"The Art Of Survival" encompasses the resiliency of the human spirit in the face of trial and tribulations as the band's own enduring place as rock outliers. Songs such as "Kiss Me I'm Dead" and "Gun Fight" represent the horrors that's going on in this country, while "Identity" , "Shark Bite" and "Creatures of The Fire" capture the strength of people during these dark times. BUSH 's euphoric rock revelation "Heavy Is The Ocean" encourages love and recognizes the bravery behind freely expressing your feelings.
Forging ahead once more, BUSH wrote and recorded what would become "The Art of Survival" during 2022, reteaming with Erik Ron ( PANIC! AT THE DISCO , GODSMACK ) who produced "Flowers On A Grave" and the title track for the group's previous album, "The Kingdom" (2020),and collaborating once again on two tracks with film composer, musician, and producer Tyler Bates ( "300" , "Guardian Of The Galaxy").
In a recent interview with Stereogum , Rossdale was asked about the "more metallic sound" of "The Art Of Survival" compared to BUSH 's earlier efforts. He responded: "Metallic, or metal? It's not a metal record, 'cause I don't sing that way, [but] look, I'm always trying to push.
"I totally accept rock's position in the culture, which is pretty — it's weird 'cause on the one hand it's nonexistent, and on the other hand, I'm playing to 350,000 people over the course of, like, two months. [Those aren't] 350,000 invisible people.
"For me, as a songwriter, I'm just always looking for different ways to challenge myself and keep it fresh, keep it interesting in service of a long career. People can either mellow out into the sunset, or they do something like I've done with 'The Kingdom' and with 'The Art Of Survival' , which is try and fight, go against the tide of the success of the band, try and create records that exist in their entirety on their own. They don't lean on the previous work, you know? To me, it's just trying to find what inspires me, what's interesting, what I like in a studio, that's really what it is. And I get the luxury of being to an extent my own producer, where I can make tracks for myself to sing on. And then I collaborate, I sing on other people's music, whatever, I'm very collaborative. But in terms of the meat of the record and getting the aesthetic going, it's just me in a room, and I've noticed that these last few years so much is given to the live performance.
"I play metal festivals, rock festivals, alternative, more pop-leaning festivals sometimes, not often, so I would find myself over the years choosing the heavier songs off of certain records. You want to survive amongst peers on those stages and not be just going [ sings mournfully ], 'Swallowed…' [ Laughs ] It's a bit much. It just got into that situation, and I had that one record that we did called 'Institute' , which is all [written in] drop C sharp and it was really fun to do, and I don't know, I just kind of felt there was something about that that's exciting to me. People have said about the last two records, 'Oh, it sounds like old BUSH ,' you know? And I think that non-musical people just think that 'cause the intention and the vitality to it is consistent, that's what it is. Musically it's completely different.
"I read people writing about the dearth of inspiration in rock music, and how it can be a bit homogenized, because I think rock radio can be seen as a homogenous sound, going for a certain thing, whereas everyone else in the pop world can be far more experimental and way out there. And to me it's just as simple as trying to stay interesting to ourselves, and create excitement like that."

What a great show by Bush at Red Rocks.
Rossdale's energy was there for every song and even after going nonstop for 8 songs he he still had the energy to go up through the audience through 70 rows of seats while singing, come back down and go straight into the next song. Some feat for someone who isn't used to our altitude.
I think Bush only played 10 songs though while STP played 12 and the Cult 11. If anyone should have had less time I wish it were the Cult and not Bush. I'll absolutely watch Bush if they come back next year.

I was blown away by the overall performance and presentation of Bush. It was a visually pleasing show with background videos and multi color lights for each song. Gavin delivered a killer performance on vocals plus he was super friendily with fans running around the venue. The band was cohesive in music and it felt like listening to any of their albums. I would definitely see them live again and recommend Bush if you're a big fan.
These guys rock, after so many years they still put an amazing show full of energy.
They played hits from all their albums including many from their first one and it felt like grunge never ended.
Also great visuals on a massive screen behind them.
When they played "little things" Gavin dived into the crowd and joined pogo dancing crossed all the dancefloor and reappeared on the 2nd floor where he continued singing and partying with the audience, proper epic!

BUSH CONCERT REVIEW

SOLD OUT! Yes, Bush is still selling out venues across the country on their Art of Survival Tour. In addition to being the title of the band’s ninth studio album (released in October 2022), the fine art of survival is something that the Gavin Rossdale-fronted act has mastered.
To survive in the music industry since 1994, which saw the release of Bush’s 6x platinum-selling debut, ‘Sixteen Stone’ …here they are, nearly 30 years later, still packing venues from coast to coast. Sure, these aren’t the arena shows that instantly sold out in the 90s, but any act that can pack a house in parts of four separate decades is damn successful in this reviewer’s book.
Bravely kicking off their set with “Identity” off of ‘The Art of Survival’ a tune that, let’s be honest, many in the audience have failed to familiarize themselves with, Rossdale and Co. sent the audience into a tizzy when the second song on the setlist, “ Machinehead ,” opened with the familiar lead guitar from Chris Traynor.
Memories flooded my brain of being a middle school kid on the school bus listening to this song on a cassette tape (after I recorded it off the radio), a time during which I could only dream of one day attending a concert, let alone, seeing Bush in the flesh.
Tonight was not my first time seeing this band; it presumably won’t be my last. And, every damn time I catch these guys onstage, I’m reminded of how fortunate I am to see one of my first rock ‘n’ roll heroes. I’m reminded of how fortunate I am to be doing this as a side hustle, photographing and reviewing the artists I love.

Other set highlights included “ The Chemicals Between Us” and “Everything Zen.” Preceding the latter, Rossdale exited the stage for “Flowers On a Grave” to join the revelers in the audience; offering a few lucky fans a high five!
It’s not lost on me that Bush inspired my love for alternative rock. For that, this band will always hold a special place in my heart.
To be clear, tonight was far more than a trip down Nostalgia Drive! The four tunes the band played from their new record are evidence that despite having nothing left to prove, Bush still has the motivation to put out music with the same power and integrity that they did in 1994.
Is it as popular?
Is it just as good?
Well…if I’m being honest…meh.
But if the new record and performance thereof tell fans anything, is that there is still plenty of drive and passion left in the tank. Yes, Bush could tour from now through the end of the world on the back of their past catalog. These guys aren’t content resting on their laurels. For that, they deserve respect.

To the select few dumbasses that left prior to the encore to deposit their hard-earned money into the coin slot of a wealthy casino conglomerate: You. Missed. Out. Big time.
As part of a three-song encore, Rossdale, in the absence of his bandmates and armed with only his guitar, performed Bush’s smash hit, “Glycerine” , which was accompanied by heavy audience participation.
Before saying “goodnight,” Bush sent everyone back out to the casino floor with “Comedown.” I wasn’t ready to come down from my cloud of joy, but alas, the house lights came up and I pushed my way through the packed crowd to the exits.

CLEVELAND, Ohio-- “Bold, weird and terrifying.” “A masterclass in writing dark, emotive pop.” “You hear one note of a Kate Bush song, and you know it’s her.”
Those influenced by Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Kate Bush had nothing but a mysterious, heartfelt glow to share.
Much like Bush herself.
Even an intro by rapper Big Boi was a gush. He copped to listening to “Running Up That Hill” every morning on his bike on the way to school before inducting Bush.

“I was that kid in ‘Stranger Things’!” Big Boi smiled. It was a bit of a strange moment, but then again, few things are stranger than what’s happened for the woman from Kent, England in the last year.
Boi would return to introduce singer-songwriter St. Vincent, who absolutely slayed the hit in performance. After this and being the Kurt Cobain part in Nirvana’s 2014 induction, it seems there’s nothing she can’t do. Much like Bush herself.
Singer, songwriter, producer, and instrumentalist…is there anything Kate Bush can’t do? A reclusive songwriter-chanteuse, Bush is best known for the 1985 song “Running Up That Hill (Make a Deal with God),” watched it become her first-ever No. 1 song in the United States—thanks to the first-ever placement in the Duffer Brothers’ retro sci-fi Netflix series “Stranger Things.”
Bush’s single “went running up that chart,” topping the Apple Music singles chart 37 years after its release, reaching the top 10 in 34 countries.
In the show, “Hill” frames a desperate moment where Max (Sadie Sink) mourns the loss of her half-brother Billy. Like so many kids in the 80s, where “Stranger Things” takes place, she copes with her grief with the song on repeat . The song ends up saving her life later in a psychic battle with Season Four’s big-bad, the underworldly “Vecna.”
By then, Bush had already appeared on the nominees’ list for the Rock Hall’s Performers list three other times. The fourth time came weeks before Season Four was released and it was the charm—much to the delight and relief of her wholly (er, holy? ) devoted following.
All these things, including an induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Class of 2023 wasn’t enough to bring Bush running down that hill. She took to her website to address her absence to fans:
I am completely blown away by this huge honour—an award that sits in the big beating heart of the American music industry.
Thank you so much to everyone who voted for me. I never imagined I would be given this wonderful accolade.
Last year was such a surprisingly successful time for my track Running Up That Hill and I’m sure that a lot of you who’ve voted me into the RRHOF also drove that track up the charts. Thank you!
I’m afraid I won’t be able to attend the ceremony tonight, but for me the real honour is knowing that you felt I deserved it.
The RRHOF has welcomed me into the most extraordinary rostrum of overwhelming talent.
When I was growing up my hero was Elton John. I poured over his music, longed to be able to play piano like him and longed to write songs that could move people in the way his work moved me.
That little girl in South East London could never have dreamed she’d be sharing the event tonight with Bernie Taupin, Elton’s writing partner, an incredible lyricist who inspired me to keep writing songs – to keep trying. Congratulations Bernie! Congratulations to everyone who is being inducted tonight!
Music is at the core of who I am and, like all musicians, being on the journey of trying to create something musically interesting is rife with feelings of doubt and insecurity.
I’m only five foot three, but today I feel a little taller.
Bush’s theatrical, four-decade career that began at the tender age of 17, when she signed a record deal with EMI. Her debut single “Wuthering Heights”— inspired by Emily Brontë's novel of the same name—was a vivid, almost operatic rumination on doomed love and emotional destruction.
She was the first woman to reach No. 1 in the U.K. with the self-written song.
Vivid, literary qualities have anchored much of Bush’s work, which has careened between rock, pop, baroque, classical, and electronic music—peppered with occasional progressive rock flourishes.
She embraced electronic music, synthesizers and an avant-garde approach that only Laurie Anderson had tread prior to Bush’s arrival on the music scene.
With 1985′s pièce de resistance “The Hounds of Love” (which includes “Running Up that Hill”) Bush hit her creative stride. The track and her swirling, hypnotic single “Cloudbusting” set the tone for fearlessness and fierce commitment to artistic integrity, yet clung to a quirky, enigmatic energy.
In the years after the album—perhaps apart from her duet with Peter Gabriel on “Don’t Give Up” for his seminal “So” album in 1986—Bush’s output began to scale back.
That Bush was absent from Brooklyn on Friday is hardly a surprise or a “first.”
She’s only made occasional live appearances since the early 90s, her last being a 2014 “Before the Dawn” residency at the Hammersmith Apollo in London. These shows represented her first live concert series in 35 years. They now stand as perhaps the very last of her public appearances.
“There’s always a kind of divine intervention that is part of the creative process, but it is also divinely personal,” Bush said in a pre-recorded interview before her induction.
