A favorite for tourists is the always-popular beach adjacent to the iconic Cocoa Beach Pier . It's a safe stretch of beach with lifeguards, where you're as likely to catch glimpses of surfers hitting the waves as you are families and friends engaging in a game of catch or beach volleyball.

Just two minutes by car or a 25-minute stroll farther up from the pier is pretty Lori Wilson Park , which offers easy beach access. In addition to offering ample free parking, this 32-acre park features a boardwalk and restrooms, as well as a dedicated dog park and a long boardwalk with six beach access points across the dunes. There's also easy access to Ron Jon Surf Shop which offers both retail and rental services.

Alan Shepard Park is also good for families. Here you'll find plenty of picnic space and changing rooms, all within easy walking distance to restaurants and shopping.

Although a little further afield, Playalinda Beach at the Canaveral National Seashore Reserve is worth visiting. In addition to its 24-mile-long stretch of quiet sandy beach, you can also explore the dunes, marshes, and lagoon without ever feeling crowded. Camping permits are available.

Many towns refer to themselves as "historic." But Historic Cocoa Village, the old downtown core of the city of Cocoa, truly is, and was in fact first settled in the middle of the 19th century. Now, in addition to being a shopping and entertainment district that retains its heritage ambiance, it has also become a legitimate 21st-century tourist attraction. Here, the way it was, is the way it still is.

This is a colorful, historic old-time village made for walking, with surprises behind every colorful doorway and window. It's also a tree-lined riverside community of local merchants and artisans eager to sell their wares.

Dining in any of the many restaurants here is a truly gourmet experience, while other casual eateries and cafés offer hearty fare. A favorite for those who enjoy a world-class fine-dining experience is Café Margaux , a steakhouse specializing in European flavors, while OSSORIO Bakery & Cafe is a delightful lunch or snack stop.

If time allows, be sure to visit the Florida Historical Society with its displays in the Library of Florida History. There's also plenty of information on the other fun things to do and discover about this little piece of heaven.

Author's Tip: There's plenty of free parking available located just behind the shops and businesses of Historic Cocoa Village, so take your time and truly get to know the neighborhood. If you're not in a rush, grab a Cuban sandwich take-out from Cafe de Havana and sit yourself down in one of the squares or alleyways leading off from Brevard Avenue. Bench seating is easy to find, and these quiet spots are great for a bit of introspection as you eat al fresco.

Situated in the heart of Historic Cocoa Village, the Village Playhouse opened in 1924 and remains one of the most important old buildings in the city of Cocoa. Originally named the Aladdin Theater, it's also one of the top venues on Florida's east coast for those who enjoy musicals, with its regular roster of Broadway performances leading to its having earned the nickname "Broadway on Brevard."

The attractive red-bricked building, with its white brick accents, is certainly photogenic. And it's equally appealing inside, too. With its plush red-upholstered original wood seating, red velvet curtains, and lovely plaster cornices, taking a seat today is like stepping back in time.

More than 55,000 audience members support the theater's performances each year, leading to it being one of the most successful community theaters in Florida. In addition to a regularly rotating roster of Broadway shows, guests can enjoy musical concerts and tributes, children's programming, as well as movie screenings.

Just 25 minutes drive from the beach, the Brevard Zoo is a great place to visit for interactive learning, as well as just good ol' family fun.

Set in a leafy neighborhood with plenty of free parking, this large museum features numerous artifacts and exhibits dealing with local history and science.

Among the museum's interesting displays are the remains of the oldest human discovered to date in North America, the Windover Woman. There's also a fascinating recreation of the Windover dig, which unearthed the remains in nearby Titusville in 1982. Other exhibits detail the lives of Native Americans and the early pioneers, as well as the early days of the railroad in Cocoa.

Be sure to allow time to explore the excellent trail network that surrounds the museum. Covering an area of some 22 acres, the trails include well-marked routes over wetlands and sand dunes, with options to choose easy routes of just a half mile to longer two-mile sections. There's also a nice little butterfly garden that's worth a visit.

Golfing is one of the most popular things to do in the Cocoa Beach area, and the county offers dozens of top-notch courses. Each is characterized by natural beauty, with grassy dunes, crystal-clear waters, bright sunshine, and challenging holes.

At Baytree National Golf Links , for example, you'll have to navigate through mounds and moguls and uneven lies, as well as 74 white-sand bunkers, and water hazards galore.

At Viera East Golf Club , the 527-yard, Par 5, #14 sure is a challenge, as it requires an approach shot over water to an island green. The Savannahs At Merritt Island requires some deft navigation, too, with water hazards on 14 of the 18 holes.

If you want to get up close and personal with manatees, Florida's beloved "sea cows," consider a kayaking trip.

You'll find that these cartoon-like, bulbous creatures will swim right up to you, as they have no fear of humans. In addition to the manatees, you're likely to see bottlenose dolphins, colorful migratory birds, and other wildlife in the Central Florida ecosystem.

Cocoa Beach Kayaking will take you out to see these wonderful 2,000-pound creatures on a guided kayak tour through the beautiful Thousand Islands or the Indian River Lagoon.

If you've never kayaked before, don't worry, they will give you a quick lesson before you embark, and guides will be right alongside you or in your craft the entire time. You don't need to bring any gear, either. All you have to do is show up with your camera, and they'll do the rest.

You can't really say you've been to Cocoa Beach until you visit this legendary landmark. The Cocoa Beach Pier is an honest-to-goodness, old-fashioned, woodsy structure that's right out of the history books and where you can walk over water for some 800 yards. Along the way, you'll pass funky restaurants, gift shops with unique items and souvenirs, and great local bands performing outside.

There are also beach volleyball courts nearby and, in the waters around the pier, some of the best fishing in the United States. There are fishing-equipment rentals and beach rentals for whatever the family might need. It's also popular for its surfing, a fact that's led to the area being called the "East Coast Surfing Capital."

Sunrises over the ocean are spectacular here, and the rainbow of brilliant colors changes virtually every minute. There's also an arcade for the younger set and soothing ocean breezes for everyone.

Twister Airboat Rides , deep in the interior at Lone Cabbage Fish Camp, will whiz you along the Saint John's River and Lake Poinsett. You'll have an intimate look at an ecosystem and its hundreds of plant and animal species that most people see only from afar.

Your boat captain will slow down when he spots wildlife, so you can see it and take pictures. You'll most likely see some American alligators, bald eagles, and wading birds, perhaps even rarer species such as wild hogs.

Twister Airboat offers a number of different tour lengths of experiences, including 30- and 60-minute offerings. But when it's over, you'll have had so much fun you might not want to get off the boat.

When in Cocoa Beach, you're actually sitting near one of the greatest fishing grounds on the planet, and it would be a shame to let all that ocean bounty go to waste. Cocoa Beach has many great fishing-charter outfits, any of which will know where the best fishing is on any given day.

One of the most popular charter companies is Fin and Fly Fishing Charters , which specializes in sport fishing for redfish, snook, tarpon, black drum, and speckled sea trout. The fish are simply huge in these waters, and your crew will provide all the equipment you need to catch your share.

The original flagship Ron Jon's consists of 52,000 square feet of watersports goodies, and wandering its well-stocked aisles and departments will certainly get you in the mood to hit the water.

Also of interest is the Florida Surf Museum located within the store. When it's time to hit the water, the Ron Jon Watersports rental shop is right next door. So, too, are those big ocean waves, which can be accessed through Alan Shepard Park.

For a great getaway while you're already on vacation, consider a high-seas jaunt into the azure-blue waters of this region, with cruises starting at three days to The Bahamas and some longer ones to the Caribbean.

On the Disney Dream and Disney Wonder , you'll get to explore the many colorful islands of the Bahamas, which include stops at the historic capital city of Nassau, where you'll want to hit the Straw Market for wonderful handicrafts to bring back home; the sublime out-island of Castaway Cay, and the totally-different vibe of Freeport. Of course, on a Disney cruise, the cast of characters will all be there, including Mickey and Minnie, Goofy, Pluto, Donald, and the rest of the gang.

Carnival Cruise Lines also leaves from Port Canaveral, with stops including the Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos, and Royal Caribbean also plies the islands of the Bahamas.

While in Canaveral, be sure to make a beeline for the Exploration Tower . Thanks to its distinctive design which resembles the billowing sails of a vessel at sea, this attractive building certainly stands out from its pleasant parklike setting. Standing seven stories tall and within easy reach of the port, the tower is one of the area's newest, and most popular, attractions.

Highlights include interactive exhibits showcasing the area's diverse wildlife, the indigenous peoples who lived here, the first settlers from Europe, as well as the environment. Also, be sure to linger at the fascinating exhibit relating to the history of Port Canaveral, including a fun game that allows you to practice steering a ship.

The top two floors of the tower include observation decks (one indoor, one outdoor), offering panoramic views toward the Kennedy Space Center and over the bustling port. A café and souvenir shop are located on the premises, as well as a small movie theater.

From here, you can also join a tour of the nearby Cape Canaveral Light. Built in 1868, this historic lighthouse stands 151 feet tall and offers a fascinating insight into the workings of these once-important structures.

Author's Note: Ample free parking is provided, so be sure to spend additional time exploring the lovely park-like grounds surrounding the tower. From here you'll also get some great views of the docked cruise ships. You may also be lucky enough to get to watch some of these impressive vessels come and go. Home to more than 2000 Wizard of Oz artifacts, this large collection of memorabilia covers all aspects of what's undeniably one of the world's best-known stories of all time. In addition to original film props and marketing materials, you'll find fascinating facts related to the book, The wonderful Wizard of Oz , written by L. Frank Baum in 1900.

The highlight of your visit will undoubtedly be the museum's immersive experience where, thanks to modern projection technologies, you'll find yourself literally walking the famous yellow brick road with your friends and family. Next, there is the Behind The Gates Mission Zone.

Tours of the area are usually conducted by the Kennedy Space Center Bus Tour when it’s available.

You’ll see the Vehicle Assembly Building, which is working to support a Space Launch System, as well as Launch Pads 39A and 39B.

The Mission Zone beyond that is Race To The Moon, which details the events leading up to the moon landing in the space race.

The central attraction here is the Apollo/Saturn V Center, where you can see the Saturn V, the biggest rocket to ever take flight.

It also has numerous other interactive and hands-on exhibits.

Don’t forget to check out the Moon Tree Garden, Astrovan and Umbilical Tower, and The People’s Moon in this zone.

Next, head to the Space Shuttle Atlantis Zone.

It’s dedicated to NASA’s space shuttle program.

You can view the Space Shuttle Atlantis and the Hubble Space Telescope Theater up close in all their glory.

This zone also has a ton of cool experiences!

Experience re-entry at Fiery Ride Home, launches at Shuttle Launch Experience, microgravity at ISS Triumph of Technology, and various Astronaut Training Simulators.

The zone also has a Forever Remembered memorial for fallen astronauts and a huge 9 ton Kugel ball with 88 constellations.

Finally, there’s the last Mission Zone: NASA Now + Next.

Crammed onto the narrow neck of Cape Canaveral, Cocoa Beach is a world-famous beach city. With the ocean on one side and the Banana River lagoon on the other, it’s an emblem of the Space Coast, and somewhere I think everyone should see at least once.

Cocoa Beach is the spiritual home of surfing on the East Coast, and is the place where 11-time world champion Kelly Slater grew up and continues to live. 

The world’s largest surf store, Ron Jon Surf Shop, can be found here, next to the road entrance to the city along the Cocoa Beach Causeway.

On the lagoon side is the wildlife-rich Banana River, containing the Thousand Islands Conservation Area. Accessible on eco tours and kayak trips, this environment abounds with dolphins, manatees, and birdlife, including thousands of pelicans.

1. Cocoa Beach Pier

Announced by an iconic sign, Cocoa Beach’s most famous landmark was completed in 1962 and pushes into the ocean for more than 800 feet.

Helping to generate some of the best surfing waves on the East Coast, the pier quickly became the anchor for Cocoa Beach’s surf culture. 

This is a complete day out, with gift shops, life entertainment, five restaurants, four bars, volleyball courts on the shore, and the Cocoa Beach Surf School offering lessons every day. 

At the very end of the pier is the famous Rikki Tiki Tavern. No question that this tiki bar is a popular spot, but it’s worth braving the crowds for the breathtaking views all along the Space Coast.

2. Banana River Aquatic Preserve

This 30,000-acre preserve is on the inward, lagoon side of Cocoa Beach, between Cape Canaveral and Merritt Island. Part of the famously biodiverse Indian River Lagoon, the Banana River has the distinction of not being part of the Intracoastal Waterway.

It’s an extraordinary environment, composed of tidal flats, mangroves, salt marshes, oyster bars, seagrass beds, and the maze-like Thousand Islands network. I think it’s safe to say that wildlife is profuse here. 

There are manatees all year, as well as a huge population of diamondback terrapin turtles, and the largest pelican rookery on the Atlantic Coast. 

The only way to experience the preserve is on the water, ideally with a guided tour. A few local operators are Cocoa Kayaking, Fin Expeditions, and Florida Adventurer. Join a bioluminescence tour at night for something unforgettable.

3. Lori Wilson Park

Backed by a spectacular maritime hammock, the county-managed Lori Wilson Park is a bit more natural than some of the area’s other beach parks. 

This is one of a few things that makes it so special for me. For those escaping the touristy spots, the beach itself is just what the doctor ordered. 

Amenities include picnic tables, five pavilions, 1,000-feet of elevated boardwalk, a playground, and six dune crossovers with wonderful vistas. For people with pups in tow, there’s an off-leash dog park on the south side.

4. Alan Shepard Beachfront Park

The city’s most convenient beach access is at the end of E Cocoa Beach Causeway. Setting foot on the beach, you’ll be wowed by the massive sweep of sand and the rolling surf.

There’s plentiful parking with 300+ spaces, as well as a bathhouse, ten large pavilions, covered picnic tables, grills, and a playground for wee ones. 

Alan Shepard Beachfront Park is named for the astronaut. He was the second man in space in 1961, and the fifth and oldest man (aged 47) to walk on the moon in 1971. 

Appropriately, this is probably the best public place in Cocoa Beach to watch rocket launches at the Kennedy Space Center, about 15 miles to the north. Check the calendar for upcoming SpaceX launches.

5. Ron Jon Surf Shop

The flagship store for an international brand, the Cocoa Beach Ron Jon Surf Shop opened in 1963. With several expansions since then, this is officially the world’s largest surf store, at 52,000+ square feet.

Essentially, it’s a total lifestyle center, with everything from surfboards to apparel, paddleboards, skateboards, and all manner of cute souvenirs.

There’s even a museum space, and I’d recommend giving this a few minutes of your time. Exhibits here chart the history of surfing in Cocoa Beach, and profile surfing personalities like the 11-time world champion Kelly Slater, who hails from this city.

6. The Dinosaur Store

Opened in 1996, the Dinosaur Store is a must for parents with dino-obsessed kids like mine. Initially just a shop, this private business has unveiled several museum areas over time. 

The big one is the Museum of Dinosaurs and Ancient Cultures, which opened on the second and third floors in 2017. 

This 20,000-square-foot attraction presents fossils and artifacts from all ends of the earth. The Hall of Dinosaurs is a treat, with its imposing cast skeletons and fossils from numerous eras, as well as impressive minerals and Paleolithic tools.

On the third floor you can peruse a collection of some 40 artifacts from Pre-Columbian Central America, as well as a number of Chinese Terracotta Warriors.

7. Robert P. Murkshe Memorial Park

In the south of the city, there’s an excellent public beach access, by the Welcome to Cocoa Beach sign. 

Robert P. Murkshe Memorial Park has a relaxing natural feel, underpinned by the dune crossovers. These lead you through a tunnel of vegetation and emerge on a perfect white sandy beach.

Among the amenities at this two-acre park are showers, and a small pavilion with a grill. The beach itself is ideal for surf fishing, and tends to be less crowded than the options further north.

8. The Wizard of Oz Museum

Universally adored, this one-of-a-kind museum is a celebration of the classic 1939 movie, The Wizard of Oz.

Opened in 2021, The Wizard of Oz Museum is the labor of love of a passionate fan of the books and film. 

There are two distinct aspects to the attraction. First you’ve got an astonishing memorabilia collection, with more than 2,000 items. 

These include many props, and help to tell the story of one of the Golden Age of Hollywood’s most interesting productions. 

But what blew me away was the immersive experience. These use projectors and original artworks to bring elements from the movie and books to life.

9. Golf N Gator

As the name tells you, this local attraction combines miniature golf with alligator experiences. Golf N Gator has two 18-hole courses, at Gator Mountain and the Swamp Cave. 

Both courses wind their way through subtropical landscaping, with lush vegetation, streams and waterfalls. On your round you’ll also cross bridges, with fish, turtles and alligators, which injected a sense of adventure to my game.

There are some 30 alligators at Golf N Gator, and you can see them wallowing in the water or sunning themselves. If you’re brave, you can take part in the gator experience, and will get to hold a baby alligator.

Finally, there’s a treasure hunting area, where kids can hunt for sharks’ teeth, fossils, interesting stones and arrowheads.

10. Cocoa Beach Dolphin Tours

If you want to discover the wildlife of the Banana River in a more sedate way, you’ll have a few options. My recommendation is Cocoa Beach Dolphin Tours, found on the lagoon by the Cocoa Beach Causeway.

With more than 20 years of experience, Cocoa Beach Dolphin Tours offers several tours a day through the magnificent habitats of the Thousand Islands. 

You’re sure to see manatees, dolphins, and will get a privileged glimpse of the pelican rookery here. Trips take place on a comfortable 50-seat pontoon boat. There’s a qualified naturalist on every tour, and a USCG licensed captain at the helm.

11. Jetty Park Beach and Pier

A short drive up the cape and you’ll come to one of the most dramatic pieces of shoreline around. Jetty Park features a campground, stretch of beachfront, and 1,200-foot paved and lighted fishing pier.

This is all next to the entrance of Port Canaveral’s various cruise terminals. So you’ll get the chance to witness the largest cruise ships in the world passing by.

This is also the closest public beach to the Kennedy Space Center, and an excellent vantage point for launches. Even closer is Canaveral Space Force Station, which also stages regular launches.

12. Cocoa Beach Skate Park

A skateboarding mecca, this facility by Cocoa Beach High School is no ordinary skatepark. Apt for a city renowned for board sports, Cocoa Beach Skate Park is like a work of art. 

Designed by renowned designers, Team Pain, this has an awesome bowl section, and a street course to match. The surface is as smooth as can be, and there’s lighting for skating until as late as 10:00 pm on weekends.

Every Wednesday evening there’s a Best Trick Contest, with music, raffles, skateboarding news, and a Grind For Life booth.

13. Ron Jon Surf School

If you or your loved ones are hoping to tame Cocoa Beach’s waves, there’s a slew of companies ready to help you out. 

The longest running in all of Florida is Ron Jon Surf School, which opened in 1993. The school’s CPR/BLS-certified instructors include some of the most accomplished surfers from around the country.

Offering one-on-one or group tuition, many have dozens of years of surfing experience, and are therefore able to teach everyone from beginners to advanced surfers.

Lessons are offered both privately and in small groups. For kids from seven to 18, there are multi-day camps during the school summer break.

14. Historic Cocoa Village

Cocoa Beach is ten miles east of one of Florida’s prettiest downtown areas. If you’re getting to Cocoa Beach along the Hubert Humphrey Causeway, I think you have to make a stop in Cocoa Village. 

These streets were platted more than 150 years ago. Poking around, you’ll come across several historic homes, as well as a sophisticated array of shops and restaurants. There’s also a packed schedule of events and festivals, many set at the beautiful Cocoa Riverfront Park. 

The village’s shaded streets are perfect for those looking to stretch their legs. You can take part in sip-and-stroll tours enjoying an adult beverage or two on a guided tour. 

Cocoa Village also buzzes with live entertainment, so be sure to see what’s happening at the Cocoa Village Playhouse.

15. Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex

Since the early days of space exploration, the area around Cape Canaveral has been its epicenter.

You can get to the mind-blowing Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex in 20 minutes from Cocoa Beach. What you’ll see on tours or self-guided experiences are pieces of space exploration heritage that can’t be seen anywhere else on earth.

If you have just a day, there’s a few unmissable things I think everyone should experience. These include, Space Shuttle Atlantis, the interactive Journey to Mars, the Apollo/Saturn V bus tour, the Astronaut Hall of Fame, and Gateway: The Deep Space Launch Complex.

Cocoa Beach, Florida is located on the central eastern coast of Florida. The city is south of Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. There is a population of over 11,000 and although it’s small, don’t think the city won’t be filled with vacationers interested in relaxing on the beach.

The nearest airport is Melbourne , which is about 15 miles away, but the Orlando airports can be useful as well although they are about 50 miles away.

The weather in Cocoa Beach can vary between hot and cool, but even in the winter months the water averages to be in the 70s which is still perfect to swim in. Listed below are 23 best things to do around Cocoa Beach, FL.

Beaches and parks, bake in the sun at playalinda beach.

Playalinda Beach is located in the Canaveral National Seashore. The shoreline is 24 miles with crystal blue water all throughout.

Throughout the beach you may spot wildlife such as birds, dolphins, and sea turtles. Playalinda beach is also a great place to see rockets as they launch since it surrounds Kennedy Space Center.  The beach is a great place to go surfing, take walks on the sand or enjoy a picnic at the picnic tables on the boardwalks.

There is a $20 vehicle fee to get into the beach, but only a $10 fee to go in if walking or biking into the establishment. Boardwalks are the only way to get onto the beach and each has a ramp so they are wheelchair accessible.

Enjoy time with family at Lori Wilson Park

Lori Wilson Park is 32.43 acres of beach that is perfect for family get togethers.

On the north side of  the beach are grills for families to cook up a perfect lunch or dinner and picnic tables on the south side to enjoy the food.

There is also a playground for the kids to run and climb around. Also located on the south side is a dog park where owners can take their dogs off their leashes and let them run around. Some other things you can do throughout your time on the beach include safely swimming with lifeguards at bay, surfing, playing volleyball in the public courts or taking a nature walk along the shore.

Gaze into space at Alan Shepard Park

Alan Shepard Park is located on the east end of State Road 520. The beach is named after Alan Shepard,  the astronaut who was the first American to travel into space.

The park is 5 acres and is perfect to see rocket launches or looking into space through your own telescope. Make sure to catch some waves through surfing or swimming.

Throughout the beach are restrooms, showers, pavilions, grills, picnic tables and playgrounds. The beach is within walking distance to the pier where there are plenty of retail shops and restaurants. There are more than 300 parking spots available at $15 or $2.50 per hour.

Enjoy the view at Manatee Sanctuary Park

Manatee Sanctuary Park is the flagship park for Cape Canaveral. The park is 10 acres and is located on the Banana River.

The park is able to host private events, but you could also come just to relax and enjoy the view. There is a half mile trail and exercise stations if you would like to enjoy an outdoor exercise or you could walk the boardwalk.

There is also a pavilion to sit under and a place to play a few rounds of horseshoe with friends and family. If you want to sit and look out at the water, be on the lookout for manatees, osprey, dolphins, and fish. A great place to go kayaking with manatees in Florida .

Walk along the cocoa beach pier.

The Cocoa Beach Pier is a historic landmark on Florida’s Space Coast that expands 800 feet over the Atlantic Ocean. Along the pier are tons of  restaurants, shops, resorts and live entertainment. On the pier you can rent surfing gear to step off into the beach and surf along the Atlantic Ocean.

Some of the best surfing takes place by the Cocoa Beach Pier. The Pier Shop is a great place to shop for homemade items and souvenirs to take home and remember all the memories of Cocoa Beach.

There’s also an area on the pier where you can bring or rent fishing equipment and fish. This part of the pier costs $5. There is something for everyone to enjoy.

Ron Jon Surf Shop is the largest surf shop in the world. The shop is 52,000 square feet and has everything for beach life. Ron Jon has been open for over 50 years and along with selling clothes, souvenirs, and beach supplies you can rent surfing gear, beach bikes and paddleboards.

Don’t forget to pick up your own “One of a Kind” Ron Jon t-shirt before you leave. You can find everything that you may need for the beach at Ron Jon’s.

Walk around Cocoa Village, located on Main Street,  to shop and learn about the history of Cocoa Beach. Here you can even see S.F. Travis Hardware store which opened in 1885 and is still opened today. The town became the shopping district that we know and love in 1985.

The village has shops, restaurants, and music for all to enjoy. Sit down at a fine dining restaurant for date night or go out shopping with some friends and end the night with a casual dinner. It is a great place for all visitors of Cocoa Beach to gather.

Rikki Tiki Tavern is a cocktail lounge on a pier that offers a full bar and tropical drinks. It is at the end of the 800 foot pier and is directly over the water. Watch as the waves crash onto the legs of the pier while sipping on a tropical drink.

The lounge offers limited food options, but is a perfect spot to sit in the shade and take a break from the water. Rikki Tiki Tavern can sit around 100 people with their table and bar seating. The lounge is in its own section on the pier with nothing directly next to it.

Climb around at cocoa beach aerial adventures.

Cocoa Beach Aerial Adventures has been listed in USA Today’s 10 Best Aerial Adventure Courses since 2019. The establishment has seven trails for participants to try out that are categorized by three levels of difficulty. To get through the courses participants are held up by 45 feet poles while going through up to 49 challenges.

Going through the park you can go at whatever pace is comfortable to you. There is also a new zipdrop for anyone that is interested in trying.

This involves climbing up to the treehouse, going over the guard rail and taking a step off to drop down. Everyone of any age is welcome to try the adventures and challenges given. Reserving a time online is available.

Climb the Exploration Tower

The Exploration Tower is a part of Port Canaveral. The tower opened on November 4, 2013 and provides an experience that is oriented towards families.

From the tower you can see rockets launch and cruise ships come into the port on the seventh floor which is the observation floor. The first floor is where the gift shop is located, don’t forget to grab a souvenir. The tower has seven floors of exhibits with interactive play that is geared towards being fun and educational.

The tower has an inside and outside observation deck, an auditorium, cafe, gift shop and 5500 feet of exhibition. Hosting events is also possible at this establishment.

Explore Space at Kennedy Space Center

Kennedy Space Center is not on Cocoa Beach, but it is near. The center is located in Central Florida and there are directions listed on their website.

This is the perfect place to go when rockets launch as the center is only 6.7 miles away from the launchpad and can be seen once clearing the tree line. The park is organized with mission zones so attractions can be explored in chronological order.

You can explore current missions currently happening in space and past missions that have brought space exploration to what it is today. The attractions include: Heroes & Legends, Behind the Gates, Race to the Moon, Shuttle: A Ship Like No Other and Nasa Now and Next.

Throughout the park are many restaurants to try throughout the day. Vegetarian and gluten free choices are available at each one. Everything is also biodegradable and plastic free. Don’t forget to stop at the Space Shop, “world’s largest space shop,” to pick up a souvenir before you go.

Enjoy the view on a Cocoa Beach Helicopter Tour

Go on a helicopter tour throughout beautiful Cocoa Beach. Cocoa Beach Helicopters has been offering aerial sightseeing services since 2010 and has given tours to over 7,500 customers.

Their pilots have thousands of flight hours and their chief pilot has been working with aircrafts for over 30 years. There are six tours for you to choose from ranging from $20-$300. On the tours you can watch cruise ships, sharks, stingrays, the pier, surfers and more.

Some upgrades also offered include: no doors, sunset and two different video packages.  Up to three passengers can be brought up in the helicopter to enjoy the ride. Reservations can be made online or by phone.

Learn to kiteboard with 321 Kiteboarding and Watersports

321 Kiteboarding and Watersports is a three in one shop. The shop offers rentals and sells equipment, but also does repairs and gives lessons on how to kiteboard. The kites are specifically made for beginners during lessons to keep everyone safe.

The shop also emphasizes how the water will be low and warm which makes it easier for beginners to learn. The course is being offered for $39 although usually $225.

Wave riding lessons are also offered. If you already know how to kiteboard and just need the equipment that’s okay too because the shop has everything available to be rented. The store also sells apparel and electric longboards for purchase.

Cocoa Beach Kayaking will bring you on a kayaking tour through the Thousand Islands in Cocoa Beach. The tour would take place in the Indian River Lagoon which has the most biodiverse estuary in North America. There are over 4,500 plants and animals.

Along the tour you can learn about the Florida manatees, an endangered species, bottlenose dolphins, and migrating birds. No prior kayaking experience as directions are given on land before the tour and the pace will be slow and comfortable.

Each tour guide has hundreds of research hours on the topics mentioned to make sure all tours will be a fun and educational experience. The tour lasts from 1.5 to 2 hours and everything will be provided. All five years and up are welcome for $35 per person. Booking can be done online.

Glide on the water by Riding an Airboat

Riding on the water is possible with an airboat. On an airboat you can sit and look at the view while gliding around the water. On the ride you might spot gators, fish, cows, birds and more. Instigator Airboat rides can take up to ten people for an hour in the captain’s boat.

They offer headsets so everyone will be able to hear what is happening throughout the tour and ask questions. They state that words cannot do justice to the experience. The trip takes place on the St. John’s River. The one hour ride can be offered from $60-$350. Booking can be done over the phone.

Look for fossils at The Dinosaur Store & Museum

The Dinosaur Museum shows off real life fossils and skeletons from around the world. There are 80 species displayed in the museum. 5000 years of history is shown in the museum and educational information on King Tut and Emperor Qin.

There are artifacts from Egypt, Mesoamerica, and South America, China and Tribal America. There is also an adventure zone with an arcade, science stations, movie cave and reptile run with real baby alligators. A gift shop is available with fossils, minerals, meteorites, jewelry and more.The online store is also open with fossils available for sale. You must buy your ticket for the museum in the giftshop to be used for the same day as purchase. Tickets range from $10-$14.

Skate around at Cocoa Beach Skatepark

Got a skateboard? Come skate around at the Cocoa Beach Skatepark. If you don’t and you’re still interested don’t worry, many shops around the beach sell and rent boards to customers throughout the day.

The park is open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday, 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturdays and 9 a.m to 9 p.m. on Sundays.

All 18 and under must wear a helmet. Skaters of all levels are to be respected. No bmx, vaping, smoking, alcohol or graffiti allowed. All users should be aware of risks in skating as there is no attendant watching.

Watch a show at Surfside Playhouse

Surfside Playhouse is a community non profit theatre in Cocoa Beach. The program is dedicated to the performing arts and shows this through putting on productions and presentations, educating and reaching out to the community.

Surfside offers a children’s theatre group, an annual playwriting contest, three productions per season and a snack bar.

Tickets can be purchased online along with season passes. Improv classes are also offered at the theatre for adults and highschool students. The theatre can also be rented out for movie screenings, receptions, meetings, recitals and parties. If you’ve got a big group your vacation party could be there.

Try an escape room at Escape Cocoa Beach

Escape Cocoa Beach has four escape rooms that must be completed within an hour. In the rooms you will be able to solve puzzles, crack codes, find hidden items and more to exit the room. The rooms are for ages eight and up, but younger children are allowed in as well.

Most rooms are family friendly so everyone can enjoy the experience. Solving puzzles is a great way to bond with family and friends as you try to beat the timer.

Escape Cocoa Beach is a part of the popular Cocoa Beach nightlife and is a great activity for if it rains. The rates of difficulty range from 3.5-4.5/5. It costs $32 per person, but group rates have a discounted price.

If lucky enough to visit during  Christmas time  you can watch surfing Santa’s. Best of all it is less than an hour drive east of Orlando. It is located on the gorgeous Space Coast of Florida.

Stroll along the 800 foot Cocoa Beach Pier. Visitors can wander through the largest surf shop in the world, and explore the Florida Surf Museum. The Pier offers visitor one of the best free things to do in Cocoa Beach. From restaurants, to bars, too shopping and fishing this is a destination right on the beach.

For those looking for things to do in Cocoa Beach at night, the pier is the perfect spot to head to have a cocktail and watch the sunset.  The restaurants along the pier offer up happy hours with amazing sunset views of the Atlantic Ocean while live music is performed. We highly recommend heading to the pier at night for one of the best things to do in Cocoa Beach for adults.

The Dino Store

The Dino Store is one of the attractions in Cocoa Beach Florida perfect for families. It features the museum of Dinosaur and Ancient cultures as well as the storefront and adventure zone.

You can choose to visit just the museum, the adventure zone or buy a combo pass of both for $24 adults and $20 children. Open Monday, Wednesday to Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm and Sunday 12pm to 5 pm.

A visit here takes you back in time where the museum showcases hundreds of authentic dinosaur fossils and artifacts from around the world. Explore the hall of Dinosaurs, the mineral cave, the dawn of man and the terror bird exhibit.

While the adventure zone is hands on arcade game style, slides and live animals. There is even a nile raft ride carnival style boat ride.

Ron Jon Surf Shop

One of the fun things to do in Cocoa Beach, is to head to the Ron Jon Surf Shop the largest surf shop in the world. For the past 60 years, this flagship store has been the destination for anything surf related you could want!

Make sure to stop in and get a famous Ron Jon Surf Shop teeshirt. The store is open daily from 9 am to 11 am and even offers a free parking lot while you shop. Not only do they have everything for surfing, but they also have everything needed for a beach vacation, skating, Christmas ornaments and more.

If you are new to surfing in Florida , Cocoa beach is one of the most loved Florida surfing spots. As well as being a great place for beginners it’s also home to 11-times World Surf League #1 pro, Kelly Slater.

Surfing is one of the best Cocoa Beach activities! So come enjoy the surfing capital of the southeast. Beginners are welcomed with warm water and small waves making it the perfect spot for a lesson. While at the same time experienced long boarders love the long breaks near the pier.

If you are lucky enough to be visiting during Christmas time you will be in town for Surfing Santas. Started in 2009, it has evolved into a local phenomenon with over 800 Santas and 10,000 spectators in attendance to watch all those who dress up as Santa and going surfing !

Bioluminescent kayaking

For the best views for bioluminescent kayaking , you’re going to want to head to the the Banana River Aquatic Preserve. Flanked on both sides by nothing but roads with no major development makes it the perfect place to see the bioluminescence.

There are a lot of incredible tours that will guide you through bioluminescent kayaking in Florida, if you do not want to go on your own.

The best time to go is from the middle of May through the summer until early October. It is thought by scientists that you will see the most activity five days after the full moon of the month.

Exploration Tower

Exploration Tower gets are vote as the best activities in Cocoa Beach for those looking for both something fun and educational. Just 12 minutes north in Cape Canaveral, you can explore observations decks, explore exhibits, and interactive activities.

On the 7 floors you will find a cafe and shop on floor 1, sculptures of marine life made from 100% recycled material as well as early European settlers on floor 2. Floor 3 is where you can learn about the history of the area that transformed it into a harbor as well as a theater.

Floor 5 explains how mega ships pass through port Canaveral and showcase the submarines from the navy port. If you want to see Kennedy Space center head to floor 6 for exhibits on rockets and space. The observation deck is located on floor 7.

Thousand Islands

Are you looking for unique things to do in Cocoa Beach for couples? If so, head out to 1000 Islands Conservation area. This area is made up of islands in the Banana River Lagoon and is the perfect place to kayak.

Explore the over 900 acres of mangroves and salt marshes that were formed in the 1950’s when small ditches were dug thought the islands for water movement and later a storm broke through leaving a flooded tide delta.

As you kayak through the mangrove tunnels you can see a variety of wildlife, birds and fish. We consider this to be one of the hidden treasures in the Cocoa Beach area.

Lori Wilson is one of 4 major parks in the Cocoa Beach area. If you are looking for places to visit in Cocoa Beach Florida head to Lori Wilson Park. One of the nicest beaches in Florida is found at Lori Wilson Park with sand dunes and costal preserves.

It also features a 3000 feet nature trail boardwalk through the 30 acer Maritime Hammock Preserve. There are picnic tables, shower, bbq grills, volleyball courts, restroom facilities, a dog park and parking and admission is free! The park is open daily from 7 am to 7 pm.

Kennedy Space Center

The Kennedy Space Center is one of ten National Aeronautics and Space Administration field centers. Located in Merritt Island just 25 minutes away this is one of the things to do near Cocoa Beach! It is a must visit on any bucket list of things to do in Florida!

At the space center, you can meet an astronaut, see the Space Shuttle Atlantis. Or go through the U.S. astronaut hall of fame, visit the rocket garden and watch the launches of space shuttle. For those looking for something casual to do, head to Main Street to explore the historic Cocoa Beach village. You will find shops, restaurants, and a town square. Since the 1800’s it has been the cultural hub of Cocoa Beach and a destination in of its own.

As you stroll along the tree-lines streets you can shop at local boutiques, dine at one of the many restaurants, or watch a play a the Village playhouse.

Go Manatee Sighting

Cocoa Beach Florida is the perfect place to go manatee sighting. This area of Florida is known for eco-tourism and educational tours to see manatees, dolphins and more. Many of the tour operators, offer day time tours, or a more romantic sunset tour perfect for a date night.

On the Space Coast, 1000 islands is home to the West Indian Manatee (also known as the Florida Manatee). They love to hang out in the mangroves along the coast line. The best time to see the manatees is April 1 to November 15.

Florida Surf Museum

Founded in 1999, the Florida Surf Museum is tasked with preserving the history of Florida’s surfing. A visit here will allow you to explore exhibits, research and preservation via memorabilia and historical videos.

The museum hosts a variety of exhibits from around the state of Florida and how surfing has transformed over the decades. Listen to the surfing legends captured over time, or attend one of the events hosted by the surf museum. The suggested donation for admission is $2 per person. Best of all it is located inside the Ron Jon Surf Shop complex.

Helen & Allan Cruickshank Sanctuary

Located on the Space Coast about 30 minutes from Cocoa Beach, it is one of the things to do in Cocoa Beach for those looking for birding. This 140 acer diverse sanctuary, is open daily . Named after its founders who came to Florida in 1937, the flora, fauna and birds here are unrivaled.

The Florida scrub forest creates a unique habitat for birds not found elsewhere in Florida. There are trails for hiking, offering educational information along the trail. Walk from the scrub forest to the wetland.

Best of all there is no fee for entry or for parking. Keep an eye out for a variety of birds, turtles, duck and fish.

Coconuts on the Beach

Coconut on the Beach is one of the restaurants on Cocoa Beach . You will be greeted by the large tiki man outside this beach bar that offers live music, cocktails and food overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. It is also super family friendly and you can often spot porpoises playing just off shore!

Although the menu is focused on seafood there is something for everyone. Try one of the speciality entrees such as the fresh catch of the day, shrimp and grits, fried shrimp, reef tacos, or chef’s house steak and lobster Mac and cheese.

Ultimate Cocoa Beach Florida Vacation Guide & Attractions

Considering a Cocoa Beach Florida vacation? It is definitely one of the best places in the Sunshine State for a getaway. The Cocoa Beach area has a more small-town vibe than other nearby beaches.

I did write an article about this fun town a few years ago but it was time for an update. So here you go!

A short drive from Orlando, Disney, and Universal Studio. Cocoa Beach is about hour’s drive east of Orlando which gives you easy access from nearby Orlando Airports.

The beach is known for its warm weather, soft white sand, and crystal clear waters. It’s also home to the Kennedy Space Center, Canaveral National Seashore, and Port Canaveral which offers miles of undeveloped coastline and pristine beaches.

Cocoa Beach is a fantastic place for those who surf. Or those who want to learn. Enjoy a surf lesson, then browse the many surf shops for your new water activity. The iconic Ron Jon Surf Shop is located within walking distance of the beach.

The world’s largest surf shop is a popular choice not only for surfers but the entire family. Yes, they have surfboards, but they also have clothing and swimwear for the entire family as well as home decor, toys, shoes, and more.

History buff? You, too, will love Cocoa Beach and its many historic sites. Historic downtown Cocoa Beach was the place to visit in the 50s and 60s.

Today you can enjoy great shopping, restaurants, and antique stores as you enjoy a short walk down the tree-lined streets. Just one of many reasons Cocoa Beach is one of my favorite destinations.

Exploring Cocoa Beach

There are so many things to see and do in Cocoa Beach. From nature preserves to museums to fantastic resorts, it’s a great choice not only for a family vacation but a romantic getaway.

Canaveral National Seashore

This portion of the state is actually the largest undeveloped Atlantic Coastline in Florida. Beautiful barrier island with plenty to explore.

Dune, hammock, and lagoon habitats provide homes to many animals including sea turtles, manatees, dolphins, and birds use the estuary as their source for food, shelter, breeding, and nesting shorebirds.

Cape Canaveral.

The last time I visited, I took my mom to the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, and she had a great time. You can actually see the rocket launches from several areas of the city and beach.

We were able to see the actual Space Shuttle Atlantis, the launch pads for SpaceX, and learned about space exploration and the history of Port Canaveral.

Merritt Island

In addition to serving as a home for NASA’s Kennedy Space Center, this island is also home to a 140,000-acre nature sanctuary, Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge.

Coastal dunes, saltwater marshes, managed impoundment, scrub, pine flatwoods, and hardwood hammocks provide homes for 1,500 species of plants, animals and seabirds some of which are endangered.

When we visited and were touring the island, we were able to see the bald eagles. The nest way up in the tree, was easily visible by the eye.

Hike a nature trail in the refuge or bike one of the longer trails. Prefer to kayak? You can that also in the refuge.

This is considered an easy paddle, but portions are tidal. The upper Indian River Lagoon also offers  bioluminescence trips . A kayaking tour may be best to help you navigate including some areas with shallow waters.

Historic Cocoa Village

A trip to the historic Cocoa Village will take you back in time! With its charming streets, century-old buildings, and unique shops. Truly a special place is an essential stop for history buffs and those who appreciate historic homes and buildings.

Ron Jon Surf Shop

This is such a cool store to explore and the perfect place not only for those who surf but those of us who love the beach.

It’s one of my must stop shops when I see one whether it’s this one in Cocoa Beach or another one such as Panama City Beach. The largest surf shop with over 52,000 square feet to explore. T-shirts, surfboards, and free parking!

Exploration Tower

Located at Port Canaveral, this is one spot you need to be sure to visit. (The tower is currently closed with estimated reopening in Spring 2023.)

The tower has 7 floors waiting for you to explore. From the gift shop and restaurant on the first floor through floor seven with an outdoor observation deck, you will be able to see the beach and more of Brevard County.

Banana River Aquatic Preserve

This preserve is located in north central Brevard County. This preserve is one of the best places in Florida to kayak in bioluminescent waters.

Kayakers love this area but if you are not experienced or prefer not to venture out alone, you can opt for a kayak tour or tour guide. The best time to see the bioluminescence is May through October.

The preserve is also an important habitat for manatees, pelicans, alligators and diamondback terrapin turtles. The ideal place for nature lovers.

Dinosaur Store

Even if you don’t like dinosaurs, you will enjoy this stop. 20,000 square feet, the Museum of Dinosaurs and Ancient Cultures has hundreds of artifacts and fossils from around the world.

In addition to the museum, there is also a hands-on interactive exhibits Adventure Zone making this a great spot for the whole family to enjoy.

Westgate Cocoa Beach Pier

This historic Cocoa Beach landmark stretches over 800 feet into the Atlantic Ocean and is home to delicious local restaurants, bars, gift shops and live music.

You will also find volleyball courts, outdoor showers, and lifeguards on the beach. Be sure to stop in at Rikki Tiki Tavern and enjoy a beach cocktail while overlooking the water.

Perfect place to stop for happy hour after strolling down the Cocoa Beach boardwalk.

Liberty Bell Museum

Located in nearby Melbourne, is the Liberty Bell Museum. The museum is free but be sure to call first as often it is not open.

Cocoa Beach Beaches

Lori wilson park.

Situated at the south end of Cocoa Beach, this beach has plenty of room to relax and enjoy.

Whether you’re looking for a place to sunbathe or take part in some fun activities such as volleyball, jet-skiing, or even skim-boarding, Lori Wilson Park is sure to provide an unforgettable experience.

The park also includes a nature center and two fishing piers that are perfect for those who want to get out on the water and catch some fish. 

A must-visit spot when visiting Cocoa Beach, the Canaveral National Seashore is a barrier island that offers miles of pristine, undeveloped beach. In addition to its stunning beauty, the national seashore also offers opportunities for bird-watching and other wildlife viewing. 

Cape Canaveral is home to an abundance of wildlife, including three native species of sea turtles: the loggerhead, the leatherback, and the green turtle. Cape Canaveral Air Force Station is located here as well with six launch towers and the original mission control. Super cool to see!

Alan Shepard Park Beach

For those looking for a more secluded beach experience, Shepard Park Beach is the perfect spot! With its quiet atmosphere and uncrowded shoreline, it’s easy to relax and unwind here.

There are also plenty of nearby restaurants and shops if you get hungry or want to do some shopping. The City of Cocoa Beach maintains this popular ocean-front park, and it’s a great place for families as well as nature lovers.

Playalinda Beach Florida

This beach   is also a great spot to check out if you’re looking for something a little different. Located on the space coast, this beach is known for its wildlife viewing opportunities, as well as its miles of undeveloped coastline.

Whether you want to relax and enjoy the views or participate in some outdoor activities like walking a nature trail, Playalinda Beach Florida has something for everyone! 

Robert P. Murkshe Memorial Park

Located near Cape Canaveral on Florida’s Space Coast this beautiful beach is located in a 7-acre park. It is very well known for its pristine coastline. White sandy beaches with plenty of activities and water sports to enjoy.

An easy day trip from Disney World, Universal Studios and other theme parks Orlando is known for. Get the kids away from the gift shops and let them explore the Atlantic Coast in this beautiful beach park.

Cherie Down Park

This park is another beautiful beach with plenty of things to do to keep the kids busy. It, too, is maintained by the city of Cocoa Beach.

Pavilions are available on a first-come basis. Picnic areas and a parking lot with free parking near the beach make it ADA-friendly as well.

Sidney Fisher Park

Located on the Atlantic Ocean side of the Sunshine State is Sidney Fisher Park. This 10-acre oceanfront park has picnic pavilions, picnic tables, showers, and restrooms as well as 200 parking spaces. There is a fee however for this parking lot of $15.

This historic beach pier was built in the early 60s and stretches 800 feet over the Atlantic Ocean. Be sure to visit the retail shops and local restaurants after you enjoy your walk on the pier.

There are also several hotels to choose from including chain hotels, pet-friendly vacation rentals, vacation homes on the beach, resorts to smaller beachside motels. 

For me, it’s all about being on the beach especially seeing a Florida spectacular sunrise. This quintessential beach town has it all.  I have provided information below to help you find your perfect vacation spot.

Where To Eat?

The beachside bars and grills are my favorites. I love to see the water. There are also some fantastic restaurants and more also on the pier as well.

Space Coast Office of Tourism Highlights Multi-Year Project at Lori Wilson Park in Cocoa Beach

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – The Space Coast Office of Tourism began a multi-year project in Lori Wilson Park in mid-2020 to refurbish many areas that needed refreshing and updating.

The 32-acre park in Cocoa Beach hosted over 800,000 visitors in 2022 alone with more than 80% from outside the county – many attending two popular events, P1 powerboat racing at Thunder on Cocoa Beach and the Cocoa Beach Air Show.

Two large funding sources a Tourism Development Council Capital Facilities grant ($2.76M) and use of the Beach fund ($1.25M) were authorized by the Brevard County Board of County Commissioners.

These refurbishments included replacing the seven crossovers and connectors with a composite material that will last 30+ years (a massive improvement over using wood), completely renovating the dog park (with new sod, fencing, benches, trees, and sprinkler system), replacing shower towers and both the North- and South-side bathroom facilities, and an overhaul to the hammock by removing invasive plants and completely rebuilding the boardwalk.

Back in the 1970’s, the land was being used as an unofficial landfill. Florida State Senator, former County Commissioner, and Cocoa Beach resident Lori Wilson recognized that cleaning the area could return it to the former natural glory.

She put together a matching funds plan with the county and state sharing in the purchase of the property and the trash was cleaned out by various Boys and Girls Clubs over several weeks.

The community unanimously decided to name the park after Wilson, who was also a major proponent of manatee protection laws, the Equal Rights Act, and the removal of paid toilets in public women’s restrooms.

Wilson was appointed by Gov. Claude Kirk to fill a vacancy on the Brevard County Commission in 1969 and was the first woman in the state to receive a gubernatorial appointment like this.

She then was elected to a full term in 1970 and elected Chair in 1972, the first woman to do so.

Later that year, she was the third woman elected to the Florida Senate and re-elected in 1974, serving until 1978. Wilson was an honorary director of the Central Florida Zoological Society and legislative director of the Florida Injured Wildlife Sanctuary.

Lori Wilson passed away in 2019 at the age of 81, but her legacy lives on.

Mansfield Maritime Hammock

The Lori Wilson Park Maritime Hammock was renamed the Mansfield Maritime Hammock in August 2022 to honor the inspiring efforts of Phyllis and Howard Mansfield, volunteers who worked to protect this habitat for the birds that call it home.

As long-time residents of Cocoa Beach, the Mansfields were deeply concerned about the health of the hammock, along with the dozens of types of migratory and native birds that visited the area, as it’s a part of the Great Florida Birding and Wildlife Trail.

They removed exotic plants and litter from the grounds, cleaned bird feeders, maintained a watering pond, communicated local conditions to bird watchers, and planted hundreds of native plants in the city. Phyllis Mansfield recounted how she and others had thwarted potential plans to build another road through the hammock.

She said, “This maritime hammock is a wonderful part of the greater Lori Wilson Park and I hope my friends – county residents, birders and volunteers – will all work to ensure this maritime hammock’s wildlife habitat will be restored by removing and replacing invasive plants with desirable bird attractors and a water feature.”

Hotel Developers Launch Florida Projects Aimed at Rocket Tourists

During the Cold War, the space race spurred economic development in Central Florida’s Brevard County, earning the region the nickname of Space Coast. Today, private rocket launches are boosting the trajectory of the local hotel market — so much so that hotelier Driftwood Capital is investing more than $400 million to build a high-end resort that will push the envelope on room rates.

“Every single time there’s a rocket launch, all the hotels in the area fill up,” said Carlos Rodriguez Sr., the hotel company’s chairman and CEO. “All of these VIPs that are coming to see these launches have no good hotel to stay at.”

Driftwood Capital aims to break ground in mid-2024 on the Westin Resort & Spa Cocoa Beach, an oceanfront property a few miles south of Port Canaveral and the Cape Canaveral Space Force Station. Plans call for a 502-room resort and a conference center on the 15.7-acre oceanfront property.

“It will be one of the top five resorts in the Southeastern U.S.,” Rodriguez said. 

He expects the new Westin Resort to generate average nightly room rates of $450 — a figure he freely admits is well above the Space Coast’s rate range now. In February, the average nightly room rate in the metro area was $171, according to hotel data firm STR.

“The market has changed a lot,” Rodriguez said. “First of all, you have the space race, and all the trillions of dollars that are going into that.”

In earlier iterations of the space program, NASA launched Apollo rockets and space shuttles from Cape Canaveral. Now, much of the action is coming from Elon Musk’s SpaceX, but United Launch Alliance has ramped up activity, and Jeff Bezos’s Blue Origin and others are expected to become active at the Cape, too.

Rob Long, CEO of Space Florida, the state’s aerospace economic development agency, said there were 72 launches from the Cape in 2023, and more than 100 rockets will take off this year.

“The pace has exploded over the past five years,” Long said. “You’re seeing more and more use cases.”

Rodriguez, for his part, expects the number of launches to grow to 300 a year.

Driftwood Capital, headquartered in Coral Gables, Fla., has plenty of insight into the Space Coast hotel market. The company owns a 290-room Crowne Plaza and a 295-room Hilton in Cocoa Beach, and it operated a hotel on the site of the future Westin, but razed it to make way for the development.

Because of the current lack of high-end hotels, visitors with a taste for luxury stay in Orlando, then make the hourlong drive to the Atlantic coast, said Rodriguez.

Compared to glitzier areas of Florida, Cocoa Beach has always been affordable. In “The Right Stuff,” the classic 1979 account of the birth of the space program, author Tom Wolfe sneered at Cocoa Beach’s sand as “hard as a brick” and dismissed the town itself as decidedly downscale.

“Cocoa Beach was the resort town for all the Low Rent folk who couldn’t afford the beach towns farther south,” Wolfe wrote. “Cocoa Beach was so Low Rent that nothing on this Earth could ever change it.”

Rodriguez aims to prove Wolfe wrong. Cocoa Beach is evolving, and the latest shift will add luxury lodging to the resort town’s middle-market inventory. “It will be a transformational project,” Rodriguez said of the Westin Resort. “There’s absolutely nothing close to it.”

As part of its development plan, Driftwood won a $30 million grant from Brevard County to include a conference center at the resort, located at 1300 North Atlantic Avenue.

Rodriguez said he makes development decisions based on basic economic factors. He looks for demand drivers such as a busy schedule of rocket launches.

Of course, space booms can go bust, too. The end of the space shuttle program in 2011 delivered a blow to the Space Coast, which lost thousands of jobs related to that activity. But the burgeoning schedule of private space launches has picked up the slack.

Rodriguez also scouts for constrained supply. On that front, he was both frustrated and heartened by the scarcity of oceanfront land along the Space Coast.

“It’s very difficult to approve anything of height or density. There’s an anti-development flavor there. You basically need to win them over,” Rodriguez said. “It took me seven years and a referendum to get approval.”

In another sign of its bullishness on the Space Coast, Driftwood also is developing a $68 million Element by Westin in Melbourne, Fla., about 20 miles south of Cocoa Beach. That hotel is expected to open in June. Once the Westin Resort opens, Rodriguez hopes, the luxury entrant will allow other hoteliers in the market to boost their room rates.

The Space Coast is far from Driftwood’s only focus. The company manages 87 hotels with 16,000 rooms nationwide.

The company is developing new hotels across the country, including the Element by Westin Mission Valley in San Diego and Riverside Wharf in Downtown Miami. The Miami project is a $267 million mixed-use development on the Miami River that will feature a Dream Hotel.

Driftwood’s diversified rental streams include not just developing and owning hotels but also lending to other hoteliers. As capital grew scarce, the company made loans to hotel owners, either to refinance expiring mortgages or to allow franchisees to meet the renovation requirements imposed by national brands.

“When financial institutions tightened up on their lending, that created the opportunity for lenders like us to bridge the gap,” Rodriguez said.

Lenders view hotels as high-risk properties, and they typically offer loan-to-value ratios of just 50 percent. Driftwood makes loans for an additional 5 percent to 10 percent of a property’s value. “We take the riskier portion of the loan, and the bank is happy that we’re doing it,” Rodriguez said. “We’re sort of an insurance policy for them.”

Driftwood charges a premium for its financing, which can cost about 10 points over the Secured Overnight Financing Rate, a key borrowing metric tied to U.S. treasuries. Rodriguez said the stricter underwriting requirements have brought stability to the hospitality sector.

“Financial institutions have always viewed hotels as a different animal,” he said. “That has been a blessing. As a result of the tougher underwriting that hotels have been under for many, many years, you don’t see as many hotels in trouble.”
