2022 Kia Carnival: Why We’ll Probably Buy This Minivan, But Not the Top Trim Level

2022 Kia Carnival Prestige

Table of Contents

As the mom of three, I can technically do without a third row.

In fact, we recently purchased a pickup truck as our daily driver/family car. But the time is quickly approaching when the grandparents who live with us will also need to ride with us, and there’s nothing like a minivan for easy in-and-out for everyone involved. So, we’ve been talking about what to get when that time comes. Having recently driven two different competing vehicles, I was excited to experience the new kid on the block, the 2022 Kia Carnival, which has a starting price of about $32,000 and tops out at about $46,000.

2022 Kia Carnival Prestige

The Very Best Dash

My husband and I both fell in love with the 2022 Kia Carnival driver’s display and infotainment system. The seamless integration of both in a super clean dashboard felt very calming. There is zero clutter, and the infotainment screen doesn’t stick up above the dash. The camera display quality for the backup camera was top-notch, and we both really loved the blindspot camera views in the driver’s display.

It is clear from the design and features that this is a brand new vehicle. Kia didn’t take the Sedona and ask what they could change or add to make it cooler than before. They scratched it completely and designed a whole new vehicle. I think this contributes to the uncluttered feel of the dash and center console… new tech isn’t just added on, it’s at home.

2022 Kia Carnival Prestige

Less Minivan. More SUV.

While Kia doesn’t call this vehicle either, it’s pretty obvious from the sliding doors and interior layout that this is a minivan. But it’s not obvious from the outside or from the driving experience. And this is one of the things we loved about the Carnival. On the outside, it looks more like a full-size SUV. It is a little more squared off, and the trim and accents are very strategically placed to give it that big SUV look, while still affording passengers with a low ride height for easy entry and exit.

2022 Kia Carnival Cargo Space

A True Multipurpose Vehicle (Hello, Tow Capacity!)

Thanks to the flexibility of the Carnival , I can totally see this MPV being way more than a family hauler. The back seats go down very easily and I feel like that added cargo space just screams “Take me to Costco!” The V6 engine gives the vehicle plenty of get-up-and-go so you don’t feel like you’re driving a little van. We got to drive it in some pretty heavy rain and wind during a tropical storm on the Texas gulf coast and this multipurpose vehicle (MPV) did great! I was also impressed by the vehicle’s ability to tow up to 3,500 lbs. That means you could haul a small popup camper or a small boat without a problem. If you’re not sure what that looks like, this is a super handy guide .

2022 Kia Carnival Prestige Vip Seats

Why We Wouldn’t Buy the Prestige

Our first impression of the VIP seats in the second row of the Prestige model was that they were amazing. Game changers even. Then we tried to enter the third row and discovered there is no quick slide and release for the VIP seats. You have to manually slide them forward (and most of the time we had to actually sit in the seats to get them to slide) then use the power recline button to very slowly lean the seats forward to allow someone to enter, then use the button again to set the seatbacks to the upright position. That, or third-row passengers have to crawl in and sneak down the middle, which doesn’t work great when car seats are installed in the second row.

Next, we figured out that to recline the VIP seating and put up the footrests (oh so comfy!), the seats need to be pushed toward the middle of the vehicle and all the way back against the third row. This renders the third row completely useless.

I say all of this not to complain (seriously, those seats are so comfy I could nap in them!) but to point out that they won’t be practical for a family that needs the third row. And this is the reason why we would step down to the LX trim level and choose the 8-passenger configuration for more flexibility for our family.

Husband Approved

We all know it’s the woman who picks the car, but it really helps if the family vehicle is something dad likes too. I’m a truck girl myself. I picked out our truck, and these days I hardly get to drive it because my husband loves it. I’ve been telling him I really wanted to check out the Kia Carnival before we decided on a 3-row vehicle to replace our sedan, and I was shocked that he ended up liking it even more than I did. Over and over on our trip, he praised the Carnival and all the thoughtful touches and features Kia included. He liked it enough that I think he might not mind driving it now and then so I can drive my truck. 😉

Disclosure: Kia loaned me the Carnival for this trip so I could experience using it like we would for a family vacation. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

The Van Life VIP List: 16 Dream Vans You’ll Want to Live In

elite vip travel mini van

If you’re considering living the van life , there’s a lot that goes into choosing the right type of van for your needs. If you want a campervan, but don’t know where to start, we’ve got you covered!

When I first started living the “van life”, it was actually in a Toyota Prius! That was back in 2015, before I knew van life was even a thing. I bought my first van in 2018, a Chevy Astro Conversion minivan that my partner Tom and I lived in for three years while also splitting time on our sailboat.

Then, in 2021, I finally got the van of my dreams: A 2021 Mercedes Sprinter van which we are currently building out ourselves. If you want to follow along with our build journey and see what materials we used, go here: My Sprinter Van Build.

Table of Contents

1) Mercedes Sprinter Van

man standing in van with sprinter van window shades

  • Price: $35,000-$65,000
  • Drivetrain: 2WD and 4WD
  • Roof: Low, Medium and High

A Mercedes Sprinter is considered one of the best vans for van life, even though it has a heftier price tag than similar vans in its class. We chose a Sprinter van as our second camper van due to its 4×4 capabilities, clearance, diesel engine and resale value. As of 2023, new Mercedes Sprinters come in RWD or AWD. The 4×4 model is only available in used Sprinters.

With a Sprinter van, you can choose between two drivetrains, a diesel or gas engine, and 21 variations of the cargo van.

Mercedes Sprinter camper vans have higher-than-average off-road capabilities, are easy to handle and boast the highest payload in their class.

You’ll see many Class B RV manufacturers such as Airstream and Winnebago going with Mercedes Sprinter vans.

Sprinter vans are known for roomy passenger quarters, high-quality materials and an abundance of safety features. The largest cargo van offers more room than the biggest Ford Transit.

Their biggest downside is their expense. The sales price as well as the maintenance and repair costs are higher than other vans. Keep in mind, you’ll usually have to take Sprinters to a Mercedes dealership if you have any problems on the road.

You’ll find even used Mercedes Sprinter vans costing a pretty penny.

Examples: Want to see a Sprinter campervan in action? Check out this incredible 4×4 off-grid Sprinter van , or these 18 custom Sprinter van conversions.

2) Ford Transit

man standing on top of a Ford Transit Campervan conversion and a desert sunset

  • Price: $36,000-$46,000
  • Drivetrain: 2WD and AWD

If you love looking at photos of camper vans, you’ve probably noticed quite a few Ford Transits. These are some of the best vans to live in thanks to their roomy interiors, smooth handling and choice between 2WD and AWD.

You can also choose between a gas or a diesel engine, and three different powertrains, two of which are new in 2020.

There are plenty of safety features in the Ford Transit, including forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking, with lots of options available as upgrades.

The interior cargo space of the largest Ford Transit is smaller than a Mercedes Sprinter, but larger than a Dodge Promaster.

Reviewers say the Ford Transit is pleasant to drive, with a modern interior and low freeway noise.

Van lifers consider this one of the best vans to live in thanks to its lower costs to maintain and repair.

Examples: Check out this video of a beautiful Ford Transit campervan conversion that costs under $1,000.

For a look at a custom-built, fully-completed Ford Transit campervan, check out Tim and Katie on YouTube !

3) Dodge Ram Promaster

Dodge Ram Promaster campervan conversion with awning at a campsite with grass and rocks

  • Price: $32,000-$42,000
  • Drivetrain: 2WD, Front
  • Roof: Low and High

The Dodge Ram Promaster has a few qualities that make it one of the best vans to live in. For one, it’s wider than its two main rivals, making it easier to sleep across the width of the van. Some say a person 6′ tall can fit width-wide in this van, which opens up a lot more space for a kitchen or dining table.

The Ram Promaster is the most “square” of the major cargo van options, meaning building it out is slightly less complicated than the Ford Transit or Mercedes Sprinter and their rounded curves.

Another main point is its tight turning radius and easy maneuverability.

The Dodge Promaster comes with just one type of engine: a 3.6 liter, V-6. According to CarAndDriver track tests , the Promaster is the slowest compared to the Ford Transit and the Mercedes Sprinter.

Other issues to think about is the Promaster lacks driver-assist and safety features offered by the Transit and the Sprinter. Both Edmunds and Car and Driver say the vehicle doesn’t have a refined feel when driving, with a loose-feeling steering wheel.

Examples: These two custom van conversion companies are offering Dodge Promaster conversions for under $60,000.

Check out the popular Travato campervan by Winnebago , built on a Dodge Ram Promaster chassis.

4) Ford E-Series (Econoline)

Ford Econoline campervan conversion in the forest

  • Price: $4,000-$15,000
  • Drivetrain: 2WD, Rear

The Ford E-Series is one of the best vans for van life if you’re planning on doing a lot of stealth camping . These nondescript white cargo vans are often used by construction workers, electricians and plumbers.

Ford replaced the Econoline with the Ford Transit in 2014, except for the cutaway version, which Sportsmobile now uses for its 4×4 van conversions.

You won’t be able to stand up in a Ford E-Series van unless you install a pop-top, but its large, boxy interior gives you plenty of room for a bed, kitchen and storage.

Ford E-Series vans come with the choice of both gasoline or diesel engines, with three different gas engines to choose from.

Some downsides to this van is it doesn’t come with safety features, and one reviewer claims it has loose steering and soft brakes.

Nevertheless, the Ford Econoline vans are Sportsmobile’s van of choice. The van conversion company builds its Classic 4×4 van using the Ford E-Series.

Example: Check out photos of the Sportsmobile E-Series van in this post about 4×4 camper vans. You can also check out how this couple converted an E-250 on the cheap.

5) Chevrolet Express/GMC Savana

4x4 Chevy Express campervan, one of the best vans to live in, parked on a hillside with a mountain view

  • Price: $33,000-$40,000
  • Drivetrain: 2WD

The Chevy Express and GMC Savana are basically the same van with different names. Like the Ford E-Series, these are some of the best vans to live in for urban stealth camping.

You’ll find a powerful engine on these vans, but there is no high roof option like the Ford Transit, Sprinter or Promaster. The look of the van is also a bit outdated – the last body redesign was in 1996!

Choose between several trim options with this van. You can even get an extended version of either the 2500 or 3500 versions, giving you more living space.

A safety package on the brand new Chevy Express and GMC Savana vans requires an upgrade that’s a little over $2,000.

If you’re craving windows in your campervan build, you can choose between a cargo van and a passenger van for either one of these options.

Need a little more headroom? You can find Chevy Express and GMC Savana conversion vans, which have a higher fiberglass roof and plush interiors. We’ll go more into conversion vans to live in later in this article.

6) Chevy Astro Van

Gray and white Chevy Astro van, one of the best vans to live in for stealth camping, near the Golden Gate Bridge

  • Price: $2,000-$7,000
  • Drivetrain: 2WD or AWD

The Chevy Astro van is one of the best affordable vans you can live in. These sturdy cargo and passenger vans have a cult following, with people either jacking them up to make them off-road capable, or lowering them.

Chevy Astro vans were built between the years of 1985 and 2005. They were sold along with the GMC Safari. Both vans are nearly identical with different names and branding.

I’m partial to Chevy Astro vans because I lived in one! I purchased my Astro conversion van for $6,000 off Craigslist with only 57,000 miles.

Some people report finding these vans online for just $2,000-$3,000, and they often run up to 250,000 miles.

A Chevy Astro van only works if you’re okay with a limited amount of space inside your van and semi-poor gas mileage. Cargo and passenger Chevy Astros have a barebones, outdated interior, but that’s what you get for an older, affordable van.

Get the AWD version if you’re planning on driving on sandy beaches, down muddy roads or through snow. I can’t imagine being without my AWD!

Chevy Astro conversion vans with a fiberglass roof are hard to find, but if you do get lucky, you’ll have a foot or so more of headrooom.

I just loved my Chevy Astro camper and think it’s one of the best vans to live in for the price.

Example: See how I turned my Chevy Astro into an off-road van.

7) Dodge/Chevy/Ford Conversion Van

Brown Dodge conversion van with side doors open to see van interior, one of the best vans to live for affordability

  • Price: $1,500-$28,000, depending on year
  • Roof: Medium

A conversion van is a Dodge, Chevy or Ford van that an outside company turned into a luxury passenger vehicle.

Usually, these best vans to live in are decked out with a TV and VCR, unique overhead lighting, captain’s chairs and a high fiberglass roof.

They were built for leisure travel, so you’ll often find conversion vans with low mileage, stashed in someone’s garage for years. At least that’s what happened to me!

You can find older conversion vans for van life for pretty cheap using Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist or Ebay.

Newer conversion vans are pretty expensive and may be upwards of $30,000! But if you don’t mind living in an older van, you can find great deals on these vans.

The conversion vans you’ll typically see are full-size vans, but on a rare occasion, you will find a Chevy Astro conversion van, which is what I have.

We think conversion vans are some of the best vans to live in because they’re affordable, have built-in cabinetry, fun lighting and even window shades !

Example: My friends over at GnomadHome bought a conversion van for just $1,500 and converted it into a camper!

8) Nissan NV 200

Nissan NV 200 camper with pop top and awning extended

  • Price: $24,000-$25,000
  • Drivetrain: 2WD, front

The Nissan NV200 is an affordable and stealth small van you can live in. This cargo van gets great gas mileage (24-26 mpg on the highway), fits into a compact parking space and is really easy to drive.

If you’re looking for an affordable van to live in, the Nissan NV200 is the cheapest in its class of compact cargo vans.

Each Nissan NV200 is powered by a 4-cylinder, 2.0-liter engine, which offers less power than similar vans, like the Ford Transit Connect and Mercedes Metris. That means it also hauls less weight than other vans of a similar size.

However, its cargo space is above average for its class, making it a great small van for van life.

The Nissan NV200 is the van of choice for conversion company Recon campers , which adds a pop-top to create an even roomier interior.

Example: Check out this couple’s super cheap Nissan NV200 van conversion.

9) Mercedes Metris

Mercedes Metris van for van life with a pop-up camper on top, rated one of the best small vans to live in

  • Price: $34,000-$37,000
  • Drivetrain: 2WD, rear

The Mercedes Metris is a new van to the North American market, being introduced in 2015. What’s cool about this powerful little van is that you can order the Weekender camper package right from the dealership.

The Weekender includes a pop-top roof with a bed that can sleep two, a sliding rear bench seat that converts into a bed for two, and and front swivel seats. You can pay for even more upgrades or do them yourself.

This Mercedes Metris has a turbocharged 2.0-liter, 4-cylinder engine with a 7-speed transmission. The Mercedes Metris can carry more than the other vans with a maximum payload of 2,502 pounds.

But on the flip side, it is the most expensive compact cargo van, needs premium fuel, and the extended wheelbase is more difficult to park than smaller vans.

Example: Check out these Mercedes Metris camper conversions for some inspiration.

10) Ford Transit Connect

Woman posing with a Ford Transit Connect campervan in front of a mountain in Iceland

  • Price: $24,000-$29,000

The Ford Transit Connect is one of the best vans to live in if you’re looking for great gas mileage, a peppy engine and maneuverability.

This small campervan was introduced in 2012, which means you’ll find a lot of used vans on the market.

You can get two types of engines with this small camper van, a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder van, or a turbocharged 1.6-liter Ecoboost 4-cylinder. Maximum payload on this van is 1,620 pounds.

This is a very small van (the second smallest in this class) that doesn’t offer the same cargo space as some of its competitors.

Also, some people say this small camping van doesn’t have a lot of power but is comfortable to drive.

Example : Why I chose a Ford Transit Connect Camper for Van Life

11) Stepvan

The bright red stepvan parked near water is one of the best larger vans for van life

  • Price: $2,000-$70,000, depending on new or used

If you’re looking for even more space, you may think a stepvan is one of the best vans to live in. You’ll often see these boxy vehicles on the street working as delivery trucks. Think UPS or old milk delivery trucks.

A stepvan is a light-duty/medium-duty truck that got its name from a step leading up to the driver’s compartment. It was made to be driven either sitting down or standing up. Current stepvan manufacturers include General Motors, Ford and Freightliner trucks.

Choose between a gas or a diesel engine when looking at a step van for van life. These are also typically low-slung vans, which may not be best if you want to do a lot of off-roading.

The roomy interior of a stepvan means you’ll have plenty of space for things like a full kitchen, bathroom, bed, and workspace. There’s also no problem with standing up inside your van.

A stepvan also makes a great stealth camper as nobody will suspect you’re living in a bread truck!

Example: Single mom turns stepvan into adorable tiny home

12) Volkswagen Westfalia

Orange VW Westfalia camper with the pop topped and side door open

  • Price: $15,000-$45,000
  • Roof: Low with pop-top

I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention the Volkswagen Westfalia, long considered one of the best vans to live in by hippies and families alike.

Even though this van is slow, doesn’t like hills, and is overly expensive, it continues to be a favorite among van lifers.

Many love driving around a piece of history on wheels, I mean, who doesn’t love the look and style of an old VW Westfalia?

This is a great van for van life if you don’t want to put any money into converting your own van. The Westfalia comes with two comfortable captain’s chairs up front, a little kitchen with a stove , fridge and sink and a bed.

It also features a pop up roof so you can stand and walk around in your van.

Due to its iconic nature, this little van does keep its value in case you ever want to resell.

But if you want to go climb mountains, go off-roading or drive in snowy or sandy conditions, the VW Westfalia isn’t for you.

13. Toyota Sienna

Toyota Sienna Camper conversion

  • Price: $32,000-$55,000

The Toyota Sienna i s a popular minivan camper as it’s one of the only brand new vans available with All Wheel Drive. To boot, The newer (2001 and on) Siennas are exclusively hybrids, meaning you’ll get incredible gas mileage driving to far-flung destinations.

The Sienna is one of the best minivans for van life due to its roomy interior and length. Believe it or not, this minivan is longer than both the Ford Transit Connect and the Ram Promaster City .

However, it is the most expensive in its class. If you’re looking for a cheaper minivan, you may want to check out the Honda Odyssey and Chrysler Pacifica.

But if AWD is important to you, the Sienna is your only choice.

14) Winnebago Class B Campervans

  • Price: $140,000+

A trusted name in the RV world for decades, Winnebago has a wide range of options built on the Ram Promaster or Mercedes Sprinter chassis.

Models including the Solis, Travato, and Revel are popular choices for those ready to hit the road in comfort and style.

From basic builds to customizable colors and interiors, Winnebago is a great place to start if you’re in the market for a Class B RV for van life!

15) Storyteller Overland Class B Campervans

Storyteller Overland Mercedes Sprinter campervan with back doors open and two women laughing on the bed

  • Price: $181,000+
  • Drivetrain: AWD

Storyteller Overland offers sturdy rigs built for off-road and off-grid exploration. From beefy tires, modular interiors, and upgradable solar and exterior packages, Storyteller Overland has really dialed in their high-quality features.

Originally crafted on Sprinters, Storyteller Overland expanded into the Ford Transit campervan market when the AWD Transit Trail came onto the scene.

These Class B campervans are quite expensive, but they are RVIA certified, making them easy to insure and finance.

16) Thor Motorcoach Class B Campervans

  • Price: $125,000+
  • Drivetrain: 2WD (Promaster), AWD (Transit), and 4×4 (Sprinter)

Factors to Consider When Choosing The Best Van for Van Life

nemo patio blanket is great for outside a campervan

Here are some things to think about when looking for your perfect van:

Will you need to stand up in your van?

It’s not a necessity, but if you’re living full-time or traveling in your campervan often, standing room is nice to have! There are several high-roof options we’ll cover in the post below if this is something important to you.

How do you plan to use your van?

Will you take weekend trips, live full-time, or travel part-time?

Do you have sporting equipment or adventure gear that you’ll be bringing?

What you plan to do with your campervan can lead you to a model that will work for your needs.

4×4 vs. AWD vs. 2WD

Woman sitting inside a Chevy Astro, one of the best vans for van life

Do you plan to take your rig off-roading and into some difficult terrain?

4-wheel drive is helpful and sometimes required for those rough backroads. Lots of vanlifers get by with 2WD, but it can limit where you go. Keep in mind that many newer vans are all-wheel drive or 2WD, so if 4×4 is a must for you, you might want to consider older, used rigs.

People and Pets

How many people and animals will you need to comfortably fit in your campervan?

The amount of people, pets, and all of their belongings can change your options for van size and layout. While a minivan might be great for a solo van lifer, a family of four with a dog probably needs a longer and bigger van!

Pre-Built vs. DIY

Do you plan to build out your own rig or are you looking for something already finished?

There are plenty of blank canvases out there if you have a custom build in mind, but also lots of turnkey adventure vans ready to hit the road. We’ll link some great Class B RV options built on popular van models below.

Of course, the amount you want to spend will be a determining factor in what type of van you choose. But remember you don’t have to break the bank to get into the van life.

While the campervans you see on Instagram might be fancy Mercedes Sprinters or Ford Transits with $100,000 custom builds, you don’t have to spend a lot of money on your perfect van.

In fact, I bought my first van, Chevy Astro, with only 57,000 miles for $6,000 on Craigslist and made a few adjustments to make it an off-grid van. If you’re interested in going cheaper, here is a list of the most affordable campervans out there.

Considering all these factors, here are our picks for the best vans for van life.

Best Vans for Van Life Recap

Remember, the best van for van life is ultimately the one that fits your lifestyle, needs, and budget. Be open and adaptable and keep in mind you can update your van throughout your van life as things change.

Your perfect rig is out there. Take your time and enjoy the journey to find it!

Have you any idea how many of us live in Dodge Grand Caravans?

Guess you were the inspiration for this article https://www.thewaywardhome.com/dodge-grand-caravan-camper/#comment-206884-do you have a Jucy Van? Is there a group for owner of one, I will google it.

I’m looking for a car that fits the price but there are so many choices I don’t know which one is the best. Thank you for writing this article, it was really helpful for me. I will rely on your article to choose the best car.

After reading a lot of reviews I think I will choose Ford Transit Connect. Thank you for this article.

You omitted the VW Eurovan??

I too like the looks and simplicity of the Eurovan but be aware the van is twenty years old, made in Europe, so parts are hard to get and expensive (I know someone who had to pay for the shipping costs from Germany and that was SEVENTY dollars!) and there is a paucity of mechanics who know how to repair them (at this age many parts are wearing down) most VW dealers don’t know how. In the West Coast where there is a following, it’s easier to find a mechanic but if you take it cross country and it breaks down it may be hard to fix. To address this problem, Recon Campers made the Envy out of NV200 vans but they are no longer being produced. VW have class and style but as one person selling his VW said, “Now that schools are opening up, I have to go back to teaching, and won’t have time with my VW hobby ” (I am assuming he is meaning repairing it all the time!)

Looking great work dear, I appreciated you for this quality work. Nice post!! these tips may help me for future while i was searching i found another website that can be help you to know more visit:-https://commercialvansolutions.com/blog/2018/07/20/cargo-van-shelving-ideas/

Thanks for a great run down. I just wanted to point out that the VW Vanagon did come in a 4×4 version, the Syncro. They are rare but amazing.

Fabulous! I lived on a sailboat and 30’ TT but that changed with a car wreck. Very helpful analysis!

You are welcome! Sorry to hear about your car wreck. We also have a sailboat 🙂

You linked that homophobe-racist Amanda Keschner aka ArtVanGrow to highlight her Ford Transit van? WTF is wrong with you?

2024 Honda Odyssey Review

Christian Wardlaw

  • Configurable second-row seats are very useful
  • Packed with modern safety and tech features
  • Strong V6 engine and stable handling make it enjoyable to drive
  • Mediocre fuel economy
  • No power-folding third-row seats
  • Overly vigilant forward collision warning system is frustrating

What's new

  • The Odyssey is unchanged for 2024
  • Part of the fifth Odyssey generation introduced for 2018

Got kids? You need a minivan like the 2024 Honda Odyssey, especially if they're little and you're loading them into and out of child safety seats. Those sliding side doors will save your back, and minivans like the 2024 Odyssey have so much cargo space there is no need to pack light, or even with care. Just throw your stuff in and go. When you think about it, minivans are the ultimate active lifestyle vehicles, ready for whatever, whenever, unless it requires rock crawling or water fording. And you're not really planning to do any of that, are you?

Cost to Drive Cost to drive estimates for the 2024 Honda Odyssey EX 4dr Minivan (3.5L 6cyl 10A) and comparison vehicles are based on 15,000 miles per year (with a mix of 55% city and 45% highway driving) and energy estimates of $3.44 per gallon for regular unleaded in North Dakota.

Edmunds spotlight: magic slide seats.

Admittedly, Honda might be overselling its Magic Slide second-row seats. There's nothing magic about them. But they're terrific. You can slide the center seating section closer to the front seats to put a child closer to parents, or you can remove and store that section. Removing it turns the bench-style seat into two individual chairs. Alternatively, you can slide one of them over to create a large pass-through to the third-row seat, or you can slide them both toward the middle to put children closer to the middle of the minivan, where they're safer in a collision. So while they're not magic, Honda could easily call them Awesome Slide seats.

Competitors to consider

Few alternatives to the Odyssey exist, and each one offers something you can't get with the Honda. For example, the Chrysler Pacifica offers available all-wheel drive or a plug-in hybrid powertrain. The Kia Carnival has a sense of style and lounge-style second-row seating. The Toyota Sienna has a standard hybrid powertrain and available all-wheel drive. But we like the Odyssey, as you'll see by reading the Edmunds Expert Rating below.

What’s it like to live with?

When Honda last redesigned the Odyssey for the 2018 model year, Edmunds added one to its long-term testing fleet, putting 20,000 miles on the minivan in a year's time. The Odyssey hasn't changed much since then, so our findings still apply to the 2024 model. Be sure to read the Edmunds long-term road test of the Honda Odyssey to learn more.

Fuel Economy

Which odyssey does edmunds recommend.

When it comes to value, you can't beat the base Honda Odyssey EX . It is well equipped with everything you need and nothing you don't, though if you want some of the many upgrades available on more expensive versions of the Odyssey, and your budget allows it, by all means upgrade. But we'd stick with the cloth-lined EX and spend the savings on epic road trips.

elite vip travel mini van

Honda Odyssey vs. Chrysler Pacifica

Our favorite minivan is the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid for its plug-in hybrid powertrain. But among conventionally powered models, we think the Odyssey is more appealing than a Pacifica with a V6 engine. Though the Chrysler is available with all-wheel drive and offers Stow 'n Go seats that collapse into large storage wells under the minivan's floor, it otherwise comes up short compared to the Honda. Learn more about the Chrysler Pacifica from our long-term road test.

Honda Odyssey vs. Kia Carnival

The Kia Carnival replaced the Kia Sedona in 2022. It has a better sense of style than most minivans, comes with an excellent warranty, and offers unique second-row lounge seats for a VIP travel experience. However, the Carnival isn't as rewarding to drive as the Honda Odyssey, and we've found some of the onboard tech to miss the mark. Still, if the main reason you don't want a minivan is because of the styling, check out the Kia, which looks more like a crossover SUV inside and out.

Honda Odyssey vs. Toyota Sienna

Thanks to its standard hybrid powertrain, the Toyota Sienna is far more fuel-efficient than the Honda Odyssey. In addition, you can get a Sienna with all-wheel drive, a feature unavailable on the Odyssey. However, you cannot remove the Sienna's second-row seats, and that limits the minivan's maximum cargo space and utility. The Sienna's drivetrain also lacks power and makes plenty of noise. You can learn more by reading the Edmunds long-term road test of a 2021 Sienna.

2024 honda odyssey first impressions.

Ryan ZumMallen

As the go-to minivan for scores of families over the last 30-plus years, the Honda Odyssey has a strong reputation and devoted following among the minivan faithful. It's got loads of interior space, modern comfort features and — believe it or not — feels pretty good to drive. The current version of the Odyssey debuted in 2018, and while it's expected to return mostly unchanged for 2024, some key differences could arrive.

First is the styling. Honda has recently redesigned its sedans and crossovers. They feature slim, oblong headlights and wide, gaping grilles that give Honda a distinct design language. In 2024 the Odyssey could join its stablemates with its own take on this look in order to keep things fresh, even though we'd expect the vehicle itself to remain mostly the same under the skin. Rumors also persist of Honda developing a mild hybrid powertrain that could go into the Odyssey, but it's likely that Honda will wait for a full redesign to implement this kind of powerplant.

In any case, the 2024 Odyssey should continue its run as one of the top minivans you can buy. There are impressive rivals: the plug-in Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid and the Toyota Sienna , which is now fully hybrid. Finally the Kia Carnival has some outstanding features too. Stay tuned to this page for more information on the 2024 Honda Odyssey as we learn it.

If the Odyssey is graced with new looks for 2024, it should only help the well-rated but aging minivan stay near the top of the pack. Check back with us here for updates on the 2024 Odyssey.

Mini Van Life: 5 Best Family-Haulers for Life on the Road

1988 mitsubishi delica camper van driving along lakeshore

Minivans can be super adventure vehicles and great platforms for life on the road. Yes, you read that right — minivans.

While overlooked by many, a minivan’s inherent practicality, versatility, affordability, and comfort rank among the top for any vehicle. If you’re willing to let go of your preconceived stereotypes and explore options for a smaller adventure van, you might find some uncommonly good options out there.

So, which are the best? Here are our top five picks for the best minivans that can be great adventure vehicles and are perfect for life on the road.

5 Mini Van Life Top Picks

Toyota sienna — much more than your typical family-hauler.

2022 Toyota Sienna Woodland Edition minivan parked in front of a cabin in the woods

The Toyota Sienna is probably not what you think of when you hear “life on the road.” However, these vans have a reputation for longevity, reliability, and dependability.

Whether it’s an early model from the late 1990s or the top-of-the-line AWD hybrid variants sold new today, the Sienna is gaining traction among van lifers and adventure travelers.

In fact, Toyota has taken note of this and now offers the Woodland variant for 2022. The Sienna Woodland turns this minivan into more of an SUV thanks to increased ground clearance and electronic on-demand AWD . Granted, it’s only an additional 0.6 inches of lift, but more is more.

You also get roof rails with crossbars, a 1,200W JBL stereo, and an AC power outlet for most household items. Toyota will also donate $250 to the National Environmental Education Fund (NEEF) for every Woodland edition it sells.

The Sienna also comes in a Hybrid trim with AWD and offers 35 combined mph. The van’s rear seats fold into the floor for extra space and versatility. Plus, the interior is lavish and ultra-comfortable.

4wd vs awd: 4wd jeep gladiator

4WD vs. AWD: How to Choose the Right Adventure Vehicle for You

So, you’re ready to buy an adventure vehicle? Awesome! Let’s look at 4WD vs. AWD and how to choose the right one for your new adventure rig. Read more…

Say you’re not looking to spend $50,000 on a new AWD Sienna. There are loads of older versions available at much lower prices. This entry cost can allow you to focus more on building the van’s interior to suit your needs.

A Sienna isn’t as capable as an SUV, but that doesn’t mean you’re relegated to the tarmac. Aftermarket manufacturers sell small lift kits for these vans, allowing them to fit bigger all-terrain tires, so you don’t just have to stick to the highways. This extra height will also enable access to more trailheads, kayaking spots, or remote campsites previously out of reach.

With its longstanding reputation for reliability, its spacious, versatile interior, and with plenty of creature comforts, the Sienna is a fantastic choice for a road tripper.

Ford Transit Connect — Unlimited Conversion Options

Tasha Rivard standing in front of her Ford Transit Connect, adapted to the mini vanlife

Now on its second generation in North America, the Ford Transit Connect is a minivan that can double as a super travel setup. If any of the vans on this list are “sporty,” the Transit Connect would be the driving enthusiast’s choice.

They handle better than anticipated, and while they’re not exactly a sports car, they can be fun to drive . And, since you can buy these vehicles pretty much any way you want from the factory — including with or without rear seats or windows — they offer up a blank canvas for the vagabond van life.

These vehicles first appeared in the U.S. as a 2009 model (earlier versions sold in Europe first). And they’re easy to find used and relatively inexpensive. However, Ford only offers them in front-wheel-drive, so they’re best for on-road or mild forest-road travel only.

Inside view of Tasha Rivard's custom Ford Transit Connect converted to mini vanlife

But if you’re sticking to highways and byways, it can be a great travel platform. The 2014-2023 second-gen Transit Connect comes in two lengths. Seek out the long-wheelbase version for a more comfortable minivan life on the road.

There are several companies building these into campers, including Ursa Minor , a Portland, Oregon-based outfitter that makes a pop-top version for long-wheelbase versions of the 2014+ Transit Connects.

Transit Connects are all powered by fuel-efficient four-cylinder engines, with older versions getting a 2.5L non-turbo powerplant. The newer ones have a 2.5L or 2.0L mill for more power.

A 1.6-liter EcoBoost turbo was available for a brief period but only produced in low numbers. Certainly not rocketships by anyone’s definition, but trips to the gas pump are seriously less painful than in most vans.

The combination of utility, driving dynamics, and availability make these minivans a good platform for life on the road . Plus, the extensive network of Ford dealers means parts and service are easy-peasy.

Recently, Ford announced that it would stop importing the Transit Connect in the U.S. at the end of 2023 but will continue shipping to Europe and other countries.

Mitsubishi Delica Star Wagon & Space Gear — All-Star Mini Van Life Personality

Mitsubishi Delica Star Wagon and Space Gear is perfect for the mini vanlife

The Mitsubishi Delica launched in the 1960s. The name is a portmanteau of “delivery” and “car.” However, it didn’t become an iconic van until the 1986 Delica Star Wagon came along.

That van, which never sold in North America, paired a unibody car chassis with a rugged 4WD system — complete with a low-range four-wheel-drive system that enabled it to go anywhere.

There were a dizzying array of versions: low roof, high roof, glass tops, winter-themed Chamonix versions, models with bull bars, bench seats, captain’s chairs, and even 12V coolers.

In 1994, the Delica Space Gear came out. It got a more rounded-off minivan shape but didn’t lose its versatility, capability, or ability to become a great camper or travel vehicle. These vans also offered a few different gasoline or turbodiesel engines.

The Star Wagons were pokey but can still cruise at 65 mph — it just takes a while to get there. Space Gear 1994 and later models offered up more powerful 3.0L V6 engines or 2.8L turbodiesels that are much more comfortable cruisers.

mitsubishi delica space gear

While the Mitsubishi Delica was never officially sold in North America, they can be imported into the U.S. — as long as they’re 25 years old or more — and easily registered in most states —  Maine and Rhode Island are currently the exceptions .

The combination of versatile interior dimensions, available overbuilt driveline components, and being sold globally make the Delica a marvelous choice for life on the road. Perhaps the best van life configuration would be a 1994+ Delica Space Gear with the 2.8L turbodiesel, a high-roof setup, with a long wheelbase.

Nevertheless, foreign-market vehicles aren’t without some challenges. Parts availability is scarcer than your run-of-the-mill minivans. However, Canada has a number of great shops that often have parts on hand. Canada has a 15-year import rule, so these vans have been there longer than the U.S.

Mitsubishi Delica 4x4 Van

Some parts, such as brake pads and rear brake rotors, are the same as Mitsubishi’s Montero SUV, which was sold in the United States. For many, however, the Delica’s pros outweigh the cons, and these quirky minivans remain a darling of the overland travel set globally.

In fact, I own the 1994 Delica Space Gear pictured here and used to own the white 1989 Delica Star Wagon, also pictured here.

Volkswagen Vanagon — Minivan Life G.O.A.T.

Volkswagen Vanagon minivan is a classic platform ideal for the mini vanlife

This almost goes without saying, but the VW Vanagon is a classic. Available in 2WD and 4WD versions (called Syncros), the Vanagon is one iconic minivan. These vans have their roots tied to the original Microbus, which is the granddaddy of minivans. People were using these for van life well before van life was a thing.

Vanagons have been the darling of travelers worldwide for decades. Customized 4WD Syncro versions command a premium — sometimes well into the $70,000 range — due to their go-everywhere capability and high-end camperized interiors. When equipped with a pop-top camper, such as a Westfalia, they command even more money.

Scads of these have been turned into adventuremobiles over the years, with the best-known customs being done by Westfalia. Even 2WD versions can be expensive, but it’s a proven platform with lots of aftermarket support.

The Vanagons aren’t known to be quite as reliable as some of the Japanese vans, but they have their own rugged personality and capability. Of all the vans on this list, this is the model with the most experience with campers living out of them.

VW-bus

Depending on where you live, these vans have over 20 model years to choose from, with myriad engine choices. None are going to be particularly rapid, but there’s an ultra-loyal community of Vanagon owners globally — many of which are more than willing to lend a hand if needed.

For those looking for more thrust, some owners even swap out the old VW engines for more modern and powerful Subaru powerplants to wake these German vans up from a performance perspective.

The Vanagon is a timeless classic; a minivan before minivans were, well, minivans. If one vehicle on this list personified minivan life on the road, the Vanagon would be it.

Chrysler Pacifica — Stylish, Fuel Efficient, AWD

2021 chrysler pacifica towing a boat in front of a lake

I recently spent a week with a new Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid, and I have to say, I was totally surprised and impressed by this vehicle. I grew up with a mid-’80s Dodge Voyager and rode in a 1990s Chrysler Town & Country from Minnesota to Mexico City in 1994. This is not the Chrysler van of yore with fake woodgrain and cheesy hubcaps. Pacificas are roadtrip machines!

The latest 2017-to-present Pacifica offers extraordinary levels of comfort and livability. Like the Sienna, the rear seat tumbles into the floor. Remove the middle row captain’s chairs to open up the Pacifica’s interior into a gargantuan place. Now there’s room to camp, hang out, or do whatever mini van lifers do.

cargo loaded inside back of Chrysler Pacifica

I was able to remove those seats, lay out a double-wide sleeping bag, and still had scads of room for gear. I could even watch TV or play games on the monitors located in the front seats’ headrests! Plus, my Hybrid model had a panoramic glass roof, which would be amazing for stargazing.

Let’s not forget that the front seats were heated, air-cooled, and ultra-comfortable. Factor in a world-class infotainment system, and you’ve got one heck of a vehicle that just happens to be a minivan.

dual video monitors inside chrysler pacifica mini vanlife

The more time I spent in the van, the more I thought about how it could be a great full-time travel vehicle with the right buildout inside. Even if you went barebones with an interior build, this thing was so good on the highway — and comfortable, too! The miles just passed by without fatigue or anything.

The fact the Hybrid model gets up to 82 MPGe or 30 mpg on gasoline isn’t bad, either. If you have to have AWD, there’s a Pacifica for you, too. It’s powered by a 3.6L V6 making 287 horsepower.

Fuel economy isn’t hybrid-like, but it does offer up that AWD capability. And yes, you can find small lifts for more ground clearance and larger tires .

Chrysler was the originator of the modern minivan as we know it. And after driving the new Pacifica, I’d say they’ve still got it.
