Pass via Manali route.

To go to Spiti Valley, choose the closest airport. The distance between Chandigarh Airport and Spiti Valley is approximately 520 kilometers. Another option for traveling to Spiti Valley is by train, but this is not recommended due to the poor connectivity from the closest train station (Jogindernagar).

Spiti Valley: A Place in the Indian Himalayas That Has My Heart

Ever since I have realized my love for the mountains, I look for opportunities to escape from the madness of city life. And for this reason, I along with my friend, planned a trip to Spiti Valley – the oh-so-beautiful tourist destination in Himachal Pradesh which of course has been and is still on every traveller’s bucket list in India. Nestled between India and Tibet, the cold deserted, landlocked mountain valley has a unique vibe that made me almost speechless. To put it simply, Spiti is not just a place, it is a feeling. With this, I am here to share my travel experience of visiting Spiti Valley, which is a complete world in itself. I don’t know if I would be able to do justice to this hill station, as it is a bit difficult to compile all the experiences, feelings and share the journey in words. But, I will try my level best.

The Excitement Begins: Delhi to Manali

Well, there are two ways to reach Spiti Valley; you can either go via Shimla-Kinnaur route or take the shorter route i.e., via Manali. We chose to travel to Spiti taking the shorter route. With our hearts filled with excitement, we boarded an overnight HRTC bus on 9th August 2019 from ISBT Kashmir Gate around 10:30 PM. Next day, upon reaching Manali somewhere around 2:00 PM., we enquired about the bus timings for Kaza which departs every morning at 6:00 AM from the old bus stand of Manali. Once we were done with the enquiry, we began searching for a hotel for an overnight stay in Manali . There are a number of places to stay both in Old and New Manali. The accommodation options in Old Manali are much better in terms of ambience. So, we ended up booking our stay with Eagle Guest House in Old Manali at INR 500/- per day cost. The rooms of the hotel offer a clear view of apple orchards which is no less than a treat to the eyes. After relaxing for a while, we visited Beas River, went for a stroll in the market area and had dinner. After all this, we returned back to our hotel for a good night sleep as we had to wake up early the next morning for our Spiti Valley expedition.

A Tiring Journey Worth Taking: Manali to Batal

As it is the only bus leaving for Kaza , it becomes a bit difficult to catch the bus. Locals along with the tourists wait for the bus to travel to Kaza, which means you would find a huge rush. Somehow we managed to get inside the bus and find a seat for ourselves for the journey ahead of around 8-9 hours. Adding to this, the bus fare from Manali to Kaza is INR 400/- per person, but we had to get down at Batal (to head to Chandratal Lake Campsite the very same day) so they charged us INR 200/- per person.

Well, the road condition from Manali to Kaza was quite bad and delays are often caused. However, taking this road is unavoidable for reaching Kaza. Even though it was a hectic journey, but looking outside the window of the bus surely gave a visual feast.

Every day around 1:30-2:30 PM., the bus arrives for lunch at the ‘Chandra Dhaba’ most commonly known as ‘Chacha Chachi Dhaba’ in Spiti’s Batal District, and then after half an hour, moves ahead towards Kaza. We could have stayed at Batal (accommodation options are available at a cheaper budget) and the next day either hitchhiked or trekked to Chandratal Lake, but as we already had the pre-booking at the Moonlake Camps done with Wandertrails , we decided to leave for the campsite the very same day. We booked the camp for a night which charged us INR 1500/- per person, including snacks, dinner and breakfast.

Lucky We Were to Enjoy a Bike Ride from Batal to Chandratal Lake Campsite!

The distance from Batal to Chandratal Campsite is approx 10 km which means one can either hitchhike or trek to the campground. But we were lucky as we met a biker group from Faridabad at the Chacha Chachi Dhaba who were humble enough to offer us help. They asked us to take one of their bikes to reach Chandratal Lake Campsite. They told us, they would be staying at Batal and the next morning would meet us at Chandratal Lake. So, we kick-started the bike, drove for around 35-40 minutes and reached the campsite. The bike ride up to Chandratal Lake campsite has given me the experience of a lifetime. The landscape, Oh! The view it offers is truly commendable.

Upon reaching our camp, we relaxed for a while, felt the coziness by sitting near the bonfire and helped ourselves with tea and biscuits. As there is no electricity and network connectivity, so this was the perfect time to admire and embrace nature.

So the campsite is somewhere around 2-3 km from Chandratal Lake, one can easily indulge in a short hike up to the tourism attraction. But in our case, we were a bit unfortunate as the very next morning we suffered from Altitude Mountain Sickness (AMS) and had to hitchhike and reach Chandratal Lake. The roads to the lake are adventurous and nature is just surreal.

Chandratal Lake: A Fairyland Where You Can Constantly Feel Your Heartbeats

Also called ‘Moon Lake’ or ‘Lake of the Moon’, Chandratal Lake is a freshwater alpine lake enclosed by Chadrabhaga and Kunzum Ranges of the Himalayas. The awe-inspiring beauty of the lake and the surrounding areas has consumed my heart and mind. Enclosed by arid mountains and a little greenery, this crescent-shaped, high altitude glacial lake literally gave me goosebumps and had left me spellbound. Sitting at the edge of the lake, I felt magical energy that was soul-soothing. I truly don’t know if it was the air or the colourful Buddhist prayer flags, but I felt a need to stay calm and quiet, relish the beauty of my surroundings and be thankful for life.

Well, words can’t do justice to the impressive beauty of Chandratal Lake. One needs to visit the place to experience and witness the true wonders of Mother nature. Once you are there, the place will compel you to either stay back or visit again repeatedly.

Things to Do on a Family Vacation in Himachal Pradesh

Where to Stay When Visiting Chandratal Lake?

Popular amongst both domestic as well as international tourists, Chandratal Lake is one of the best spots for adventurous activities like trekking and camping. As camping near the lake is not possible anymore, there are a number of camps for accommodation near Chandratal Lake which are located about 2-3 km from the lake (as already mentioned above.)

So, after spending my time at the Chandratal Lake, it was now time to bid adieu to the place and return back to Batal to board the bus for Kaza. We hitchhiked from Chandratal Lake to Batal and we were there by 1:00 PM. The Manali to Kaza bus was already at Batal for lunch break. We spoke to the conductor and somehow managed to get inside the bus for our onward journey to Kaza by 2:30 PM.

Finally Kaza: A Slight Drizzle Greeted Us!

After 4-hour long journey in the bus, we finally reached Kaza by 6:30 PM. and it was drizzling which didn’t last for too long. For this night, we had our booking at the Old Circuit House, which is located in the Kaza Market. Later the caretaker transferred us to the New Circuit House which is at the outskirts of Kaza. The Circuit House charged us INR 560/- per day (which was quite in budget).

After keeping our bags and other essentials, we went for a stroll in Kaza Market. As we were walking by, we came across a number of fascinating cafes which grabbed my attention. The must-visits are ‘The Himalayan Cafe’ and ‘Cafe Zomsa’ in the main Kaza Market. The interior of both the cafes are ah-mazing, the former one is quirky and the latter has a cozy set up along with the live music. The market closes around 9:00 PM., so we quickly had our dinner and were back to the Old Circuit House for a peaceful sleep.

Note: Finding accommodation in Kaza is not at all a difficult task as there are a number of homestays that wouldn’t burn a hole in your pocket. Also, there is Zostel Spiti and other luxury places to stay that you may choose from.

Kaza to Kibber and Back, On a Cycle: My Most Memorable Microadventure

Bike and Bullet Rentals in Kaza

Kaza acts as the centre point to the nearby sightseeing places and other points of interest. Renting a bike/bullet or an activa to explore these places is an ideal choice. So, we decided to do the same and rented an activa at INR 1200/- per day cost for visiting Key Monastery, Kibber and Chicham Bridge. We also rented a bullet at INR 1500/- per day cost for visiting Komic, Langza and Hikkim. Of course, I didn’t ride the bullet, my friend did, and I was the one sitting behind and clicking all the pictures and shooting videos.

Note: There are three points from where you can rent a bike in Kaza, one of them is Spiti Outdoors. The rent of bikes/bullets and activa might vary, but usually, it ranges from 1000/- to 1500/- per day cost. Also, you can book a taxi that would charge you 1300-/ day for exploring Key Monastery, Kibber and Chicham Bridge. And if you are willing to visit these places along with Hikkim, Langza and Komic in one day, then you can book the taxi at 3000/- per day cost.

Spiti – A World in Itself

Day 1: A Fun and Frolic Ride to Key Monastery | Kibber | Chicham Bridge

As I have already mentioned above, for day 1 we rented an activa to visit the three places i.e., Key Monastery, Kibber Village and Chicham Bridge. Reason for renting an activa for visiting these points is, roads are smooth, well-built and are located at a shorter distance from Kaza. Well, this was our choice, if you feel like renting a bike or a bullet, you can!

Key Monastery, Here We Come!

Located at a distance of approx 14 km from Kaza, Key Monastery or Key Gompa is said to be the largest monastery in Spiti Valley. This day, I was finally at the much-celebrated attraction and the picture of what I have been looking at while doing research on Spiti Valley. Even though I have visited a number of monasteries, but this was the most spectacular thing I have seen. Stepping inside the monastery, I didn’t want to do anything, but just sit at a place and feel the silence and peace that was there in the air. Every temple that you visit inside the monastery will fill you with sanctity and trust me, you wouldn’t feel like leaving the place. The walls of the temples here are covered with beautiful murals and paintings that best depict the 14th-century monastic architecture holding a significant Chinese influence. After exploring the entire monastery, a special butter tea was served to us by one of the monks.

Note: Key monastery also provides an accommodation facility. So you can get a room along with three meals (lunch, dinner and breakfast) at INR 250/- per day cost. What could be a much better way to enjoy the spirituality of the Gompa and live with the monks to get a unique experience in the hills?

Kibber Village, the Most Silent of All!

After exploring Key Monastery, we departed for Kibber Village which is the most silent village with pre-historic houses that I came across. Literally, I didn’t find anybody in the village except the ones who were running the cafes. Kibber Village actually lies in the Wildlife Sanctuary which means you will be welcomed by a gate that has Kibber Wildlife Sanctuary written on it. As you enter the village you wouldn’t find any dedicated land for the animals, as the entire village is a sanctuary.

If you happen to visit Spiti Valley in winters and head to this village, there are sure shot chances of getting your eyes on the Snow Leopard with other wild animals, including blue sheep, ibex and more.

Travel to the Highest Village in the World- Kibber

Chicham Bridge, Asia’s Highest Bridge, 4,145 Meters

Chicham Bridge is located at a very short distance from Kibber and was constructed to connect Chicham Village with Kibber Village. One can even walk to the Chicham Bridge from Kibber Village. We didn’t spend much time at the bridge as it was getting dark and we had to return back to Kaza.

On our return to Kaza, we went for dinner in the market and back to New Circuit House (we were transferred here in the morning).

Day 2: A Thrilling Bullet Ride to Hikkim | Langza | Komic

Komic, adventurous experience to cherish for a lifetime.

This day we rented a bullet and decided to straightaway ride up to the world’s highest motorable village Komic (4,587 Meters and approx 18 km from Kaza) and visit other places while returning back to Kaza. The weather was amazing and we enjoyed the scenic view of all around and the prehistoric structures. However, the roads are pitted and bumpy, but a little adventure is what we were seeking, so we enjoyed it.

After 1-hour of the ride, we reached Komic and witnessed the World’s Highest Restaurant, sat and relaxed for a while admiring the beauty of this remote place in the Indian Himalayas.

Apart from the restaurant, the other attraction of Komic is Tangyud Monastery, one of the highest altitude Gompas in India which looks no less than a fortified castle.

Note: The accommodation options in Komic is limited and you would find only a handful of homestays.

Langza, the Magnificent Statue of Lord Buddha

While scrolling down my Instagram feed (before visiting Spiti Valley), I came across the beautiful pictures of the magnificent statue of Lord Budha a number of times. So, leaving Komic and heading to Langza , I was so excited as I was going to be standing right in front of this grand statue of Lord Buddha, sitting in the lap of the mighty Himalayas. I sat there for some time and gazed at the beauty which is a sight to behold. In addition to this, Langza is also known as the fossil village of Spiti and you would find people selling fossils of marine creatures and plants in a large number. After exploring Langza, we had a cup of black tea at a small cafe nearby and made our move to Hikkim.

Hikkim, Send Love From the World’s Highest Post Office!

Right after Langza, we visited Hikkim for yet another most Instagrammed picture i.e. World’s Highest Post Office (4,400 Meters) and obviously this is what Hikkim is popular for. Also, there is a cafe, where you can take some refreshment. We had Maggi and a cup of tea. So, if you are there do not forget to get your own postcards, stamp them and send them to your near and dear ones. You need to walk down a little from the cafe to reach the post office. Once done with clicking pictures of the World’s Highest Post Office, we drove down back to Kaza.

On Our Way Back to Kaza

On returning, we were able to see a lovely aerial view of Kaza. Also, while entering Kaza gate, I came across the iconic heart of Spiti- ‘I LOVE SPITI’ which promotes- ‘No To Plastic’. The entire piece is made of discarded plastic bottles and wrappers gathered from across Kaza. The brilliant artwork was an initiative taken by Spiti Ecosphere . If you are in Spiti and want to be a part of this kind ‘No To Plastic’ campaign, then volunteer with Spiti Ecosphere to help accomplish more such objectives.

We stopped at places to click pictures and soon reached Kaza. We handed over the bullet and had dinner at Cafe Zomsa. We had to wake up early the next day to catch the bus for Shimla that departs at 7:00 AM. The journey from Kaza to Shimla was tiring, but again, it was a part of the adventure. After reaching Shimla, the entire day we rested and at night boarded the bus for Delhi at 10:30 PM.

Note: The bus from Kaza to Shimla isn’t a direct one. After reaching Reckong Peo, you need to wait for an hour or so, to catch another bus for Shimla. You can even board a bus to Manali which departs from Kaza at 4:00 AM.

Spiti Valley, We Will Come Again!

Leaving the place after 6 days was very difficult. I don’t want to sound overdramatic, but honestly, I felt like crying as I didn’t want to leave the place. It was one of the most beautiful and memorable journeys and I still miss those days and nights spent in Spiti Valley. The splendid serenity and stunning beauty of the mountains will remain etched on my heart forever until we meet again.

If you too have a zeal to explore such remote arid mountains, then you should visit Spiti Valley at least once in a lifetime. The Higher you go, the Happier you will be!

Spiti Valley appears to be beautiful all throughout the year. However, the best time to visit is between June and September. In addition to this, it depends on what you would like to see when on a trip to Spiti. If it is the yellow and purple flowers along with a bit of greenery then plan a trip between June and September. For seeing Spiti Valley covered with a thick sheet of snow, then consider visiting between December and March.

Dhankar gompa or the Dhankar monastery is located at a height of 12,774 feet above sea level. It is one of the nine principal Buddhist sacred shrines of the region. 7. Lahaul Valley

Lahaul valley is perched at an altitude of 2,745 above sea level. It is a major centre of Buddhist art and culture and is home to various monasteries. The region essentially consists of large glaciers and high mountain peaks. It also has many photogenic lakes and passes. Tourists can indulge in various adventure sports in the region.

Langza village is located at a distance of 16 kilometers to the north of Kaza. How to Reach Spiti Valley?

There are two routes to reach the Spiti Valley.

The first one is through Shimla. From major cities, travel to Delhi or Chandigarh. Overnight buses operate between these cities to Shimla. From Shimla, regular buses operate to the Kinnaur district. Apart from buses shared taxis and rental private cars are also available from Shimla.

The second route runs via Manali. Regular buses operate between Manali and Kaza through the Kunzum pass and the Rohtang pass. Share taxis and rental private cars are also available from Manali.

Best Time to Visit Spiti Valley

Depending on your route, the best time to visit the Spiti Valley varies. During April and May, the snow in the region starts to melt. Many roads like the one from Kaza to Losar opened while others like the road from Kunzum Pass to Manali remain closed until June. Thus, this time is best for visiting Spiti & also an ideal time to visit Manali & nearby places. Many adventure enthusiasts make plans for their trek to Spiti around this time. The snow-capped mountains are visible and make a memorable view for the tourists. If certain road blockages and low tourist count is not a problem, the month of April and May is the best time to visit Spiti Valley. So, book Spiti Valley hotels right away.
