Romance and culture await on a Greek Island cruise

It’s no wonder the Greek Islands have always been a perennial favorite of travelers. Greece is a magical, romantic destination where you can wander alongside stunning coastlines, explore the ruins of ancient cultures, and dine on fresh Mediterranean cuisine all in one vacation.

On one of our luxury Greek Island cruises, explore far-flung beaches, drift out to sea on catamarans and kayaks, and duck into tiny tavernas where you can eat and drink like a local. From the sun-soaked stone buildings in Santorini to the white-sand beaches that beckon in Mykonos, a Greece cruise is the best way to experience the captivating Greek Islands.

Greek Island Cruise Highlights

Once-in-a-lifetime experiences.

There is no shortage of unforgettable experiences to be had in Greece. Its seascapes and cityscapes are wondrous, from the mighty ruins of the Acropolis to the buzzing, modern city center of Athens. Visit an olive farm in Crete, or embark on a tour of Mykonos Town’s organic wineries. Or, take an intimate, exclusive cooking lesson on how to make local favorites in Santorini’s main square, right in the middle of it all.

Ancient History

Greece is a world-renowned destination for history buffs. Stroll through the Acropolis and marvel at human achievement, or visit the Museum of Cycladic Art to study Aegean and Cypriot artifacts. Examine the 400-year-old remains of a town buried under volcanic ash outside of Santorini. Explore the historic forts of Corfu, or hop on a boat ride to Delos, said to be the birthplace of Apollo.

Natural Wonders

Discover Elafonisi Beach, a paradise of pink, powdery sand and shallow waters off the island of Crete. Take an unforgettable cruise through the impressive Corinth Canal on a shore excursion in Athens. Stand in awe at the base of Mount Olympus, Greece’s highest mountain and the fabled home of the Greek gods. In Zakynthos, don’t miss a visit to the awe-inspiring Shipwreck Beach, which often tops best-of lists.

Featured Ports

Santorini, Greece

Travelers flock to Santorini for its cobalt-roofed homes, friendly locals, and fine local wine. On this crescent-shaped island, soak up the sun at black-sand beaches like Perissa, or spend a day at the Santorini Caldera, one of the only places in the world to see submerged remnants of an erupted volcano. Sample Greek wines at family-owned wineries dotting the Aegean coast, and take the time to marvel at the incredible panoramas all around you.

Mykonos, Greece

Mykonos is the quintessential Mediterranean beach destination. Choose your favorite to spend the day on, or book a sailing excursion to go beach hopping. Take a day trip beyond Mykonos to the nearby island of Delos, an uninhabited archeological site said to be the birthplace of Greek gods. Experience an authentic side of the island with a home-cooking class, where you’ll sample and prepare delicious local specialties.

Athens, Greece

To visit the capital of Greece is to take a trip back in time, whether you’re exploring the narrow streets of the Plaka District or hiking the Acropolis for well-earned views of the Parthenon. After a day of exploration, pop into a taverna for Mediterranean meze and a cold beer.

Best Greece cruises: Top 5 ships sailing the Greek isles

Ashley Kosciolek

From ancient mythology to wine and olives, there's a lot to love about Greece . There's something magical about the contrast between the deep-blue waters of the Aegean Sea and the ancient ruins and white buildings found on the Greek islands.

The best Greece cruises are those that offer a well-rounded mix of islands and key Greece destinations: Athens for its ruins, Santorini for its blue-roofed churches, Mykonos for its shopping and nightlife, and Rhodes for its palace and charming cobblestone streets. You might even luck out and snag a visit to places like Turkey or Montenegro, too.

If you're not sure which ships to consider, here's a list of the best cruises to Greece for different kinds of travelers.

Best Greek isles cruises for families: Disney Dream

cruise for greece

Disney Cruise Line is ideal for families. If a Disney cruise to Greece with kids sounds appealing, Disney Dream is the ship that will take you there.

The vessel is not the line's newest, but it's also not the oldest, so you'll still find plenty to do on board. The 2,500-passenger ship's small size means it's easy to learn your way around. Even better, Disney Dream is typically more affordable than the line's newer vessels.

Your children likely won't be bored on the ship. Dream offers jaw-dropping entertainment and daily character appearances. Its magical kids clubs feature a replica of Andy's room from "Toy Story" and the Millennium Falcon's cockpit from "Star Wars." (Expect surprise visits from R2-D2 or a squad of stormtroopers.)

Also, Greece is wrapped in tons of ancient history to spark your family's imagination. For example, in Athens, your family might choose to take a guided tour of the Acropolis, followed by a "day in the life of an archeologist" experience, where you'll search for treasures in a faux archeological dig.

If the kids prefer something sportier, they might enjoy an excursion that takes visitors to the Panathenaic Stadium for a tour and a talk about the first Olympic games of the modern era.

Disney Dream sails eight-, nine- and 11-night voyages from $416 per person, per night, for a windowless inside cabin. Some itineraries sail round-trip from Rome, while others cruise one-way between Rome and Barcelona with calls on Athens, Mykonos and other ports in Greece.

Best adults-only Greece cruises for party animals: Resilient Lady

cruise for greece

If you enjoy a lively megaship party atmosphere but you don't want an environment that's overrun with kids, Virgin Voyages ' Resilient Lady will likely be the best Greece cruise option for you.

Although Virgin's Greece itineraries are pretty standard, its onboard experience is what sets it apart in the region.

The adults-only ship combines a casual vibe with a ramped-up nightlife. You'll find passengers dressed up like mermaids, crew dressed up like drag queens and performers that more accurately represent a cross-section of real life than those whom you'll find on most other lines' vessels.

Nighttime shows run the gamut from lounge singers and seemingly impromptu atrium dance parties to secret below-deck visits to the "crew bar" for a tipple. There's also Scarlet Night — a rave-like pool-deck dance party where everyone wears red.

If that's not wild enough for you, there's also an app that lets you order Champagne to wherever you are on board, free fitness classes that encourage you to dress up in your '80s best and even a tattoo parlor so you can make some bad decisions.

Resilient Lady sails seven-, 10- and 14-night cruises, starting at $148 per person, per night, for an inside cabin. The voyages feature stops in Croatia, Turkey and Montenegro, in addition to Greece (Santorini, Rhodes and overnight in Mykonos from Athens), depending on the specific itinerary you choose.

Best budget-friendly Greece cruises: Rhapsody of the Seas

cruise for greece

Want to check out Greece but have limited funds? Although you'll have to factor in potentially expensive flights to Israel to board, a voyage on Royal Caribbean 's Rhapsody of the Seas could be right up your alley.

The ship is one of Royal Caribbean's older ships — it debuted in 1997 — but that doesn't mean you won't find fun onboard activities such as trivia, pool games, nightly theater performances, game shows, dancing and live music.

The best part if you're on a budget is the price. You can snag sailings of five or seven nights, round-trip from Haifa, from just $65 per person, per night, for an inside cabin. Voyages include calls to ports in Rhodes, Athens, Santorini and Mykonos, as well as Cyprus.

Best small-ship luxury Greece cruises: Windstar's Wind Star

cruise for greece

Windstar Cruises ' namesake, Wind Star, is a 148-passenger masted sailing yacht that offers a special Greek islands experience.

The ship is great for sailing aficionados. Because of its small size, the ship can visit smaller ports that larger vessels can't access. (Think Patmos, known to theology buffs as the place where the book of Revelation was written; Monemvasia, a town carved into rock; and Nafplion, modern Greece's original capital and now the site of museums, churches and castles.)

Also, Wind Star is an upscale ship, which means you'll find elevated dining and service on board. All cabins offer at least one window. When you purchase an all-inclusive fare, Wi-Fi, gratuities and alcohol are rolled into the price.

The vessel sails weeklong Greece cruises round-trip from Athens and calls on Mykonos, Santorini, Patmos, Monemvasia and Nafplion in Greece, as well as Kusadasi in Turkey. Rates start from $500 per person, per night, for an outside cabin.

Best locally based Greek isles cruises: Celestyal Journey

cruise for greece

Celestyal Cruises is a line you don't hear about too often, but it's based in Greece, which means it has a unique perspective on Greek island sailings.

If you're looking for a cruise vacation that's full of local Greek flare, check out the brand's Celestyal Journey. Set to debut for the line in September 2023, the ship isn't new, but following an extensive refurbishment, it will become the youngest member of the line's fleet.

Holding about 1,200 passengers, Celestyal Journey is small enough that you'll still receive a personalized experience but large enough to offer a multitude of onboard amenities. Enjoy yourself at the spa and fitness center, eight bars, seven restaurants, a chef's table experience and two pools. The ship offers 630 cabins, including 149 balcony cabins, 120 junior suites and 28 full-fledged suite accommodations.

Itineraries offered by Celestyal Journey range from four to 28 nights, departing from either Athens or Thessaloniki. Most voyages include calls on well-known Greek ports like Santorini, Rhodes and Mykonos, while longer sailings also venture to places in Turkey and Montenegro. Pricing is not yet available.

Bottom line

The best cruises to Greece combine a mix of fascinating destinations with a ship that fits your budget and travel style. If you're still unsure which cruise to choose, check with a knowledgeable cruise travel agent who can help you sort through the options.

Greek Isle Beauty

Explore greek isle ports.

Piraeus (Athens), Greece

Step back in time on your cruise to Greece. Visit the Parthenon, the Temple of Athena Nike, and other ancient ruins. Follow your tour with an open-air dinner in the Plaka neighborhood.

Crete (Souda), Greece

On the northwest coast of the island of Crete, Souda beckons with a romantic Venetian harbor, Old Town’s tangle of streets, and a 500-year-old lighthouse.

Katakolon (Olympia), Greece

The region reveals what it means to be Greek: traditions that go back thousands of years, simple but delicious and healthy cuisine, towering mountains, and crystal blue seas.

Mykonos, Greece

Mykonos is a top choice among the glamourous. Chic tavernas with open terraces line the sea and after the sun dips down, the island sizzles with youthful energy.

Kerkira (Corfu), Greece

Come ashore to Corfu on your Greek Islands cruise, a muse for some of history’s most notable writers. Be inspired with a swim in its azure waters or wander verdant, cypress-dotted hills.

Rhodes, Greece

Even without its immense Helios statue, Rhodes remains one of the most-visited Greek islands with its white-sand beaches, glittering coves and fascinating ruins.

Thira (Santorini), Greece

Santorini has a dizzying array of archeological treasures, sun-bleached villages and world-renowned wines. To top it all, it’s home to one of the most beautiful volcanic calderas in the world.

Gythion (Sparta), Greece

Once the port of ancient Sparta, this lovely fishing town draws its name from gi theon, which means “land of the gods” in Greek. It’s the entryway to the rugged, mountainous realm of the Spartans—the fiercely independent people who rejected foreign rule time and time again.

Kavala (Neapolis), Greece

Northern Greece is often overlooked as a Greek Isle cruise destination, and many will not even have heard of the Macedonian port of Kavála. But the city, and the region it opens into, are both picturesque and culturally important, with a history that encompasses classical times as well as the more modern era.

Mytilene, Nisos Lesbos

Lesbos, Greece is well known for olives and ouzo production, and visitors can see evidence of both everywhere. The island's charms extend beyond those pleasures, though: It’s a beautiful place of open plains, sweeping hills, and sandy beaches with views of Turkey across the water.

Pylos, Greece

Pine-covered hills wrap around the lovely town of Pylos (often referred to as Navarino, its Italian name), in the Messenia region of Greece's Peloponnese. Cobblestoned streets lead down to the harbor, where outdoor cafés overlook the bay. This pleasant scene, however, belies a turbulent history.

Restaurant Tables Near Ocean in Santorini, Greece

Santorini only has villages, not towns, and these diverse areas provide a first-hand glimpse into Greek life. Because the whole island is less than 28 square miles, it's not difficult to take in most of the sights from the looming cliffs and still have time for shopping, eating and some down time on the Aegean Sea.

Greece Marine Life and Scuba Diver

Greece's underwater worlds complete with seahorses, eels and plenty of fish are almost too perfect not to grab your scuba gear and take the plunge. Santorini has an excellent dive center that will get you into the water fast with instructors who will guide you through the warm Mediterranean waters.

Greece Nea Kameni Volcano

Another great thing to do while in Greece are the daily tours of the volcano Nea Kameni, which is located on an uninhabited island close to Santorini: begin with a short boat ride, followed by a climb up to the volcanic craters that takes just over an hour. The tour then takes in hot springs and mud baths, where you can recharge your batteries.

Greek Isles Archaeological Site

Go on an archaeological exploration of the ancient world's most renowned sites, from Bronze Age excavations to temples dedicated to the Greek gods with your cruise to Greece and Greek Isles.

Greek Isles Ancient Ruins

The largest of the Greek islands, Crete is both a beach paradise and home to some of the country's premier archaeological finds and attractions. Visit Greece and tour the Palace at Knossos, built by the Minoans more than 4,000 years ago, before exploring the Archaeological Museum, where the treasures of Knossos – including sculptures, jewellery and mosaics – are exhibited.

Akrotiri Historical Site Santorini Greece

Excavations of Akrotiri on Santorini Island date back to the Manoan Bronze Age, where the settlement was preserved in ash following a volcanic eruption in 1627 BC. The site is still being excavated today, and you can witness history first-hand by exploring the vast settlement and the enormous ongoing archaeological dig.

Ancient Greece Ruins Delos Apollo and Artemis

Delos is one of the most important archaeological sites in the world, and it's also the mythological birthplace of the sun god, Apollo, and his twin, Artemis, goddess of the moon and the hunt. You can spend hours exploring the ruins and learning about Greek history on the most-sacred place of worship in Ancient Greece. Even the nearby old port has its own charm, with an amphitheatre, sanctuary and various dwellings waiting to be explored.

Beach Cave in Greece

This is not your average summer holiday in Europe – it’s an all-out culture trip you’ll never forget. Offering longer stays in port, Odyssey of the Seas℠ takes you deeper into the culture, history and natural beauty of some of Europe’s most incredible destinations. Cruise to Greece and explore the most beautiful isles in the Aegean or take your adventure further on a longer wander with extended stays in Turkey and Israel.

Sunset in Santorini, Greece

There’s nothing like spending a summer in Greece, and an adventure on Odyssey of the Seas℠ , is the perfect way to experience it. Scope picture-perfect sunsets in Santorini. Tour a local vineyard in Crete. And spend a day soaking up the sun on a golden-sand beach in Mykonos . You’re in for adventure no matter how you choose to isle away the time.

Jerusalem, Sunset Dome of the Rock Mosque

If you’re looking for a bucket-list trip, this is it. Wander along the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem’s Old City. Take a dip in the Dead Sea. And soak up the sights, sounds and scents of a traditional Turkish market in Ephesus . Sailing into the Holy Land, every day is filled with new discoveries.

Olive orchards often offer tours and tastings, so grab the chance to try some freshly pressed oil.

Santorini is known for one-day yacht tours that give you a unique view of the island and its neighbours.

Ftelia Beach, on the northern side of Mykonos, is the place for watersports and windsurfing, as well as those sunsets everyone dreams about.

The Greek islands are known for famous foods like feta cheese, but the location is also home to a slew of other delicacies. Olive oil plays a big part in the local cuisine, as does local produce, such as tomatoes and other Mediterranean vegetables. Feast on feta me meli, baked feta wrapped in filo or choriatiki: greek salad with tons of vegetables. While meat such as lamb, pork and veal are found everywhere, especially in gyros or keftethes (meatballs), fish and seafood are the undisputed stars, due to proximity to the sea.

Greek Feta Cheese and Kalamata Olives

Kefalonia is home to the legendary tiropita cheese puff, which is basically cheese baked in cheese, although you'll also find puffs filled with vegetables, particularly spinach, and even sometimes meat. You can also find local cheeses like feta, manuri or kefalotiri everywhere.

Greek Kreatopita Meat Pie

Meat pies filled with lamb, veal or sometimes pork are called kreatopita, and they are cooked with wine and tomatoes, garlic, cinnamon and nutmeg, creating a medley of flavours. There's also a variety called pastitsio that combines pasta and meat.

Greek Fresh Seafood Platter

Your choices are endless when it comes to fresh seafood prepared according to local tradition. Try a simple shrimp and pasta dish, or go wild with octapodi kokkinisto, octopus in tomato sauce, during your Greece cruise.

The beautiful Greece and Greek Isles cruise ports, from the in-progress archaeological digs at Delos to the Old Towns of Crete and Rhodes, the Greek Islands are brimming with history. And while it's wonderful to explore the past, the beaches of Mykonos and the architecture of Santorini and Athens are just a few of the many pleasures that await you.

4 things you need to know when planning a cruise to the Greek Islands

Few places are as photographed and fantasized about as the Greek Islands.

You can visit Santorini’s whitewashed houses and their blue domes perched high atop the steep cliffs, witness the incredible history of the Acropolis of Athens , or stroll around the cobblestone alleyways of romantic Mykonos .

That said, traveling the Greek Islands can be daunting: There are flights to secure, hotels to book, boat reservations to make—and that doesn’t even begin to count your meals, entertainment and the like. Cruising the islands can take much of that guesswork out of the equation, and our local Expedia Cruises™ travel agents will ensure you maximize your time and money, so you can focus on enjoying the experience.

Here are a few of the most asked questions answered about planning your cruise to the Greek Islands:

1. What is the best time to go on a Greek Islands cruise?

The cruise season to the Greek Islands usually runs from late April to October. Some guests prefer to start their cruise early in the season to avoid the higher temperatures of July and August. A regular summer day can easily hit up to 100 degrees Fahrenheit.

Sailing in October is less busy, and you can enjoy pleasant weather ideal for walking, hiking, and sightseeing. The water will not be as warm for swimming, but the Greek beaches and the ancient sites won’t be as packed.

2. What are the departure ports for a Greek Island cruise?

View of Mikrolimano harbour and yacht marina at Piraeus, Athens, Greece

Piraeus, Athens

Piraeus, located about 7.5 miles southwest of Athens, is one of the most visited cruise ports in the Mediterranean Sea. It’s no surprise many cruise lines have chosen Piraeus as their departure port thanks to its proximity to Athens and the numerous wonders there to explore. Do keep in mind that even though Piraeus is close to Athens, travel times into the city can be about one hour, depending on traffic.

Limassol, Cyprus

Limassol is the largest town in Cyprus, an island nation in the eastern Mediterranean Sea. Cruise ships dock at Limassol New Port, located about three miles from downtown. Downtown Limassol might not feature the famous sites of Athens, but the downtown area has a more carefree holiday air and great shops for browsing.

Civitavecchia, Italy

Civitavecchia, the closest cruise port to Rome, is the starting point for a variety of itineraries exploring the Mediterranean and the Greek Islands. Thanks to its proximity to Rome, it’s a great stop for two or three days before or after your cruise to explore the city. Here, you can wander through one of the many museums, marvel at masterpieces by the likes of Da Vinci and Michelangelo, learn about the history of the Roman Catholic Church in Vatican City, and take a step back in time at the ruins of the Colosseum and Roman Forum.

3. Where does a Greek Islands cruise take you?

View of hilltop Lindos, Acropolis in Rhodes, Greece

Mykonos, Greece

No matter how many photos or videos you watch about Mykonos, nothing will prepare you for the experience in person. Walking in narrow alleyways between white-washed houses set against a striking blue sea transports you to a magical place. Mykonos, known as the island of the winds, is famous for its iconic windmills, colorful doorways, crystal clear waters, traditional tavernas, and several local and high-end shops.

There’s Little Venice, a seafront neighborhood packed with lively bars, restaurants and clubs. Also check out Paradise Beach, Super Paradise, and Paraga for one of the best beach parties on the island.

Many cruise lines will stop at Mykonos for 11 to 12 hours, giving you plenty of time to experience all the city has to offer.

Santorini, Greece

Santorini is a staple of many Eastern European and Greek Island cruise itineraries. Taking a shore excursion here is highly recommended but requires a little more pre-planning than it would seem.

There are two major towns of Santorini. The first, Thira, is the most popular. A cable car ride (or famous donkey ride) takes visitors up the steep hillside from the port to the town. The second town is Oia, pronounced ee-yah. This small village is the site of most of those iconic cliffside Santorini shots. Thira is beautiful and has plenty of interesting shopping and restaurants, but Oia is considered the more scenic of the two, thanks to its dramatic cliffside vistas.

Rhodes, Greece

A cruise to the Greek Islands cannot be complete without a visit to Rhodes. This island is not only the largest of the Dodecanese Islands, but it also offers visitors a great balance between history, stunning architecture, delicious food, and a laid-back holiday atmosphere.

History is everywhere you look on this island. There are the ancient remains of the Acropolis of Lindos, a citadel used by almost everyone who claimed the island, from the Greeks through the Ottomans. It also features the towering columns of the Temple of Athena Lindia. Another stop is the UNESCO World Heritage City of Old Town. This neighborhood will charm you with its narrow streets, towering walls, classic Greek tavernas, and local shops.

Corfu, Greece

One of the best things about taking a Greek Islands cruise is that each port will surprise you in a different way, and Corfu is no exception. Corfu is an island located in the mouth of the Adriatic Sea and it’s the perfect place to enjoy historical sites, wonderful beaches with dramatic blue waters, and hillside villages.

While the town itself is not far from the port, on a sunny day, you may want a taxi to the slightly less walkable attractions located in the Old Town: Saint Spyridon Church, the Palace of Saint Michael and Saint George, the Museum of Asian Art, the Banknote Museum, the St. George Church, and the Old Fort.

Athens (Piraeus), Greece

While Piraeus is a popular departure port for many Greek Islands cruises, it can also be a port of call worth visiting during your cruise. The port of Piraeus is the closest one to the city of Athens, where you will find many must-see landmarks of the Greek capital, such as the famous Acropolis, the Temple of Olympian Zeus, the Parthenon, and the Acropolis Museum.

Many cruise ships dock in this port for 10 – 12 hours, giving you enough time for a taste of the best parts of the city. Immerse yourself in rich Greek history, taste the fresh flavors of local cuisine, or explore the narrow streets of Plaka, situated beneath the world-famous Acropolis.

4. What are my cruise line options for the Greek Islands?

Most of the popular cruise lines offer Greek Islands cruises, and you’ll find seven to eleven-night sailings from Celebrity Cruises , Norwegian Cruise Line , Royal Caribbean , Princess Cruises , and MSC Cruises .

It is also common to find sailings that combine a Mediterranean itinerary with a Greek Islands itinerary. These types of sailings are usually longer in duration, and very well worth it for anyone with the time to explore.

For a more upscale experience, join the Celebrity Apex and embark on a seven-night Greek Islands cruise out of Piraeus. If you prefer a longer cruise, Norwegian Getaway will take you on an unforgettable 10-night journey across the Mediterranean Sea and throughout the Greek Islands.

Cruise lines continue to announce new sailings and destinations that you can book now, setting sail as soon as this June. Stay up to date with our latest new sailings announcements .

*Please note, conditions to board vary per cruise line and per country of residence. All travel is subject to frequently changing governmental restrictions—please check government advisories before scheduling trips.

cruise for greece

Cruise Expert

Friday February 17 2023, 15:44pm

Dreamy archaeological sites steeped in mythology, idyllic beaches and an authentic welcome are just three reasons to explore Greece by sea. But there are plenty more. Fresh seafood in a waterfront taverna and sundowners in a cool clifftop bar on Santorini. Wandering around the sugar-cube villages of the Cyclades, or marvelling at medieval architecture in Rhodes. A Greek islands cruise is the perfect way to experience this magical country, whether you’re island-hopping in the Aegean or delving deep into history as you sail around the rocky fingers of the Peloponnese, the scent of wild herbs in the air. There’s no end of choice, from a luxury cruise with free-flowing champagne to the simpler pleasures of a small ship, where the destination itself is the star.

Hydra is one of the best places to visit in Greece on a cruise

3. Variety Cruises

Family-owned and based in Athens, Variety Cruises offers a wide choice of small ship cruises with a focus on off-the-beaten-track itineraries. So while a typical week might include Mykonos and Santorini, you’ll also visit the ancient fortified town of Monemvasia, arty Hydra and sleepy Kythira, its port guarded by a medieval castle. Ports in the Cyclades include Antiparos, Folegandros and Syros, while other itineraries circle the long fingers of the Peloponnese, visiting classical sights like Delphi, Epidaurus and the Corinth Canal. Oceania Cruises is a good choice for Greek island cruises

7. Oceania Cruises

Oceania’s elegant, mid-sized ships roam all over the Mediterranean in summer. You’ll find lots of options to explore Greece, from one-week hops between Athens and Rome to an 18-day odyssey from Jerusalem to Istanbul. All the big-hitting destinations are featured, as well as smaller spots where you may be the only ship in port, including the quaint old Venetian town of Chania; Gythion, on the remote Mani peninsula of the Peloponnese; and stately Syros, capital of the Cyclades. On board, dining is the line’s big selling point, with all speciality restaurants included in the price. The culinary theme is extended ashore with excursions that include visiting local markets for ingredients and learning to prepare them in an on-board cookery class and a foraging tour on Cephalonia.

Royal Caribbean is a good choice for families looking for a Greek cruise

8. Royal Caribbean

Families love Royal Caribbean’s big, bright vessels — they often choose the trip as much for the ship as the destination. Odyssey of the Seas, one of the line’s newest ships, is among the Royal Caribbean vessels that visit the Greek islands, and sails from Rome. Days between ports such as Santorini, Mykonos and Chania are filled with distractions such as a surf simulator, VR games, a skydiving simulator, dodgems and a vast pool deck complete with hammocks and oversized Jacuzzis. As well as week-long itineraries, there are shorter four-night sailings.

Norwegian Jade in Santorini, Greece

9. Norwegian Cruise Line

You’ve got plenty of choice if you want to explore Greece on one of Norwegian’s colourful, activity-filled ships, several of which spend summer in the Mediterranean. Cruises depart from Athens, Rome, Venice and Barcelona, offering from seven to ten-night holidays, visiting popular ports including Santorini, Athens, Mykonos and Corfu, as well as other destinations. Some voyages head to Istanbul, while others call at Malta. One of the standout features of Norwegian is its superb entertainment, which includes full-production Broadway shows, sizzling dance performance  Burn The Floor  and live music in a replica of the Cavern Club. Shore excursions, including riding, kayaking and mountain biking, are among the different ways to explore destinations.

Skopelos is one of the best places to visit as part of a Greek cruise

10. Star Clippers

Sailing doesn’t come any more romantic than a voyage on one of Star Clippers’ stirring tall ships, exploring sun-drenched Greek islands under 36,000 sq ft of billowing sail. Star Flyer spends the summer in the Greek islands, carried by the wind to the Sporades. Stops include the pretty  Mamma Mia!  location of Skopelos, as well as the Cyclades and, on voyages from Athens to Istanbul, the Dodecanese. Life on board is as relaxed as it comes; you can bask in the hammock-like bowsprit nets and climb the mast to the crow’s nest for striking views down over the deck. It’s guaranteed you’ll always be on the most head-turning vessel in port.

Syros is one of the best places to visit during a Greek cruise

11. Windstar Cruises

Windstar’s small, luxurious ships offer some wonderfully creative itineraries around the Greek islands, with time to lose yourself among the ancient ruins of the Acropolis one day and kick back on soft sand beaches in the Cyclades the next. Visit medieval Monemvasia, squeeze through the narrow chasm of the Corinth Canal, or spend a day in Ermoupoli on Syros, where former sea captains’ mansions in ochre and terracotta cling to the hillside. There are overland tour options, too, combining Delphi’s exquisite Temple of Apollo and the mountain monasteries of Meteora with a cruise. Windstar has several ships in the Greek islands in summer and your home at sea could be the five-masted sailing ship Wind Surf, or the all-suite megayacht Star Pride.

SeaDream Yacht Club offers some of the best Greek Cruises

12. SeaDream Yacht Club

SeaDream’s petite, 112-passenger ships are as close as you’ll get to a private yacht, with stupendously good food, all-inclusive drinks and personal, intuitive service. Embrace the yachtie lifestyle, whether it’s plunging off the back of the ship into the sparkling blue Aegean sea or lounging by the pool while a waiter tops up your champagne. Greece itineraries vary from seven to 11 nights — some round-trip from Athens, others sail from Athens to Istanbul or Venice. Some of the most tempting ports of call include Milos; Skopelos; Hydra; the fortress town of Monemvasia; Gythio; and on Cephalonia, dreamy Fiskardo — where pastel-coloured houses are backed by pine-scented hills.

Amorgos is one of the best places to visit as part of a Greek cruise

13. Azamara Club Cruises

Cultural immersion is the goal of Azamara, which operates a fleet of four comfortable, mid-sized ships, several of which cruise the Greek islands in summer. You’ll often be the last ship in port, staying in Santorini long after the sun has set in a blaze of scarlet, or docked in Rhodes as the medieval streets come alive in the cool of the evening. As well as the big-hitting ports, there are plenty of smaller surprises, including pretty Amorgos, Thessaloniki, Venetian Chania and Argostoli on Cephalonia, Captain Corelli country. Shore excursions include pottery and cookery classes, plus culinary walks through towns and villages stopping to taste local delicacies along the way. Life on board is informal — but pack something white for the weekly Bright Night deck party, an event for which Azamara is justifiably renowned.

Sea Cloud II cruise ship - the Sea Cloud line cruises the Greek islands

14. Sea Cloud

This German-owned line’s graceful windjammers, Sea Cloud and Sea Cloud II, explore the Greek islands all summer, and their itineraries mix mainstream ports with off-the-beaten-track spots such as Spetses, Nafplio, Syros and the walled city of Kavala, founded in the seventh century BC. The ships evoke a nostalgic era of glamour with their gleaming wood and polished brass. The original Sea Cloud was built in 1931 and even has a decorative marble fireplace in its master suite. While days are relaxed, with swimming off the ship’s water sports platform, evenings on board tend to dial things up a notch. A lot of the passengers are Germans who enjoy the sense of occasion and like to dress up.

Marella cruises stops at Corfu, Santorini and Mykonos

15. Marella Cruises

Marella’s cheery, all-inclusive cruises are designed with a British audience in mind; expect stand-up, tribute bands and stacks of bacon at breakfast. Voyages range from adult-only cruises on the swish Marella Explorer 2, to family-friendly on Marella Discovery. Mediterranean cruises include the Greek islands and depart from Dubrovnik or  Corfu , both served by Tui charter flights from a wide range of regional UK airports. Ports include Santorini, Mykonos, Heraklion, Chania and Katalolon. Cruise-and-stay options can be bolted on, so you can plump for a week in Corfu bookended by a seven-night cruise. Marella is the only cruise line to have a partnership with Champneys, so make time on board for the spa.

16. Crystal

Luxe-lovers will welcome the return of the Crystal name. In 2022 the A&K Travel Group acquired the Crystal brand and relaunched its pair of ocean ships, Crystal Symphony and Crystal Serenity. The former will spend the summer of 2023 on itineraries taking in big-name Greek islands including Mykonos, Rhodes, Crete and Patmos. To usher in a new era, the ship has undergone an extensive facelift which has seen cabins enlarged and passenger numbers reduced from 848 to 606. However, some things stay the same, including Crystal’s standout service which includes butler service to every suite.

Emerald Cruises runs some of the best Greek cruises

When it launched in 2022 the 100-passenger Emerald Azzurra marked river line Emerald Cruises’ move into the world of ocean cruising. Now joined by sister ship Sakara, the sleek vessels provide a swish superyacht experience without the price tag of more expensive lines. Both ships sail in the Greek islands and while there’s plenty of time for lazing and sunbathing, Emerald will appeal to anyone keen to keep active on holiday with excursions such as guided hikes, kayaking and diving. Gentler pursuits include a mosaic-making workshop on Mykonos and a glimpse into monastic life on Patmos. Itineraries also visit the lesser-known Amorgos, the most easterly isle in the Cyclades.

When is the best time to cruise the Greek islands?

It depends on what you’re looking for. Attractions will be quieter in spring and autumn during the shoulder months, but you’ll get the best weather (both for exploring ports and relaxing with a cocktail on deck) in July and August.

How much does it cost to cruise the Greek islands?

Again, it depends. The duration and cruise line — among other factors — will have a big influence on the price. If you’re looking to save money, consider choosing a shorter cruise and adding time at the end — you can base yourself on an island and catch a Blue Star ferry to see others.

Mediterranean Cruise Ports of Call

Discover some of the world-renowned destinations that await you on a Mediterranean cruise with Princess.

Rooted in Greek mythology, Athens is alive with stories from civilizations of the past. On a cruise to Europe departing from Athens, arrive early to tour the remains of ancient lores — like the Temple of Olympian Zeus and Acropolis — dine at the city’s lively tavernas and admire iconic sculptures bathed in natural light within the Acropolis Museum.

Until it was popularized by the 1992 Olympics, Barcelona was a hidden gem amidst Europe’s diverse landscapes. Now it’s widely recognized for its architectural masterpieces and spirited customs. On European cruises from Barcelona, leave enough time before you depart to visit Park Güell — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — and feel inspired by the colors and unique artistry that lies in the park and throughout the entire city.

As one of the greenest islands in Greece, Corfu is an emerald treasure amidst the colorful Mediterranean landscape. From Paleokastritsa, hike to the mountaintop for unparalleled views of the Ionian Sea. Or get a taste of Corfu when you team up with a famous chef, and handpick local produce that they’ll use to prepare your lunch. Experience it all on a Greek cruise with Princess.

On a Mediterranean cruise to Livorno, travel to Florence or Pisa where artifacts abound. Capture snapshots of the Leaning Tower of Pisa, stop by Michelangelo’s David statue at the Accademia and walk up to the “Gates of Paradise” at the Baptistery. Or explore the countryside and meander through the region’s rolling hills that bear vineyards and green olive groves.

Nestled within Boka Bay lies a medieval gem. Kotor is enrobed in ancient houses, palaces and churches that speak to its 12th-century origins. On a Greek cruise, dine on Montenegrin cuisine in the home of a local chef, appreciate 14th-century Venetian art at St. Tryphon’s Cathedral and taste regional wines along the riviera. Or see another side of the city when you kayak through the tunnels of Lipa Cave.

As the largest port in the Mediterranean, Marseille is the gateway to opportunity. On a Mediterranean cruise, spend the day in Arles, and explore the landscapes that inspired much of Van Gogh’s artwork. Stroll through the MuSaMa, a soap museum, and create your own blend alongside a master soap maker. Or roam the city’s most popular landmark, Notre-Dame de la Garden, a Catholic basilica that overlooks the city.

Famous for its beaches and spirited lifestyle, Mykonos is the heartbeat of Greece. Embark on a jeep safari past the city’s windmills, lighthouses and lakes. Walk past temples and marble-lined sanctuaries in Delos, the birthplace of famous Greek gods. Or soak up a day of relaxation on the beach with the city’s Cycladic architecture as your backdrop — all on a Greek cruise with Princess.

Italy’s capital city is something of a dream. Grand chapels and stone angels line the roads, whispering secrets of Rome’s past. On a cruise to Europe from Rome, arrive early to toss a coin into Trevi Fountain. Legend has it, you’ll be guaranteed return to The Eternal City. Then walk in the footsteps of Emperors at the Colosseum, and receive a blessing from the Pope at St. Peter’s Square.

Santorini is the epitome of Greece. Wander into the welcoming cafes in Oia, a village teeming with whitewashed buildings and blue-domed roofs. Continue to some of the world’s oldest vineyards and taste the bouquet of wines produced on the island, making sure to visit the black-sand beach of Kamari before heading back to your Mediterranean cruise ship.

Why Cruise the Mediterranean

In lands where the culture is as flavorful as the cuisine, the splendor of the Mediterranean speaks for itself.

World-Class Dining

Captivating cuisine

With mouthwatering entrees and confections, the Mediterranean invites you to embark on a gourmet tour through iconic cities. Reawaken your taste buds with Italian classics like pastas, pizzas and gelato. Or fill your plate with gyros, keftethes and baklava on a Greek cruise. From breakfast to dinner and every delectable dessert in between, the best is before you with Princess.

Bold reds and crisp whites

The countryside of Italy and Greece are home to some of the most flavorful wines around the globe. With sun and warm temperatures year-round, vineyards are flourishing with grapes by the harvest season. Sip on Italy’s red wines, or sample Greece’s white blends. From sweet Lambruscos to earthy Bordeauxs, fill up your glass on a Mediterranean cruise with Princess.

Ancient Ruins

Where history comes to life

From towers and temples to cities and shorelines, the Mediterranean is sprinkled with remains of civilizations past. Step back in time on a tour through ancient ruins on a Mediterranean cruise with Princess. Imagine life as a gladiator at the Colosseum, explore Greek mythology at the Parthenon and discover the archeological excavations of Pompeii — a lost city and UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Art Galleries & Museums

Artistic ingenuity abounds

From the treasures on land to the jewels within museums, the Mediterranean is a true work of art. On an Italian cruise, see portraits from the Renaissance period at the Uffizi Museum in Florence, and admire Michelangelo’s masterpieces at the Vatican Museum in Rome. Or walk in the footsteps of celebrated artists that called these regions home — like Picasso and Dali — and allow their work to spark your creativity.

Sun-Kissed Beaches

A vision of natural beauty

Visions of sparkling coasts and crystalline waters welcome you to the Mediterranean. Dip your toes on the black-sand coast of Santorini on a Greek cruise. Head to Salerno to spend the day in Positano relaxing on the white beaches and admiring the pastel houses that decorate the cliffs around you. Or travel to Mykonos with your loved ones and daydream on the city’s long stretch of golden sand and stroll in the sunshine.

Mediterranean excursions

Our award-winning Mediterranean cruise shore excursions bring you to iconic beaches, landmarks and ancient artifacts. See the yacht-lined shores of Kotor while riding on a tuk tuk, an electric rickshaw. Savor the flavors of “Koum Kouat” liqueur, created from Corfu’s exclusive citrus plant. 5 Best Cruises to Greece

  • By Victor Tan and Steve Spears
  • Updated: October 10, 2019

Is the economic turmoil in Greece deterring you from planning that dream cruise to the Greek islands? Don’t let it. Prices in port are likely to be more tourist-friendly, now, and there are plenty of fantastic ships to make cruises to Greece memorable.

Visit a variety of some of the world’s oldest and most awe-inspiring wonders, as you stand side by side with 34-foot columns at the Parthenon, for example. Before embarking on your journey from Rome, visit landmarks like the Colosseum or St. Peter’s Basilica.

From Greek cruises focusing solely on the country and its islands to ventures beginning in another significant western influence, Italy, our list of the five best cruises to Greece is sure to have an itinerary fit for you and your party.

Treasures of the Greek Isles – Windstar Cruises

Cruise to the Greek Isles on this seven-day cruise aboard Wind Star , and experience a Mediterranean adventure to remember on one of the best Greek-island cruises. Starting and ending in Athens, this Windstar cruise visits six other ports throughout Greece and includes a stop in Kuşadası, Turkey.

Along the way, guests will have the opportunity to visit nine UNESCO World Heritage Sites (landmarks like the Acropolis, for example). Stand atop Palamidi, a fortress in Nafplio, after climbing 999 rock steps. In Monemvasia, walk with a loved one through the streets, as classic, romantic castles rise above from seemingly every angle.

Windstar Cruises also have 40 different shore excursions available across all stops. Ranging anywhere from four to eight hours and $79 to $1,800, these activities include eating, drinking, boating, sightseeing and more.

All guests are treated to an “Evening in Ephesus,” too. The Library of Celsus in Selçuk, Turkey, is exclusively accommodates Wind Star ‘s passengers, as guests partake in a five-course meal in the courtyard outside the ancient Roman library that once housed over 12,000 scrolls more than 2,000 years ago.

Italy & Best of Greek Islands – Celebrity Cruises

Cruise Greece while enjoying 10 nights aboard Celebrity Edge, as travelers are offered the chance to explore arguably the two most influential cultures in the West. This cruise departs from Rome and stops at seven other ports (five in Greece, two in Italy) with two days at sea mixed in before returning to its origin.

Passengers have access to 124 excursions across the itinerary’s eight destinations. The most varied excursions are in Rome, Athens and Naples, with 20 opportunities available at each. Many of these excursions center around sightseeing and exploring landmarks, but guests can also go on a safari adventure, traveling up Parnitha Mountain while admiring Greek wildlife.

Aboard this 2,918-passenger Celebrity Cruises ship, there are three restaurants, three bars, a theater, a kids club, an adults club, a shopping center, a fitness center, a rooftop garden lounge and a jogging deck that circles the resort deck.

Mediterannean with Greek Isles Cruise from Civitavecchia – Disney Cruise Lines

Beginning and ending in Rome, this nine-night cruise aboard Disney Magic will take its passengers to four ports in Greece and two other ports in Italy, with two days at sea mixed in.

Rome wasn’t built in a day, and it’s impossible to explore it all in a day, too. Before embarking on your journey to Greece, though, check out St. Peter’s Basilica to stand in awe at one of the world’s most famous Catholic churches and the Vatican Museums for artwork (e.g., paintings, sculptures) collected by the papacy.

Day 4 is when Disney Magic will arrive in Greece, beginning in the city of Heraklion on the island of Crete. Here, passengers can visit what is considered to be Europe’s oldest city: Knossos. Athens, Mykonos and Santorini, in that order, are next on the itinerary. Stop by the Parthenon, bask in the wonder of five-century-old Venetian windmills, and sink your toes into the red sands of Kokkini Paralia Beach.

For adults worried about children disrupting their Disney cruise, there are adults-only venues and amenities to ease their concerns. From nightclubs and lounges to world-class spas and adults-only pools and dining experiences, Disney Cruise Lines provide everything adult passengers can expect from other cruises but with Disney quality.

Disney cruises also take their passengers to Disney Castaway Cay, the line’s private island, where adults-only Serenity Bay allows guests to sunbathe and nosh on a barbecue lunch.

Greek Odyssey – Holland America Line

From Rome to Venice with six stops at ports in Greece, this 12-day cruise also takes its passengers to Naples, Turkey and Montenegro, showcasing some of the world’s most influential Western cultures.

Travel aboard the Zuiderdam with 1,900 other passengers on this 936-foot-long ship and on one of the best cruises in Greece. Wander through its corridors, and admire its wondrous art and antique collection. Find ultimate relaxation in the Greenhouse Spa & Salon, test your culinary skills in a hands-on workshop from America’s Test Kitchen, and learn about the world with BBC Earth Experiences presentations and activities.

Try to earn some of your money back by visiting the casino and playing blackjack, poker, or have a go at slot machines on this Holland America Line cruise. Live music is also an entertainment option, as Lincoln Center Stage performs orchestral numbers most evenings and afternoon recitals at sea. Memorialize your trip by developing a travel journal and by producing photo albums and videos at the Microsoft Studio, too.

Athens (Piraeus) to Venice – Silverseas Cruises

Travel to nine ports in five different countries on this nine-day cruise from Athens to Venice. The 608-passenger Silver Spirit will start its journey with three days’ worth of stops in Greece before hitting Albania, Montenegro and Croatia; then, end your journey in beautiful, historic Venice for the final two days.

Among the nine ports you’ll visit, there are 95 excursions to take advantage of. In Santorini, visit Perissa Black Sand Beach to see one of a few different-colored beaches in the world. Or take a private van and a guide for a day of exploration. Prefer being as close to the outdoors as possible? Take a volcano hike to visit the hot springs with caique fluttering about.

Included in this Silverseas Cruises adventure fair is an economy-class air round trip, transfers between the ship and the airport, butler service in every suite, unlimited free WiFi, eight dining options, in-suite beverages (including champagne, select wines and spirits), a 24-hour dining service and onboard gratuities on one of the best Greek cruises.

These 2024 Cruises Are Sailing the Mediterranean Sea in the Off-season — Visiting Italy, Greece, and Spain Without the Crowds

You can now cruise the Med in the winter aboard Windstar Cruises' "Star Legend."

If you missed the boat on a summer trip to Europe, you can catch one on the Mediterranean Sea this winter — literally.

Windstar Cruises , known for its fleet of small ships and sailing yachts, will send Star Legend to the Med for a special winter season in 2024. Following a major renovation in 2021, the 312-passenger, all-suite ship has seven dining options (and a partnership with the James Beard Foundation), as well as an expanded fitness center and spa, and a water sports platform.

"The ship was originally scheduled to sail in the Middle East. We’ve postponed our launch in that region to begin in November 2024,” said Christopher Prelog, the president of Windstar Cruises, in a statement. "With a ship in the Mediterranean, we saw an opportunity to offer guests a legendary winter season in Europe."

Winter is, of course, the off-season for the Mediterranean , which means fewer crowds and easier access to popular landmarks and attractions. There's also the opportunity to spend the festive season in some of the most picturesque cities in Europe, which includes visiting Christmas markets. And finally, you can enjoy mild temperatures all season long.

"Our small ships and intimate atmosphere provide a truly unique way to explore Europe's winter wonderlands, while enjoying the magic of the season and the comforts and casual luxury that Windstar is known for," Prelog said.

Star Legend will sail 16 week-long cruises between Rome and Barcelona, visiting Florence and Pisa in Italy; Monte Carlo, Monaco (where the ship will overnight); and Marseille, France. Overnights in Rome and Barcelona will offer ample time to explore the cities. There are also two holiday itineraries: an eight-day cruise over Christmas, and a nine-day cruise over New Year's. Then, the final itinerary of the winter season will be a nine-day cruise from Rome to Athens, with ports of call along the Amalfi Coast and in Greece.

So, if you're itching to get to Europe long before next summer, it's time to add a Windstar Cruise to your travel wish list.

Bookings for the special winter 2024 itineraries on Star Legend will open on Nov. 6 at windstarcruises.com .

2024 Greek Isles Cruise Must-Visit Sites

With an array of islands to discover, you might be wondering what to do and see in each location. Discover some must-visit sites and shore excursions at several popular Greek islands to inspire your travel planning.

Santorini is one of the world's most photogenic islands. It's renowned for its cliffside views of the sea, the caldera, and azure waters. Santorini owes its remarkable geography to a volcanic eruption more than 3,500 years ago, and some believe it is the site of the long-lost city of Atlantis. To experience the volcano closely, you can book a shore excursion that includes a brisk hike to the crater of this active volcano. Return to the island and celebrate your accomplishment with lunch in the clifftop town of Fira.

The village of Oia, known for its iconic postcard images of Santorini, is also a must-visit destination. Wander through the narrow alleys and discover Oia's hidden charms. Oenophiles might consider a wine tour that brings them to one of the island's famous wineries. Here, you can learn all about the interesting growing methods and the island's prized Assyrtiko wines.

Mykonos is known for its lively parties and offers abundant sightseeing opportunities. Take a walking tour to delve into the history and lifestyle of this beloved Aegean island. Witness the iconic windmills and the Little Venice neighborhood. If you're intrigued by Greek mythology, take a shore excursion to the nearby island of Delos. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is the mythical birthplace of Apollo and Artemis.

Upon arriving in Corfu , you'll immediately notice how lush the island is. Relish views of hillside villages and shimmering waters. Opt for an excursion on a scenic drive through the countryside, teeming with olive and lemon trees. You'll drive along the coastal road of Perama, stop for photos at Mouse Island, and visit Old Town Corfu. If you prefer to explore independently, book the Hop-On Hop-Off bus that takes you to famous sights in Corfu while riding on an open-air double-decker bus.

Kerkyra, Corfu, Greece

Argostoli calls the Ionian island of Kefalonia home. Argostoli presents a modern face due to a devastating earthquake in 1953 that destroyed most of the island's significant structures. Despite its lack of historical architecture, Kefalonia offers plenty of contemporary charm and is brimming with eateries, boutiques, and terraces. Explore a 12th-century Byzantine castle and marvel at the stunning 16th-century frescoes. Or visit the subterranean Lake of Melissani, where ancient stalactites and light streams transform the water into a vivid shade of blue.

Rhodes was once the home of the Colossus of Rhodes, one of the original Seven Wonders of the World. The island features a captivating walled city that merits a visit if your Norwegian Greek Isles itinerary includes a day here. Excursions on Rhodes include the ancient town of Lindos with its beautiful acropolis or the majestic Grand Masters Palace. Alternatively, consider a journey to Ancient Lindos and Medieval Rhodes. Book a sailing trip along the eastern shore with a swimming and snorkeling stop if you'd like to explore Rhodes from the water.

Lindos, Rhodes, Greece

Situated on the island of Crete, Heraklion boasts abundant ancient Venetian architecture from the 13th century, including imposing fortified walls. This city is also the gateway to the Minoan Knossos Palace, the alleged birthplace of the mythological Minotaur. Shore excursions on Crete may include visits to Knossos and Heraklion or traditional villages. If you're a wine enthusiast, consider a tour of the renowned wine-producing region of Peza.

Patmos offers an abundance of natural beauty and religious history. Some biblical scholars believe John, one of Jesus' apostles, penned the Book of Revelation here. As a cruise passenger, you can visit the Monastery of Saint-John the Theologian, where you'll find the chapel built above the cave where St. John lived and received the revelation. Immerse yourself in Patmos' natural splendor and visit the island's picturesque pebbled beaches and serene villages.

Skala Village Harbor, Patmos, Greece

Katakolon serves as the port of call for Olympia, the dwelling of Greek gods and the birthplace of the Olympic Games. Situated on the Ionian Sea, Katakolon and Olympia offer passengers on a Norwegian Greek Isles cruise an opportunity to step back into some of the most significant historical sites in the Mediterranean.
