Duluth Woman’s 55th Annual Tour Of Homes And Gardens
DULUTH, Minn. — A local tour of homes and gardens captures the imagination.
The day was overcast Wednesday morning, but the homes were bright and beautiful at the Duluth Woman’s Club’s 55th Annual Tour of Homes and Gardens.
In spite of the rain, many gathered under umbrellas and parkas to catch a glimpse of some of the most distinguished homes in Duluth. The homes varied from modern open concept designs to historic restoration projects.
One home on the tour is owned by Ryan Arola who designed his custom-built home. The building of the home was a joint effort with his wife. Ryan designed the outside, while she focused on the interior.
“We took a year to design the house and we really took our time and got it as close to right as you can. It’s never perfect. We use every room in the house everyday with no real wasted space,” said Arola.
Even rain could not dampen the enjoyment of those in attendance. Local resident Angela O’Hara makes an annual event out of the tour with her mom and aunts coming to visit.
“It’s a great way to get out. Hear stories, have lunch, and it ends up being a full day. It’s a great event. Great to support Duluth Woman’s Club. We enjoy doing it every year,” said O’Hara.
Proceeds from the tour are used to support the operational costs of the Woman’s Club.

Duluth historic properties tour kicks off Sunday
The self-guided tour runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., with a noon start time at first presbyterian church..

DULUTH — Elise Larsen's home has changed since she and her family moved in.

Six years ago, the large window in the stairwell was rotted and massively leaking water inside their home, at 201 Ridgewood Road. There were cracks in the stucco, the interior plaster walls and the leaded-glass windows panes, and the front facade was water-logged, among other issues.
Larsen and her husband, Joel, have repaired the stucco wall, rebuilt the large stairwell window and repainted the exterior to match its Spanish Colonial Revival style.
Built in 1927 by Francis Fitzgerald, the Congdon neighborhood home is one of six featured on the Duluth Preservation Alliance’s Annual Historic Properties Tour.

“It brings us immense joy to share the history and beauty of our home with others,” Larsen said. The self-guided tour runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.

This year’s historic properties are:
- Mallman House, 19 N. 43rd Ave. E., built in 1889
- First Presbyterian Church, 300 E. Second St., built in 1891
- Morgan Park Company House, 1051 84th Ave. W., built in 1913
- Weiss House, 201 Ridgewood Road, built in 1927
- Garfield News Building, 1604 W. Superior St., built in 1938
- Park Point Street Car House, 1229 Minnesota Ave., converted around 1939
“The biggest draw is the Ridgewood House, that classic East Side mansion that we all want to take a peek into,” Duluth Preservation Alliance President Blake Romenesko said, but his personal favorite is the Mallman House. Originally built for mining engineer John Mallman, the property had lost “all essence of its Victorian past” before the current owners restored it.

Other tour tidbits: First Presbyterian Church, another stop, is among the city's top 10 “endangered buildings,” according to the Duluth Preservation Alliance. Built in 1891 by architects Oliver Traphagen and Francis Fitzpatrick, it features Edwardian pendant lights, seven Tiffany stained-glass windows, a hidden playroom and rock fountains.
"First Pres is kind of this fortress that people drive by every day. ... We're not as foreboding as we look from the outside," church volunteer Kathy Peterson said in a 2022 News Tribune story.

Duluth has a rich selection of historical spaces, and tour options are shared by word of mouth.
The historic properties event is largely a fundraiser for Duluth Preservation Alliance, a private nonprofit, composed of community members aimed at protecting, preserving and enhancing the city's architectural heritage by way of educational presentations and tours.
Working and living in Duluth's intact historical buildings immerses you in the past, Romenesko said, and “that grounds our sense of where we're going in the future.”
