Cruise to Tauranga, New Zealand

Things to do in tauranga.

A Hobbit home from a famous movie set

Hole Up in Hobbiton

Take an excursion to Middle Earth, or at least to the filming location of Bilbo's house in the Shire. Visit the 44 Hobbit Holes and The Green Dragon Inn to learn more about how "The Hobbit" and "The Lord of the Rings" were filmed here by New Zealander Sir Peter Jackson.

Grilled lamb on a white plate with roasted vegetables

Local Cuisine

Named the Bay of Plenty by Captain Cook, the Tauranga area has an abundance of products from the land and sea. Cruise to Tauranga and try lamb belly with burnt pumpkin or crusted local venison loin at a hip brasserie in downtown Tauranga. You'll find wine here, too, especially Pinot Noir — Mills Reef Winery has an on-site restaurant where you can order creative, Asian-inspired dishes alongside your glass of choice.

A jar of manuka honey

In the town of Paengaroa, about a half hour away, you'll find the production plant of Comvita, one of the world's leading producers of manuka honey. Take a couple jars home, or pick up beauty products made with the sweet stuff. Take home a bottle of your favorite wine from a local vineyard, or seek out local jade and sterling silver jewelry — Jens Hansen Ringmakers in Nelson even makes a replica of the One Ring from Tolkien's epic.

About Australia and New Zealand Cruises

Cruise between two countries famed for spectacular natural beauty, artistic cities and thrilling shore activities.

Imagine your dream cruise to Australia and New Zealand. It probably involves exploring the Great Barrier Reef, sipping coffee in Wellington and meeting a koala bear. All of these dreams can become reality on an Australia and New Zealand cruise. Enjoy other unexpected sights and thrills along the way. Drift along breathtaking fjords in New Zealand or visit UNESCO-listed sites on an Australia cruise that is sure to take in a dazzling and diverse itinerary.

Multiple choices are available to anyone planning an Australia and New Zealand cruise. First, select your ship, which could be a family-friendly craft with myriad activities for children or a smaller vessel for more intimate adventures. Then choose an itinerary, which could cover either nation individually or include both for maximum variety in your Australia and New Zealand cruise vacation.

The two nations are very different, yet both promise thrills, sightseeing and natural beauty to any cruise liner pulling into port. In Australia, experience underwater wonderlands when you dock at Cairns or spend the day exploring the chic city center of Sydney. Book in advance for a sought-after place on a circumnavigation Australia cruise, which circles around the whole island continent.

New Zealand cruises aren’t yet as popular as Australia cruises but they offer intoxicating mixtures of dramatic mountains and trendy, modern cities. Shore excursions could vary from trips to vineyards outside Auckland or swimming with dolphins near the Bay of Islands. Seek out itineraries that take you through Fiordland, where the cliffs, forests and waterfalls rival the fjords of Scandinavia. Circumnavigation cruises of New Zealand are also available with some operators.

Itineraries for both New Zealand and Australia cruises vary in length and number of ports. The shortest journeys are one-way and one-country, but to enjoy a round-trip or experience the beauty of both nations, plan for a longer Australia and New Zealand cruise vacation. October to April are the busiest months for Southern Hemisphere cruises, although Australia cruise lines operate throughout the year. The best time to cruise to New Zealand is during its summer months between December and February.

Auckland - Cruise Overview

There's designer shopping for all the family in Auckland's CBD retail precincts.

Central Business District (CBD), Auckland

By Fraser Clements

Auckland is the main hub for cruise ships to New Zealand. It is New Zealand's largest city, with a population of more than 1.3 million people.

Known as the city of sails, Auckland is built on a narrow strip of land surrounded by two harbours, dotted with 50 picturesque islands. For a popular metropolis, it certainly has a lot of natural beauty on offer. Volcanic cones, forest parks and stunning beaches are all within easy reach. In downtown Auckland you can enjoy world-class dining, shopping, and sights. Favourite cultural attractions include the Auckland Museum and the Auckland Art Gallery. If you've a mind to explore, visit the island volcano of Rangitoto, or head to Waiheke, known as 'the island of wine' each are within a 40 minute ferry ride of your port.

  • Experience New Zealand's rich history at the Auckland Museum . Daily Maori cultural performances include a welcome dance, poi dance, stick game, weaponry display and haka.
  • Kelly Tarlton's Antarctic Encounter & Underwater World (opens in new window) gets you up close and personal with sharks and penguins.
  • Explore the Viaduct Harbour area that hosted the America’s Cup; the waterfront boasts a wide array of excellent restaurants and cafes. Go sailing on an America’s Cup yacht, or if you're feeling brave, try bridge climbing, bungy jumping or jet boating !
  • Auckland offers outstanding shopping, with New Zealand labels like Karen Walker, Workshop, Zambesi and World. Head to High Street and Chancery Lane for the top shops.
  • Go sightseeing! Visit the summit of  Mount Eden , a dormant volcano that last erupted about 15,000 years ago or take a tour to the Waitakere Ranges or black sand beaches which lie to the west of the city.

Getting around

Cruise ships will berth at either Princes or Queens Wharf, which are both in downtown Auckland.

Auckland is the main hub for cruise ships to New Zealand. Upon arrival you will be greeted by friendly and helpful locals who can supply maps and important information such as where to find money changing facilities.

Both cruise ship berths in Auckland are handy to shopping, dining and all sorts of urban comforts. There are many transport options, and if you need local assistance, you can call into an i-SITE Visitor Information Centre. There’s one at the end of Princes Wharf.

Auckland's central city area is an easy walk from your cruise ship berth. Queen Street is the city's main street; but there's great dining all along the waterfront, and great shopping along city's side streets. Ask at the i-SITE Visitor Information Centre for tips on where to shop.

Public buses

It’s easy to get around the inner city and surrounding suburbs on Auckland’s modern public bus network. A bus to locations in the central city will cost approximately NZ$2, while bus trips to the suburbs will be approximately NZ$3-5.

Freephone 0800 10 30 80  or visit https://at.govt.nz/ (opens in new window) for timetables and fares.

Hop on Hop off Bus

You can visit Auckland's top attractions with Auckland Explorer Bus . Hop on at the waterfront stop, close to both cruise ship terminals, and hop off at attractions including Kelly Tarlton's, Auckland Museum, Mt Eden, the Auckland Zoo and the Sky Tower. Your pass also includes a free Devonport ferry ticket. Buses every 15-30 mins.

A one-day ticket costs $45 for adults and $20 for children (age 14 and under). For more, see www.explorerbus.co.nz (opens in new window)

Taxis are available to take you into the centre of Auckland from Princes or Queens Wharf. Corporate Cabs can be contacted on  (09) 377 0773 , or visit online at www.corporatecabs.co.nz (opens in new window)

Corporate Cabs accepts New Zealand dollars and major credit cards.

It’s a good idea to book rental cars in advance. Find a rental car  in Auckland.

Fullers offer ferry services between downtown Auckland, the historical suburb of Devonport on Auckland's north shore, and the nearby islands of Waiheke and Rangitoto. One way tickets cost from NZ$6. Visit www.fullers.co.nz (opens in new window) for timetables and fares.

New Zealand Cruise Lines

New Zealand doesn’t get quite the same attention as neighbouring Australia when it comes to cruising, and the season is considerably shorter, as the country largely has one climate. That said, it remains on the itineraries of many visiting ships, most homeported in Australia.

P& O Australia caters to Australian cruisers, with Pacific Aria, Pacific Adventure and Pacific Dawn venturing across the Tasman Sea to visit New Zealand on a regular basis. Other Carnival Corp. brands also make regular calls to New Zealand during the summer months, including Princess, Holland America Line, Seabourn and Cunard.

Royal Caribbean, Dream Cruises and Celebrity Cruises also offer sailings to New Zealand each summer, with visiting ships often making calls on their repositioning cruises from other parts of the world ahead of the season’s start. Most New Zealand voyages through the summer depart from either Sydney or Auckland. Azamara, another Royal Caribbean Cruises Limited line, also visits New Zealand with in-depth itineraries of 14 nights or more.

Crystal, Oceania, Regent, Silversea and P& O Cruises have ships arriving between December and January for a short season on grand Pacific voyages or world cruises. Ponant also offer New Zealand itineraries.

How Do I Plan A New Zealand Cruise

If you have never been on a cruise before, you may have some questions about the logistics and how to plan your cruise .

First, you will want to get an idea of what your must-see attractions are. Most New Zealand cruises follow the popular itineraries of either departing from an Australian port, New Zealand-only, South Pacific Islands, and Repositioning cruises.

After you determine the itinerary you would like, then you need to focus on a specific cruise line for the best New Zealand cruise ever. Each cruise line offers a unique experience for every type of cruiser. Then, you can select a date with that perfect cruise line and itinerary to book and mark in your calendar!

I highly recommend booking a balcony or higher stateroom on your cruise ship as you will not regret waking up to the breathtaking New Zealand cruise landscape from your own private balcony. Also, make sure to avoid the loudest staterooms onboard to completely relax on your New Zealand cruise.

Once booked, you will receive access to more booking options like onboard packages, shore excursions, and stateroom upgrades . I highly suggest taking advantage of these pre-travel opportunities to have your vacation planned out before you leave on your New Zealand cruise!

How Is The Weather On New Zealand Cruises

While spring, summer, and early fall in New Zealand on a cruise can be fabulous, you should always come prepared.

This means to pack various layers to stay comfortable on your New Zealand cruise. The average temperatures in the southern region of the country are vastly different than the weather you will experience at the northern end. For the best chances of warm and pleasant weather , plan your New Zealand cruise during the months of January and February.

It also rains a lot in New Zealand , so make sure to bring your best rain jacket and umbrella. New Zealand has a high annual rainfall spread pretty evenly throughout the year. The weather on a New Zealand cruise can also change in an instant . Locals aren’t joking around when they say they sometimes experience all four seasons in one day!

When in the northern area of the country, you can expect subtropical weather during the summer, while the alpine areas of the South Island can reach as low as -10 Celsius. The average temperature gradually decreases as your New Zealand cruise travels south.

No Cruising In New Zealand Before October 2022 Association Reveals

Anyone looking to cruise to new zealand this season is out of luck there are no plans to resume cruising into new zealand until late next year at the earliest..

Cruising will not resume into New Zealand until the nation has achieved its 90 per cent vaccination rate, which is well above Australias target of 80 per cent before international borders re-open.

The New Zealand Cruise Association Chief Executive Officer Kevin OSullivan told Cruise Passenger that cruising will not return to New Zealand until 90 per cent of New Zealanders have rolled up their sleeves and had their vaccination.

90 per cent of cruises are cancelled. The cruise lines are still booking but the cruises are being cancelled, he said.

Mr OSullivan said that the New Zealand cruise industry had not yet spoken to the Health Minister Chris Hipkins, and that talks were unlikely until the governments desired vaccination rate was achieved a mirror of the treatment being metered our to the industry body in Australia.

Well have to discuss a phased re-entry. That could be smaller ships. Its hard to say. NZ will follow what Australia does, said Mr OSullivan. Fifty per cent of those cruising into New Zealand are Australian.

He said that before Delta there was talk of a cruise bubble. We looked at cruising New Zealand only, or Australia and New Zealand cruising.

At the moment we cant discuss cruising. It will depend on other countries.

The New Zealand economy has also taken a hit.

Tips To Help You Plan Your Cruise Down Under

By Heidi Sarna

Cruises between Australia and New Zealand are all the rage. Well, it’s all relative: In these parts there’s rarely more than one cruise ship in port at a time — thank god — but still, business is booming with both Celebrity and Royal Caribbean recently announcing they’ll position a ship down under next season sometime between late 2007 and March 2008. They join Holland America, Princess and Silversea who are already there this season.

There are few places in the world where the natural beauty is as stunning as New Zealand’s, though Alaska’s Inside Passage and the Norwegian fjords are usually mentioned in the same sentence as the fjords of New Zealand’s south island. The landscape varies from dense forests to rolling farmland. Brooding windswept clouds cast their shadows across hilly green carpets of sheep and cattle pastures. Seals laze on rocky peninsulas that jut into the frothy sea, vineyards stretch for miles, and the white capped peaks of the Southern Alps poke up through the horizon. It seems every road is a scenic drive. The towns are cute, the people are friendly, and who isn’t charmed by that streak of Kiwi wackiness — zorbing anyone?

What to Know Before You Go

1. Itineraries are typically about two weeks long and sail between Sydney and Auckland, somewhere between November and April .

8. Driving is on the left in both countries if you’re considering renting a car in port . Roads are generally well sign posted and in good condition.

Top Ports For New Zealand Cruises

No matter which cruise line and itinerary you ultimately decide on, you will likely visit a mix of these fabulous New Zealand ports.

Many cruises to New Zealand offer trips to these popular ports of call that are consistent with most itineraries. Like Caribbean cruise ports, these ports cater to the New Zealand cruise market . If you are looking for more than touristy attractions and activities, make sure to get out of the main port area and explore.

Youll explore a far less visited region of Antarctica including the Ross Sea and New Zealands sub-Antarctic Islands like the Auckland Islands and Campbell Island. On these routes youll spend way more time below the Polar Circle than an average Antarctica itinerary as well as be able to continue your travels in New Zealand. New Zealand Antarctica cruises embark from either Dunedin or Bluff, the countrys most southerly town.
