I’m not a scrapbooker. Or a diary-writer.

I try SO HARD and I dutifully buy a new diary every single year… and then forget to write in it until August. Heck, I’ve even tried one of those ‘one line a day’ diaries… still nada.

But a road trip travel logbook is something else…

Why Write a Road Trip Log Book?

Before motorhomes, we lived on boats for 15 years. Writing a log book every time we went sailing was essential.

It was part legal document, part way of making sure we’d checked the tides. Writing the journal was just one of the tasks we had to do, both before we set off and during the trip. It became habit.

And those logbooks are GOLD.

Even now, years later, we love reading through them, remembering the funny/ foolish/ embarrassing things we did. It’s the best keepsake we could ever have , (especially the mini arguments we had, where one of us wrote a silly comment in the log, so the other replied… and we filled up 3 pages with utter nonsense!)

That’s EXACTLY why a motorhome/ caravan logbook is so essential- it’s a living record of your adventures, created AS they happen… not 5 years later when you’re trying to remember.

Something that makes this journal different is a back cover pocket to store business cards, maps, receipts, or other miscellaneous items. Also featured is an elastic band attached to the back cover to hold the journal in place, which is handy since there will be loose items in the pocket.

Within this 6 ¼” x 8 ¼” hardcover journal, you’ll have 160 pages with fill-ins to jot down amenities, attractions, and other notable campsite information.

This logbook, in particular, has several sections for different trips, so if you need more than just a few pages to record your adventure, this may not be a suitable purchase. However, a few pages can be used well if you don’t plan on using many for picture

Family Camping Journal

The Family Camping Journal will differ from the usual “logging” type. This journal will be more like actual journaling, with its prompts being exactly that: prompts. For example, one prompt may start with something like, “Today we did…” or “Next time, I’ll be sure to…”.

The 8.5” x 11” softcover book is a bit on the larger side but has just as much writing room as others within the 126 pages. It will still include a few lines to record campsite information but is more focussed on recording the memories.

The design on the cover features words commonly used while traveling in an RV, such as campfire, nature, and the phrase, “gone fishing.”

Although many customers reviewed it with positive feedback, some did wish the prewritten prompts either weren’t included or just had less to include more of their ideas.

RV Logbook Camping Journal

This style will suit anyone since it showcases a simple flannel vibe or buffalo check cover. It is similar to a composition notebook with its 6” x 9” premium matte soft cover. One hundred and one pages are included, with several checklist pages for each trip taken and the extra pages in between for notes.

The checklist will incorporate the campsite information section similar to the competitions. However, the checklist will list many things you may not initially think of to record.

Some examples are hiking trails, being pet friendly, and the type of pavement. Although this may be the perfect camping journal, keep in mind that it doesn’t have nearly as many pages as others, so it may be more suitable for those who don’t dedicate as much time to travel.

CaravanArchives.com is an active project to digitally compile information and documentation for touring caravans, especially those that were manufactured by companies that are no longer in business.

Our online library contains hundreds of  brochures ,  handbooks  and instruction manuals on all of the popular touring caravan brand names.

Where possible, we have documentation from as early as the 1970s right up until the present year.

Is it a problem if there is no log book for caravan?

My son wants to buy a £3800 caravan. Being young he doesnt know about log books. But here isnt one for this caravan. I said...... cars come with a log book as proof of ownership. (I think thats the reason). Can he expect trouble if he buys the caravan. What happens if it a stolen one? Will he have trouble selling it on latter without a log book? Can he check anywhere if its stolen? Will he have trouble insuring it without a log book? I told him not to do anything tomorrow money wise until i posted this thread. Thanks for the replies.

Hi, didn't get any sort of log book with ours. It was registered on the cris scheme tho, this was etched onto the windows and when we bought the van it was transferred into our name. Think it was £14 to do. Oozzie

OK there is no DVLA style log book with a caravan IF the caravan has been registered with CRIS then it will have EVERY window etched with a code ours WAS SGBSC05BY303000xx the code identifies it as GB BY is Bailey 303 is the Pageant Champagne series the last five is the caravans number IF it doesn't have these numbers it's older than 1990 At £3800 the van should be at least 2006 or younger has he got a damp tester or a caravan mechanic to give it a check ........

Our 2010 caravan was registered with CRIS.

There is no "log book" for a caravan, in the sense that it is registered with the DVLA. Unlike most of Europe caravans and trailers are not separately registered in the UK.  

Just an aside to this ... has your son got the relevant qualification on his licence to be able to tow a caravan? Is his vehicle capable of towing it?

The Nomad said: If you buy anything that was stolen you do not get "good title" to it, as the thief/seller didn't possess good title to pass on to you. Thus in law it never actually belongs to you. If the police or real owner from whom it was stolen or insurance company who paid out on the theft locate the caravan, they will sieze it to return to the legal owner. You get nothing. A big reason for exercising a whole lot of "caveat emptor" before parting with any money for anything second-hand, especially big cost items such ss vehicles and caravans that are easy to steal. loads of info on both ccc and caravan club websites  

At the time we had ours there was an organisation called cris that kept a register of caravan chassis no's and the owners but as I said it was biased towards uk manufactured ones . Heres a link https://www.cris.co.uk/registration/?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIjMOvsMCN1QIVh7ftCh1x7wBgEAAYASAAEgLDEPD_BwE I don't think its legally binding but might give some reassurance if its listed to the current seller. Of course there will be some nicked ones for sale but the odds of buying on will be remote provided the price asked is reasonable if its dead cheap for its age/condition I would be wary. I have no idea of current values but a quick web search should give an idea. Our hobby was really good build quality and they are preferred by a lot of people who live in them year round!!!!  

Thank you all for your replies, and I have checked out the CHRIS site, where this van might or might not be registered. As I now have a copy of the vin number, I will do that tomorrow. It might not be registered as it a german make. But then it might be inported and registered or not. I have also joined the hobby site for more info, and have the uk number to call tomorrow, but have not received any replies from that site. THERE DOES SEEM TO BE A PROBLEM. The vin number does not appear to be a 2006 model, from what I have learnt on line. However there is contradictory information. Some info say the last number of vin is the year, some sites say its the number after the GOF number on vin , is the year. Other sites say something else. The vin number is WHB27B25G0FW5507. With all the confusion this might be a 1995, 1998, or 1997. Does anyone on here know? However the confusion is even more, in that the stripes on the van don't match up. Pre 2002, there is 5 blue stripes. After 2003, there is 3 blue stripes. This van has only two blue stripes. I have spoke to the seller, who says the van is in storage. He can tow the van for my son, to desired location. (son drives a mopehead). He cant show the electrics working as it in storage. He has no paperwork, and did not do a check on the van when he brought it. Some others interested in the van have pointed out to him it isn't a 2006 model. He doesn't mind cash or bank trf. He is neg on the price. He doesn't know the make or model but his girlfiriend thinks it a prestige model. I have emailed my son the following things he needs to do to try and protect himself. 1. Take a snapshot of the guys gov issued id, ie passport or driving licence. ...If possible take one of the girl friends as well, as the van not at a home address. 2. Get a receipt in my name. 3. Son to pay 2 grand cash out of his money. Me to pay by bank trf using my CREDIT card for the balance. Hoping section 75 will protect me. (I have done a thread on the protection of 75 and credit cards) 4. Check the vin number on the van, given me is the same as what the guy sent me. (this up till now could be a stolen vin number, or someone elses vin vin number) 5. Borrow a generator to check the electrics, and get to Halfords for a damp detector, and check damp and give me the readings. 6. If all goes ahead, offer the guy £100 pounds to tow to site. Then cash and bank payment made, when on site. 7. Get to Halfords asp, after checking the wheels and get a wheel lock. (due to sons age, he cant remove the wheels. The tow bar lock I have here at home, quite far from the location, and prefer the wheel lock as well ). Have I left some security out? With the vin number can someone tell me something about the caravan. Thanks for help.

I'm sorry , but if you are suspicious and worried why are you putting yourself through this, there are literally 1000s of straight caravans for sale and if he only has a moped how is he going to move it.  

If it was my son I'd do my best to insist he walks away. As a previous poster said, there are lots of caravans about that are obviously genuine. Ask yourself if your son can afford to pay nearly £4,000 for something that may be worth 2 if that. How did the buyer end up with a caravan if he knows so little about them? Malcolm

My wife and I sold everything to become nomads and discovered ferries were the best way to travel — except for 2 downsides

• Norm Bour left California and started traveling full time with his wife in February 2019.
• Whenever possible, they prefer taking ferries for the lower cost and better travel experience.
• Bour suggests ferry travelers arrive early and bring their own food for a stress-free journey.

This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Norm Bour, a 69-year-old nomad who prefers ferry travel. The following has been edited for length and clarity.

I spent most of my life living in California and most of my career in real estate, but in 2008, the recession destroyed my business.

I reinvented myself as a consultant for the CBD industry, and in 2016, I was invited to speak at three events, in Amsterdam, Prague, and Warsaw, Poland. I was 62, and it was my first time in Europe. I spent three weeks traveling to different cities and had an aha moment.

It charmed me how people overseas seemed to enjoy life to the fullest and were not in a rush-rush mindset like most Americans I knew.

That trip made me want to travel more

A friend recommended I check out an app called TravelPirates . It shares discounted flights to international destinations. I started scanning the app for deals, and over the next two years, I traveled to Iceland, Spain, Portugal, France, and many other places with my wife, Kathleen.

At the end of 2018, we decided to become nomads. We sold everything, bought one-way tickets to Valencia, Spain, and left in February 2019. Because my business was remote, I could work from anywhere.

Since then, we've traveled to 37 countries, and we take ferries whenever we can. There's nothing better than sitting on the top deck of a ferry looking out at the ocean and watching the birds. It makes traveling less boring.

Taking a ferry is often a less expensive way to travel

More often than not, taking a ferry is cheaper than airfare, but it does take longer.

On a trip from Rome to Split, Croatia, in May 2019, it would've taken us a little over an hour to get there on a plane and cost about $300 for the dates we were looking at. Instead, we took an overnight ferry that lasted 11 hours but cost us only $60.

Sometimes people take trains to save money or if they have a fear of flying, but some romanticize it because you get to see more of the land you're passing by.

I feel the same way about being on a ferry. There's something so magical about being on a boat while seeing the world around you.

There are many tools you can use to book ferries

I often use Ferryhopper or Rome2Rio to help plan our ferry travel. My usual technique is to first Google "ferry from A to B" to see whether I can find a specific company to use. That increases the chances of getting an online ticket and QR code, relieving the stress of getting a seat.

Shorter ferries rarely sell out, and they run more frequently, so there's a good chance you can catch the next one if you miss your first option. The longer ferries are more selective, and it's a good idea to get your ticket in advance.

Taking a combination of shorter and longer ferries has allowed us to see more places than if we traveled just by land, including on our 87-day motorcycle trip through six countries. We brought the motorcycle on the ferries with us.

Long ferry rides give you the chance to meet people

Ferry rides that are 8 to 12 hours or longer often happen overnight. On those boats, you can buy a general-seating ticket or a room with a bed. I prefer these longer trips because you get to see more and often get to interact with different types of people.

One of my most fun ferry experiences was when we traveled 12 hours from Sicily to Tunisia in December 2019.

It was a unique experience traveling with Tunisians who were mostly Muslim. They did their call to prayer in the hallways several times during our journey, and one family asked us whether we wanted to share what little food they had.

We spent most of the ride meeting people and learning about their cultures. There's no way we would've had that experience if we took the four-hour plane ride.

The only downsides of taking a ferry are the food options and potential for seasickness

Most people on ferries bring their own food because there aren't always reliable eating options on board. Some longer ferry rides may have snacks for sale, but you rarely find full meals. We usually bring pastries, fruit, and sandwiches.

I've never experienced seasickness, but I know some people may not want to take a ferry because of that fear. My wife is prone to motion sickness, so she takes medication like Bonine or Dramamine before we travel.

She also wears seasickness bands that push against different pressure points to help minimize nausea.

Don't arrive at the port last minute when taking a ferry

If you're taking a ferry, I recommend you arrive at least an hour before it departs. You want to leave plenty of time because when you're traveling internationally, you have to go through immigration and passport control. There can be long lines for that process and long security lines before getting on board.

We try to get tickets in advance online, but you have to buy tickets through some companies on-site, which can also lead to long lines.

Always have a back-up plan

When you're traveling during the months when the seas can be rough, have a backup plan in case ferries are canceled.

In December 2019, we were staying in Athens and decided to take a ferry to Naxos before leaving Greece for Singapore. When we tried to go back to Athens from Naxos, the ferries were canceled because of the weather. We had nonrefundable flights from Athens to Singapore and would've lost a couple hundred dollars if we missed that flight.

We scrambled and found a flight from Naxos to Athens, which helped us continue our trip as planned.

We won't be heading home anytime soon

When my wife and I first left to become nomads, people asked us whether we were ever coming back. Our response was that we probably weren't. We go back home only once or twice a year and imagine we'll go back even less as we continue to travel.

After traveling for five years and seeing the world, I hope we can continue to do this for the rest of our lives. I don't want to grow old in some nursing home or sit on the couch and watch TV. I want to see as much of the world as I can, whether it's on a plane, train, or my personal favorite, a ferry.

Do caravans have logbooks.

When you own and operate vehicles like cars and vans, that represent a considerable investment, it is important to have legal documentation that shows you are the owner. Just as you would have the legal documentation such as the title deeds that show you own your house or flat, you will have what is known as either a V5, V5C or vehicle logbook for your car or van.

Given how expensive even second-hand caravans can be, it would seem only fair to assume that there is some kind of documentation that is proof of legal ownership of touring vehicles. However, at the moment at the very least, there is no such thing as caravan logbooks.

Why Are Caravan Logbooks Not a Thing?

The logbook or V5 you have with your car is the documentation that legally registers the vehicle in your name with the DVLA as proof that you own it. This is a form of documentation, however, is only used for vehicles you actually drive. Caravans, therefore, as they are considered to be nothing more than trailers, cannot be registered with the DVLA.

The interesting thing is that most countries in continental Europe take a different approach and have similar legal documentation for cars, vans and other drivable vehicles and touring vehicles like caravans.

What Else Can You Do to Prove Ownership?

Well, except for property and vehicles, the only real way you can prove ownership of high-value items like televisions, computers and sofas etc. is with paperwork like receipts and insurance details. If the caravan you own or are thinking about buying is made in Britain, you can register through CRIS.

What is CRiS and Why is it a Good Idea to Get Your Caravan CRiS Registered?

CRiS stands for Caravan Registration and Identification Scheme and was set up by The National Caravan Council in 1992. The purpose of the CRiS was to have a record of all keeper details for all tourers manufactured by British companies that are members of the NCC to help with the detection and prevention of crimes involving caravans.

Is CRiS Registration Compulsory?

No, it is not compulsory to have your caravan registered through CRiS. That is why when you are looking at used caravans, you may find that new owners have not registered the tourer in their name. It is still something you should consider as the Scheme and the police work closely together. In fact, any caravan that is reported stolen or that has been involved in a major road accident is recorded by the scheme.

So, when buying a used caravan it is a good idea to check if it is CRiS registered and if the details match up with the person selling. If it doesn’t and it ever is reported stolen and the police find it, it will be seized from you and you will get nothing for your trouble.

It is, therefore, equally important that you make sure you register your caravan with the CRiS as soon as possible.
