Yatala brewery still powering along

But if you want to be amazed by the enormity of the place that produces a quarter of Australia’s beer supply, then this is your place. This is a brewery of epic proportions and a monument to the clinical efficiency that quenches a country’s thirst.

The tour itself is an avalanche of facts and figures, overwhelming the visitor with the scale of production. The brewery produces two million cans and three million stubbies a day, or 1.8 billion a year. Sixty-six thousand bottles pass through the pasteuriser at a time on their way to the bottling line running at 1,200 bottles per minute. Every bottle of beer runs through 87 different checks and inspections from the moment it enters the plant as a fraction of the 480 tonnes of grain used each week until the time it sits packed and waiting in the 6.1 hectare warehouse that would take over 3 weeks to empty.

Everything about the plant can, and is, measured. Our guide even cheerfully tells us that the farmers who buy the spent grain for their dairy cattle report their cows produce 30 per cent more milk.

The current brewery is 20 times larger now than when it began life as Powers Brewery.

The current brewery is 20 times larger now than when it began life as Powers Brewery in the late 1980s. It was built when enterprising hotelier Bernie Power sensed a chink in XXXX’s stranglehold over Queensland’s beer market after Alan Bond upset the state’s parochial drinkers with his takeover and rebranding of the iconic label.

Following a period of intense – but ultimately unsustainable -competition that saw Powers Bitter snatch 10 per cent of the market, Power went into a joint venture with CUB in 1992. He sold out of the business entirely the following year. What he left was a modern, efficient plant that has proved the perfect base for what is now the Fosters Group’s northern brewing operation.

Production has doubled since 2000 when Carlton and United closed its Kent Street brewery in Sydney and moved production north. With the recent closure of the Matilda Bay site in WA, Yatala and Victoria’s Abbotsford Breweries are the group’s brewing centres, with Yatala producing all of Fosters major beer brands for distribution through Queensland, Northern Territory and much of New South Wales.

The gleaming tops of the kettles

Perhaps the disappointment of the tour is that at the conclusion of the visit, once you have said goodbye to the enormous stainless steel mash tuns and kettles (or the gleaming tops of them at least), the bottling line and its never-ending stream of bottles and the cavernous warehouse, you have an understanding of the production process, but no real feel for how beer is made. The brewing novice departs with about as much understanding of brewing as a visit to a modern hospital teaches about the human body. But then again, that’s not really the point of the hour-long tour.

The lasting impression gained from the tour, apart from the sheer scale, is the brewery’s relentless quest for quality control and consistency in their product. Ask any of the country’s growing population of small brewers and they will confirm the technical achievement here.

When you are dealing with grain bills that can vary from season to season, yeast that is essentially an untamed single-cell monster and countless billions of other micro-organisms whose only aim is to spoil your beer, the ability to turn out almost two billion stubbies of beer with each tasting just like the last is a monumental achievement and a tribute to the science of brewing. It is well worth seeing.

More insight into the brewing process is gained from the Carlton Brewhouse, the $4 million interactive Visitors Centre that serves as the start and end point of the tour. An interactive display lets you perfect your own brew and at the end of the visit you can jump the bar and take a turn at pouring and tasting some of the brewery’s product.

An appetising selection of pub meals are available to sate the hungry and the lover of branded beer merchandise will be in heaven passing through the gift shop.

It may be huge and a little impersonal, but as another Australian summer rolls around there will be a lot of people grateful for each of the 540 million litres of amber the Yatala brewery has produced this year.

Tours are conducted Monday-Saturday.

Cost $25 Adults, $20 Seniors, $10 Children (under 17). Tour includes one-hour guided tour, beer tasting and souvenier gift (Adults & Seniors only). Bookings essential.

Carlton Brewhouse Yatala, Qld

Went there with my husband, using a groupon voucher. We lived in the area for 20 years and thanks to Groupon finally got to see the brewery. We thoroughly enjoyed the tours. You get into a tram and the guide takes you around the different parts of brewery. The guide was very informative, but spoke a little to fast. When the tour was finish you go to the brew house where you sample the different beers on tap. My favourite was Fat Yak. The beer was full pot glasses not little shot glasses. We were given lunch that was included in our tour. Could not fault the food. We got to mix with the other people on the tour, turns out they too were from Brisbane. Had a very enjoyable day with everyone. Recommend this tour especially if you can get a discount voucher.

My husband and I completed this tour on a Saturday morning so the factory lines weren't actually working (knew this at booking but time restraints limited our options). However, our guide still made the commentary very interesting and amusing and her knowledge of all the facts and figures was extraordinary! The tour is a combination of people-mover and walking, so a low fitness level is fine, as long as you can manage stairs reasonably well (there are elevators in some areas). The ticket price includes your choice of three beers at the conclusion of the tour....a good opportunity to try those you may not have access to in your usual pub! I recommend adding the meal to your ticket price.....limited choices but delicious food and massive serves! Yum!! Finally, the souvenir shop is well priced and has an excellent variety of gifts at reasonable prices for those beer lovers in your life. I would actually like to have the opportunity to take this tour again, perhaps mid-week, to see the production lines in full action.....and that's coming from a non-drinker!

Great tour and fantastic to see how they make beer and the whole process from the raw ingredient to the finished product being loaded on to trucks. Lunch in the Bistro must be one of the best kept secrets on the Gold Coast. Great food, large servings of quality produce and very prompt service. A must for anyone who loves great food and freshest beer!!! Strongly recommend worth the drive.

Carlton Yatala is on of Australia's most modern breweries, with a sophisticated and highly automated brewing process. Consequently, the tour is of a very modern facility, and there are some limitations on what you can see. The helpful and engaging guide gives you an explanation of the brewing activities. You see the large tanks where they brew the beer, as well as the bottling hall where they package the beer. The tour takes about an hour, and it does involve significant walking, including climbing several flights of stairs. After the tour, you return to the Visitor Center. Depending on the tour you take, you can sample the beers they produce at the brewery. The offer a "beer enthusiast's" tour including a tasting paddle of 8 beers for AUD 29. Also, they offer reasonably priced meals- which are served either in the modern bar or the outside beer garden. I had tasty reef fish and chips. It's worthwhile visiting if you're interested in brewing or modern industrial facilities. Others may find it is not engaging, due to the specialist nature of the tour.

Visited on a Saturday for the brewery tour and lunch. Although brewery was not operating the tour was informative and fun. Beer tasting and lunch was excellent! Brewery is close to both Brisbane and Gold Coast. Great place to stop during a road trip.

POWER’S BEER IS BACK

POWER’S BEER IS BACK

Iconic Queensland beer Power’s will finally flow again across the Sunshine State, 35 years after a Brisbane publican built a brewery, took on the industry and hit the big time.

Two years in the planning, a new Power’s Ultra Smooth Lager will be sold at pubs, clubs and bottleshops – decades after it was last widely available. A new modern take on a true classic. Power’s Ultra Smooth is a new smooth and crisp beer specifically brewed for warm weather, modern tastes and with a packaging that pays tribute to the pivotal time in Queensland’s history when Bernie Power built the Yatala Brewery in 1988. The Sunshine State embraced one of their own and – when Power’s sponsored the Broncos in their inaugural season and beyond – together they wrote themselves into Queensland folklore.

Carlton & United Breweries (CUB) Queensland State Manager, Ian Giles , said:

“The relaunch of the Power’s brand marks the return of a Queensland icon that celebrated our underdog spirit and showed the rest of Australia there was nothing we couldn’t do.

“It was so popular that it sold out on day 1 and never returned to full stock, smashing all expectations to eventually capture about 20% of the Queensland beer market.

“People are yearning for simpler times, the pandemic is almost over and Queensland is well and truly open for business. Now is the right time to relaunch the Power’s brand so a new generation of beer lovers can enjoy this uniquely Queensland beer.” Founder Bernie Power said:

“Making a beer that resonates with people is a challenging thing, and I know everyone involved in this has been very careful with what has ended up inside and outside the bottle.

“I am absolutely chuffed to see the Power’s brand returning. When I sold the brewery to CUB in 1993, we were more focused on the future of our staff than we were on the future of the brand. So to see it return, and hear what it means to people, has been a wonderful thing.”

Along with its classic flavour profile, the new Power’s Ultra Smooth has slight bitterness, balanced by a light rounded body, slight malt sweetness, a crisp, smooth, clean finish and 4% ABV. While some Power’s has been brewed over the past 20 years, it was available in limited quantities, with the original Power’s Bitter not brewed in over a decade and not available on tap since the early 2000s. Power’s Ultra Smooth is being brewed at the original Yatala Brewery.

First CEO of the Brisbane Broncos John Ribot agreed Power’s was one of the best comebacks in Queensland history:

“Power’s and the Brisbane Broncos were built on shared philosophies – a bunch of intrepid, gutsy Queenslanders with a whole lot of front and can-do attitude who ended up changing the state forever.

“Bernard privately provided the seed capital to the fledgling Broncos and the players took the Power’s partnership to another level. Alfie Langer once nominated himself Power’s customer service manager, turning up to customers’ houses with a six-pack.”   Brisbane publican Bob Singleton, owner of Brisbane’s Pineapple Hotel , said:

“People still speak reverentially about Bernie Power and how he launched a beer that helped change the state forever.

“Queensland is ready for the return of a state-based brand and Power’s is a brand that is Queensland to its core. Power’s is simply a great story that will bring back great memories for people of when Queenslanders got a unique beer they could truly call their own.

“But I’m just as excited about how good it tastes. The new liquid in the bottle is as good as the story behind it!” Power’s Ultra Smooth Lager will be available across Queensland in stubbies as well as on tap from mid-February.

1988: The Brisbane Broncos become the first non-NSW team to join the NSW Rugby League (forerunner to the NRL). Power’s signs a three-year sponsorship with the fledgling team for one million dollars a year, at the time the largest sponsorship in the league’s history

1988: Brisbane Broncos debut match in the NRL competition announces their arrival with a huge 44-10 win over reigning premiers Manly

1989: Power’s Light launches in September, followed by Power’s Gold

1990: Power’s Brewery produces 140 million litres and has 20% of the Queensland market

1992: Bernard Power enters a joint venture with CUB and forms Queensland Breweries

1993: Bernard Power sells his stake to CUB in October. CUB moves their QLD brewing operations to Yatala

2000s: Power’s Bitter ceases to be brewed regularly

2011: Power’s Bitter, with just a fraction of its former market share, is brewed for the last time and the brand fades into history – or so it was thought

2023: Power’s Ultra Smooth Lager rolls off the line at Yatala Brewery – now the biggest brewery in Australia -with the first carton taken off the line and signed by Bernie Power.

Carlton & United Breweries creates Australia's biggest brewery solar project

08-Sep-2021 - Last updated on 08-Sep-2021 at 07:52 GMT

  • Email to a friend

Pic:getty/justinpaget

Around 7,000 solar panels have been installed on the roofs at the Queensland brewery, and the 3.01 MWp system is one of the largest solar installations of its kind in Australia. The panels are spread across 15,000 square meters, and generate enough energy to power more than 800 homes and nearly 9,000 beer fridges annually.

The project will let Asahi Beverages – which took over CUB last year – reduce carbon emissions in Queensland by around 100,000 tonnes over the next 25 years.

Queensland: The Sunshine State

The panels were installed over 18 months and brewing was not disrupted over this time. More than 150 kilometres of cable was laid – enough to run from Yatala to Brisbane at least three times over – and more than 20 people were employed on the project.

“Queensland is beautiful one day and perfect the next, so it makes sense to harness that perfect weather to make perfect beer,” said Tom Robinson, Yatala Brewery Plant Manager.

“We’re committed to making the Yatala Brewery more sustainable and estimate the solar we generate will be enough to brew the equivalent of around 150 million stubbies or cans each year.

“We’ve covered virtually every bit of available roof space at the Yatala brewery with panels. While it’s not enough to power the entire brewery, our goal is to ensure Yatala is powered entirely by a mix of directly-sourced and offset solar electricity within four years, in line with Asahi Beverages’ targets.”

“Asahi is at the leading edge of a quickly emerging trend among organisations to embrace ambitious projects that realise economic benefits for the business while reducing the environmental impact of business operations,” he said.

“The scope of it is amazing and sets the standard for breweries globally. We believe it’s Australia’s fifth largest “behind the meter” solar project, meaning it’s one of the largest in Australia where power is not fed back into the grid but rather used onsite.”

Asahi Beverages has set goals to reduce its overall carbon emissions by 50% by 2025.
